PM stresses need for economic self-reliance in address to nation

PM Shehbaz
On the eve of August 14, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the nation that there is no concept of a nation's independence without economic self-reliance.

In a televised address to the nation on Saturday, the prime minister reiterated his call for the formation of a "charter of economy", saying that time has come for Pakistan to head in the right direction.

"We should keep national interest above personal interest [...] as real political leadership does not look towards the next elections, but at the future of the next generation," he said.

In the beginning of his address, the prime minister congratulated the nation on completing 75 years as an indpendent nation.

He said that the people celebrate Independence Day, Pakistan Day, Quaid-e-Azam Day, and Iqbal Day but the "truth" is, in the last 75 years, the nation has only only celebrated these days but not acknowledged the founding father's purpose.

The premier noted that the country failed to provide the young generation what they deserved.

"Why this nation is still lost even when God has blessed it?" he questioned.

FBI recovered ‘top secret’ documents from Trump’s Florida residence

Donald Trump
The FBI recovered documents that were labeled “top secret” from former US President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

According to international media a property receipt unsealed by the court on Friday shows FBI agents took 11 sets of classified records from the estate during a search. The property receipt is a document prepared by federal agents to specify what was taken during a search.

The seized records include some that were marked as classified and some top secret. The court records did not provide specific details about the documents or what information they might contain.

On Friday, Trump claimed that the documents seized by agents at his Florida club were “all declassified”, and argued that he would have turned over the documents to the Department of Justice if asked.

“Number one, it was all declassified. Number two, they didn’t need to ‘seize’ anything. They could have had it anytime they wanted without playing politics and breaking into Mar-a-Lago,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Rupee continues upward trend in interbank trade

Rupee
The rupee continued to gain for the ninth consecutive session on Friday, jumping by Rs3.28 in the interbank market.

According to the Forex Association of Pakistan (FAP), the PKR was being traded at Rs215.6 by 12:30pm, having appreciated 1.49 per cent from yesterday’s close.

Mettis Global Director Saad bin Naseer said he believed the rupee’s rise was because exporters, who were earlier holding their dollar earnings abroad, have now started to bring their proceeds into the country amid the local currency’s appreciation.

On the other hand, demand for the dollar has been subdued due to the government’s intervention to keep imports in check, he said.

However, Naseer cautioned that any negative news on the political front could lead to the rupee’s fall again. “Political stability is a must for the positive trend to continue, otherwise the rupee will erase all its gains.”

General Secretary of Exchange Companies Association of Pakistan (Ecap), Zafar Paracha, shared a similar view. He said the exporters had previously stopped bringing their proceeds into Pakistan but were offloading their dollars now while the importers who were earlier worried and buying the greenback for future forwards had stopped doing so.

Consequently, there were sellers in the market but no buyers, he said.

He also credited the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) for the rupee’s appreciation, saying that it had controlled to a large extent the speculation being done by banks and the large gaps they were maintaining between the dollar’s buying and selling rates.

In addition, the country’s import bill had dipped in July and would be further reduced in August as the country would not import oil, he said. The Ecap secretary general noted that the prices of oil, coal, wheat and pulses had reduced internationally which would also lead to a lower import bill.

“Overall, things are moving positively and it appears the pressure on the rupee will ease.”

Zafar said it was “still not a satisfactory level” and the rupee needed to be traded at Rs160 against the dollar in the long term. For this, he suggested, the government needed to link imports to exports, expenditures to income and offer rebates to overseas Pakistanis and exchange companies to discourage the hundi/hawala system.

The value of the national currency increased 9.3pc in the last eight sessions, according to Arif Habib Ltd.

Despite the recent trend, the rupee has lost as much as 19.36pc against the US currency since the start of 2022. Since July 1, which is the first day of the current fiscal year, the rupee has shed 6.41pc against its American counterpart.

Envoy of the European Union to Pakistan, Dr Riina Kionka calls on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister House.

He also highlighted the “unprecedented level of cooperation” that Pakistan had extended to the international community with regard to Afghanistan, especially since the takeover of Kabul by the Taliban in August last year.

Gold
Gold price was down Rs1,400 at Rs141,700 per tola and decreased by Rs1,200 to Rs121,485 per 10 grams. The rates of gold were Rs143,100 per tola and Rs122,685 per 10 grams.

Pakistan is a small market for gold at the global level. It meets the commodity’s demand through imports as it does not produce the commodity locally.

Accordingly, the gold price for local markets is determined by keeping in view its prices in world markets, rupee-dollar exchange rate, and demand and supply in domestic markets.

The latest price for local markets was determined to keep in view the prices at which trades took place among buyers and sellers.

It should be noted that the gold price is standing below cost. Gold is cheaper by Rs4,000 per tola compared to its price in Dubai.

