The fire brigade personnel doused off a blaze erupted at the Ali Towers situated on Lahore's MM Alam road.

At least two people jumped off from the building in a bid to escape the fire. Both the injured were shifted to the hospital for immediate treatment, one of whom succumbed to his injuries.

Serena Williams loses to Naomi Osaka in US Open after 'umpire thief' fiasco

Serena Williams loses to Naomi Osaka in US Open after 'umpire thief' fiasco
Serena Williams' bid for a 24th Grand Slam title imploded in a furious tirade against umpire Carlos Ramos, calling him a thief after he docked her a point for two code violations.

Osaka, 20, triumphed 6-2, 6-4 in the match marred by Williams's second set outburst, the American enraged by umpire Carlos Ramos's warning for receiving coaching from her box.

Her outburst then earned her a game penalty, prompting a further outburst to tournament officials and putting Osaka within one game of victory.

The altercation started when Williams smashed her racket to smithereens and Ramos gave her a code violation warning. Coupled with the prior coaching warning, this indicates she's given a point penalty.

Pausing the game, she went up to the umpire, telling him: "You owe me an apology."

"Every time I play here, I have problems. I did not have coaching, I don't cheat. You need to make an announcement. I have a daughter and I stand for what's right. You owe me an apology."

Ramos, however, remained poised but in a manner that showed his clear distaste towards Williams.

"For you to attack my character is wrong. You owe me an apology. You will never be on a court with me as long as you live. You are the liar. You owe me an apology. Say it. Say you're sorry.

"How dare you insinuate that I was cheating? You stole a point from me. You're a thief too.

"This is not right. It's because I'm a woman. This happens to me every time I play here. It's not right. It's not fair. I've worked so hard to be in this position."

Subsequently, Osaka got off a perfect start at 15-0 with only three points away from the title. Despite Williams levelling the game, her opponent managed to lead again with a service winner and following another one, secured her victory.

While Osaka was declared the 2018 US Open champion and Williams made a cursory embrace, the latter refused to shake Ramos' hand, telling him, again, he owed her "an apology".

US to cut off aid to Palestinian hospitals in al-Quds

US to cut off aid to Palestinian hospitals in al-Quds
The United States has decided to cut off financial aid to Jerusalem al-Quds hospitals that provide cancer treatments and other critical care for Palestinians, amid warnings of the “collapse” of medical centers.

Alessia Dinkel, the US State Department spokeswoman, told the National Public Radio (NPR) on Friday  that the administration of President Donald Trump is cutting $25 million it had planned to give to the East Jerusalem al-Quds Hospital Network, a group of six hospitals, some church-run, which provide care primarily to Palestinians.

According to the World Health Organization, the medical centers provide healthcare for Palestinians to whom such medical assistance is unavailable in the occupied West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip.

Adnan Husseini, Palestinian Authority minister for Jerusalem al-Quds affairs, said the latest cuts were “not surprising at all”, stressing that Palestinians would not surrender to pressure from Washington.

“Let America know that all these acts will not change our position toward our cause one bit. On the contrary, it consolidates our positions toward every issue, including Jerusalem [al-Quds]," Husseini told NPR.

Dave Harden, a former senior US official overseeing aid to the Palestinians under the Obama administration, said the cuts were “particularly vindictive”, warning that they could cause the “collapse” of two of the medical centers in the East Jerusalem al-Quds network.

Last Friday, the US announced it would end all funding to the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees, known as UNRWA, and the previous week cut over $200 million in aid for the West Bank and Gaza.

The US-Palestine ties deteriorated last December, when Trump declared Jerusalem al-Quds as the “capital” of Israel and announced plans to transfer the embassy from Tel Aviv to the occupied city.

The contentious move led Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to formally declare that the Palestinians would no longer accept the US as a mediator to resolve the conflict because Washington was “completely biased” towards Tel Aviv.

Experts in the US have warned over the Trump administration’s single-minded focus on satisfying the short-term goals of Israel and its supporters in the US, even at the cost of American interests.

Egypt sentences 75 people to death over 2013 Cairo sit-in

Egypt sentences 75 people to death over 2013 Cairo sit-in
An Egyptian court has sentenced to death 75 people for their participation in sit-in protests following the 2013 ouster of democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi.

