Accidents at Chinese coal mines leave two dead, 12 missing

Accidents at Chinese coal mines leave two dead, 12 missing
After two separate accidents at coal mines in China, two people died and 12 were missing, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Saturday.

The two deaths took place at a mine run by Henan Hebi Coal and Electricity Co late on Friday, prompting authorities in the central province of Henan to launch an emergency response plan, CCTV said.

It did not give details about the cause of the accident, which left six people missing.

Last month, Henan's provincial government said it had approved the reopening of another mine operated by Hebi after it was shut for breaching regulations.

In the north of the country, another six people were reported missing on Saturday after an accident at a coal mining plant in Heilongjiang province, the broadcaster said later.

China has been carrying out safety inspections at coal mines across the country as record high coal prices encourage miners to ramp up production to meet supply gaps.

In May, China's cabinet said it would work to stabilise rising commodity prices, while encouraging coal producers to boost production to meet global demand.

PM calls on developed world to support countries vulnerable to climate change

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday called on the developed world to support those countries vulnerable to climate change and highlighted Pakistan's contributions towards tackling global warming.

The premier was addressing a ceremony in Islamabad to mark World Environment Day. This year, Pakistan is hosting World Environment Day in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme.

"Pakistan's contribution to global warming and climate change is minimal. Rich countries, which contribute significantly more, have a greater responsibility to provide funds to ones like ours so that we can fight climate change," he said.

The premier said that Pakistan was left with very little money to address climate issues, highlighting the difference in resources between the developed and developing world.

Comparing the aid given by the government to the people in Pakistan and in the United States during the Covid-19 pandemic, he said: "The countries which contribute the most towards pollution and have the resources should support those trying to combat climate change."

PM Imran also paid tribute to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for reiterating the message that the developed world has to take responsibility and help countries which do not have the resources when it comes to fighting global warming.

He said that Pakistan has pledged to shift to producing 60pc clean energy by 2030. "People must now pay attention to planting trees and cleaning rivers in order to reduce pollution.

"This is the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration. This is the decade the world fights back to restore the ecosystem."

The premier began by stating that it was an honour for Pakistan to be hosting the event marking World Environment Day. "The world has realised that Pakistan is one of the few countries that is worried about coming generations."

He lamented the fact that in the past, the world did not pay attention to climate change. "Some countries did, but most did not and Pakistan was among them."

He said that the the country's jungles and forests were destroyed, as more and more people took over the land while rivers became polluted. "Lahore was once the city of gardens. Now pollution levels have surpassed danger levels."

The premier stated that the world had now been given the chance to correct its course, adding that this was the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration. "This is our chance. In these ten years, the world has to correct its course."

The prime minister said that humanity will have to suffer the consequences of ignoring the effects of climate change.

Highlighting Pakistan's contributions towards combatting climate change, PM Imran said that the country was responsible for less than one per cent of global carbon emissions. "Despite this, we decided to do whatever we can to fight global warming which has negative consequences."

He said that 80pc of Pakistan's rivers are supplied from glaciers which are being affected by global warming.

"Twenty years ago, people used to make fun of those talking about climate change. But now the world is slowly realising its impact."

Commenting on the government's 10 Billion Tree Tsunami Programme, he lauded officials for planting one billion trees in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and paid tribute to the forest guards.

"The timber mafia had slowly destroyed the trees and forests. They were so powerful that no politician was ready to say anything [but] we confronted them for the first time in KP," he said, lauding the sacrifices made by the forest guards.

The prime minister said that the campaign will not be successful until the whole nation participates and comes to the realisation that this is for the children of the country.

"The teachers of Pakistan have a big responsibility. You need to start teaching children about the importance of planting trees.

"If we are successful in our goal of planting 10 billion trees, it will have a major impact on the people, the country and the economy," he said, adding that it will also combat pollution and water scarcity. "The whole country needs to participate."

He said that the country's youth was its biggest advantage and could pay a role in protecting the environment.

He said that in addition to the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami programme, the government was also focusing on trying to "recharge" the country's wetlands. "Floodwater is wasted and can be used to recharge wetlands and lakes," he said, adding that work was also being carried out on preserving and regenerating mangroves.

"We have to try and involve locals in this. But those who don't have enough to eat will never care about the environment. Therefore, green jobs are necessary as it will give them a stake in this."

