Ertugrul series likely to break YouTube record

Ertugrul a Turkish television series

After being aired on the state-run Pakistan Television (PTV), TRT Ertugrul by PTV, the serial’s YouTube channel, crossed 1 million subscribers.

“Now, it’s time to make history by reaching 6.6 million subscribers before May 26th, 2020 and make the #ErtugrulYouTubeRecord,” TRT Ertugrul PTV wrote on Twitter.

On April 25, coinciding with the first day of Ramadan, PTV aired the first episode of the popular Turkish TV series that highlights the history of Muslims during the 13th century.

Shortly after the 45-minute long first episode was broadcast, #ErtugrulUrduPTV was trending with viewers welcoming the series as they shared some scenes from the first episode on social media.

Often described as the Turkish Game of Thrones, the series is woven around 13th century Anatolia and tells the story prior to the establishment of the Ottoman Empire. It illustrates the struggle of Ertuğrul Gazi, father of the empire’s founder.

Other Turkish TV series have also become hugely popular in Pakistan.

Korean researchers find drug that is more effective than remdesivir in treating COVID-19

Korean researchers find drug that is more effective in treating COVID-19 than remdesivir
A research team at the Institute Pasteur Korea have identified a drug that appears to be more effective in treating COVID-19 than Gilead’s remdesivir.

The drug is called Nafamostat, which is used to treat pancreatic cancer, and it is a potent antiviral inhibitor. This was proven to be the most effective out of 24 therapeutic candidates, with these drugs being tested in an experiment with a Vero cell culture.

Vero cells are a cell lineage that originated from the kidney of the African Green monkey, and it is frequently used in cell cultures.

Kim Seung-taek, Director of the Zoonotic Virus Lab at the Institute Pasteur Korea, said: “The coronavirus causes the disease COVID-19 when it infiltrates the human lungs. Considering that the coronavirus’s infection of Vero cells differed from its infection of lung cells, we carried out an additional experiment on human lung cell cultures.”

The team’s experiment found that Nafamostat had little efficacy in inhibiting the coronavirus in Vero cells but it was the most potent in the treatments in lung cells. Nafamostat’s concentration of the substance needed to inhibit viral replication, known as IC50, was found to be 13.88μm in Vero cells but 0.0022μm in lung cells, and this was 600 times smaller than the 1.3μm results for remdesivir in lung cells.

Based on this evidence, the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) have said that the Institut can go forward with their clinical trials. This will involve 10 hospitals and will be supervised by Bae In-gyu, a professor of infectious disease at Gyeongsang National University Hospital.

Since the drug has already been approved in both Japan and Korea as a pancreatitis medication, researchers can skip past animal testing which is the standard first part of clinical trials. If the study is a success, Nafamostat could be used to treat COVID-19 at large in Korea.

Italy to reopen borders on June 3 to restart tourism

Italy to reopen borders on June 3
Italy will reopen to tourists from early June and scrap a 14-day mandatory quarantine period, the government said Saturday, as it quickened the country’s exit from the coronavirus lockdown.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte enforced an economically-crippling shutdown in early March to counter a global pandemic which official records show has killed over 31,500 people in the country.

The shutdown has effectively ended all holidaymaking in a country heavily dependent on the tourism industry.

Although Italy never formally closed its borders, and has allowed people to cross back and forth for work or health reasons, it banned movement for tourism and imposed a two-week isolation period for new arrivals.

Beginning on June 3, all visitors will be allowed back into the country and will no longer be obliged to self-isolate. Italians will also be able to move between regions, though local authorities can limit travel in specific areas if infection numbers spike.

Movements to and from abroad can be limited by regional decree “in relation to specific states and territories, in accordance with the principles of adequacy and proportionality to the epidemiological risk,” the government said.

The peak of Italy’s contagion passed at the end of March, but with officials warning a second wave cannot be ruled out, Conte had been reluctant to lift the lockdown quickly.

His softly-softly approach however has frustrated many of Italy’s regions, with some going ahead and opening everything from restaurants to beaches early.

Italy’s restaurants and hairdressers are being allowed to reopen on Monday, two weeks earlier than initially planned. Shops will also open and Italians will finally be able to see friends, as long as they live within their same region.

