World Cup 2019: Pakistan to face South Africa today

Pakistan to face South Africa today
Pakistan and South Africa will battle it out for a chance to stay alive in the World Cup and a place in the semi-final at Lord's today.

Both Pakistan and South Africa have won just one match in the World Cup and stand on ninth and eighth position respectively on the points table.

The green shirts lone win in the tournament came against hosts England while their game against Sri Lanka was washed out. Their 29-run drubbing at the hands of India left the team with three points from five matches and needing them to win all four of their remaining matches.

For Pakistan, their batting remains their main concern with no batsman making a mark so far apart from Babar Azam who has scored 163 in his four games.

If Pakistan wants to have a realistic chance of making it into the next round, their batsmen need to step up.

It is expected Haris Sohail may find a place in today's playing XI against South Africa.

On the other hand, Pakistan's bowling department has fared slightly better, with fast bowler Mohammad Amir the star for the green shirts with 13 wickets from five matches and a best of 5-30.

Their opponents South Africa also have a win from their six World Cup games and must win today's game if they want to remain in contention for a spot in the semi-final.

The Proteas who came into the tournament as one of the contenders have been unimpressive with their only victory of the tournament coming against Afghanistan.

The match between Pakistan and South Africa will begin at 2:30pm Pakistan Standard Time.

Maryam’s press conference was suicide attack on her own party: Firdous Ashiq

Maryam’s press conference was suicide attack on her own party: Firdous Ashiq
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan called Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Vice President Maryam Nawaz's recent press conference ' a suicide attack on her party'.

"By calling charter of the economy a joke, Maryam has, in fact, made fun of her uncle Shehbaz Shari," the special assistant said in a press conference.

"The PML-N is stuck with two narratives - one of Nawaz and another of Shehbaz - after today's press conference she should take Shehbaz's resignation."

Firduos said that going with the logic that Nawaz should be released because of his medical condition, over 90 percent of the prisoners must be released alongside Nawaz, adding that Maryam should remember she is a convicted criminal and she is on bail. “Courts have not absolved you from the cases,” she said.

Facebook co-founder says Libra could shift monetary clout to private companies

Facebook
Facebook Inc's Libra cryptocurrency would hand over much of the control of monetary policy from central banks to private companies, the company’s co-founder Chris Hughes said in an opinion piece on Friday.

"If global regulators don’t act now, it could very soon be too late," Hughes said.

Hughes also said the corporations that would oversee the new currency would put their private interests – profits and influence – ahead of public ones.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The social media giant revealed plans on Tuesday to launch a cryptocurrency called Libra and linked up with 28 partners in a Geneva-based entity called the Libra Association, which will govern the new digital coin set to launch in the first half of 2020.

Hughes, a former roommate of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, had earlier called for a break-up of the social network in an opinion piece in the New York Times in May. Facebook, then, rejected here Hughes' call to split the company in three.

The company has been under scrutiny from regulators around the world over data sharing practices as well as hate speech and misinformation on its networks. Some US lawmakers have pushed for action to break up big tech companies as well as federal privacy regulation.

Honda raises car prices by up to Rs425,000

Honda raises car prices by up to Rs425,000
Honda Atlas Cars Pakistan Limited (HACPL) has once again hiked its vehicle prices in the range of Rs260,000 to Rs425,000 for different models.

“Due to recent rupee devaluation and owing to the negative exchange rate impact, HACPL is compelled to increase the prices of Honda cars with effect from June 24, 2019,” said a company notice issued on Friday.

When the company increased prices last time, the dollar was worth Rs142 and now it had surged to Rs157, resulting in a huge gap, said Topline Securities’ auto analyst Hammad Akram.

“All raw material of the sector comes from abroad, therefore, the parts produced locally also face price increase due to the rupee depreciation against the dollar,” said JS Research analyst Ahmed Lakhani.

The company increased prices of Civic Turbo RS and 1.8L VTI CVT models by Rs400,000 each to Rs4.2 million and Rs3.6 million respectively.

Similarly, it raised the price of 1.8L VT SR CVT model by Rs425,000 to Rs3.82 million.

On the other hand, the prices of Honda City 1.3L MT and 1.3L AT were increased by Rs260,000 each to Rs2.18 million and Rs2.32 million respectively.

