PML-Nawaz stopped from holding rally in Mandi Bahauddin

PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz
The local administration stopped Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz from holding rally in Mandi Bahauddin, following which party leader Maryam Nawaz vowed to reach the rally venue on Sunday at any cost.

According to local administration, the Quaid-e-Azam ground has been sealed as due to rains, water has accumulated on the ground.

District Police Officer said that the permission wasn’t granted due to security concerns.

A day ago, PML-N had released a video clip purportedly showing an accountability court judge allegedly admitting to a lack of evidence against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference.

The video purportedly shows the accountability court judge speaking to a PML-N worker named Nasir Butt and claiming that he was coerced to hand down the prison sentence against Nawaz Sharif despite there being no proof of corruption against the deposed premier.

Maryam alleged that the video shows the judge admitting that no evidence of embezzlement of funds in Pakistan or in Saudi Arabia was found against Hussain Nawaz Sharif.

She claimed the judge was under immense pressure to send the former prime minister to jail, and that he had contemplated committing suicide several times since.

Speaking at the press conference, Maryam termed the alleged video "divine intervention" which had arrived to help her father at a time when he had given up hopes of getting justice from the courts.

Russia economic conference: PM Imran will be Putin’s ‘special guest’

Imran Khan And Vladimir Putin
Prime Minister Imran Khan has accepted the invitation of Russia President Vladimir Putin to attend an economic conference in Vladivostok in September.

The prime minister has been invited to attend as a special guest the Eastern Economic Forum, which is scheduled to be held from September 4 to September 6 in Vladivostok, local media reported.

Last month, the premier and Putin met on the sidelines of the 19th Meeting of the Council of the Heads of State (CHS) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Bishkek. Reportedly, the invitation was extended by the Russian president during the SCO meeting.

In an interview to Russian news agency Sputnik in June following the SCO summit, Prime Minister Imran Khan said his government has been mulling the purchase of arms from Moscow, given the fact that the Cold War was long over.

“Previously Pakistan was tied to the US, and, as we all know, India was tied to the Soviet Union. And no longer is that situation there. First, we hope that our tension with India decreases, so we do not have to buy arms because we want to spend money on human development”.

“But, yes, we are looking for arms from Russia, and I know our military is already in touch with the Russian military,” Khan commented.

Regarding the prospects of Pak-Russia cooperation within the SCO, he said they look forward to having exchanges, develop more contacts and improve their trade.

“Russia is an energy-surplus country. Pakistan has shortages in energy, so we hope to talk on those areas. We already are. Apart from defence, we want to also improve our trade in other areas with Russia,” the prime minister was quoted as saying.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to attend the Eastern Economic Forum.

Maryam’s claims need forensic audit for video: Firdous Awan

Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan
Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan dismissed claims by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Saturday, saying they can only be considered authentic after a forensic audit of the video.

Her statement came in response to a video clip released by the PML-N purportedly showing an accountability court judge allegedly admitting to a lack of evidence against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference. In December, the accountability court judge had sentenced Nawaz Sharif to seven years in prison in the same corruption case.

Referring to the PML-N vice-president as "the niece", Awan said Maryam had attempted to misguide the nation after bulldozing 'her uncle'.

"A baseless story was concocted for their own vested interests to make the institutions controversial. It’s not naivety but classic hatred in politics," she added.

The PM's special assistant said that if the claims were valid, they should have been presented before the courts rather than to the media. She added that the man in the video, Nasir Butt, is a proclaimed offender.

“Butt is known for killings and heading a gang. He left Pakistan for Britain after five murders. He is known to head a gang of drug peddlers and used politics as a cover,” she said.

Mickey Arthur focuses on the positives as Pakistan narrowly miss out on semi-final spot

Head coach of Pakistan cricket team Mickey Arthur
Head coach of Pakistan cricket team Mickey Arthur was determined to accentuate the positive as he reflected on a Pakistan campaign that could have been so different.

Arthur’s team could still mathematically make the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup semi-finals heading into their final group match with Bangladesh at Lord’s.

But their mission improbable required smashing plenty of records, piling on the runs and skittling out their rivals in double-quick time.

