England Thrash Bangladesh by 106 runs

England Thrash Bangladesh by 106 runs
Jason Roy hit the highest individual score of the World Cup so far as England got their campaign back on track with a 106-run win over Bangladesh in Cardiff on Saturday.

Following a surprise defeat by Pakistan, which followed England´s opening 104-run rout of South Africa, captain Eoin Morgan urged the hosts to "stick to what we do well".

Tournament favourites England, whose rise to the top of the one-day international rankings since Bangladesh knocked them out of the 2015 World Cup has been based on aggressive batting, lived up to his words.

Roy´s 153 took England to an imposing 386 for six, leaving Bangladesh needing to surpass Ireland´s 329-7 against England in 2011, the highest score by any team batting second to win a World Cup match.

Despite Shakib Al Hasan´s 121 -- just the third Bangladesh World Cup hundred after Mahmudullah made two in 2015 -- the Tigers were never in the hunt.

On a Sophia Gardens ground where they famously beat Australia in a 2005 ODI, Bangladesh were eventually dismissed for 280 with seven balls to spare.

Their chase got off to a bad start when fast bowler Jofra Archer (3-29) dismissed Soumya Sarkar for two with a ball that clipped the top of the left-hander´s off stump.

Archer, whose 10 wicketless overs against Pakistan cost 79 runs, was far more threatening on Saturday as he reached speeds of 95 miles (153 kilometres) per hour.

But Shakib anchored the innings, flicking Archer for six on his way to a 95-ball century that also included nine fours.

Shakib put on 106 with Mushifqur Rahim (44), a partnership that ended when Roy, who dropped a straightforward chance against Pakistan, held a good catch at point.

And 169-3 soon became 170-4 when Mohammad Mithun fell for a duck after edging leg-spinner Adil Rashid to wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow.

The Test gloveman was behind the stumps after Jos Buttler suffered a hip injury during a typically dashing 64.

Shakib, who had hit fifties in a win over South Africa and a loss to New Zealand this World Cup, was eventually yorked by Ben Stokes to leave Bangladesh on the brink of defeat.

Pace bowling all-rounder Stokes followed up to finish with figures of 3-23.

It has been learnt that only Hamza Shehbaz would go to receive his father, whereas a few PML-N lawmakers and activists are likely to reach the airport too individually.

Roy and Bairstow get England off to rapid start against Bangladesh

Roy and Bairstow get England off to rapid start against Bangladesh
Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow denied Bangladesh an early breakthrough as England made a brisk start after being sent in to bat in a World Cup match in Cardiff on Saturday.

After 10 overs, England were 67 without loss – their best opening powerplay in three World Cup matches so far.

Roy was 38 not out and Bairstow 27 not out.

Both openers have come unstuck against spin during this tournament – a 104-run win for England over South Africa and an unexpected 14-run defeat by Pakistan.

So it was no surprise when Bangladesh opened the bowling with left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan.

But on a green-tinged, if slow, pitch, England played him comfortably enough.

Roy got the innings going with a straight-driven four in the second over off Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza and gave the same treatment to Shakib.

Englands openers also took advantage of the big square boundaries at Sophia Gardens to complete an all-run four as the slow-moving Mossadek Hossain struggled to get round at deep midwicket.

Bairstows four off Mohammad Saifuddin saw England's openers to a fifty partnership in 47 balls.

Bangladesh, like England, had won one and lost one of their two matches coming into Saturdays clash, with the Tigers beating South Africa before losing to New Zealand by two wickets.

Bangladesh defeated England at both the 2011 and 2015 World Cups.

England: Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (capt), Jos Buttler (wkt), Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood

Some elements creating unrest in the tribal areas: FM Shah

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Friday said some elements are creating unrest in the tribal areas to fulfil some foreign agenda.

Speaking to the media in Multan, Qureshi questioned whether those elements were serving the country or strengthening its economy.”Who brought peace in Waziristan? Who sacrificed their lives and eradicated the menace of terrorism from the area?" he asked.

Responding to a question about the opposition taking to the street after Eid, Qureshi said the opposition should not take any step against the country’s interest as protest demonstrations could harm economy and democracy.

“The opposition should learn from past experiences and avoid doing politics of agitation,” he said.

The foreign minister further said that protests and demonstrations will cause chaos and unrest in the country. “Who would be responsible in case of any loss of human life during the protest demonstrations”, he said.

“If the protests”, he said, “could help reduce inflation, then the opposition should go for that. The politics of agitation would not even be in their own interest.”

