Police arrested Mufti Aziz ur Rehman and his son from Mianwali

 Mufti Aziz ur Rehman
Police have arrested former JUI leader Mufti Aziz ur Rehman and his son from Mianwali for their involvement in a sexual abuse case.

A video featuring Rehman went viral on social media in which he could be seen sexually abusing a seminary student.

The student had said Rehman sexually abused him, while the cleric's sons started blackmailing and threatening to kill him.

"If justice is not done, I will commit suicide," the survivor had said.

Rehman and his sons fled after police registered a case against them and conducted raids to arrest the suspects.

The superintendent of the madrassa, where Rehman worked, had said that the cleric had been fired after the video went viral.

Superintendent Asadullah Farooq had said Rehman and his sons had been asked to leave the madrassa and the institution was not responsible for any of their acts.

Meanwhile, JUI Lahore's secretary-general had also issued a notice stating that after the video, the party had suspended the membership of Mufti Rehman and that it would remain revoked till the investigation concludes.

The incident sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for the former JUI leader to be arrested.

Rehman, meanwhile, had said the video was two-and-a-half years old, and that the student was being "used against" him.

"I declare on oath that I did not do such an act in my consciousness. I was given something intoxicating and I was not conscious," he had claimed in a video message.

Ebrahim Raeisi wins presidential race by landslide

Ebrahim Raeisi wins presidential race by landslide
Ebrahim Raeisi has won Iran’s 2021 presidential election by a landslide, according to preliminary results by the Interior Ministry.

Iranian Deputy Interior Minister Jamal Orf said 28.6 million Iranians participated in the election, and with around 90% of the votes counted, Raeisi garnered over 17.8 million votes, followed by Mohsen Rezaei who secured 3.3 million.

Nasser Hemmati garnered 2.4 million votes, and Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh-Hashemi won almost one million votes.

Orf said he was not offering precise figures because vote counting was still ongoing and said he was merely providing preliminary updates.

Later in the day, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf turned up at the campaign HQ of Raeisi to congratulate him in person.

Following the meetings, the three briefed reporters on the content of their talks.
Rouhani thanked all those in charge of holding, overseeing and providing security to the election process.

The outgoing president said his team was fully ready to offer any cooperation or assistance to their successors.

Similarly, Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf said the legislative branch stood fully ready to cooperate with the president-elect’s administration.

In turn, Raeisi pledged all-out efforts to resolve the country’s problems, especially those affecting the people’s livelihoods.

To achieve that goal, he said, he would consult with the outgoing administration, the parliament, and the elites.

Raeisi has been the chief of Iran’s Judiciary since 2019. The Muslim cleric has formerly held several other posts in Iran’s judicial branch since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Raeisi is associated with the Principlist camp, but he said he ran in the election this year as an independent when he announced his presidential bid last month.

Pakistan will not provide bases to US: PM Imran

Pakistan will not provide bases to US: PM Imran
Prime Minister Imran Khan has said Pakistan would not allow the United States (US) to use its bases for cross-border military actions after American forces’ withdrawal from Afghanistan.

This he said in an interview with HBO Axios’ Jonathan Swan.

When asked if Islamabad would allow the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to conduct cross-border counter-terrorism missions in Afghanistan, he replied: “Absolutely not.”

“There’s no way we are ever going to allow,” the premier stated in clear terms. “Any bases, any sort of action from Pakistani territory into Afghanistan, absolutely not.
The United States has said it will withdrawal all its troops from Afghanistan on Sept. 11 after a two-decade presence.

In an interview earlier this month, Prime Minister Imran Khan said Pakistan was pushing for a political settlement in Afghanistan before foreign troops leave later this year, to reduce the risk of civil war in its western neighbour.

“There is a lot of fear right now in Pakistan and I assure you that we are trying our level best that there is some sort of political settlement before the Americans leave,” Prime Minister told Reuters on Friday at his official residence in Islamabad.

UN re-elects Antonio Guterres as secretary-general

Antonio Guterres
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was appointed for a second-five year-term on Friday by the 193-member UN General Assembly.

"I will give it my all to ensure the blossoming of trust between and among nations large and small, to build bridges, and to engage relentlessly in confidence building," Guterres told the General Assembly after taking the oath of office.

The 15-member Security Council earlier this month recommended the General Assembly re-appoint Guterres. His second term begins on January 1, 2022.

Guterres succeeded Ban Ki-moon in January 2017, just weeks before Donald Trump became US president. Much of Guterres' first term was focused on placating Trump, who questioned the value of the United Nations and multilateralism.

The United States is the largest UN financial contributor, responsible for 22 per cent of the regular budget and around a quarter of the peacekeeping budget. President Joe Biden, who took office in January, has started restoring funding cuts made by Trump to UN agencies and re-engaged with the world body.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the United Nations faced historic challenges, but she hoped that with Guterres at the helm, "the next five years will see more peace, more security, and more prosperity than the last."

"It will require hard work, political will, and accountability from all UN member states," she said in a statement, adding every member state should have "an impassioned commitment" to human rights.

Guterres, 72, was prime minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and head of the UN refugee agency from 2005 to 2015. As secretary-general, he has been a cheerleader for climate action, Covid-19 vaccines for all and digital cooperation.

When he took the reins as UN chief, the world body was struggling to end wars and deal with humanitarian crises in Syria and Yemen. Those conflicts are still unresolved, and Guterres is also now faced with emergencies in Myanmar and the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

Dasu Dam to usher in new era of socio-economic development: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said the construction of water reservoirs in the country is vital to meet the impending challenges of water shortage and power generation.