Church masses will begin again, but the faithful will have to follow social distancing rules and holy water fonts will be empty. Italy’s mosques will also reopen.

Regions will be able to decide how far apart clients should be in restaurants and other public places, or use the government’s regulations, drawn up in collaboration with its scientific advisors.

Punjab govt to reopen shopping malls, auto industry from Monday

Fiaz ul Hassan
Punjab Information Minister Fayyaz-ul-Hassan Chohan has said that as a part of lifting the lockdown in phases, the provincial government will reopen shopping malls and allow the automotive industry to resume operations from Monday.

The minister's statement came as Punjab recorded more than 14,000 cases of the coronavirus and more than 240 deaths.

Chohan said that the overall situation across the province is satisfactory after the government allowed people to go on about their daily businesses while ensuring the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures.

The minister said that the decision to either ease or ramp up lockdown restrictions will be taken keeping in view the public response during the coronavirus pandemic.

He said that people can carry out daily activities while making sure they are following the SOPs put in place by the government.

The Punjab minister expressed hope that the public will not take undue advantage of the ease in curbs and act responsibly.

He said the transport industry has also been allowed to resume inter-city travel with the already-agreed SOPs.

Earlier today, Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar urged citizens to follow the Standard Operating Procedures laid out by the government in order to remain safe from the coronavirus.

A day ago, the Punjab government had decided in principle to allow public transport to resume.

Punjab finalised the SOPs in a meeting with the transport association, with the latter's representative agreeing to reduce the fares on the back of a steep decline in petroleum prices.

State Bank cuts interest rate by 100bps to 8%

State Bank of Pakistan
The State Bank of Pakistan reduced on Friday the policy rate by 100 basis points to 8%, it said in a statement.

The decision was made at a meeting of the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee. It reflected the committee’s view that the inflation outlook has improved further in light of the recent cut in domestic fuel prices.

As a result, inflation could fall closer to the lower end of the previously announced ranges of 11-12% this fiscal year and 7-9% next fiscal year.

The committee highlighted that the coronavirus pandemic has created unique challenges for monetary policy due to its non-economic origin and the temporary disruption of economic activity required to combat it.

While easier monetary policy can neither affect the rate of infection transmission nor prevent the near-term fall in economic activity due to lockdowns, it can provide liquidity support to households and businesses to help them through the ensuing temporary phase of economic disruption, it said.

The successive policy rate cuts and sizeable cheap loans provided through the SBP’s enhanced refinancing facilities have helped maintain credit flows, bolster the cash flow of borrowers, and support asset prices, according to the MPC. This has contained the tightening of financial conditions that would otherwise have amplified the initial necessary contraction in activity.

However, the inflation outlook is subject to two-sided risks.

“Inflation could fall further than expected if economic activity fails to pick up, as expected next fiscal year,” the central bank said. “On the other hand, there are some upside risks from potential food-price shocks associated with adverse agricultural conditions.”

Price pressures could also emerge if the economy gains greater momentum in the second half of FY21.

The MPC believed that with today’s rate cut, the monetary policy stance should support the economy over the coming months, while ensuring price and financial stability.

20% of the domestic flights would resume operations: Ghulam Sarwar Khan

Ghulam Sarwar Khan
Domestic flights are slated to resume operations, starting May 16, from five major airports in the country, according to a notice from the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA), days after Prime Minister Imran Khan announced a relaxation in the lockdown to contain the coronavirus.

In a video statement, Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan said 20% of the domestic flights would resume operations starting tomorrow (Saturday) following the final decision taken by the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) on Thursday.

The five major airports include Jinnah International Airport, Allama Iqbal International Airport, Islamabad International Airport (IIAP), Quetta International Airport, and Bacha Khan International Airport.

Sarwar said social distancing would be followed based on the seats in the airplane and capacity to fill 50% of the seats would be maintained. "Passengers will be provided the opportunity to travel safely," he added.

The move came "in view of the difficulties being faced by passengers in travelling between major cities in Pakistan", the PCAA said on Twitter.