Lawmakers concerned about militants’ return to KP

National Assembly
Expressing his apprehensions at the success of talks with the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Wednesday admitted on the floor of the National Assembly that anti-Taliban feelings were growing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as people were holding protest demonstrations in various parts of the province against the Taliban presence in their area.

Responding to independent MNA from erstwhile Federally-Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) Mohsin Dawar who drew the attention of the house towards the rise in terrorism in KP after arrival of Taliban from Afghanistan, the defence minister admitted that the law and order situation was worsening in the province. He, however, termed it a “national issue”, instead of a provincial matter.

The minister regretted that the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leadership, including former prime minister Imran Khan, had in the past welcomed the Taliban people in the province, but now the PTI’s provincial government was itself protesting against the presence of the Taliban in the province.

He said there were reports of the protests from Dir, Swat and other places in the province against the Taliban.

He also expressed his apprehensions about the success of the talks with the TTP. “This assembly was given two briefings [on the issue of talks with the TTP].

May Allah keep the affairs [talks] on track as per the briefings,” said the minister, adding: “the danger is gradually increasing.”

Mr Asif expressed the hope that the Taliban would not force imposition of their “own system and implement their “intentions” which they showed from time to time”.

The minister said that a committee comprising political elders had been constituted to visit the Pakistan-Afghanistan entry point at Ghulam Khan area in North Waziristan to persuade the protesters to open the trade route which they had closed in protest for the past two weeks over the killing of some JUI-F members and tribal people.

He hoped that the committee members would succeed in pacifying the protesters to resume the stalled trade activities with Afghanistan. He said the closure of roads had badly affected trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan, besides affecting economy of the area.

Speaking on a point of order, Mr Dawar earlier said the people of North Waziristan had been protesting for the past 26 days and they were only demanding “peace and protection”.

The lawmaker claimed terrorism had spread across KP and warned it would soon grip the whole country. Recently, he said, a PTI MPA was attacked and many of his companions were martyred. Similarly, he said, a police official and an army major were abducted from Swat.

Mr Dawar said the Taliban were telling the local people that their leadership had directed them to return to the area in the wake of the ongoing talks between Pakistani authorities and the TTP.

The MNA from Waziristan ridiculed the PTI leaders for protesting against Taliban, recalling that the previous PTI government had welcomed and celebrated the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan.

He criticised the “non-seriousness” of the authorities to tackle the issue, declaring that the people of KP would not accept “project-Taliban policy” and would resist it at all cost.

Pakistan averted Sri Lanka-like situation, says Miftah

Miftah Ismail
Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Miftah Ismail claimed that Pakistan has successfully averted Sri Lanka-like situation and the economy of the country “was now heading in the right direction”.

Miftah, in an interview with CNBC, said: “There were serious worries about Pakistan heading Sri Lanka’s way and Pakistan getting into a default-like situation but thankfully, we made some significant changes…… I think we averted that situation.”

The finance minister further added that country was now in International Monetary Fund's (IMF) programme and a staff-level agreement has already been signed and approval from the IMF board for the release of funds under the Extended Fund Facility is expected to be given by end of August.

“The country was headed in the right direction,” he said, adding that due to the reduction in demand, the interest rates have been increased. “The imports have also gone down whereas the Pakistani rupee has appreciated by around 7% against the dollar since last week,” he mentioned.

Replying to a question, he said that the tough decision and measures taken by the government had affected the people of the country, however, the government had no other option but to save the economy from collapsing.

The finance minister said the international fuel prices increased while the commodity and edible oil prices also surged, creating a challenging environment at the international level.

He went on to say the Pakistani economy was not in a position to absorb the international price-hike shocks and which is why the government had to pass on the price increase to the people to avert Sri Lanka-like situation in the country.

“Pakistan was passing through difficult times,” he said, expressing the hope that the prices in the international market would come down within a couple of months and would help reduce domestic inflation.

IHC rejects PTI’s request to immediately suspend by-elections on nine seats

PTI
The Islamabad High Court rejected an application filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) seeking immediate suspension of by-elections’ scheduled announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan on nine vacant National Assembly seats.

Last week, the PTI filed a miscellaneous application with the IHC asking the court to suspend the election schedule on nine NA seats.

The ECP had announced the schedule for by-elections on nine NA seats that fell vacant after Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf accepted the resignations of nine PTI MPAs.

Interim IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq heard the case on Wednesday. The court asked if there’s any legal ground for suspending the election schedule. The commission was told that the seats have fallen vacant so they have issued a schedule, it said.

The lawyer representing the PTI said that we have been asking for by-elections since day 1. But we want by-elections to be held on all 123 seats that the party MNAs have resigned from, he said.