In his interaction with the workers, including foreign engineers, during his visit to the construction site of Dasu Dam, the prime minister expressed satisfaction over the pace of ongoing work and lauded their efforts towards completion of the project.

The prime minister said completion of the Dasu Dam will ensure cheap and clean electricity and ease the burden on consumers.

PM Khan said the project will usher in a new era of socio-economic development in the country.

He said that costly electricity triggers inflation in the country. "Our industry was growing 50 years ago when we had cheap electricity, thanks to Manga and Tarbela dams."

The prime minister added that cheap electricity will benefit industry the most.

Phase-I of the Dasu Dam will be completed by 2025 and it will start supplying 2160 megawatts to the national grid.

After completion of Phase II in 2029, the capacity of the dam will be increased to 4320 MW.

The work at the Dasu Dam has been enhanced under the government’s policy to diversify power production.

The purchase of land for the dam has been finalized and the construction is continuing in compliance with SOPs, despite the coronavirus situation.

'Dasu Hydropower project to create 8,000 jobs'

Meanwhile, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib said the first phase of 2160 MW Dasu Hydropower Project would start power generation by April 2025.

In a tweet, the minister said it would be completed in two phases and the first phase will be completed at a cost of Rs511 billion.

Some 80% of the project cost of the first phase will be borne by Wapda and the remaining 20% will be provided by the World Bank.

Farrukh Habib said the project will inject Rs12 billion units of cheap and environment-friendly power in the national grid, besides creating 8,000 jobs.

Opposition lawmakers, supporters clash with police outside Balochistan Assembly

Opposition lawmakers, supporters clash with police outside Balochistan Assembly
Chaotic scenes erupted outside Balochistan Assembly Friday as scores of protestors and Opposition lawmakers and supporters holding a protest outside the assembly were baton charged by police.

Police said Opposition lawmakers had locked all four doors of the Balochistan Assembly to prevent the budget session from taking place today.

Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Kamal Khan and a few lawmakers arrived at the assembly.

The budget session commenced under the chair of Speaker Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo. Opposition MPA Nasrullah Zehray accused the police of using violent methods to disperse the "peaceful protest" outside the assembly.

Sana Baloch, another MPA, lashed out at the government, saying that the province was at its worst state since its inception.

He said lawmakers Abdul Wahid Siddiqui and Babar Rahim Mengal had been injured by the police's armoured vehicle.

Balochistan Finance Minister Mir Zahoor Ahmad Buledi presented the budget during the session.

Earlier, the Opposition's protest and clashes intensified, as per reports, when the chief minister arrived at the assembly.

The parliament had been convened today at 4:00pm to present the budget.

Clashes erupted when police arrived to the assembly gate at the MPA Hostel when Opposition lawmakers and police exchanged heated words.

Police had managed to open the doors of the assembly so that the government lawmakers could enter for the budget session.

Opposition has proven how 'non-serious' it is: Liaquat Shahwani

Speaking to Geo News, Balochistan Information Minister Liaquat Shahwani said the clashes had proven how ill-disciplined and non-serious the Opposition was.

"Assembly is a prestigious institution and they have attacked it. The same assembly whose members these people themselves are," he said, attacking Opposition MPAs.

"They are doing this by design and deliberately," he said. "They have proven they do not follow any democratic values and to protect their personal interests, they [Opposition] are ready to go to any length."

Shahwani said if the Opposition was serious, it would have properly gone through the budget and recommended its suggestions.

"Have you heard their proposals or demands?" he asked. "This is the best budget in Pakistan's hsitory and will be presented today," he added.

He rejected reports that the Balochistan chief minister had been hit by a flower pot, adding that the Opposition supporters' act of hurling objects was "shameful".

"After this, they will not be able to even take the name of democracy ever again," he added.

Supporters of Opposition parties have blocked national highways in several cities of Balochistan over the past four days. The Opposition has accused the government of ignoring development projects in the budget.

Opposition lawmakers had warned they would not let the provincial government present the budget on Friday.

Leaders of the Opposition parties, according to Dawn, said they would not allow any MPA to enter the assembly on Friday if their proposed development projects were not included in the provincial Annual Development Programme (ADP).

Sarfaraz Ahmed and Shaheen Afridi have made up so it's time for Twitter to stop fighting

Sarfaraz Ahmed and Shaheen Afridi
Shaheen Afridi and Sarfaraz Ahmed's 'clash' on the pitch has been resolved with mutual respect and wishing each other the best and Twitter can finally rest. The two took to social media to publicly move beyond the on-field misunderstanding, a common sight in sports and competition in general.

Earlier this week, during a PSL game between the Lahore Qalandars and Quetta Gladiators, former captain Ahmed and pacer Afridi found themselves at odds. Afridi's fiery bouncer hit Ahmed's helmet and the two had a high tempered exchange at the non-striker's end. Following the incident, a debate began on social media about respect.

Some believed Afridi had nothing to be sorry for, as his delivery was a perfectly legal one and an important one in a fast bowler's handbook. Others argued that whether the delivery was legal or not, the 21-year-old should have been more respectful to his senior and once captain.

Taking to social media on Thursday, Afridi called Ahmed the pride of Pakistan, saying, "He was and will always remain a captain for me." And about the incident he added, "Whatever happened in the game that day was heat of the moment."

Reflecting on his behaviour, he said, "I should have stayed quiet in respect of him". He said he always respects his senior and wished Ahmed the best of luck.

Ahmed received the tweet with an open heart, saying, "It’s all good bro. Whatever happened on the field it should stay on the field."

Calling Afridi a "star of Pakistan," Ahmed said he was like a younger brother to him and wished him the best as well.

