Bilawal condemns ‘raids’ at Sharif family’s houses as ‘shameful’

Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has deplored as shameful alleged raids by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) at the residences of Opposition Leader in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif’s family.

While the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) said NAB officials raided the residences of the party president’s family members, the corruption watchdog said a couple of its officials visited the family’s houses to deliver summons.

In a statement, the PPP chairman said it is shameful to subject opposition leaders’ daughters to political vendetta.

“Storming the houses in the name of serving notices is deplorable,” he said.

“Such an attitude towards daughters, sisters and mothers negated the principles of Madina state,” he added.

NAB Lahore on Saturday said Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz refused to disclose anything about his family members during his appearance before it.

When the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader was asked about his mother Nusrat Shehbaz and his sisters, Rabia and Javeria, he said, “You had better ask them yourself.”

“When he was asked about his brother Salman Shehbaz, he said you should contact him in London,” said the DG NAB Shehzad Saleem.

'Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker' sees return of emperor Palpatine

'Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker' sees return of emperor Palpatine
The ninth film in the original Star Wars saga will be called The Rise of Skywalker, and will feature the return of the evil emperor Palpatine to threaten the young heroine Rey and the Resistance, Walt Disney Co revealed on Friday.

Disney showed fans attending the “Star Wars Celebration” convention in Chicago the first footage from the movie, which will be released in theaters in December and will conclude the story that began in 1977.

A villainous cackle was heard at the end of the trailer, and the actor who played Palpatine in previous films, Ian McDiarmid, walked onstage to loud applause from an audience of roughly 10,000 fans, many waving colorful lightsabers.

As of Friday afternoon, the Rise of Skywalker trailer had been viewed online about 11 million times.

Director JJ Abrams, speaking alongside a handful of cast members, said the movie takes place some time after the events of the 2017 film The Last Jedi.

The footage showed a hug between Princess Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher, and Rey (Daisy Ridley). Fisher died in 2016, but Abrams said that in a “weird miracle,” he was able to piece together unused footage from Last Jedi to continue the beloved character’s story.

“Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that’s mind-blowing for me,” he said.

The director disclosed little about the plot, however.

“This movie is about this new generation, what they’ve inherited, the light and the dark, and are they ready?” he told the crowd.

In an interview, Abrams told Reuters that writers met with Star Wars creator George Lucas before they started to script the final chapter in one of the world’s most-celebrated movie franchises.

The goal was “to create something that gives a sense of surprise and thrill and heartbreak, and shock and awe, but also feeling like an inevitability,” he said.

The circumstances surrounding Palpatine’s return remain a mystery. The character appeared to die in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. In the trailer released on Friday, the voice of Luke (Mark Hamill) says to Rey that “no one’s ever really gone.”

Luke also tells Rey that “we have passed on all the knowledge,” and that the fight against evil is now hers.

Ridley, John Boyega, who plays Resistance fighter Finn and Oscar Isaac, who portrays pilot Poe Dameron, all attended the event.

But the largest ovations came for Kelly Marie Tran, who plays mechanic Rose Tico, and Billy Dee Williams, who returns to the series as con artist Lando Calrissian after last playing the character in 1983.

“Lando never really left me,” Williams said.

Naomi Ackie, who joined as a new character named Jannah, said she could not confirm or deny speculation that Jannah was Calrissian’s daughter.

A new droid, D-O, also rolled onto the stage, joining BB-8 and R2-D2.

Fans were delighted.

“I got chills. I was pretty emotional from the panel leading into it and then when the trailer kicked off I was just so thrilled. I just can’t wait,” said Jon Barnes.

Premier League: Tottenham climb to third, Cardiff near drop

Lucas Moura’s first Premer League hat-trick helped Tottenham Hotspur climb above Chelsea into third after a 4-0 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town on Saturday.
Lucas Moura’s first Premer League hat-trick helped Tottenham Hotspur climb above Chelsea into third after a 4-0 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

With Chelsea not in action until Sunday when they take on title-chasing Liverpool, Spurs cruised past the already-relegated Yorkshire side at their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to move on to 67 points, one ahead of Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Spurs also forged four points clear of their neighbours Arsenal, who travel to Watford on Monday.

Two Paul Pogba penalties earned a lethargic Manchester United a 2-1 victory over West Ham United and lifted them above Arsenal into fifth place.