Among those sentenced to death by hanging Saturday at the Cairo Criminal Court were prominent Muslim Brotherhood members Essam al-Erian and Mohamed Beltagi and prominent Islamic preacher Safwat Higazi.

Of the 75 people, 44 are in jail and 31 are on the run.

Another 56 defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, including Mohamed Badie, the spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Prominent photojournalist Mahmoud Abu Zeid, also known as Shawkan, was handed a five-year sentence. He was detained in August 2013 while covering the killings in Cairo.

On August 14, 2013, police dispersed a mass sit-in protest in Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya Square. The security forces killed over 800 people in a matter of hours, in what Human Rights Watch (HRW) concluded "likely amounted to crimes against humanity".

Rights groups have criticized the mass trial of more than 700 people in what has become known as the Rabaa case.

Government forces moved in with armored vehicles, bulldozers, and hundreds of security forces moving in the early hours.

According to HRW, nearly 85,000 protesters joined the sit-in, which extended for over 45 days and grew larger and more organized with time.

International rights groups have censured Egyptian authorities for failing to prosecute those members of the security forces who were involved in an August 2013 massacre of hundreds of protesters.

The protest was staged by supporters of Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first elected president and Muslim Brotherhood leader, who was overthrown by the military a few weeks earlier.

Morsi was sentenced to death on charges of corruption, escaping from prison, and inciting violence before the Court of Cassation overturned that ruling in November last year and ordered a retrial.

Thousands were arrested on the day of the massacre and in the months following.

Since President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi took power in 2014, authorities have justified a crackdown on dissent and freedoms as being directed at saboteurs trying to undermine the state. Death sentences have been handed down to hundreds of his political opponents on charges such as belonging to an illegal organization or planning to carry out an attack.

Israel imposes travel ban on Palestinian resistance icon Tamimi, family

Israel imposes travel ban on Palestinian resistance icon Tamimi, family
Israeli authorities have banned Palestinian resistance icon Ahed al-Tamimi and her family from traveling abroad, nearly two months after she was released from Israeli prison after serving an eight-month sentence for slapping an Israeli soldier.

Her father Basim al-Tamimi told Turkey's official Anadolu news agency on Friday that the family had planned to travel to Europe via Jordan in order to participate in some events pertaining to the  the Palestinian protest movement, and the Palestinian prisoners' sufferings in Israeli detention centers.

They were, however, informed by Palestinian officials that Israel had banned them from traveling abroad without providing a reason.

He added that they had planned to leave on Friday morning.

She was also planning a visit to Iran.

In an exclusive interview with Press TV, Ahed's father said Israel barred her daughter's trip for fear that she would foil the Israeli regime's "schemes for the disintegration of the region" by forging close relations with the enemies of Israel.

Israel prevented Ahed from travelling abroad, because she "has become a global ambassador for humanity," and "Israel is afraid of the sympathy and unity among its opponents," Ahed's father told Press TV.

On July 29, Tamimi, a resident of Nabi Saleh village that is located 20 kilometers northwest of Ramallah, and her mother, Nariman, were released from an Israeli prison after serving an eight-month sentence on assault and incitement charges and arrived home to a hero’s welcome.

The 17-year-old girl was detained by Israeli forces last December after a video of the curly-haired teen kicking and slapping two armed Israeli soldiers in protective gear went viral on Facebook. Israeli military forces had raided her home to arrest her brother.

In March, an Israeli court handed down an eight-month prison sentence to the Palestinian teenage protester for “attacking” Israeli forces.

Israeli forces have on occasions arrested members of Tamimi’s family, including brothers and parents, for their opposition to Israel’s invasion of Palestinian lands.

Israeli forces shot dead her uncle Rushdie al-Tamimi in Nabi Saleh village in 2012.

Her aunt Bassima al-Tamimi was beaten to death by an Israeli policeman in 1993 while attending her son's trial session at the time.

Trump’s former campaign aide sentenced to 14 days in prison

Trump’s former campaign aide sentenced to 14 days in prison
US President Donald Trump’s former aide, George Papadopoulos, has been sentenced to 14 days in prison.