The minister, it added, noted that the "Aviation Division has prepared very strict SOPs ensuring disinfection, social distancing and safety for the airline crew and passengers".

Apart from social distancing, other measures include "disinfection of the aircraft prior to boarding, at least one vacant seat between the passengers, compulsory wearing of masks and use of hand sanitizer". Furthermore, no food or beverages would be allowed.

Passengers would be required to fill health declaration forms before boarding the airplane and subjected to thermal scanning on entry and exit into and from a city. All luggage would be disinfected and no meet and greet would be allowed at the airport.

Drivers were advised to stay inside their respective vehicles in the parking lot.

A spokesperson for the PCAA said domestic flights would be operated by the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and one private company. The national carrier's administration said tickets sales may start as early as the evening today.

However, sources informed that certain airlines have said they were not ready to resume domestic flight operations.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan extended its ban on the international flight operations until May 31.

"Remaining provisions as applicable to the suspension of Int flights reflected in previous orders remain unchanged," the PCAA said on Twitter.

The aviation regulatory authority had previously announced an extension in domestic flight operations till May 10.

There will be no vaccine for the virus this year so we will have to live with it: PM Khan

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Friday the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cannot be brought under control until a vaccine is developed to cure the deadly disease.

Speaking at a media briefing, he said the lockdown enforced to contain the spread of the virus in the country took a toll on 150 million people. He pointed out the government was under compulsion to ease restrictions, noting that the relaxation in the lockdown will increase burden on hospitals and medics as Covid-19 cases will see a surge.

“Scientists say that there will be no vaccine for the virus this year so we will have to live with it,” the prime minister said, stressing that the lockdown can only help contain it and cannot stop it.

He said coronavirus cases are far lower than projected in the country at present but they will continue to increase. “Coronavirus cases and deaths were projected to reach 52,695 and 1,324, respectively, by May 14,” he added.

Prime Minister Khan reiterated that the government is taking steps to strengthen the health system to cope with increasing cases of the deadly virus. “Our current health facilities have the capability to cope with coronavirus until the end of June as four to five patients out of every 100 will have to go to hospital,” he expounded.

He said it is up to an employer to implement standard operation procedures (SOPs) to avert spread of the virus, adding places which will see a spike in coronavirus will have to be closed.

The government rolled out a stimulus package of eight billion dollars despite financial crunch as compared to packages of 2,200 billion dollars and 1,000 billion dollars announced by the US and Japan respectively in wake of the global health crisis, the prime minister maintained.

He announced people rendered jobless due to the crisis will start getting cash handouts from Monday.

Prime Minister Khan urged the people to take maximum precautionary measures to keep the disease at bay. He said closure of public transport is causing hardships to the poor, asking the provinces to open public transport to facilitate the masses.

Speaking on the occasion, Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar said more than 500 virus hotspots in the country were locked down two days back. He said the country’s testing capacity has increased by 27 per cent.

He said the government pushing ahead with its fight against the coronavirus with a coherent strategy.

Dr Faisal Sultan, the prime minister’s focal person on coronavirus, said the coronavirus has detracted focus from other diseases in the country. The country’s progress towards eradication of diseases like tuberculosis and polio can suffer because of the pandemic, he added.

Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat will preside over a meeting to finalise the SOPs. After the finalisation of the guidelines, the provincial government will take the federal government into confidence before permitting public transport to hit the road.

In a report presented to the chief minister, it was stated that the common man had to face hardships because of suspension of public transport as part of preventive measures to stem the spread of the virus.

It stressed the need for restoration of public transport to provide relief to the public as well as transporters.

Earlier, on May 7, Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced lifting of the lockdown in phases starting May 9. Subsequently, various construction-related industries and markets were allowed to resume operations across the country under strict SOPs.

Public transport was not opened because of the provinces’ reservations. The prime minister had said he believed public transport should be opened because it is the common man’s means of transport and that the government wants to make the lives of people easier.

Addressing a seminar on COVID-19 impacts on economy, Hafeez Shaikh said that it was difficult for them to ascertain the losses economy suffered due to coronavirus pandemic.

“We expected a growth rate of 3 percent before virus hit the country,” he said adding that at that time they witnessed a 16 percent increase in tax collection from previous year.