“They played better than us, it is fair to say, I don’t think anyone will disagree,” United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after his side secured only a second win in their last six matches in all competitions.

“We got away with it, sometimes we have lost when we should have won, so over a season it evens itself out.”

At the other end of the table, Cardiff City edged closer to the drop with a 2-0 defeat at Burnley, while Brighton & Hove Albion’s third successive league defeat, a humiliating 5-0 home loss to Bournemouth, heightened their relegation fears.

In the absence of the injured Harry Kane and the rested Son Heung-min, though, Spurs still made it three wins out of three at their inspiring new home, Victor Wanyama’s early goal being followed by Lucas’s treble, which featured two late strikes.

The victory was an important one for Tottenham, who face a daunting trip to league leaders Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, before the same fixture takes place in the Premier League next weekend.

“After the game when Harry got injured everyone believed Sonny was going to step up and is going to be the man, but we have seen today Lucas got a hat-trick and it was an unbelievable afternoon for him,” Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

“It is going to help and bring him confidence. We have ahead a very tough period, two games against Manchester City and then Brighton.”

Cardiff edge closer to drop

Five points from safety, Cardiff travelled to fellow relegation candidates Burnley knowing they need to start picking up points with time running out this season, but they found themselves behind just after the half-hour mark.

Chris Wood’s close-range header did the damage, with the New Zealand international making sure of the win in stoppage time, inflicting a third successive defeat on Cardiff, who have just five games left to avoid the drop.

Brighton are anything but safe in 17th after slipping to a third successive defeat of their own, with Bournemouth’s comprehensive victory moving them onto 41 points with safety in sight.

Brighton and Cardiff meet on Tuesday at the Amex Stadium, where victory for Brighton would leave them eight points clear of the effectively doomed Welsh club.

Elsewhere, 16th-placed Southampton also moved one step closer to survival with a 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, while relegated Fulham secured just their fifth league win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Everton.

Sunday’s action kicks off with second-placed Manchester City facing a tough trip to Crystal Palace — one of the few sides to have beaten Pep Guardiola’s men this season.

Liverpool will host Chelsea in Sunday’s late kickoff.

One dead in shooting outside Australia nightclub, three injured

One dead in shooting outside Australia nightclub
A drive-by shooting outside a nightclub in the Australian city of Melbourne inflicted “horrific injuries” that killed a security guard and wounded three men, police said on Sunday, but there was no suggestion yet that the attack was terror-related.

Australia has some of the world’s toughest gun control laws, adopted after its worst mass murder, when a gunman killed 35 people at Port Arthur in the island state of Tasmania in 1996.

Sunday’s shooting took place around 3.20am in the lively entertainment district of Melbourne’s southeastern suburb of Prahran, police said.

Three security guards and a man queueing to enter were taken to hospital with gunshot injuries, police said in a televised news conference in Melbourne.

“It would appear that shots have been discharged from a car in this area into a crowd standing outside the nightclub,” homicide inspector Andrew Stamper said.

The victims suffered “horrific injuries” from a weapon fired in close proximity, he added.

One guard died in hospital, another man was in critical condition and two escaped life-threatening injuries. One guard was shot in the face, the Age newspaper said.

However, there was no suggestion yet that the attack was terror-related, a police spokeswoman said by telephone.

Bloodstained clothing and bullet casings littered the street outside the entrance to the second-storey Love Machine nightclub early on Sunday.

Police urged witnesses who saw any vehicle moving at speed around 3am to come forward, and mentioned a black Porsche SUV that was later found burnt-out in the north Melbourne suburb of Wollert.

No arrests have yet been made, and investigation continues.

A murder-suicide last year in Western Australia that killed seven members of a family was the country’s worst mass shooting since the Port Arthur case.

Neighboring New Zealand has adopted legislation to ban semi-automatic firearms and assault rifles after its worst peacetime shooting in March, which killed 50 worshippers in two mosques in the city of Christchurch.

Khalilzad hopes to end Afghan war this year

US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad
US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad on Saturday urged all Afghans, including the Taliban, to work on a roadmap to end the Afghan war this year.

In a series of tweets released hours after the Taliban announced a new spring offensive, the US chief peace negotiator also urged Pakistan and Qatar to condemn the Taliban’s announcement, arguing that an increase in violence will only hurt the peace process that these two states were backing.

