Wrong to expect Sharjeel Khan to turn into Shadab overnight: Babar

Pakistan team Captain Babar Azam
As controversy surrounding opener Sharjeel Khan’s selection grows, Pakistan team Captain Babar Azam has come out in support of his team mate, saying Sharjeel is in form and will be a winning addition to the Pakistan side.

In a virtual press conference in Lahore ahead of the team’s training camp for the Africa tour, Azam assured that Sharjeel was working on his fitness, adding that the management was also working with him on the issue.

“Sharjeel Khan will work on his fitness. You cannot expect him to become [as fit as] Shadab Khan overnight,” Babar said.

He pointed out that Sharjeel had been playing one-day and four-day games before he was selected and dismissed claims that his fielding was not up to the mark.

"He is a match winner. He is in form and it [his inclusion in the side] will be beneficial for Pakistan,” said Babar.

Babar’s comments come amid reports that Head Coach Misbahul Haq had expressed reservations over the batsman's selection due to his poor fitness.

During the presser, Babar also spoke about reports circulating in the media that he has had disagreements with Chief Selector Mohammad Wasim over certain players' exclusion from the squad for the Africa tour.

“There is talk of differences over selection [of players],” noted the skipper.

However, he clarified that, "There is [always a] discussion on names and it should continue," and described those discussions are "healthy debates".

He also made it clear that he was unhappy with the reports, as he believes that those conversations are supposed to be had within meetings "and should stay within those meetings".

The batsman added that the decisions he takes are for the team and not for individuals.

Speaking about the upcoming tour, Babar labelled the South Africa series as an important one. He added that the team will try to carry forward the winning momentum it gained from the recently-concluded series against South Africa in Pakistan.

The skipper said that the team will play good cricket in South Africa, saying that even though they have defeated the team recently, they will not take the challenge lightly.

On the Zimbabwe tour, Babar said that the Test series against the Chevrons is a good opportunity for young cricketers.

Pakistan is scheduled to play three ODIs and four T20Is against South Africa from April 2 onwards.

The teams will play the ODI series first, while the T20 series will start from April 10.

The tour will end on April 16, after which the Pakistan team will depart for its series against Zimbabwe.

PTI lawmaker Malik Shehzad Awan steps down after being sidelined for NA-249 ticket

PTI lawmaker Malik Shehzad Awan
PTI lawmaker Malik Shehzad Awan on Friday submitted his resignation after the ruling party snubbed him in giving ticket for the NA-249 constituency.

Awan, a PTI lawmaker in the Sindh Assembly, stepped down after submitting his resignation to Opposition leader Haleem Adil Sheikh.

He said Amjad Khan Afridi — the ruling party's candidate for NA-249, which had fallen vacant after the previously-elected Faisal Vawda stepped down following his Senate victory — was "unpopular in the constituency".

"I have to win this seat no matter what so I can gift it to Prime Minister Imran Khan," Awan said. "That's why I've submitted my resignation."

Vawda, also associated with the PTI, had won from Karachi's NA-249 constituency during the 2018 general election but stepped down after winning a seat during the Senate elections earlier this month.

According to the polling schedule for the NA-249 constituency, issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) earlier, voting would take place on April 29, 2021.

State Bank of Pakistan decides to maintain policy rate at 7%

The State Bank of Pakistan
The State Bank of Pakistan on Friday announced the policy rate will be maintained at 7% in a bid to support economic recovery.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) today, following which a statement was issued by the central bank.

The committee noted that the "current stance of monetary policy remains appropriate to support economic recovery while keeping inflation expectations well-anchored and maintaining financial stability".

SBP said that the committee reviewed the recent rise in inflation and concluded it was "primarily driven by supply side factors and saw little signs of demand led inflation".

The central bank committee expects that as this "temporary increase in inflation", that is a by-product of "administered prices" subsides, "inflation should fall to the 5-7% target range over the medium-term".

It said that in the absence of "unforeseen developments", it is expected the monetary policy settings to "remain broadly unchanged in the near term".

The MPC foresaw that as economic recovery stabilises and makes a return to full capacity possible, the policy rate in the future will be "measured and gradual to achieve mildly positive real rates".

Growth ahead

The statement said that the growth in FY21, "while still modest, at around 3% [...] is now projected to be higher than previously anticipated due to improved prospects for manufacturing and reflecting in part the monetary and fiscal stimulus provided during COVID".

Inflation ahead

The SBP further noted that "recent inflation out-turns have been volatile, with the lowest reading on headline inflation in more than two years in January 2021 followed by a sharp rise in February".

According to SBP estimates, the recent increase in electricity tariffs and sugar and wheat prices accounts for about 1½ percentage points of the 3 percentage point increase in inflation between the January and February out-turns.

"The recent increase in electricity prices will continue to manifest in headline numbers in coming months, keeping average inflation in FY21 close to the upper end of the previously announced range of 7-9%," said the statement.

