NA-33 by-election underway amid tight security

NA-33 by-election underway amid tight security
Polling is underway for the by-election in the National Assembly constituency in Hangu, NA-33, today (Sunday) with around 4,500 cops deployed in the area to avert any untoward incident.

The polling started at 8am and will continue uninterrupted till 5pm.

A fierce contest is expected between PTI, JUI-F and ANP for the National Assembly seat in Hangu.

Hangu District Police Officer Ikramullah said during a media talk that the security arrangements had been finalised by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold a peaceful and transparent by-poll.

He said the police, along with the Quick Response Force and Rapid Response Force personnel, would patrol across the constituency during the polling process, while the Frontier Reserve Police would remain on standby at the police lines to cope with any emergency.

Over 0.314 million people are exercising their right to vote and five candidates are contesting in the by-election on NA-33, the seat which fell vacant after the demise of PTI MNA Haji Khayal Zaman in February.

The candidates are Saeed Umar of Awami National Party (ANP), Obaidullah of JUI-F, Nadeem Khan of PTI and Atiq Ahmed and Muhammad Saeed, who are running as independent candidates.

A spokesperson of the ECP said 210 polling stations, including 55 for women only and 91 combined for both men and women, have been set up for the poll.

According to the official, 110 of these polling stations were declared sensitive while 77 had been declared highly sensitive.

Adequate security arrangements have been made around these stations, he said.

A control room has been set up at the office of the Provincial Election Commissioner Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to monitor the by-election. In case of any complaint, the public can contact on these telephone numbers: 091-9211034, 091-9222475.

Chief election commissioner appealed to voters to exercise their right to vote without any fear, saying that no interference in the polling process will be tolerated and immediate action will be taken against any violation.

PTI MNAs slapped and pulled hairs of Deputy Speaker of Punjab Assembly

Punjab Assembly
Members of Punjab Assembly belonging to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have slapped and pulled hairs of Deputy Speaker of Punjab Assembly Dost Muhammad Mazari ahead of election of Chief Minister of Punjab.

According to details, PTI lawmakers manhandled and threw "lotas" at Deputy Speaker, who also belongs to their own party. Dost Muhammad Mazari left the hall after the incident.

The PA session was scheduled to start at 11:30am but was delayed due to the absence of the PTI members.

The PTI lawmakers caused a ruckus inside the assembly when they brought "lotas" to the house and started chanting "lota, lota" (turncoats) as they lashed out at dissident PTI MPAs who parted ways with the party and decided to support the Opposition.

PML-Q’s Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, who is also supported by PTI, had expressed doubts on the role the deputy speaker and said that despite being the speaker, he was not the custodian of the house today as he is a contender for the chief minister’s slot.

"Time will prove whether the deputy speaker was honest or not. We will try to hold a transparent election today," Elahi said, adding he knows from where Dost Mohammad Mazari is taking instructions and will share details at the right time.

The Punjab Assembly has 183 members of PTI and 10 members of PML-Q. The ruling coalition also has the support of five deviant members of PML-N. The coalition claims that it has the support of 189 members.

However, more than 24 members of PTI Punjab Assembly have defected and joined the opposition. Tareen group, Aleem Khan and Asad Khokhar along with their supporters have announced support for Hamza Shahbaz.

Russia Hits Kyiv Missile Factory After Moskva Flagship Sinks

Ukraine russia conflict
Russia pounded a Ukrainian rocket factory after losing an iconic warship in the Black Sea, as the Pentagon on Friday backed Kyiv s claim to have sunk the Moskva with cruise missiles.

The Vizar plant, near the capital s international airport, was seriously damaged in the overnight strikes, an AFP journalist saw.

Russia said it had used sea-based long-range missiles to hit the factory, which Ukraine s state weapons manufacturer says produced Neptune cruise missiles.

"There were five hits. My employee was in the office and got thrown off his feet by the blast," Andrei Sizov, a 47-year-old owner of a nearby wood workshop, told AFP.

"They are making us pay for destroying the Moskva," he said. It was the first major Russian strike around the Ukrainian capital in over two weeks.

A Pentagon official briefing reporters said Ukraine had hit the Moskva with two Neptunes -- contradicting Russia s claim that the ship lost balance in rough seas as it was towed to port after ammunition exploded.

The Moskva had been leading Russia s naval effort in the seven-week conflict, and the fate of its crew of over 500 was uncertain.

The Pentagon official said survivors were observed being recovered by other Russian vessels, but Ukraine authorities said bad weather had made rescue operations impossible.

WhatsApp tests new feature to organize groups for work, school

WhatsApp
WhatsApp is testing a new feature called Communities to organize groups in larger structures that could be used by workplaces or schools, the messaging service owned by Meta Platforms FB.O said on Thursday.

WhatsApp head Will Cathcart said the feature would bring together groups, which are capped at 256 users, under bigger umbrellas where administrators could send alerts to a community of thousands.

