Chairman of Pakistan People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari will meet Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz over lunch at Jati Umra in Raiwind today (Sunday).

The PPP young leader will be meeting Maryam at her invitation to discuss current political situation following the 2019 budget and recent arrests of former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur and Punjab Assembly opposition leader Hamza Shehbaz.

The PML-N leader said in a tweet a day earlier that the meeting with the PPP leader was finalised after taking Nawaz and Shehbaz Sharif into confidence.

“This & all other decisions in the party are taken after the approval of MNS [Mian Nawaz Sharif] & MSS [Mian Shehbaz Sharif’ & taking the senior leaders into confidence. Discipline & part hierarchy are followed by all including me,” she tweeted.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Mr Bhutto-Zardari confirmed Maryam had invited him for a meeting on Sunday (today) at her place and “I will be meeting her.”

This will be the second meeting between the two in less than a month. Previously, they had met in May when the PPP chairman hosted an Iftar dinner for the leaders hailing from the opposition parties at Zardari House in Islamabad.

Former President Asif Ali Zardari, Hamza Shahbaz, Ayaz Sadiq, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Awami National Party (ANP) leader Mian Iftikhar Hussain, PTM leaders Ali Wazir, Muhsin Dawar, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Liaqat Baloch, PPP leaders Khurshid Shah, Raza Rabbani, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Yousuf Raza Gillani among others attended the event.

It is to be noted that the opposition parties, PPP and PML-N, are rattled by the recent arrests of their top brass at the hands of NAB. Moreover, the opposition has decided to hold an anti-government protest.

PM Appoints Ali jahangir as Pakistan,s ambassador at large for foreign investment

PM Appoints Ali jahangir as Pakistan,s ambassador at large for foreign investment
Ali Jehangir Siddiqui has been appointed as Ambassador-at-Large for foreign investment in an honorary capacity, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced yesterday.

Siddiqui, 42, has previously served as Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States until 2018. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which was in the opposition at the time, had severely criticized Siddiqui’s appointment by the former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as the country’s ambassador to the US.

It had been argued at the time that Siddiqui did not have any prior experience regarding diplomatic missions. However, his latest appointment shows Siddiqui is a man of skills and has been picked by Prime Minister Imran Khan on merit and business acumen.

Siddiqui, a serial entrepreneur and investor, is the son of renowned Pakistani businessman and entrepreneur, Jahangir Siddiqui, and Mahvash Siddiqui, a university professor and philanthropist.

From 2017 to 2018, he served as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister with the status of Minister of State during the tenure of former PM Nawaz Sharif before being appointed as the country’s top envoy to the United States.

ICC World Cup 2019: South Africa bowled Afghanistan our 125 runs

Afghanistan vs southAfrica
South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl in their must-win World Cup match against Afghanistan in Cardiff on Saturday.

The Proteas, missing the injured Dale Steyn, suffered defeats against England, Bangladesh and India before picking up a point from a rain-ruined match against the West Indies in Southampton.

Afghanistan are also winless and were bottom of the 10-team table before the match, one place below South Africa.

South Africa were unchanged from the team that started the match against the West Indies, which ended in a no result.

Afghanistan made one change, bringing in former captain Asghar Afghan in place of Najibullah Zadran.

"Chasing when there is rain around generally gives you a better indication of what to do," said South Africa captain Faf du Plessis.

"We have played hardly any cricket so there is no need to make any changes. We’ve had a lot of rain which hasn’t been ideal but we’ve had some good team chats."

Afghanistan skipper Gulbadin Naib said: "We would have had a bowl as well but we have had a good four days of practice here.

Arthur terms game against India opportunity for Pakistan to make a mark

Mickey Arthur
Pakistan’s head coach Mickey Arthur has said that the World Cup game against India on Sunday provides Pakistan players “an unbelievable opportunity to make a mark.”

Arthur told media at Old Trafford that a significant performance in the game can define the career of players and any special thing done by them would be remembered forever.

“I'm telling our players in the dressing room, you could be a hero tomorrow. Your careers are going to be defined by a moment in the game. You do something incredible tomorrow, you'll be remembered forever,” he said.