Top US, Chinese diplomats clash at start of first talks of Biden presidency

Top US, Chinese diplomats clash at start of first talks of Biden presidency
The first high-level US-China talks of the Biden administration got off to a fiery start on Thursday, with both sides leveling sharp rebukes of the others’ policies in a rare public display that underscored the level of bilateral tension.

The run-up to the meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, which followed visits by US officials to allies Japan and South Korea, was marked by a flurry of moves by Washington that showed it was taking a tough stance, and blunt talk from Beijing.

Read: US, Japan warn China on ‘coercion, destabilising behaviour’

“We will [...] discuss our deep concerns with actions by China, including in Xinjiang, Hong Kong, Taiwan, cyber attacks on the United States, economic coercion of our allies,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told his Chinese counterparts in highly unusual extended back-and-forth in front of cameras.

“Each of these actions threaten the rules-based order that maintains global stability,” he said.

The Biden administration has made clear that it is looking for a change in behavior from China, which has expressed hope to reset relations that had worsened drastically under former US president Donald Trump.

China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi responded with a 15-minute speech in Chinese while the US side awaited translation, lashing out about what he said was the United States’ struggling democracy, poor treatment of minorities, and criticising its foreign and trade policies.

“The US uses its military force and financial hegemony to carry out long arm jurisdiction and suppress other countries,” said Yang.

“It abuses so-called notions of national security to obstruct normal trade exchanges, and incite some countries to attack China,” he added.

Throughout Yang’s monologue, US National Security Adviser Sullivan and other officials in the delegation passed notes to each other. At the end, Blinken held journalists in the room so he could respond.

What is typically a few minutes of opening remarks in front of journalists for such high-level meetings lasted for more than an hour, and the two delegations tussled about when media would be ushered out of the room.

Afterwards, the US accused China of “grandstanding” while Chinese state media blamed US officials for speaking too long and being “inhospitable”.

Both sides accused the other of violating diplomatic protocol, with a US official saying the two had initially agreed two minutes of opening statements by each of the principals.

“The Chinese delegation [...] seems to have arrived intent on grandstanding, focused on public theatrics and dramatics over substance,” the official told reporters at the Anchorage hotel where the meeting was taking place.

“Exaggerated diplomatic presentations often are aimed at a domestic audience,” the official added.

Many netizens on China’s social media said Chinese officials were doing a good job in Alaska, and that the US side had shown zero sincerity.

Some even characterised the talks as a “Hongmen Banquet”, a historical event that took place 2,000 years ago where a rebel leader invited another to a feast with the intention of murdering him.

Still, the two sides reconvened for another meeting on Thursday evening, and a senior Biden administration official said that the first session was “substantive, serious, and direct,” running well beyond the two hours originally allotted.

“We used the session, just as we had planned, to outline our interests and priorities, and we heard the same from our Chinese counterparts,” the official said in the pool report, adding that a third session of talks was scheduled for Friday morning.

While much of Biden’s China policy is still being formulated, including how to handle the tariffs on Chinese goods implemented under Trump, his administration has so far placed a stronger emphasis on democratic values and allegations of human rights abuses by China.

China firmly opposes US interference in what it regards as its internal affairs, issues such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang.

Washington says Blinken’s Asia tour before the meeting with Chinese officials, as well as US outreach to Europe, India and other partners, shows how the United States has strengthened its hand to confront China since Biden took office in January.

But the two sides appeared primed to agree on very little at the talks.

Even the status of the meeting became a sticking point, with China insisting it is a “strategic dialogue”, harkening back to bilateral mechanisms of years past. The US side rejected that, calling it a one-off session.

On the eve of the talks, the US issued a flurry of actions directed at China, including a move to begin revoking Chinese telecoms licences, subpoenas to multiple Chinese information technology companies over national security concerns, and updated sanctions on China over a rollback of democracy in Hong Kong.

Adding to tensions, China on Friday tried a Canadian citizen on espionage charges, in a case embroiled in a wider diplomatic spat between Washington and Beijing.

At the talks on Thursday, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi questioned Blinken about whether the sanctions were announced ahead of the meeting on purpose.

Washington has said it is willing to work with China when it is in US interests, citing climate policy and the coronavirus pandemic as examples.

Blinken said Washington hoped to see China use its influence with North Korea to persuade it to give up its nuclear weapons.

Bonnie Glaser, an Asia expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said tough statements from both sides in the run-up to the meeting had created a risk that it would devolve into an exchange of accusations and demands.

“Neither side benefits from this meeting being judged a total failure,” Glaser said.

China offers vaccine to UN peacekeepers

China offers vaccine to UN peacekeepers
China's Permanent Representative to the UN Zhang Jun informed UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday that China will donate 300,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to United Nations peacekeepers, with priority given to peacekeeping missions in Africa.

The Chinese Permanent Mission to the UN said that China is fulfilling its promise to make its vaccines a global public good and contribute to vaccine availability in developing countries.

The mission said in a statement that the move is another step toward making China's vaccines a global public good. It also demonstrates China's firm and continuous support to the UN and multilateralism.

