Pakistan rejects Indian bid to deny EU DisinfoLab report

spokesperson foreign office
Pakistan has rejected the Indian attempt to deny responsibility for the elaborate and reprehensible global disinformation campaign against Pakistan exposed by EU DisinfoLab.

In a statement, Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said that the independent, non-profit disinformation watchdog’s latest report illustrates in graphic detail the web of more than 750 media in 116 countries; over 550 website domain names registered; resurrection of dead people; impersonation of EU institutions and direct control of more than 10 NGOs accredited to the UN Human Rights Council, utilized for the purpose of pushing fake news and false Indian propaganda against Pakistan since 2005.

He maintained that the Indian ministry of external affairs’ tall claims have no legs to stand on. The spokesperson said that the latest developments and international exposés have clearly shown that India is neither ‘responsible’ nor a ‘democracy’.

“We have already shared extensive and irrefutable evidence of India’s active planning, promoting, aiding, abetting, financing and executing terrorist activities in Pakistan.”

Hafeez Chaudhri said that the report by EU DisinfoLab goes to further corroborate our long-held position about India’s incurable obsession with Pakistan and its unrelenting smear campaign against Pakistan.

“We urge the UN Human Rights machinery, particularly the Human Rights Council (HRC), to take a serious look as to how a prestigious platform such as the HRC could be misused in such a manner against a member state,” he added.

“The relevant authorities in Switzerland and Belgium must investigate the finances and transparency of the relevant NGOs registered within their jurisdiction.”

He said, “We also reiterate our call that the EU authorities take full cognizance of this massive disinformation campaign against Pakistan and initiate steps to hold accountable those who misused their procedures and abused the European institutions.”

The spokesperson said that the latest revelations have established that no amount of Indian falsehoods can succeed in diverting attention from India’s unspeakable crimes in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and in misleading the world community.

While countering India’s state-terrorism and exposing its false narratives, Pakistan remains fully committed to supporting the Kashmiris in their legitimate struggle for the right to self-determination as per the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, he added.

Facebook faces US lawsuits that could force sale of Instagram, WhatsApp

Facebook faces US lawsuits that could force sale of Instagram, WhatsApp
Facebook Inc could be forced to sell its prized assets WhatsApp and Instagram after the US Federal Trade Commission and nearly every US state filed lawsuits on Wednesday against the social media company, saying it used a “buy or bury” strategy to snap up rivals and keep smaller competitors at bay.

With the filing of the twin lawsuits, Facebook became the second big tech company to face a major legal challenge this year after the US Justice Department sued Alphabet Inc’s Google in October, accusing the $1 trillion company of using its market power to fend off rivals.

The lawsuits highlight the growing bipartisan consensus to hold Big Tech accountable for its business practices and mark a rare moment of agreement between the Trump administration and Democrats, some of whom have advocated breaking up both Google and Facebook.

The complaints on Wednesday accuse Facebook of buying up rivals, focusing specifically on its previous acquisitions of photo-sharing app Instagram for $1 billion in 2012 and messaging app WhatsApp for $19bn in 2014.

Federal and state regulators said the acquisitions should be unwound _ a move that is likely to set off a long legal challenge as the deals were cleared years earlier by the FTC.

“For nearly a decade, Facebook has used its dominance and monopoly power to crush smaller rivals, snuff out competition, all at the expense of everyday users,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James on behalf of the coalition of 46 states, Washington DC and Guam.

Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and South Dakota did not participate in the lawsuit.

James said the company acquired rivals before they could threaten its dominance.

Facebook’s counsel Jennifer Newstead called the lawsuits “revisionist history” and said antitrust laws do not exist to punish “successful companies”. She said WhatsApp and Instagram have succeeded after Facebook invested billions of dollars in growing the apps.

“The government now wants a do-over, sending a chilling warning to American business that no sale is ever final,” Newstead said.

She also raised doubts about alleged harms caused by Facebook, arguing that consumers benefited from its decision to make WhatsApp free, and rivals like YouTube, Twitter and WeChat did “just fine” without access to its developer platform.

In a post on Facebook’s internal discussion platform, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg told employees he did not anticipate “any impact on individual teams or roles” as a result of the lawsuits, which he said were “one step in a process which could take years to play out in its entirety”.

Comments were turned off for Zuckerberg’s post, as well as for other posts on the lawsuits shared by Newstead and Chief Privacy Officer for Product Michel Protti. Newstead also warned employees not to post about the cases.