He said that they expected a further increase in tax collection during the last three months of the fiscal year- April to June-however it was ruined due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“We witnessed a 40 percent decline in exports in April due to coronavirus while the remittances are also expected to go down due to increase in global unemployment,” the finance adviser said.

Hafeez Shaikh said that before the pandemic, they expected to achieve a tax target of upto Rs 4800 billion, however, in current scenario, they would be fortunate if they achieve a target of Rs 3900 billion.

Recapping decisions made earlier, he said that the National Coordination Committee had announced a closure of schools till July 15 and it had been decided that final examinations for classes 9, 10 and intermediate would not be held.

He said that it was learnt that 4 million students had to appear in examinations for classes 9, 10, 11 and 12.

For these students, the result of their previous class would be calculated based on their new class' result.

The education minister also said that those "failing in less than 40% subjects in 9 and 11 will be given [a] passing grade".

He said that special exams will be held between September and November for students who had been divided into four categories.

The third category has students who wished to improve their results in a few subjects.

The fourth category has students who failed in more than 40% subjects in class 11.

He said that those wishing to appear in these exams must inform their boards by July 1.

TikTok accused of breaching child privacy regulations

TikTok
Privacy advocacy organisations have accused popular app TikTok of violating a consent decree and a law protecting children’s privacy online.

The Center for Digital Democracy, Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and others said TikTok had failed to take down all videos made by children under the age of 13, as it agreed to do under a consent agreement with the FTC announced in February 2019.

At the time, the FTC said that TikTok, then known as Musical.ly, had known that young children used the app and had failed to get parental consent to collect their names, email addresses and other personal information. It paid a fine of $5.7 million.

But, the privacy advocates said, TikTok failed to delete personal information about users age 12 and younger as they promised as part of the consent agreement.

“We found that TikTok currently has many regular account holders who are under age 13, and many of them still have videos of themselves that were uploaded as far back as 2016, years prior to the consent decree,” they said in their complaint.

TikTok’s decision to create accounts for children age 12 and under that have less functionality failed to meet requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act because the company still collects information, which it shares with third parties that want it for advertising. Also, children can easily avoid using the kids version of the app by being dishonest about their age, the groups said.

In addition, TikTok fails to post on its homepage an easy-to-find link to its privacy policy, the groups said.

“TikTok continues to be one of the most popular apps in the world, and it is widely used by children and teens in the United States, so it is especially important that the FTC promptly and thoroughly investigate TikTok’s practices and take effective enforcement action,” the groups said in their complaint.

Other groups signing on to the complaint include Berkeley Media Studies Group, Consumer Action, Consumer Federation of America, Consumer Reports and Electronic Privacy Information Center.

Malaysia to ease ban on congregational prayers before Eid as cases decline

Blue Mosque, Malaysia
Muslim-majority Malaysia will ease a ban on mass prayers in mosques, starting from Friday and ahead of this month’s Eid festival, the government said, as it gradually relaxes curbs that have helped rein in the coronavirus.

The news follows last week’s re-opening of many businesses in Malaysia, which has a tally of 6,819 infections and 112 deaths. It comes ahead of the Eid holiday that ends the fasting month of Ramadan, and falls on May 24 this year.

The capital, Kuala Lumpur, is among Malaysia’s federal territories which will allow prayers by congregations limited to 30 or fewer, said Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, the religious affairs minister.

“Even though worship in Islam is not confined only to mosques and suraus, it has a profound effect on the spiritual development of Muslims,” he told reporters on Thursday, in a reference to smaller prayer sites.

The measure excludes Malaysia’s 12 remaining states, which have their own laws on religious matters, but Zulkifli said they were free to adopt similar measures if they wished.

Mass prayers have been banned since around mid-March in a partial lockdown after more than 2,300 people were infected in the country’s biggest outbreak, following a religious gathering at a mosque attended by about 16,000 people.

Although new daily cases have declined steadily, schools and colleges will stay closed until June 9. Health authorities identified six clusters involving Islamic religious schools, with 635 students and staff testing positive.

Four clusters were linked to the March gathering.