Read more: US not in Afghanistan to rebuild the nation, says Pompeo

“All sides must end unnecessary violence, and instead engage in intra-Afghan dialogue which leads to negotiations on a political settlement and a roadmap to end the war this year,” he wrote in a tweet.

Mr Khalilzad leads the US team in talks with the Taliban that are held in Doha, Qatar, with Pakistan’s support, which responded positively to a US request to facilitate the talks. So far, six rounds of peace talks have been held in Doha while the seventh is scheduled on April 19.

“On behalf of the United States, I condemn this announcement of a spring offensive, and call on Pakistan, Qatar, and other nations that want peace in Afghanistan to do the same,” Mr Khalilzad wrote.

In Kabul, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani described the Taliban offensive as an “illegitimate war,” reminding the insurgents that Muslim religious leaders across the world had “clearly said that the war in Afghanistan has no religious legitimacy and its continuance has no legitimate judgment.”

The Taliban announced their spring offensive, called Operation Al-Fatha, on Friday, declaring that their “Jihadi obligation has not ended yet.”

Even before the announcement, the Taliban had increased attacks on Afghan government targets, killing dozens of soldiers in the past two weeks. A separate roadside bombing near Bagram killed three American soldiers this week.

In Kabul, Afghan government officials announced that they plan to send a 100-member delegation to Doha, which will include government representatives as well, although most of its members will come from outside the government.

Last week, the Taliban announced that they have a reached an agreement with the US to allow Afghan government representatives to join a larger delegation of Afghan civilians and tribal elders.

Ambassador Khalilzad, who leads the US delegation in these talks, welcomed this concession but strongly condemned the Taliban decision to launch a spring offensive as “reckless.”

“It is irresponsible to suggest that an increase in violence is warranted because the government announced a security plan,” he wrote in a tweet.

Kabul says the security plan, called Al-Khalid, followed recent Taliban attacks and aims at protecting government targets and Afghan civilians from such attacks.

“The US and our international partners will stand with Afghan security forces to continue our effort to end the war in Afghanistan,” Ambassador Khalilzad wrote.

“At a time when all Afghans should come together in talks to determine a common future, a call for fighting suggests the Taliban are stuck in the ways of the past.”

MPs urge UK to cooperate with Sweden in Assange case

MPs urge UK to cooperate with Sweden in Assange case
More than 70 British lawmakers have urged their government to prioritise any extradition bid Sweden might make for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is also wanted in the United States.

Assange was arrested on Thursday at Ecuador’s London embassy on allegations of skipping bail, and on a US extradition warrant related to a huge leak of official documents. In the letter, the MPs and peers urge British Home Secretary Sajid Javid to “give every assistance to Sweden should they want to revive and pursue the investigation”.

British law states that if Sweden does make an extradition request, it would be up to Javid to decide which should take precedence.

“We must send a strong message of the priority the UK has in tackling sexual violence and the seriousness with which such allegations are viewed,” the letter says.

The sexual assault claim expired in 2015 and Swedish prosecutors dropped a preliminary investigation into the rape allegation in 2017, arguing that since Assange could not be reached, they could not proceed.

Following his arrest, however, the alleged rape victim asked that her case now be reopened — but the limitation period on this claim expires in August 2020.

Four dead in Pishin as flood 'system' enters Balochistan from Iran

flood in Pishin
At least four people died and one injured as a flash flood "system" — that entered Balochistan after wreaking havoc in Iran — swept away a car Saturday evening in the Pishin district, authorities said.

According to Levies officials, the flood in Khanai Baba River hit the car of Abdul Noman and his family, all residents of Kuchlak and who were on their way to attend a wedding in Khanozai, and swept it away in its strong currents.

Abdul Noman, alongside his grandchildren Ubaid Khan, Saraun Khan, and Saffan Khan, were all in the car when the flood took it and declared dead later. A woman nearby was injured but saved by the rescue personnel.

The woman who was saved was transferred to a local hospital and was being tended to.

Last week, Iranian officials said the disaster had so far killed 62 people, left aid agencies struggling to cope, and seen 86,000 people moved to emergency shelters.

The flooding had also caused hundreds of millions of dollars of damage to Iranian agriculture as the parliament speaker questioned whether government funds would be adequate to compensate communities and farmers.