Facebook did not immediately respond to questions about the posts.

Zuckerberg told employees in July that Facebook would “go to the mat” to fight a legal challenge to break up the company, calling it an “existential” threat, according to an audio of internal company meetings published by The Verge.

Williamson pulls out of final WI Test after abrupt U-turn

Williamson pulls out of final WI Test after abrupt U-turn
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson on Thursday pulled out of the second Test against the West Indies at Basin Reserve in Wellington as he awaits the imminent arrival of his first child.

The abrupt U-turn came just hours after batting mainstay Williamson had told head coach Gary Stead he would play in the match, which begins on Friday.

Williamson had flown home to Tauranga, 500 kilometres from Wellington, to be with his wife Sarah on the eve of the match.

After confirming his availability he flew back to Wellington where, after further discussions with Stead, he agreed it would be best if he returned to be with his wife.

“It’s a decision that we’ve come to around the best interests for him and for Sarah, and also for our team,” Stead said.

Williamson had previously said the baby was due ‘mid-to-late December’.

Cricket does not allow for substitutions if he had needed to leave during the Test.

“He isn’t the first person to have a baby and miss a Test match so our thoughts and wishes are with Sarah and Kane at this time and we want to make sure first and foremost the mother and baby are well looked after,” Stead added.

Williamson, ranked the second-best batsman in the world behind Australian Steve Smith and equal with India’s Virat Kohli, provided the backbone of New Zealand’s comprehensive innings victory in the first Test last weekend with an epic career-best 251.

Dad-to-be Kohli will leave Australia after the opening Test in Adelaide next week to return home for the birth of his first child, meaning he will almost certainly miss the final three matches of the series.

In a hasty reshuffle, Tom Latham will take over as captain for New Zealand and Will Young, who opened the batting in the first Test, will take Williamson’s place at number three.

With B.J. Watling recovered from his hamstring strain to resume his role as wicketkeeper it allows the first Test gloveman Tom Blundell to open the innings with Latham.

Stead said the only issue still to be resolved was whether to replace all-rounder Daryl Mitchell with spinner Mitchell Santner.

The West Indies named Joshua da Silva to make his debut, replacing injured wicket-keeper Shane Dowrich, but delayed confirming the rest of their line-up until seeing the pitch in the morning.

There will be at least one more change with pace bowler Kemar Roach having returned home following the death of his father.

Strong wind gusts up to 120 kilometres per hour (75mph) are forecast for the opening day which would make life difficult for bowlers who, on the plus side, could expect another typical New Zealand green wicket.

“You’ve just got to keep your head down a little longer and try to push through the wind,” said West Indies captain Jason Holder, who described the wicket as having ‘just as much grass if not more’ than the emerald Hamilton surface.

Holder said it was important for his side to make amends for their poor showing in Hamilton.

“We let ourselves down in the first Test match but we have to keep going,” he said, but he did not believe the performance was as bad as the result made it seem. “You look at the ability and what this team can produce, it’s there. We’ve done it before.”

Iran to produce 1.3 million cars next year amid sanctions

Iran to produce 1.3 million cars next year amid sanctions
Iranian automakers will produce more than 1.3 million cars next year, marking a 50 percent jump in production in the face of US sanctions, a deputy industry minister says.

Iran Khodro (IKCO) and Saipa are the two largest local manufacturers, which have picked up the slack since France’s Peugeot and Renault exited Iran along with other international companies in the wake of US sanctions in 2018, creating a supply crunch which saw car prices vault to unprecedented highs.

As the fallout from the sudden exit of foreign companies began to roll in, the two car makers pooled up local manufacturers of parts to produce Iranian-made vehicles. The defense ministry joined in to manufacture hi-tech auto parts which Iran used to import.

According to a local auto maker, 154 major auto parts have been internally produced, saving the country some 400 million euros in foreign exchange.

“To internally produce auto parts, we have started 82 in-house manufacturing projects with the Ministry of Defense and knowledge-based companies and the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology,” Saipa CEO Seyyed Javad Soleimani said Tuesday.

More than 100,000 people are employed by IKCO and Saipa, while another 700,000 Iranians work in industries related to car manufacturing. The auto industry is only second to Iran's energy sector, accounting for some 10 percent of the gross domestic product and 4 percent of employment.

When the Trump administration reimposed sanctions on Iran in August 2018, it reserved Washington’s first hammer blow for the car industry to hurt as many Iranians as possible.