Their 94-run victory was a fourth consecutive win with Imam Ul Haq’s 100 and Babar Azam’s 96 setting the scene for Shaheen Afridi, whose six-wicket haul, the best bowling figures of the tournament, ensured he rightly hogged the headlines.

It was a glimpse of a promising future but for this campaign at least, the fractions have not been kind.

“It’s been a World Cup of ifs and buts, a tournament of two halves and that’s disappointing,” said Arthur.

“We’ve ended very strongly and it’s nice to know we’ve beaten two of those semi-finalists (England and New Zealand), which shows we aren’t that far off as a top, top cricket team.

“The average age of our side is just 24, that’s something to be really proud about and it bodes well for the future of Pakistan cricket.

“Their work ethic, grit and passion has been a credit them. You don’t see what goes on in this dressing room, I can see their desire and their determination to improve and that means our cricket is in safe hands.

“Watch the highlights package of this World Cup and they’ll be a lot of Pakistan players on it. The guys can leave with their heads held very high.

“I’m just so passionate about this team, I want to see Pakistan get back to where they need to be.”

Closing the tournament with wins over Bangladesh, Afghanistan, New Zealand and South Africa, coupled with an earlier victory against England, Pakistan may consider themselves unlucky not to make the knockout stages, especially as they also pushed Australia close in a thriller in Taunton.

And Arthur knows the one thing he’d change.

“When you lose the first game the way we did against the West Indies, it’s really hard to get your net run rate back and that has ultimately cost us,” he added.

“I think the nerves got the better of us that day, something that won’t happen again in four years with this team. We froze but I was so proud of how we bounced back and how much we’ve learned.”

The performances of Iman, Babar and Shaheen - all making their World Cup debuts – rightly underline Arthur’s bullish optimism.

Iman, 23, scored the youngest World Cup century by a Pakistan player, Babar, 24, scored the most runs for a Pakistan player at the tournament and no-one - not even greats like Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis - boost better bowling figures than 19-year old Shaheen’s 6/35 at the ‘Home of Cricket’.

“These players are the future but they need time and they need support, but they are going to be champions,” said Arthur.

“Their performances will be up and down because that happens with young cricketers but I want to stay positive, there is no place for negativity if Pakistan cricket is to achieve its potential.”

Pakistan show promise for the future with Imam, Babar, Shaheen all impressing at Lord's

Pakistan show promise for the future with Imam, Babar and Shaheen all impressing at Lord's
Pakistan’s players impressed with bat and ball as they beat Bangladesh at Lord’s and Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik announced his retirement from ODIs after the game.

This venerable old ground has seen many a changing of the guard over the years, cricket’s ever-evolving story has seen more chapters written at Lord’s than anywhere else.

And so it was again, as Pakistan’s emerging talent gave a glimpse of the future on a day one old warrior finally called time under the shadow of Old Father Time.

Achivements of Pakistan Cricket Team

Imam Ul Haq, just 23, became the youngest Pakistan player to score an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup century with a swashbuckling show as his team recorded a confident 94-run victory over Bangladesh.

Babar Azam, fresh from his 100 against New Zealand, fell just short of three figures but his 474 runs is the best return by a Pakistan player in the 44-year history of this tournament. Not bad for a 24-year old, whose precision timing and expansive game make him a joy to watch.

And then there was Shaheen Afridi, just 19, bettering Shahid Afridi’s World Cup bowling figures record for Pakistan - taking the first six wicket haul of the tournament with a brutish display of pace and aggression that probably had the semi-finalists watching with relief he was now flying home.

No wonder former captain Shoaib Malik, who announced his retirement as Pakistan’s World Cup campaign finally came to an end, is excited about what those he leaves behind might yet achieve.

“That performance by Shaheen, that was the best bowling display I’ve ever seen,” said captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, after he’d posted figures of 6/35. “His consistency was just amazing, it was a pleasure to watch behind the stumps.

“The way the team have played in the last four games is a credit to them, even if we have not qualified.”

Afridi seemed a little embarrassed by the attention his bowling brought, though he might just have to get used to it, Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza rightly labelling him the difference between the sides.