Qureshi added, “They [opposition] needed to not ignore the reason behind the rising inflation, which was the result of ill-conceived policies of past governments. The incumbent government was inviting foreign investors and the opposition’s protest would affect foreign investment.”

The government has liberalised visa policy to promote tourism, he added.

Responding to another question, he maintained that the defence budget was not reduced on the pressure of International Monetary Fund, but a decision in that regard was taken by the Pakistan Armed Forces voluntarily as evident from an Inter-Services Public Relations statement.

“Though the requirements of the armed forces were genuine, yet they made the decision to reduce the economic burden on the masses and in national interest only,” Qureshi added.

CWC 2019: Pakistan, Sri Lanka match Abandoned Due To Rain

Pakistan, Sri Lanka match Abandoned Due To Rain
The International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup 2019 match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka has been called off without a ball being bowled due to persistent rain.

Heavy rain in Bristol meant that no play was possible after the umpires called it off, presumably because of an unsafe outfield, with both sides picking up a point each.

Earlier, rain delayed the start of 11th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at Bristol County Ground.

Previously, Pakistan’s practice session was briefly delayed by rain. Sarfaraz Ahmed, the skipper, was the first to turn up on the ground and ran a couple laps on his own. The team appeared in good spirits as it began a game of football and the mood remained upbeat during fielding, batting and bowling practice.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka have won one and lost one game in the tournament.

Huawei signs deal to develop 5G networks in Russia

Huawei signs deal to develop 5G networks in Russia
Huawei Technologies has signed an agreement with Russian telecom company MTS to develop next-generation 5G networks in the country over the next year.

5G is the next-generation cellular network that offers faster data transfer speed and could enhance technologies such as autonomous driving, remote medical diagnosis and mobile payments.

The deal was signed Wednesday in Moscow, as Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin looked on. MTS said in a statement that it plans to work with Huawei on developing 5G technologies.

Huawei has also signed a draft agreement with the African Union that includes cooperation in 5G communications.

China has been championing Huawei, the world's biggest telecoms gear provider, as a national star as it races to be a global leader in advanced wireless networks amid fierce rivalry from the United States.

Beijing's ambitions have faced a major challenge from Washington, which has blacklisted Huawei just as it seeks to provide equipment for 5G networks in several countries.

Commenting on the announcement, Huawei ─ which produces both network equipment and mobile phones ─ said it will “fully support” Chinese operators to build 5G infrastructure.

“(We) believe that in the near future, China's 5G will lead the world,” Huawei said on Weibo.

Another Chinese phone maker, Vivo, said its 5G devices are ready for network testing and will be on sale once trials are complete.

The administration of President Donald Trump banned US companies in May from selling high-tech components to Huawei on national security grounds, though a 90-day reprieve was issued.

Several firms have already distanced themselves from Huawei, including Google, whose Android operating system runs the vast majority of smartphones in the world.

The move led to an escalation in the US-China trade war, with Beijing preparing its own blacklist of “unreliable” foreign companies.

China's Commerce Ministry says it will release the list in the near future. He said no particular company or industry is being targeted, and those that follow Chinese law don't need to worry.

US companies will have to seek approval for sales to Huawei once the list takes effect.

China hasn't said what action it might take against the entities included on its list.

Since last year, 5G trials have been conducted in Chinese cities ahead of plans to deploy the technology across the country in 2020, and now the government has given the green light.

The Industry and Information Technology Ministry said state-owned telecom providers China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Broadcasting Network Corporation received business licences to operate fifth-generation digital cellular mobile communication services.

“After the issuance of 5G licences, we will continue to welcome foreign companies to actively participate in China's 5G market, seek common development of China's 5G, and share the achievements of China's 5G development,” said Miao Wei, the minister of industry and information technology, according to the ministry's Twitter-like Weibo account.

China Mobile later said it would offer 5G services in 40 Chinese cities this year.

The United States has urged other countries to shun Huawei over concerns that its equipment could be used by Beijing's intelligence services.

UK's May quits as party leader, starting succession race

British Prime Minister Theresa May
British Prime Minister Theresa May steps down as leader of her Conservative Party on Friday, formally triggering the race for a successor who will try where she failed to deliver, Brexit.

May will remain prime minister until a new leader is chosen, likely in late July, but has relinquished control over the direction of Britain's tortuous departure from the European Union.

Brexit is still scheduled for Oct 31 but while her rivals thrash it out, the project remains stuck, with the only divorce plan agreed with Brussels stuck in parliament.