Ironically, the US pressures helped domestic manufacturers thrive under the new situation through mobilizing their resources to fulfill some of the tasks which were an exclusive competence of foreign companies.

Local manufacturers are now producing a wide range of parts such as automotive immobilizers that allow the engine to start only with the vehicle's authorized key, electronic control units, oxygen sensors, electric seats, electric steering, six-speed automatic transmission, polymeric materials, modulators, injectors, airbags, multimedia, direct current (DC) motors, all types of electrical sensors and digital front amplifiers.

The K132 sedan, the first Iran-made car using 90% locally-manufactured parts, is about to roll off the IKCO’s mass production line in February. IKCO's rival will produce Saipa Shahin compact sedan, which is 92% reliant on locally-manufactured parts.

However, Iranian manufacturers are worried that a possible opening in Tehran's ties with the West after Trump leaves office could lead to the return of foreign car makers and send them back to square one.

In the past, despite pledges of tough reckoning by Iranian officials, foreign companies have had little trouble whenever they have decided to return to Iran’s massive auto market, pushing the local manufacturers to the sidelines.

Peugeot and Renault were among the first European companies which rushed to Iran to tap a pent-up demand for new automobiles after sanctions were lifted on the country in 2016.

Peugeot signed production deals worth 700 million euros with Iranian counterparts, while Renault had announced a new plant investment to increase its production capacity in Iran to 350,000 vehicles a year.

Their withdrawal in 2018 was their second cut and run departure after they suddenly left Iran first in 2012 when the country came under intensified Western sanctions.

Iran’s automotive industry officials had promised that the French companies would face a rough ride for their return to the country and that they would not be allowed to leave without retribution.

Their second pullout, even though they did not have a significant presence in the US, followed similar moves by French energy companies Total and Engie and Germany's Daimler AG, the maker of Mercedes-Benz trucks and luxury cars.

They joined jet makers Airbus and Boeing to slam the door in Iran's face after President Donald Trump decided to impose sanctions on Iran following his withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.

On Tuesday, Iran’s Deputy Industry Minister Mohsen Salehinia apparently sought to assure that local manufacturers would not be given a short shrift this time if another opening with the West took place.

Iran’s “automakers will produce more than 1.3 million cars next year,” he told a meeting of the National Production Support Commission with manufacturers.

“The goal is to have a 50% jump in car production from the beginning of Day (December 21, 2020) to Tir (June 22, 2021) next year for six months,” he said.

Secretary of Iran’s National Space and Advanced Transportation Administration Manuchehr Manteghi said at present, the price of domestically produced cars is more than 6,000 dollars, which can be reduced by better sourcing of local capabilities.

“If low-tech component manufacturers are assembled together, with the right investment, they can reduce their finished costs,” he said.

In his administration, Manteghi said, Iranian experts are currently re-engineering some cars in an effort to use domestic products such as steel.

“With regard to advanced parts, we will also move towards the use of domestic technologies and domestic production,” he added.

According to Saipa CEO Soleimani, each Iranian-made car uses up some $2,000 of foreign exchange, including $600 in imported raw materials which the country is trying to substitute with local products.

US Senate stops debate on arms sales to UAE after veto threat

US Senate
An effort to stop President Donald Trump’s high-tech weapons deals with the United Arab Emirates fell short on Wednesday in the US Senate as Trump’s fellow Republicans opposed resolutions of disapproval seeking to block the sale of drones and advanced F-35 fighter jets.

The Senate voted 50-46 and 49-47, mostly along party lines, to stop consideration of the resolutions, killing them at least until President-elect Joe Biden takes office on Jan 20.

Biden, a Democrat, is expected to review the sales.

Early on Wednesday, the Trump administration had issued a formal notice of its intention to veto the measures if they passed the Senate and House of Representatives.

The White House said the sales support US foreign policy and national security objectives by “enabling the UAE to deter increasing Iranian aggressive behavior and threats” in the wake of its recent peace deal with Israel.

Backers of the sale also described the UAE as an important US partner in the Middle East.

The two weapons packages are a major component of a planned $23 billion sale of high-tech armaments to the UAE. Opponents said the transactions were being rushed through, without sufficient assurances that the equipment would not fall into the wrong hands or fuel instability in the Middle East.

Some US lawmakers also criticised the UAE for its involvement in the war in Yemen, a conflict considered one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters. The administration told Congress in November it had approved the massive sale to the UAE of products from General Atomics, Lockheed Martin Corp and Raytheon Technologies Corp.