Honda 1.5L AT model became costlier by 260,000 as its price rose from Rs2.12 million to Rs2.38 million.
Electric vehicles face immense barriers to entry into Pakistan

The price of 1.5L Aspire MT model grew from Rs2.13 million to Rs2.39 million and 1.5L Aspire AT model rose from Rs2.27 million to Rs2.55 million.

On a similar note, the price of BR-V MT increased by Rs305,000 to Rs2.59 million and BR-V CVT by Rs350,000 to Rs2.78 million.

“The company hiked prices massively in one go so that it could not damage its image by increasing prices again and again,” said Lakhani.

It would not be easy for customers of the company to absorb the shock but this would fade out compared to repeated price hikes which were more irksome, he said.

‘I never asked for NRO over 8 years, why would I ask now’: Asif Zardari

Former president and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari
Former president and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, slamming the government for accusing him of seeking an NRO-like deal, on Saturday questioned why would he ask for it now when he had not sought over eight years.

“I didn’t ask for NRO over eight years and three months, why would I seek now,” he said while answering questions put to him by journalists at the Parliament House where he was brought by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on a production order issued by National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser to attend the budget session.

The PPP leader asked Prime Minister Imran Khan to spell out his viewpoint on a proposed charter of economy, adding the government should give its opinion first, then he would discuss it with the leadership of his party and other parties as well.

A day earlier, Asad Qaiser had said Prime Minister Imran Khan had agreed on constitution of a Special Committee on Charter of Economy to cope with economic challenges.

In tweets on his social media account, he said he had a meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday and they discussed different legislative, political and economic issues.

“We will get the opposition onboard for the greater cause of our country,” Asad added. He said this special committee for economy will consider only current economic conditions and will propose solutions.

US blocks more Chinese tech firms on national security concerns

US blocks more Chinese tech firms on national security concerns
The US Commerce Department blacklisted five Chinese tech entities Friday in a new move against Beijing's supercomputing industry likely to raise tensions ahead of a meeting between President Trump and Xi Jinping next week.

The notice targets Sugon — a prominent Chinese supercomputer manufacturer — along with three of its microchip subsidiaries and a computing institute owned by the People's Liberation Army.

All of the entities will be effectively barred from obtaining US technology after the government determined they were "acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States."

Trade tensions between the world's top two economies have spilled over into the tech sector in recent months, with Trump's administration moving to essentially ban Chinese tech firm Huawei from the huge US market on security grounds.

In May, it added Huawei to an "entity list" of companies barred from receiving US-made components without permission from Washington, though the company was granted a 90-day reprieve.

Facebook and Google have since both announced they will move to cut off Huawei in order to comply with the US sanctions, further isolating the Chinese tech giant.

Beijing has responded with threats to release its own blacklist of "unreliable" foreign companies and individuals that appears aimed at pressuring foreign companies to maintain commercial relations with Huawei.

Earlier this month, Beijing summoned executives from American firms Dell and Microsoft and South Korea's Samsung, among others, to warn them that any moves to ramp down their businesses in China may lead to retaliation, The New York Times reported.

Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi are set to meet next week on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Japan.

Bilawal should focus on Sindh govt’s performance: Firdous Ashiq

Firdous Ashiq
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan asked PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to focus his attention on performance of his party’s government in Sindh in lieu of criticising the federal government.

Taking to Twitter today, she said the PPP leader’s anger and threats to save his father gave credence to the fact that Prime Minister Imran Khan’s narrative is winning.

The special assistant advised Mr Bhutto Zardari not to indulge in corrupt practices or else the PPP, which had been limited to a province, will lose political support in districts and towns as well.

She said the people have rejected those who turned the province into ruins of Moenjo Daro. A Supreme Court judge’s remarks about Sindh are a question mark over the performance of the provincial government.

Ms Awan said cases against Asif Ali Zardari were instituted by the previous government of the PML-N.

Addressing a gathering in Benazirabad in connection with his mother and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s birthday anniversary, he had warned Prime Minister Imran Khan to do as much as he can endure.

He said the bureau wanted to bring the entire political leadership into the PTI’s fold.