About 1,900 cities and villages have been affected by floods and exceptionally heavy rains since March 19.

Now, however, that the clouds system has entered Balochistan, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) have forecasted storms and heavy rains and said it was expected to stay for at least a couple of days.

Both organisations have predicted heavy rainfall for the next two to three days in various Balochistan districts, including Sherani, Zhob, Musakhel, Qila Saifullah, Loralai, Barkhan, Pishin, Quetta, Qilla Abdullah, Mastung, Chagai, Sibi, Ziarat, Harnai Khuzdar, Nasirabad, Kharan, Turbat, and Awaran.

In addition, the canals and rivulets in the province are expected to overflow and, thus, warnings have been issued.

The PDMA, on the other hand, has issued an alert given the forecast of heavy rains in the coming week. It has further written a letter to the deputy commissioners of all districts in Balochistan, advising the imposition of Section 144 on all picnic points.

Moreover, the Gwadar district administration, in light of extreme stormy rains, has advised all fisherfolk to stay out of the sea today and tomorrow.

NAB rejects Marriyum's claim over raid at house of Hamza’s sister

NAB rejects Marriyum's claim over raid at house of Hamza’s sister
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has rejected the statement of former Punjab’s information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb in which she claimed the NAB raided the house of Hamza Shehbaz’s sister.

The NAB, in its statement, said the team had arrived at the residence of Hamza’s sister to get the notice accepted. There was no raid at her house, the spokesperson for the accountability watchdog said.

The spokesperson said some elements were trying to discredit the NAB with their false claims.

In another clarification, The National Accountability Bureau also rejected claims made by Punjab Assembly’s opposition leader Hamza Shehbaz that NAB director general was taking action against him ‘under duress’.

Hamza Shehbaz, earlier in the day, had cited Punjab’s NAB director general as saying that he was taking action against the Sharifs under pressure. Hamza went on to say that NAB chief also demanded him to withdraw a resolution from Punjab Assembly that cast doubts on his academic degree.

In his clarification, the NAB spokesperson said DG NAB Lahore had never spoken to Hamza about his degree. “The allegations leveled by the PML-N leader are all baseless and unfounded.”

The spokesperson said concrete evidence was found against the Sharif family against money laundering.

Pakistan Cricket Board
The Pakistan Cricket Board has announced 15-member squad each for T20Is and ODIs for the series against South Africa with Ramin Shamim replacing Anam Amin and Javeria Rauf making a comeback almost after four years.

The squad was announced by the chief selector Urooj Mumtaz along with two other members of the selection committee – Asmavia Iqbal and Marina Iqbal – in Karachi after a series of practice games between women cricketers.

Anam Amin, who was part of Pakistan’s squad that played against West Indies earlier this year was dropped and has been replaced by Ramin Shamim, who is named in Pakistan team for the first time.

Urooj explained that Anam was dropped due to her failure in the fitness test.

“Anam couldn’t pass the fitness test, she was far behind in all four areas of the tests,” Urooj, also a former captain, told media while announcing the team.

30-year old Javeria Rauf has been added to Pakistan ODI after four years. She scored three half-centuries in recently concluded PCB inter-department women T20 championship. She last played an ODI for Pakistan in 2014 and has played just one T20I since 2014.

Javeria has replaced Saba Nazir from the squad that was picked for the previous series. Saba, however, has been named among reserved players for the tour.

Natalia Parvez has also been dropped from the T20 squad.

Pakistan’s ODI squad for the ICC Championship ODIs against South Africa include Bismah Maroof, Nahida Khan, Javeria Rauf, Sidra Amin, Javeria Wadood, Omaima Sohail, Nida Dar, Aliya Riaz, Kainat Imtiaz, Sidra Nawaz, Sana Mir, Nashra Sandhu, Diana Baig, Aimen Anwer, and Rameen Shamim.

Iram Javed will replace Nahida Khan for the T20I squad.

Reserved players for the series include Muneeba Ali, Saba Nazir, Fareeha Mehmood, and Fatima Sana.

Urooj Mumtaz said that squad has been picked from best available players and expressed hope that the team will produce positive results.

“I am very hopeful that team will produce good results and will continue to doing good the way they did against West Indies,” she said.

Pakistan women cricket team will leave for South Africa on 29th April.