May took office after the 2016 referendum vote to leave the EU and has spent the past three years working on the plan, delaying Brexit twice to try to get it through. But she finally acknowledged defeat in a tearful resignation speech last month, the culmination of months of political turmoil that has slowly sapped all her authority.

Eleven Conservative MPs are currently vying to replace her, including former foreign minister Boris Johnson, but some are expected to drop out before Monday's deadline for nominations. The winner will have only a few months to decide whether to try to salvage May's plan, delay Brexit again — or sever ties with Britain's closest trading partner with no agreement at all.

They are under pressure from eurosceptic figurehead Nigel Farage, who has called for a “no deal” option and whose Brexit party topped European polls last month.

His party suffered a setback on Friday after narrowly missing out on winning its first parliamentary seat, losing to Labour in a by-election in the eastern city of Peterborough.

Despite winning, Labour's vote share fell by 17 per cent while the Tories plummeted by 25pc, highlighting the task facing May's successor.

Polling guru John Curtice told the BBC that the result showed Britain was now in a “different political world”.

“A lot of constituencies are now looking at four-party politics, and perhaps in others five-party politics,” said a disappointed Farage.

Power shift

May will formally relinquish her leadership in a private letter to her party on Friday, but no official events are planned to mark the day.

She put on a brave face this week when hosting US President Donald Trump for a state visit, before joining him and other world leaders to mark 75 years since the D-Day landings. But Trump used the trip to speak with Johnson and other candidates to replace her, emphasising where the political power in Britain now lies.

“She remains prime minister for a good few weeks yet,” May's spokesman insisted, noting that any successor must meet Queen Elizabeth II and assure the monarch they have the support of enough lawmakers to take over.

He said May would focus on domestic issues, but “in relation to Brexit, the prime minister said it wouldn't be for her to take this process forward”.

Trump has been highly critical of May's Brexit strategy and ahead of his visit to Britain, urged her successor to leave the bloc with no deal if necessary.

Johnson, a leading campaigner in the 2016 referendum who quit the government last year over May's plan, is among several would-be candidates who say they are willing to do this.

But Environment Secretary Michael Gove, another frontrunner, is open to another Brexit delay, while Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said leaving with no deal is “political suicide”.

Trump had a phone call with Johnson this week and met both Hunt and Farage, although a planned meeting with Gove never materialised. Nominations for the contest must be submitted on Monday, and the 313 Conservative MPs — including May — will hold the first of a series of secret ballots on June 13.

With the worst performers eliminated each time, the goal is to have two candidates left by June 20. They will then be put to a ballot of an estimated 100,000 party members. The contest should be completed by the week commencing July 22.

ATC rejects extension in physical remand of PTM MNA Dawar

ATC rejects extension in physical remand of PTM MNA Dawar
An anti-terrorism court on Friday dismissed a plea for extension in physical remand of MNA Mohsin Dawar by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).

During the hearing of the case—which is related to an attack on a security forces check-post allegedly by Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) protesters resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to five soldiers—the court directed Dawar to appear before it on June 19.

Following the hearing, Dawar was transferred to Peshawar Central jail due to security reasons on the courts orders.

Earlier, the anti-terrorism court had granted eight-day physical remand of Dawar to CTD officials in the case.

On June 4, the anti-terrorism court rejected extension in physical remand of MNA Ali Wazir, who was arrested earlier for provoking the PTM protesters along with Dawar to attack the security force’s check post. Wazir was subsequently presented before a local court in Bannu after which he was transferred to Peshawar Central jail.

Search for Indian air force plane lost near China enters fourth day

Search for Indian air force plane lost near China enters fourth day
The search for an Indian air force (IAF) plane with 13 people on board, which went missing on Monday near the border with China, entered its fourth day on Thursday, news agency ANI reported.

"The area of search has been expanded and more assets, including smaller and more maneuverable helicopters like cheetah have been included in the rescue mission so as to approach areas inaccessible by bigger helicopters or individuals on foot," said ANI quoting IAF.

"Search by IAF and Indian Army helicopters was adversely affected by localised weather in the valleys. All leads from airborne sensors including by Indian Navy being closely assessed and followed-up with search by aircraft and ground teams. The search will continue through the night."

A day earlier, Indian navy tweeted that it has deployed long-range aircraft using infra-red sensors to search dense forest. The Indian air force said on Twitter that it is using satellites to take pictures of the terrain during the day and ground teams with night-vision goggles to search by night.

The AN-32 aircraft, which is typically used for transport, took off from Assam state’s Jorhat town for Menchuka in Arunachal Pradesh state but lost contact with ground agencies at around 1pm on Monday.