Whatever the future for Pakistan cricket, he’s surely going to be part of the story.

“I’m so happy with performance and taking six wickets is incredible,” said Shaheen. “It means so much to have this record when you think of all the legends of Pakistan cricket. To be able to take six wickets at Lord’s is a very big moment for me and my family, it’s the Home of Cricket and a very special place.

“We’ve played such good cricket in the last four matches and it’s disappointing it’s nos over. This is my first World Cup, and the same for other players too, that is very good news for the future and four years’ time.”

Consecutive wins over Bangladesh, Afghanistan, New Zealand and South Africa, coupled with an earlier victory against England, send Pakistan home with a tinge of optimism to counter the obvious disappointment. Claiming the scalps of two of the final four is another positive to accentuate.

And they certainly board the plane a very different side to the team that had lost ten consecutive matches coming into this tournament, including 4-0 series defeat to England.

"It's very unfortunate, we played good cricket but haven't qualified,” added Sarfaraz, who has rallied his team impressively since a heavy defeat to India at Old Trafford.

“We’ve two months off now and then there is a lot of hard work to do. We’ve learned a lot and Pakistan will be stronger for this experience.”

Bilawal to launch countrywide drive 'to expose government'

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto on Friday announced a countrywide mass contact drive to "expose the government" and said the people will have to struggle for their democratic, human and economic rights.

The PPP chairman, who was addressing a press conference in Peshawar, termed the current political situation in the country "a reversal of democracy".

"We are on a reverse course. Today, people and media do not have as much freedom as they did during the tenure of the PPP," he said.

Bilawal also criticised the government for acting like an opposition.

"Who will rule when both the government and the opposition are acting like the opposition?" he asked.

He said that for the first time in the history of the country, over the last decade, a civilian government had shifted charge to another civilian government. He credited the PPP for the transition and said that it was a success [of democratic parties] that the parliament remained intact.

"Though a very weak one, but the parliamentary system is still working. It is a success of democracy."

He regretted that the country was facing hardships because individuals were being focused on instead of institutions, and because "extremism was given space in elections".

"If a free and fair election is not held, people lose hope in the democratic order and let their anger out in other forms, which are harmful to the society," he warned.

He further said that his mother, Benazir Bhutto, had struggled for 30 years to restore the 1973 Constitution in its original spirit and the PPP had managed to fulfill her vision in the shape of the 18th Constitutional Amendment.

The PPP chairman added that the amendment was now being targeted as some quarters were making efforts to reverse it. "Our selected prime minister issues statements against the 18th Amendment," he said.

The PPP will not compromise on the 1973 Constitution and the 18th Amendment, he said, adding, "You can send my entire family and the entire party to jail but our struggle will continue."

"The PPP believes that democracy is the solution of all issues," he said, adding that he believes society needs an atmosphere of political freedom.

"Our selected prime minister is unable to run the country, he cannot become a role model," he concluded.

Pakistan crash out of Cricket World Cup 2019

Pakistan crash out of Cricket World Cup 2019
Team Pakistan crashed out of the Cricket World Cup 2019 as Bangladesh restricted the team to 315 runs at Lord’s on Friday.

Sarfaraz-11 had to dismiss Bangladesh for seven runs or lower to qualify for the last semi-final spot—a next to impossible task.

But Bangladesh managed to go past the seven-run mark in the second over, eliminating Pakistan's chances of going through to the next round.

Australia, India, England and New Zealand have now qualified for the semi-finals from the 10-team group phase of the tournament.

The official Twitter account of the ICC Cricket World Cup confirmed that New Zealand had qualified for the semi-finals, knocking Pakistan out of the race for the top four and sending them home.

Earlier, Pakistan had retained a mathematical chance of joining Australia, India and England and denying New Zealand a spot. But that chance was lost when Bangladesh went past the seven-run mark in chase of Pakistan's 316-run target.

A win would still put Pakistan level with New Zealand on 11 points, but their net run-rate would be markedly inferior.

The most realistic way for Pakistan to progress out of a range of unlikely scenarios would have been to score 400 and win by 316 runs. The biggest-ever men's ODI win was by New Zealand against Ireland in 2008, when the margin was 290 runs.