"This is really oriented at the communities you re already a part of in your life that are doing private communication," said Cathcart in an interview with Reuters, citing Salesforce-owned CRM.N Slack or Microsoft Teams MSFT.O as comparable types of communication.

He said there were no current plans to charge for the new feature, which is being beta tested with a small number of global communities, but did not rule out offering "premium features to enterprise" in the future.

The messaging service, which is end-to-end encrypted and has about 2 billion users, said the Communities feature would also be end-to-end encrypted.

WhatsApp has grappled with abuses including bulk messaging and the spread of misinformation and hate speech. Cathcart said users would not be able to search for different Communities on WhatsApp and that it would use anti-abuse tools and safeguards like forwarding limits for the new feature.

WhatsApp said there would also be changes to its Groups feature before the launch of Communities. It said it was adding the ability for group administrators to remove problematic messages from everyone s chat, introducing voice calling for up to 32 people, increasing file sharing to 2 gigabytes and adding emoji reactions to messages.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Thursday post that Communities would be rolled out over the coming months. He said Meta would be building community messaging features for Facebook, Messenger and Instagram.

Meta also plans to roll out end-to-end encryption across the other messaging services on its apps as part of its ongoing, declared pivot towards privacy.

Elon Musk sued by shareholders over delay in disclosing Twitter stake

Elon Musk
Elon Musk was sued on Tuesday by former Twitter shareholders who claim they missed out on the recent run-up in its stock price because he waited too long to disclose a 9.2% stake in the social media company.

In a proposed class action filed in Manhattan federal court, the shareholders said Musk, the chief executive of electric car company Tesla, made "materially false and misleading statements and omissions" by failing to reveal he had invested in Twitter by March 24 as required under federal law.

Read more: Twitter to test much-awaited feature

Twitter shares rose 27% on April 4, to $49.97 from $39.31, after Musk disclosed his stake, which investors viewed as a vote of confidence from the world's richest person in San Francisco-based Twitter.

Former shareholders led by Marc Rasella said the delayed disclosure let Musk buy more Twitter shares at lower prices, while defrauding them into selling at "artificially deflated" prices.

A lawyer for Musk had no immediate comment. Tesla is not a defendant.

U.S. securities law requires investors to disclose within 10 days when they have acquired 5% of a company, which in Musk's case would have been March 24.

Twitter announced on April 5 that Musk would join its board of directors, but this week said he had decided not to.

By not joining the board, Musk, a prolific Twitter user, can keep buying shares without being bound by his agreement with the company to limit his stake to 14.9%.

Some analysts have suggested Musk could push Twitter to make changes, or even pursue an unsolicited bid for the company.

Rasella said he sold 35 Twitter shares for $1,373, or an average price of $39.23, between March 25 and 29. Musk is worth $265.1 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

The case is Rasella v Musk, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 22-03026.

US congratulates Shehbaz on election as prime minister

US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken
US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken on Wednesday congratulated newly-elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and vowed to continue its long-standing cooperation with Pakistan's government.

Shehbaz was elected the 23rd prime minister of Pakistan on Monday after his predecessor, Imran Khan, was removed from office through a no-confidence vote last week.

In a statement issued last night, Blinken expressed that Pakistan had been an important partner on wide-ranging mutual interests for nearly 75 years and US valued their relationship.

"The United States views a strong, prosperous and democratic Pakistan as essential for the interests of both countries," he added.

Responding to the statement, the Prime Minister's Office reaffirmed the need for cooperation with United States. "The new government wishes to constructively and positively engage with the US to promote shared goals of peace, security and development in the region," it tweeted.

The PMO also highlighted the need for deepening the relationship on the principles of equality, mutual interest and mutual benefit.

Blinken's comments come a day after Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said that the US had a "healthy military-to-military relationship with Pakistani armed forces", adding that "we have every expectation that will be able to continue to be the case".

"We recognise that Pakistan plays a key role in the region. We recognise that Pakistan and the Pakistani people are, themselves, victims of terrorist attacks inside their own country," he added.

In response to a question on allegations of the ousted premier against the US for its role in regime change, Kirby had declined to comment and said that US would not talk about Pakistan's domestic politics.

Ties between Islamabad and Washington touched a new low after former prime minister Imran Khan accused the US of conspiring to dislodge his government. He based his allegation on a diplomatic cable in which it was reportedly said that a State Department official had warned of consequences for bilateral ties if the no-confidence motion against then PM Imran Khan failed.

Washington had denied the allegation.

Ties with the US came particularly were already under stress since February when former PM Imran Khan went ahead with his planned trip to Moscow, which coincided with Russia's military onslaught of Ukraine.

Later, Pakistan abstained from voting on a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia's actions and demanding its immediate withdrawal from Ukraine even though the US and its European allies had urged Islamabad to support the resolution.

Mending fences with the US would be one of the top foreign policy priorities for the new government.