“Since the aircraft did not reach the airfield, overdue action was initiated,” a government official had said earlier. “A total of eight crew and five passengers were on board.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who assumed charge of the ministry last week, had said he was in touch with senior air force officials.

Erdogan speaks to Saudi king after no-show at OIC summit

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi King Salman
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke on Thursday by phone with Saudi King Salman after missing a key summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in the Saudi holy city of Makkah, his office said.

The two exchanged greetings for the Eidul Fitr festival, Erdogan's office said, adding that they also discussed “bilateral and regional issues,” without elaborating further.

The phone call comes after Erdogan was notably absent from the Makkah summit of the OIC where the country was represented instead by Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Turkey's ties with Saudi Arabia have come under strain after the brutal murder last October of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, which tarnished the international reputation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi prosecutors have absolved the prince and said around two dozen people implicated in the murder are in custody, with death penalties sought against five men.

But attention has remained focused on whether the crown prince ordered the murder, despite the kingdom's denials.

Mitchell Starc breaks Saqlain Mushtaq's record
Australia's Mitchell Starc ripped through the West Indies batting order in the tenth match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 on Thursday, en-route to breaking a world record.

Mitchell Starc became the fastest bowler to reach 150 ODI wickets, a record previously held by Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq.

Mitchell Starc picked up five wickets against West Indies to cross the 150 milestone in just 77 matches.

Saqlain Mushtaq had claimed 150 ODI wickets in 78 matches.

In 2016, the Australian fast bowler broke Saqlain's previous record for fastest to 100 wickets, claiming his 100th wicket in just 52 matches compared to Saqlain's 53. But that record was later broken last year by Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, who got to the 100 wicket landmark in just his 44th match.

Starc has so far played 77 ODIs, taking 151 wicket with career-best figures of 6 for 28.

Rain a bigger threat than Sri Lanka as Pakistan take on their favourite World Cup opponents

Rain a bigger threat than Sri Lanka as Pakistan take on their favourite World Cup opponents
It's Pakistan's hallmark to start tournaments badly and with unexpected defeats. But it's not their hallmark to lose their way after finding it. And after the last game it seems they have finally found their feet in the English summer.

When that happens, the Greenshirts, more often than not, set themselves up for deep runs at the very least. Now in their full stride and having turned things around, Pakistan do not get pegged back. The routine setback against India doesn't count and the one that eventually knocks them out doesn't either.

Of course, there exists a type of team that puts the brakes on a resurgent Pakistan side again but with all due respect, the Sri Lankans don't fit that profile. Certainly not this Sri Lanka.

Although one of the most competitive sides in world cricket, the islanders have never really struck fear in Pakistan. Not even in world cups where the Men in Green are at times so there-for-the-taking that the opponents do not even have to try. Just ask the Windies who only had to show up and bowl legal deliveries. Pakistani batsmen did the rest.

Sri Lanka do not get such freebies against Pakistan, because as mentioned, they do not fit the profile for their finicky opponents.

The islanders do not possess tall pacers like the West Indies; they are not arch-rivals like India; they are not unbelievably good like the Australians; and they are not underdogs like Afghanistan.

Sri Lanka are a rarity in that they have managed to slip through the net of all the type of teams that can expose the vulnerabilities of Pakistan.

Not buying the narrative? How about the fact that Pakistan are 7-0 against Sri Lanka in World Cup matches. Not once have the Lankans been able to get the better of Pakistan.

Pakistan's dominance over Sri Lanka is not just limited to the 50-over world cups. When in need of World T20 title in 2009, it were Sri Lanka that got beat in the final. And when Sarfaraz Ahmed's men required a victory to stay alive in the Champions Trophy 2017, it were again the Lankans who made the sacrifice.

It absolutely won't be inaccurate to say that without Sri Lanka, Pakistan would not have had any of their three major trophies.

What makes the matters even worse for Sri Lanka is that Pakistan's remarkable record against them was made during their better days. The team's current rendition is perhaps their weakest since the late 80s/early 90s.

Just to give you an idea: their best batsman is Angelo Mathews who has two ducks in as many outings this World Cup. They still have in their ranks and rely on 35-year-old Lasith Malinga, who by his own admission has been both physically and mentally knackered from cricket.

Their strength always has been spinners. And guess what Pakistani batsmen's strength also has always been? Hint: it rhymes with "win".

The Sri Lankans, for some strange reason, also always seem to carry an unusually large number of lefties. The current line-up has four. Pakistan also always seem to possess at least a couple part-time off-spinners. The current side has two.