We have made 15 new national parks and these require special guards, he said. The biggest benefit for locals from this will be ecotourism and they will become stakeholders, he said.

Pakistan shook conscience of West over Palestine issue: Foreign Minister

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood addressed on Saturday the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) workers gathered in his hometown wherein noting that Pakistan has registered its clear stance on the Palestine issue and that despite innocent Palestinians were bombarded there was an international media blackout.

He said the incumbent government took steps to educated the world and to prompt action against Israeli apartheid against Palestine, which included lobbying and advocating to convene a United Nations session over Palestine and intimating the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC).

The advocacy through Pakistan bore fruit after four UNGA sessions remained futile and inconclusive as we presented and fought the case of Palestine from the OIC platform, he said.

Israel had to relent and backtrack from its position due to the pressure built against it with the help of Pakistan.

He said he had set out to raise the Palestinian question in the West and then as a result when there was a concerted “Jewish lobby” conspired against him each child of Pakistan came out to defend him.

Facebook opening up ways for businesses to interact with customers on Instagram, WhatsApp

Facebook Inc is opening up ways for businesses to interact with customers on Instagram and WhatsApp, it said on Wednesday at its virtual developers conference ‘F8 Refresh.’

The world’s largest social network said it was rolling out tools so developers could build ways for businesses to message customers on Facebook-owned Instagram. Facebook said 90% of Instagram users follow at least one business.

Facebook said its messaging app WhatsApp would support more types of messages, like letting businesses send alerts when an item is back in stock. It is also testing a separate way for people to opt into messaging with businesses through a ‘Login Connect’ feature.

Facebook is focusing on expanding e-commerce, building augmented and virtual reality, and helping creators make money on its platforms, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said after the company released its latest earnings report.

WhatsApp has faced a major backlash in recent months after updating its privacy policy while expanding its business messaging tools, confusing many users who were concerned that it meant their data would be shared with Facebook.

At the conference, which was held online after being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Facebook also announced plans to launch new tools to allow researchers to analyze its data across public pages, groups and events.

The company, which has been grappling with data privacy and transparency concerns in the aftermath of the Cambridge Analytica data scandal, said this new tool would be available later this year.

WHO warns of vaccine setback until rich countries speed up sharing

World Health Organisation
A World Health Organisation (WHO) senior adviser said Friday wealthy nations need to give more COVID-19 vaccines and follow the United States in making doses available immediately to cover a 200 million dose gap caused by Indian supply disruptions and manufacturing delays.

Warning of a "two-track recovery", the WHO is urging wealthy countries to donate their surplus doses to poorer countries instead of giving them to less vulnerable groups, such as children. They have so far donated 150 million doses via the COVAX sharing scheme.

However, Bruce Aylward said on Friday that only a small portion of those doses will be available in the short-term in June, July and August when they can make a difference in slowing the pace of infections in the global pandemic.

"We are going to need twice that much and it's got to be brought forward," he said, referring to the size of wealthy country donations so far as G7 health ministers meet in Oxford.

"We don't have enough confirmed doses from enough countries early enough to get the world on track to get out of this...," he said. "We are setting up for failure if we don't get early doses."

He praised a US plan announced on Thursday to quickly share 25 million doses and encouraged other wealthy countries to follow suit.

Aylward estimated that Indian vaccine export disruptions and delays in getting other vaccines online meant that the COVAX sharing scheme had a gap of around 200 million doses.

India's Serum Institute has diverted AstraZeneca supplies to the domestic market amid a devastating second wave in India and is expected to lift those restrictions in the fourth quarter when other products earmarked for COVAX are also due online.

"All of that is going to arrive at the same time," said Aylward.

Even after a summit this week that secured an additional $2.4 billion in pledges, a nearly $17 billion funding gap for the WHO's "ACT Accelerator" to back COVID-19 vaccines, treatments and diagnostics remains, he said.

Putin seeks to mend relations with US in summit with Biden

Russian President Vladimir Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that he will hope to mend Russia's damaged relations with the US when he will hold his first summit with President Joe Biden.

The face-to-face meeting in Geneva on June 16 comes amid the biggest crisis in ties between the two countries in years, with tensions high over a litany of issues including hacking allegations, human rights and claims of election meddling.

"We need to find ways to regularise these relations," Putin told the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, adding that bilateral ties are currently at a "low level".