South Africa tour schedule:

'Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker' sees return of emperor Palpatine

The ninth film in the original Star Wars saga will be called The Rise of Skywalker

Man killed in new cow lynching in India

Man was killed and three injured in new cow lynching in India
Indian police said Saturday one man was killed and three injured in an attack by a mob while they were skinning a dead ox, in the latest case of so-called cow lynching.

The animal is revered by Hindus and according to Human Rights Watch, 44 people died in cow-related violence between May 2015 and December last year by Hindu vigilantes.

Opponents of Prime Minister Narendra Modi say that such groups have become emboldened since his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept to power in 2014.

The latest incident happened in the eastern state of Jharkhand late on Thursday when men from a local Christian community were skinning the carcass of an ox in a field.

"The men were armed with iron rods and sticks and attacked the group of skinners brutally," said M L Meena, a senior Jharkhand police official.

The three men injured in the attack were sent to hospital. Two men have been arrested for alleged murder and five more were on the run, Meena said.

It was unclear whether the accused were part of a Hindu vigilante group or acted on their own initiative, he added, saying the four men attacked were from a local tribal group and had been charged with illegal cow slaughter.

Meena said the charges were based on a complaint by a Hindu villager who said he witnessed the slaughter of the ox.

"So far the investigation has showed the ox died naturally. We are doing a thorough probe," he said.

Beef ban

Cow slaughter and the consumption of beef is illegal in mineral-rich Jharkhand — and in 19 other states — but restricted slaughter of other bovines like buffalo and ox is allowed.

Modi, who is running for a second term in elections that began on Thursday and run until May 19, has condemned cow-related violence.

Under his government, laws about cow slaughter are now applied more strictly and punishments have increased.

In 2017 his government tried to ban the cattle trade for slaughter nationwide, only for it to be rejected by the Supreme Court.

Aside from the violence, which is mostly directed at India´s minority Muslim community and low-caste Dalits, the number of stray cows in India has also risen sharply.

This is because the fear of prosecution or violence has led to farmers abandoning old and sick cows instead of selling them for slaughter.

Last year a top minister in Modi´s cabinet was criticised for celebrating eight people convicted of lynching a Muslim cattle trader after they were released on bail.

Last week a Muslim man was brutally assaulted by a mob in north eastern Assam state over allegations he was selling beef. There is no prohibition on cow slaughter or beef consumption in the state.

Information Minister Fawad demands Aleem’s release on bail

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry and former Punjab minister Aleem Khan
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said on Saturday there is an impression that former Punjab minister Aleem Khan is being punished for the offence he has not committed just because of opposition leaders’ hue and cry over NAB actions against them.

In a message on Twitter, he said the charges Aleem is facing are less serious.

If suspects who had pocketed billions of rupees were awarded bail easily, then a businessman who didn’t face any allegations of causing a loss to the national exchequers should be granted bail, he demanded.

Earlier, on April 11, an accountability court had extended judicial remand of PTI leader Aleem Khan until April 20 in assets beyond means and offshore companies.

The jail officials produced the accused before the court in a tight security.

During the hearing, the judge asked the NAB prosecutor about filing of reference against the accused. The prosecutor replied the probe was under way and it will be filed soon.

The judge said filing final reference was the NAB’s responsibility and it should do it at the earliest.

Congress leader claims Modi-led govt involved in money laundering scam

Congress leader Kapil Sibal
Congress leader Kapil Sibal alleged that the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government was involved in a money laundering scam during the 2016 demonetisation drive, The Hindu reported.

Sibal made these allegations while addressing a press conference and claimed that the currency notes worth thousands of crores were printed abroad and transported into India.

During the press conference, the former law minister played two video clips, the first of which showed a sting operation in which a government official said BJP’s top leadership was involved in the money exchange operation.

The official, identified as Rahul Ratharekar from the government’s intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), claimed to an undercover reporter that officials from 26 departments were involved in the money exchange operation and transported into India by special aircraft.

In another video, the official can be seen carrying out the exchange of old currency for new ones.

“The video shows the exchange of demonetised notes with the new ones in a government godown in Maharashtra,” Sibal said.

However, did not authenticate the videos and maintained that all the names mentioned in the clip were in the public domain and could be independently verified by the agencies, Hindustan Times reported.

