Pakistan continues battle against uptick in COVID-19 numbers as Omicron spreads

Pakistan continues battle against uptick in COVID-19 numbers as Omicron spreads
Pakistan's active COVID-19 case count stayed over the 100,000 mark for the second consecutive day, National Command and Operation Centre's (NCOC) data showed Sunday morning, as the country's positivity rate is again on the rise after a slight decline.

The stats issued by the NCOC suggested that 7,978 new infections were detected overnight after 64,016 diagnostic tests were conducted across Pakistan.

The new cases pushed the countrywide positivity ratio to 12.46% and the current number of active cases stand at 100,005.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases reported so far jumped to 1,417,991.

The first time Pakistan's active case count crossed the hundred thousand mark was on Saturday, when the country logged 104,095 cases, as per the NCOC. However, the tally was lowered as 12,019 patients suffering from COVID-19 recuperated overnight.

Meanwhile, 29 patients succumbed to coronavirus during the last 24 hours, taking the country's COVID-19 death toll to 29,248.

The NCOC has extended coronavirus curbs in the country from January 31 till February 15, as thousands continue to contract the infection amid a spread of the Omicron variant.

The NCOC had imposed non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) on January 19, which were to be reviewed on January 27 in light of the COVID-19 situation in the country.

The restrictions for the wedding sector were already imposed till Feb 15.

WHO's Asia-Pacific chief probed over racism, misconduct

world health organization
World Health Organisation head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Saturday announced an investigation into a "senior staff" member, the UN agency's Western Pacific chief, over claims of racism and misconduct.

"We have been aware of some concerns since late 2021 and have been following due process. With the cooperation of the staff member, an investigation process is underway," Tedros said on the final day of the WHO's executive council meeting in Geneva.

The WHO chief didn't say when the enquiry opened, adding that "there is a limit to what we can say at this time".

However, Tedros added that "we take these allegations seriously".

The serious accusations, detailed in an email seen by AFP after the affair was revealed on Thursday by the Associated Press, target the head of the agency's Western Pacific region Japanese doctor Takeshi Kasai, who has already said he is ready to cooperate in any investigation.

According to AP, dozens of WHO staff members filed an internal complaint in October before sending an email in mid-January to the countries on the UN agency's executive board.

In the email, they accused Kasai of "authoritarian and racist leadership" adding that he had regularly shared privileged information with the Japanese Foreign Ministry, of not wanting to criticise China and of having "wasted" donor money.

Many countries expressed their concerns over the matter earlier this week.

On Saturday, several diplomats again called on the WHO to investigate all allegations of misconduct.

"We take all allegations seriously and expect that independent investigations will be progressed as a matter of priority," an Australian representative said Saturday.

A British representative said: "once again we regret to have heard of this first in the media".

A Norwegian official said "we need a WHO that we all trust, member states as well as staff, beneficiaries and the global community. This includes creating an organizational culture that promotes good ethics and builds trust within the organization and having solid systems in place to enable this".

The investigation comes at a time when the WHO is already under great pressure.

The UN health agency has been under intense pressure to make far-reaching changes following revelations in 2020 of widespread sexual abuse by humanitarian workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On Friday the World Health Organization's main donor countries demanded that it speeds up and broadens reforms aimed at preventing sexual abuse by staff in the field.

Islamophobia is unacceptable, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday said that Islamophobia is not acceptable at any cost and vowed to make his country safer for Muslims.

Taking to Twitter, the Canadian premier wrote: "Islamophobia is unacceptable. Full stop. We need to put an end to this hate and make our communities safer for Muslim Canadians. To help with that, we intend to appoint a Special Representative on combatting Islamophobia."

the Canadian Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Ahmed Hussen highlighted the federal government’s intention to appoint a special representative on combatting Islamophobia, saying that "this appointment will be part of a renewed Government of Canada Anti-Racism Strategy," a statement issued by the Government of Canada said.

Last year, the Canadian government had announced its intention to make January 29 a National Day of Remembrance of the Québec City Mosque Attack and Action against Islamophobia.

"This year, on the eve of the five-year anniversary of this act of terror, the Government of Canada stands with and supports Muslim communities across Canada and reaffirms its commitment to take action to denounce and tackle Islamophobia and hate-fueled violence," the statement said.