PM orders probe into delay in metro bus service project

PM Shehbaz
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Thursday issued orders of the first inquiry against the PTI-led government for a delay in the launch of a metro bus project pending for the last four years.

He directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to operationalise the Islamabad Metro Bus Service from April 16.

Read more: Pakistan to request China to include KCR in CPEC: PM Shehbaz Sharif

The premier, at 7am, visited the Peshawar Morr metro bus station and reviewed the on-ground progress of the project.

Islamabad Metro Bus Service was launched by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in 2017 and was due to become functional in 2018.

PM Shehbaz Sharif directed to run the metro bus service from Peshawar Morr to Islamabad International Airport in order to facilitate the passengers travelling towards the airport.

He also ordered to carry out a feasibility study as per Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules for two additional routes, namely from Rawat and Bhara Kahu, connecting the airport.

He directed to establish a metro bus station at the motorway for better connectivity and to enhance the benefit of the service to a maximum number of people.

Terming it “severe negligence”, PM Shehbaz expressed dismay over the delay in the materialisation of the project as Rs16 billion had already been spent on the mega project of public importance.

He termed it “unfair” towards the general public whose tax money had been consumed, however, the return facility was being denied to them.

He directed the officials concerned to make TORs of the inquiry to assess the reasons for the delay that led to the loss of national wealth.

The prime minister suggested ensuring the installation of racks in the buses to accommodate the luggage of passengers en route the airport.

He also directed running free of cost service for a trial period until the installation of ticketing machines.

PM Shehbaz Sharif, after assuming office on April 11, had ordered to make operational the Islamabad metro bus service within five days.

During the visit, PML-N leaders Ahsan Iqbal, Marriyum Aurangzeb, Hanif Abbasi and Anjum Aqeel accompanied the prime minister.

The officials of the National Highway Authority and CDA briefed the prime minister about the project.

It was highlighted that initially 30 buses would be run on the 24-kilometre-long track from Peshawar Morr to Islamabad International Airport, while 15 buses will be taken from Punjab Mass Transit Authority, Rawalpindi till the new fleet is added to the metro service.

The prime minister was informed that the CDA was temporarily operating on behalf of the government, while a separate Metro Bus Authority was required to be formulated.

Buses will be covered in orange skin for route coding. The NHA to N5 station will take 6-8 minutes and from N5 to the airport around 25-30 minutes. The shuttle service will be run at a stretch of 11 kilometres.

Sharing pictures of PM Shehbaz’s visit, Marriyum Aurangzeb, in a tweet, said the premier had given directives to run free of cost metro bus service during the month of Ramadan. She said the previous rulers were making the excuse of “foreign conspiracy” to cover up their incompetence and corruption.

WB wants Pakistan to end energy subsidies

The World Bank
The World Bank has made improved economic growth projections for Pakistan but sees deterioration in the external debt repayment capacity and called for urgent measures to avoid risks of running large fiscal and current account deficits.

The Washington-based lender also asked Pakistan to immediately withdraw energy subsidies, terming these “unsustainable and ineffective”. The new government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will make a decision on Friday (tomorrow) whether it wants to continue these fuel subsidies at their current levels.

Read more: Experts' huddle convened as country stares at economic crisis

In the latest South Asia Economic Focus report, the Washington-based lender also reported a sharp rise in loan default cases on former prime minister Imran Khan’s Kamyab Jawan Programme.

The Bank warned that Pakistan could not afford to have large external imbalances. It cautioned that rising interest rates in the developed countries could also lead to capital outflows, putting pressure on the currencies in countries grappling with high external indebtedness.

“This is of particular concern in countries with high levels of foreign currency-denominated debt, such as Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Maldives,” the report said. “They are thus more exposed to swings in the risk appetite of foreign investors amid higher geopolitical uncertainty,” it added.

Due to short-term politically motivated ‘Naya Pakistan Scheme’ of the central bank, about $2.5 billion loans by overseas Pakistanis were now at the risk of being withdrawn, according to the sources.

The indicators of ability to pay were deteriorating in Pakistan and were unsustainable in Sri Lanka, according to the WB report. Pakistan’s public debt service as percentage of its earnings from exports and remittances would increase by 1% to around 2.5% of the GDP, it added.

While the foreign exchange reserves level at the end of the PTI government being released by the central bank, the official reserves have already dipped to $11.3 billion as of April 1 despite gross $53 billion loans that the last government took to increase reserves and finance the current account deficit.

“I am, in short term, not concerned that the current account deficit will not be financed but in longer run it is essential that current account deficit and fiscal deficit should be narrowed down by Pakistan,” Hans Timmer, World Bank Chief Economist for the South Asia Region, said.

Responding to a question, Timmer called for immediate withdrawal of energy subsidies, which according to him, was one of the sources of running large current account and fiscal deficits.

The government is paying around Rs35 per litre subsidy on petrol, of which Miftah Ismail of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz hinted at a review during the upcoming price determination on Friday.