Usually joined at the forum's main session by other world leaders, the Russian president was alone on the stage on Friday with a moderator and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the emir of Qatar, participating via videolink.

"We have no disagreements with the United States," Putin said. "They only have one disagreement: they want to hold back our development, they talk about it publicly."

Putin said Washington's motives were a "mystery" but that policies towards Russia were being shaped "under the influence of internal political processes" in the United States.

Since taking office in January, Biden has ramped up pressure on the Kremlin, and his comments likening Putin to a "killer" were met with fierce criticism in Moscow.

The Biden administration imposed new sanctions over what US authorities say was Russia's role in the massive SolarWinds cyber attack and alleged meddling in the 2020 presidential election.

Washington has also harshly criticised Moscow for the near-death poisoning and subsequent imprisonment of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

Putin on Friday signed a law barring "extremist" groups from participating in parliamentary elections, with a court in Moscow holding a hearing next week as it considers whether to assign the label to Navalny's organisations.

Critics have denounced the law as the latest move to crack down on Russia's opposition ahead of elections in September for Russia's lower house State Duma.

The diplomatic crisis with the United States has resulted in a mutual expulsion of diplomats with Moscow prohibiting the US embassy from employing foreign nationals, practically halting its consular services.

Putin vaunted at the forum that the first line of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany has been completed, despite strong US opposition.

The United States and several European countries have deeply opposed the construction of the pipeline, arguing that it will increase European dependence on Russia for critical gas supplies and increase Moscow´s geopolitical clout.

He also suggested that European nations should pay for Russian gas in euros, rather than dollars, part of a wider effort by Russia to reduce its reliance on the dollar.

Both Russia and the United States have downplayed expectations of any major breakthroughs at the Geneva summit.

"We do not expect any breakthroughs, we do not expect any significant progress," Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agencies at the forum Friday.

He added, however, that the "very fact of the first contact is important" given that Russia-US relations are "in crisis".

Markus Ederer, the EU ambassador to Russia, said at the forum on Thursday that Moscow's relations with the European Union are also at "the most difficult point" since the Cold War.

"If you listen to what Sergei Lavrov says, you can come to the conclusion that Russia doesn't value relations with the EU," the German diplomat added, referring to Russia's foreign minister.

The Saint Petersburg International Forum often referred to as Russian Davos, is the country's main showcase for investors and brings together business and political leaders.

It is one of the largest offline events held in Russia and the world since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, although the number of participants was restricted to 5,000, nearly four times less than when it was last held in 2019.

Schools in Islamabad to reopen from June 7

Schools in Islamabad to reopen from June 7
Schools for grades 1-8 will reopen from June 7, Monday in Islamabad, a notification from the Federal Directorate of Education said Friday.

The Federal Directorate of Education, in the notification, said the exam schedule for grades 1-8 will be issued soon, as it directed teachers to complete the course.

It is pertinent to mention here that schools are conducting classes for grades 9-10.

The permission comes after several private school associations last month had called for the reopening of educational institutions in the federal capital, citing a decrease in coronavirus cases.

The associations said the reopening of educational institutions was conditional to the coronavirus positivity ratio falling below 5%, while the rate of infection in the capital has gone down to 3% in recent days.

"Despite a low coronavirus positivity ratio, the shutting down of schools in Islamabad is upsetting," the associations had said.

The associations had demanded the government immediately issue a notification allowing the schools to reopen in Islamabad.

Ready to stand with Shehbaz on budget day despite PML-N's inappropriate behaviour: Bilawal

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Friday said that the party would support Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on the budget despite the inappropriate behaviour of some PML-N members.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Bilawal said: "I unconditionally say to Shehbaz Sharif in front of the media that all PPP members will be in your support with regards to the parliament and this [upcoming] budget despite the tantrums [of some PML-N members]."

He said that PPP members would come and vote on the day of the budget and now it was up to Shehbaz as the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly to "do his work and stop the government's budget."

Bilawal was responding to a question on whether the PPP had been contacted on the budget issue and whether it would support the opposition. He responded that despite the "inappropriate behaviour" of the PML-N and other political parties in the opposition, the PPP had prioritised national issues and the budget over differences between the political parties.

"So despite their insults, the PPP went to Shehbaz Sharif's invitation for dinner so we can rid the people of economic difficulties [...] unfortunately our host was publicly insulted after that dinner by some officeholders of the PML-N," said Bilawal, adding that flinging statements at guests was not a part of "our tradition, values and culture".