Some lawmakers also worried that the weapons transfers might violate US guarantees that Israel will retain a military advantage in the region. But Israel, which enjoys strong support in Congress, has said it does not object to the sales.

Accusing Trump of cutting short or sidestepping Congress’ typical review of major weapons sales, lawmakers have tried repeatedly during Trump’s four-year presidency to block his plans for arms sales.

None of the efforts succeeded, either dying in the Republican-led Senate or, if passed, failing to win the two-thirds majorities in the Senate and House to override Trump’s vetoes.

The PPP chair, stressing that the people of Pakistan are in favour of democratic forces, said that the government and its" facilitators" should know that they will not be able to stand between the masses and their aspirations for long.

"We believe that the PDM's first phase has been successful, and after December 13, we will enter the second phase. And all of you will see that this government will pack its bags itself," he said.

Bilawal, replying to a question, said that all the parties in PDM were political parties and that they would not want to create such a situation that benefits a "third force".

Speaking on the decision to submit resignations, Bilawal said that he would take the matter up with his party's Central Executive Committee.

Meanwhile, Maryam thanked Bilawal for inquiring about PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif's health and expressing his condolences over her grandmother, Shamim Akhtar's, death.

"We ate together [..] and spoke on several matters of PDM and the upcoming jalsa," she said.

The PML-N vice-president, slamming the Centre, said that they were considering holding a dialogue "after they realised that their government is slipping away from them".

Maryam reiterated that the jalsa would be held at Minar-e-Pakistan.

The PPP chairperson had visited the PML-N vice-president at Lahore’s Jati Umrah today afternoon.

Bilawal reached Lahore Thursday and held a meeting with party stalwarts to devise a strategy for the upcoming PDM jalsa at the Minar-e-Pakistan on December 13.

PML-N leaders have said that "big decisions" are expected to take place at the jalsa with many political analysts predicting the PDM lawmakers will announce resigning from the provincial and national assemblies.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that if the Opposition lawmakers resign from parliament, the government will hold by-elections on their seats "and come back with more strength".

Government won't allow PDM Lahore jalsa
Earlier in the day, Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat reiterated that the government will not grant permission for PDM's December 13 jalsa in Lahore.

He made the statement after a meeting with intelligence officers and the home secretary. Basharat said action will be taken against the organisers and facilitators of jalsas and rallies.

PM Imran Khan going nowhere with your 'copied' Minar-e-Pakistan rally, Sheikh Rashid tells Opposition

Minister for Interior, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed
In his first press conference after being appointed Minister for Interior, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Friday lambasted the Pakistan Democratic Movement and said that Prime Minister Imran Khan is not going anywhere, not in the least with a "copied" Minar-e-Pakistan rally.

He claimed that if this is the sort of the Opposition that will go to the elections next term, PM Imran Khan will emerge the victor once again.

He said that if the Opposition has deluded itself into thinking that they will be able to "copy Imran Khan" and hold a massive rally at Minar-e-Pakistan, "they must know that Imran Khan was blessed and rose to the top, whereas the Minar-e-Pakistan rally will only be the political downfall of the Opposition".

The minister said that if the Opposition wishes to "march to Islamabad", they are welcome.

"We, too, staged a sit-in here for 126 days. It made no difference whatsoever," he said, also criticising the choice of winter months for a protest.

Sheikh Rashid said for the sake of "saving their children" the leaders of Opposition parties sought nationalities of other countries. "When your own children cry (injustice), you are pained to see that, but when the child of a poor man is ill with the virus, it is [but the mere inconvenience of] a headache for you," he said to the Opposition.

He said any efforts to bring down Pakistan's economy will fail.

Sheikh Rashid, also declared that he, as interior minister, stands behind "all Islamic forces" and "will be their voice".

"All our madressahs stand as the pillars of Islam," he added.

The minister said that there is no danger to Pakistan from the borders due to our valiant soldiers stationed there and at the ready.

"This country is at risk from factors at play within. There is foreign investment being made in the country so chaos can spread and those who are doing so will fail," he said.

He criticised the Opposition for creating hurdles in the way of "the politics of truth".

"They say they will not speak to the prime minister. Then whom do you wish to speak to?" he asked, before adding: "They only wish to save their ill-gotten wealth and rid themselves of cases."

In a cryptic message before wrapping up his address, he said: "On December 14, 15, 16 we will bring good news for Prime Minister Imran Khan. There will be nothing but success for the government and failure for this lot."