"As one of the champions of (the) safety and security issue under the "Action for peacekeeping" (A4P) initiative of the UN Secretary-General, China attaches great importance to the safety and security of peacekeepers, and supports early COVID-19 vaccination for UN peacekeepers to protect their health and help them better perform their duties," it added.

The mission said the Chinese government will work closely with the UN Secretariat to make vaccines donated by China available to the peacekeepers at an early date.

The fight against the COVID-19 pandemic is the most pressing task facing the world today, and vaccines are the most powerful weapon to win the battle, the mission said.

The mission stressed that China attaches great importance to the equitable distribution of vaccines, especially the accessibility and affordability in developing countries.

As of Monday, China had provided vaccine assistance to 69 countries and two international organizations. It also has exported vaccines to 28 countries, the mission noted, adding, "more and more countries and people are benefiting from China's vaccines".

"China will continue to work in solidarity with countries around the world to make unremitting efforts to win the final victory of the global fight against the pandemic," the mission added.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced China's decision to donate vaccines to peacekeepers during a Security Council meeting on Feb 17.

According to data from the UN, as of Jan 31, there were 85,782 UN peacekeepers comprising military, police and civilians, serving in 12 peacekeeping operations, six of those in Africa. More than 71,000 peacekeepers are deployed to the continent.

According to the UN, 2,465 Chinese troops and police are currently serving in UN peace operations.

China's armed forces have sent more than 40,000 peacekeepers to 25 UN peacekeeping missions over the past 30 years, China said in a white paper it released in September on the participation of the country's armed forces in UN peacekeeping operations.

China also has been a strong supporter of global vaccine distribution, shipping large number of its vaccines to countries such as Mexico, Hungary, Congo, Bahrain and Chile.

Mexico turned to China to fill a vaccine shortfall with an order of 22 million doses. Mexican officials made the decision a week after the Biden administration turned down its request to share the American vaccines with Mexico in the short term.

In the Middle East, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were among the first countries to approve the Chinese vaccine.

The UAE conducted a clinical trial with 31,000 participants on Sinopharm and announced that the vaccine was 86 percent effective in a phase-three trial.

Agriculture sector is still using outdated and inefficient methods: PM Imran

Agriculture sector is still using outdated and inefficient methods: PM Imran
Pakistan needs wealth creation projects to pay off foreign debt and save money for education, Prime Minister Imran Khan stressed on Friday.

Addressing a ceremony in Malakand, Prime Minister Khan said Lahore’s Ravi City and Bundal Island projects will lead to wealth creation. The projects initiated by the construction industry and two dams being built after 50 years will also help create wealth, he added.
He pointed out that the government is building houses for low-income people in Pakistan for the first time.

The prime minister said tourism alone can fetch huge revenue that can cut external deficit. “Swat witnessed an unprecedented number of tourists over the last two years. If tourism picks up, people of Pakistan won’t have to go abroad [in search of greener pastures]. Malaysia generates a whopping $20 billion through tourism, and Turkey $40 billion,” the prime minister highlighted.

Switzerland that earns $60 billion through tourism can’t even match the beauty Pakistan has been bestowed with, he said.

Unfortunately, PM Khan lamented, the country’s agriculture sector is still using outdated and inefficient methods. “We are going to bring in a new agriculture policy next week that will alone lift the country,” he disclosed.

Putin replies to Biden ‘killer’ comment

Russian President Vladimir Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday mocked US President Joe Biden over his “killer” comment but said that Moscow would not sever ties with Washington over the spat.

Speaking at an event marking seven years since Russia’s takeover of Crimea, Putin said Moscow would continue working with Washington but aimed a barb at the US leader.

“It takes one to know one,” Putin said in televised remarks, using a saying from his childhood.

“That’s not just a children’s saying and a joke. There’s a deep psychological meaning in this.

“We always see in another person our own qualities and think that he is the same as us.”

Putin added that he wished Biden, 78, good health. “I’m saying this without irony, not as a joke.”

In an interview with ABC News on Wednesday, when asked if he thought Putin, who has been accused of ordering the poisoning of opposition figure Alexei Navalny, is “a killer”, Biden said: “I do.”

The US president’s remarks sparked the biggest crisis in bilateral relations in years, and later Wednesday Russia ordered its Washington ambassador back to Moscow for urgent consultations in an unprecedented move in recent diplomatic history.

Putin said the United States was “the only country in the world that used nuclear weapons”.

Russia, he added, knows how to “defend its interests” and will work with Washington on terms that are “beneficial” for Moscow.

“And they’ll have to deal with it.”

The PDM had an important meeting on Tuesday after which the alliance announced it had decided to postpone its anti-government long march, which was scheduled to begin March 26.

Nine parties of the PDM had given their approval to resigning from the Parliament but the PPP had objected to the move. The party sought time from the alliance and said it would make up its mind in a meeting of its Central Executive Committee. The meeting has been called in the first week of April.

Sources said the two leaders spoke over the phone and agreed to continue the PDM alliance.

In letter to NA speaker, PM Imran Khan urges formation of committee for electoral reforms

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday penned a letter to National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser asking him to form an electoral reform committee in a bid to bring transparency to the elections.