Pakistan were shot out for a paltry 105 in their first match, with the West Indies winning in just 13.4 overs, meaning they took a huge hit on run rate.

They won just one of their first five matches, coming back strongly to beat South Africa, New Zealand and Afghanistan to sit fifth in the 10-team table, but in the end have left themselves too much to do.

Not every missing person attributable to the state: DG ISPR

The chairperson of the Defence of Human Rights, Amina Masood Janjua, met DG ISPR Lt-Gen Asif Ghafoor
The chairperson of the Defence of Human Rights, Amina Masood Janjua, met DG ISPR Lt-Gen Asif Ghafoor on Friday and discussed the issue of missing persons.

According to the military's media wing, the DG ISPR apprised Janjua about the efforts of the government and security forces to facilitate them and address the issue, for which a judicial commission is working day and night.

He also apprised her about special directions by Chief of Army staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa for the constitution of a special assistance cell at the Army's General Headquarters for assisting the process, the ISPR said in a press release.

"Our hearts go with the families of missing persons being Pakistanis. However, we must realise that not every person missing is attributable to the state," Lt-Gen Ghafoor said.

"Those with the state are under legal process. Still many individuals are there as part of TTP in Afghanistan and may be in other conflict zones elsewhere," he said.

"More so, there are many who got killed fighting as part of TTP against the state of Pakistan. Such individuals are also to be accounted somewhere while listing the missing persons," he stressed.

Amina Masood Janjua acknowledged the efforts by the state and security forces and thanked them for their empathy and support.

"She also reiterated the pledge that affected families shall not allow any anti-state force to exploit their emotions against the interest of Pakistan. She posed full confidence in state for getting the issue a logical closure," the ISPR added in its press statement.

CWC 2019: Pakistan team completed half century

CWC 2019: Pakistan to face Bangladesh today
Pakistan to face Bangladesh today in their final match of group stage in cricket world cup 2019.

Even if Pakistan beat Bangladesh at Lord’s on Friday, they face a near-impossible task to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals.

The top four at the end of the 10-team round-robin phase advance to the knockouts. Victory would draw Pakistan level on 11 points with fourth-placed New Zealand.

If two sides are level on points at the end of the group stage, the team with more wins goes through. But a Pakistan success would mean both they and New Zealand had won five of their nine pool matches.

The next tie-breaker is net run-rate and New Zealand have a huge advantage at +0.175 compared with Pakistan s -0.792, which is in part a consequence of Pakistan s heavy defeat by the West Indies in their opening match, when they were skittled out for just 105.

Pakistan now need to surpass the record winning margin by runs in a one-day international of 290 if they are to overtake New Zealand. But if Bangladesh win the toss and bat first, the 1992 champions slim hopes of a semi-final spot will evaporate even before a ball is bowled.

That is because net run-rate can only be boosted by so much if a team is chasing a target, and in Pakistan s case it would not be enough for them to top New Zealand.

Police Attack Case: Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar’s bail extended till July 9

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar
A local court here on Friday extended bail to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar in a case pertaining to attacking police officials on the occasion of former president Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s appearance before the NAB, till July 9.

The hearing was presided over by the Additional District and Session Judge, Jehangir Awan.

The court while accepting Nawaz’s plea to grant him one-day exemption from court appearance, extended his bail till July 9.

Khokhar was given bail against a surety bond of Rs500,000.

Police had booked more than 70 PPP workers, including Khokhar for clashing with the police officials outside the NAB headquarters where the PPP leader had appeared to record their statement in a fake bank accounts case.

The case had been registered at Secretariat police station on the complaint of the SHO under section 186, 353, 147, 149, 188, 341, 109 of the PPC.

Several police personnel were injured when PPP workers hurled stones at police personnel while trying to enter the NAB premises before the arrival of the PPP chairman and co-chairman. The charges include attack on policemen, raising slogans against institutions and causing damages.

According to the FIR, the PPP workers tried to enter the NAB building by removing the barriers despite being told by the resident magistrate about section 144 imposed in the area which prevents protests and assembly of more than five persons.

