Bangladesh beats Afghanistan by 4 wickets, Shakib smacked unbeaten half-century

Bangladesh beats Afghanistan by 4 wickets, Shakib smacked unbeaten half-century
Shakib Al Hasan smacked an unbeaten half-century as Bangladesh ended their four-match losing streak to Afghanistan in Twenty20 internationals with a four-wicket win in their final league match of the tri-nation tournament in Chittagong on Saturday.

Shakib hit an unbeaten 70 off 45 balls to guide Bangladesh to 139-6 in 19 overs after young off-spinner Afif Hossain led the bowling effort with 2-9, helping the home side restrict Afghanistan to 138-7 in 20 overs.

In pursuit of a modest target, Bangladesh wobbled at the start as openers Liton Das (four) and Najmul Hossain (five) both fell cheaply before Shakib put on 58 runs with Mushfiqur Rahim to steady the innings.

Mushfiqur made 26 off 25 balls, but not before he was dropped by substitute fielder Najib Tarakai off Mohammad Nabi on 14.

Medium pacer Karim Janat dismissed Mushfiqur in the 11th over before a floodlight disruption enabled Afghanistan´s bowlers to regroup.

Rashid Khan struck twice after the delay and debutant Naveen-ul-Haq also claimed a wicket as Bangladesh lost Mahmudullah (six), Sabbir Rahman (one) and Afif (two) in quick succession to slide to 104-6.

Mosaddek Hossain cut Rashid late for a brilliant boundary to ease some pressure on the home side before Shakib struck the Afghanistan skipper for a four and six in consecutive balls to take Bangladesh close.

"If you look at the last few months, we haven´t been up to the mark in T20s. We´re working on it. The bowlers bowled well on the wicket," Shakib said after the match.

"We needed someone to bat through the innings. And luckily today it was my day," he said.

Mosaddek, who was unbeaten on 19, chipped Naveen at mid-on for two runs in the last ball of the penultimate over to complete only Bangladesh´s second T20 win against Afghanistan.

Earlier, Afif swung the momentum Bangladesh´s way with his double strike in the 10th over of Afghanistan´s innings after Hazratullah Zazai made 47 runs off 35 balls, putting on 75 runs with Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the opening stand.

A wicket apiece for Mohammad Saifuddin, Shafiul Islam, Shakib and Mustafizur Rahman left Afghanistan in disarray before Shafiqullah´s 23 off 17 balls gave them a glimmer of hope.

Afghanistan and Bangladesh had already qualified for Tuesday´s final in Dhaka after winning two of their previous three matches in a competition that also featured Zimbabwe.

"Best things are that it´s happened in the group stages. We have to restart and do the basics right for the final," Rashid said.

Yemen’s Houthis announce plan to conditionally halt strikes against Saudi Arabia

The Ansarullah’s president of the Supreme Political Council in the Yemeni capital, Sana'a, Mahdi al-Mashat,
Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement says it will stop launching retaliatory missile and drone attacks against positions inside Saudi Arabia if the Saudi-led military coalition, which has been pounding impoverished Yemen for the past several years, reciprocates the initiative in kind.

The Ansarullah’s president of the Supreme Political Council in the Yemeni capital, Sana'a, Mahdi al-Mashat, made the announcement on Friday.

“We are announcing that we will stop targeting Saudi territories with drones and ballistic missiles and all kinds of targeting, and we will wait for the favor to be returned with a similar or even better one by (Saudi Arabia) announcing a halt to all sorts of air strikes against Yemeni territories,” Yemen’s Arabic-language al-Masirah television network quoted him as saying.

Mashat’s comments came almost a week after Houthi fighters conducted drone and missile strikes on two of Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities, in Abqaiq and Khurais. The attacks led to a halt in about 50 percent of the Arab kingdom’s crude and gas production, causing a surge in oil prices.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing Yemen’s former regime back to power and crushing the Houthi movement, which significantly helping the Yemeni army in defending the country against invaders.

The Houthi top official also called for serious negotiations to be held among all parties involved in the persisting conflict.

