Federer wins third Hopman in dramatic fashion

Roger Federer
Roger Federer became the most successful player in Hopman Cup history when he led Switzerland to a 2-1 win in an enthralling final of the mixed teams tournament in Perth Saturday.

In what is tipped to be the final edition of the unique tournament, the best was saved for last as Federer became the first player to win three Hopman Cups, teaming with Belinda Bencic to make it successive titles in Perth.

For the second year in a row, the Swiss beat the German pairing of Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber by claiming a deciding mixed doubles rubber which was loaded with drama.

It was Switzerland’s fourth title overall, behind only the United States with six, and Federer first won the Hopman Cup back in 2001 when he teamed with Martina Hingis.

The 37-year-old gave the Swiss the early ascendancy with a straight sets win against Zverev, before Kerber squared the tie by beating a dogged Bencic to set up the mixed doubles decider.

Federer was a dominant figure in an extraordinary doubles match as the Swiss claimed the abbreviated format 4-0, 1-4, 4-3 (5/4) to clinch the title despite Germany having two match points.

Fittingly, it was Federer who served out the match in the third set tie-break, having been unable to do so earlier in the set.

The tournament came down to a single point at 4-4 in the third set tie-break, with both teams holding match point and after an extended rally Zverev dumped a backhand into the net to hand the Swiss victory.

- ‘What a thrill’ -

Federer also became the first player to win successive Hopman Cups and said the records were a nice bonus for winning the title.

"I am very happy for these records, although I didn’t come here for that," he said.

"Winning it back-to-back years, what a thrill it was, not just the match point but the whole week."

Zverev and Kerber were despondent after the loss and the former said it was a tough pill to swallow.

"We really wanted to win as a team," Zverev said.

"We came so close - we were one shot away."

In the men’s singles, Federer bounced back from a November loss to Zverev in London to beat the big-serving German 6-4, 6-2 and make it a clean sweep of his singles matches in Perth for the second year running, less than two weeks before he defends his Australian Open title.

It was a high-octane match, with plenty of big serves and clean winners, but Federer was able to answer everything the 21-year-old threw at him.

He broke Zverev in the 10th game of the first set and then tightened the noose on the German, with two more breaks in the second set.

Federer, who also beat Zverev in three sets in last year’s Hopman final, clinched the match with a typically crisp forehand volley.

He was pleased to maintain his unbeaten singles record during the week, during which he never dropped his serve.

World number two Kerber appeared set for an easy win in her singles match against Bencic, taking the first set and then claiming an early break in the second.

The German served for the match at 5-4, but the match took a dramatic twist as Bencic broke back, only for Kerber to immediately break again.

For a second time Kerber was unable to serve out the match, as Bencic forced it to a tie-break.

Kerber had two match points at 6-4 in the tie-break, but Bencic again hung on grimly and won the next two points.

It was not until Kerber’s third match point that a backhand winner secured the 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) win.

Critical to the result was Kerber’s ability to convert all four of her break points during the match, while Bencic was only successful on two of seven.

Money laundering case: JIT recommends freezing Zardari assets

Asif Ali Zardari and Faryal Talpur
The joint investigation team (JIT), probing money laundering of several billion rupees from fictitious bank accounts in Pakistan, on Saturday recommended "freezing" all assets of Asif Ali Zardari, Faryal Talpur, and Zardari and Omni groups.

The case, against Zardari and several other individuals, pertains to laundering of around Rs220 billion through fictitious bank accounts.

The JIT submitted its recommendations with the Supreme Court of Pakistan. It recommended freezing Bilawal House, Karachi and Lahore, and Zardari House, Islamabad.

The investigation also urged for freezing of New York and Dubai properties owned by Zardari, alongside all five plots of Bilawal House in Karachi.

It recommended freezing all urban and agricultural lands owned by Zardari, Talpur, and the Zardari Group.

The investigation team also moved the apex court to order freezing of all assets of Omni Group, including sugar mills, agricultural companies and energy companies.

In its report, the JIT accused Zardari and Omni groups of irregularities in loans and government funds. The report said that both the groups transferred money out of country through 'Hundi' and 'Hawala'.

It said the assets should remain frozen until a verdict in the multi-billion rupees money laundering case, expressing concerns that these assets might be transferred out of country.

The investigation team also requested the court to order Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) not to change names of Zardari and Omni groups' directors.

It further noted that Zardari established a 'benami' company through his front man Iqbal Memon, which was frozen in 1998.

However, the company was returned to Zardari in 2008 through Dr Dinshaw, the JIT stated in its report.

Zardari, Talpur reject JIT report

Asif Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur, both of whom are accused in the money laundering case, rejected the JIT report submitted in the Supreme Court.

In their reply submitted to the apex court, Zardari and Talpur contended that the report was based on speculation and targetted political victimisation.

The case

The FIA is investigating several people in relation to money laundering from fictitious bank accounts, including Zardari and Talpur. Zardari’s close aide Hussain Lawai was arrested in July 2018 in connection with the probe.

The former president’s other close aide and Omni Group chairman Anwar Majeed and his son Abdul Ghani Majeed were arrested by the FIA in August 2018.

Hundreds of ‘benami’ accounts at some private banks were opened in 2013, 2014 and 2015 from where transactions worth billions of rupees were made, according to the investigation.

The amount is said to be black money gathered from various kickbacks, commissions and bribes.

Zardari rejects JIT’s allegations levelled against him

Former President Asif Ali Zardari
Former President Asif Ali Zardari has turned down the allegations levelled against him in the report prepared by the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the fake bank accounts case and has asked the Supreme Court to reject the ‘dubious’ report.

In a 17-page document that he submitted in the Supreme Court on Saturday through his counsel, the co-chairman of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Zardari has said that he had not committed any wrongdoing, adding that the “allegations” in the JIT report were rooted in “victimisation against him”.

Expressing his reservations, the former president said that the JIT had neither provided copies of the evidence nor the copies of the witnesses’ statements to the respondents.

It is further stated in the response that the JIT doesn’t have the mandate to suggest that the matter should be referred to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), adding that alleging of wrongdoing without seeing evidentiary documents was a violation of article 10(A) of the constitution.