Meanwhile, the World Bank has revised its economic growth projections for Pakistan but cut the overall growth rate for South Asia region.

In Pakistan, GDP growth is expected to slow to 4.3% in fiscal year 2021-22, from the level of 5.6% in the previous fiscal year. However, the 4.3% projection is nearly 1% higher than the earlier forecast made in January. But it was still below the target set by the PTI government.

The World Bank has also accepted Pakistan’s 5.6% GDP growth figure for the last fiscal year, ending its years long stance where it was reluctant to take numbers approved by the government of Pakistan.

The World Bank said that economic growth rate would slow down to 4.3% due to monetary tightening measures that began in September 2021, high base effects from the previous year, and continued high inflation eroding real private consumption growth.

The World Bank has also cut the South Asia region growth forecast by 1% to 6.6% due to impact of the Ukraine war. The report said that South Asia has faced multiple shocks in the past two years, including the scarring effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The report also revealed that banks’ losses from the Kamyab Jawan Programme, introduced by former prime minister Imran Khan, were on a steep rise.

Data on the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme, which accounts for 23% of total loan disbursements by the microfinance sector, showed “a sharp increase in both (non-performing loans) NPL amount and the number of NPL accounts since 2021’s second quarter”, according to the report.

It said these losses were consistent with the deterioration in asset quality post Covid support measures.

At the end of the June last year, the NPLs of Kamyab Jawan programme amounted to Rs300 million as less than 100 accounts defaulted. But the figure has risen to Rs1 billion or nearly 300 accounts, according to the report.

The default figure is only on the basis of the small tier-I loans having loan size of Rs100,000 to Rs1 million. The World Bank did not give default figures of tier-II and tier-III loan schemes.

The report stated that Pakistan’s microfinance borrowers represented approximately 94% of the approved applications for the loan deferral and restructuring programmes.

Close to half of the net-loan portfolio of microfinance banks (MFBs) in the country participated in the programmes. It said that it was thus not surprising that gross NPLs of MFBs rose sharply by Rs4.3 billion or 42.7% year-over-year in the second quarter of 2021 when loan moratoriums expired.

This surge was partly driven by the non-repayment of borrowers who took advantage of loan deferment or restructuring facilities a year earlier. But given the relatively small size of the microfinance sector in Pakistan, which takes up just 3.6% of total loans as of the Q4 of 2021, any stress is likely going to be localised, it added.

Imran announces to launch nation-wide protests

Imran in Peshawar
In his first public address since losing his government via a successful no-confidence motion against him in the National Assembly, former Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced to lauch nation-wide protests.

"Whenever a prime minister of Pakistan was removed, people used to distribute sweets. But I am thankful to God that I was removed and you all came and gave me such respect," Khan said in his opening remarks while addressing his supporters.

"Pakistan has now become a nation. Whoever thought that an imported government of the US would be accepted by this nation ... on Sunday, the entire nation gave their answer that the imported government stands rejected.

Khan said that the "decisive moment" has arrived and the nation needs to choose if it wants slavery or liberty. "Do we want to be the slaves of the US' slaves or do we want real freedom?"

He said that the 'imported government' currently in charge was full of individuals out on bail. "Shehbaz Sharif is out on bail, his son is out on bail, Nawaz Sharif is a convict, and his son is an absconder in London and the same is the case with his sons, daughter and son-in-law."

Khan said that the Americans have "disrespected" Pakistan by "imposing outlaws" on this nation. "I will go to every city of the country ... and I challenge to them that they would have never seen the kind of mobility of the public the way I would do."

The PTI chairman accused newly appointed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of being involved in corruption to the tune of Rs40billion.

"Everyone should know that this is not the Pakistan of the 1970s when the US conspired to remove Zulfikar Ali Bhutto ... this is not the same Pakistan. The Pakistan of today is of social media. The country has 60 million mobile phones. All our youth now have a voice and no one can zip their mouths."

Khan addressed Shehbaz and told him to stop the harassment of PTI supporters. "This crackdown that you're doing against our youth over social media ... listen to this clearly ... the day we give the call, you would not find a place to hide."

Footage shared by the PTI showed a throng of people at the rally's site.

Prior to Khan taking the stage, his fellow party leaders, including Ali Amin Gandapur, KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, former defence minister Parvez Khattak, Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid and National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri addressed the gathering.

Bilawal said that the decision of him being appointed as the foreign minister depends on his party, adding that all members of the coalition should at this point work together to address the economic issues and for the electoral reforms.

Replying to a question regarding ex-prime minister Imran Khan's demand of early, free and fair elections, Bilawal said: “We absolutely want free and fair elections but in order to have free and fair elections we must legislate on electoral reform.

“As everybody knows the 2018 elections that [Imran] Khan used to come to power have been widely condemned not only nationally but internationally as rigged and compromised elections that resulted in three years of autocratic, dictatorial rule.”