“I call on all parties from different sides of the war to engage seriously in genuine negotiations that can lead to a comprehensive national reconciliation that does not exclude anyone,” Mashat said, while boasting the Houthi movement’s rapidly improved military capabilities and “significant advancement” in air and missile defense.

He also warned that that the Houthis “would not hesitate to launch a period of great pain” if their call for peace was ignored.

The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the war has claimed more than 91,000 lives over the past four and a half years.

The war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN says over 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including 10 million suffering from extreme levels of hunger.

The Houthis publicly took credit for the September 14 attacks against Saudi oil facilities, but the US swiftly blamed Iran.

Tensions have significantly risen as a result of the accusations leveled against Iran, which Tehran has rejected, and there has been speculation that the US may take military or other forms of action against Iran or Iranian interests.

US sending more troops to Gulf, Trump announces Iran sanctions

President Donald Trump
The United States announced Friday that it was sending military reinforcements to the Gulf region following attacks on Saudi oil facilities that it attributes to Iran, just hours after President Donald Trump ordered new sanctions on Tehran.

Trump said the sanctions were the toughest-ever against another country, but indicated he did not plan a military strike, calling restraint a sign of strength.

The Treasury Department renewed action against Iran's central bank after US officials said Tehran carried out weekend attacks on rival Saudi Arabia's oil infrastructure, which triggered a spike in global crude prices.

Those attacks, combined with an Iranian attack on an American spy drone in June, represented a "dramatic escalation of Iranian aggression," Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said.

The Pentagon chief announced that the United States would send military reinforcements to the Gulf region at the request of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

"In response to the kingdom's request, the president has approved the deployment of US forces, which will be defensive in nature, and primarily focused on air and missile defence," Esper said.

However Joint Chiefs of Staff Joe Dunford categorised the deployment as "moderate," with the number of troops not expected to reach the thousands.

Earlier in the day Trump attacked both critics who thought the mogul-turned-president would trigger war and hawks seeking a military response.

"The easiest thing I could do (is) knock out 15 different major things in Iran," Trump said.

"But I think the strong-person approach and the thing that does show strength would be showing a little bit of restraint," he said.

Trump in June authorized a military strike after Iran shot down the US spy drone, only to call it off at the last moment.

Extensive damage

Saudi Arabia on Friday revealed extensive damage from the strikes on state giant Aramco's facilities in Khurais and the world's largest oil processing facility at Abqaiq.

The attacks, which knocked out half of Saudi Arabia's oil production, have been claimed by Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels, but Washington has pointed its finger at Tehran, condemning the strikes as an "act of war."

Abqaiq was struck 18 times while nearby Khurais was hit four times in a raid that triggered multiple explosions and towering flames that took hours to extinguish, Aramco officials said.

Aramco flew dozens of international journalists to the two sites to show it was speeding up repairs, giving rare access to the nerve centre of the world's largest oil producer as it seeks to shore up investor confidence ahead of a planned initial public offering (IPO).

Meanwhile, Yemen's Huthi rebels, who have repeatedly targeted key Saudi infrastructure in recent months in cross-border attacks, unexpectedly announced late Friday that they planned to halt all strikes on the country.

The move, they said, was part of a peace initiative to end their country's devastating conflict which has killed tens of thousands of people — most of them civilians — and driven millions more to the brink of famine.

Iran denies US and Saudi accusations that it arms the Huthis.

New ground for sanctions

The United States already maintains sweeping sanctions on Iran including on its central bank, with anyone who deals with it subject to prosecution, due to Tehran's alleged nuclear program.

But the new sanctions Friday were imposed for the additional reason of "terrorism," Treasury said, adding that Iran's central bank had provided "billions of dollars" to two groups blacklisted by the United States.

"Treasury's action targets a crucial funding mechanism that the Iranian regime uses to support its terrorist network, including the Qods Force, Hezbollah and other militants that spread terror and destabilise the region," US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

The Qods Force conducts international operations for Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, while Hezbollah and political party in Lebanon, is among Iran's closest regional partners.

Iran responded that the move showed that the United States was running out of options.