"The recent Senate elections have highlighted once again the scourge of vote purchasing in the prevailing non-transparent manner of conducting elections," the premier said in the letter.

The premier, in the letter, highlighted that the treasury bench had submitted a bill for "meaningful electoral reforms to remove the prevailing stigma attached to our electoral process".

"I would request you to immediately form an inter-party parliamentary committee to discuss these reforms and come to an agreement on how to introduce best practices including the use of technology and introduction of EVMs (electronic voting machines) to strengthen our electoral system and democracy," he said.

The premier said the task should be completed in a definitive time frame so that enough time is given to the relevant institution to bring reforms before the next general election.

"In the context of the Senate, my party and I asked for open ballots to ensure transparency and fairness given how Senate elections had achieved notoriety as being a major market for the purchase of votes," he said.

The prime minister highlighted that the government had moved the Supreme Court in this regard and the judiciary directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure transparent, fair, and free elections and stated that secrecy of the ballot was not absolute”.

"Unfortunately, the ECP paid no heed to the SC judgment and failed to carry out fair and free Senate elections," he lamented.

"The malaise of our prevailing electoral system including but not limited to the free flow of money to purchase votes has been the subject of critique after all elections with the losers declaring the results to have been rigged," he said.

PM Imran Khan said the practice had begun to destroy the entire "credibility of all elections in Pakistan" casting a shadow of doubt over our entire democratic process as well as the functioning of our parliamentary system.

"It is in the interest of democracy in Pakistan to establish a credible and transparent electoral system and put an end to all venues that allow for corrupt practices that are eroding our parliamentary democracy," the premier said.

Food security, climate change part of national security: PM Imran Khan

Food security, climate change part of national security: PM Imran Khan
Any country could be secure only when all people believe in its government and own their country. The army alone can’t secure a country,” Prime Minister Imran Khan said while addressing the inauguration ceremony of Islamabad Security Dialogue on Wednesday.

“The national security means that the entire nation stands and has a stake to save the country,” the premier said.
“We see the national security from just one point that is the more we will strengthen our security forces and army, the more secure we will be. But, now we are realising that the national security is about things that no-one ever thought of in the past such as climate change,” the prime minister said.

“Climate change is something that can overshadow all given Pakistan’s vulnerability to it,” he pointed out. “I am proud that our government took action over this,” he added.

Prime Minister Khan lauded the country’s security forces for rendering sacrifices post-9/11 saga to secure Pakistan.

Touching upon food security, he said it is another big issue. “We imported four billion tonnes of wheat in a year for the first time,” he pointed out. Given the growing population, he announced that the government will bring in a comprehensive plan to address the food security issue in Pakistan.

The prime minister said that the government is working towards eradication of poverty like China did and pulled 700 million people out of poverty in 35 years.

About the Kashmir issue, he said the resolution of the longstanding dispute will not only benefit Pakistan but India too. “When we came to power, we tried hard to improve ties with India but the August 5 move of revocation of Kashmir’s special status dealt a blow to these efforts.”

NAB Summons Maryam Nawaz in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case

NAB Summons Maryam Nawaz in Chaudhry Sugar Mills case
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has once again summoned PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz for questioning in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case.

Daughter of deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been asked to turn up at the NAB Lahore office on March 26. They said she will be quizzed in light of the new evidence the bureau has received.

The sources said the PML-N leader faces charges of alleged involvement in money laundering.

The national graft buster had summoned Maryam last year in August but cancelled her hearing after clash erupted between PML-N supporters and the police personnel outside the bureau’s Lahore office ahead of her arrival there.

It is noteworthy that the NAB has also moved a petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking cancellation of her bail in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case for not cooperating with the NAB in its investigation against her.

A two-member bench of the LHC comprising Justice Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Asjad Giral heard the plea and issued a notice to Maryam to file her response to the bail cancellation plea by next hearing.

Zardari apologises to Maryam over remarks about Nawaz in PDM meeting

PPP President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz
PPP President Asif Ali Zardari apologised to PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday during a meeting of the Pakistan Democratic Movement.

The meeting of the opposition alliance had been convened to discuss the contentious issue of mass resignations from assemblies. During the meeting, Zardari spoke at length to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif via videoconferencing and urged him to return to Pakistan if he is ready to wage a war against the government.

According to PPP sources, Zardari later apologised to Maryam, to which Maryam responded by saying: "It was never my intent to have you apologise. I merely considered myself a daughter to you and complained like Bakhtawar or Aseefa would."

Maryam had said that her father's "life is in danger" and questioned how he can return under the circumstances.

She had asked: "Does Zardari sahab guarantee that my father's life will not be in danger in Pakistan?"

Maryam then reportedly said that she is in Pakistan "of her own accord".

"Just like you are on video link, so is Mian sahab," she added.

She said that Nawaz's life is "threatened under NAB's custody" and that he had had "two heart attacks while in jail".

The PML-N vice president, according to sources, said that her party, despite being the "largest in Pakistan" had supported PDM. She said PML-N had followed all decisions made by the platform and even aided in their implementation.