Becky Anderson, the host of the show, mentioned that ex-PM Imran Khan does still enjoy popular support, referring to his tweets of the protests held after his ouster, she questioned Bilawal that what are his thoughts on PTI chairman’s view that his dismissal was all a “US-orchestrated conspiracy”.

Bilawal, while referring to US January 6 movement, said: “I think that the Americans will be able to relate to what is Pakistan going through now […] where Mr Khan despite knowing that he has lost his majority in Parliament tried acting through his speaker to induct a constitutional coup.”

Calling Khan’s “foreign conspiracy” claims a “big lie”, the PPP chairman said that he [Imran Khan] is the first prime minister in the history of Pakistan to be ousted through democratic, constitutional means and this is the “massive victory for Pakistan’s democracy”.

“As far as his support is concerned, of course, little factious all over the world enjoy their cult following but that does not mean that the majority of Pakistan should be dictated to by these factious regimes,” he maintained.

Crypto: 10 billion reasons bitcoin could become a reserve currency

Crypto
A crypto platform’s pledge to amass $10 billion worth of bitcoin to back its own "stablecoin" is firing up the market. It’s part of a wider movement to crown bitcoin as the reserve currency of a new age.

Seoul-based Terraform Labs has so far built up nearly 40,000 bitcoin worth $1.7 billion in a series of purchases via a non-profit affiliate, Luna Foundation Guard, according to publicly available blockchain data.

Read more: Rupee gains respite following ease in political turmoil

The spree follows Terraform co-founder Do Kwon’s announcement on Twitter last month that the project would buy the $10 billion worth of bitcoin reserves to underpin TerraUSD, breaking ranks with other large stablecoins - a ballooning class of cryptocurrencies that aim to minimise wild price swings and are typically backed by U.S. dollar reserves.

A stablecoin backed by bitcoin reserves, according to Kwon, "will open a new monetary era of the Bitcoin standard", referencing the gold standard that formed the backbone of global finance about a century ago.

The acquisitions, and the anticipation of more to come, are supporting the price of bitcoin, with some market players identifying them as a big driver of bitcoin s climb back towards $48,000 at the end of March. More significant, perhaps, is whether others will follow Terraform s lead.

"Buying $10 billion worth can move the price in the short term," said Sid Powell, CEO of Sydney-based crypto lender Maple Finance. "But over the longer period, it s more what it signals - that bitcoin has been introduced as the hottest form of collateral backing for currencies."

Russia closes on Mariupol as US warns of chemical threat

russia ukraine conflict
Russian troops intensified their campaign to take the port city of Mariupol on Tuesday as part of an anticipated massive onslaught across eastern Ukraine that the United States warned might include the use of chemical weapons.

Moscow is believed to be trying to connect occupied Crimea with Russian-backed separatist territories Donetsk and Lugansk in Donbas, and has laid siege to the strategically located city, once home to more than 400,000 people.

Reports emerged on Monday from Ukraine s Azov battalion that a Russian drone had dropped a "poisonous substance" in the area, with people experiencing respiratory failure and neurological problems.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he was unable to confirm the allegations, but that Washington had "credible information" Russia might use tear gas mixed with chemical agents in the besieged port.

The United States sounded the alarm as civilians were struggling to flee, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemning alleged mass rapes in areas previously occupied by Russian troops.

The last time chemical weapons were unleashed during a conflict was in Syria where a civil war erupted in 2011 as rebels sought to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

The world s chemical weapons watchdog said it was "concerned" by the unconfirmed reports coming from Mariupol, and was "monitoring closely."

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the use of such weapons by Moscow would "elicit a response not just from the United States, but from the international community," without elaborating.

"We have had justified reason to be concerned... that this could be a tactic they might employ, which is to try to mask a potential more serious chemical attack with the riot control agents," he told reporters.

As the fighting dragged toward its seventh week, the Ukrainian army fought desperately to defend Mariupol against the Russian offensive.

Pakistan hints at ameliorating ties with US

Pak-US ties
The new government wishes to constructively and positively engage with the US to promote shared goals of peace, security, and development in the region, the Prime Minister's Office said Tuesday.

"We welcome US reaffirmation of long-standing ties with Pakistan," the PM's Office said in response to comments made by the White House on the assumption of office by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The statement added that Pakistan looks forward to deepening its "important relationship" with the United States based on the principles of equality, mutual interest, and mutual benefit.

PM Shehbaz was sworn in as the prime minister on April 11, following the successful ouster of PTI Chairman Imran Khan through a no-confidence motion — making him the first premier to be ousted through the democratic process.

The response follows White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki's statement, wherein, she said a democratic Pakistan is critical to the interests of the United States.

In a press briefing at the White House, Psaki said: "We support the peaceful upholding of constitutional democratic principles, we don't support one political party over another."

The White House press secretary said the United States "certainly" supports the principles of rule of law and equal justice under the law.

Psaki added that the US values its long-standing cooperation with Pakistan and has always viewed a prosperous and democratic Pakistan as critical to US interests — that remains unchanged regardless of who the leadership is.