Dubai Health Authority bans rapid viral testing kit for COVID-19

Dubai Health Authority bans rapid viral testing kit for COVID-19
Dubai Health Authority bans rapid viral testing kit for Covid,Test found to give far too many false positives and negatives for coronavirus suspected cases.

Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has banned the rapid viral test for COVID-19 following reports of false positives and negatives.

In a circular sent out to all private hospitals, outpatient care facilities and pharmaceutical establishments, DHA has asked them to refrain from using or selling the rapid viral anti-body testing kits.

The pregnancy-style rapid anti-body testing kits use blood samples of the individual to detect antibodies against COVID-19. However, its accuracy worldwide has been found to be less than 30 per cent.

Confirming the ban, Dr Jyoti Sateesh Rampallivar, specialist clinical pathologist at the Bio-health Diagnostic Centre, Dubai, said: “The efficacy of this test is not reliable. Although the test kits claim 97-99 per cent sensitivity, the test is neither reliable nor specific.”

Explaining how anti-viral kits work, Dr Anthony Thomas, director of diagnostics division at Prime Hospital, said “Normally, our body produces antibodies in response to a virus or bacteria when we are exposed to it. Usually, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is taken through a nasal swab for early detection. In case of the rapid testing kits, the antibodies develop after 5-7 or more days so it is not advisable for early detection and the current kits are not reliable.”

He said, “The rapid antibody blood test which has been banned was proving to be unreliable as it was giving far too many false positives and negatives causing confusion. Our main strength in this fight is effective diagnosis that can help prevention and spread of COVID-19. So withdrawing the test was the right step.”

Pace legend Shoaib Akhtar has responded to Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) advisor Tafazzul Rizvi and sent a legal notice informing him that the defamation lawsuit filed against him was "defective/invalid".

The legal jabs had begun last week when Rizvi had sent Akhtar a notice after being branded an "inept" person by the fastest bowler ever in a YouTube video.

Akhtar had levelled a series of allegations in the video, accusing the PCB of providing cover to fixers and Rizvi of profiting by pitting players against the board.

The Rawalpindi Express, in his own legal retort sent through his attorney, stated that his analysis, "made in public interest", are a critique on the PCB's shortcomings and meant as "expression of opinion and not assertion of fact".

Akhtar branded Rizvi's notice "legally defective, meritless and misconceived" and demanded that he issue an apology for their attempt to "publicly humiliate, degrade, defame and ridicule" him.

Australia church fined for illegally advertising purported "miracle" virus cure

church in Australia has been fined for unlawfully advertising a purported
A church in Australia has been fined for unlawfully advertising a purported "miracle" coronavirus cure that contains a bleach product, the Therapeutic Goods Administration said Wednesday.

The medical regulator said MMS Australia had received 12 fines totalling Aus$151,200 (US$98,000) for promoting its "Miracle Mineral Solution" (MMS), which the TGA said contained a high concentration of sodium chlorite — a chemical used as a textile bleaching agent and disinfectant.

MMS Australia is a chapter of the US-based Genesis II Church of Health and Healing, which is subject to a US Justice Department injunction preventing it from selling or distributing its own version of MMS containing the bleach product chlorine dioxide.

A website purportedly linked to the Genesis II Church has listed testimonials claiming — without evidence — that MMS can cure everything from Alzheimer´s to malaria.

Australia´s TGA said it had fined the church because it was "concerned about the harmful effects that can be caused by the ingestion of MMS".

"There is no clinical, scientifically-accepted evidence showing that MMS can cure or alleviate any disease," the regulator said. "The use of MMS presents serious health risks, and can result in nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and severe dehydration, which in some cases can result in hospitalisation."

MMS Australia is still advertising the products on its website, but said it had removed some text from the descriptions "to stay compliant with touted advertising laws and regulations".

It added that "media lies that our site promotes the drinking of dangerous industrial bleach" had led to "ignorant and reprehensible, harrasment (sic) and attacks on our Church".

The church claims on the site that, contrary to TGA´s findings, it does "not list or sell any therapeutic goods, as defined by legislation, and any apparent mention or reference to same is inadvertant (sic) and coincidental".

It is not the first time MMS Australia has been in the spotlight for selling its purported "miracle" cure.