"The entire PML-N voted for Yousuf Raza Gillani (in the Senate elections)," Maryam said.

She said that when PPP expressed their opposition to resignations, PML-N supported them to avoid any differences in opinion.

Maryam said she had witnessed her father going to 150 appearances before National Accountability Bureau and recalled how she had been arrested in front of her father.

"My father left my mother on her death bed and came back to Pakistan," she added.

Maryam later said that they must let bygones be bygones and bury the matter.

PDM puts off long march as PPP seeks time to respond on resignations

PDM leadership
The Pakistan Democratic Movement's long march scheduled for March 26 has been postponed amid a difference of opinion on the issue of resignations from assemblies alongside the protest.

A meeting of senior leaders of the PDM was held on Tuesday, after which Maulana Fazlur Rehman briefed the media on the outcome of deliberations held between the opposition parties.

Fazlur Rehman said that the main bone of contention between the alliance, the matter of a long march alongside mass resignations from assemblies, was discussed today.

He said that PPP expressed their reservations over the two being linked and have sought time to respond.

"They will hold a meeting of the Central Executive Committee and will get back to us," he said.

"Until then, the long march must be considered postponed," he said.

The PDM chief then abruptly left the gathering, leaving PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz to address the conference, flanked by PPP's Yousaf Raza Gillani.

Maryam said that she does not wish for speculations to rise so will not be speaking about the time sought by PPP.

She spoke, however, of PPP President Asif Ali Zardari's remarks whereby he had asked Nawaz Sharif to return to Pakistan and reportedly said to him that the party's resignations will only be handed in when he comes back.

Maryam denied such an exchange having taken place, saying: "No, that is not what he said. He simply said that Mian sahab you must come back and so must everyone else so we can struggle together."

She said to this, she responded "very respectfully" by saying that Nawaz's return to Pakistan "would be tantamount to handing his life over to killers which neither do the PML-N leaders want or the party's vote bank".

"And neither do the people of Pakistan want this because the people invest in their leaders. People want leaders who are alive and well," she said.

Maryam said that since she is much younger than the PPP president, she very respectfully added that "Mian sahab's struggle and sacrifices are known to everyone and in this brutal and vengeful tenure of the incumbent government he spent the longest and harshest sentence in jail".

She said that "even while knowing that it is revenge" he left his ailing wife behind in London and came back with his daughter to Pakistan to face a jail term "in a false case".

"He bravely served time in jail, even suffered heart attacks but bore them courageously. The government began to panic when his life was in danger and they sent him abroad.

"But now that he is abroad and is not fully well, as a daughter, I believe no one has the right to call him back. I do not think that after God's mercy, when his life has been spared, it should be handed back to these killers," Maryam said.

She said that the "government will be dissolved, InshaAllah" and insisted a "united PDM" stands before the media.

Maryam said that although Nawaz is abroad, his party is the most active in the country. "The entire party is united under his leadership, standing firm and fighting. I am Nawaz Sharif's representative. Whosoever wishes to speak to him must first speak with me," she added.

Gillani, taking over the briefing, said that he and his party had thanked everyone for the support during the Senate elections, in which he had defeated government-backed candidate Abdul Hafeez Shaik for the general seat from Islamabad.

He said the March 26 long march had been "bracketed with the resignations" over which PPP has simply sought some time to consult the Central Executive Committee, as it had originally expressed reservations against the move.

Gillani said the PPP had said to PDM: "If you want us to hand in resignations, give us some time. We will go back to the CEC, take their approval and get back to you."

He said that the CEC has previously expressed the view that the opposition's move should come from the parliament.

"Under the new scenario, the PDM leadership has unanimously told the PPP to approach the CEC," Gillani said.

He added that the decision will be announced "soon".

Speaking of the opposition's decision to challenge the Senate chairman elections due to seven votes cast in his favour being rejected by the presiding officer, Gillani said that "he himself said go to the courts".

"We will go to the courts, we will get relief and we get the chairmanship and it will be a victory for all of PDM," he said.

If you are ready for war, you must come back to Pakistan: Zardari to Nawaz

PPP President and co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif
PPP President and co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari held a long video conference with PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday, in which according to sources, the PPP leader urged the PML-N leader to come back to Pakistan.

"Nawaz Sharif sahab, if you are prepared to fight a war, you will have to return to your country," sources within the PPP quoted Zardari as saying.

"If we all are out to fight, then we must all be prepared to go to jail," Zardari further said to Nawaz.

The conversation between the two leaders was held during a meeting of the Pakistan Democratic Movement.

The PDM leaders are sitting together in the federal capital to review the political situation in the country after the recently-held Senate polls and by-elections, which, according to them, have shaken the ruling party.

The contentious point of the agenda is the resignation from assemblies which has put the PPP at loggerheads with PML-N and the JUI-F who had been calling to resign from the parliament since December. The PPP, however, has been convincing them to opt for an in-house change and use the resignation strategy as a “last resort”.

According to the sources, Zardari told Nawaz that "whether it is the long march or a no-confidence motion, you will have to come to Pakistan".