Zardari has asked to turn down the JIT report against him, as the report has already become controversial due to its leakage to the media, way before it was submitted to the court.

The JIT probing the fake accounts case requested the Supreme Court on Saturday to freeze all the assets held by Zardari Group, Omni Group, former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur.

These assets include residential houses such as Bilawal House in Karachi and Lahore as well as Zardari House in Islamabad.

The JIT submitted recommendations to freeze all the aforementioned properties as well as the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chair’s assets in New York and Dubai, all the urban and agricultural lands of Talpur and Zardari apart from Omni groups’ sugar mills, agricultural and energy companies and also luxury cars owned by them.

CAA restores licenses of 15 pilots

PIA had dismissed four captains from service over holding fake degrees
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has restored the licenses of 15 pilots a day after suspending them.

According to a notification of the Authority as reported by the state-run Radio Pakistan, the pilots have been allowed to fly aircrafts now.

Their licences were suspended after they failed to submit their educational certificates.

The CAA on Friday had suspended licenses of over 28 pilots and served them show-cause notices.

The letter lists pilots from different airlines and reads that “the pilots used illegal means and deliberately presented forged record of the examination, in order to avail the Air Transport Pilot License (ATPL).”

Pilots whose names are in the list have been served show-caused notices and have been asked to surrender their air transport licenses with the CAA.

They have also been barred from flying with immediate effect.

The pilots have been asked to explain as to why a disciplinary action should not be taken against them.

Last week, the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) had dismissed four captains among 50 officials from service over holding fake degrees.

A CAA report, on December 28, had revealed that at least five pilots of PIA do not even hold a matriculation certificate.

A Supreme Court bench heard a case pertaining to fake degrees of PIA pilots under the stewardship of Chief Justice Main Saqib Nisar at the Lahore registry of the apex court.

The CAA submitted a report to the court, which highlighted that degrees of seven pilots were found to be bogus, while five pilots had not even passed matriculation examination.

Pakistan avoid innings defeat, delay South Africa victory charge

Pakistan avoid innings defeat, delay South Africa victory charge
Half-centuries by Shan Masood, Asad Shafiq and Babar Azam enabled Pakistan to avoid an innings defeat and take the second Test against South Africa at Newlands into a fourth day.

Pakistan were bowled out in the last over of the third day for 294 on Saturday, leaving South Africa 41 runs to win.

A provision for an extra half hour was not used because only 20 minutes or five overs of play would have been possible.

Masood hit a composed 61 and Shafiq and Azam both played aggressively to score 88 and 72 respectively.

Dale Steyn and Kagiso Rabada both took four wickets to get South Africa to the brink of victory.

Steyn drew level with Richard Hadlee of New Zealand in tenth place on 431 wickets on the all-time Test wicket-takers list.

Masood and Shafiq shared the most enterprising partnership of the match when they put on 132 in 132 minutes off 168 balls for the third wicket.

Steyn broke the stand when Masood was caught behind by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and Philander followed up having Shafiq caught behind after a sparkling innings in which he hit 12 fours and a six in facing 118 balls.

Shafiq had looked set to make his second century in successive appearances at Newlands after he made 111 in the 2012/13 fixture between the two countries.

A mini-collapse followed but Azam batted well with the tail in scoring 72 off 87 balls.

Azam was ninth out, caught at first slip off Rabada when Pakistan were only 16 runs ahead 15 minutes before the scheduled close.

A second successive win for South Africa inside three days seemed likely when Mohammad Abbas was caught off Philander seven minutes and eight runs later when the extra half hour would have been enough to finish the match.

But after checking a replay, Philander was no-balled and Abbas and last man Shaheen Afridi took the game into a fourth day.

PIA tells overweight cabin crew to trim down or face the axe

National flag carrier sends memo to 1,800 cabin crew.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) seems to be constantly mired in controversy as of late with the national flag carrier now ordering members of the cabin crew to reduce their weight within six months.

The airline is cracking down on what it terms the “excess weight” of some of its cabin crew.

In a memo distributed to approximately 1,800 cabin crew working saying they must reduce trim down or face being grounded.

The order, issued January 1, 2019, by Aamir Bashir, the national flag carrier’s general manager of flight services, advises that official excess weight limits would be cut back by five pounds a month.

Currently, flight attendants who are 30 pounds over are still eligible for flight duty.

PIA issues its crew a suggested weight chart for differing heights and body types.

For a “medium frame” woman of 5 feet 7 inches height (1.7 meters), for example, the guide is 133 to 147 pounds.

“Weight check of all the cabin crew will be carried out at their base stations respectively and comprehensive data will be maintained for perusal of management,” according to the memo.

Those already “on weight check” need to report monthly to a “grooming cell” — the term is not defined any further — to receive clearance to fly.

‘Slim, smart and fit’

Around 100 — just over 5% — of the crew would need to lose weight by July 1 to avoid grounding, Mashhood Tajwar, a PIA spokesman said.

Tajwar described the crackdown on overweight flight crew as a “regular, routine matter,” and suggested that the memo was issued as standards for weight had lapsed over time, and was issued to ensure that the flight attendants were “slim, smart and fit.”

“No one would like to have shabby crew in the aircraft,” he said, adding that the airline had received complaints about “obese” flight attendants, but did not elaborate on how many passengers had taken issue with their cabin crews’ appearances.

He said that the initiative was put in place for reasons of “both” appearance and health, and insisted that PIA was not alone in insisting their cabin crews hit weight targets.

CDA operation on PPP leader's lawn is political oppression: Bilawal Zardari

CDA operation on PPP leader's lawn is political oppression: Bilawal Zardari
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Saturday demolished the lawn of PPP Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari's house, claiming that it was built on encroached land that belonged to the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU).

The move was strongly condemned by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who described the operation on Bukhari's residence as "a tool of political oppression".

"The operation against Nayyar Bukhari's house is shameful," said Bilawal in a statement. "It is an attempt to suppress political opinion."