Papadopoulos, a former aide to then-Republican candidate Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, was also sentenced on Friday to one year of supervised release and 200 hours of community service. He has to pay a fine of $9,500.

This came after he had pleaded guilty last year to lying to federal agents who were investigating whether campaign members coordinated with Russia before the election.

According to prosecutors for Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Papadopoulos did not tell the truth when being interrogated by agents about his contacts with the Russians during the campaign.

He did so in order “to minimize both his own role as a witness and the extent of the campaign’s knowledge of his contacts,” read the government’s sentencing memorandum.

London-based professor Joseph Mifsud, was among those contacts, who told him the Russians allegedly had “dirt” on Trump’s Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the form of “thousands of emails.”

“He didn’t come close to the standard of ‘substantial assistance,’” prosecutor Andrew Goldstein told the judge at the sentencing hearing Friday. “It was at best, begrudging efforts to cooperate.”

At the hearing, Papadopoulos told the judge that he hoped to “have a second chance to redeem myself,” adding, “I made a dreadful mistake but I am a good man.”

Trump and the key members of his team have been under investigation for allegedly "colluding" with Moscow during the 2016 campaign.

Russia has time and again denied the allegations on interfering in other countries’ democratic process, dismissing them as part of a “Russophobia” campaign run by the West.

“Everything about the so-called Russian dossier in the US is a manifestation of continuing domestic political struggle,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said last year.

Boxer Amir Khan beats Samuel Vargas in unanimous points decision

Boxer Amir Khan beats Samuel Vargas in unanimous points decision
British-Pakistan boxer emerged the victor against Samuel Vargas of Colombia, succeeding in his quest to win the welterweight world title.

Khan managed to overcome his opponent in all 12 rounds of the game, with the decision of his win being made based on points.

He returned to the ring after a blistering performance against Phil Lo Greco earlier this year, in April, that only lasted 39 seconds. It was his first fight in nearly two years since an injury.

Prior to the game, the 31-year-old said he was hoping a convincing display will get him a world title fight before the end of the year. "I’ve trained in LA for 10 weeks," he said, adding: "It was a tough schedule and did a lot of running, swimming, and boxing. Inshallah [God be willing], I will be ready.

"The fight against Vargas will be tough but I’ve prayers and support from everyone. I know I’ve trained very hard for this fight so nothing can go wrong and I really believe that I will win in style."

Khan, who became Britain's youngest Olympic medallist in 2004 at the age of 17, said: "My next fight after this will be for the world title; the fight against Vargas is an interim fight before that so basically this fight is the one before the world title fight."

"In my whole boxing career, I’ve won the world title three times. Winning one more will be amazing for my career," he added.

HRCP Expresses Concern Over Atif Mian’s EAC Withdrawal

HRCP Expresses Concern Over Atif Mian’s EAC Withdrawal
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed serious concern over the government’s decision to withdraw its nomination of Dr. Atif Mian for the Economic Advisory Council (EAC).

In a statement issued today, HRCP has said: “There is overwhelming evidence to show that Dr. Mian was eminently qualified to serve on the EAC and that his contribution to economic policymaking in Pakistan would have been immensely valuable. ”

The government’s decision to withdraw this nomination on the grounds that it might prove divisive – merely because he happens to belong to the Ahmadiyya community contravenes Article 27(1) of the Constitution of Pakistan, which clearly states that ‘no citizen otherwise qualified for appointment in the service of Pakistan shall be discriminated against in respect of any such appointment on the ground only of race, religion, caste, sex, residence or place of birth.’

‘HRCP welcomes the government’s desire, as expressed earlier, to promote inclusivity by carrying with it all social groups. This sentiment, however, cannot be applied arbitrarily or selectively and certainly not at the expense of beleaguered religious communities that are entitled to the state’s protection and to civil society’s support.”

It said defending human rights is necessarily a question of moral courage and HRCP strongly urges the government to avoid any sort of precedent that allows a person’s faith to trump all other criteria for public service.

US accused of blocking UN climate talks amid protests

US accused of blocking UN climate talks amid protests
The United States, despite withdrawing from a landmark accord aimed at curbing climate change, is stonewalling vital UN talks over how to fund poorer nations as they battle against global warming, sources told AFP Saturday.