The PML-N president had last week hosted a dinner reception for all mainstream opposition parties which was apparently aimed at bringing the PPP back to the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). Bilawal had not attended the dinner though senior PPP leaders did.

PPP leader Farhatullah Babar said that the PPP delegation had assured Shehbaz of their support for all moves of the joint opposition that would block the way of “anti-people decisions” in the upcoming budget.

PDM Secretary General Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had, the very next day, categorically stated that there was no place for the PPP within the opposition alliance until it restored the trust it had betrayed. "If you are not committed to trusting the movement, then there is no place for you within the PDM."

During the press conference, the PPP chairman also lashed out at the PDM, saying it should have offered resignations the same day or the next when the PPP had "supposedly" refused to listen to its demands and set out for its long march.

"If they still want to do politics of resignations then they should have given them by now.

"I think that when you have seen and the whole nation knows that the numbers are there if you want to attack Prime Minister Imran Khan and (Punjab Chief Minister) Usman Buzdar then giving resignations in that case and not bringing a no-confidence motion is akin to being an enabler of the government," said Bilawal.

The PPP chairman also criticised the government and said that the statements since the past few weeks on the the state of the economy showed that the "prime minister has no connection to the common man."

"There is a daily increase in inflation and poverty and unemployment have reached historic levels, yet our prime minister says that Pakistan's economy is developing and beating a drum of prosperity."

He said the government's ministers had come around to accept the PPP's stance on the economy and expressed the hope that Pakistan would escape the "IMF's (International Monetary Fund) grip" in the budget next week.

Bilawal also addressed the current system of accountability and said there was no rule of law. "This is revenge and political engineering and their ministers themselves accept it has hurt the economy," he said, further asking why there were differences in the treatment meted out to people.

Bilawal also reiterated his demand for parliament to be taken into confidence about the situation in Afghanistan and briefed by the relevant institutions involved so the people could decide what Pakistan's policy would be.

He also criticised the government's attempt to introduce electoral reforms through an ordinance and called upon the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to take notice of the issue. Terming it the government's attempts at rigging, he said a high level delegation of the PPP would approach the ECP to explain its stance.

Bilawal similarly hit out at an ordinance for the creation of a new media body and said the PPP would continue to oppose it. He added that the recent attacks on journalists such as Asad Ali Toor or pressure being applied to media personnel such as Hamid Mir through petitions had "exposed the government's weakness and insecurity".

Mafias want to topple incumbent govt at any cost: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said that mafias are trying to topple the democratic government at any cost after their irregularities have been exposed.

Addressing a ceremony to lay the foundation for the up-gradation of the Multan-Lodhran section of the N-5 motorway, the prime minister said that those who called themselves democratic are demanding the military to topple the government.

“These mafias are bent upon doing anything to safeguard their interests as billions of dollars stashed by them abroad through money looted in the country have been probed,” he said and added that rule of law changes the society and ensures that there are no sugar and land mafias.

He said that a change has been witnessed owing to their actions as now farmers are getting their due money from sugar mills and it has led to a record harvest of the sugarcane this year.

He challenged as to how a change could come immediately after resuming power and said that Muslims in the sub-continent struggled for years to achieve their target of a separate homeland in 1947.

“Change is not possible without a struggle,” the prime minister said adding that the opposition raised a hue and cry regarding a change a week after they took power.

“An impression was given as the new Pakistan will be build just after pushing a button,” Imran Khan said while terming the recent struggle against mafias as one of the biggest in the country after the struggle for independence in 1947.

The prime minister said that it was Almighty Allah who rescued them from the COVID situation after they took decisions to balance between the economy and the infection.

Sharing progress on CPEC, Imran Khan said they are entering the second phase of the multi-billion dollar project with China and the establishment of special economic zones will help them in lifting their exports.

The prime minister said that it was for the first time that the government is stressing the need of the IT sector and their exports in the sector have risen to Rs90 billion. “We are further constructing dams for clean energy,” the prime minister shared while stressing the need on saving the country from the effects of global warming.

He said that the establishment of national parks, plantation of 10 billion trees, and construction of dams are steps aimed at saving the next generations of the country. He further shed light on improving tourism in the country to gain fully from its potential and make it a source of increasing foreign reserves.