“Our kind of mantra is how do you want to be remembered? We've got 15 incredible cricketers in that dressing room, and we keep stressing to them, how do you want to be remembered? You're the class of 2019. What are they going to say about you in history? And tomorrow presents an unbelievable opportunity for these guys to really make a mark,” he added.

The Pakistan coach, however, tried to play down the hype given to Pakistan vs India encounters saying that this game offers same number of points that any other game at the tournament offers.

“There's always pressure in any game, and these games carry exactly the same amount of points. They carry two points. Obviously, there's a massive hype that's created a lot of time by the media really. Our guys are prepared. We're ready. We're comfortable that we can get out there and perform, and we are so excited about the opportunity tomorrow,” he said.

The Pakistan coach also added that team has moved on from Champions Trophy win as it has been two years to that win now and players are focused on Sunday’s game against the arch-rivals.

He added that Pakistan team hasn’t been able to put the perfect game yet and once they play perfectly, they can beat any team in the world.

Replying to a question, Arthur said that the unpredictable tag makes Pakistan an exciting team, although he doesn’t like the tag.

He also emphasised the need to improve standards of fielding in the game against India.

“Fielding is an attitude. Batting and bowling is something that you can't really control because you're up against somebody else. Fielding, you can control. You can control your attitude in the field,” he said.

“The message for the boys tomorrow is not to hold back. We want to leave everything out on the ground, whether that's with bat, ball, or in the field. And if we do that, if we do that and not play a tentative game, we play a game where we take the game on, which has been our mantra for a period of time now, hopefully, it clicks and everything goes well,” Arthur highlighted

PPP's Senator granted protective bail by Islamabad sessions court

PPP's Senator granted protective bail by Islamabad sessions court
Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, the spokesperson for Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, was granted protective bail by the Islamabad District and Sessions Court on Saturday.

Prior to Khokhar's appearance in court today, roads leading to the court were blocked by police who made every attempt to arrest him.

Khokhar has been accused of creating obstacles in the way of PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari's arrest on June 10 in the fake accounts case. A first information report (FIR) was registered against Khokhar that day at the Margalla police station and was sealed.

"A false and baseless FIR was registered at the behest of the government," said Khokhar whilst speaking to media after obtaining bail.

"Such machinations cannot detract us from our struggle against the government," he added.

He said that the Imran Khan government had been "blinded by revenge and had crossed all limits whilst pursuing it".

This was not the first instance this year that a case was registered against the PPP spokesperson.

In March, Khokhar and PPP Islamabad chapter President Raja Shakeel were booked for rioting and attacking police officials during PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto and Zardari's appearance before NAB Rawalpindi.

CWC2019: Australia given a target of 334 to Sri Lanka

Australia vs Sri Lanka
Australia captain Aaron Finch led by example, hitting a masterful 153 to put the World Cup holders in control of Saturday’s match by scoring 334 for seven against Sri Lanka at the Oval.

Finch reached his ton in 97 balls with eight fours and four sixes, bringing up his hundred with a maximum off Milinda Siriwardana.

It was his 14th one-day international century and the second of his World Cup career.

With Finch in peak form, Australia moved onto 190 for two after 34 overs as they chased a big score to put Sri Lanka under pressure.

Australia are searching for their fourth win in five matches after beating Afghanistan, the West Indies and Pakistan, with their lone defeat coming against India.

Together with opening partner David Warner, Finch carved up the rusty Sri Lanka attack after being put in to bat under cloudy skies in south London.

Three sloppy pieces of Sri Lanka fielding in the space of eight balls led to six extra runs for Australia.

Finch and Warner were already well on top without Sri Lanka’s mistakes and they reached their 50 partnership in 57 balls.

It was their fourth opening stand of at least 50 in the tournament and their 19th in all ODIs.

Finch survived an lbw replay review when he was on 35 as he progressed serenely towards his century.

Warner was the first Australian to perish when he was bowled by spinner Dhananjaya de Silva for 26.

De Silva struck again when Usman Khawaja (10) played a loose shot straight down the throat of Isuru Udana at deep square leg to leave Australia 100-2.