US President Donald Trump caused global outrage by withdrawing from the Paris Accord last year but his country is still committed to the deal´s roadmap, giving Washington leverage over the Bangkok conference.

The issue of how funds are made available to developing nations has emerged as a key sticking point at the talks, which have made little headway since they opened on Tuesday.

The Paris deal — hailed as a game-changer when struck in 2015 — promised $100 billion annually from 2020 to poor nations already coping with floods, heatwaves and rising sea levels exacerbated by climate change.

But it left room for debate over how that money should be provided, as well as how donor nations would source and report their contributions.

Washington has tabled a proposal with support from Japan and Australia that seeks to remove rules on how countries account for their climate action funding, multiple sources close to the negotiations told AFP.

This would mean that developed economies — responsible for the lion´s share of planet-warming-feeding carbon emissions — could still count commercial loans and pre-existing state funding as part of their finance obligations.

Observers in Bangkok said the US and some other developed economies were also refusing point blank to discuss the contentious issue of how rich nations inform other states of their future funding plans.

A State Department spokeswoman declined to comment when contacted by AFP.

The US position is starkly at odds with that of the developing nations, which insist that transparent and predictable finance is needed to effectively plan investment in new technologies and carbon reduction.

A senior climate negotiator told AFP that the US delegation in Bangkok was "poisoning" discussions aimed at creating a clear roadmap to implementing what nations agreed in the Paris deal.

"The US is no longer playing the game but it´s still setting the rules," said the negotiator, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Talks in danger?

Activists rounded on the US, accusing Washington of endangering hard-earned gains on a global initiative to stop runaway global warming.

"The role of the US negotiators at the talks is actively hindering progress at this critical stage," Harjeet Singh, the global lead on climate change for pressure group ActionAid, told AFP.

He also accused other negotiating blocs, including the European Union, of "standing on the sidewalk" by failing to stand up for developing countries.

The Paris agreement, struck in December 2015, aims to limit global temperature rises to "well below" two degrees Celsius by 2100, shooting for no more than a 1.5C increase if at all possible.

Talks in Bangkok, which wrap up Sunday, aim to narrow down options to present to ministers and heads of state at the COP 24 climate summit in Poland in December.

Experts warn that the world is running out of time to prevent catastrophic temperature rises.

Protests were planned Saturday in cities across the world to call on leaders to accelerate efforts to tackle climate change.

In Bangkok, dozens of labourers and fisherman from the Gulf of Thailand whose livelihoods are threatened by rising sea levels joined demonstrators outside the UN.

While many observers assumed that the US would take a back seat in climate talks under the Trump administration, pressure groups said America was instead undermining the Paris process.

"In leading the charge to block practically every discussion on finance for the Paris guidelines, the US administration is threatening the future of the agreement and multilateralism itself," said Jesse Bragg, from the watchdog Corporate Accountability.

Pakistan Army sees Russia as strategic partners: RUSI

Pakistan Army sees Russia as strategic partners: RUSI
A leading British security think has assessed that for the first time in 200 years, Pakistan Army has abandoned the British Raj policy of confronting Russia for control over Central Asia – and now Pakistan’s Army sees the Russians as their strategic partners.

In a detailed analysis published by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), it has been argued that Pakistan’s Army, emboldened by Operations Zarb-e-Azb and Raddul Fasaad, has taken concrete steps of reforms and relationship which demonstrate that Pakistan doesn’t see Russia as a threat anymore and closer defence relationship between the former hostile powers is visible.

Kamal Alam, RUSI’s Fellow on defence and author of the report, wrote that Pakistan Army has pushed militants out of FATA and cleared the area of those groups fighting the Pakistani state, have announced an end to the British-era policy of the Frontier Crimes Regulation which residents of the FATA are denied basic legal rights.

“This would mean the fabled ‘buffer zone’ of Curzon and British India would be no more, once the incoming Parliament passes it in law in the coming year. This means that for the first time there is no need to have a tribal area. FATA will be abolished, and the areas on the Afghan border will be brought in line with the laws of the Pakistani state. In effect, the Russian threat is over. Pakistan’s Army and Russia are sealing an ever-closer defence relationship which will have a strategic impact on the world stage for years to come. Pakistan’s Army has also won over Moscow and Tehran to their side of the Afghan issue after decades of mistrust.