The PPP chairman alleged NAB has booked Asif Ali Zardari and Faryal Talpur over fake charges of Rs 30 million financial irregularities.

Shahid Khaqan criticises the constitution of Commission of Inquiry

Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi
Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi criticised the constitution of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the rise in debts over the last decade, during his speech in the National Assembly on Saturday.

The Cabinet Division had yesterday issued a notification announcing the terms and conditions of the 12-member commission that is to be headed by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Deputy Chairman Hussain Asghar. The commission will probe how foreign debts swelled to Rs24,000 billion over the past 10 years.

Apart from Asghar, the commission includes one representative from NAB, Federal Investigation Agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Intelligence Bureau (IB), State Bank of Pakistan, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan, Federal Board of Revenue, Auditor General of Pakistan, Accountant General of Pakistan Revenue, Military Intelligence and special secretary of Finance Division each.

Expressing concern over the move, Abbasi said that members of the NAB, ISI and IB will now question the parliament and the budgets passed by the House.

"Those who have no basic knowledge about economy will review the decisions of the prime ministers, Parliament and cabinets," the PML-N stalwart said.

Abbasi also expressed scepticism over the ambitious revenue target of Rs5,550 billion set by the government in the proposed budget and asked: "Government has been unable to collect Rs4,000bn, how will it achieve a target with an additional Rs1,550bn?"

"The only way [to achieve the revenue target] is by further increasing inflation and prices of electricity and gas and devaluing the rupee even more," he said.

The former premier pointed out the difference between the amount of money allocated to interest payment in the 2019-20 budget and last year's budget.

"Previous government was paying Rs1,400bn interest on foreign loans. This government has allocated Rs2,900bn for interest.

"This budget has been drawn up by the IMF (International Monetary Fund)," he declared.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating situation of the economy, the PML-N leader said: "Only one year ago, GDP (gross domestic product) was around 6 per cent and inflation was 4pc. Within 10 months, the growth has come down to 50pc and inflation has increased by 100pc."

"If this is the state of economy in 10 months then what will happen in five years?"

He said that the dire economic situation was the result of the incompetency of rulers.

"Because of the incompetency of the government we had to reduce our defence budget... These rulers have put the country's national security at stake."

Abbasi was also critical of government's decision to include those people in the tax net who earn more than Rs50,000 a month, calling it "unjustified". The former premier said that the government had lost the confidence of the masses.

"Can you justify the imposition of [additional] taxes with your luxurious lifestyle and expenditures?" he asked. "People will not pay taxes until the rulers pay taxes."

Pakistan respects sovereignty, territorial integrity of Afghanistan: FM Qurashi

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi

Addressing inaugural session of Afghan peace conference titled "Lahore Process" at Bhurbhan in Murree on Saturday; he reiterated Pakistan's unshakable resolve to support peace, stability and long-term prosperity of Afghanistan.

The Minister said Pakistan supports an Afghanistan that is at peace with itself, and at peace with its neighbors. Pakistan respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan.

He said we are determined to build our bilateral relationship on the principles of non-interference, mutual respect and common interest.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said after the Afghan nation, no one has suffered more than the people of Pakistan due to this persistent instability and conflict. Advancing the cause of peace and stability in Afghanistan is, therefore, in Pakistan's own national interest.

He said we wish to see a friendly Afghanistan, governed by an elected leadership, representative of the aspirations of all Afghans.

The Foreign Minister said for far too long, the vicious circle of mistrust, often fed into by our common enemies, has affected our relationship. The blame-game has not helped either of us. It is indispensible to move away from this negative paradigm.

He said it is incumbent upon the leadership of the two countries to take practical steps to build mutual trust and confidence.

He said the two countries must not allow their respective territories to be used by anyone to the detriment of our interests.

He said Pakistan and Afghanistan have the same objective of long-term peace and prosperity in Afghanistan and the region.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said while others believed in a military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan, we always thought that a politically negotiated settlement is the only way forward. It is gratifying to note that others have also reached the same conclusion now.

The Foreign Minister said Pakistan has whole-heartedly facilitated the Afghan peace process in good faith and as a shared responsibility and will continue playing its due role.

He said our support has been crucial in overcoming the political stalemate that looked impossible to break just a year ago.