The CDA recently decided to conduct an anti-encroachment drive to clear the land that belongs to QAU. According to a joint action committee of the university, about 298 acres had been encroached upon. Earlier this week, following protests from QAU joint action committee members, sources in CDA and Islamabad Capital Territory administration had said that an operation was being planned to retrieve QAU land from the encroachers.

Bilawal demanded that the authorities also conduct an operation at Banigala — Prime Minister Imran Khan's personal residence. It is pertinent to mention here that a suo motu case regarding houses allegedly built on encroached land in Banigala is being heard in the Supreme Court.

PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari also came to Bukhari's defence, advising the government to wise up.

"Nayyar Bukhari is being targeted for political revenge," the former president said. "His house was attacked under the cloak of [an encroachment] operation.

"He has all the ownership documents. This kind of a maneuver is political blackmailing. He (Bukhari) will not be scared by these vengeful activities."

The apex court had taken up illegal constructions in Banigala on a letter written by Prime Minister Khan. The premier had invited the court’s attention towards the large-scale encroachment on the botanical garden, unchecked and unplanned construction in Banigala, massive denuding due to large scale tree felling and pollution of the Rawal Lake due to sewage.

The court ordered the regularisation of properties built in Bani Gala but the CDA has held off the procedure until the revision of the city's master plan.

Three dead, 4 injured in California bowling alley shooting: Police

A late-night fight at a coastal Los Angeles suburban bowling alley turned deadly on Friday night, killing three men and injuring four.

The Torrance Police Department responded to calls of “shots fired” at the Gable House Bowl, in Torrance, California, shortly before midnight.

Multiple victims were found with gunshot wounds inside Gable House Bowl, which is described on its website as a gaming venue that offers bowling, laser tag and an arcade.

Police said three men died at the scene and four male victims were injured, two of whom were transported to a hospital for unknown injuries. The other two injured sought their own medical attention.

Authorities have not released details about what led to the shooting, but witnesses said it stemmed from a fight between two large groups of people at the bowling alley.

Wes Hamad, a 29-year-old Torrance resident, was at the bowling alley with his 13-year-old niece and cousin when he saw a “huge fight” break out. Hamad said the brawl, which lasted about five minutes, blocked the entrance of Gable House Bowl and devolved into “complete chaos.”

“I grabbed my niece and started running toward the far end of the bowling alley,” he said. “As we were running, we heard 15 shots.”

As he was leaving, Hamad said he saw a woman weeping over a man who was had multiple gunshot wounds in his head and neck.

Damone Thomas was in the karaoke section of Gable House Bowl, a regular stop for him and his friends after work on Fridays, when people ran in saying there was a shooting. The 30-year-old Los Angeles resident said his friend flipped over one of the tables to shield them as they heard gunshots.

Thomas said he didn't feel scared because he was “just trying to survive.” But when he was driving back home, he said he realised how traumatic the situation was and said he hasn't been able to fall asleep.

“Closing my eyes, all I can see is the women against the wall crying, not knowing what to do,” he said.

Both Thomas and Hamad said they had ever witnessed any violence there in the past, but Hamad said he had stopped going for a while because he heard someone with a gun was recently seen there.

“I definitely won't be going back anymore,” he added.

Gas leak likely cause of 6 deaths in Poland 'Escape Room' fire

Gas leak likely cause of 6 deaths in Poland 'Escape Room' fire
Investigators in Poland on Saturday blamed a gas leak in a heating system at an “Escape Room” for a fire that killed five teenage girls and injured a man.

The bodies of the 15-year-old victims were found on Friday in Koszalin, in northern Poland, after firefighters extinguished a blaze in an adjacent room. Prosecutors said that carbon monoxide inhalation was the likely cause of the deaths.

A 26-year-old man employed at the location was hospitalised with burns. Koszalin prosecutor Ryszard Gasiorowski said a leak in the bottled gas heating system at the location was a probable cause of the fire.

Earlier, firefighters blamed faulty electric wiring and substandard security procedures.

Gasiorowski said the fire probably broke out in the reception room and blocked the employee's way to evacuate the girls. Autopsies will be carried out to confirm the cause of the deaths.

He said firefighters who put out the blaze and other witnesses were being questioned. The condition of the injured employee didn't immediately allow for his questioning.

On Sunday, national fire chief Leszek Suski said that electrical wiring at the location was makeshift and too close to flammable materials. “Security was not ensured and that led to the tragedy,” Suski said.

He said there was no proper evacuation route and a “lot of negligence” at the location.

A spokesman for local firefighters, Tomasz Kubiak, said the units responding to the blaze had to use specialised equipment and force their way into the “Escape Room.”

Poland's interior minister has ordered fire safety inspections at more than 1,000 “Escape Room” locations across the country. The first inspections were being held on Saturday, the interior ministry said.

Previously, there was no official requirement for fire safety certificates at such locations. Highly popular among teenagers in Poland, the “Escape Room” game has players locked inside a room or building and they must find clues that help them get out.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki sent condolences to the victims' relatives. Officials have extended psychological, psychiatric and other support to the families. The school which the teenagers attended was extending counselling and support to their friends and colleagues.

Students and residents attended a Catholic Mass on Saturday noon at the local church. Local residents were placing flowers and lights in front of the location, a detached house. The girls, friends from one school class, were celebrating one of their birthdays.

Those who feel unsafe in India, should be bombed, says BJP's MLA

Those who feel unsafe in India, should be bombed, says BJP's MLA
Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)’s Member of Assembly Vikram Saini said that those who feel unsafe in India should be bombed, Times of India reported.

In a video, the BJP represent can be seen issuing one threat after another:

“Those who are unsafe in this country are anti-nationals and do not deserve to be [here]. Give me a ministry and I will attach bombs on their posteriors and blast,” the BJP aspiring minister expressed outrage at a flag raising ceremony in UP’s Muzaffarnagar.

When asked about his aggressive demeanour he responded by saying that it was his usual parlance and of the people in his village.

The BJP leader lashed out at the Congress for repealing previously mandatory recitation of Vande Mataram in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

“A law should be introduced against such people who are against Vande Mataram and they should be considered anti-nationals.”