The United States also imposed sanctions on Iran's sovereign wealth fund, whose board of trustees includes President Hassan Rouhani, as well as Etemad Tejarate Pars, a company that the Treasury Department said had sent money internationally on behalf of Iran's defence ministry.

Trump recently said that he hopes for talks with Rouhani, who responded that Trump must first ease sanctions.

Last year Trump pulled out of a nuclear accord with Iran negotiated under former president Barack Obama, sending tensions soaring as he tried to stop all countries from buying Iran's oil.

Pakistan squad announced for Sri Lanka ODI series

Pakistan squad announced for Sri Lanka ODI series
The Pakistan Cricket Board on Saturday announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

Abid Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan and Usman Shinwari earned recalls to the team while Hasan Ali missed out his place in the side due to a back spasm.

Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmed Shahzad and Umar Akmal also miss out.

The squad for the three T20Is against Sri Lanka in Lahore will be announced during the one-day series. Until then, the other players in the probables camp will continue to train at the NCA.

Addressing a press conference Head Coach and Chief Selector Misbah-ul-Haq said, “After thorough discussions with the members of the selection committee and meticulous planning, I feel we have put together the best possible squad."

He added, “These are the only 50-over matches we play this season and we want to make their optimum use. Over the course of my cricketing career, I have realised there are no easy games and there are no easy opponents in cricket."

Misbah added a season-opening series is crucial for setting the tone. "It is extremely important that we produce solid performances and have favourable results as it will build the confidence of our players and help in carrying the momentum Down Under," he noted.

“The five boys, who have been recalled, were straightforward selections. Iftikhar Ahmed is a batsman who can also bowl off-spin and provides the captain with necessary bowling depth as Sri Lanka boasts a few left-handers in their ranks. Mohammad Nawaz has been performing well in domestic matches. Despite their strong performances, Mohammad Rizwan, Usman Shinwari and Abid Ali were unlucky to miss out the World Cup squad," he said.

“This is, however, a perfect opportunity for these players to prove their mettle in international cricket and cement their place in the one-day side,” Misbah added.

Sri Lanka will tour Pakistan to play three ODIs and three T20I matches from September 27 to October 9.

ODI squad

Sarfaraz Ahmed (captain), Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, Abdi Ali, Asif Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Usman Shinwari, Haris Sohail, Muhammad Hasnain, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Nawaz, Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Rizwan

Sheikh Rashid hints at secret deal despite PM's denial on NRO

federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed
Despite Prime Minister Imran Khan denying any concession under the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed hinted on Saturday that a deal is in the works for the under-arrest politicians.

The federal minister was addressing media, where he said that people should believe his words about the issue being under consideration.

“Has anyone heard since the last two months that Nawaz Sharif is unwell or he wants to go abroad?”, said the minister.

He said that former prime minister Nawaz Sharif makes matters worse by being obstinate while his brother Shehbaz Sharif is flexible.

Rashid said that Shehbaz Sharif is willing to have talks.

He further said that those ‘making calls from London’ can be brought here as well, adding that the matter is in discussion.

Apparently mocking Pakistan People’s Party leader Asif Ali Zardari, the federal minister said that talks are also being held with the former president and his aides are returning money.

Last week, PM Imran reiterated his stance of ‘no deal, no compromise’, saying that the process of accountability will continue against the corrupt elements.

Iran issues 'battlefield' warning as US deploys troops

Iran issues 'battlefield' warning as US deploys troops
Any country that attacks Iran will become the “main battlefield”, the Revolutionary Guards warned on Saturday after Washington ordered reinforcements to the Gulf following attacks on Saudi oil installations it blames on Tehran.

Tensions escalated between arch-foes Iran and the United States after last weekend's attacks on Saudi energy giant Aramco's Abqaiq processing plant and Khurais oilfield halved the kingdom's oil output.

Yemen's Huthi rebels have claimed responsibility for the strikes but the US says it has concluded the attacks involved cruise missiles from Iran and amounted to “an act of war”.