“Demonetisation is the biggest scam in the history of India. Current notes (issued after the old Rs 500/100 notes were demonetised in November 2016) were printed abroad and transported into India and there can be nothing more anti-national than this,” Sibal said.

“Will this Government arrest these people, will the ED [Enforcement Directorate] arrest these people? Will the CBI arrest all the people who are involved? They will not, because ED protects those who loot the country,” Sibal asked.

Muslims felt greatest sense of oneness, highest life satisfaction: study suggests

Muslims felt greatest sense of oneness, highest life satisfaction
Muslim people feel the most satisfied with their lives because they feel more 'oneness,' or connection than people of other faiths, a new study suggests.

Measuring life satisfaction is about as close to quantifying 'happiness' as we've been able to get thus far, and a German psychologist's new study suggests that a feeling of 'oneness' predicts overall contentment.

And when the researchers divided their 67,562 survey respondents by religion, Muslims felt the greatest sense of oneness.

Research from a number of disciplines, including religion, philosophy and psychology have suggested that varying types of connectedness lead to an over-arching sense of well-being.
What is happiness, and how do we get it? It's one of the 'big questions' of psychology.

We don't know, we won't know and it probably wouldn't be universally applicable even if we did.

But Dr Ed Deiner, a professor emeritus of psychology the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is famous in academic circles for managing to make a scale for happiness - or the 'Satisfaction with Life Scale' (SWLS).

Dr Deiner's scale consists of five questions that are meant to surmise how subjectively satisfied someone is with their life as a whole.

Each question gets a ranking for how strongly the participant disagrees or agrees, on a scale of one to seven.
The higher you score, the more satisfied with your life you are (supposedly).

A number of studies, including a 2016 Pew Research Center survey, have suggested that people who describe themselves as 'highly religious' are more likely to say they are 'very happy' with life.

The vast majority (95 percent) of these highly happy Americans were Christians: Protestant, Catholic or Mormon.

But spirituality - regardless of affiliation with a specific religion - is also closely linked to life satisfaction, well-being and, in cancer patients, optimism.

Psychologists have landed on the idea of 'oneness' as the common thread running through spiritual people of all faiths.

The so-called 'father of psychoanalysis,' Sigmund Freud thought that all humans craved to return to the 'oneness' of being in their mother's womb, connected in every way to her.

More contemporary psychologists have also put forth oneness as a personality trait that distinguishes people who seek and make more connections with others, the environment and their notion of a higher power or God.

And all of these concepts of oneness seem to correlate with greater life satisfaction, which, in turn, is linked to better mental and physical health outcomes.

Researchers at the University of Mannheim in Germany wanted to parse out how oneness affected life satisfaction across religions.

So, they surveyed over 67,000 non-students (using student samples is thought to limit and skew data on feelings of 'oneness' and self-reported life satisfaction) of unclear nationalities about their religious affiliations and used crafted questions to assess how connected and fulfilled these adults felt.

Among all groups, Muslims were most likely to believe that they were connected to something larger than themselves, according to the new study, published in the journal of the American Psychological Association.

Second to Muslims, Christians that considered themselves neither Catholics nor Protestants reported the greatest average oneness beliefs, followed by Buddhists and Hindus.

Atheists felt the least connected to others or a higher power.

What's more, the mathematical model the researchers devised confirmed a strong link between oneness and life satisfaction.

'[The results] clearly indicate that the causal direction of the association between oneness beliefs and life satisfaction is in line with the assumptions derived from the literature: oneness beliefs are a significant determinant of life satisfaction over time, whereas there is no reversed effect of life satisfaction on oneness beliefs,' study author Dr Laura Marie Edinger-Schons, a University of Mannheim psychologist, wrote.

'It would be of high interest to test whether individual differences in oneness beliefs predict differences in real adaptation, for example, coping with stressful life events.'

Buddhism's goal is Nirvana - which is, in fact, reached by dispelling suffering, which the religion considers to have its roots in the craving for attachment.

Hinduism's core belief is in truth.

But the single most important tenet in Islam is that of 'Tawhid,' the belief in the 'invisible oneness concept of monotheism,' or of one unifying god.

So, it's perhaps no surprise that Muslims feel greatest sense of oneness.