Saini has encouraged violence along communal lines even in the past. Earlier he shunned New Year celebrations saying that they were ‘christian’ not ‘hindu’ festivities.

Hackers seize control of 1000s of Google Chromecasts to promote PewDiePie

Youtube star PewDiePie (left), a Chromecast device (right).
In a bizarre hacking case, over 72,000 Chromecasts were infiltrated to expose a vulnerability to users while at the same time promoting the hackers’ favorite YouTuber, PewDiePie.

The hackers, who go by HackerGiraffe and J3ws3r, targeted thousands of Chromecast streaming dongles, Google Home smart TVs, and speakers with built-in Chromecast technologies.

They were able to do so by exploiting a misconfigured router security bug that Google has been aware of since 2014.

The hacked devices displayed a security warning reading: “YOUR Chromecast/Smart TV is exposed to the public internet and is exposing sensitive information about you! To find more about what to do and how to fix this, visit https://bit.ly/CastHack for more information. You should also subscribe to PewDiePie.”

The message linked to a website set up by the hackers called CastHack. It contains a link to subscribe to the YouTuber’s channel. The website also explains what has happened to the hacking victims and how they are exposed to potential hackers.

“What WIFI your Chromecast/Google Home is connected to, bluetooth devices it has paired to, how long it's been on, what WiFi networks your device remembers, what alarms you have set, and much more,” it explains, going on to warn hackers can “remotely play media on your device, rename your device, factory reset or reboot the device, force it to forget all wifi networks, force it to pair to a new bluetooth speaker/wifi point, and so on.”

HackerGiraffe and J3ws3r previously gained notoriety for hacking over 50,000 printers around the world and commanding them to print out flyers encouraging people to subscribe to PewDiePie’s YouTube channel.

Since the Chromecast hack gained traction, HackerGiraffe deleted its Twitter account and wrote a farewell letter on PasteBin in which they explained the pressure of getting caught was too great to continue.

“I just wanted to inform people of their vulnerable devices while supporting a YouTuber I liked,” they wrote. “I never meant any hard [sic], nor did I ever have any ill intentions. I’m sorry if anything I’ve done has made you feel under attack or threatened.”
“@pewdiepie, I love your content man, keep on going,” they added.

HackerGiraffe accessed the devices by exploiting a Chromecast flaw which allowed them to display a message on the televisions connected to them. They accessed routers that still have the default Universal Plug and Play [UPnP] enabled, which leaves them vulnerable to infiltration, as UPnP forwards internal network points out to the internet, making Chromecasts accessible.

As explained on the CastHack website, users can disable this to increase their security.

A US budget airline is asking passengers to tip flight attendants when they serve refreshments

Frontier Airlines
You tip your waiter, your bartender, your delivery driver, and basically anyone in a hotel — but how about your in-flight cabin crew? Chances are, probably not. Until now.

US-based Frontier Airlines has started asking passengers to tip their cabin crew after they bring refreshments around the plane.

The revelation was spotted by popular flights blog The Points Guy after one of its writers flew with the domestic airline.

The author of the blog post, JT Genter, said he was handed a mobile tablet by a flight attendant after ordering his drinks. The tablet prompted him to tip the crew with handy buttons for 15%, 20%, or 25% of his bill and another for "custom gratuity."

frontier tipping

"Gratuities are appreciated!" a message reads on the screen, which Genter photographed. However, there is, of course, an option for leaving no gratuity at all.

"I've flown more than 350 flights on 51 different airlines in the past three years, but I'd never experienced an airline ask for a tip," Genter wrote.

A Frontier spokesperson told TPG: "Currently tips are shared amongst all members of the flight attendant crew on a given flight.

"Effective January 1, 2019, flight attendants will earn tips on their individual sales."

The ultra-low-cost airline also told Genter that no portion of the tips was kept by the company itself.

Asked if gratuities were meant as extra earnings for flight attendants or "considered a consequential part of their earnings," Frontier told Genter: "Both. Many flight attendants see the in-flight tip program as a way to supplement their income."

It is, as yet, unclear how popular the scheme is with passengers and flight staff, but if it takes off then you may soon see a gratuity charge coming to a budget airline near you.

Chewing the Fat with Pakistan's BBQ Masters

A Pakistani man cooks grilled meat at the Charsi (Hashish) Tikka restaurant in Namak Mandi in Peshawar, Dec. 6, 2018.
The sweet aroma of mutton smoke drifts through a maze of crumbling alleyways, a barbecue tang that for decades has lured meat-eaters from across Pakistan to the frontier city of Peshawar.

The ancient city, capital of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has retained its reputation for some of Pakistan's tastiest cuisine despite bearing the brunt of the country's bloody war with militancy.

University student Mohammad Fahad had long heard tales of Peshawar's famed mutton.

"Earlier we heard of Peshawar being a dangerous place," he told AFP — but security has improved in recent years, and he finally made the hours-long journey from the eastern city of Lahore to see if it could live up to the hype.

"We are here just to see what the secret to this barbecue is," he says, excitedly awaiting his aromatic portion in Namak Mandi — "Salt Market" — located in the heart of Peshawar.

The hearty cuisine comes from generations-old recipes emanating from the nearby Pashtun tribal lands along the border with Afghanistan.

It is feted for its simplicity compared with the intricate curries and spicy dishes from Pakistan's eastern plains and southern coast.

"Its popularity is owed to the fact that it is mainly meat-based and that always goes down well across the country," says Pakistani cookbook author Sumayya Usmani.

The famed Nisar Charsi (hashish smoker) Tikka — named after its owner's renowned habit — in Namak Mandi chalks up its decades of success to using very little in the way of spices.

For its barbecue offerings, tikkas — cuts of meat — are generously salted and sandwiched on skewers between cubes of fat for tenderness and taste, and slow-cooked over a wood fire.

Its other famed dish, karahi — or curry stew — is made with slices of mutton pan-cooked in heaped chunks of white fat carved from the sheep's rump, along with sparing amounts of green chilli and tomatoes.

Both plates are served with stacks of oven-fresh naan and bowls of fresh yogurt.