Washington approved the deployment of troops to Saudi Arabia at “the kingdom's request,” US Defence Secretary Mark Esper said, noting the forces would be “defensive in nature” and focused on air and missile defence.

But Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Major General Hossein Salami said Iran was “ready for any type of scenario”.

“Whoever wants their land to become the main battlefield, go ahead,” he told a news conference in Tehran.

“We will never allow any war to encroach upon Iran's territory."

“We hope that they don't make a strategic mistake”, he said, listing past US military “adventures” against Iran.

Salami was speaking at Tehran's Islamic Revolution and Holy Defence museum during the unveiling of an exhibition of what Iran says are US and other drones captured in its territory.

It featured a badly damaged drone with US military markings said to be an RQ-4 Global Hawk that Iran downed in June, as well as an RQ-170 Sentinel captured in 2011 and still intact.

The Guards also displayed the domestically manufactured Khordad 3 air defence battery they say was used to shoot down the Global Hawk.

“What are your drones doing in our airspace? We will shoot them down, shoot anything that encroaches on our airspace,” said Salami, noting Iran had defeated “America's technological dominance” in air defence and drone manufacture.

His remarks came only days after strikes on Saudi oil facilities claimed by Yemen's Huthis, but the US says it has concluded the attack involved cruise missiles from Iran and amounted to “an act of war”.

Saudi Arabia, which has been bogged down in a five-year war across its southern border in Yemen, has said Iran “unquestionably sponsored” the attacks.

The kingdom says the weapons used in the attacks were Iranian-made, but it stopped short of directly blaming its regional rival.

“Sometimes they talk of military options,” Salami said, apparently referring to the Americans. Yet he warned that “a limited aggression will not remain limited” as Iran was determined to respond and would “not rest until the aggressor's collapse.”

The Guards' aerospace commander said the US ought to learn from its past failures and abandon its hostile rhetoric.

“We've stood tall for the past 40 years and if the enemy makes a mistake, it will certainly receive a crushing response,” Brigadier General Amirali Hajizadeh said.

The US upped the ante on Friday by announcing new sanctions against Iran's central bank, with US President Donald Trump calling the measures the toughest America has ever imposed on another country.

Modi faces lawsuit in US over human rights abuses in Kashmir

Modi faces lawsuit in US over human rights abuses in Kashmir
A US court on Thursday issued summons against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for committing human rights violations in occupied Kashmir.

According to the Houstan Chronicle, summons were also issued against Home Affairs Minister Amit Shah and Commander of Indian Armed forces Lieutenant General Kanwal Jeet Singh Commander.

The lawsuit filed by two Kashmiri citizens alleges Modi, Shah and commander of the Indian army, Lt General Dhillon, carried out extrajudicial killings, committed wrongful death, battery, emotional distress, crimes against humanity and inflicted “cruel, inhuman, degrading treatment or punishment” upon Kashmiris during the military exercise. They say Modi and his henchmen have created a public nuisance and are guilty of negligence by not preventing the “deliberate, willful, wanton, malicious, intentional and/or oppressive” killings of Muslims in the regions of Jamuu and Kashmir.

The civil complaint accuses Modi of human rights violations under The Torture Victim Protection Act of 1991, a federal statute that allows civil suits on US soil against foreign officials suspected of committing torture or extrajudicial killing.

“We want to hold a human rights violator like Modi accountable,” said Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, whose a member of the group focused on the right to self-determination campaign for the state of Punjab.

Pannu added, “He can only escape if he has been granted immunity by the US Department of State,” Pannu said. “Otherwise, the facts and the law are on the side of the victim.”

The US State Department typically intervenes in such cases to ask the judge to grant officials immunity from civil lawsuits.

Pannu said he is working with process servers to deliver Modi the court summons before he leaves the “Howdy Modi” event at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sunday.

Modi is expected to be joined by President Donald Trump at the massive gathering of Indian-Americans in Houston, in a symbolic show of the bond between the two leaders and countries.

The September 22 rally — dubbed, with a touch of Texan twang, "Howdy, Modi!" — will mark a rare joint appearance between a US president and a foreign leader before an ethnic community and be the pair's third meeting this year.