We're glad that all is well and this heartwarming exchange is definitely reassuring. With social media as loud as ever, it has demonstrated its ability to spread hate and create differences that weren't there and it's reassuring to see the two moving beyond all the chatter and settling their minute differences the way they should in a competition.

In a questionnaire given to him, Justice Jamal said: "At this stage of my life, there is no more meaningful way for me to contribute to the law and the pursuit of justice than through public service as a judge."

"Every judge knows what an extraordinary privilege and responsibility it is to be entrusted with the judicial role.

"Every case is consequential, even if not precedential, because it matters to the parties. I try to approach each case with an open mind and a willingness to listen, both to counsel and to my colleagues — it is always more important to listen than to speak."

Rate of inflation was high during PPP Govt: Hammad Azhar

Rate of inflation was higher during the tenure of the PPP Govt: Hammad Azhar
Reacting to Bilawal's comments, Federal Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar delivered his speech during the National Assembly session and challenged the Opposition, saying: "If they are brave enough to listen to the truth, then they should stay in the House till the end."

Mocking the way Bilawal kept switching between English and Urdu during his speech, Hammad Azhar implied that oratory skills are not enough to remove the stains of corruption from someone's character.

"Those who have never done anything to improve the country's economy and have no knowledge thereof delivered an immature speech on the government's budget and economic policies," he said.

He asked the Opposition to go through the budget documents once again and point out what taxes, as they claim, have been levied in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

Azhar said that the rate of inflation was higher during the tenure of the PPP government, adding that it was the PPP that went to the IMF more than any other government in the past.

"It looks like the Opposition is having a hard time digesting that the country has achieved a 4% growth under the rule of the PTI," said Azhar, adding that the PPP could not even achieve 1% growth during its five-year tenure.

Budget and budget session illegal: Bilawal bhutto

Budget and budget session illegal: Bilawal bhutto
Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said Friday that both the budget and the budget session of the PTI-led government are "illegal."

Speaking during a session of the National Assembly, which was being conducted under the chairmanship of National Assembly's Speaker Asad Qaiser, Bilawal said that it seems the government is playing the role of the Opposition instead of running the country.

Criticising Prime Minister Imran Khan famous rhetoric, Bilawal said that likening the country — which is being ruled by an "illegitimate government" — to the state of Madina is not appropriate.

Speaking about the budget recently presented by the PTI-led government, Bilawal said the masses are aware of the fact that "claims of 4% growth are based on lies."

"I think both this budget and the budget session are illegal," he said, adding that ever since the government has taken over, no new National Finance Commission (NFC) award has been given to provinces.

It should be noted that the NFC award is meant to distribute financial resources between the federal government and the provinces.
"Every budget will be unconstitutional until the NFC award is given," said Bilawal.

Shedding light on the growing inflation in the country, Bilawal said that the PTI government has "abandoned people and left them in a destitute condition."

He said that people will never forgive the government for further pushing them below the poverty line.

"If the budget raises petrol, gas, and electricity prices, then every Pakistani has to bear the burden of the government's incompetence," said Bilawal, adding that had there been economic growth, so many people would not be unemployed.

"The prime minister had promised to grant 10 million jobs to people, but on the contrary, even those who were previously employed have now been rendered jobless," the PPP chairman said.

Bilawal said that if the country has seen economic growth, as claimed by the PTI-led government, then why does it have to "beg before the International Monetary Fund (IMF)?"

"If the economy has significantly improved, then the government should immediately opt out of the IMF's deal," he said.

Taking a jibe at the government once again, Bilawal said that as per the economic survey, if nothing else, the population of donkeys has increased in the country, for which Prime Minister Imran Khan's policies must be lauded.

Bilawal further said that the PTI government did not even spare Azad Jammu and Kashmir and burdened the people there with the imposition of taxes.

He said that only Rs12 billion had been earmarked for the agricultural sector, which is the backbone of the economy.

"The government has abandoned the farmer community. They have not even been provided with fertiliser subsidy," said Bilawal.

A large-scale area operation by FC Balochistan South to hunt the terrorists has been launched, the statement said.

"Such cowardly acts by inimical elements, backed by anti-state forces cannot sabotage hard-earned peace and prosperity in Balochistan," stated the ISPR.

"Security forces are determined to neutralise their nefarious designs even at the cost of blood and lives," it added.

The incident takes place a little over two weeks after four FC personnel embraced martyrdom and eight others were wounded in two separate terrorist attacks in Quetta and Turbat.

In the first incident, the FC post near Pir Ismail Ziarat was targeted by terrorists, the Pakistan Army's media wing had said at the time.

"In the second incident, terrorists targeted an FC vehicle with an IED in Turbat," the ISPR said. The blast had left two FC soldiers injured, according to ISPR.

Pakistan warns India any further step on IOK could imperil region’s peace

Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri
Pakistan on Thursday warned India against taking any further steps regarding Indian-occupied Kashmir (IOK), saying it could “imperil regional peace and security”.

Addressing a weekly press briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said that India must revisit its unlawful and destabilising actions in IOK and ensure full compliance with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

He added that Pakistan would continue to resolutely oppose Indian attempts to change the demographic structure and status of IOK as a disputed territory.

The FO spokesperson said that Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had also written a letter to the president of the UNSC and the United Nations secretary general a day earlier to apprise the UN leadership of Pakistan’s concerns on these developments.

Qureshi had conveyed Pakistan’s “grave concern” to the UNSC on reports indicating that India might impose “further illegal and unilateral measures” in IOK, including “division, bifurcation and additional demographic changes in the occupied territory.”