In response to a question about whether Biden would call Shehbaz, Psaki said: "In terms of future calls, I don't have anything to predict at this point and time, obviously, we stay in close touch with them at a range of levels."

Since Biden assumed the US president's office in 2021, Imran Khan and Biden did not hold a telephonic conversation.

Troops effectively engaged the terrorist’s location and killed two militants. “Weapon and ammunition were also recovered from the terrorists,” it added.

The ISPR said the militants remained actively involved in terrorist activities against security forces.

During intense exchange of fire, Major Shujaat Hussain (age 30 years, resident of Toba Tek Singh) and Sepoy Imran Khan (age 27 years, resident of Naseerabad), after having fought gallantly, embraced shahadat [martyrdom], it said.

A clearance operation is being carried out to eliminate any other terrorist found in the area. “Pakistan Army is determined to eliminate menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave officers and soldiers further strengthen our resolve.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the terrorist attack in the tribal area and paid tribute to the "sons of the nation who fought against terrorists and were martyred in defence of the motherland”.

Last week, two soldiers were martyred and an officer injured during an intelligence based operation (IBO) conducted by the security forces in Singi, near Mashkai in Balochistan.

According to the ISPR, the security forces conducted an operation in the area between the night of April 7 and 8 on information of the presence of terrorists.

“During the operation, two valiant sons of soil, Naik Tajwali and Sepoy Osama embraced Shahadat while one officer got injured,” the military’s media wing said.

Apple faces extra EU antitrust charge in music streaming probe

Apple company
Apple (AAPL.O) faces an additional EU antitrust charge in the coming weeks in an investigation triggered by a complaint from Spotify (SPOT.N), a person familiar with the matter said, a sign that EU enforcers are strengthening their case against the U.S. company.

The European Commission last year accused the iPhone maker of distorting competition in the music streaming market via restrictive rules for its App Store that force developers to use its own in-app payment system and prevent them from informing users of other purchasing options.

Read more: Musk polls followers on converting Twitter HQ to homeless shelter, Bezos likes idea

Such requirements have also come under scrutiny in countries including the United States and Britain.

Extra charges set out in a so-called supplementary statement of objections are usually issued to companies when the EU competition enforcer has gathered new evidence or has modified some elements to boost its case.

The Commission declined to comment. Apple had no immediate comment.

Under new EU tech rules called the Digital Markets Act (DMA) agreed last month, such practices are illegal. However Apple and other U.S. tech giants targeted by the rules will have a couple of years before the crackdown starts.

"The DMA is still two years away. The rules will probably apply to Apple at the beginning of 2024. This is why antitrust cases remain important," said lawyer Damien Geradin at Geradin Partners, who is advising several app developers in other cases against Apple.

Companies found breaching EU antitrust rules face fines of as much as 10% of their global turnover and orders to ditch anti-competitive practices.

In addition to the music streaming investigation, Apple’s practices in e-books and its Apple Pay are also in the EU antitrust crosshairs.

Sweden’s Spotify, the largest music subscription service in the world, is one of Europe’s big global success stories in consumer technology.

Ukraine braces for fall of Mariupol, broader Russian assault on east

Russia
Russia was poised Monday to take the strategic city of Mariupol and unleash a massive offensive in eastern Ukraine, as fresh diplomatic efforts with Moscow to broker a peace offered little hope of de-escalation.

With the war grinding toward its seventh week, Austria s leader said he had raised alleged Russian atrocities as he became the first European leader to visit President Vladimir Putin since the invasion began.

Ukraine says more than 1,200 bodies have been found in devastated areas around Kyiv, with authorities pursuing "500 suspects" including Putin and other top Russian officials.

Seven bodies were found Monday under the rubble of two multi-storey buildings in Borodianka, in the Kyiv region, the state emergency service said, bringing the total to 19.

French investigators arrived in Ukraine to help probe suspected war crimes, as the European Union earmarked 2.5 million euros ($2.7 million) to the International Criminal Court for future Ukraine cases.

Russia is believed to be trying to connect occupied Crimea and Moscow-backed separatist territories Donetsk and Lugansk in Donbas and has laid siege to Mariupol, once a city of more than 400,000 people.

"Today will probably be the last battle, as the ammunition is running out," the 36th marine brigade of the Ukrainian armed forces said on Facebook.

"It is death for some of us, and captivity for the rest," the brigade added, saying it had been "pushed back" and "surrounded" by Russian troops.

Appealing to South Korea s National Assembly for military assistance, Ukraine s President Volodymyr Zelensky told lawmakers Russia had "completely destroyed" the city and "burned it to ashes".

"At least tens of thousands of Mariupol citizens must have been killed," he said. Russian forces are turning their focus to the Donbas region in the east, where Zelensky said Russian troops were preparing "even larger operations".