"It is the best food in the entire world," gushes co-owner Nasir Khan, adding that the restaurant sources some of the best meat in the country and serves customers from across Pakistan daily along with local regulars.

By Khan's calculations, the restaurant goes through hundreds of kilograms of meat a day — or about two dozen sheep — with hundreds if not thousands served.

Hash and meat

The clientele at Nisar's Charsi and other Salt Market eateries usually arrive in large groups, with experienced customers ordering food by the kilo and guiding cleaver-wielding butchers to their preferred cuts, which are then cooked immediately.

Peshawar's improved security has given business a boost, Khan said.

"We had a lot of troubles and pains," he admitted, remembering friends lost during the years of devastating bombings and suicide attacks.

But some customers said they had been loyal to Peshawar's cuisine even during the bloodshed.

"I've been coming here for more than 20 years now," said Hammad Ali, 35, who travelled to Peshawar with eight other colleagues from Pakistan's capital Islamabad for a gluttonous lunch.

"This taste is unique, that's why we have come all this way."

Orders generally take close to an hour to prepare, with customers quaffing tea and occasionally smoking hash ahead of the meal.

"They smoke it openly here," explained Nisar Charsi's head chef Mukam Pathan. "When someone smokes one joint of hash, they eat around two kilos of meat."

For those looking for a little less lamb, the city's renowned chapli kebab offers an alternative.

The kebab is typically made of minced beef and a mix of spices kneaded into patties and deep fried on a simmering iron skillet.

Rokhan Ullah — owner of Tory Kebab House — said the dish is most popular on cold, winter days that see ravenous customers flocking to its four branches across the city, overwhelming staff and making orders hard to fill.

"They eat it with passion... because one enjoys hot food when the weather is cold," explained Ullah, who plans to expand in major cities across Pakistan.

Customer Muhib Ullah has been eating kebabs three to four days a week for the last decade.

"This is the tastiest and most famous food in Peshawar," he declared.

Hours-long meals

For regular barbecue eater Omar Aamir Aziz, it is not just the heaping portions of meat that attract foodies to Peshawari cuisine, but the culture that has built up around the meal.

Other cities in Pakistan and abroad have more in the way of entertainment and nightlife options.

But in deeply conservative Peshawar, eating out is the primary leisure activity.

Meals tend to last for hours after the meat has been consumed as conversation continues over steaming cups of green tea.

"That's what we have and that's our speciality," says Aziz. "We've been doing this for two, three, four hundred years."

Japan's sushi king pays record price for bluefin tuna

Japan's 'Tuna King' paid millions of dollars for the 278kg bluefin tuna [Reuters]
A Japanese sushi tycoon paid a record $3.1m for a giant tuna at the first predawn New Year auction in Tokyo's new fish market on Saturday.

Self-styled "Tuna King" Kiyoshi Kimura forked over the whopping sum for a 278kg bluefin tuna, an endangered species that was caught off Japan's northern coast.

"The tuna looks so tasty and very fresh, but I think I did too much," Kimura, who runs the popular Sushi Zanmai chain, told reporters.

"The price was higher than originally thought, but I hope our customers will eat this excellent tuna."

Kimura has been the highest bidder at the new year auction for several years. He paid the previous record of 155 million yen ($1.4m) for a fish in 2013.

Although the auction prices were way above usual for bluefin tuna, wholesalers and sushi tycoons have been known to pay eye-watering prices for the biggest and best fish, especially at the first auction of the New Year.

'Black diamond'
Later in the day, sushi chefs sliced up the giant fish with special knives resembling Japanese swords at Kimura's main restaurant. Hundreds of sushi lovers queued for a taste.

"I have come here every year to eat New Year sushi but this tuna is tastier than ever," Reiko Yamada, a 71-year-old housewife, told the AFP news agency.

Japan consumes a large portion of the global bluefin catch, a highly prized sushi ingredient known as "kuro maguro" (black tuna) and dubbed the "black diamond" by sushi connoisseurs because of its scarcity.

A single piece of "otoro", or the fish's fatty underbelly, can cost dozens of dollars at high-end Tokyo restaurants.

Surging consumption of the Pacific bluefin tuna in Japan and overseas has led experts to warn it faces possible extinction, with stocks depleting by 96 percent from pre-industrial levels.

New market
The 2019 auction was the first New Year sale to take place at the new fish market in Toyosu, on the site of a former gas plant.

In previous years, the market was held at Tsukiji, which was the world's biggest fish market and a popular tourist attraction in an area packed with restaurants and shops.

Opened in 1935, Tsukiji was best known for its predawn daily auctions of tuna, caught from all corners of the world, for use by everyone from Michelin-star sushi chefs to ordinary grocery stores.

The new market at Toyosu hopes to attract tourists who previously visited Tsukiji.

"I sincerely hope this market will be loved by many people," said Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike, who attended the sale, wearing the white rubber boots favoured by auctioneers.

The move to Toyosu was repeatedly delayed because of concerns over soil contamination.

Pentagon Denies Scaling Back Operations in Somalia

A man walks near destroyed buildings after a bomb blast in the capital city of Mogadishu, Somalia, Dec. 22, 2018. Police say a suicide car bomb exploded near the presidential palace killing and wounding a number of people.
The U.S. Defense Department is denying a media report the U.S. is planning to reduce its operations in Somalia.

Pentagon spokeswoman Navy Commander Candice Tresch told VOA Friday: “There have been no recent policy changes regarding U.S. operations in Somalia. We continue to support the Federal Government of Somalia’s efforts to degrade al-Shabab.”

NBC News reported Friday the U.S. is planning to scale back its operations in Somalia because U.S. airstrikes have “taken out” a number of the militant group’s senior operatives.

The Pentagon says “the U.S. conducted 47 precision airstrikes in 2018 against al-Shabab militants. In 2017, the U.S. conducted 35 air strikes and in 2016, conducted 15 air strikes. The first U.S.-led air strike of 2019 occurred Jan. 2 to diminish al-Shabab’s freedom of movement and to increase pressure on the terrorist network in the area.”

U.S. military officials say there are and estimated 3,000 to 7,000 al-Shabab fighters and 70 to 250 ISIS-Somalia fighters in Somalia as of August 2018.