Imran Khan said that the vaccination will help them in improving tourism besides also safeguarding people from COVID-19.

Iran’s navy vessel sinks after fire in Gulf of Oman

Iran’s navy vessel sinks after fire in Gulf of Oman
One of Iran’s largest naval ships sank on Wednesday after catching fire while on a “training mission” off a strategic port near the head of the Gulf, the navy said.

The British-built fleet replenishment vessel Kharg, which measured more than 200 metres (more than 650 feet) long, caught fire on Tuesday off the port of Jask on the Gulf of Oman, the navy said.

Footage aired by state television showed a massive column of smoke rising from what it said was the burning vessel. The fire broke out in “one of the systems” of the ship, a navy statement said without elaborating. Firefighting efforts continued “for 20 hours” before the ship went down.

“Considering the spread of the fire, the mission to save the Kharg failed and it sank in waters off Jask,” the navy said.

The ship caught fire at 11 am on Tuesday as it was in “domestic waters” during “a training mission”, Iran’s Tasnim news agency quoted the navy’s head of public relations Behzad Jahanian as saying.

8 killed in double Afghan minibus blasts

8 killed in double Afghan minibus blasts
At least eight people were killed and nine others wounded on Thursday in two bomb blasts targeting minibuses in Kabul, according to police, in the latest attacks on commuters in the Afghan capital.

Two other buses were hit earlier this week, with fears rising that further unrest lies ahead as Washington withdraws its remaining troops in the coming months.

Police spokesman Ferdaws Faramarz said the first explosion happened on a road in southwestern Kabul near a neighbourhood largely populated by the Shia Hazara community, who have been the frequent target of militant attacks.

Four people were killed in that blast, and four others wounded.

Hours later, a second bus was hit just a few kilometres away, Faramarz said, also in a Hazara neighbourhood.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Earlier this week, the militant Islamic State group's Afghan affiliate claimed back-to-back attacks on two buses in Kabul that killed at least 10 people.

Violence has soared in recent weeks as government forces and the Taliban clash in near-daily battles across the rugged countryside, with the militants appearing to focus on battering checkpoints and bases near Kabul.

The surge in violence comes as the US military continues to withdraw its remaining 2,500 troops from Afghanistan.

President Joe Biden has ordered the military to complete the pullout by the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

But as the Americans pack up, experts fear Afghanistan will remain home to a number of jihadist groups.

The United Nations Security Council warned in a report published on Wednesday that IS continues “to pose a threat to both the country and the wider region”, saying the group had approximately 2,000 fighters inside Afghanistan.

StanChart unit to launch cryptocurrency trading platform

StanChart unit to launch cryptocurrency trading platform
A Standard Chartered unit intends to establish a cryptocurrency brokerage and exchange platform in Britain and Europe, targeting institutional clients, the bank said on Wednesday.

The new exchange will be created by a joint venture between SC Ventures, the bank’s innovation arm, and BC Technology Group, which operates Hong Kong-licensed cryptocurrency exchange OSL.

The move from Asia, Africa and Middle East-focused StanChart is one of the strongest endorsements yet from a mainstream lender for cryptocurrencies, as global banks juggle clients’ interest in the digital coins with concerns about their risks.

StanChart’s new platform will target the European market, connecting institutional traders with counterparties trading bitcoin, ether and other digital assets, the bank said.

The move marks a contrast with StanChart rival HSBC, whose chief executive told Reuters last month the bank has no plans to launch a trading desk for cryptocurrencies.

“We have a strong conviction that digital assets are here to stay and will be adopted by the institutional market as a highly relevant asset class,” said Alex Manson of SC Ventures.

OSL was the first cryptoexchange to be licensed by Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission.

Will try our best not to let anti-people budget pass: Miftah Ismail

PML-N leader and former finance minister Miftah Ismail
PML-N leader and former finance minister Miftah Ismail vowed on Wednesday that his party would "try our best not to let the [government's] anti-people budget pass".

He made the comment during a press conference in Islamabad in which he criticised the government for the increase in the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) based monthly inflation.

Ismail said the party believed incumbent Minister for Finance Shaukat Tarin and other government officials should ask the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to change its programme, adding that the PML-N would "help them and tell them what steps to take".

"This anti-people budget cannot [pass]. Is there any room left to kill poor people further? Is there more room for inflation? If not, come to your senses," he urged.