The Minister said in addition to playing our role in the peace process, Pakistan also remains committed to the Afghan reconstruction and development efforts, post-settlement.

He said we stand ready to help Afghanistan through trade, investment, connectivity and capacity-building of the Afghan people.

We are committed to enhancing people-to-people contacts and cultural exchanges.

He said Pakistan also wishes to work with Afghanistan, and the world community, to help create conditions that enable dignified, safe and voluntary return of Afghan refugees to Afghanistan.

US asks Pakistan to do more on religious freedom

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday urged Pakistan to do more to stop the abuse of blasphemy laws after the release of Asia Bibi, who escaped a death sentence in a case that drew international scrutiny.

Releasing an annual report on international religious freedom, Pompeo estimated that more than 40 others were serving life sentences or facing execution for blasphemy in Pakistan.

“We continue to call for their release and encourage the government to appoint an envoy to address religious freedom concerns,” Pompeo said.

Bibi, a Catholic, was convicted of blasphemy in 2010 and sent to death row. Despite public protests against her, Bibi was acquitted on appeal last year and in May was able to leave for Canada.

Pompeo also strongly criticized US adversaries Iran and China, pointing to Beijing’s detention of some one million Muslims, mostly from the Uighur ethnic minority group, and its “intense persecution” of Tibetan Buddhists, Christians and the Falungong spiritual movement.

While President Donald Trump’s administration has often hesitated to criticize ally Saudi Arabia, the report spoke of widespread abuses in the kingdom.

Khan sahab, do exactly as much as you can endure: Bilawal

Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday lashed out at Prime Minister Imran Khan while addressing supporters and party loyalists here at a gathering to commemorate the birthday of his late mother and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

The PPP chief made numerous jibes at the incumbent premier, warning Khan to "do exactly as much as you can endure".

Bilawal advised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief to pray that his father, PPP Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari "comes into power after you for he does not exact revenge.

"You know what you will face if the PML-N [Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz] comes into power after you," he added.

Addressing the PM by his last name Khan, Bilawal said: "You'll be stoned if Maulana [Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Fazlur Rehman] comes into power!"

"Khan sahab, you're a 70-year-old, elderly man. I'm a 30-year-old young man," he added.

The PPP chair observed how Khan "used to say he'd make us cry" but said: "I happily bade farewell to my aged father when he went to jail."

However, he added that his younger sister, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, was tearful when the PPP co-chair was leaving for jail. "Khan sahab, I'll make you pay for my younger sister's tears," he vowed.

Bilawal further referred to his late uncle as well. "Khan sahab, don't you forget that I'm the nephew of Shaheed [martyred] Mir Murtaza Bhutto!"

Bilawal noted that only cowards targeted the women and the elderly. He assuredly expressed hope that his father, Zardari, who was jailed earlier for more than a decade, would again be honourably acquitted.

US strike on Iran would have killed 150 people: Donald Trump

President Donald Trump
President Donald Trump said a US strike on 3 different Iranian sites would have killed 150 people but he cancelled it 10 minutes before the attack was going to be launched.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on Thursday shot down an intruding American spy drone in the country’s southern coastal province of Hormozgan.

Trump on Thursday morning warned that Iran’s decision to shoot down the US drone was “a big mistake,” and then reportedly approved military strikes against the country but pulled back late on Thursday after conferring with national security advisers and congressional leaders.

Trump on Friday morning tweeted that “they shot down an unmanned drone flying in International Waters. We were cocked & loaded to retaliate last night on 3 different sights (sic) when I asked, how many will die. 150 people, sir, was the answer from a General. 10 minutes before the strike I stopped it, not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.”

“I am in no hurry, our Military is rebuilt, new, and ready to go, by far the best in the world. Sanctions are biting & more added last night. Iran can NEVER have Nuclear Weapons, not against the USA, and not against the WORLD!” he added.

A Pentagon official told Newsweek that among the US's designated targets was the S-125 Neva/Pechora surface-to-air missile system and a Soviet system known to the NATO Western military alliance as SA-3 Goa.

The US military claims this weapon was used by the IRGC to down the Navy RQ-4A Global Hawk drone. However, Iran has officially stated that it used the domestically produced 3rd Khordad transporter erector launcher and radar, a variant of the locally-made Raad surface-to-air missile system.