In his press briefing today, the FO spokesperson said that the foreign minister had been regularly writing letters to the Security Council and the UN secretary general to keep the UN fully informed of the grave situation in the territory occupied by India.

He said Pakistan had also been reminding the UN Security Council of its responsibility for a peaceful and just settlement of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with the relevant UNSC resolutions.

“We remain firm in our commitment to provide all possible support to the people of IOK in their just struggle for the realisation of their inalienable right to self-determination,” the FO spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that Pakistan had deep concern over the recent reports indicating “Indian machinations for further division, bifurcation and demographic changes in the IOK to perpetuate its illegal occupation”.

“We call upon the international community, including the United Nations, international human rights and humanitarian organisations, global media and world parliaments to take immediate cognizance of the situation,” he said.

He said the IOK was an internationally recognised disputed territory, adding that India’s unilateral and illegal actions in IOK remain in violation of international law and numerous UNSC resolutions.

After three days of ruckus, Shahbaz Sharif delivers speech in NA uninterrupted

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif
Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday finally delivered his speech in the Lower House after three days of rowdy behaviour by lawmakers.

Moments before Shahbaz's speech, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak had announced that the government and Opposition had reached an agreement to run the National Assembly "in an orderly manner".

The announcement followed days of ruckus and general disorder in the lower house of Parliament as the Treasury and Opposition benches sparred over the federal budget for the 2022 fiscal year.

Speaking on the floor of the NA today, the Opposition leader said all of the lawmakers present in the assembly were elected by 220 million Pakistanis and they were responsible for changing the nation's future for the better.

There was complete silence in the house during Shehbaz Sharif’s speech, who lashed out at the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan for “ruining lives of Pakistanis”.

'Fake budget'

Shahbaz, referring to the 21 government bills that were passed on June 10, said the lawmaking done a few days ago has flaws in it.

The Opposition leader slammed the government, saying the budget was "fake", as the pockets of the poor people were "empty" and they were not able to feed their families.

"In three years, 20 million people have been pushed below the poverty line, while the growth rate has come down drastically in the last year," he said.

The wages of labourers have fallen by 18% in the last three years as people keep asking where are the promised 10 million jobs and 5 million houses, the Opposition leader said.

"The unemployment rate stands at 15% [...] Food prices have shot up by 30% in the last three years," he said.

"There are unprecedented differences between the provinces [...] If the government only develops Punjab and leaves out rest of the provinces, then this is not development," the Opposition leader said.

Shahbaz, further slamming the government, said it had devoted its energy to revenge instead of accountability. "The Opposition has been subjected to the worst kind of revenge."

PPP's Khurshid Shah, his son, and PML-N's Khawaja Asif remain behind bars till date, Shahbaz lamented.

He said when coronavirus had hit the country, the Opposition had sat down with the government to discuss a plan of action, but Prime Minister Imran Khan left the meeting.

"You had pushed us against the wall even when we tried to help you during the stressful times of coronavirus," he said.

Casting aspersions on the government's spendings, he asked that why were billions of rupees not spent on coronavirus vaccines?

"If this budget will not reduce poverty, then we condemn it, and we will not allow this house to pass it," Shahbaz said. "No nation prospers if the government destroys the agricultural and industrial sector," Shahbaz said.

The Opposition leader said Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin claims the country's economy is boosting, but despite that, wheat prices went up from Rs35 to Rs70.

Shahbaz said 1.1 million tonnes of sugar were exported with the prime minister's approval, and a subsidy worth billions of rupees was given on it.

"First sugar and wheat were exported, then they were imported — it incurred a loss of billions of rupees on the national exchequer," Shahbaz said.

'PM's seat remains empty'

Shahbaz said during the PML-N's government the International Monetary Fund's programme had been completed, but now, the progress has reversed during PTI's three years.

"The government should inform the Opposition about the conditions of the IMF," he said, as the government keeps reiterating that the international money lender had imposed harsh conditions.

The Opposition leader slammed the prime minister for not taking the house in confidence.

Shahbaz, pointing towards the prime minister's seat, said: "This seat remains empty when there is a discussion on Afghanistan; this seat remains empty when there is a discussion on Palestine and Kashmir, this seat remains empty when there is a discussion on inflation and unemployment; this seat remains empty when there is a discussion on coronavirus."

Taking a jibe at PM Imran Khan again, Shahbaz said that before his election, he stood upon a container and made tall claims about ending corruption from the country, but failed to do so.

"Today, the practice of giving and taking bribes has become rampant in Punjab [under the PTI government's rule]," he said.

Shahbaz also talked about the efforts the previous PML-N government employed to make Pakistan better and said that it was Nawaz Sharif who eliminated several problems of the country, including terrorism, electricity load shedding, and patwari culture because he had all the provinces on the same page.

What happened in NA?

On Tuesday, the NA proceedings witnessed humiliating scenes when the ministers and parliamentarians were seen creating a ruckus, using filthy language, whistling, and attacking each other with budget books during the speech of the Opposition Leader in NA Shahbaz Sharif on the federal budget.

During the uproar, one of the members from the treasury benches threw a book towards Shahbaz, which fell on the dais in front of him. The members from two sides came close to a physical brawl in front of the NA Speaker’s chair, but he could do nothing except for making requests and suspending proceedings time and again.

The security staff of the NA made a protective circle around the Opposition leader and pushed back the government members, who were trying to move towards him.

Opposition members also encircled Shahbaz Sharif to prevent him from any attack.

In the meantime, one of the security staffers, Asif Kiani, was slightly injured when a book hit him close to his eye.