From top to bottom, from past to present, and from stats to subjective observations, Pakistan are just a bad stylistic match for Sri Lanka.

In fact, the greatest threat that Pakistan have in today's encounter is not by a Sri Lankan player but the biggest player sat above. If the heavens open up, of which there is a 90 per cent chance, the teams will have to share a point each, which would be a point lost for Pakistan.

Team changes

Had their position been a little secure, this would have been the ideal opponent to test a few reserves against. But Pakistan still, despite the feel-good win over England, are third from bottom. If anyone, then one of Imad Wasim and Haris Sohail could be brought in to replace Asif Ali, whose promise of late burst of boundaries may not be needed against a weak Sri Lanka side.

Sri Lanka are also coming on the back of a win but theirs was against Afghanistan and much less impressive than Pakistan's over England. Some tweaking could be done, particularly to shore up the failing batting unit.

Prediction

With all that's written above, there is no way one can back Sri Lanka here. The hosts take this one. Perhaps not too comfortably but they take it.

Shehbaz to return to Pakistan on June 8

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif would be returning to Pakistan on June 8.

According to Sharif's staff, he would be returning to the country on Saturday. The development was also tweeted by an unverified account, seemingly belonging to the PML-N supremo's son Suleman.

It is pertinent to mention here that the budget for 2019-20 is to be presented in the parliament on June 11.

Earlier, lawyers had informed an Accountability Court that Sharif would be returning to Pakistan on June 11. However, it was also earlier said in court that the opposition leader would be returning to Pakistan after Eidul Fitr.

Sharif had announced a "quick visit" to London on April 9 after his name was removed from the no-fly list on Lahore High Court orders. Party sources had said at the time that he intended to return within 10-12 days.

Sharif faces court cases regarding corruption and dishonesty. In the Ashiyana housing scam, Sharif is accused of ordering the cancellation of a contract given to successful bidder Chaudhry Latif and Sons for the low-cost housing scheme, which led to the award of the contract to Lahore Casa Developers, a proxy group of Paragon City Private Limited, resulting in a loss of Rs193 million.

In the Ramzan Sugar Mills corruption case, Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz are accused of "fraudulently and dishonestly" causing a Rs213 million loss to the national exchequer.

Australia, West Indies ready to face off on 'world record pitch'

Australia, West Indies ready to face off on 'world record pitch'
The match between Australia (title defenders) and West Indies (twice champions) has all the elements of a heavy metal contest.

The game will be played on the record pitch, as it's regularly known as after England's 481 against Australia.

It's nothing unexpected. Australia and West Indies brag substantial mounted weapons in the fast bowling division and both conveyed it generously in their opening seven-wicket victories against Afghanistan and Pakistan, separately.

West Indies destroyed Pakistan in the opening match of the tournament. Most prominent was Andre Russell's venomous three-over spell, of which 18 deliveries were short, that got two wickets and yielded only four runs.

The two-time world champions also haunted the Kiwis in a warm-up before the tournament by putting on an amazing 421 runs on the board as a target to chase.

It isn't hard to comprehend the West Indies' faith in the viability of pace. The West Indies squad has the solid potential of fast bowlers like Kemar Roach, Oshane Thomas, Andre Russell, and the skipper Jason Holder who can be essential to hustle the batsmen.

Furthermore, it was the pace that prompted England's stunning loss in their 2019 visit.

All things considered, West Indies have demonstrated that they are not a side to be played easily with. The team will look to fuel their endeavors to grab the 2019 ICC World Cup trophy.

Every element of massive destruction is there in West Indies’ team and if they strike with those elements, it could shake every one of us game long.

However, ranked fifth in the ICC ODI rankings and the team with the most number of “World Champions” title, Australia, are peaking at the right time.

The kangaroos are steadily ready to give West Indies a taste of its own medicine –bouncers –especially to keep Gayle and the company in check.

They outclassed Afghanistan in their first match of the tournament, with Warner scoring a brilliant 89*, along with his partner Aaron Finch (66) to chase 209.

Smith will be the binding agent for the team. The defending champions, Australia will have the comfort of playing five out of the first six matches against lower-ranked oppositions although no game will be an easy win.

They are the sort of team that, if they get on track and build some momentum, then they could win it all.

On paper and on the recent results, Australia and West Indies, both look formidable sides. There is enough quality in their teams to ensure they finish in the top four.

Patchy rain is expected in Nottingham. The sky will be mostly cloudy with a very little chance of any sunny spell. Moderate breeze is also expected with humid factor in the atmosphere.