The RUSI report noted that the current Pakistani military leadership under Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa is set to reverse the Great Game and thereby end almost 200 years of “looking over their shoulder” and fearing the Russian threat.

It said: “Pakistan’s Army is frantically mending its historically weak ties with the Russian army and making progress through defence diplomacy at a dizzying pace by making a pivot to Russia instead of its traditionally close military ties with the US. There are multiple military deals, intelligence cooperation and joint training exercises that are redefining the region. As the US led by President Donald Trump further isolates Pakistan, the army under Bajwa is shoring up its Western flank with the help of its erstwhile enemy, the Russian military.”

The report analysed that Pakistan Army has felt that the policy of having a buffer zone with Afghanistan is no longer required as the Russians are no longer a threat to Afghanistan - and by default Pakistan.

It said that while Pakistan has always been a willing partner of America and firmly on side of the west, Donald Trump’s administration has forced Pakistan into policy re-think because “the Trump doctrine is now maturing into a permanent aggressive foreign policy against Pakistan in the shape of blocking military aid and putting pressure on the IMF not to grant the country more bailouts”.

It noted that the aggressive behaviour was shown when in the first week of August, the Americans cancelled military training for the Pakistani military. “It was no coincidence that as the Americans announced this, the Russians, for the first time in history, announced the start of military training for Pakistani military officers.”

“That Pakistan’s Army sees Russia as an ally in Afghanistan and Central Asia is a complete turnaround from 200 years of fearing and indeed fighting the ‘bear’ from across the River Oxus. Just 20 or even 10 years ago it was unthinkable that both Russia and Iran would support the Afghan Taliban. This was previously the preserve of just the Pakistani Army and its powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The Taliban had always been anti-Russian because of Russia’s support for the Taliban’s erstwhile enemies, the Northern Alliance, and they had also killed nine Iranian diplomats. Now, however, it is a widely accepted fact in most American military circles that both the Russians and the Iranians are following the Pakistani policy of supporting the Afghan Taliban,” said the report.

The report mentioned how relations between the two started becoming normal starting from 2002 but then picked up significantly over the issue of Afghanistan.

“Both countries now feel that the US-led war in Afghanistan is a threat to their security. Although Bajwa has carried out the policy of rapprochement to the Russians, there has been a slow drift away from the US by his predecessors, with the full support of the Corps Commanders, the executive arm of the military leadership which decides strategic decisions as a group. As the frenzy of American criticism on the Pakistani military rises, senior Russian defence officials have been publicly praising the Pakistani military’s efforts against terrorism on the Afghan borders.”

The report said that whilst all the talk during the Cold War was of a Russian threat to Pakistan and of it reaching the warm waters of the Arabian Sea, the Russians are now on board with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

It added: “Moscow’s approach to participating in the development of Gwadar Port in Pakistan, seen as Pakistan’s economic future, is considered a game-changer in Pakistan. The Chinese have welcomed this participation and see it as a balancer against India’s insecurities about the project.”

PM Imran came into power through rigging not votes: Shehbaz Sharif

Shehbaz Sharif
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday said Prime Minister Imran Khan did not come into power through votes.

"PM Imran was not elected but came into power through rigging," the PML-N president said while addressing a press conference alongside former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal and Marriyum Aurangzeb.

Shehbaz recalled that on the day of the election for the prime minister, PM Imran assured him that a parliamentary commission will be formed to probe into opposition's rigging allegations.

"However, three weeks have passed and a parliamentary commission has still not been formed," Shehbaz lamented.

"We will ensure that a commission is made at any cost," he added.

Further, the PML-N president urged, "PM Imran should fulfill his promises."

The PML-N president further regretted, "The PTI-led government increased gas, electricity and fertiliser prices just 20 days after assuming office."

Upholding that such a "massive increase in prices has never been announced before at once", Shehbaz said, "We will become the voice of the farmers and the common man."

Speaking about Prime Minister Imran Khan's presser a day earlier calling for the construction of dams, the PML-N president said, "We spent Rs122 billion for the construction of Basha Dam."