There are about 500 U.S. Department of Defense personnel in Somalia.

Trump, Lawmakers Fail to End Shutdown; Weekend Talks Planned

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is surrounded by reporters as he returns from meeting with President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders at the White House, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, Jan. 2, 2019.
A partial U.S. government shutdown showed no sign of ending soon Friday as White House and congressional aides prepared to work through the weekend to try to resolve a stalemate over funding for U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall.

Trump said he'd had a "very productive" meeting with congressional leaders to try to end the shutdown, which was triggered by disagreement over $5.6 billion in funding to build the wall.

But Democratic congressional leaders characterized the White House meeting differently.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who assumed leadership of the newly sworn in House Democratic majority Thursday, called the almost two-hour meeting "contentious." She continued her oft-repeated assertion that agreement on the wall's funding "cannot be resolved until we open up the government."

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer told reporters the president threatened to keep the government closed for "a very long period of time, months or even years."

Despite comments from the Democratic lawmakers that little progress was made, Trump said that "we're on the same path" to reopen the government. He touted the benefits of "a solid steel or concrete structure" along the border.

The White House said talks on the funding impasse with House and Senate staff members were set for 11 a.m. EST Saturday.

Vice President Mike Pence, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and adviser Jared Kushner have been chosen to work with the congressional delegation.

'We're not doing a wall'

The House passed a bill Thursday to reopen shuttered federal government agencies. The measure did not, however, include the $5.6 billion the president has demanded for the wall.

"We're not doing a wall," Pelosi vowed Thursday. She suggested that the money could better be used for improving border security technology and hiring more border agents.

However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called the House plan to end the shutdown "political theater."

The Senate passed an identical bill last month, while Republicans still controlled both chambers of Congress.

The legislation passed Thursday in the House called for the reopening of the federal government and the funding of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) until early February.

While Trump himself has not used the word "veto," other White House officials have. One official said the president told Democratic leaders he would "look foolish" if he ended the shutdown.

Trump is blaming Democrats for the current situation after insisting on Dec. 11 he would be "proud" to shut down the government if his demand for wall funding was not met.

On Friday, in response to a reporter's question, Trump defended that comment. "I'm very proud of what I'm doing," he said. "I don't call it a shutdown."

But he confirmed that he'd told Democrats a shutdown could go on for months or a year or longer.

"I don't think it will, but I am prepared and I think I can speak for Republicans in the House and Republicans in the Senate. They feel very strongly about having a safe country, having a border that makes sense," he said.

DHS seeks help

Also Friday, the Pentagon said it had received a request from DHS for additional help securing the U.S. southern border.

A defense official told VOA that the Pentagon was reviewing the request for "additional capabilities at the border." The official would not elaborate on what specific capabilities DHS requested.

DHS is among the government agencies left unfunded because of the shutdown, but Congress has funded the Defense Department through Sept. 30, 2019.

About 800,000 federal workers have been furloughed or are working without pay. As of Friday, the partial shutdown had been in effect for 14 days. This is the fourth-longest government shutdown, partial or full, in the last 40 years.

A Reuters/IPSOS poll conducted mostly after the shutdown began found that 47 percent of adults held Trump responsible for the stoppage, while 33 percent blamed congressional Democrats and 7 percent blamed congressional Republicans.

Pakistan bowl South Africa out for 431

Mohammad Amir took three quick wickets in the morning session
Mohammad Amir took three quick wickets in the morning session to bowl out South Africa for 431 in the first innings of the second Test against South Africa in Newlands.

Amir dismissed overnight batsmen Quinton de Kock for 59 after he added just four runs to his overnight score of 55. He next sent Vernon Philander packing for 16 followed by Kagiso Rabada for 11.

Shaheen Shah Afridi picked his fourth wicket of the second Test by dismissing Dale Steyn after he smashed 13 off 10 balls.

South Africa have a lead of 254 runs.

South Africa resumed batting on 382-6 on day three of the second Test with a lead of 205 runs and four wickets in hand after captain Faf du Plessis led from the front with a hard-earned century to give the hosts a commanding 205-run advantage at the end of the second day of the second Test.

Du Plessis failed to score in either innings in the first Test in Pretoria last week but made 103 in a 226-ball knock as South Africa piled up 382 for six in reply to Pakistan’s 177 all out on opening day.

Du Plessis had to toil for his ninth Test century on an uneven pitch, hitting some superb shots through extra cover but also surviving being dropped on 96 to an easy catch down leg that Pakistan wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed spilt.

He was eventually out to a feint tickle off teenager Shaheen Shah, who finished the day with the best Pakistan figures of 3-112.

Demba Bavuma, who saw two reviews go his way, made 75 and it was his 156-run fifth wicket partnership with the skipper that enabled South Africa to take the game away from their opponents after losing two wickets early in the day.

“It was a challenging wicket but we tried to be as positive out there as we could be,” Bavuma said.

“Any kind of lead on this wicket is massive.

Our bowlers will be raring to go and looking to exploit it.”

South Africa were on 123-2 overnight but Hashim Amla (24) and Theunis de Bruyn (13) departed in the morning session before Bavuma, having scored three, was reprieved by the third umpire after appearing to be caught in the slips.

It was decided that the catch had been taken off the turf.

He also survived an lbw decision with the review going his way to the exasperation of Pakistan.

Bavuma was eventually caught by Sarfraz off Shaheen, who then also bagged du Plessis but only after another review, which this time went Pakistan’s way.

De Kock hit fours off his first two deliveries and never looked back as he raced to his half-century off 59 balls.

Maradona out of hospital after internal bleeding scare

Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona was released from hospital
Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona was released from hospital after being admitted earlier on Friday with internal bleeding in the stomach which was discovered during routine examinations, his daughter Dalma said.

“For those who were really worried about my dad I can tell you that he is well,” Dalma wrote on twitter after fears over her father’s health spread.

“He is going home soon.”

The 58-year-old was having a routine medical in his homeland before returning to Mexico, where he is coach of second division side Dorados de Sinaloa, when doctors discovered the problem.