Islamophobia is a concrete and daily reality for Muslim communities across Canada and around the world, it read, adding that "As we honour the victims, we must remember that we have a responsibility to combat discrimination and continue to build a more inclusive Canada."

"That is why the federal government held a virtual National Summit on Islamophobia in July 2021. The special representative appointment is one of the recommendations put forward during the Summit and will be an additional step in the government’s ongoing work through Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy to tackle Islamophobia in all its forms."

It further added that confronting Islamophobia is an important part of the aforementioned strategy as it includes a whole-of-government approach to tackling systemic racism with dedicated knowledge and expertise through the Federal Anti-Racism Secretariat, as well as investments to empower communities to combat different forms of racism, including Islamophobia, and to advance digital and civic literacy initiatives that address online disinformation and hate speech.

"We are committed to renewing the Anti-Racism Strategy in 2022 with a National Action Plan to expand our efforts to combat hate and racism."

Details on the role and mandate of the special representative will be confirmed at a later date, the statement said.

iPhone users can now use Face ID feature with mask on

iphone
People who have been using Face ID to unlock their iPhones before the COVID-19 pandemic faced the hassle to remove their masks and then unlocking the phones.

But now, since the pandemic is not showing signs of going away anytime soon and masks have become an essential "accessory" for people across the globe, Apple has added a new feature in iOS 15.4 (currently in beta) which has the ability to use Face ID even when someone is wearing a mask.

However, Apple suggests using a full-face scan because it's a lot more secure than the new mask Face ID update. But even then, it is an excellent solution to the "new normal" lifestyle.

An iOS update would be needed if you don't have iOS 15.4. By following simple three steps, you can access the "mask on Face ID feature," the report said.

1. Open the Settings.

2. Tap on Face ID & Passcode, then you’ll have to enter your passcode to access this menu.

3. Scroll down to Use Face ID With a Mask and toggle it on.

Your face will be scanned by the feature twice, focusing on the lower part of the face where you put on a mask. You do not have to wear a mask during this additional setup process, but the scanner acts as if you are.

This new feature doesn't apply any restrictions on you to be able to unlock your phone in any way, with or without a mask you can access your phone.

PIA scheduled to fly out Pakistani Hindu pilgrims to India

pia
The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was scheduled to fly out Pakistani Hindu pilgrims to India tomorrow (Saturday), but it has yet to receive a green signal for the flight, citing sources.

Sources within the national flag carrier said that a special flight was set to carry 160 Hindu pilgrims from Karachi to Jaipur, India, at 7am on January 29. They said that PIA officials have confirmed that India has not allowed the flight a passage.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Hindu Council (PHC) notified "postponement" of the flights that were meant to carry the pilgrims to India.

A statement issued by the PHC on Friday stated that on PHC's request seeking passage for three flights — from Karachi to Jaipur on January 29, from Jaipur to Agra on the same day, and from Delhi to Karachi on Feb 1, — PIA had approached the civil aviation department of India for permission and necessary arrangements, but received no response from the other side by Thursday.

Hence, furthering this process is now impossible, it added.

The PHC, however, made it clear that neither itself or PIA is responsible for calling off the trip. Instead, "the client [Indian authorities] lagged behind" in making the trip possible for Pakistani Hindu pilgrims, it added.

It said that the trip is being postponed till the Pakistani authorities receive India's permission to airlift the pilgrims.

MQM worker succumbed to cardiac arrest, not police torture: Saeed Ghani

Sindh Information and Labour Minister Saeed Ghani
Sindh Information and Labour Minister Saeed Ghani on Thursday said that MQM-P's worker died due to cardiac arrest a day ago and not because of police torture as portrayed by the party.

"Although an unpleasant incident took place outside the Chief Minister House the previous day, the police was left with no option but to take action against the protesters for the sake of prestige and dignity of the country that was at stake for rest of the world," Ghani said.

Speaking during a press conference at the Sindh Assembly’s committee room, the minister said that a "well-thought-out plan had been behind the unpleasant incident of the previous day to create negative repercussions for the international players participating in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches."

He said that MQM-P had the "plan to spread ethnic divide in Karachi and the recent statements of their leaders were a testament to this fact."