Canada's PM apologises again for wearing blackface as new images emerge

Canada's PM apologises again for wearing blackface as new images emerge
A contrite Justin Trudeau publicly apologised on Thursday for his “absolutely unacceptable” behaviour, as decades-old images showing the Canadian prime minister in blackface makeup rocked his re-election campaign.

Trudeau, 47, was already under fire for an ethics lapse and other controversies, so the resurfacing of photos and videos of him engaging in activities he himself termed “racist” dealt a fresh blow to his chances.

“I recognise that it is something absolutely unacceptable to do,” Trudeau, who heads the Liberal Party, told a news conference during a campaign stop in Winnipeg.
Darkening your face, regardless of the context or the circumstances, is always unacceptable because of the racist history of blackface,” he said. “I should have understood that then and I never should have done it.”

“The fact is that I didn't understand how hurtful this is to people who live with discrimination every single day. I have always acknowledged that I come from a place of privilege, but I now need to acknowledge that comes with a massive blind spot.”

“And for that I am deeply sorry, and I apologise.”
Earlier, broadcaster Global News released damning images of Trudeau in ripped jeans and a t-shirt, his arms up and wearing blackface makeup, which his campaign confirmed to AFP were taken “in the early 1990s”.

This followed Time magazine's publishing on Wednesday of a photograph of him in dark makeup at an “Arabian Nights”-themed party 18 years ago.

The son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau, who is considered the father of modern Canada, also admitted this week to wearing similar makeup in his teens when he sang Harry Belafonte's 1956 hit “Banana Boat Song (Day-O)” at a high school talent contest.

He acknowledged that these actions were “racist” and that his enthusiasm for costumes — which has also included dressing up as comic book hero Clark Kent/Superman and a “Star Wars” rebel pilot for Halloween —- has not always been “appropriate”.

Trudeau and the Liberals won a landslide victory in 2015, but are this year in a tight contest against the Conservatives led by Andrew Scheer.

Despite the political furore, Trudeau pressed on Thursday with campaign stops in Winnipeg and Saskatoon, ahead of the October 21 election.

Firdous Ashiq asks Maulana Fazl Rehman to march in support of Kashmir

Firdous Ashiq asks Maulana Fazl Rehman to march in support of Kashmir
Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan on Friday urged Jamiat Ulema-e Islam (F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rahman to march for the freedom of Kashmiris, not for those who have looted and plundered national wealth.

In a post on Twitter, Awan said, Fazl considered the present democratic system as bogus because he was not part of it.

She added, Fazl claimed to be a champion of democracy but now he was trying to topple the system. "Where all his principles have gone?", she questioned.

Dr Awan further said the JUI-F chief was more interested in the chairmanship of Kashmir committee than to highlight the plight of Kashmiris.

She urged him not to lock down Islamabad for the sake of a house in ministers' enclave.

Awan added that instead of giving advice to others, he should ask his son to tender resignation from National Assembly's membership. "It is strange that Maulana Fazlur Rahman considered the parliament as bogus but the salary and perks of his son as MNA were justified for him," she added.

Sri Lanka Cricket Board gives go ahead with Pakistan tour

Sri Lanka Cricket Board gives go ahead with Pakistan tour
Sri Lanka's cricket board Thursday said it will go ahead with its tour of Pakistan.

Sri Lanka Cricket Secretary Mohan de Silva said they received the all-clear from the defence ministry to leave for Pakistan on Tuesday.

"We have the green light from the defence ministry," de Silva told AFP.

"The tour is on as we planned. I myself and our office bearers will also be accompanying the team."

Reports last week of a possible terror attack were referred to the defence ministry for investigation.

The Sri Lanka team was the target of an attack during a Test match in Pakistan's Lahore in March 2009, with six players injured when gunmen attacked their bus.

Since the attack, a majority of international teams have refused to tour the South Asian country.

Sri Lanka's first match in Lahore after that was one T20 game against Pakistan in October 2017.