A video showing Ali Nawaz Awan of the PTI abusing an opponent also went viral on social media. However, the PTI member said it was Shaikh Rohail Asghar of the PMLN who used abusive language first.

7 lawmakers banned from NA for 'disorderly conduct'

Following the incident, the NA Speaker Qaiser imposed a ban on seven lawmakers, preventing them from entering the Parliament House until further notice.

The notice said these lawmakers' conduct was “grossly disorderly” during the speech of Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif.

Three members from the ruling PTI and four opposition members — three from PML-N and one from PPP — have been found to have “violated” the rules despite the “repeated direction” of the speaker.

“Therefore, I order for withdrawal of aforesaid Members from the precincts of the National Assembly immediately. These members are required not to enter into the precincts of the Parliament House till further orders,” the statement released by the Speaker stated.

The lawmakers who are barred from the assembly include Ali Gohar Khan (PML-N), Chaudhary Hamid Hameed (PML-N), Sheikh Rohale Asghar (PML-N) Faheem Khan (PTI), Abdul Majeed Khan (PTI), Ali Nawaz Awan (PTI), and Syed Agha Rafiullah (PPP).

The action was taken after a meeting of Asad Qaiser with Prime Minister Imran Khan during which the NA situation was discussed.

On Wednesday, Shahbaz once again failed to deliver his speech in the National Assembly for the third time — despite being surrounded by sergeants-at-arms — as commotion by lawmakers continued in the house.

Shahbaz made several attempts to deliver his speech on the federal budget but did not succeed as members from the treasury benches continued to disrupt him, despite NA Speaker Asad Qaiser's repeated warnings and directives to maintain order in the house.

There were three attempts made by the speaker to conduct proceedings, with the session put into recess twice, before finally being put off for a third time in the day.

The speaker, before putting off the proceedings for the first time, said that the events that had transpired on June 15 were unfortunate and that he would not continue the session until the lawmakers sorted out their differences.

"Action has been taken against lawmakers who had used indecent language in the house on June 15 [...] a parliamentary committee will be formed to probe the matter further," he said.

The committee will comprise of six members each from the treasury and Opposition benches, the speaker announced, before he delayed the session for the first time as lawmakers continued to disrupt Shahhaz's speech.

After 15 minutes, the session resumed and Shahbaz spoke for a while, slamming Prime Minister Imran Khan for "ordering lawmakers to use indecent language" in the NA.

As he delivered his address, the treasury benches started to hurl abuses at him, with the speaker repeatedly asking them to maintain decorum in the house.

Yesterday's proceedings in the NA were one of the "darkest days" in Pakistan, Shahbaz said, adding he could not repeat the words that the members from the treasury benches had uttered.

"Mr Speaker, it was your duty to maintain order and prevent such an incident from happening [...] even today they haven't stopped," he has said.

While the PML-N president leader was speaking, an Opposition member threw a "full bottle" at the treasury benches, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar said, adding that it hit and injured Akram Cheema.

The speaker asked the sergeants to show the door to the rowdy member throwing bottles and other missiles towards Shahbaz and postponed the session.

When the session resumed for a second time, the chaos did too.

As it became apparent the uproar has no signs of letting up, the speaker postponed the proceedings for the day.

"We will not resume the session today until we arrive at an understanding on how it is we wish to proceed," he said.

Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak announced that the government and Opposition have reached an agreement to run the National Assembly 'in an orderly manner'.

Flanked by Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Khattak said during his press conference that NA Speaker Asad Qaiser had held a meeting with PTI, PPP and PML-N leaders to discuss the situation.

Khattak regretted that the ruckus in the assembly was not a good omen for the Constitution and democracy and condemned the unfortunate events in the house.

“It is the responsibility of both the Opposition and the government to maintain order in the House. We must respect each other."

Law-breaking influential people should be dealt with iron hand, PM orders police forces

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the influential people should be dealt with by iron hand for violating the laws instead of putting the weak segments inside the jails.

PM Imran Khan made the statement while inaugurating the Islamabad police’s Eagle Squad that is introduced for the federal capital’s security.

PM Imran Khan has visited the Safe City Headquarters in Islamabad where he inaugurated the new Eagle Squad of the Islamabad police comprising 100 motorcycles.

While addressing the event, the premier said that prosperity needs a peaceful environment in any society, however, peace establishment should not be misunderstood as jailing the vulnerable segments.

He ordered police forces not to deal with the weak segments by iron hand but the influential people who are involved in laws’ violations even if the violator is Imran Khan. Human society is ruled by justice and rule of law but not with the exhibition of power.

PM Khan directed police forces to independently take action against the law-breakers, however, the cops must have compassion for the weaker section of the society. The rule of law will be established by bringing the powerful people to justice.

The premier was of the view that Pakistan had been achieving its development goals until its pace was disrupted by the privileged class. If there was a rule of law, the country would have achieved milestones, said PM Khan.

“There is no holy cow in our society and all people are equal before the law.” He assured that action will be taken against all law-breakers as nobody is above the law.

Addressing the Eagle Squad, he said that an exemplary system should be established in the federal capital of Pakistan.

In January, Interior Minister Shaikh Rasheed had announced that a new Eagle Squad will be introduced soon for the federal capital Islamabad’ security and the force will be equipped with the latest technology.

The interior minister announced that the check-posts will also be modernised by the government, whereas, ‘Eagle Squad’ will be introduced soon for Islamabad’s security.

North Korea's Kim looks much thinner, causing health speculation

The health of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un
The health of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has long been a source of morbid fascination in rival South Korea, which sits in the shadow of Kim’s 1.2 million-strong army and his growing arsenal of nuclear-armed missiles.