He informed the media that MQM-P had earlier announced to start a protest rally from Shahrah-e-Faisal and move towards the Karachi Press Club to hold a demonstration there, adding that the Opposition party had been in touch with the city’s administration with regard to their plan.

Ghani also said that the city’s administration kept on facilitating the movement of the protest rally from Shahrah-e-Faisal to the Metropole intersection where it reached at 4pm. Later, it decided to move towards the Press Club as per the original protest plan. However, the participants of the rally abruptly decided to move towards the CM House instead," Ghani said.

The PPP leader said the deputy commissioner of the district south and other senior police officials informed the MQM-P leaders Wasim Akhtar and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui that the area in the surroundings of the CM House had been declared a high-security zone owing to the presence of international cricket players lodging in the nearby hotels.

"The administration advised the leaders of MQM-P to stick to their original protest plan and go to the Press Club for staging the demonstration," he said.

He also said that the rally’s participants didn’t pay heed to the advice of the administration as they crossed the obstacles at the Metropole and reached outside the CM House.

“What other option was then available to us as a PSL team present in the vicinity had to come outside of the hotel and go for practice but players didn’t go anywhere due to the resultant situation,” Ghani added.

He said the incident that happened outside the CM House "was, indeed, unpleasant as it didn’t bode well for the Sindh government."

During the press conference, Ghani said that the provincial government had to ensure the security of the area around CM House, given the presence of international players in the nearby hotels as the image of the country for the outside world was at stake.

He also recalled the statement of Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed that the overall law and order situation of the country was not satisfactory.

The Information Minister said the police — as a last resort — had to take the action to disperse the protestors, adding that the "MPA of MQM-P, Sadaqat Hussain, along with fellow party members used sticks to beat the policemen."

"It was imperative that the police should have honourably treated the woman protesters but MQM-P is in the habit of using female followers of the party and children as its shield on such occasions," he said.

'Worker died due to cardia arrest'

Talking about the deceased activist of MQM-P, Aslam, Ghani said: "He had died due to cardiac arrest as police torture didn’t result in his death."

The PPP stalwart added that Aslam was first taken by his family to the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases and later he was taken to NICVD where doctors pronounced him dead.

He said that Aslam should have been taken to the nearby Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre or Civil Hospital had he sustained injuries outside CM House.

Ghani appealed to the bereaved family of the MQM-P’s worker to allow a post-mortem examination of his body to determine the exact cause of his death.

He also told the media that the PPP had decided to postpone its upcoming sit-in protest outside Karachi Press Club on January 30 due to the sensitive security situation of the city owing to the PSL matches.

IATA wants countries to remove travel curbs for fully vaccinated passengers

IATA wants countries to remove travel curbs for fully vaccinated passengers
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged governments around the world to employ their two years of Covid-handling experience to do away with travel restrictions, which it said were "a mess".

Calling for the adoption of "unique solutions" to manage global travel, IATA Director General Willie Walsh, in a statement on Tuesday, urged governments to accelerate the relaxation of travel restrictions for fully vaccinated passengers with a WHO-approved vaccine as Covid-19 continued to evolve from the "pandemic to endemic stage".

Walsh said it was the need of the hour to remove all travel barriers, including quarantine and testing, for fully vaccinated individuals as "with the experience of the Omicron variant, there is no mounting scientific evidence and opinion opposing the targeting of travellers with restrictions and country bans to control the spread of Covid-19."

"These measures have not worked. Today Omicron is present in all parts of the world. That’s why travel, with very few exceptions, does not increase the risk to general populations," he said.

The IATA chief said an amount running into billions spent on testing travellers would be far more effective if it was allocated to vaccine distribution or strengthening health care systems.

"All indications point to Covid-19 becoming an endemic condition — one that humankind now has the tools (including vaccination and therapeutics) to live and travel with, bolstered by growing population immunity," the statement said.

Walsh said it was important that governments and the travel industry were well prepared for the transition and ready to remove the burden of measures that disrupted travel.

He said there seemed to be more unique solutions to managing travel and Covid-19 than there were countries to travel to.

"Indeed research from the Migration Policy Institute has counted more than 100,000 travel measures around the world that create complexity for passengers, airlines and governments to manage," he pointed out.

He said all countries now had at least two years of experience to be guided on a simplified and coordinated path to normalise travel "when Covid-19 is endemic".