Four Australians were hospitalised after drinking the solution in 2014, prompting the TGA to issue a public safety warning.

The fine comes weeks after US President Donald Trump was severely criticised for suggesting COVID-19 patients could be treated with disinfectant.

The president later tried ot walk back his comments, saying he was speaking "sarcastically".

Saudi Govt announces round-the-clock curfew during Eid

Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia's interior ministry announced on Tuesday that a round-the-clock nationwide curfew will be implemented during the five-day Eid al-Fitr holiday to control the spread of the coronavirus as infections spike in the kingdom.

The kingdom, which has reported the highest number of virus cases in the Gulf region, is scrambling to limit the spread of the deadly disease.

A full lockdown will be reimposed around the country from May 23-27, the ministry said in a statement released by the official Saudi Press Agency. The period coincides with Eid that marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Most parts of the kingdom were put under full lockdown following the outbreak, but last month the government relaxed the curfew between the hours of 9am and 5pm.

Malls and retailers have been allowed to reopen, except in major hotspots including the holy city of Makkah — where confirmed cases have soared, despite a stringent lockdown.

The health ministry said on Tuesday the number of COVID-19 deaths had risen to 264 and confirmed infections to 42,925, while 15,257 people have recovered.

In March, Saudi Arabia suspended the year-round "umrah" pilgrimage over fears of the disease spreading in Islam's holiest cities.

Authorities are yet to announce whether they will proceed with this year's hajj — scheduled for late July — but they have urged Muslims to temporarily defer preparations for the annual pilgrimage.

Last year, some 2.5 million faithful travelled to Saudi Arabia from across the world to participate in the hajj, which Muslims are obliged to perform at least once during their lifetime.

The Arab world's biggest economy has also closed cinemas and restaurants and halted flights as it attempts to contain the virus.

King Salman has warned of a "more difficult" fight ahead against COVID-19, as the kingdom faces the double blow of virus-led shutdowns and crashing oil prices.

Usman Buzdar records statement in sugar subsidy case

Usman Buzdar
Chief Minister Usman Buzdar appeared before the inquiry commission today and recorded his statement about the subsidy given to the sugar mills owners.

The commission, headed by Director-General Federal Investigation Agency Wajid Zia, had summoned the Punjab chief minister to testify on giving subsidy worth Rs3 billion to the millers in haste in 2019 and the wheat crisis.

CM Buzdar informed the panel about the details regarding the subsidy and transfers and posting of officers in the provincial food department.

The commission probing an unusual increase in sugar prices has widened its scope of investigation by summoning almost all the decision-makers who have been involved in approving subsidies and dealing with the export and import of sugar over the past five years.

Federal Minister for Planning Asad Umar had appeared before it to explain the decision to export sugar taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) headed by him as finance minister in 2018.

Umar had, while responding to former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi's allegations, requested the commission to summon him.

Sources had said CM Buzdar would most likely be questioned about 24 Punjab sugar mills receiving Rs11.8 billion in freight subsidies from the federal and Punjab governments in 2017 and 2019 combined. Nearly Rs9.4 billion was released in 2017 — under the subsidy scheme on exports — by then prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif, noted the data prepared by the State Bank of Pakistan for the inquiry commission tasked with probing the recent hike in sugar prices. Of the amount, the Centre and Punjab government gave near equal subsidies to the sugar mills.

Usman Buzdar, according to sources, would be questioned also about issuing nearly Rs2.5bn for 15 of the 24 mills located in Punjab, in 2019.

Those who benefited included the JDW Group which is owned by Jahangir Khan Tareen, a senior PTI leader. Tareen was the principal beneficiary of the total subsidies dispensed, officials said. His mill received Rs2.3 billion during the PML-N tenure of which JDW took home Rs1.8 billion as freight support on sugar exports from the Punjab and federal governments, they added.

Last year, Tareen’s second unit, JK Sugar Mills Pvt Ltd, received Rs5 million from the Punjab chief minister.