However, a source close to the family told Reuters the problem was not serious and that the former Boca Juniors, Napoli and Barcelona midfielder, who famously led his country to the 1986 World Cup title, was not in any danger.

Another source said Maradona, who left the hospital without talking to the media, may have to undergo more tests.

Friday’s scare was the latest for Maradona, who has suffered frequent periods in hospital over the years, often due to the extravagant lifestyle that helped make him one of the most admired and iconic footballers of the 20th century.

He last fell ill at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he was filmed passing out in an executive box at the Argentina-Nigeria game.

Argentina won 2-1 to reach the last 16, where they were knocked out of the tournament by eventual winners France.

Maradona was taken into hospital in 2004 with severe heart and respiratory problems linked to cocaine use.

He later underwent drug rehabilitation in Cuba and Argentina before a stomach-stapling operation in 2005 helped him lose weight.

In 2007 he checked himself into a clinic in Buenos Aires to help him overcome alcohol abuse problems.

In recent months he has walked with the aid of crutches due to problems with his knees.

The unexpected news of his admittance to hospital on Friday came just hours after Maradona’s lawyer confirmed he would coach in Mexico for a second consecutive season.

Maradona took over at struggling Dorados de Sinaloa in September and got them into the playoffs where they lost to Atletico San Luis.

“Diego Maradona has arranged to continue with the Dorados de Sinaloa and will stay as coach of the team for the whole season,” his agent Matias Morla wrote on twitter.

The club said his assistant Jose Maria Martinez would lead the team until Maradona returned.

Australia stumble after solid start in Sydney

Australian cricketer Peter Handscomb
Australia’s batting woes returned on the third day of the fourth test on Saturday with the home side slumping to 236 for six when bad light and rain brought an early end to their response to India’s mammoth first-innings tally.

The tourists, who declared on 622-7 late on Friday, only need a draw to claim a first series win Down Under and Australia’s hopes of salvaging anything from the match faded with the loss of five wickets after lunch.

Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Shaun Marsh and Travis Head were all dismissed in the second session, before captain Tim Paine followed shortly after the tea break.

Peter Handscomb, unbeaten on 28, and fast bowler Pat Cummins, who had made 25, were at the crease when bad light stopped play at a Sydney Cricket Ground swathed in pink for the McGrath Foundation breast cancer support charity day.

Our first priority should be Education: CJP

Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar
Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said it was imperative for any country aiming progress to have quality education and an honest leadership.

Speaking at a gathering in Lahore, the CJP remarked that an honest leader takes the country forward and adds to development of the nation.

Mr. Nisar expressed grave concern over lack of education among children in Pakistan.

He said he was astonished to discover a few schools where landlords had kept their cattle.

He stated no work was supreme than serving the humanity.

He was of the view that “our first priority should be education.”

“I am extremely displeased with below-par literacy rate in the country,” he said.

He said the education sector was the most neglected, “and I have personally seen this reality after visiting several areas of the country.”

The CJP said another important aspect of the nation’s development was dispensation of justice.

He asserted that the society couldn’t sustain a balance if the judiciary failed to provide justice to the masses.

The chief justice said: “We do not have an institution for dispensation of justice as it should have been in an Islamic country.”

The law provided to us by the English rulers doesn’t fit our society and the religion.

Nawaz challenges imprisonment in Al-Azizia case

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
The lawyers of ousted prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, on Saturday re-submitted an appeal at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the accountability court verdict sentencing Sharif in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills case.

The appeal was first filed by the legal team of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo on January 1, but it was returned by the registrar office after it marked a few objections on it.

Counsel of Sharif, Munawar Iqbal, addressed all objections on the appeal and re-filed it today at the IHC.

The registrar office will now again examine the plea and subsequently put it up before the court for hearing.

On December 24, the accountability court announced its verdict in two National Accountability Bureau’s references namely Al-Azizia Steel Mill and Flagship Investment and punished Sharif to seven years in prison and ordered him to pay $25million as fine.

However, he was acquitted of all charges in the Flagship Investment case.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on January 3 moved two appeals in the IHC challenging the accountability court verdict in the Al-Azizia and Flagship Investment references against Nawaz Sharif.

In an appeal to the IHC, the anti-graft watchdog pleaded to increase the sentence awarded to Sharif in the Al-Azizia case and overturn his acquittal in the Flagship reference.

“The accountability court passed the impugned judgment in slipshod and a cursory manner without adverting to evidence available on record,” reads the petition.

“There is absolute misreading and non-reading of the evidence tendered by the prosecution so much so that the prosecution witnesses stood the test of being sagacious and tendered un-implacable deposition despite lengthy cross examination.”

In another appeal challenging the Al-Azizia case verdict, NAB stated that the prosecution had presented ample evidence beyond any shadow of doubt to prove its case. “No mitigating circumstances were available in the case justifying the sentence of 7 years instead of a maximum of 15 years.”

Thai storm leaves trail of floods, blackouts, spares tourist islands

Floods caused by Tropical Storm Pabuk left nearly 30,000 people in evacuation shelters across southern Thailand
Floods and blackouts caused by Tropical Storm Pabuk left nearly 30,000 people in evacuation shelters across southern Thailand Saturday, as relieved tourists stranded on islands further north were spared the worst and began to plot routes home.

Pabuk, a once in three-decades weather system, packed winds of up to 75 kilometres (45 miles) an hour and brought heavy rains and storm surges as it lashed the entire south of the kingdom on Friday, downing power cables and causing widespread flooding.

A fisherman died in southern Pattani province early Friday as high waves smashed into his boat and another crew member was reported missing.

But the storm tacked away from the key tourist islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao where large numbers of tourists hunkered down for 24 hours in heavy rains, unable to leave as airports closed and ferry services were cancelled.

“There were no casualties, there is some sunshine today and I’m confident some tourists will be able to leave today as ferries and flights resume,” Kittipop Roddon, Koh Samui district chief said.

But “red flag” warnings banning swimming off what are normally sun-baked paradise beaches at this time of year were still in place.