It's difficult to quantify how the spiritual sense of 'oneness' and connection changes our brains and bodies, but we do know that strong social connections encourage everything from longevity to better immune systems, greater empathy and less anxiety and depression.

And perhaps a sense of spiritual connectedness comes with the same.

'This study broadens the knowledge on the psychology of religion, revealing not only the average level of oneness beliefs in the different religious groups but also exploring the effect of these beliefs on life satisfaction while controlling for the effect of religious affiliation,' the researchers wrote.

Nepal bans online game PUBG on concerns over children

Nepal bans online game PUBG on concerns over children
Nepal has banned the hugely popular but brutal online game "PlayerUnknown´s Battlegrounds" over concerns about its impact on children, officials said Friday.

In the multiplayer game, commonly known as PUBG, players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others and survive. The last player or team standing wins.

Nepal´s telecommunication authority issued a circular to all internet service providers on Thursday to block PUBG on instruction from the Kathmandu district court.

"We sought an order from the court to ban PUBG after floods of complaints from parents, guardians and school organisations to block the game citing psychological impact on teenagers and students," senior police official Dhiraj Pratap Singh told AFP.

The survival-themed battle game, made by South Korean firm Bluehole Inc, has been downloaded more than 100 million times around the world since it was launched in 2017.

Parents and educators say the game incites violence and distracts students from their studies.

Saugat Joshi, 28, an occasional player said parents should instead speak to their children about better gaming habits.

"Banning is not a solution. Right now PUBG is viral but next year there might 10 others, we can´t ban everything," Joshi said.

Last year, China announced new controls on the number of games that can be played online, limited new releases, and imposed rules on underage players to reduce their screen time.

PUBG is also banned in the Indian state of Gujarat, where dozens of people have been arrested for playing.

A minister in the coastal Indian state of Goa has described PUBG as "a demon in every house".

For the ultimate 'Game of Thrones' fan. How to speak Valyrian

For the ultimate 'Game of Thrones' fan. How to speak Valyrian
American linguist David J. Peterson may have built up the unique and ancient languages for the television series “Game of Thrones” but when it comes to who speaks Valyrian best, there’s no contest.

“The best is Jacob Anderson,” Peterson told Reuters. “He plays Gray Worm on ‘Game of Thrones’ and he’s so good, he’s so good. He is head and shoulders better than me.”

“When I heard him the first time speak the Valyrian language I just said, ‘wow.’ I went back and re-watched it,” he said.

Peterson, a co-founder of the Language Creation Society, started off by building on a few keys words and phrases created by George R.R. Martin in his “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels that form the basis of the HBO hit medieval fantasy series about warring families.

“I didn’t reference any other languages. After I included all of (Martin’s) material I built it up in a way that I thought book readers and George R.R. Martin himself would expect and appreciate.”

When Peterson got the scripts for the TV show, producers tagged all the lines he had to translate into Valyrian or Dothraki.

He then broke up the language syllable by syllable for the actors, and recorded it for them.

“I record really slow so they can hear exactly how it’s pronounced, and then I record the English for reference,” Peterson said.

Although the final season of “Game of Thrones” starts on Sunday, the languages will go on living.

Peterson has developed a course on the Duolingo foreign language app where fans can learn to speak Valyrian for free. According to the Duolingo app, there are currently over 800,000 active Valyrian learners - more than those learning Norwegian or Hindi.

“I also do all the recordings so that’s my voice that you’re hearing when you use the app. And I also take it myself because it’s nice to brush up,” Peterson said.

Disney unveils price, launch date for big streaming push

Disney unveils price, launch date for big streaming push
Walt Disney Co priced its highly anticipated streaming video service below Netflix in an aggressive move to challenge the dominant streaming service and entice families to buy yet another monthly subscription.

Disney said on Thursday its new family-friendly streaming service will cost $7 monthly or $70 annually with a slate of new and classic TV shows and movies from some of the world’s most popular entertainment franchises in a bid to challenge the digital dominance of Netflix.

The ad-free monthly subscription called Disney+ is set to launch on Nov. 12 and in every major global market over time, the company said. In addition to Disney films and TV shows, it will feature programming from the Marvel superhero universe, the “Star Wars” galaxy, “Toy Story” creator Pixar animation the National Geographic channel and the entire library of “The Simpsons.”