"I am ready for war but my domicile is different [...] Mian sahab, you represent Punjab" sources further quoted Zardari as saying.

Zardari also discussed at length the measures he took during his presidency, the sources said.

"I gave powers to the parliament and approved the NFC (National Finance Commission Award) for which my party and I were punished," he said.

Zardari said the PPP "is ready to fight until its last breath", also citing how he had spent 14 years of his life in jail.

The PPP leader also reportedly questioned how Nawaz plans on solving the people's problems.

"You never increased people's wages in your tenure, whereas I increased them," sources quoted Zardari as telling Nawaz.

Speaking of resignations from the assemblies, Zardari said that the move is tantamount to "strengthening Imran Khan's position".

The PPP co-chairman also said that no decision that sets the parties off on divergent paths must be made.

"Any differences between us will only serve the interests of those who are enemies of democracy," he said.

Zardari, according to sources, said: "We do not fight from the mountains. We fight from within the parliament."

The sources said that the PPP leader told the PML-N surpremo: "Mian sahab if you want en masse resignations then not only us, everyone will have to go to jail."

According to PPP sources, Zardari said that it is "not the first time that democratic forces have witnessed rigging".

"We mobilised the entire nation when Benazir returned to Pakistan in 1986 and then in 2007," Zardari said, according to sources.

The long march will have to be organised in the same manner as our preparations in 1986 and 2007, he said.

"The struggle against the establishment must carry on for democratic stability," he added.

Zardari urged Nawaz to return to Pakistan along with Ishaq Dar. "We will then all fight together," he said.

He said that while the other Opposition parties contested the Senate elections, Ishaq Dar did not even come to cast his vote.

"When you return to Pakistan, we will hand over our resignations to you," Zardari added.

Sources said that amid all the insistence by the PPP co-chairman for Nawaz to return, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz said that her father's "life is in danger" and questioned how he can return under the circumstances.

Sources said that she asked: "Does Zardari sahab guarantee that my father's life will not be in danger in Pakistan?"

Zardari apologises

According to PPP sources, Zardari later apologised to Maryam, to which Maryam responded by saying: "It was never my intent to have you apologise. I merely considered myself as a daughter to you and complained like Bakhtawar or Aseefa would."

Maryam said she had witnessed her father going to 150 appearances before National Accountability Bureau and recalled how she had been arrested in front of her father.

"My father left my mother on her death bed and came back to Pakistan," she said.

Govt asks ECP members to resign after 'losing confidence of the people'

Govt asks ECP members to resign after 'losing confidence of the people'
The government on Monday called upon the members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to resign, saying the body had "completely failed" in making this month's Senate elections transparent.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, federal education minister Shafqat Mehmood said despite evidence of horse-trading, the ECP had failed to ensure the Senate polls were held transparently, with the result that all political parties were unhappy with the commission.

In such a scenario, "there is no option other than the Election Commission cannot continue functioning in its current state. ECP [members] should resign en masse," said Mehmood, who was accompanied by Information Minister Shibli Faraz and Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry.

"Everybody is criticising [the ECP]. Is there anyone who's saying the election was conducted properly?" the minister asked. He said this reinforced Prime Minister Imran Khan's stance that a manner should be adopted to end the buying and selling of votes in order to make the elections transparent.

He said the premier had always advocated for the use of open ballot in the Senate elections, while the PTI was the only party that took action against its members who had allegedly sold their votes in the 2018 polls for the upper house.

Ahead of the 2021 Senate elections, he said, the government introduced a constitutional amendment bill and filed a reference in the Supreme Court seeking advice on open ballot. "The Supreme Court decision was exactly in accordance with the situation. They said a constitutional amendment is necessary to change the mode of voting," he added.

But Mehmood said the SC had also stated that it was the ECP's responsibility to conduct free and fair elections that were not marred by corruption.

He recalled that the PTI subsequently approached the ECP with a request that it make ballots traceable while maintaining their secrecy in light of the SC decision. "But sadly it was rejected [and] a committee was formed to take the measure in future elections," he said.

According to the minister, it was due to the ECP's lack of action that "corrupt practices" took place in the election on the Senate general seat from Islamabad — which opposition candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani won despite the government having a majority in the National Assembly.

Mehmood said all political parties, including the ruling PTI, had lost confidence in the ECP.

He emphasised that the current ECP could not continue if the political parties and people of the country did not have confidence in it or saw its decisions with suspicion. After the current members' resignation, he said, new ECP members should be appointed under whom the commission would conduct transparent elections.

"We want the ECP to play the role of a neutral umpire, which it is not doing," he said, adding that although the Supreme Court had given an "opportunity" to the ECP which it could have utilised and taken measures to make the Senate polls fair, the body did not do so and "hurt our democracy".

"Therefore, the chief election commissioner and his members should resign [...] so that the parliament gets the chance to form a new ECP which everyone trusts."

Answering a question, Mehmood said the demand for resignation was a "political response", and the government had no intention of filing a reference in this regard.