The PPP workers, however, didn’t stop and kept marching towards the NAB headquarters building and injured at least nine policemen in the clash.

CWC 2019: Pakistan won toss, select to bat against Bangladesh

Sarfaraz admits team need miracle to qualify for semi-finals

world cup 2019
Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed admitted his team need a miracle to qualify for the World Cup semi-finals as they prepare for their final league game against Bangladesh at Lord's on Friday.

Pakistan require an outlandishly big victory but if Bangladesh bat first, their chances of catching New Zealand will be gone.

“Obviously, we are here to win all the matches,” said Sarfaraz, whose team have lost their past four one-day internationals against a fast-improving Bangladesh.

“We will do our best to win the last game as well to end on a high and we will do our best to achieve that but we need to be realistic, but if Allah helps then miracles can happen,” he said.

“It's like you score 600, 500, 400 on a pitch then you think you can get the other team out for 50 and then win by a 316-run margin. If you think realistically, then we can only try.

“But the first real thing will be to win the match.”

Pakistan's highest total at the tournament is the 348-8 they made in their shock win over England. The host nation's 397-6 against Afghanistan is the best of the World Cup so far.

Sarfaraz said it had been tough to post big totals on the pitches being used in the tournament. “If you look at the tournament then, realistically, the tournament is of 280-300 totals,” said Sarfaraz.

“If you look at the pitches, they were not for free-scoring. They were tough for batting with spin and the ball was not coming onto the bat.”

Pakistan were shot out for a paltry 105 in their first match, with the West Indies winning in just 13.4 overs, meaning they took a huge hit on run rate.

They won just one of their first five matches, coming back strongly to beat South Africa, New Zealand and Afghanistan to sit fifth in the 10-team table. But England's victory against New Zealand on Wednesday left them with a virtually impossible task.

Those two teams plus Australia and India will almost certainly be the four semi-finalists.

Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz wants to end World Cup campaign on a winning note

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed
Pakistan faces an uphill task against Bangladesh on Friday if they want to qualify for the Cricket World Cup 2019 semi-finals, requiring victory with an unrealistic 316-run margin if they wish to finish among the top four.

Currently, Pakistan is struggling with their net run rate (NRR), which was dented hugely after the team's mammoth defeat against the West Indies in Nottingham at the start of their World Cup campaign.

Interestingly, Pakistan beat England and New Zealand in the league matches, but England has already sealed its berth in the semi-finals and the Kiwis are likely to edge past Pakistan on NRR.

Pakistan, if they beat Bangladesh, will tie on the points table with New Zealand, but that will not be enough for the green shirts.

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed feels things would have been different if there was a head-to-head instead of NRR criteria between the two teams to move ahead in the tournament.

"Yeah, may be," Sarfaraz responded when asked if a head-to-head criteria would have benefited the Pakistan team today.

"We have beaten England and New Zealand and they're through. But, we can't do much about it. The tournament formula is already decided and it was decided after due diligence," the Pakistan captain said.

He agreed that the defeats against West Indies and Australia haunt Pakistan.

"We lost by a big margin against West Indies which dented our NRR, and then against Australia we lost the game from a position where we could have won. I believe that if we had won that match, things would have been different for us today," the skipper said.

The wicket-keeper batsman, however, added that his side would go all-out against Bangladesh at Lord's on Friday to end the campaign on a good note.

"We will go out, we will give our best. I know the task is very unrealistic, but we will try our best and if a miracle happens, who knows," he said.

"But, we will play tomorrow's game to win and that is our priority. We want to end the campaign on a winning note," the captain said.

Replying to a question, Sarfaraz said that Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi's performance were the positive points of the tournament for Pakistan, along with comeback performances by Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Aamir.

Those in power for 35 years should be held accountable first: NAB chairman

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal
National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal on Thursday said that those who have been in power for 35 years should be held accountable first, followed by those who have been in power for a few months.

Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad, Iqbal said, “Neither does NAB believe in political revenge, nor does it want to be involved in politics. Our job is to eliminate corruption from the country. NAB as an institution is trying to take every step possible to eliminate corruption.”