While holding a press conference along with Special Assistant to PM for National Security Moeed Yusuf, the minister said that the EU DisinfoLab’s investigative report, titled “Indian Chronicles,” has supported the stance of Pakistan.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister’s National Security Advisor Moeed Yusuf said these Indian actions involve criminality and breach of international law that should be raised at global level.

He said Pakistan will pursue proactive policy and we will convey our narrative and stance to every possible forum.

The special assistant said our paradigm is based on economic security and peace while India is pursuing the agenda to hinder Pakistan s development.

He said all such hybrid war tactics of India will be foiled.

Time magazine has named Joe Biden and Kamala Harris 2020's Person of the Year.

Time magazine has named Joe Biden and Kamala Harris 2020's Person of the Year.
The two made history on November 7 when they beat Donald Trump in a bitter election that put him in a small club of presidents who served only one term. Harris on that day became the country's first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president-elect.

"For changing the American story, for showing that the forces of empathy are greater than the furies of division, for sharing a vision of healing in a grieving world, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are TIME's 2020 Person of the Year," wrote Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal.

Zoom CEO Eric Yuan was named Businessperson of the Year. The video chat service spiked in popularity amid a health crisis that forced people to work and learn from home.

In the category of Guardians of the Year, Time named activists Assa Traoré, Porche Bennett-Bey and racial-justice organizers; frontline health workers fighting the pandemic; and Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Time magazine's tradition of singling out an especially influential person started in 1927, launching as Man of the Year. The name was later changed to Person of the Year, which is bestowed on an individual, a group, a movement or an idea that had the most influence in the past year. In 2006, Time named "You" as Person of the Year to recognize the millions of people who contribute to content on the internet. Not everyone who made the cut wielded positive influence. Adolf Hitler, for example, was Man of the Year in 1938. In 2019, Time picked young climate activist, Greta Thunberg.

The shortlist unveiled earlier Thursday was a clear reflection of the year's most dramatic events. Biden, Trump, Frontline Health Care Workers and Dr. Fauci and the Movement for Racial Justice were all major characters in a tumultuous year that included a deadly pandemic, social unrest over racial injustices and a contentious election.

NBA star LeBron James was named Athlete of the Year and Korean pop group BTS was Entertainer of the Year, both of which were revealed on NBC's "Today" show Thursday morning. The Person of the Year was introduced in a special prime time broadcast on the network, marking the first time that NBC has partnered with the magazine's Emmy-winning Time Studios on coverage of this scale for Person of the Year.
Actors Issa Rae and Matthew McConaughey kicked off the hour-long, star-studded event that included appearances by Vanessa Bryant, John Cena, Yo Yo Ma, BTS and H.E.R. Bruce Springsteen presented the Person of the Year.

Time expanded its Person of the Year franchise last year by introducing four additional categories including Businessperson of the Year. The decision came after Salesforce (CRM) CEO Marc Benioff and his wife Lynne Benioff bought Time in 2018 from magazine conglomerate Meredith Corp (MDP), which had acquired Time Inc. in 2017.

Sindh approaches WHO to provide free coronavirus vaccine to underprivileged people
Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho has sought the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) assistance for procurement and provision of the best-available coronavirus vaccine for the impoverished people in Sindh.

She said that the vaccine should be available to those who could not afford it, who have comorbidities, and who are the front-liners serving in the health sector.

Speaking on the inauguration of the refurbished Expanded Program on Immunisation (EPI) centres with the help of WHO on Thursday, Pechuho said: “We should start preparing a plan for the procurement, storage, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccine so that when we have it in our hands, we are able to use it effectively."

We need WHO’s assistance in its procurement, storage, cold-chain management, and distribution so that we could vaccinate our elderly people and those who have comorbidities but they can’t afford it, she stressed.
So far, the global health agency has provided six mobile vaccination vans to the EPI Sindh for each district of Karachi which would be used for routine vaccination, provision of health services, and nutrition support services.
WHO has also donated several other vehicles for monitoring activities refurbished nine vaccination centres in the city and provided a 500-kilovolt generator for uninterrupted power supply to the EPI for maintaining a cold chain for the storage of important vaccines in the EPI programme.
WHO’s country representative to Pakistan Dr Palitha Gunarathna Mahipala maintained that every time he came to Sindh, he saw improvement in its health sector.
“We have refurbished nine vaccination centres in Sindh and are going to refurbish 345 more such centres at the cost of USD1.4 million which is equal to over Rs200 million Pakistani rupees."