"That normality must recognise that travellers, with very few exceptions, will present no greater risk than exists in the general population. And that’s why travellers should not be subject to any greater restrictions than are applied to the general community,” said Walsh.

The IATA emphasised that mutually recognised policies on vaccination would be critical as the world approached the "endemic phase".

"Barrier-free travel is a potent incentive for vaccination. The sustainability of this incentive must not be compromised by vaccine policies that complicate travel or divert vaccine resources from where they can do the most good."

Opposition would face "defeat and humiliation" when it marches to Islamabad on March 23: Sheikh Rasheed

Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed
Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed said Wednesday the Opposition would face "defeat and humiliation" when it marches to Islamabad on March 23, as he assured them the government would not create hurdles for them if they follow the law.

Despite persistent persuasion by the government, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) had on Tuesday decided to continue with the long march against rising inflation on March 23 (Pakistan Day).

Addressing an event in Pindi, the interior minister said due to security measures on the occasion of Pakistan Day and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers Council's presence in the capital, mobile phone services might be suspended as well.

"What is your agenda? Why are you marching towards Islamabad?" the interior minister asked the Opposition, as he reiterated that they would face no resistance from the government.

The interior minister said the Opposition has already faced defeat in Parliament, and now it will also face "political defeat on the roads".

Rasheed said the Opposition had not been able to make any headway in its bid to oust the government in the last three-and-a-half years, and it could not do anything in future as well.

"The only thing they have done is give irresponsible statements against Imran Khan. The public did not come out on the streets in the last 3.5 years, and they will not come out now," he said.

Rasheed said PM Imran Khan was "an honest man", who had a good relationship with the "establishment".

He warned the Opposition that the prime minister would indeed be "very dangerous" if he were to take to the streets against it. "I say this with authority: Imran Khan has street power."

Previous governments never thought about relief of people: PM Imran

Previous governments never thought about relief of people: PM Imran
Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Wednesday has said the previous governments had never thought about the relief of the people and that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is the only party to provide health related facilities to the general masses.

While addressing the inaugural ceremony of Naya Pakistan Qaumi Sehat Card scheme, the premier said that those who looted country’s money are undergoing medical treatment abroad.

The entire family is sitting in London for treatment, he added.

PM told that the under this Sehat Card, every family will be able to avail healthcare facilities up to one million rupees in a year. Pakistan is the only country in the world to introduce such a unique ambitious program for providing free health facility to its citizens, he asserted.

Imran Khan said that the poverty-stricken people are facing problems in medical treatment due to lack of enough money.

Health issues create economic problems for the people and our vision behind this scheme is to at least relieve them of the economic suffering when they get ill, he went on to say.

The premier further said that Rs450 billion has been utilized for health insurance purpose, adding, courage and determination needed to take such steps.

He said when people own their country, only then the country achieves the ideal of national security but when people are deprived of their basic needs how would they think of the nation and national interest.

It is to be mentioned here that Under the scheme, all families of Islamabad, Punjab, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan and Tharparkar will be provided free medical treatment at government and private hospitals.

TI is the proof of ineffective system of Pakistan: Shehbaz Sharif

TI is the proof of ineffective system of Pakistan: Shehbaz Sharif
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and Opposition Leader in National Assembly (NA) Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday has said that the report of Transparency International (TI) is the proof of ineffective system of Pakistan.

In a statement, the PML-N leader said we should take the TI report seriously as it clearly shows that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has only committed corruption during its tenure.

This report is asking us to make reforms and devise productive policies, he added.

Shehbaz Sharif further advised Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan and his ministers to better overcome corruption instead of hiding it.

It merits mention that Pakistan slipped by 16 points on the international Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) and stood at 140th position in comparison to 124th position in 2020.

The Berlin-based non-profit releases the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) every year, ranking 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and business people.

Pakistan lost 16 positions in 2021 compared to 2020 and 20 positions compared to 2019. In 2020, Pakistan ranked 124th on the global corruption list and 120 in 2019.

Black Day: Kashmiris observe India's Republic Day with protests

Black Day: Kashmiris observe India's Republic Day with protests
People of Jammu & Kashmir living on both sides of the line of control and rest of the world are observing the Indian Republic Day as black day today (Wednesday). This protest is meant to invite the attention of international community towards the 75-year long unlawful Indian occupation of Jammu & Kashmir which deprives them of their internationally recognized right of self determination.