Iqbal added, "Some people have tried to convince the people that NAB is taking political revenge or that NAB’s attention is focused towards one place. They have been unsuccessful."

“A certain class has been in power for 35 to 40 years and the other has been in power for just a few months. It is important to hold those accountable who have been in power for 35 years. Next, we will audit those who have been in power for a few months and hold them accountable,” he added.

Iqbal further said it does not matter if a certain class is in power or not, everyone is equal in the eyes of NAB. “NAB does not look at the face but at the case. There have been numerous cases which NAB did not pursue due to a lack of evidence. There was never a question of political revenge,” he said, adding, the accountability watchdog is not in a dispute with anyone over property.

“Why would NAB take revenge?” Iqbal said. “Our first and last priority is Pakistan.”

"Those who criticised and accused NAB of taking political revenge after coming out of the courts of after their production orders were issued, I ask them: why would NAB take revenge from you? You did not do anything to us, what was done was against the country, if anybody did anything against the country then there is no question of forgiveness from NAB. It does not matter who you are or where you are from. If you have done something you will pay for it. This is NAB’s policy and we stand by it,” Iqbal asserted.

Iqbal further said it was very easy to chant slogans about so-called political revenge or that NAB was carrying out one-sided inquiries. “If you can prove that any NAB official, including the NAB chairman, met with any senator or MNA or MPA, then I will resign from my post myself.”

“The newspapers keep saying NAB is carrying out political engineering. NAB is not doing any political engineering. It is an institution made for the elimination of corruption and we have been successful to some extent in curbing it. No one is big or small for me or NAB. Everyone is equal in the eyes of NAB. We carry out our inquiries in a very respectable manner,” he added.

Iqbal added, “Those who were riding around on motorcycles in the 80s and 90s own towers in Dubai and properties in London today. We should ask them from where did they acquire them. It is NAB’s responsibility to ask them about it.”

Speaking about the current cases under investigation, Iqbal said, “All cases under NAB investigation are there with evidence. Money laundering cases have evidence and in time we will tell how we conduct investigations. When the time comes we will present the evidence in courts, because it is not our job to hand punishment. We present evidence and the rest is up to the court.”

On the subject of no cases coming to an end, Iqbal said filing reference is NAB’s job. "1,250 cases are under way in court. We will see the logical end of these cases," he vowed.

“People need to realise what had happened is because of evidence and proof. Nothing has happened because of political revenge. This is not because of some personal vendetta,” he lamented.

"We respect the Parliament and all its members. They are the people's representatives. There were a few members against whom there are cases. They proposed amendments in the budget to cut raises in NAB employees' salaries. Some felt NAB as an institution itself should be finished. No such proposals were accepted. I want to assure that NAB is getting back more to the nation than whatever is being spent on it,” he added.

ICJ to announce decision in Kulbhushan Jadhav case on July 17

The International Court of Justice
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will announce its decision in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case on July 17, said a declaration issued on Thursday.

Jadhav currently in the custody of Pakistan’s security forces is accused of espionage in Balochistan and terrorism - both the charges are punishable by death under the law of the land.

ICJ judge Abdul Qavi Ahmed Yousuf Baig will read the decision at the Hague Palace, the entire proceeding will be live broadcasted at the ICJ's website.

Commander Jadhav — an Indian Navy officer working for Indian covert agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) — was arrested on March 3, 2016, from Balochistan after he entered into Pakistan from Iran.

Jadhav was tried in a military court which sentenced him to death for espionage and subversive activities.

In a reaction to the move, Pakistan’s relations with neighboring India tensed, and New Delhi approached the ICJ to hear the case.

On May 18, 2017, the ICJ ordered Pakistan to halt the execution of Jadhav until a final decision was made in the proceedings.

World cup: West indies won the toss and choose to bat first against Afghanistan

world cup 2019
West Indies won the toss and decided to bat first against Afghanistan in the 42nd game of the World Cup being played in Leeds on Thursday.

Afghanistan, who have so far been winless at the World Cup despite displaying flashes of brilliance, will look to end their campaign on a high.