Trump initially issued a series of threats, insisting that the RQ-4 Global Hawk was flying over international waters when it was taken down by an Iranian missile. But on Thursday even he played down the incident, saying it could have been a mistake.

“This is a new fly in the ointment,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office of the White House on Thursday while meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau there.

Trump further downplayed the incident by emphasizing the aircraft had been unmanned. He claimed that if the drone had had a pilot "it would have made a big difference" to him.

American political analyst Dennis Etler told Press TV on Friday that Iran should remain firm and resolute against Trump.

“Trump's decision to hold off a military strike against Iran is in keeping with his pattern of bluff and bluster. So long as Iran remains strong and resolute Trump will back off. He has his pit-bulls, Bolton and Pompeo on a short leash,” he stated.

“At least in this case he doesn't want blood on his hands,” added the scholar, who has a decades-long interest in international affairs.

And in an interview with Press TV last week Professor Etler said, “The only response to Trump and his henchmen is to remain firm and resolute. It is the only thing they understand.”

Sri Lanka were also indebted to an unbeaten 85 from Angelo Mathews as they won for just the second time in six games. Tournament favourites England, bowled out for 212, have now lost two of their six group matches.

England were 76-3 off 20 overs but, significantly, the in-form Joe Root was 40 not out on his Yorkshire home ground

Malinga, renowned for his unorthodox ‘slingshot’ action dismissed Jonny Bairstow for a golden duck as the batsman aimed across the line, with a review unable to spare the local hero.

James Vince (14), deputising for the injured Jason Roy, then fell in all too familiar fashion when an edged drive off Malinga was caught by Kusal Mendis at slip.

Morgan, fresh from his one-day international record 17 sixes against Afghanistan, made a cautious 21 featuring a mere two fours before Udana held a sharp return catch to dismiss the Dubliner.

Earlier, Jofra Archer moved joint top of the World Cup bowling charts as England restricted Sri Lanka to 232-9.

The fast bowler took 3-52 -- his fifth three-wicket haul in six matches this World Cup -- to join Australia’s Mitchell Starc on 15 wickets.

Fellow quick Mark Wood followed up with 3-40.

Sri Lanka’s total of 232-9 represented something of a recovery after a collapse to three for two.

Angelo Mathews’ painstaking 85 not out helped them bat their full 50 overs after Avishka Fernando revived the innings with a dashing 49 in his first match of the World Cup.

Restricted them

Spinners Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali bowled 20 overs between them for an economical 85 runs.

"We started off brilliantly to get two early wickets and then spinners controlled it in the middle," Wood said.

"They didn’t get away from us at all. Angelo Mathews played well but we restricted them. It was a great team performance."

Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne fell for just one when he edged Archer to wicket-keeper Jos Buttler.

And two balls later, without another run on the board, Kusal Perera slashed Chris Woakes to third man where Moeen, in his 100th ODI, held a safe catch.

But number three batsman Fernando, in just his seventh match at this level, hit 14 runs off one Archer over.

And off the penultimate delivery off the 10-over powerplay, Fernando hooked Archer for a six out of the ground that saw the umpires call for a replacement ball.

But, like Perera before him, Fernando was caught off an uppercut to third man, with Rashid holding on to a misjudged shot off Wood.

It was the end of a 39-ball innings featuring two sixes and six fours.

Mathews looked badly out of touch during an 84-ball fifty with Sri Lanka managing just six boundaries in total from the 11th to 40th overs.

But with Yorkshire’s Rashid taking two wickets in two ball, the former captain’s runs kept his side in the game.

England, third in the table, will go ahead of leaders Australia if they defeat Sri Lanka, currently sixth in the standings.

The top four sides at the end of the 10-team round-robin group stage will qualify for the semi-finals.

NAB chairman orders action against Fawad Chaudhry over remarks on accountability process

federal minister Fawad Chaudhry
The National Accountability Bureau has rejected federal minister Fawad Chaudhry' recent remarks on the accountability process, saying they can hurt adversely affect the anti-graft body's ongoing investigations.

Speaking on Geo News talk show Capital Talk earlier this week, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry had claimed that it was the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government, and not NAB, that was carrying out accountability in the country.