He claimed Prime Minister Imran Khan had already "lost credibility and people were tired", adding that some PTI parliamentarians had also developed differences with the premier due to his policies.

"We (opposition) do not have a majority but Imran Khan's people will not vote for him either now because there is no strength left in his ticket."

During the press conference, Ismail criticised the PTI government for "destroying the economy and bringing Pakistan to a dangerous turn".

"The SPI for April increased 21 per cent year-on-year (YoY). Some PTI people made excuses and said it would be better in May. Now, figures for May show that [SPI] has increased 17pc YoY. It means inflation in April increased 21pc compared to last year and inflation in May increased 17pc compared to last year for those items that are used by poor people and middle classes."

The PML-N leader said there was "no example" of the difficulties that Prime Minister Imran's government had put the middle-class and poor people through.

"SPI food inflation has not gone below 10pc in any month during the last two years. From February 2021, SPI did not increase by less than 13pc in any week and since March, SPI did not increase by less than 15pc in any week. When 17pc YoY inflation is happening, what will happen to the poor?" he questioned.

The SPI is calculated based on the prices of 51 essential items used by people from the middle and poor class, he shared.

"The numbers released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) show that for the smallest consumer who uses less than 50 units of electricity, the price has increased by 65pc. For Pakistan as a whole, electricity bills for each Pakistani have risen by 21pc on average."

Ismail said that according to his calculations, the price of electricity had increased by 40pc which had "no basis".

Ismail said that while the government claimed incomes had also increased, the real inflation-adjusted incomes had decreased. Incomes of people in the prime minister's cabinet had increased meanwhile, he said.

"Zulfi Bukari's income has increased. He takes private jets of companies that the government has contracts with and flies to Dubai," he added.

"The inflation in Pakistan today is because of Imran Khan's power to increase inflation, raise the prices of gas, petrol and because of the minting of rupees," he alleged.

The PML-N leader said that when his party left the government in 2018, interest rate was at 3.15pc which was increased to 6.15pc by the PTI government which, in turn, had "doubled our debt servicing".

"An injection of Rs1.5 trillion was done only to protect hot money so Morgan Stanley (bank) could get more money," he said, claiming that Prime Minister Imran had "not done accountability, only oppression and victimisation".

If the prime minister wanted to pursue accountability, there were a lot of projects from the Rawalpindi Ring Road scam to the sugar commission's inquiry report, he said.

Ismail said that the government claimed large-scale manufacturing in the country had grown a lot. "They say sales of cars have increased a lot from last year ... 151,000 cars were sold in 10 months of this year. In 2018, when the PML-N was in power, 215,000 cars were sold in 10 months. So they're still at 30pc less than us but they are [doing] better than last year."

He also contended that the government's claims of highest export in March were "incorrect", adding that imports were also the highest in March.

Comparing the present government's performance with the PML-N, he said that the PTI would "reach with great difficulty where we left exports in 2018 or Rs100-150 million above [that level]".

Ismail said the debts and budget deficit in the PTI government's tenure had "no precedent".

"They have increased debt by Rs1.3tr. If after that, they have increased reserves by Rs200 billion then what [big thing] have they done?

"If for four years, every Pakistani gets electricity, gas, flour and sugar for free, it will not take as much money as the debt accrued by Imran Khan in three years. Half of the amount of debt [Pakistan] took in 70 years has been accrued by Imran Khan in three years. They have left loans taken by PML-N very far behind; Imran Khan has accrued 30pc more loans," he claimed.

He "challenged" the prime minister to show even one road or the number of schools and hospitals built in Punjab as compared to the PML-N who he said had laid a network of motorways, brought the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Pakistan, generated 11,000 megawatt of energy and built schools and hospitals.

"Why has CPEC shut down now? Tell me what project of it has been started. Tell me, of the nine industrial zones approved by (then prime minister) Nawaz Sharif, why has not even one been built? What industrialisation has been done by Imran Khan? Why has ML-1 not been built?" he questioned.

"Exports are not increased through narrative," he quipped.

The PML-N leader said that current expenditure had been increased by the PTI government while development expenditure, tax collection and "everything else" had decreased. In the PML-N's five years in power, the budget deficit on average was 5.5pc to 5.7pc. In Imran Khan's two years, it has been 8.6pc, he added.