Has he gained even more weight? Is he struggling for breath after relatively short walks? What about that cane? Why did he miss that important state anniversary?

Now, the 37-year-old faces fresh speculation in the South about his health again. But this time, it’s because he’s noticeably slimmer.

Kim’s health matters in Seoul, Washington, Tokyo and other world capitals because he hasn’t publicly anointed a successor who would control an advancing nuclear programme targeting the US and its allies if he is incapacitated. North Korea, never open about the internal workings of its leadership, has over the last year shut itself up even tighter to protect itself against the coronavirus pandemic.

In recent state media images, including those published on Wednesday, Kim appeared to have lost a large amount of weight. The strap on his fancy watch is tighter and his face thinner. Some observers say Kim — who is about five feet and 8 inches tall and has previously weighed 140 kilogrammes — may have lost about 10-20 kilogrammes.

Kim’s apparent weight loss is more likely an attempt to improve his health, rather than a sign of illness, according to Hong Min, a senior analyst at Seoul’s Korea Institute for National Unification.

“If he was experiencing health problems, he wouldn’t have come out in public to convene the plenary meeting of the Workers’ Party’s Central Committee,” a major political conference this week that is expected to last two to three days, Hong said.

Kim, known for heavy drinking and smoking, comes from a family with a history of heart problems. His father and grandfather, who ruled North Korea before him, both died of heart issues. Experts have said his weight could increase the possibility of cardiovascular diseases.

South Korea’s Ministry of Unification said it has no information to share about Kim’s health. His slimmer look has been the focus of keen interest in South Korea, with media outlets publishing photos of his previous and current appearances.

Seo Yu-Seok at the Seoul-based Institute of North Korean Studies said the North’s recent creation of the first secretary of the ruling Workers’ Party, the country's number two job, might have been related to Kim’s possible health issues. He said Kim may have allowed the post’s establishment at the urging of top officials but still hasn’t named anyone to the job because it could loosen his grip on power.

“If Kim faces a real health problem and is in a condition in which he can’t express his opinions, though he isn’t dead, who will make a decision to name the first secretary?” Seo said.

When global speculation flared about Kim’s health last year after he missed the commemoration of the birthday of his late grandfather, some analysts speculated Kim’s younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, was next in line to inherit her brother’s power. Others said a collective leadership was also possible.

Israeli airstrikes target Gaza sites, first since May 21 ceasefire

Israeli airstrikes target Gaza sites, first since May 21 ceasefire
Israeli aircraft carried out a series of airstrikes at sites in the Gaza Strip early on Wednesday, the first such raids since a shaky ceasefire ended 11 days of violence last month.

The airstrikes targeted facilities used by Hamas fighters for meetings to plan attacks, the Israeli military said, blaming the group for any act of violence emanating from Gaza. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

On Tuesday, hundreds of Israeli ultranationalists, some chanting “Death to Arabs,” paraded in east Jerusalem in a show of force that threatened to spark renewed violence. Palestinians in Gaza responded by launching incendiary balloons that caused at least 10 fires in southern Israel.

The march posed a test for Israel’s fragile new government as well as the tenuous truce that ended last month’s violence between Israel and Hamas.

Palestinians consider the march, meant to celebrate Israel’s capture of east Jerusalem in 1967, to be a provocation. Hamas called on Palestinians to “resist” the parade.

With music blaring, hundreds of Jewish nationalists gathered and moved in front of Damascus Gate. Most appeared to be young men, and many held blue and white Israeli flags as they danced and sang religious songs.

At one point, several dozen youths, jumping and waving their hands in the air, chanted: “Death to Arabs!” In another anti-Arab chant, they yelled: “May your village burn.”

In a scathing condemnation on Twitter, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said those shouting racist slogans were “a disgrace to the Israeli people,” adding: “The fact that there are radicals for whom the Israeli flag represents hatred and racism is abominable and unforgivable.”

The crowd, while boisterous, appeared to be much smaller than during last month’s parade. From the Damascus Gate, they proceeded around the Old City to the Western Wall, the holiest place where Jews can pray.

Ahead of the march, Israeli police cleared the area in front of Damascus Gate, shut down roads to traffic, ordered shops to close and sent away young Palestinian protesters.

Police said that officers arrested 17 people suspected of involvement in violence, some of whom threw rocks and attacked police, and that two police officers needed medical treatment. Palestinians said five people were hurt in clashes with police.

The parade provided an early challenge for Israel’s new prime minister, Naftali Bennett, a hardline Israeli nationalist who has promised a pragmatic approach as he presides over a delicate, diverse coalition government.

Though there were concerns the march would raise tensions, canceling it would have opened Bennett and other right-wing members of the coalition to intense criticism from those who would view it as a capitulation to Hamas.

The coalition was sworn in Sunday and includes parties from across the political spectrum, including a small Arab party.

Mansour Abbas, whose Raam party is the first Arab faction to join an Israeli coalition, said the march was “an attempt to set the region on fire for political aims”, with the intention of undermining the new government.

Abbas said the police and public security minister should have canceled the event. “I call on all sides not to be dragged into an escalation and maintain maximum restraint,” he said.

In past years, the march passed through Damascus Gate and into the heart of the Muslim Quarter, a crowded Palestinian neighbourhood with narrow streets and alleys. But police changed the route on Tuesday to avoid the Muslim Quarter.

Instead, the route went around the ancient walls of the Old City and through Jaffa Gate, a main thoroughfare for tourists, and towards the Jewish Quarter and Western Wall, the holiest site where Jews can pray.