But, in a press release issued on Friday, the Bureau rejected the minister's claims, which it said were contrary to facts and tarnished the image of the anti-corruption watchdog. NAB said Chaudhry's remarks also negated the hard work of its officials, who have been discharging their duties with honesty and the aim to eliminate corruption from the country.

"The statement by Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry can influence and cause hurdles in NAB's ongoing investigations," the Bureau said in the press release.

It added that the Bureau had not received any reference for accountability from the Government of Pakistan.

NAB chairman Justice (R) Javed Iqbal has directed the Director-General of NAB Rawalpindi to obtain verified copies of Fawad Chaudhry's statement from the the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and take necessary action against him according to the law, the press release added.

Iran releases first photos of downed US drone's wreckage

Iran releases first photos of downed US drone's wreckage
Iran has released the first photos of the wreckage of a US spy drone which was shot down early Thursday after intruding into the Iranian airspace.

The IRGC Aerospace Force displayed parts of the doomed drone on Friday noon, refuting earlier claims by the US that the UAE was flying over international waters, and had not violated the Iranian airspace.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps said Thursday it had shot down the unmanned US aircraft after it breached the country's airspace.

Iran issued "numerous" warnings before shooting down the aircraft, Brigadier General Qader Rahimzadeh, the second-in-command of Iran's Khatam al-Anbia Air Defense Base, said on Friday.

The last warning was issued at 3:55 am, ten minutes before the shoot-down, IRGC Aerospace Commander Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said.

He make the remarks to reporters on the sidelines of an exhibition held in Tehran to showcase the drone's wreckage.

US President Donald Trump initially issued a series of cataclysmic threats, insisting that the RQ-4 Global Hawk was flying over international waters when it was taken down by an Iranian missile.

However, the GPS coordinates released by Iran put the drone eight miles off the country’s coast, inside the 12 nautical miles from the shore, which is Iran's territorial waters.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi earlier told the Swiss envoy that "there are irrefutable evidence about the presence of this drone in Iran's airspace and even some parts of its wreckage have been retrieved from Iranian territorial waters."

Swiss ambassador summoned

The Swiss envoy, whose country represents the US interests in Iran, was later summoned to the Iranian foreign ministry on Friday morning, and received an official note which he said will immediately deliver to the US.

In a meeting with an Iranian foreign ministry official, Swiss Ambassador Markus Leitner was asked to tell the US that the Islamic Republic is not after a war with any country, but the Iranian Armed Forces will give a "crushing response to any aggression."

The Swiss envoy was told that the US will be held accountable for the consequences of such provocative measures.

“The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will show restraint as long as possible to preserve the security and tranquility of the sensitive region of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

"But if the other side takes a provocative and unconsidered move, they will not hesitate to give a reciprocal response with unpredictable consequences,” the Iranian official noted, saying the response will be detrimental to all parties involved.

In a letter on Thursday, Iran's Ambassador to the UN Majid Takht-Ravanchi told the United Nations that the international community needs to confront Washington's destabilizing actions.

“Iran condemns, in the strongest possible terms, this irresponsible and provocative wrongful act by the United States, which entails its international responsibility,” he wrote in a letter addressed to UN chief António Guterres and the UN Security Council on Thursday.

Takht-Ravanchi wrote that Iran had the right to defend its sovereignty according to the world body's Charter.

Trump approves strikes against Iran, then abruptly pulls back: NY Times

President Trump
President Trump approved military strikes against Iran before dawn Friday but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night, the New York Times reports.

The paper cited military and diplomatic officials as saying that the US president had initially approved attacks on a handful of Iranian targets, like radar and missile batteries.

"The operation was underway in its early stages when it was called off," the Times said, citing what it called a senior administration official.

"Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down," the official said.

The source said that US forces were woken up around 2 am local time "within the hour" of striking, then nothing happened. Plans to attack were said to have still been on by 6:30, even 7 pm EDT.

A Pentagon official told Newsweek that among the US' designated targets was the S-125 Neva/Pechora surface-to-air missile system and a Soviet system known to the NATO Western military alliance as SA-3 Goa.