Ismail said the PML-N feared that the budget deficit would cross 8pc this year as well, adding that after giving the provinces their shares from tax collected, the country would "only be able to do debt servicing".

"Now we will have to defend ourselves by taking loans because of the point Imran Khan has brought Pakistan to."

He claimed that 7.5 million people were living in poverty today while the PML-N had reduced the number by two million during its tenure.

"No matter how much we talk about the state of Madinah, we have left the poor people without any support and made them poorer," he added.

No student would be awarded grades without attempting examinations this year, the education minister stressed, adding: "If we do not conduct the exams, then students will not even employ minimum efforts to study."

Mehmood's press conference came after he chaired a meeting of the provincial education ministers and officials from the education departments, according to the education ministry.

Exams for classes 9 and 11 to start after completion of classes 10 and 12 exams.

Classes 11 and 12 will be assessed on only elective subjects, said Mehmood. "This decision will make the examination process easier for students."

The minister said the exams of elective subjects will be conducted as students aspiring to opt for a selected field could be assessed on the basis
The education minister said boards were preparing to conduct exams from June 24, and now, to facilitate students, we have asked them to begin examinations after July 10.

"We have also asked boards to keep some gap between the exams," he said, as he explained the government had taken several steps to ease the process on the students as the educational institutions could not complete the course work.

The education minister said exams of classes 10 and 12 would be conducted first — from July 10 — and the examinations of classes 9 and 11 will be conducted once they end.

The minister said the government wants all the results to be issued by the third week of September so that timely issuance of results will help the students secure admissions in universities.

The education minister noted the government had decided to shut down schools as it had become necessary due to the coronavirus situation. "We then reduced the syllabus by 40%."

The minister said educational institutions were allowed to conduct the classes of 10 and 12, and now, the classes of 9 and 11 will also be conducted.

Mehmood said no teacher invigilating the exams can perform their duties without getting the coronavirus vaccine, and that is why the government has begun their inoculation on a priority basis.

"We have assured the provinces in this regard and asked them to seek assistance if they face any setbacks," he said.

The minister noted that if the people affiliated with the education sector were vaccinated, it would be easier for the government to reopen them.

The universities have been asked to consider A-Level students, who will be attempting their exams in October and November, for provisional admissions.

The minister said authorities would be urged to allow students, who were about to give exams in the near future, to attempt the entry tests for engineering, MDCAT, and other medical exams.

"These decisions are final ... and exams will be conducted no matter what happens. We have taken into consideration students' concerns and given relaxations," he added.

The education minister said the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC) played an active role during the pandemic — may it be closing or opening of schools and conducting exams.

The minister, after he concluded the press conference, took to Twitter and announced that the IPEMC had taken some important decisions regarding educational institutions today.

"For 9/10, exam in elective subjects plus math. For 11/12 only elective subjects. Exams pushed to after July 10 with 10 and 12-grade exams on priority. These decisions are final. No change," he stressed.

Responding to a query on Twitter, the education minister said all the universities would be allowed to reopen from Monday.

No quarantine for vaccinated travelers to Saudi Arabia

No quarantine for vaccinated travelers to Saudi Arabia
Travelers fully vaccinated against the coronavirus (Covid-19) do not need to quarantine upon arrival in Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) said.

However, they are required to have verified vaccination certificates.

General Authority of Civil Aviation GACA said foreign travelers who have not been vaccinated yet will have to undergo a seven-day quarantine.

The approved vaccines include Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, Oxford-AstraZeneca, and Johnson & Johnson.

Last week, the Kingdom lifted a ban on travelers arriving from 11 countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK). The other countries include Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, France, and Japan, SPA reported, quoting a Ministry of Interior sources.

Travelers arriving from these countries were asked to undergo quarantine procedures upon their arrival in the Saudi Arabia, SPA added.

The decision to lift the travel ban was made on the basis of information provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), which showed they are able to effectively control the spread of the virus.

Members agree to strengthen World Health Organisation

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
World Health Organisation members agreed on Monday to strengthen the global body at the heart of the pandemic response and give it a more secure financial base from which to tackle future health crises.

Many of the details of the concrete measures had to be left to a future date, as members continue to debate how much power to cede to the UN body.

But WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus hailed the resolution passed on the last day of the UN health agency’s annual meeting of its 194 member states as “historic”.