The court, however, rejected the PTI’s request to immediately suspend the schedule for by-elections and issued notice to the ECP.

It adjourned the hearing till August 16 and asked the commission to submit a reply by then.

Death toll rises to 29, including six children, as Israel pounds Gaza with air strikes

Death toll rises to 29, including six children, as Israel pounds Gaza with air strikes
The death toll from escalating violence in Gaza rose to 29 on Sunday, as well as the killing of a senior commander of a Palestinian armed group, as Israel extended its bombardment of the territory for a second consecutive day.

In a statement today, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement (PIJ) confirmed the killing of one of its senior armed commanders in an Israeli air strike on the Gaza Strip.

“Al-Quds Brigades mourns the leader Khaled Mansour, member of the security council and the commander of the southern region (of Gaza Strip) who was martyred as a result of an Israeli air strike yesterday (Saturday),” the group said in the statement.

Al-Quds Brigades is the armed wing of the group.

Meanwhile, the updated count from health authorities in the Hamas-run territory said six children were among those martyred since the start of the “Israeli aggression” on Friday, in addition to 204 people injured.

But Israel said it had “irrefutable” evidence that a stray rocket from militants had been responsible for the death of multiple children in Jabalia, northern Gaza, on Saturday.

It was not immediately clear how many children were martyred in the incident in Jabalia.

Israel's military has warned its aerial and artillery campaign against the Palestinian armed group could last a week, but Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said Cairo is talking “around the clock” with both sides to ease the violence.

Israel has said it was necessary to launch a “pre-emptive” operation against the group as it was planning an imminent attack following days of tensions along the border with Gaza.

Civilians meanwhile took refuge in air raid shelters on the Israeli side, with AFP journalists hearing sirens warning of incoming fire in the Tel Aviv area on Saturday evening.

In Rafah, on Gaza's border with Egypt, women and children were trapped under rubble following an Israeli strike, the strip's civil defence unit said.

Daily life in the strip has come to a standstill, while the electricity distributor said the sole power station shut down due to a lack of fuel after Israel closed its border crossings.

Gaza's health ministry said the next few hours will be “crucial and difficult”, warning it risked suspending vital services within 72 hours as a result of the lack of electricity.

The UN humanitarian chief for the occupied Palestinian territories, Lynn Hastings, urged the warring sides to allow “fuel, food, and medical supplies” to be delivered to Gaza amid the worsening crisis.

On Friday, the health ministry reported “a five-year-old girl” was among those killed by Israeli fire.

The girl, Alaa Kaddum, had a pink bow in her hair and a wound on her forehead, as her body was carried by her father at her funeral.

The Gaza strikes follow the arrest in the occupied West Bank of two senior members of Palestinian armed group, including Bassem al-Saadi, whom Israel accuses of orchestrating recent attacks.

Israel has conducted a wave of often deadly raids in the West Bank since mid-March in response to alleged lethal attacks on Israelis.

Imran trying to divert attention from his theft with PTI 'power show: Interior Minister

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and other PMLN leaders
Lashing out at the PTI, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Sunday claimed that Imran Khan will suffer defeat during the upcoming by-elections in all the nine National Assembly constituencies that fell vacant after the NA speaker accepted the resignations of the concerned PTI MNAs.

Terming PTI’s back-to-back public gatherings across the country “political stunts”, Rana Sanaullah said that Imran Khan was trying to divert attention from his theft.

It is pertinent to mention here that the PTI is preparing to stage a ‘grand power show’ at Islamabad’s Parade Ground to decide its strategy with party supporters on the eve of Independence Day.

In a statement, the interior minister said that the PTI is allowed to stage a public gathering at the Parade Ground, adding that it will be a political stunt.

“Whoever will not cooperate with the FIA relating to an inquiry into the prohibited funding case [against PTI] will be arrested,” warned the interior minister.

Without giving an exact time frame, Sanaullah maintained that PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif will return to his homeland ahead of the next general elections.

Chinese and Taiwanese warships eye each other as drills due to end

Chinese and Taiwanese warships eye each other as drills due to end
Chinese and Taiwanese warships played high-seas “cat and mouse” on Sunday ahead of the scheduled end of four days of unprecedented Chinese military exercises launched in reaction to a visit to Taiwan by the US house speaker.

Nancy Pelosi’s visit last week to the self-ruled island infuriated China, which responded with test launches of ballistic missiles over the island’s capital for the first time and the cutting of communication links with the United States.

Some 10 warships each from China and Taiwan sailed at close quarters in the Taiwan Strait, with some Chinese vessels crossing the median line, an unofficial buffer separating the two sides, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

The island’s defence ministry said in a release multiple Chinese military ships, aircraft, and drones were simulating attacks on the island and its navy. It said it had sent aircraft and ships to react “appropriately”.