The ECP and the PTI-led government have been on a collision course since before the Senate elections, after the commission decided to hold the March 3 polls through secret ballot due to what it called "time constraints".

After key PTI candidate Hafeez Shaikh suffered defeat in the election, Prime Minister Imran Khan in a televised address to the nation accused the ECP of "damaging democracy" and criticised the body over use of secret ballot for polling.

Responding to the premier, the ECP chided the PTI for being upset over the election result and asked the party's leadership to stop mudslinging against institutions and accept its defeat.

However, the government upped the ante against the commission, with members of the prime minister’s cabinet saying at a press conference that the ECP should not be “saddened” but “ashamed” at having allegedly failed to hold fair and transparent Senate elections.

PDM's Tuesday meeting to make it clear where parties stand on resignations: Maryam

PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz
The leaders of the Opposition parties' anti-government coalition under the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) banner have called a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the resignations issue, PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz has said.

Speaking to the media here in Lahore on Monday, Maryam Nawaz said tomorrow's meeting would make it clear where the Opposition parties stood on the resignations. "We will try to persuade those who do not agree to resigning," she added.

"Today's meeting was chaired by [PML-N Supremo] Nawaz Sharif and Hamza [Shehbaz] and other leaders from Lahore participated" in it as well, she said.

The PML-N leader noted that it was very "encouraging" that the people had responded to "our calls" for justice. "Pakistan will move towards a better future," she added.

"The PDM is a coalition of 10 parties and remains united on a larger agenda," she said, noting that her party, the PML-N, stood for principle and was together under Nawaz Sharif's leadership.

"Tomorrow's meeting will see what strategy the PML-N has to adopt," she added. "The hope is that all PDM parties will understand the sensitivity of the situation."

Separately, in her speech, she also lambasted the PTI regime for its "attempt at the worst rigging [during the Senate election]", which she said the entire Pakistan witnessed and "rejected".

The government, however, launched attacks at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) instead of apologising to it, she noted.

"If the PTI government did not get votes in the election, then what's the ECP's fault? Pakistan has now understood what it means to criticise and attack the institutions," she said.

Former prime minister and key PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi also criticised the PTI's representatives, saying their "ministers are trained to lie on TV".

"Today, the entire cabinet attacked the ECP and said the ECP should resign. The government and Imran Khan were sour over their defeat," Abbasi said.

"Instead of apologising to the Election Commission of Pakistan, the entire Cabinet launched an attack on it. Every day, they attack someone and lie. If there is a risk to their jobs, maybe they should leave.

"When the vote is not respected, rulers like Imran Khan will come. We are talking about 'vote ko izzat dou' [respecting the vote]," the former premier added, using the PML-N's chant for fair and transparent polls.

Earlier in the day, she had criticised the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for being "a slave to order" and how it has been commanded to arrest the incumbent regime's political opponents.

Maryam asked who gave the NAB the authority to check her speeches and comments. The anti-graft watchdog, she explained, had recommended her bail be cancelled during a hearing at the Lahore High Court (LHC) because she was giving public statements.

"The NAB is an institution of revenge," she opined, adding that the body lied to the court about her not cooperating in the investigation. "I was kept in detention for three months and asked about books and invitations.

The PTI had approached the electoral body after videos emerged in which Gillani's son, Ali Haider Gilani, was recorded telling PTI lawmakers how to discard their votes just before the March 3 polls.

Further recordings had suggested that money and other incentives were also offered in exchange for votes.

The Opposition's candidate, Yousaf Raza Gillani, had defeated the government's nominee for the seat on March 3, triggering a strong reaction from the government.

PM Imran Khan openly accused the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) of using money to influence the Senate election.

Pakistan's President Dr Arif Alvi and his wife, Samina Alvi, on Monday got vaccinated against COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, at a vaccination centre here in the federal capital's Tarlai area.

President Arif Alvi also spoke on the occasion, saying vaccines were being administered according to age in Pakistan. "The elites around the world broke the lines and got themselves vaccinated," he said, according to the President House's Twitter account.

The president advised the nation to continue ahead with caution despite receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. "Please continue wearing masks, wash your hands, and keep your distance in view of the third wave of the coronavirus," he stated.

He also lauded the PTI regime's efforts and strategies in light of the pandemic, saying the government's smart lockdown policy "reduced economic losses".

Pakistan records 2,253 coronavirus cases, 29 deaths in a day
Pakistan has recorded 29 more coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 13,537, reported on Monday.

According to the latest statistics of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the COVID-19 has claimed 29 more lives and 2,253 fresh infections were reported during the said period.

The total count of active cases is 22,038 and the positivity rate increases up to 5.11 per cent.

In the past 24 hours, as many as 1,307 patients have recovered from the virus in a day and 1,823 patients are still in critical condition.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), with the fresh inclusion of the infections in the country the national tally of cases now currently stands at 607,453.

A total of 44,061 tests were conducted across the country during this period. Overall 571,878 people have recovered from the deadly disease so far while 9,529,763 samples have been tested thus far.

Earlier on Sunday, keeping in view the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) had hinted at imposing a complete lockdown in the provinces.