"You do not need to collect funds for Diamer-Basha Dam but should attract investors," he further said.

"There should be no delay in power production through Basha Dam," he asserted.

Shehbaz further said that PML-N's performance regarding power generation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa "is in front of the nation".

The PML-N president also criticised the new federal government's decision to end the ex-premier's laptop scheme.

"Laptops were not given to politicians but to students who achieved top scores," he said.

This is the age of information and technology and you are depriving the poor of the facility to access information through laptops, he added.

Regarding PM Imran's decision to auction PM House's luxury cars, Shehbaz said, "We held an auction of cars at Qaddafi Stadium."

Earlier, PM said that the country is facing severe water crisis as the Pakistan’s biggest issue is water scarcity.

In his video statement to the nation, PM Imran said that he had been taking presentations on natinal issues, adding that there is no doubt today that we are at a crisis situation.

He said that the country’s debt has soard to Rs30,000 billion but one of our biggest issues to date is the water issue. “When Pakistan was made, every pakistani had 5600 cubic metres of water but today that stands at only 1000 cubic metres,” he added.

Another economist resigns from EAC after Atif Mian asked to step down

University College London (UCL) Professor Imran Rasul
A second economist resigned from Prime Minister Imran Khan's Economic Advisory Council (EAC) in protest over Dr Atif Mian being asked to step down from the body.

University College London (UCL) Professor Imran Rasul on Saturday in a series of tweets announced that he had resigned from the EAC.

"With a heavy heart, I have resigned from the EAC this morning. The circumstances in which Atif was asked to step down are ones I profoundly disagree with. Basing decisions on religious affiliation goes against my principles, or the values I am trying to teach my children," Rasul tweeted.

"I wish the government and EAC luck in their future work, and remain willing to offer non-partisan, evidence based advice that can help improve economic policy making in the country," he added.

His resignation comes a day after two prominent Pakistani economists resigned from the EAC after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government asked one of them to step down.

Dr Atif R Mian, a professor at Princeton University and Woodrow Wilson School of Public Policy, had said he was resigning because the government was facing pressure regarding his appointment.

In the evening, the same day, Dr Asim ljaz Khwaja, a professor of International Finance and Development at the Harvard Kennedy School and a leading international economist of Pakistani origin, also stepped down from the EAC in protest after the news of Mian's resignation.

"Have resigned from EAC. Painful, deeply sad decision," Dr Asim said in a message on Twitter, adding that "ever ready to help" Pakistan.

On Friday, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had taken to Twitter, saying: "The government has decided to withdraw Dr Mian's EAC appointment."

"The government wants to move forward taking along ulema and all segments of the society, and if a different perception develops through a nomination, it is not right," Chaudhry had added.

PTI Senator Faisal Javed in a tweet had said Dr Mian has agreed to step down. "Atif Mian was asked to step down from the Advisory Council and he has agreed. A replacement would be announced later."

Mian's appointment to the EAC had led to severe criticism of the government.

PM Khan's sons Sulaiman Isa, Qasim reach Islamabad

PM Khan's two sons, Sulaiman Isa Khan and Qasim Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan's sons reached Islamabad on Saturday morning.

PM Khan's two sons, Sulaiman Isa Khan and Qasim Khan, have come from London — where they reside with their mother, the premier's former wife Jemima Goldsmith — and will stay in Pakistan for four days.

According to sources, Sulaiman and Qasim will stay at Imran's Bani Gala residence.

It is their first visit after their father took oath as the country's premier.

The two boys did not attend their father's oath-taking ceremony as the prime minister of Pakistan over his direction.

On August 18, before the cricketer-turned-politician assumed office, Goldsmith had said: "The boys are very sad not to be there but IK was adamant that they should not come."

In response to criticism that the two junior Khans were vacationing in Scotland instead of attending the oath-taking ceremony, the premier's ex-spouse clarified: "They wanted to be there. Their father asked them not to come."

"May the sons be proud of their father's work as the prime minister of a country that needs lots of dedication and work", she had added.

My child won't be Pakistani or Indian national: Shoaib Malik

All-rounder Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza
All-rounder Shoaib Malik has said his child will neither have Pakistani nor Indian nationality but of some other country.