Others, such as Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar who belongs to the ruling party, businessman Chaudhry Munir, and PML-Q’s Chaudhry Moonis Elahi received Rs2.8 billion collectively from the federal and Punjab governments as freight support on exports in 2017 and 2019. The RYK Mills Ltd, owned by Khusro Bakhtiar’s family, received nearly Rs889 million in 2017 from the Centre and Punjab and almost Rs89 million in 2019 from the Punjab government.

Two units of the Etihad Sugar Mills Ltd, jointly owned by Khusro Bakhtiar’s family and the Chaudhrys, received nearly Rs370 million from the Punjab and federal governments in 2017 and nearly Rs184 million from the Punjab government in 2019, official data revealed.

On Tuesday, official sources revealed that Umar was asked tough questions by the commission members. He testified on the decision to export sugar, which according to members of the commission, led to a sugar price hike in the country, paving the way for millers to extract billions of rupees from the pocket of the consumers.

Earlier on Friday, former prime minister Abbasi had said that the decisions taken by the ECC and federal cabinet led to a hike in prices of sugar across the country earlier this year.

The PML-N leader was talking to media outside the Federal Investigation Agency’s headquarters, where he had appeared before the wheat and sugar crisis inquiry commission head Wajid Zia to record his statement.

In his media talk, Abbasi had said that he presented all the ‘facts’ before the commission. He had said that the prime minister should ask his cabinet regarding the increase in rates of sugar, adding that the green signal to export sugar was given despite no surplus amount of the product in the country.

Abbasi said that for 16 months the export of sugar continued but the government did not take any notice of it. He had also said that there should be a tax on imports so it is not possible to import sugar. “The situation proves that the prime minister is corrupt,” alleged the senior PML-N leader.

Karachi’s Zainab Market sealed over failure to follow COVID-19 SOPs

Zainab market karachi
Zainab Market, Victoria Market and the International Market in Karachi’s Saddar were sealed on Wednesday for failing to follow the SOPs regarding the novel coronavirus.

The action was taken when the Saddar assistant commissioner was out on a round to monitor the markets in the area.

“The SOPs that the government had issued were not being followed by both the shopkeepers and the customers,” he said, adding that the sellers had not worn masks, gloves or even installed hand sanitisers.

During the survey, a spat also took place between the police and the shop owners. The sellers claimed that they were following all the SOPs.

The Sindh government had allowed the markets to reopen amid strict instructions on May 11. According to the SOPs, not more than three customers are to be allowed to be inside a shop at a time, with a distance of four-five feet to be maintained between them.

ICC postpones qualifiers for women's World Cup, U-19 World Cup

women's World Cup
The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday announced that qualifiers for next year's women's World Cup and the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, both in July have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The ICC said it took the decision as part of its "comprehensive contingency planning process and after consultation".

The women's qualifiers were due to take place in Sri Lanka between July 3-19, with three berths available for the 2021 event in New Zealand.

Qualifying for the 2022 U-19 tournament was scheduled to begin with a European regional tournament in Denmark from July 24-30.

"Our priority during this difficult period is to protect the well-being of players, coaches, officials, fans and the whole cricket community," said Chris Tetley, ICC head of events.

He added that the ICC would try to find an "appropriate window" to reschedule "as soon as is safe and practical to do so".

Two remaining U-19 regional qualifiers, set for Tanzania and Thailand later this year, are under review, the ICC added.

The ICC had earlier shut down all qualifiers for next year's Twenty20 World Cup and the 2023 50-over World Cup until July.

Last month, the governing body said it was still planning to hold the men's Twenty20 World Cup in Australia from October.

SHAHID KHAQAN ABBASI SLAMS ‘SMART LOCKDOWN’

Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi hit out at the government and its “smart lockdown”, saying the Centre had no concrete plan to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

“The prime minister had said he would not impose a lockdown in the country because the poor and daily wagers would suffer as a result of it. He then said that the lockdown had been enforced by the elite. Who are these elite,” Abbasi asked, addressing the floor of the House on Wednesday.

“The day the prime minister said he would not enforce a lockdown, there was a curfew in front of his own house,” he said.

Abbasi continued, “Then a new word ‘smart lockdown was introduced. Where is the federal government’s decision about the lockdown? It was the provinces' decision to enforce lockdowns.”