De Silva visited Pakistan last month along with a security consultant to check out the arrangements made by the hosts.

"They have promised security reserved for a head of state," de Silva said.

The six-match tour, due to start on September 27, was put on hold last week after the Sri Lanka prime minister's office warned the board it had unspecified information about a possible attack against its players.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said it was not aware of any information relating to the safety of the Sri Lankan team, but reiterated its commitment to providing security.

Ten senior players opted out of the tour citing security concerns.

Sri Lanka has already announced two squads for the three one-day internationals and the three T20 matches.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka are scheduled to play three ODI matches at Karachi’s National Stadium on September 27, 29 and October 2. Three T20Is will take place at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on October 5, 7 and 9.

Sri Lanka will host Pakistan for two World Test Championships in late December.

At least 30 civilians killed in air strike near pine nut field in eastern Afghanistan

At least 30 civilians killed in air strike near pine nut field in eastern Afghanistan
At least 30 civilians were killed and 40 injured in an air strike conducted by the Afghan security forces, backed by US air support, in eastern Afghanistan, officials said on Thursday.

The attack on Wednesday night was aimed at destroying a hideout used by Daesh militants, but it accidentally targeted farmers near a field in Wazir Tangi area of Khogyani district in Nangarhar province, three government officials told Reuters.

Sohrab Qaderi, a provincial council member in eastern Nangarhar province, said a drone strike killed 30 workers in a pine nut field and at least 40 others were injured.

The defense ministry in Kabul confirmed the strike conducted by Afghan and US forces was aimed at fighters belonging to the IS, but refused to share details of civilians casualty caused by the attack.

Attaullah Khogyani, a spokesman for the provincial governor of Nangarhar, confirmed the air strike.

“The government is investigating the incident, so far nine bodies were collected from the attack site near a pine nut field.”

US forces in Kabul were not immediately available for a comment.

Malik Rahat Gul, a tribal elder in Wazir Tangi said the air strike happened at a time when tired workers, mainly daily wage earners, had gathered near their tent after harvesting pine nuts in a field nearby.

“The workers had lit a bonfire and were sitting together when a drone targeted them,” said Gul.

Earlier in May, US air strikes killed 17 policemen by mistake during a battle with insurgents in the country’s southern Helmand province.

In the last year, the number of US air strikes has risen, most often in response to Afghan requests for assistance, but also in an intensified campaign against the militant Islamic State group, who are mostly headquartered in eastern Afghanistan.

A higher frequency of US air strikes has led to more civilian deaths, according to UN reports. A quarterly estimate by the UN issued recently said more civilians were killed by Afghan and US forces than by insurgents in the first months of 2019.

US once again shows sanctions aimed at Iranian people: Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has condemned a decision by US President Donald Trump to tighten economic pressure against Tehran, saying Washington once again proved that it deliberately seeks to target ordinary people.

Zarif said in a tweet on Wednesday that Trump's decision was meant to escalate the economic war against Tehran regardless of its consequences.

"It’s admission that US is DELIBERATELY targeting ordinary citizens: #EconomicTerrorism, illegal & inhuman," he said.

Earlier in the day, Trump said he had ordered Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to “substantially” increase economic sanctions.

“I have just instructed the Secretary of the Treasury to substantially increase Sanctions on the country of Iran!” Trump tweeted, without providing more details.

The announcement came in the aftermath of attacks on two Saudi Aramco oil facilities on Saturday, which knocked out more than half the kingdom’s production.

While Yemen's Houthi Ansarullah movement has claimed responsibility for the attack, the United States and Saudi Arabia insist that Iran is responsible for the strike.

US Vice President Mike Pence said Tuesday that it “looks like” Iran was responsible but investigations were still ongoing.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was headed to Riyadh on Wednesday to discuss the matter with Saudi officials, has also put the blame on Iran, claiming, “Tehran is behind nearly 100 attacks on Saudi Arabia” and that “there is no evidence the attacks came from Yemen.”

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper has said that the US military was preparing a response to the attacks.