The US military claims this weapon was used by the IRGC to down the Navy RQ-4A Global Hawk drone. However, Iran has officially stated that it used the domestically produced 3rd Khordad transporter erector launcher and radar, a variant of the locally-made Raad surface-to-air missile system.

Trump initially issued a series of cataclysmic threats, insisting that the RQ-4 Global Hawk was flying over international waters when it was taken down by an Iranian missile.

However, the GPS coordinates released by Iran put the drone eight miles off the country’s coast, inside the 12 nautical miles from the shore, which is Iran's territorial waters.

Trump's decision to call of the strike came after intense discussions and debate at the White House among the president’s top national security officials and congressional leaders in the Situation Room, the paper said.

According to The New York Times, Trump’s national security advisers split about "whether to respond militarily" after Iran shot down a US surveillance drone for intruding into its airspace.

Senior administration officials said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, hawkish national security adviser John Bolton and CIA director Gina Haspel had favored a military raid.

"But top Pentagon officials cautioned that such an action could result in a spiraling escalation with risks for American forces in the region," the New York Times said.

According to the Times, congressional leaders emerged from the president’s classified briefing and urged Trump to de-escalate the situation. They called on the president to seek congressional authorization before taking any military action.

“This is a dangerous situation,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi reportedly said.

After firing off a volley of belligerent rhetoric, Trump has seemed to be looking for a way to avoid a potentially serious military crisis. Instead of directly accusing the leaders of Iran, Trump said it was an individual in Iran who was responsible for shooting down the drone.

“This is a new fly in the ointment,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office of the White House on Thursday while meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau there.

"I think probably Iran made a mistake - I would imagine it was a general or somebody that made a mistake in shooting that drone down," Trump said.

The news of the downing, however, was first announced by Iran which took responsibility for the strike and asserted that the high-altitude American drone was operating over Iranian air space.

In an apparent effort to find a way out of the dilemma, the US president downplayed the incident by emphasizing the aircraft had been unmanned. He claimed that if the drone had had a pilot "it would have made a big difference" to him.

"We had nobody in the drone. It would have made a big difference, let me tell you, it would have made a big, big difference" if the aircraft had been piloted, Trump said.

Meanwhile, sources tell Newsweek that numerous regional US military assets, including the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf, have been put on 72-hour standby.

The US Federal Aviation Administration also issued an emergency order prohibiting US operators from flying in an overwater area of Tehran-controlled airspace over the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman due to heightened tensions.

Trump is behind all the current escalation. Last year, Trump pulled the United States out of the 2015 nuclear pact with Iran, over the objections of China, Russia and American allies in Europe.

He has also imposed economic sanctions on Iran, trying to cut off its already limited access to international trade, including oil sales.

Earlier this month, the US government ratcheted up the stakes by sending an aircraft carrier strike group and B-52 bombers and at least 1,500 troops to the Middle East in a message to Iran.

Iranian officials have said the country is not after a war, but is ready for one.

Iran’s ability to target and destroy the high-altitude American drone, which was developed to evade the very surface-to-air missiles used to bring it down, surprised Pentagon officials.

They "interpreted it as a show of how difficult Tehran can make things for the United States as it deploys more troops and steps up surveillance in the region," the New York Times wrote.

Wrong to blame any individual for Pakistan's poor show: Hafeez

Senior all-rounder and former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez
Senior all-rounder and former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez has said the last few days have been very painful for him and his team as the national side has come under severe criticism following their poor show in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

Hafeez told media at Lord’s following Pakistan team’s practice session on Thursday that everyone—from the players to the management—was responsible for the team’s performance so far and that any single individual could not be blamed.

"We failed collectively as a team. We could not produce a team effort and individual brilliance did not help us either. In cricket these days, you need team performance…input from everyone," Hafeez highlighted.

"We can't blame any single person, everyone is responsible for failing to deliver," the former captain said.

'All is not lost'

The senior all-rounder was, however, hopeful that Pakistan would bounce back as the break after the game against India had given the team a chance to regroup ahead of their match against South Africa.

"All is not finished for us. We are focused on our next game and we are eager to win that match. We got ample time after the India game to regroup for a new beginning," Hafeez said, hoping Pakistan was still alive in the tournament.

He also expressed his displeasure at the personal attacks on players following the team's defeats.