"Today we have donated vans for vaccination in six districts of Karachi and several other vehicles. We would provide mobile vans for all the districts of Sindh while we are donating tons of other material in the health sector,” he added.

First rail network opens between Iran and Afghanistan

First rail network opens between Iran and Afghanistan
An Iranian goods train carrying tonnes of agricultural products chugged into a western Afghan province Thursday as the two countries marked the opening of their first shared railway network.

The train route so far links the Iranian city of Khaf with the Afghan town of Rozanak about 150 kilometres (95 miles) away, but is scheduled to be expanded to reach Herat, Afghanistan’s third largest city.

Crowds of Afghans gathered at Rozanak station for the arrival of the first blue painted train.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, addressing the ceremony via video link, welcomed the move as an “important step for economic revival and development in both the countries”.

The project was a gateway to Europe for Afghanistan, said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

“I see the prosperity of Iran and Afghanistan in this railway,” he said, also speaking via video link from Tehran.

“The development, security and stability of Afghanistan (contributes to) development, security and stability in Iran and the entire region.”

Residents of Rozanak welcomed the new link.

“It is going to change our villages, towns and cities into business hubs,” said Arbab Ghulam Reza, a farmer from Rozanak.

“It was also very difficult for our young boys to go to Iran for work. Now they can simply buy a train ticket and go.”

Once completed, the 225 kilometre network would help transport six million tonnes of goods and a million passengers annually, officials said.

The Khaf-Herat network would later be connected to Central Asian and Chinese rail networks, officials said. Decades of war and neglect have destroyed Afghanistan’s infrastructure, making its roads and bridges nearly impassable.

But despite the worsening security situation, efforts to rebuild roads and railway networks have always been a top priority of the Afghan government and the donor community. In 2016, the first railway link between northern neighbour Turkmenistan and Afghanistan opened. That link is planned to eventually extend to Tajikistan.

Coronavirus entered Afghanistan in February, as thousands of migrants returned from neighbouring Iran, which at the time was the region’s worst-hit nation. Afghanistan briefly suspended land and air routes with Iran, before reopening all of its borders with the country.

Facebook faces U.S. lawsuits that could force sale of Instagram, WhatsApp

Facebook faces U.S. lawsuits that could force sale of Instagram, WhatsApp
Facebook Inc could be forced to sell its prized assets WhatsApp and Instagram after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and nearly every U.S. state filed lawsuits against the social media company.

With the filing of the twin lawsuits on Wednesday, Facebook becomes the second big tech company to face a major legal challenge this year after the U.S. Justice Department sued Alphabet Inc’s Google in October, accusing the $1 trillion company of using its market power to fend off rivals.

The lawsuits highlight the growing bipartisan consensus to hold Big Tech accountable for its business practices and mark a rare moment of agreement between the Trump administration and Democrats, some of whom have advocated breaking up both Google and Facebook.

The complaints on Wednesday accuse Facebook of buying up rivals, focusing specifically on its previous acquisitions of photo-sharing app Instagram for $1 billion in 2012 and messaging app WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014.

Federal and state regulators said the acquisitions should be unwound – a move that is likely to set off a long legal challenge as the deals were cleared years earlier by the FTC.

“For nearly a decade, Facebook has used its dominance and monopoly power to crush smaller rivals, snuff out competition, all at the expense of everyday users,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James on behalf of the coalition of 46 states, Washington, D.C. and Guam. Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and South Dakota did not participate in the lawsuit.

James said the company acquired rivals before they could threaten the company’s dominance.

Facebook’s general counsel Jennifer Newstead called the lawsuits “revisionist history” and said antitrust laws do not exist to punish “successful companies.” She said WhatsApp and Instagram have succeeded after Facebook invested billions of dollars in growing the apps.

“The government now wants a do-over, sending a chilling warning to American business that no sale is ever final,” Newstead said.

Newstead also raised doubts about alleged harms caused by Facebook, arguing that consumers benefited from its decision to make WhatsApp free, and rivals like YouTube, Twitter and WeChat did “just fine” without access to its developer platform.

In a post on Facebook’s internal discussion platform, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg told employees he did not anticipate “any impact on individual teams or roles” as a result of the lawsuits, which he said were “one step in a process which could take years to play out in its entirety.”