Tehran, however, has dismissed the allegation, calling it an attempt by Washington to shift from a failed campaign of “maximum pressure” to one of “maximum lying” and “deceit” against the Islamic Republic.

Zarif said after the attack in tweet that “US & its clients are stuck in Yemen because of illusion that weapon superiority will lead to military victory.”

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Zarif said that America's campaign of pressure against Tehran has failed and Washington should rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal if it wants a seat at the negotiating table with Iran.

"The united States has shown by now that it holds no value for any agreements and even its own signature," he said. "Today it decides to invite a group to the White House, tomorrow it calls off the meeting or sanctions the same group."

He also accused Washington and Riyadh of deliberately trying to change the realities on the ground in the region by making false accusations against Iran.

"They are now witnessing a situation where their advanced defense systems can't intercept Yemeni missiles and drones and to hide their shame they level accusations against others," Zarif continued.

Meanwhile, Russia also slammed as "destructive" and "pointless" Trump's decision to step up economic pressure against Iran.

Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday condemned Trump's announcement to "substantially increase" sanctions on Iran.

The ministry warned that sanctions would solve nothing because Iran would not feel the impact as it has long been under unilateral sanctions by Washington and some of its allies.

The statement added that the sanctions, while unhelpful, were still a better alternative to military solution, which has been touted several time by some American officials.

Agreement would enable the CNG sale at least 30 per cent cheaper than petrol price: Mr Paracha

ExxonMobil, the world’s largest publicly traded oil and gas firm
ExxonMobil, the world’s largest publicly traded oil and gas firm, on Wednesday signed an agreement with Universal Gas Distribution Company (UGDC) to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the country’s transport sector.

“After the agreement, the first shipment of LNG is expected by the next month which will change the entire gas landscape in Pakistan,” said a statement issued by Petroleum Division of the Ministry of Energy.

The agreement was signed in Houston, Texas by Vice President of ExxonMobil Richard Rayfield and Chief Executive of UGDC Ghiyas Abdullah Paracha and witnessed by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar. A large entourage of the government is currently in the United States to attend an annual LNG conference.

Mr Paracha said the agreement initially covered four cargoes in the first year that would gradually increase overtime depending on revival of the CNG sector. He said the first cargo was being arranged for end-October for which legal framework was already in place and the prime minister had strongly focused on the Ease of Doing Business to revive investor confidence.

He said the agreement would enable the CNG sale at least 30 per cent cheaper than petrol price. “Based on this price differential, we are hopeful that two million fresh vehicles would convert to CNG in two years,” he said, adding this would result in an import bill saving of about $1bn a year.

The Petroleum Division said the agreement would “for the first time result in the import of private LNG to the country” and “the first shipment of LNG expected by the next month will change the entire gas landscape in Pakistan”.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar, Chairman LNG Market Development Alex Volkov, President Market Development ExxonMobil, Irtiza Sayyed, Country Manager Pakistan ExxonMobil Shahrukh Mirza, senior officials of the petroleum ministry and UGDC were also present on the occasion.

Speaking at the event, Babar said that this was a historic moment as ExxonMobil had decided to invest in Pakistan after a gap of 20 years. He said the businesses would be provided enabling environment according to the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

He said the deal was an honour for Pakistan and the government will promote ease of doing business to facilitate investment in all the sectors including the energy sector.

He said the government wanted to put itself out of the gas import and this deal was the first step in that direction. Investment by ExxonMobil will also propel other energy companies to invest in Pakistan which will bring down the price of gas to help masses and the environment, he added.

Alex Volkov and Irtiza Sayyed said their company had decided to invest in Pakistan after two decades with a vision to provide economical and environmentally friendly gas to consumers on a regular basis. “We will support UGDC so that it can overcome the shortage of gas in Pakistan,” Volkov was quoted as saying.

Ghiyas Paracha said the government had changed third party rules to allow the private sector to import gas that would help the CNG sector to buy surplus gas from terminals and also buy the fuel from five upcoming terminals which will revive the CNG sector.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to win a ruling majority in an election that produced a virtual tie between his right-wing bloc and a center-left grouping that would be led by former military chief Benny Gantz.