Ukraine braces for ‘important battles’ as Pope urges ceasefire

Ukraine
Ukraine is preparing for "important battles" against Moscow s forces in the east of the country, the president said, as Pope Francis on Sunday called for an Easter truce to end the war.

Meanwhile a strategic airport in the city of Dnipro was badly damaged in fresh shelling on Sunday.

President Volodymyr Zelensky again condemned atrocities against civilians, and after speaking with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said they had agreed "that all perpetrators of war crimes must be identified and punished".

Ukraine s prosecutor general Iryna Venediktova said the country was examining the alleged culpability of 500 leading Russian officials for thousands of war crimes, including President Vladimir Putin.

And White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan pledged the US would "work with the international community to make sure there s accountability" for what he called "mass atrocities".

Pope Francis called for an Easter ceasefire in Ukraine to pave the way for peace.

"Let the Easter truce begin. But not to provide more weapons and pick up the combat again -- no! -- a truce that will lead to peace, through real negotiation," he told a mass at Saint Peter s Square.

The pontiff denounced a war where "defenceless civilians" suffered "heinous massacres and atrocious cruelty".

But Russia s Orthodox Patriarch Kirill, a key Putin ally, issued his own appeal against Russia s "enemies".

"In this difficult period for our fatherland, may the Lord help each of us to unite, including around power," he said.

"This is how true solidarity will emerge in our people, as well as an ability to push back external and internal enemies, and to build a life with more good, truth and love."

Musk polls followers on converting Twitter HQ to homeless shelter, Bezos likes idea

Two of the world’s richest people are pitching in ideas to tackle the issue of homelessness, suggesting that Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) convert its headquarters to a shelter home.

Bezos tweeted an article by technology-focused blog GeekWire from May 2020 about Amazon’s eight-floor family homeless shelter attached to its Seattle headquarters, saying the initiative worked out great and makes it easy for employees who wish to volunteer.

Bezos also suggested converting at least a portion of Twitter’s headquarters, if not all of it, into a homeless shelter. Musk agreed in another tweet, calling it a "Great idea."

Musk, who has more than 81 million followers on Twitter, started a poll on Saturday, asking users to vote if the building should be converted. The poll gained over a million votes in less than a day, with more that 90% saying yes.

The chief executive of electric vehicle maker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), who frequently tweets about his company and other topics, has been known to leave people confused as to whether he is joking. However, Musk clarified this time he was not joking. "I’m serious about this one btw," he tweeted, following up on the topic on Sunday.

A separate poll by Musk on Sunday asked if "w" should be deleted from Twitter’s name, leaving two voting options, "yes" and "of course."

Musk had suggested a raft of changes to the Twitter Blue premium subscription service on Saturday, including reducing its price, banning advertising and giving an option to pay in the cryptocurrency dogecoin.

Resignation matter yet to be decided: Qureshi

Shah Mehmmod Qureshi
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Sunday clarified that the party has yet to decide on resigning from the National Assembly, negating fellow party leader Fawad Chaudhry's claim made hours earlier that the party's MNAs were to tender their resignations en masse on Monday.

During his appearance on a talk show, Qureshi said, "Today, the party's core committee had a meeting under Imran Khan's chairmanship."

He said that apart from finalising his name as PTI's candidate for prime minister's election opposite Shehbaz Sharif, it was also discussed if the party should remain in the National Assembly in the current circumstances.

Read more: PTI decides to resign en masse from assemblies

"There was a discussion on this issue, but a final decision was not taken. The former prime minister decided to call a meeting of the party's parliamentary committee for tomorrow at 12pm. The opinion of those who are standing by him in these tough times will be sought. A final decision will be taken after that meeting."

Chaudhry, in an afternoon press talk earlier, had announced that his party had decided to resign from the assembly, a day after former prime minister Imran Khan lost his government via a successful no-confidence move.

The decision to resign, he said, was tied up with the acceptance of PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif's nomination papers for prime minister's elections, to which the PTI had raised objections.

In a later development, the NA Secretariat rejected the objections and accepted Shehbaz's nomination.

Talking to the media in Islamabad with a host of other PTI leaders and officials, Chaudhry said a meeting of the PTI's central core executive committee (CEC) was held in Bani Gala with Imran Khan where "the whole situation was analysed".

He said the CEC recommended to Khan that the PTI should resign from the assemblies starting with the National Assembly. "If our objections on Shehbaz Sharif's [nomination] papers are not addressed then we will resign tomorrow," he said.

Elaborating on the PTI's decision to nominate its Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi for the prime minister's position after a successful vote of no-confidence against Khan, Chaudhry said that contesting the election offered the party a way to challenge Shehbaz's nomination papers.

He said it was a "great injustice" that Shehbaz would be contesting the election for the prime minister on the same day he is to be indicted in a money laundering case.

Read more: Race to PM House begins, Shehbaz, Qureshi submit nomination papers

"What can be more insulting for Pakistan that a foreign selected and foreign imported government is imposed on it and a person like Shehbaz is made its head," he rued.