Comments were turned off for Zuckerberg’s post, as well as for other posts on the lawsuits shared by Newstead and Chief Privacy Officer for Product Michel Protti, according to copies viewed by Reuters. Newstead also warned employees not to post about the cases.

Facebook did not immediately respond to questions about the posts.
Zuckerberg told employees in July that Facebook would “go to the mat” to fight a legal challenge to break up the company, calling it an “existential” threat, according to audio of internal company meetings published by The Verge.

Although breakup remedies are rare, some antitrust experts said the case was unusually strong given damning statements by Zuckerberg plucked from Facebook’s own documents, like a 2008 email in which he said “it is better to buy than compete.”

Other experts such as Seth Bloom of Bloom Strategic Counsel said the FTC complaint was “significantly weaker” than the DOJ’s lawsuit against Google.

“We’re talking about acquisitions that are six or eight years old and it will be difficult for a court to order divestitures of many years ago,” Bloom said.

Investors echoed similar concerns.

“I do not know if the FTC or DOJ will be successful in breaking Facebook up. I’m assuming this will be dragged out in the courts as FB defends itself,” said Daniel Morgan, a portfolio manager at Synovus Trust in Atlanta, Georgia.

The lawsuits are the biggest antitrust cases in a generation, comparable to the lawsuit against Microsoft Corp in 1998. The federal government eventually settled that case, but the yearslong court fight and extended scrutiny prevented the company from thwarting competitors and is credited with clearing the way for the explosive growth of the internet.

Last month, Facebook said it was buying customer service start-up Kustomer, in an acquisition that the Wall Street Journal said valued Kustomer at $1 billion.

Facebook also bought Giphy, a popular website for making and sharing animated images, or GIFs, in May. That acquisition has already drawn scrutiny from the United Kingdom’s competition watchdog.

Facebook shares fell as much as 3% after the news before paring losses to close down 1.9%.

South Korean ultra-cold warehouse prepares to store Pfizer’s vaccine

South Korean ultra-cold warehouse prepares to store Pfizer’s vaccine
Some of the rooms in Korea Superfreeze Inc’s coldest warehouse are so frigid that a cup of warm water thrown into one will immediately turn into snow.

Located 65 km (40 miles) below Seoul and boasting temperatures frostier than an Antarctic winter, the facility would be the best, perhaps only, place in South Korea suitable for bulk storage of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, says company CEO Kim Jin-ha.

“As soon as we heard about the Pfizer vaccine, we started getting ready… other options wouldn’t work,” Kim told Reuters, adding that the warehouse’s use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to keep temperatures cool trumped electricity.

Warehouses which use electricity would have difficulty maintaining the -70 degrees Celsius (-94 F) required by the vaccine for storage and carry the risk of the temperature rising during a power blackout, he said.

The company, which is backed by Goldman Sachs and SK Holdings Co Ltd, has been in talks with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency since early November and while nothing is yet decided, expectations are high it will land a contract.

The agency has asked Korea Superfreeze to provide plans and cost estimates for storing and distributing vaccines, including how it would handle a scenario where vaccines would be shipped to 260 different locations, Kim said.

South Korea has arranged to buy 20 million doses of the vaccine developed by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech.

The country also has deals for 20 million doses each for the vaccines developed by Moderna Inc and AstraZeneca Plc/Oxford University and for another 4 million doses from Johnson & Johnson.

In total, that would be enough to inoculate 34 million people in a country of 51.8 million and shipments are expected to begin no later than March.

Kim said, however, it was not clear to him if the agency would tap the company for vaccines other than Pfizer’s which have less onerous cold storage requirements. Moderna’s vaccine can be stored for up to six months at -20 C while AstraZeneca’s vaccine needs only normal fridge temperatures.

To accommodate Pfizer’s vaccine, Korea Superfreeze is planning a dedicated passageway and elevator so there is no interference from outside temperatures. Once it confirms it has a contract, it will begin construction which may take 2-3 months.

The warehouse also has 220 closed-circuit cameras that monitor resting cargo round the clock, Kim said.

He added that South Korea and Japan were the only countries with LNG-powered facilities which can offer storage at these temperatures and that the warehouses in Japan were much smaller and more remotely located due to earthquake risks.

All in all, the Korea Superfreeze rooms capable of storing goods at -70 C add up to 1,600 square metres (17,222 square feet). But just how much of that will be needed remains unclear as the company has not yet ascertained how big the containers carrying the vaccines will be and how much will be shipped to South Korea at a time.

Kim said, however, that some regular customers of the storage facilities might have to be inconvenienced.