He said his wife Sania was pregnant and expecting a baby soon. “I have taken permission from the team management to remain with my wife at the time of birth,” he told media at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Malik said it was going to be a memorable moment of his life to become a father. He appealed to his fans to pray for his wife and baby at the special moment.

He also urged the national team to bring their ODI performance at par with the Test cricket’s in the United Arab Emirates, when it open its campaign in the Asia Cup on Sept 15.

“It is on record that our team performs well in the test format in the UAE whereas its performance in the one day cricket is not of that level, and there is dire need to bring improvement in its 50-over game for achieving our set target in the Cup,” he said.

The stylish all-rounder once again made it clear that the World Cup in 2019 (ODI) and World Cup T20 will be his last cricket assignments, but gave an indication to quit the game earlier from these two mega events.

“It all depends on my fitness and performance and if in between a player better than me gets into the team, I will call it a day,” he said.

“Nowadays, one day cricket has become more or less T20 thrilling format of the game, as the first three batsmen with their solid innings or a specific bowler with two or three wickets breakthrough adds to the performance of their team and can turn the fate of the match,” he asserted.

The veteran all-rounder was of the view that Pakistan team should not take extra pressure while playing India in the Asia Cup match on September 19 and take it as a routine and normal game.

“Without any doubt, Pak-India matches have the status of nerve-wrecking encounters as they are being watched around the globe by millions of diehard lovers of the game.

“And in such circumstances if a player takes extra pressure regarding the match, it is obvious that he may not be able to perform up to a certain level,” he said.

He urged fellow players to take the match easy with a mindset of a performing in a routine game and exhibit their natural game.

“It is a hard fact that Pak-India matches take place after a long gap, which makes such ties very important and the match winning team’s top performer gains the status of a hero,” he said.

“If both the countries play cricket on frequently, these matches will not be considered of high importance,” he added.
Shoaib Malik said bilateral cricket series between Pakistan and India not only promotes cricket but also helps bring closer the peoples of the two countries.

He called for having cricket events on regular basis between Pakistan and India.

UN urges member states to support CTBT

UN urges member states to support CTBT
UN General Assembly (UNGA) President Miroslav Lajcak said that besides human suffering and planet contamination, nuclear tests also pose political threat as they do not build trust.

"The last century has seen massive advancement in nuclear science and technology. And this has led to many benefits. But, also, indescribable pain," Lajcak said in his opening remarks at a high-level meeting to commemorate the International Day against Nuclear Tests that falls on Aug. 29.

Since nuclear weapons testing began in 1945, nearly 2,000 have taken place. "Some of which, unfortunately, happened not that long ago," he said.

"These tests do not build trust. Instead, they escalate tensions. They create openings for political miscalculations, and they bring us closer to the brink," he warned.

The UNGA chief said the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which was adopted in 1996 and has since been open for signature, "offers us our best shot at making nuclear tests a thing of the past," urging member states' support for entering the treaty into force.

Turning to the developments on the Korean Peninsula, Lajcak commended the past year's progress towards denuclearization.

"This time last year, things looked bleak... Now, we can see the opportunity," he said, noting "positive steps have been taken by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea -- including the suspension of nuclear tests and launches of inter-continental ballistic missiles, as well as the closure of a nuclear test site."

At the same time, he urged more tangible action on the Korean Peninsula, stressing "verification is crucial for progress."

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke after Lajcak at the high-level meeting.

He recalled his visit in July to Japan's Nagasaki where he met with survivors of the atomic bomb attack.

"Through the testimony of the survivors, the Hibakusha, we are reminded of the need to ensure that nuclear weapons are never used again," he stressed.

The UN chief also noted the victims of the disastrous era of widespread nuclear testing, saying "the catastrophic impact of nuclear testing has had profound effects on the environment, human health, food security and economic development."

On Dec. 2, 2009, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution to declare Aug. 29 the International Day against Nuclear Tests.

The resolution was initiated with a view to commemorating the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan on Aug. 29, 1991.

The Day is meant to galvanize the UN, member states, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, youth networks and the media to inform, educate and advocate the necessity of banning nuclear weapon tests as a valuable step towards achieving a safer world.