Expressing concerns over the rising number of coronavirus-related deaths and fresh cases in KP and Punjab, the NCOC had urged the masses to strictly follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to stem the spread of the virus. Coronavirus situation rapidly worsening in the provinces, warned the NCOC.

Earlier on March 13, Federal Minister for Planning and Development and National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) head Asad Umar had said that government may have to opt for another lockdown in parts of the country if there was a continued increase in coronavirus cases.

After Senate success, govt asks opposition to come to the table for electoral reforms

Information Minister Shibli Faraz and Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry
After securing the two top Senate slots of chairman and deputy chairman, the government on Sunday offered the opposition to hold talks on electoral reforms for future elections, on the condition that it accepts the PTI-led government's mandate to govern for five years.

Information Minister Shibli Faraz and Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry extended the olive branch to the opposition while addressing a press conference in Islamabad. Chaudhry invited the opposition to sit down and have talks pertaining to "big reforms" such as electoral reforms.

"We want to make future elections fair and transparent," the minister said. He said National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser was ready to form committees on the issue while Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan were already working on the matter.

"Our law ministry, parliamentary division and [NA] Speaker Secretariat are all ready to talk, discuss and take the matter forward but it is important for this that you move forward while accepting the government's mandate," Chaudhry told the opposition.

He said clause 21 of the Charter of Democracy signed by the leaders of the PPP and the PML-N maintained that the signatory parties would respect the mandate of any incoming government to govern for the duration of its term.

Chaudhry pointed out that Prime Minister Imran Khan himself had invited the opposition to come and talk on reforms during his last speech in the parliament.

Friday's elections for the Senate chairman and deputy chairman offices were marred by controversy as seven votes apparently cast in favour of the opposition Pakistan Democratic Movement's (PDM) joint candidate, Yousuf Raza Gilani, were rejected.

If the seven rejected votes were added to Gilani's tally, his total would have amounted to 49 — one more than PTI-backed Sadiq Sanjrani's. While announcing the results, presiding officer Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah said the seven votes were rejected because the stamp was placed on Gilani's name, which he ruled was against the instructions.

The PPP has said it will file a petition to challenge the result before a high court in the coming week.

Chaudhry during the presser stressed that the PTI was a democratic and federal party which is why it was urging the opposition to have the dialogue, however, "there is just one thing on which there can be no negotiations — and that is the cases against your leadership."

"All the fingers being raised at the Senate [chairman and deputy chairman] elections at this time are being raised because of the opposition's role and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) failing to perform its role," Chaudhry said, adding that the opposition only had itself to blame for the results.

He said the government had persistently tried to bring about the amendment for open balloting in the Senate polls yet the opposition had "changed [its] principle and went towards secret elections".

"Today we see the political parties which lost this election are making the noise. If elections were open today and in front of everyone, we wouldn't have had to face such difficulties," he added.

'Cancel the long march'

Emphasising that there was an opportunity today to set things right, Chaudhry asked the opposition leaders not to let their politics be controlled by "political novices".

"Bilawal [Bhutto-Zardari] and Maryam [Nawaz] have no experience of Pakistan's politics. The senior leadership in these parties should take policymaking in their hands and decide in the interest of Pakistan."

The minister also called upon the opposition to cancel its planned long march to Islamabad, saying Pakistan had been "fortunate" to protect its economy during the Covid-19 pandemic and the government wanted to take this forward. He further said a long march would contravene the aforementioned clause 21 of the CoD.

He alleged that the PPP which was once called "the chain of the four provinces" had been reduced to a regional party and now its members had "the gall to besmirch the decided principles of Benazir Bhutto".

Chaudhry also praised the National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) move to seek Maryam's bail cancellation in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. He said the government wanted NAB to pursue cases to their "logical conclusion" otherwise "people [would] think the stance of accountability is being defeated".

The information minister, meanwhile, claimed that cracks were already starting to appear in the opposition ranks after the Senate elections. "This election has proved that the PML-N has stabbed PPP in the back and the PPP has stabbed Maulana Fazlur Rehman [in the back]," Faraz added.

He said after the defeat of the opposition candidates for Senate chairman and deputy chairman, different stances and opinions were beginning to emerge with Rehman calling for resignations and the PPP proposing a different strategy.

"The PML-N, [meanwhile,] has adopted such a stance within its own party and alliance [that] it is not finding any support, so its last nail has been hammered".

Covid-19 vaccination progress

While giving a progress update on Pakistan's coronavirus vaccination campaign, Faraz singled out Punjab for praise for how it was conducting the drive.

He said the Punjab campaign was proceeding in a very "splendid" and "organised" way, which the other provinces should try to imitate and adopt.

Talking about the current surge in coronavirus cases in Pakistan, Faraz stressed the importance of following Covid-19 standard operating procedures and precautions to tackle the third wave.

Chaudhry, meanwhile, lamented Pakistan's lack of focus and investment in research, science and technology which he said was the reason for it lagging behind India in vaccine development and research. He said the PTI government had realised this and increased the budget for science and technology by "10 times".