That brought Steve Smith to the crease and triggered the now-standard smattering of boos from the non-Australians in the crowd in reference to his role in the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa last year.

But Smith has been in fine form since returning from his ball-tampering ban and his presence freed Finch to go for broke.

Finch stepped on the gas to take 20 runs, including two sixes, off De Silva’s eighth over.

Sri Lanka’s previous two matches against Pakistan and Bangladesh had been abandoned due to rain, meaning they were back in action for the first time in 11 days.

That frustrating down-time allowed grievances to fester and team manager Ashantha de Mel took a swipe at World Cup organisers for allegedly giving preferential treatment to other countries.

De Mel blasted the quality of pitches, practice facilities, transport and accommodation at the World Cup, prompting a stern defence from the International Cricket Council.

Crushed by New Zealand in their opening game, Sri Lanka had bounced back to beat minnows Afghanistan in another rain-affected clash.

Heer Maan Ja to send a message about honour killing: Imran Kazmi

Upcoming rom-com Heer Maan Ja,
Upcoming rom-com Heer Maan Ja, starring Hareem Farooq and Ali Rehman Khan, will be more than just a laugh riot.

Producer Imran Kazmi says like all the films made by his usual team, this one will come with "some subliinal messages".

"Like all our films, we will delicately touch on a social message. In Siyaah, we touched on black magic, in Janaan we talked about pedophilia, in Parchi we pushed for a female protagonist. In Heer Maan Ja, we will lightly discuss honour killing... and how in our society women are still suppressed in some households."

Heer Maan Ja will follow how the life of Heer, a young woman from a slightly conservative household, intersects with Kabir's, a passionate architect who only has skyscrappers on his mind. However, when the two characters meet, their lives take an unexpected turn. We'll have to watch the film to find out what that was!

"They're both very different chararacters and don't always agree with each other," adds Kazmi.

Talking about his character Kabir, Ali Rehman added, "This is the most fun I've had while working on a character. I always like to reinvent myself every time when I try to do a character and I hope that comes through when people see Kabir. I've tried hard to distinguish him from my other roles."

Heer Ranjha will release on Eid ul Azha.

NA session ends in chaos as government lawmakers chant slogans against opposition leader

NA session ends in chaos as government lawmakers chant slogans against opposition leader
The session of the National Assembly descended into utter disorder on Friday, marred by chants and slogans from the treasury benches against the opposition leader.

Chaos continued in the House as Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri repeatedly urged Leader of the Opposition Shehbaz Sharif to start his speech on the federal budget.

Members of the government chanted slogans against the opposition leader as he continued to try to speak—an episode which lasted more than 45 minutes as the opposition leader stood up and sat back down several times.

The session comes after the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government presented the federal budget in the National Assembly on Wednesday, its first budget since coming to power in July. But there was pandemonium in the lower house as opposition benches erupted in outrage.

Friday's session was subsequently adjourned until Monday as the deputy speaker failed to bring order to the house.

At a joint press conference following the assembly session, opposition leaders criticised members of the government for disrupting the order in the House.

The government does not want the budget session to continue, said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Asif said, claiming he had heard that ministers were ordered to disrupt the session on orders from the leadership.

"Opposition leaders want to debate on the budget, but the government does not want that. We want the budget to be passed," former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi told reporters.

"We want to provide relief to the masses, but the government does not wish that to happen."

"The opposition leader had to start the budget debate, but government lawmakers continued to make a noise in the House. They don't even know that it is the opposition leader who starts the budget debate," said former prime minister and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Raja Pervez Ashraf.

"This is a puppet government. They do what they are told. They did not prepare this budget, the IMF did."

NAB arrests Faryal Talpur in fake bank accounts case

Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Faryal Talpur
The National Accountability Bureau on Friday arrested Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Faryal Talpur from Islamabad in a case related to money laundering through alleged fake bank accounts.

Talpur's arrest comes after her brother, former president and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, was arrested by the anti-graft body earlier this week.

On Monday, the Islamabad High Court rejected the two leaders' bail plea in connection to a high-profile case of money laundering allegedly through fake banks accounts.