With Israeli media reporting more than 90 percent of votes counted in Tuesday’s election, the bloc led by Netanyahu’s Likud party was more or less even with a likely grouping headed by Gantz’s centrist Blue and hite party.

A Likud-led bloc looked poised to control 55 of parliament’s 120 seats, with 56 going to a center-left alliance, numbers falling short of a majority government of 61 lawmakers.

A Likud spokesman said the leaders of right-wing factions met Netanyahu at the prime minister’s office on Wednesday and pledged to work with him to form the next government.

COAS General Bajwa meets boxer Muhammad Waseem
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa met Pakistani boxer Muhammad Waseem in Rawalpindi on Wednesday. COAS Gen Bajwa assured the boxer of full support for his boxing engagements.

Waseem, 32, is Pakistan’s most prominent pugilist and had an unbeaten record until he copped his first defeat against South Africa’s Moruti Mthalane last year.

The trajectory of Chaman-born’s career, however, has been bogged by financial issues. Last week, he knocked out a Filipino opponent in record time during a professional bout.

"COAS met boxer Muhammad Waseem at his office. Congratulated him for the recent achievement bringing honour for the country. Talent like you is our pride, we are here to support youngsters like you having potential and positive energy, COAS," tweeted the DG ISPR.

Earlier in September, star boxer Muhammad Waseem had returned to winning in spectacular style by knocking out his Filipino opponent Conrado within 82 seconds of the opening round of a match.

By doing so, Waseem, who had suffered the sole defeat of his pro career last year in a world title bout, bounced back and improved his professional boxing record to 9-0 ( KOs).

What makes Waseem’s victory even more impressive is that he floored Tanamor with a barrage of left hooks and body shots. The victory was his first fight since last year's title bout, which he lost on points.

Anyone who entered Kashmir will be an enemy of Kashmiris: PM Khan

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said that anyone who entered Kashmir will be the enemy of Pakistan and Kashmiris.

Addressing a press conference after inaugurating the 24/7 service at the Pak-Afghan Torkham border, he said that with the opening of the border, increasing trade will provide employment opportunities and the area will prosper.

The prime minister said that peace in Afghanistan will change the whole region as it will trigger greater trade activity up to the Central Asian States. He said this will also generate immense job opportunities for our people.

To a question, Imran Khan said that the democracy do not flourish in the countries where the opposition don’t even have an ideology, adding that the opposition wants to keep him under pressure from day first.

“Their [opposition] sole aim is to get a National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), Imran said and added he would not give an NRO at any cost. “Former president Pervez Musharraf’s two NRO’s have pushed the country’s debt to Rs24,000 billion, adding that there is no future of the country if these corrupt elements were not held accountable.”

He said the previous governments left behind the historic fiscal and trade deficits which resulted in depreciation of rupee and price hike.

Regarding Afghan peace process, the premier said that Pakistan will make efforts for resumption of stalled peace talks, however, the talks between the US and Taliban collapsed. He said it will be tragedy if the talks do not resume and the Taliban do not participate in the Afghan elections.

The Prime Minister said that he will insist for resumption of peace process during his meeting with the US President Donald Trump on Monday.

He said peace in Afghanistan is in the interest of Afghan people as well as Pakistan. He said Pakistan has tried its best to improve relations with Afghanistan.

Responding to the queries of the media persons regarding Kashmir, the prime minister ruled out talks with India unless it lifts curfew in occupied Kashmir and revoke its illegal decisions there.

He said India is under the occupation of extremist and racist Hindus. He said the ideology of RSS is full of hatred against Pakistan and the Muslims.

The prime minister assured the nation that he will forcefully present the Kashmir case like never before at the UN General Assembly session.

He strongly condemned the Ghotki incident describing it a conspiracy against the country ahead of his address to the UN General Assembly session. He said attacks against the minorities are contrary to our constitution as well as teachings of Islam.

Earlier today, PM Imran Khan inaugurated 24/7 Torkham Terminal at Pak-Afghan border and the terminal will serve round the clock, seven days a week.