The day will be marked with a complete shutdown in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Kashmiris observe the Indian Republic day as black day every year to protest against the continued long Indian subjugation of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. It also intends to bring into focus brutalities and custodial killings of the innocent Kashmiris and the unabated violations of human rights by the Indian occupying forces in the held state.

This year, too, Kashmiris are observing the Indian republic day as black day as the hardliner PM Modi-led Indian government continues violating all international norms and commitments by scrapping special status of the internationally-acknowledged disputed status of the Jammu Kashmir. It may be mentioned here that the article 370 and article 35-A of India’s constitution were revoked on August 5, 2019 after which at least one million military and para military troops were deployed in Indian-occupied Jammu Kashmir.

The black day is also aimed at apprising the world community of the continued hostile attitude of India denying Kashmiris their legitimate right to self determination and deviating all international norms escaping from the peaceful solution of the much delayed Kashmir issue.

In Azad Jammu & Kashmir protest rallies and demonstrations against illegal Indian occupation will be the hallmark of the black day in all ten districts of the liberated territory.

Major rally to observe the Indian Republic Day will be held in Muzaffarabad in which AJK leaders of various political parties including those in the AJK Parliament will participate.

The day will also mark complete solidarity with the freedom-loving people of Indian occupied Jammu Kashmir in their just and principled struggle for freedom and for the achievement of their legitimate right to self determination.

The protest rallies are scheduled to be arranged by various social, political and public representative organizations from all spheres of life including lawyers, journalists, members of the business community, laborers, students, women and social and political workers.

In Mirpur, a protest rally will be held at Shaheed Chowk followed by a big procession of people belonging to all segments of the civil society. The city elders representing various segments of the civil society will also highlight the importance of early peaceful settlement of the Kashmir problem besides expressing concerns about India and its unlawful and forced occupation of Jammu Kashmir for the past 75 years.

Fawad demands live broadcast of Sharif family's corruption cases

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry
Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry has urged courts to conduct a speedy trial of corruption cases against the Sharif family and allow live telecast of case proceedings.

“We want Shehbaz Sharif’s case to be aired live... so that people should be made aware of the [details] of the case, the federal minister said while addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Monday.

He also requested the chief justices of the courts to live telecast the hearings of the corruption cases against the Sharif family to enable the public to decide whether the former rulers were involved in any wrongdoing or not.

Fawad accused the Shehbaz and former premier Nawaz Sharif of plundering national wealth worth billions of rupees.

The PML-N leaders claimed that Pakistani law is not applicable to their sons who are residing in London when asked to explain the sources of their wealth, he added.

The information minister also maintained that the courts should announce the verdict in corruption cases without any “fear or influence”.

He said it was made clear that Nawaz attempted to influence court proceedings through former G-B judge Rana Shamim's affidavit.

“This is a fit case to implicit Nawaz in Rana Shamim case for attempting to influence court proceedings,” he added.

Fawad further said that the PTI inherited the country following a “decade of darkness”, and put it on the right track.

“Today we have achieved 5.37% economic growth despite the challenge of Covid-19 and today the entire world is following Pakistan’s strategy to [control the pandemic],” he said while referring to the government’s decision of not imposing complete lockdown during the peak of the contagious virus.

He said the income of the masses has also increased during the PTI’s rule amid skyrocketing inflation and added that “agriculture and corporate sector have earned record profits”.

He also urged private businesses to increase the salaries of their employees.

Istanbul airport shuts as snow blankets southeast Europe

Istanbul airport shuts as snow blankets southeast Europe
Europe's busiest airport shut down in Istanbul while schools and vaccination centres closed in Athens as a rare snowstorm blanketed swathes of the eastern Mediterranean region, causing blackouts and traffic havoc.

The closure of Istanbul Airport affected flights stretching from the Middle East and Africa to Europe and Asia.

Travel officials told AFP it marked the gleaming glass-and-steel structure's first shutdown since it replaced Istanbul's old Ataturk Airport as the new hub for Turkish Airlines in 2019.

The winter's first snow created a jovial atmosphere across the squares of Istanbul's ancient mosques, where children built snowmen and tourists posed for selfies.