While the Afghan spinners have lived up to their reputation with consistent performances throughout the tournament, the fast bowlers and the batting unit have failed to contribute significantly to the team’s cause.

Afghanistan will, however, be quietly confident as they take the field against West Indies — the opponents they have beaten thrice in four completed matches, including the seven-wicket triumph in the World Cup Qualifier final in Zimbabwe last year.

West Indies, much like Afghanistan have failed to produce an all-round performance, barring their opening match victory against Pakistan — their only success in this World Cup so far.

While fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell has been a star performer with the ball, the batsmen, despite some good individual performances have failed to put up a significant total due to the lack of partnerships.

But the way Nicholas Pooran shone with an excellent century against Sri Lanka three days ago, the signs are promising for the future

Gayle wants fireworks to end his world cup journey

Gayle sent a six back over Woakes and made Jofra Archer get out of the way in 36 against England.
Plenty of excellent batsmen are playing their last World Cup. Hashim Amla. Shikhar Dhawan. M.S. Dhoni. J.P. Duminy. Mohammad Hafeez. Shoaib Malik. Shaun Marsh. Shakib Al Hasan. Ross Taylor.

None, however, will be as missed as Chris Gayle.

Some of those others have more trophies, some more runs, even more wickets, and some have more match-winning knocks, but none make a stadium shake like Gayle.

When Gayle appears in his 35th and last World Cup match on Thursday in Leeds, for West Indies against Afghanistan, cricket followers won’t be watching to see him nudge the ball around to keep the fielders busy. They want to see the self-proclaimed great live up to his self-styled hype and hit sixes. Smear the bowlers to every boundary, and soaring over those, too. They want to see balls sailing into stands of dancing and singing fans.

Nobody hits sixes like Gayle. He can make it look he’s chipping from just off the green. He doesn’t even have to middle the ball with his planks of willow stamped with ‘The Boss’ on them. They still fly far.

In one of his great One-day International innings, a 42-ball 80 in 2009 at the Kensington Oval, one of his sixes went up the pavilion stairs and into the England changing room. Fetch that.

Back in Bridgetown again, against England again, in February, he launched the white ball out of the stadium five times, all of them last seen heading toward the docks. In the second match, also at the Kensington Oval, another six cleared the roof from a mere paddle sweep of Moeen Ali.

At Gros Islet, he sent a Chris Woakes delivery on to the pavilion roof. He splattered a record 39 sixes in that series, averaged 106, and ensured he was coming to England for a fifth World Cup.

To hit 39 at age 39 made him happy, and not surprised. Hitting sixes, he said at the time: “Just comes naturally.”

“If it’s one thing about me, my mindset is that even when I’m 60 I still think I can do it. I feel that when I reach age 60, I can still go up against the best bowlers in the world and still score runs. That’s how I feel. That mindset will never change; it’s just the body that is the worrying part for me.”

In the history of ODIs, only the retired Shahid Afridi has more sixes, 351 to Gayle’s 326. Then again, Afridi played 101 more matches, and he didn’t face the new ball and fresh bowlers like Gayle has. Nobody else active is even close to them. Rohit Sharma has 230 sixes, Eoin Morgan 211, Jos Buttler 125.

Gayle has a dozen sixes at this World Cup, his second best tally. He hit 16 alone in one match at the 2015 World Cup, in a then-record 215 score against Zimbabwe in Canberra.

He started here in style with consecutive sixes back over pacer Hasan Ali’s head in a 34-ball 50 against Pakistan.

Gayle was unlucky against Australia, being limited to 21 runs. He creamed Pat Cummins for three consecutive boundaries, then was lbw to Mitchell Starc. But it should have been a free hit. Starc no-balled the delivery beforehand but it was missed.

Gayle sent a six back over Woakes and made Jofra Archer get out of the way in 36 against England.

Bangladesh gave him the second duck of his World Cup career, 16 years after it gave him the first.

Then there was the New Zealand game at Old Trafford. He flicked consecutive sixes off Matt Henry, was dropped three times, then lashed consecutive sixes off Mitchell Santner 20 rows up into the stands. The party ended, until Carlos Brathwaite came alive, when Gayle was out trying to hit another six but top-edged a slower ball.