“What we are putting forward is an aggressive strategy,” Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger told analysts at the presentation. “We’ve got to be very serious and all in on it.”

The company set a target of luring between 60 million to 90 million subscribers and achieving profitability in fiscal year 2024. It plans to plow a little over $1 billion in cash to finance original programming in fiscal 2020 and about $2 billion by 2024.

The cost of the service was lower than the $7.50 per month that Wall Street analysts expected on average, according to a Reuters poll, and could likely be seen as a stronger bid to appeal to more customers.

Patrice Cucinello, a director at Fitch Ratings, said Disney had priced the new service “very affordably.”

“Disney is approaching streaming offerings, particularly Disney+, with guns blazing, looking to take share and quickly ramp subscriber growth,” Cucinello said.

To get it in front of more people, Disney said it has struck deals with Roku Inc and Sony Corp to distribute Disney+ on streaming devices and console gaming systems and expects it to be widely available on smart televisions, tablets, and other outlets by launch. It did not mention if it would be available on Apple Inc’s upcoming video service.

Disney kicked off its presentation to Wall Street analysts at its Burbank, California, headquarters on Thursday with a video that demonstrated the breadth of its portfolio, showing clips from dozens of classic TV shows and movies from “Frozen” and “The Lion King” to “Avatar” and “The Sound of Music.”

The transformation of the Mouse House, as it is known, from a cable television powerhouse into a leader of streaming media could be Iger’s final legacy as he told Wall Street analysts he would not extend his contract beyond 2021 and was working with the board of directors on a succession plan.

Executives said they see opportunities to take its ESPN+ sport streaming video service to Latin America and are looking into international expansion of its Hulu streaming video business, which offers movies and shows targeted to adults.

Disney also forecast Hulu’s subscribers to reach 40 million to 60 million by fiscal 2024 and reach profitability in the United States by either 2023 or 2024. Hulu currently has 25 million subscribers and is expected to lose $1.5 billion in the current fiscal year.

The digital push is Disney’s response to cord-cutting, the dropping of cable service that has hit its ESPN sports network and other channels, and the rise of Netflix Inc. The Silicon Valley upstart has amassed 139 million customers worldwide since it began streaming 12 years ago.

Disney will join the market at a time when audiences are facing a host of choices, and monthly bills, for digital entertainment. Apple, AT&T Inc’s WarnerMedia and others plan new streaming services.

To bolster its potential digital portfolio, Disney recently purchased film and TV assets from Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox and gained prized properties such as “Avatar.”

Disney had been supplying new movies such as “Black Panther” and “Beauty and the Beast” to Netflix after their runs in theaters but ended that arrangement this year to feed its own streaming ambitions. The company estimated it is foregoing $150 million in licensing revenue this fiscal year by saving programming for its own platforms.

The Disney+ programming will draw in part from Disney’s deep library of classic family films. It also will include exclusive original content such as a live-action “Star Wars” series called “The Mandalorian,” a show focused on Marvel movie villain Loki, and animated “Monsters at Work,” inspired by hit Pixar movie “Monsters Inc.”

Some new Disney movies, such as a “Lady and the Tramp” remake, will go directly to the Disney+ app. Other new releases will appear on Disney+ after their run in theaters and after they cycle out of the home video sales window, executives have said.

Australian PM sets election for May 18

Australia’s prime minister
Australia’s prime minister on Thursday called a national election for May 18, firing the starting gun on what promises to be a bareknuckle campaign focused heavily on climate and the economy.

The vote will decide whether the conservative government gets a rare third term in office — and whether embattled incumbant Scott Morrison can beat the odds and hang on to power.

Polls have consistently shown his centre-left Labour opponents with a commanding lead, suggesting a new administration led by former union leader Bill Shorten.

But Australian elections are often tight affairs, with a couple dozen marginal seats deciding the outcome, and both party leaders have low approval ratings and have struggled to connect with voters.

Morrison took office less than a year ago in a coup by the hard right of his Liberal party and has struggled to bridge a divide between party moderates and nationalist populists who have grown in confidence in the age of Donald Trump. He has tried to paper over these divisions and make sure the campaign focus is squarely on the party’s economic record.

“We live in the best country in the world,” Morrison said making the election announcement in Canberra. “Our future depends on a strong economy.” “Who do you trust to deliver that strong economy?” he asked.