Damascus Gate is a focal point of Palestinian life in east Jerusalem. Violence erupted in April and May during Ramazan as Palestinians were attacked by Israeli police over restrictions on public gatherings.

That violence spread to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound when Israeli police raided the mosque, a flashpoint site sacred to Jews and Muslims. Tensions at the time were further fueled by protests over the threatened eviction of dozens of Palestinian families by Jewish settlers, also in Jerusalem.

At the height of the tensions, on May 10, Israeli ultranationalists held their annual flag parade. While it was diverted from the Damascus Gate at the last minute, it was seen by Palestinians as an unwelcome celebration of Israeli control over what they view as their capital.

In the name of defending the holy city, Hamas fired long range rockets at Jerusalem, disrupting the march and sparking the 11-day violence, which claimed more than 250 Palestinian lives and killed 13 people in Israel.

Hamas had called on Palestinians to show “valiant resistance” to the march. It urged people to gather in the Old City and at the Al Aqsa Mosque to “rise up in the face of the occupier and resist it by all means to stop its crimes and arrogance”.

In the afternoon, Hamas-linked Palestinians launched some incendiary balloons from Gaza, setting off at least 10 blazes in southern Israel, according to Israel’s national fire department.

Abu Malek, one of the young men launching the balloons, called the move “an initial response” to the march.

Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh, of the internationally backed Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, called the march an “aggression against our people”.

In neighbouring Jordan, the Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the march as “unacceptable”, saying it undermined efforts to reduce friction between Israel and the Palestinians.

Israeli media reported the military was on heightened alert in the occupied West Bank and along the Gaza frontier. Batteries of Israel’s Iron Dome rocket defence system were seen deployed near the southern town of Netivot, near the Gaza border, as a precaution.

Defence Minister Benny Gantz met with the military chief of staff, the police commissioner and other senior security officials. He “underscored the need to avoid friction and protect the personal safety of [...] Jews and Arabs alike,” his office said.

Pakistan-IMF talks over sixth economic review remain inconclusive

Pakistan-IMF talks
Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) held inconclusive talks over a sixth review of the $6 billion loan programme.

Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin confirmed that the talks with the Fund over the sixth economic review remained inconclusive.

He said the government cannot put burden on the poor, adding talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would continue.

Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin said the Fund would again review Pakistan’s economic performance over next two to three months in September.

It is noteworthy that the next tranche of funding as part of the $6bn loan programme has been delayed.

In March, Pakistan received $498.7 mn as a third tranche of the $6 billion Extended Fund Facility from the International Monetary Fund.

COVID-19 therapy cuts deaths among hospitalised patients who lack antibodies

COVID-19 therapy cuts deaths among hospitalised patients who lack antibodies
Regeneron Pharmaceuticals’ COVID-19 antibody cocktail reduces deaths in hospitalised patients who have not mounted their own antibody response, a large British study published on Wednesday found.

The therapy, REGEN-COV, has been granted emergency use authorisation for people with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in the United States, but results from the RECOVERY trial provide the clearest evidence of its effectiveness among hospitalised patients.

It found that the antibody therapy reduced by a fifth the 28-day mortality of people admitted to hospital with COVID-19 whose immune system had not mounted an antibody response, known as seronegative.

The result translates into six fewer deaths for every 100 seronegative patients treated with the therapy, researchers said.

There was no discernible effect of the treatment on those who had generated natural antibody responses and were seropositive.

“People have been very, very sceptical, that any treatment against this particular virus would work by the time people get in hospital,” Martin Landray, the joint chief investigator on the trial, told reporters.

“If you haven’t raised antibodies of your own, you really would benefit from getting some,” he said.

The treatment also shortened the hospital stay of those who were seronegative and reduced their chances of needing a mechanical ventilator, Landray said.

Regeneron had previously said its treatment had shown enough promise in hospitalised patients to warrant continuing its trial. This data provides the first large-scale confirmation of that assertion.

There were 9,785 patients hospitalised with COVID-19 who were randomly allocated to receive usual care plus the antibody combination therapy or just usual care, of which 30% were seronegative.

The RECOVERY trial also showed the steroid dexamethasone and Roche’s arthritis drug Actemra (tocilizumab) cut deaths in hospitalised patients.

While those treatments focus on inflammation caused by reaction to the coronavirus, Regeneron’s therapy, which belongs to a class of biotech drugs called monoclonal antibodies, mimic natural antibodies the body produces to fight off the infection.

“This is the first time we’ve got one that’s actually targeting the virus itself,” Landray said, adding that it could be used along with the other treatments.

“It’s not that you do one thing or another thing. These benefits are additive in these patients,” he said.

Other companies have been developing similar treatments.

US emergency use authorization has been granted to antibody treatments developed by Eli Lilly and Co as well as by Vir Biotechnology with GlaxoSmithKline. Both are approved for use in mild-to-moderate cases.

On Tuesday, AstraZeneca said its antibody therapy had shown no evidence of protecting people from developing the disease following exposure, although other trials of its cocktail as a prevention or a treatment are ongoing.

Landray said the RECOVERY results should give developers of other monoclonal antibody therapies optimism that they can also be used in some hospitalised patients.

“This opens up the possibility for many, many others,” he said.

“People see a few negative trials and they say ‘well that’ll never work’ and they opt out and go off and do something else. (But) this is very, very clear, the picture that we’ve got from this trial.”

Joint Opposition to move no-confidence motion against NA Speaker Asad Qaiser

Joint Opposition to move no-confidence motion against NA Speaker Asad Qaiser
The Opposition has decided to jointly move a no-confidence motion against National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, sources said Wednesday, after two days of ruckus in the Lower House.