“The world needs a stronger WHO at the centre of the global health architecture,” he said.

A year and a half after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic that has killed more than 3.5 million people, member states agreed to strengthen the organisation at the heart of the global response to the crisis.

The 14-page resolution adopted on Monday vowed among other things to remove the uncertainty around the organisation’s funding.

Member states committed to “ensure the adequate, flexible, sustainable and predictable financing of WHO’s programme budget”.

Only about 16 percent of the agency’s budget currently comes from regular membership fees. The rest comes from voluntary contributions that are heavily earmarked by countries for particular projects.

Tedros pointed out that even in the midst of the crisis, low and uncertain funding levels had meant programmes were being planned “in a debilitating cycle of financial ebb and flow”. “WHO cannot grow stronger without sustainable financing,” he said in closing remarks to the 74th World Health Assembly, which has been held virtually over the past week.

“We cannot pay people with praise.” With Monday’s resolution, countries also agreed to “strengthen WHO’s capacity to rapidly and appropriately assess disease outbreaks” of possible global concern.

But they put off deciding most of the steps required, and some members are resisting moves to hand more power and independence to the WHO for fear it might encroach on their sovereignty.

They decided to create a new working group to study and streamline numerous recommendations presented by three independent panels, and create concrete proposals for next year’s assembly to consider.

The expert panels had painted a bleak picture, finding that countries and institutions had been woefully unprepared to deal with Covid-19.

They called for a total overhaul of the global alarm system, and for a stronger, more independent WHO to help avert future pandemics.

Monday’s resolution called on all countries to increase their ability to detect new threats and to communicate such threats effectively at home and abroad.

To ensure all nations do their part, the resolution asked Tedros to consider creating a pilot project in which countries would submit their pandemic preparedness plans to regular peer reviews by other members states — just as they undergo reviews of their rights situations before the UN Human Rights Council.

The resolution stopped short of explicitly backing the experts’ recommendation to hand the WHO broader powers to launch investigations or communicate about health threats without waiting for a green light from the countries concerned.

Authorities close to tracing one of the culprits in Asad Ali Toor case: Interior Minister

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed
Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Tuesday said that authorities were close to tracing one of the suspects responsible for physically assaulting journalist Asad Ali Toor in Islamabad last week.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, the minister said that the the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and police were conducting an inquiry into the incident.

"The fingerprints will be identified in a day or two," he said, adding that ads would be published in the newspapers if authorities were unsuccessful in tracing the suspects.

He stated that the receptionist who had recorded his statement said that he did not stop the culprits because they had visited in the past. "I have called the IG, Nadra and FIA [...] we are close to identifying one of the culprits."

He said that it was necessary to catch the culprits as some individuals "unnecessarily" target the country's security agencies to please their "foreign rulers".

"I think that if we are successful in reaching these culprits, all those who blame our agencies will be silenced," he said, adding that such individuals were unaware of the damage they cause to the country's image in the eyes of the world.

Responding to a question from a reporter, the minister reiterated that Nadra was conducting a fingerprint analysis the results of which would be out soon. "Otherwise we will give ads in the newspapers with the photos of the three suspects because some people are accusing our agencies according to a specific agenda."

He said that there needed to be a policy in this regard as such incidents raise question marks about the government's performance and also become a human rights issue. "Also those targeting agencies, but have separate agendas, also get off scot-free," he said, adding that a policy is needed to punish those involved in such crimes.

Asked about veteran journalist Hamid Mir, who was taken off air after making a fiery speech at a protest calling for accountability for repeated assaults on journalists in the country, the minister said: "I didn't close it down. I haven't interacted with him in the past few years, nor have I ever been on his programme."

The minister began his press conference by talking about his recent visit to Kuwait which has decided to resume granting visas to Pakistani families and businessmen. "It was a highly successful tour," he said that 425 doctors would leave for Kuwait this week.

He added that the Kuwaiti prime minister had also expressed willingness to issue visas for the construction sector.

"Similarly, 30pc of the three million visas Saudi Arabia will give out will go to Pakistanis," he said, adding that foreign remittances were a large part of the economy.

Commenting on the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), the minister said that only Maulana Fazlur Rehman and PML-N remained in the alliance. "I don't know about the others. It is done," he said, calling on journalists to name the parties in the alliance.

"Two have left and two remain. It is completely defunct but everyone is playing it up on the media," he said.