It is pertinent to mention that a special court (Central-I) of the Federal Investigation Agency is likely to indict Shehbaz and son Hamza in Rs14 billion money laundering case on Monday (April 11).

Referring to the situation around the successful no-trust vote, Chaudhry said that there were no "two opinions" in the PTI's CEC meeting that it was anything other than a "very big conspiracy".

"It was a foreign regime change operation that happened here," he said. "We think this is a slap on [the face of] people of Pakistan. We reject it.

The whole nation expects leadership from Imran Khan and expects from PTI that they'll come out on streets [against] this foreign conspiracy."

On the PTI CEC and Imran Khan's behalf, he appealed to the public to come out and protest after Isha prayers in their respective district headquarters. The PTI later released a schedule of protests in several cities across the country.

Chaudhry said that if the PTI "disappointed people" now and Khan did not lead a massive movement then it would amount to a "betrayal with the country's politics and Constitution".

He said a fuller plan would be provided later and the country would move towards new elections in the next few weeks and months.

"Whoever has created this [political] crisis has engaged in enmity with the state. We think the crisis got more complicated due to the Supreme Court's decision," he said, referring to the apex court's Thursday order to restore the National Assembly and the no-confidence motion.

Referring to yesterday night's events when the Islamabad High Court and Supreme Court opened their gates late night, Chaudhry said that such activity was "immensely disliked" by the public, which was now expressing their opinion on social media about the events.

"Until we don't throw this government out and until it stays, no institution of Pakistan will have any sanctity," he added.

Questioned on the "trolling" of Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and his family, allegedly at the hands PTI supporters, Chaudhry distanced himself from such elements, saying that the party had "no control over social media".

"We can only influence our known people and can't control everyone's mind so the people who have a problem that [trolling] is being done against them on social media, kindly don't blame us."

Awami Muslim League chief, Sheikh Rashid, a key ally of the PTI, who spoke before Chaudhry, was more direct in the resignations announcement.

"It has been decided that we can't be involved with these thieves and dacoits in the assembly. Everyone decided with a unanimous consensus that we are going to resign en masse from the NA," he said. "All members will resign."

Race to PM House begins, Shehbaz, Qureshi submit nomination papers

PML-N's Shehbaz Sharif, PTI's Shah Mahmood
As the nation recovered from yesterday's long and tiring National Assembly session which saw Imran Khan lose his government, politicians went about business as usual on Sunday and submitted their nomination papers for the prime minister's election.

PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi submitted four forms with the NA Secretariat, while PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, the joint opposition's candidate for the post, filed 13 forms.

Earlier today, PTI's Kanwal Shauzab and Zain Qureshi arrived at Parliament House to collect nomination papers on Qureshi's behalf.

Speaking to the media, Shauzab said that the papers would be submitted after consulting with the party's core committee.

The NA Secretariat had initially announced that 2pm would be the deadline for submitting the nomination papers for the election of the prime minister and the leader of the house while the scrutiny process would begin at 3pm.

Earlier, the secretariat had issued a statement delaying the timing but later took it back after the opposition opposed it. According to the secretariat, the PTI had requested to delay the timings.

The NA will meet tomorrow (Monday) at 2:00pm to elect the new prime minister after PTI Chairman Imran Khan was ousted from power through a no-confidence motion filed against him by the opposition.

In a historic first for Pakistan, Imran Khan was ousted as the prime minister of Pakistan from office through a no-confidence motion after the NA debated on the matter for more than 12 hours and the political situation in the country took a critical turn Saturday night.

The session was chaired by Ayaz Sadiq — a member of the panel of chairs — after speaker Asad Qasier resigned from his post.

"174 members have recorded their votes in favour of the resolution, consequently the resolution for the vote on no-confidence against Mr Imran Khan, the prime minister of Pakistan, has been passed by a majority," Ayaz Sadiq announced after the process of voting was completed.

Once the voting was concluded and the result was announced, Opposition leaders delivered their victory speeches. Earlier, the session had been adjourned till 11am on Monday, April 11.

Speaking on the occasion, PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif said the country was witnessing a new day and thanked all the joint Opposition leaders for their efforts in uniting the parties against the government.

"We cannot thank Allah enough for allowing us to see this new day," said Shahbaz. "We thank everyone for their sacrifices, and now, once again, a Pakistan based on Constitution and law is about to come into existence," the PML-N president said, hoping that the alliance would move the country towards progress.

Shahbaz said this might be the first time in Pakistan that the country's daughters and sisters were sent to prison, but maintained that he wanted to forget the past and move forward.

"When the time comes, we will speak in detail, but we want to heal the wounds of the nation; we will not send innocent people to jails, and we will not take revenge," Shabaz said, noting that the law will take its course without interference.

"Neither I, nor Bilawal, nor will Maulana Fazlur Rehman interfere. Law will be upheld and we will respect the judiciary," Shahbaz said, thanking Sadiq for chairing the historic session.