He added a couple more sixes in 35 against Sri Lanka, but this World Cup hasn’t been vintage for him. Gayle has looked all of his 39½ years on the slow, sticky pitches of England. The grey flecks in his dreadlocks and beard have looked greyer while he has dealt with back and groin issues. His showmanship while fielding has appeared to try and hide his inability to expertly cover his patch of grass.

West Indies accepted his cautious starts long ago, rightly believing he can quickly make up for the string of dot balls with power shots. He often appears rooted to the crease, hardly moving his feet, and yet the ball still finds itself buried in excited crowds. Two half-centuries in seven innings show he hasn’t quite clicked like the rest of the batting line-up.

To hear his coaches and team-mates, it doesn’t affect him. He accepts his time is nearly up but lives in the present, sure he can smother any bowler. He’s proud of his achievements this year passing 10,000 ODI runs, and 1,000 in World Cups and wants to make the crowd happy.

The likes of captain Jason Holder, Evin Lewis, and Nicholas Pooran have praised his willingness to pass on advice, and the depth of it. They say his relaxed demeanor calms nerves in the changing room.

Venus Williams, who also happens to be 39, once said the joy of winning is fleeting, but addictive. She added she wouldn’t forgive herself if she quit playing tennis while she had more left in her.

Back in February, Gayle said the ODI series against England was his last at home, and this World Cup would be his ODI swansong. But last week he changed his mind. He wants to play the three ODIs when India tour in August, and maybe a Test match for the first time in five years. The second and last Test just happens to be in his Kingston hometown.

Gayle can barely walk. But he can definitely still hit

ECP Adjourned Petition Against Maryam Nawaz Till Aug 01

ECP Adjourned Petition Against Maryam Nawaz Till Aug 01
Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has adjourned hearing on petition against the appointment of Maryam Nawaz as vice president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) till August 01.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza held hearing on the petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Islamabad.

Lawyer Jahangir Jadoon and Barrister Zafarullah appeared before ECP on behalf of Maryam Nawaz whereas complainant’s lawyer failed to appear due to clash of schedule.

Barrister Zafarullah, while presenting his arguments, claimed that the is no constutuional clause in existence which seconds barring of Maryam nawaz from becoming vice president of the party.

Earlier on June 25, Maryam Nawaz, in a written reply to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), stated that there is no restriction in the Consitution and the Election Act barring a convicted individual from holding a party post. The reply further stated that “such laws were made during dictatorships to bar the nomination of the public representatives”.

“There was a clause in Political Parties Order 2002, according to which a sentenced man cannot hold a party position. The parliament had abolished this clause in Election Act 2017,” she added.

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) member asked about the submission of appointment notification in the commission over which, the lawyer said that the plaintiff has only pasted newspaper cuttings in the petition. The hearing has been adjourned till July 4.

It is to be noted that the petition against Maryam was filed by PTI MNAs Maleeka Bukhari, Farrukh Habib and Javeria Zafar on May 9. PTI adopted the stance that Maryam Nawaz was ineligible to hold any political or public office as she was sentenced by the court in a corruption reference.

Appointment of ex-PM Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam as party vice president was contradictory to the constitution and law, the plea stated.

CWC 2019: England Win Toss, Opt to Bat against New Zealand

England To Face New Zealand today
England won the toss and opted to bat first against New Zealand in the 41st match of the ICC World Cup 2019 at The Riverside Cricket Ground in Chester-le-street.

New Zealand, who are are one point above England and are sitting in third place, have suffered back-to-back setbacks against Pakistan and Australia.

Interestingly, even a defeat would not spell the end of either team’s chances of emerging as one of the top four.

If England lose today against the Black Caps in Chester-le-Street, Pakistan could bounce over them into the top four with victory over Bangladesh.

After beating the Tigers, Pakistan can draw level with New Zealand in the event if the Black Caps lose against England on Wednesday.

With Pakistan well behind on net run-rate, it would take a big New Zealand loss allied to a commanding Sarfraz XI victory over Bangladesh to deny the Black Caps a place in the last four.

England:

Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.