As Chinese forces “pressed” the line, as they did on Saturday, the Taiwan side stayed close to monitor and, where possible, deny the Chinese the ability to cross, the person said.

“The two sides are showing restraint, the person said, describing the manoeuvres as high seas “cat and mouse”.

“One side tries to cross, and the other stands in the way and forces them to a more disadvantaged position and eventually return to the other side.”

Taiwan said its shore-based anti-ship missiles and its Patriot surface -to-air-missiles were on stand-by.

The Chinese exercises, centred on six locations around the island that China claims as its own, began on Thursday and are scheduled to last until midday on Sunday, the official Xinhua News Agency reported last week.

China’s military said on Saturday the sea and air joint exercises, north, southwest and east of Taiwan, had a focus on land-strike and sea-assault capabilities.

The United States called the exercises an escalation.

“These activities are a significant escalation in China’s efforts to change the status quo. They are provocative, irresponsible and raise the risk of miscalculation,” a White House spokesperson said.

“They are also at odds with our long-standing goal of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, which is what the world expects.”

‘Damaging peace’

China says its relations with Taiwan are an internal matter and it reserves the right to bring the island under its control, by force if necessary. Taiwan rejects China’s claims saying only Taiwan’s people can decide their future.

China has also warned the United States not to “act rashly” and create a greater crisis.

Referring to the response to Pelosi’s visit, the Communist Party’s People’s Daily newspaper said China had adopted “effective measures that fully demonstrates that China is fully determined and capable of safeguarding national unity and safeguarding … sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

Taiwan’s Premier Su Tseng-chang told reporters that China had “arrogantly” used military action to disrupt peace and he called on Beijing not to not flex its military muscle.

Taiwan’s defence ministry said on Saturday its forces scrambled jets to warn away 20 Chinese aircraft, including 14 that crossed the median line. It also detected 14 Chinese ships conducting activity around the Taiwan Strait.

The ministry released a photograph showing Taiwanese sailors closely watching a nearby Chinese vessel.

Taiwan’s forces on Friday fired flares to warn away drones flying over its Kinmen islands and unidentified aircraft flying over its Matsu islands. Both island groups are close to China’s coast.

‘World faces a choice’

As part of its response to Pelosi’s visit, China has halted communication through various channels with the United States including between military theatre commands and on climate change.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused China of taking “irresponsible” steps and moving away from prioritising peaceful resolution towards the use of force.

Pelosi, a long-time China critic and a political ally of US President Joe Biden, arrived in Taiwan late on Tuesday on the highest-level visit to the island by an American official in decades, despite Chinese warnings. She said her visit showed unwavering US commitment to supporting Taiwan’s democracy.

“The world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy,” she said. She also stressed that her trip was “not about changing the status quo in Taiwan or the region”.

Taiwan has been self-ruled since 1949, when Mao Zedong’s communists took power in Beijing after defeating Chiang Kai-shek’s Kuomintang nationalists in a civil war, prompting their retreat to the island.

Speaking during a visit to the Philippines, Blinken said the United States had been hearing concern from allies about what he called China’s dangerous and destabilising actions but Washington sought to avoid escalating the situation.

He said China’s cessation of bilateral dialogue in eight key areas were moves that would punish the world.

China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, on Friday accused Blinken of spreading “misinformation”.

Coalition govt to take PTI foreign funding case to its logical conclusion: Hamza Shahbaz

Former Punjab chief minister Hamza Shahbaz
Former Punjab chief minister Hamza Shahbaz Saturday said all coalition government parties have unanimously decided to take PTI’s prohibited funding case to its "logical conclusion".

Speaking to journalists after meeting party supremo Nawaz Sharif, Hamza said: “The nation will hold declared Sadiq and Ameen [Imran Khan] accountable for calling others, thieves and robbers.”

“If Nawaz was disqualified for not taking salary from his son then Khan is immersed in prohibited funding from head to toe,” he added.

Regarding PTI’s demand for snap polls, Hamza stated that elections will be held as per schedule in 2023, adding that he is hopeful that his uncle will lead the election campaign of his party.

The PML-N leader, while commenting on Punjab CM’s election, said that they will not leave this matter like this and will seek justice from the court.

“When a full court will be formed in this matter then the case will be crystal clear,” he added.

Hamza had to quit the office of CM after the Supreme Court gave its verdict on the PTI petition against the deputy speaker's ruling. Pervez Elahi of the PML-Q replaced him as Punjab CM due to the verdict.

Hamza arrived in London on a private visit on Friday and is expected to stay in the British capital for a few days. During his stay in London, the former chief minister met party supremo, Nawaz Sharif, who is there since 2019 and other family members.