But it dealt a major headache for the 16 million residents of Turkey's largest city, which ground to an effective halt.

The main highway leading to the capital Ankara briefly closed to traffic over the weekend because of fog and heavy snow.

The Istanbul governor's office warned drivers they would not be able to enter the city from Thrace — a region stretching across the European part of Turkey to its western border with Bulgaria and Greece.

Traffic officials also closed roads across large parts of central and southeastern Turkey, a mountainous region first hit by a snowstorm last week.

Istanbul Airport serviced more than 37 million passengers last year, becoming one of the world's most important air hubs.

But critics of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had long questioned his decision to place the airport on a remote patch along the Black Sea coast that is often covered with fog in the winter.

"Due to adverse conditions, all flights have been temporarily stopped for air safety," the airport said in a statement.

Officials said flights would be suspended until at least 6:00 pm (1500 GMT), with delays expected throughout the night.

'Everything is frozen'

Most of Turkey's main institutions stayed opened on Monday.

But in Turkey's Aegean Sea neighbour Greece, where overnight temperatures plummeted to -14 degrees Celsius (6.8 degrees Fahrenheit), the storm suspended a session of parliament and forced schools and vaccination centres to close in Athens.

Thousands of motorists were trapped in their cars around Athens — many of them venting their anger on TV stations — despite attempts by police to seal off motorway entry points in the northern part of the capital.

"My wife has had nothing to eat since morning. We had a small bottle of water between us," one driver who identified himself only as Christos told private Star TV.

Kamran Akmal test positive for COVID-19: PCB

Kamran Akmal
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that Peshawar Zalmi’s Kamran Akmal and Arshad Iqbal have tested positive for COVID-19 and are replaced by players from the reserves pool.

Both the players underwent PCR tests at the time of check-in at the team hotel for Pakistan Super League (PSL) on January 21 and 22, respectively.

According to a statement issued by Peshawar Zalmi, they are replaced by Imam-ul-Haq and Ammad Butt for the PSL matches.

The replacement, according to the PCB, will be temporary and the replaced players can re-integrate into the squad after completing isolation and receiving negative PCR results.

Imam-ul-Haq was not part of the initial 15 players announced for the reserved pool but came in along with Omair Bin Yousuf after Salman Ali Agha and Musadiq Ahmed were unavailable to join the pool.

While the PCB has not announced the reasons for these two players’ unavailability from the reserves pool, the sources say that Musadiq wasn’t in Pakistan while Salman was unavailable due to medical reasons.

The PCB has further added that each side will be allowed a maximum of 20 players at any given time and the player replaced will be allowed to rejoin the side but will require the event technical committee’s approval.

The seventh edition of PSL will start on January 27 and Peshawar Zalmi will start its campaign on January 28 with a match against Quetta Gladiators.

PTI's former information secretary to file lawsuit against termination from party

the PTI had expelled Jawad
Former central information secretary of PTI Ahmed Jawad on Sunday announced that he will file a lawsuit against the party for terminating his membership.

the PTI had expelled Jawad from the party for "violating the party's constitution" on social media and "slandering" senior leadership.

Talking to Geo News, Jawad said that his termination from the party’s membership is "illegal," adding that, “PTI voters and workers have seen the true colours of Imran Khan now."

The ex-PTI member said that in the last 74 years, "no one ha deceived the nation like PTI did, while overseas Pakistanis were used like Automated Teller Machines (ATM)."

It is worth mentioning here that Jawad had criticised the policies of the ruling party.

Taking to his Twitter account, he had said that he will reveal the reasons why he stayed quiet for so long on the "fascism and incompetence of PTI," asking followers to "stay tuned".

He further asked Prime Minister Imran Khan: “How did your illegal Bani Gala house and Constitution Avenue flat become legal? Can't the houses of the poor be regularised like Constitution Avenue was regularised?"

Subsequently, the PTI expelled the former secretary of information for "violating the party's constitution" on social media.

According to a statement issued by the PTI’s Standing Committee on Accountability and Discipline (SCAD) on January 12, a show-cause was served to Ahmad asking him to explain his position within seven days of the receipt of the notice but the disgruntled leader did not respond to the notice.