The development came during a meeting of Opposition party leaders in Islamabad, where they decided to form a committee that would draft a plan of action to move the no-confidence motion.

Yesterday's proceedings in the NA marked the "darkest day for democracy in Pakistan's history," the Opposition leaders observed, according to the sources.

"The Speaker has failed to fulfil his constitutional, legal, democratic, and parliamentary responsibilities [...] he is the protector of every parliament member, but [he has failed in his duties] and is not qualified to hold office anymore," they said.

The leaders demanded that a parliamentary committee be established with equal representation — from treasury and Opposition benches — to probe the ruckus that had transpired in parliament.

The action was taken after a meeting of Asad Qaiser with Prime Minister Imran Khan during which the NA situation was discussed.

National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser on Wednesday imposed a ban on seven lawmakers from entering the Parliament House whose conduct was “grossly disorderly” during the speech of Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif.

Three members from the ruling PTI and four opposition members have been found to have “violated” the rules despite the “repeated direction” of the speaker.

“Therefore, I order for withdrawal of aforesaid Members from the precincts of the National Assembly immediately. These members are required not to enter into the precincts of the Parliament House till further orders,” the statement released by the Speaker stated.

The lawmakers who are barred from the assembly include Ali Gohar Khan (PML-N), Chaudhary Hamid Hameed (PML-N), Sheikh Rohale Asghar (PML-N) Faheem Khan (PTI), Abdul Majeed Khan (PTI), Ali Nawaz Awan (PTI) and Syed Agha Rafiullah (PPP).

The action was taken after a meeting of Asad Qaiser with Prime Minister Imran Khan during which the NA situation was discussed.

The NA proceedings witnessed humiliating scenes when the ministers and parliamentarians were seen creating a ruckus, using filthy language, whistling, and attacking each other with budget books during the speech of the Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif on the federal budget.

During the uproar, one of the members from the treasury benches threw a book towards Shehbaz, which fell on the dais in front of him. The members from two sides came close to a physical brawl in front of the NA Speaker’s chair, but he could do nothing except for making requests and suspending proceedings time and again.

The security staff of the NA also made a protective circle around the Opposition leader and pushed back the government members, who were trying to move towards him.

The Opposition members also encircled Shehbaz Sharif to prevent him from any attack.

In the meantime, one of the security staffers, Asif Kiani, was slightly injured when a book hit him close to his eye.

The members from two sides were also seen hitting each other with books and using abusive language while some government members were seen standing on their seats, raising slogans, and throwing books.

A video showing Ali Nawaz Awan of the PTI abusing an opponent also went viral on social media. However, the PTI member said it was Shaikh Rohail Asghar of the PMLN who abused him first.

Speaker Asad Qaisar also took notice of the hooliganism in the National Assembly.

“The non-parliamentary attitude adopted by members from the government and the opposition benches and objectionable language used by them is condemnable and disappointing,” the speaker said.

He said following an investigation, the members who used objectionable language would not be allowed to enter the House on Wednesday.

According to sources privy to the development, Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser has summoned footage of the entire episode that took place during the assembly session a day before.

“The speaker will identify the lawmakers involved in the entire episode,” they said adding that a ban would likely be imposed on lawmakers from entering the assembly premises.

Talking to journalist, NA speaker Asad Qaiser said that the behavior of few lawmakers from opposition and treasury benches was condemnable and disappointing.

He maintained that unruly lawmakers will not be allowed to enter the Lower House of the Parliament.

The Lower House of the Parliament had been descended into chaos on Tuesday after the treasury and opposition members come to blows during Leader of the Opposition Shehbaz Sharif’s speech.

As soon as the PML-N president had started speech during post-budget 2021-22 NA session, the government and opposition lawmakers came face-to-face.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister Ali Nawaz Awan and PML-N MNA Rohail Asgar had exchanged heated words during the NA session.

In a bid to help inoculate people who need to travel abroad for education or jobs, the federal government has revised guidelines for the AstraZeneca vaccine and allowed citizens who are 18 or older to get the jab.

According to new guidelines issued by the National Ministry of Health, the vaccine shot could be given to the male aged 18 years or above, and the women above 40 years of age.

As per guidelines, people waiting to travel abroad would be given AstraZeneca jab while the government has restricted the use of AstraZeneca vaccine in people below 18 years of age.

AstraZeneca vaccine could also be administered to hypertension, sugar and patients with a heart ailment. A person who underwent an organ transplant could be administered the vaccine after three months of the surgery.

AstraZeneca required to be stored at 2 to 8 degree Centigrade temperature. The vaccine will be administered to a person in two doses. The second dose of the vaccine could be administered between four to 12 weeks after the first dose.

Earlier, in May, the Pakistani health authorities had restricted the use of Oxford for people under 40.

It is pertinent to mention here that protests had erupted across the country asking the government to allow the AstraZeneca vaccine.

A good number of overseas Pakistanis hailing from different cities staged a protest outside Islamabad’s F-9 mass vaccination centre on Monday.

The protesters demanded of the government to administer the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines to people traveling abroad on a work visa.

Pakistan has primarily used Chinese vaccines – Sinopharm, CanSinoBio and Sinovac – in its inoculation drive and, till now, only used AstraZeneca for those above 40.

Pakistan has received 1.2 million doses of AstraZeneca under the COVAX facility.

As of June 11, 1.3% of Pakistan’s 220 million people had been fully vaccinated and 3.8% had received at least one dose, mostly Sinopharm or Sinovac, official figures show.