In its orders, the Islamabad High Court allowed the NAB to arrest Zardari and Talpur, both of whom now have the option to appeal the order in the Supreme Court.

The NAB is investigating four cases where the former president and his sister are the prime accused.

The cases pertain to transactions worth hundreds of millions of rupees to the two leaders' private companies, allegedly, through fake bank accounts.

According to sources, an arrest warrant signed for Faryal Talpur by NAB Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal was handed to NAB Rawalpindi three days ago, following which NAB Rawalpindi constituted a team to arrest the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader.

Officials said NAB will not shift Talpur to their offices but would keep her under custody at her Islamabad residence, which has been declared a sub-jail for this purpose.

NAB officials have also summoned a team of doctors at the sub-jail to conduct Talpur's medical examination.

The Bureau is expected to present Talpur in an accountability court on Saturday to seek her physical remand.

SJC hears references against Justice Qazi Faez Isa, SHC judge

Supreme Court judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa
The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) heard references filed against Supreme Court judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Sindh High Court (SHC) Judge KK Agha today.

The government had filed references against two superior court judges, Justice Isa and Judge Agha in the SJC after complaints were received against judges for owning properties abroad but did not mention them in their wealth statements.

President Arif Alvi had forwarded the references to the SJC.

The SJC session was chaired by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and attended by Supreme Court judges Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh. The session was also attended by Chief Justice Sindh High Court Ali Ahmed Sheikh and Chief Justice Peshawar High Court Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth.

The Attorney General of Pakistan appeared before the SJC. He did not provide any information to journalists on the proceedings of the session.

The SJC is the only constitutional authority mandated by Article 209 of the Constitution of Pakistan to conduct inquiries into allegations of incapacity or misconduct against a judge of the Supreme Court or of a high court.

It comprises chief justice of Pakistan as chairman, two senior-most judges of the Supreme Court and two senior most judges of the high courts as members.

Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Amanullah Kanrani while speaking to reporters in Islamabad on Thursday said, lawyers across the country will boycott courts today (Friday).

Kanrani said the reference filed against Justice Isa cannot be called an official one in legal terms at present.

"The matter, right now, is between the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and the Attorney General," he said. "The matter is in its initial stages."

However, he added that till the SJC did not deem it fit enough to make a case for action, the reference was "just a mere piece of paper".

Lawyers across the country are boycotting courts against the references filed against Justice Isa and SHC judge.

Lawyers in Dir Bala, Sukkur and Gujrat have boycotted courts and are protesting and have been sporting black armbands to stand against the references.

In Islamabad, lawyers have partially boycotted courts. Only those lawyers with urgent cases have appeared in the court for hearings.

The Islamabad High Court and District Bar Council are on a strike on the call of the Pakistan Bar Council.

In Chakwal, lawyers have been divided over the call for strike by the Pakistan Bar Council.

In Balochistan, lawyers have been protesting in the premises of the Balochistan High Court. Lawyers in Khuzdar have also boycotted courts and are protesting on the call given by the Supreme Court Bar Association.

In Sindh, high court circuit bench and others are protesting on the call of the Sindh Bar Council. Lawyers in Hyderabad, Larkana and Jacobabad are on strike.

In Karachi, lawyers have been divided into two groups over the call for a strike.

However, in Punjab, lawyers have refused to partake in the strike.

Courts are in session in Lahore and Rajanpur per schedule while lawyers in Multan and Muzaffargarh are on a partial strike.

On Thursday, it was reported that former chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry wrote a letter to the SJC over the government’s reference against Justice Isa.

Former CJP Chaudhry, in his letter, stressed that sending a reference to the SJC without following procedures was in violation of the Constitution and law.

The letter further read that it was not stated anywhere in the reference that Justice Isa had violated the Article of the Code of Conduct. It added that due to the reference, the judge and institution of the judiciary, as a whole, had been scandalised.

According to Chaudhry, the reference — being against constitutional provisions, untrue, without substances, and motivated — may not be entertained and be rejected without further proceedings.

Chaudhry had said the SJC should take action against the president and prime minister for violating their oath.

In a letter written to President Alvi last month, Justice Isa requested confirmation of whether the reference filed against him was under Article 209 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