After receiving the second show-cause notice, Jawad sent a reply, which was received by the SCAD on January 21; however, he did not explain his position, rather admitted that he had issued more than 40 tweets while SCAD took notice of only two of his tweets.

“The Sub Committee of the SCAD observed that there were different forums in the party for Jawad to express his feelings/narrative before the party while he used social, electronic media to get his objective [to] malign/slander the party senior leadership, causing severe damage to the party,” the statement read.

The sub-committee after analysing the facts of the case and reading Jawad's reply found him "committing a severe violation of the party constitution". Hence, it "unanimously decided to strike down the party membership of Ahmad Jawad from the party membership register”.

Do not punish Afghans for Taliban’s mistakes: UN chief

UN Secretary General António Guterres
UN Secretary General António Guterres has pledged to continue his ‘discreet diplomacy’ for resolving the Afghan crisis, repeating his appeal for a conditional release of Afghanistan’s frozen funds.

The United States froze nearly $7 billion of Afghan assets in the New York Federal Reserve soon after the Taliban captured Kabul in August 2021. Since then, organizations and individuals in both the United States and Europe have been urging Washington to unfreeze the funds.

On Thursday, the US House of Representatives recommended a focused release of humanitarian funds to address the imminent economic and humanitarian disasters facing the people of Afghanistan.

Last month, 40 US lawmakers urged Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen to release humanitarian aid to prevent an economic collapse in Afghanistan.

But the strongest appeal came from the UN chief who warned that a “nightmare (is) unfolding in Afghanistan” and the world was “in a race against time to help the Afghan people.”

“Babies being sold to feed their siblings. Freezing health facilities overflowing with malnourished children. People burning their possessions to keep warm. Livelihoods across the country have been lost,” Mr Guterres said.

At a Friday afternoon news briefing in New York, a journalist reminded the UN chief that the situation in Afghanistan had further deteriorated and asked him if he were willing to “pick up the phone and talk to the Taliban” to make them do the reforms needed to end the country’s economic blockade. “First of all, it is clear that we have in Afghanistan a serious situation of violations of human rights, and (the conditions for ending the blockade were) not yet met.”

That’s why, he said, the United Nations has “been in constant advocacy with the Taliban to say that it is absolutely essential for them in the context of their objective of recognition but also in the context of their objective of getting international support for their own people.”

Mr Guterres, however, repeated his appeal for not linking the Taliban’s failure with the humanitarian crisis. “Humanitarian aid and the need to avoid … the economic collapse in Afghanistan is something that we have been fighting for, because the people of Afghanistan [are] in an absolute desperate situation,” he said.

“It would be a mistake to submit the people of Afghanistan to a collective punishment just because the de facto authorities are not behaving properly.”

Underlining the need to “separate the two things,” he said: “We will go on with our humanitarian action. We will go on insisting on the need to have liquidity, allowing for the economy not to collapse, for the people not to be in an absolute desperate situation.”

But the United Nations will also “go on insisting with the Taliban on human rights but also on the question of terrorism and on the question of inclusive governance,” he added.

Responding to the suggestion to pick up the phone and call the Taliban, he said: “I intend to go on doing discreet diplomacy, doing active public diplomacy, and speaking out when I believe this is the best way to solve the problems we face.”

A day earlier, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) had revised COVID-19 protocols for mosques and announced that only fully vaccinated people will be allowed to pray inside the places of worship.

The body leading Pakistan's COVID-19 response also announced on Friday that all schools with a high COVID-19 positivity ratio would remain closed for one week across the country.

On January 21, the NCOC had decided to shut down all schools with a high COVID-19 positivity ratio for one week across the country to curb the new variant, Omicron.

A notification issued by the NCOC had said that all the educational institutions, premises, sections, specific classes with high positivity will be closed for one week.

"Provincial administration, in consultation with district health, education authorities, and school administrations, is to set a threshold of cases for deciding such closures," the notification had added.

The NCOC had added that COVID testing in educational institutes was carried out in major Omicron-hit cities to ascertain disease spread among students and ensure accurate disease mapping.

Therefore, keeping in view the results, the NCOC had taken the following decisions:

• Aggressive testing in education institutes for next two weeks especially in high disease prevalence cities.

• Federating units to carry out special vaccination drives in schools to ensure 100% vaccination of students over 12 years of age.