"Commenting on cricket is another thing, but to drag players' families and attacking them is not a good thing," he expressed.

Replying to a question, Hafeez said opting to bowl after winning the toss against India was the team's collective decision.

"Team's decision can’t be made on what someone has tweeted. It was team's decision. We didn’t bowl well and that’s why we lost that game," Hafeez said.

He also denied rumours of grouping in the team, saying that such speculation takes place every time the team loses and that there was no truth in such stories.

"Why don't you talk about such things when the team is winning," asked Hafeez.

Xi Jinping visits North Korea's Kim ahead of Trump talks

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Pyongyang on Thursday
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Pyongyang on Thursday on a historic visit to burnish an uneasy alliance, with the two men each facing challenges of their own with US President Donald Trump.

Xi is the first Chinese president to visit North Korea in 14 years, after relations between the Cold War era allies deteriorated over Pyongyang's nuclear provocations and Beijing's subsequent backing of UN sanctions.

But as he embarked on a flurry of diplomacy last year, Kim ensured that Xi – the leader of his country's key diplomatic supporter and main provider of trade and aid – was the first head of state he met.

The North Korean leader has now visited his older ally four times in China and Pyongyang has been increasingly keen for Xi to reciprocate, while according to diplomats Beijing has been biding its time to see how nuclear talks between Kim and Trump play out.

But Beijing's own trade negotiations with Washington hit a wall last month and some analysts say Xi is now looking for leverage ahead of his meeting with Trump at next week's G20 summit in Japan.

"When both China & North Korea are confronted by US, they have a lot to discuss with each other," Lijian Zhao, the deputy chief of mission of China's embassy in Pakistan, wrote on Twitter.

Pyongyang wants to demonstrate to Trump that it has China's support with the nuclear negotiations at a standstill after Trump and Kim's second summit broke up without a deal.

At their formal talks, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Kim told Xi that the North had taken "many positive measures to avoid a tense situation" over the past year, "but has not received positive responses from the relevant parties".

"This is not what the DPRK wants to see," CCTV's voiceover cited him as adding.

For Pyongyang, the visit "will serve to show the US that China has its back and to send a message to Washington it should stop its maximum pressure posture", said Lim Eul-chul, professor of North Korean studies at Kyungnam University.

'Positively evaluated'

According to Chinese state media Xi told Kim that he "positively evaluated" the North's efforts and was "willing to strengthen coordination and cooperation with the DPRK and all relevant parties".

China has fretted over being sidelined by diplomatic developments since last year, with Trump going as far as declaring he had fallen "in love" with Kim, and the comment was a clear assertion of Beijing´s place in the negotiations.

"Xi wants everyone to remain acutely aware that he can influence Kim, and that no comprehensive, durable deal with North Korea can occur without China´s assistance -- and approval," Scott Seaman, Asia director of the Eurasia Group consultancy, said in a research note.

21-gun salute

Kim met Xi at Pyongyang airport as he began a two-day state visit with his wife Peng Liyuan, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and other officials, television images showed.

Portraits of the two leaders stood outside the terminal, pictures showed, and a 21-gun salute was fired before the pair drove into the capital together, standing in a convertible Mercedes Benz past tens of thousands of cheering residents lining the streets and more waving from their windows.

Pyongyang always puts on an impressive show when a foreign leader visits but in an unprecedented move, Xi was welcomed at the Kumsusan Palace, the mausoleum where the preserved bodies of the North´s founder Kim Il Sung and his successor Kim Jong Il – the grandfather and father of the current leader – lie in state.

The Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the mouthpiece of the ruling party, devoted the top half of its front page to the visit, with a colour picture of Xi, a day after it carried an article by him, also on the front page.

The show of amity belies a sometimes strained relationship – Kim did not visit Beijing to pay his respects for more than six years after inheriting power.

Authorities have imposed tight restrictions on other media, with international journalists in Pyongyang not allowed to cover the visit, and no non-Chinese foreign media organisations given visas.

Beijing sees the North as a strategic buffer, keeping the 28,500 US troops in South Korea far from its borders, and Xi´s trip was to include a stop at Pyongyang's Friendship Tower, which commemorates the millions of Chinese troops who saved Kim Il Sung´s forces from defeat during the Korean War.