“It’s all over. All 10,000 tourists are safe. I am relieved,” Krikkrai Songthanee, district chief of neighbouring Koh Phangan, an island famed for its full-moon parties, told AFP, adding only minor damage had been caused by high winds.

But holidaymakers keen to leave the islands face long delays as transport links are slowly reopened on Saturday.

The storm was downgraded early Saturday to a depression with wind speeds slackening as it moved into the Andaman Sea, the Meteorological Department said.

Pabuk made landfall on Friday afternoon in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, south of the tourist hubs on the Gulf of Thailand, hammering the coastal province with rain.

Authorities warned of flash floods as some parts remained inundated by a combination of rainfall and storm surges.

Around 200,000 people were left without power as dozens of electricity poles were toppled by high winds or falling trees.

Some 30,000 customers remained without power early Saturday, according to an update by the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

A similar number of people remained in evacuation shelters, waiting for floods to recede and power to be restored, it added.

Trump threatens years-long government shutdown, emergency powers to build wall

US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump threatened to keep the US government partially shut for months or years on Friday after he and Democratic leaders failed to resolve their dispute over Trump’s demand for $5.6 billion to build a wall on the Mexican border.

After Democratic congressional leaders refused Trump’s requests at a meeting in the White House Situation Room, the Republican president threatened to take the controversial step of declaring a national emergency and building the wall without congressional approval.

Trump is withholding his support for a bill that would fully fund the government until he secures money for the wall.

As a result, around 800,000 public workers have been unpaid, with about a quarter of the federal government closed for two weeks.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats had told Trump during the meeting to end the shutdown.

“He resisted,” Schumer said.

“In fact, he said he’d keep the government closed for a very long period of time, months or even years.”

Trump confirmed that comment but painted a more positive picture of the meeting, the first since a new era of divided government began when Democrats took control of the House of Representatives on Thursday.

“We had a very, very productive meeting, and we’ve come a long way,” Trump said.

According to a source familiar with the White House discussion, Trump opened the meeting with a speech that lasted at least 15 minutes in which he insisted on the need for billions of dollars to fund a border wall.

The source also said Trump brought up recent impeachment threats during those remarks, arguing that he had notched a strong performance as president and should not be a target for impeachment.

The president later told reporters that Nancy Pelosi, the new Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives, said Democrats were not looking to impeach him.

National emergency?

Raising the stakes in his tussle with the newly emboldened Democrats, Trump threatened extraordinary measures to build the wall, which he says is needed to stem the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the United States.

A reporter asked Trump whether he had considered declaring a national emergency to build the wall.

“Yes, I have. And I can do it if I want,” Trump said.

“We can call a national emergency because of the security of our country . I may do it."

"But we can call a national emergency and build it very quickly."

"And it’s another way of doing it. But if we can do it through a negotiated process, we’re giving that a shot.”

Emergency powers have been invoked by previous US presidents during times of war.

Senator Jack Reed, the senior Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, criticized the comments, saying in a statement, “Declaring a trumped-up national emergency in order to skirt congressional approval is wrong.”

The US Constitution assigns Congress the power to fund the federal government, so Trump likely would face legal challenges if he tried to bypass Congress on financing the wall. Building a wall and having Mexico pay for it - was one of Trump’s main promises when he ran for president in 2016.

Trump’s wall project is estimated to cost about $23 billion.

Democrats have called the wall immoral, ineffective and medieval.

Pelosi said Friday’s meeting with Trump was “sometimes contentious” but that they agreed to continue talking.

“But we recognize on the Democratic side that we really cannot resolve this until we open up government and we made that very clear to the president,” she said.

Credit rating agency Moody’s said the shutdown will cause minimal US economic and credit market disruption but there could be a more severe impact on financial markets and the broad economy if the closure is protracted.

A Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll last week showed that 50 percent of the public blames Trump for the shutdown and 7 percent blames Republican lawmakers, while 32 percent blames Democrats.

In a Dec. 11 meeting with Pelosi and Schumer, Trump said he would be “proud” to shut the government over the security issue and would not blame Democrats.

He has since said they are responsible.

White House officials and congressional staffers will meet at 11 AM EST (1600 GMT) on Saturday to try to end the impasse, White House spokesperson Hogan Gidley said.

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy told reporters that Trump had named Vice President Mike Pence, senior aide Jared Kushner and Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen to work over the weekend.

The partial shutdown is straining the country’s immigration system, worsening backlogs in courts and complicating hiring for employers.

Federal agencies such as the Justice Department, Commerce Department and departments of Agriculture, Labor, Interior and Treasury have been hit by the shutdown.

House Ways and Means Committee chairman Richard Neal, a Democrat, asked the Internal Revenue Service in a letter on Friday to explain the possible effects of the shutdown on the upcoming tax filing season for millions of Americans.

Grand jury extended in US special counsel's Trump-Russia probe

US Special Counsel Robert Mueller
The term of the grand jury being used by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation of possible collusion between Russia and President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign has been extended, an aide to the judge overseeing.

The extension is a sign that Mueller is not done presenting evidence before the grand jury in his investigation of US allegations of Russian interference in the election and any possible coordination between Moscow and Trump’s campaign.

The grand jury was empanelled by the US District Court in Washington in July 2017 for an 18-month term, the limit under federal rules.

The term can be extended if the court determines it to be in the public interest to do so.

“The Chief Judge has confirmed that the term of Grand Jury 17-01 has been extended,” Lisa Klem, special assistant to Chief Judge Beryl Howell said in a statement.

Howell did not confirm any length of the extension, Klem said.

A spokesperson for Mueller declined to comment.

A number of Trump’s allies, including his lawyer Rudy Giuliani, have repeatedly called on Mueller to wrap up his investigation.

Trump has called the investigation a “witch hunt” and has denied collusion with Moscow.

Russia has denied meddling in the election, contrary to the conclusion of US intelligence agencies that have said Moscow used hacking and propaganda to try to sow discord in the United States and boost Republican Trump’s chances against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Mueller’s investigation and other inquiries have clouded Trump’s two years in office.

Mueller has secured more than 30 indictments and guilty pleas and has spawned at least four federal probes.