“For the tuna and other goods that are being kept here at -60 degrees, we’re going to have to ask their permission, compensate them for it and clear them out of here.”

China leads auto industry recovery with beyond-expectation sales

China leads auto industry recovery with beyond-expectation sales
China’s vehicle sales are likely to hit 25 million units this year, an industry body said on Friday, as the world’s biggest vehicle market continued to lead the global auto industry recovery from lows hit during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fu Bingfeng, executive vice chairman of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), told an annual conference of the association in Beijing that CAAM expects Chinese sales this year of over 20 million passenger vehicles and 5 million commercial vehicles, which include trucks and buses. China sold 25.77 million vehicles last year.

Bai Hua, an official at China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said China expects to sell over 1.3 million new energy vehicles (NEV) this year, up from 1.2 million units last year. NEVs include battery-powered electric, plug-in petrol-electric hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

CAAM also expects Chinese sales to modestly grow next year and hit 30 million units in 2025, Fu said.

As the global auto industry is hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, China has become a ray of hope for automakers including Volkswagen AG and General Motors Co. Global automakers including Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co Ltd have forecast higher profit on surging China sales.

US considers Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine approval

US considers Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine approval
US experts met Thursday to assess whether to grant emergency approval for Pfizer-BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine and allow America to become the next country to move ahead with mass immunization.

The independent committee of experts convened by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will hold a non-binding vote at the end of the day, and the US regulator will determine after that whether to issue an emergency use authorization (EUA).

The arguments in favor seem to be overwhelming — it has already been greenlit by Britain and Canada — and the full results of a huge clinical trial of the vaccine were published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine, another major milestone.

These confirmed it was 95 percent effective with no serious safety issues, an outcome that was described in an accompanying editorial as a “triumph.”

“The trial results are impressive enough to hold up in any conceivable analysis,” the editorial said.

Nevertheless, the two dozen voting members of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) were expected to mull outstanding issues closely in a live streamed event held over the course of the day.

These include difficult questions like when people who were on the placebo-arm of the trial should receive the vaccine, a tricky debate that weighs the need for more controlled data against paying back altruistic volunteers for their service.

– Distribution soon –

If the panel votes in favor, as they are expected to, FDA approval could come at any time.

“We could then have an EUA within days and be administering doses of vaccine to our most vulnerable next week,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Wednesday.

In a trial of almost 44,000 people, there were two deaths in the vaccine arm and four in the placebo, with none thought to be related to BNT162b2, the technical name for the jab.

The most common side effects were run of the mill for vaccines, such as injection site reactions, fatigue and headache.

But Britain on Wednesday reported that two health care workers developed significant allergic reactions to the vaccine as the country rolled out its massive drive Tuesday.

Should the US panel vote to approve, they will almost certainly recommend that people who are predisposed to allergic reactions should hold off on vaccination for now.

And, according to the FDA, there were four people in the vaccine arm’s subjects who developed Bell’s palsy — a facial paralysis condition that is usually temporary — but none in the placebo group.

“(The incidence) really very much mirrors what one would expect if you just took 20,000 people off the street,” Anthony Geraci, an associate professor of neurology at Hofstra University, told AFP — but the FDA recommended collecting more follow-up data.

The FDA has been praised for its diligence and transparency, which has helped restore its reputation that took a hit earlier on in the pandemic over perceptions that President Donald Trump had leaned on it to issue questionable authorizations.

These included the drug hydroxychloroquine as a Covid-19 treatment, which was later revoked.

– High efficacy –

The first vaccine dose begins to protect patients ten days after injection, and the booster shot reduces the risk of developing Covid-19 by 95 percent compared to being unvaccinated.

The best news is that it also seems to stop the most severe forms of the disease, said Yale vaccinologist Saad Omer.

It is not yet known how long the protection will last.

But top US government scientist Moncef Slaoui said Wednesday he was confident that, based on animal testing, the injection would create long-term immune memory rather than a response that quickly fades.

Another open question is how well the shot will stop virus transmission, and whether it will be effective in children, pregnant women, and the immunocompromised.

The next step is distribution, which is being coordinated by the federal government but handled by private partners like FedEx.

The first wave of shipments will include around three million doses, which will be transported from the Pfizer plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan in dry ice containers kept at -70 degrees Celsius (-94 degrees Fahrenheit).

From there it will ship out across the US, ready to be injected into the arms of long-term care facility residents and health care workers — the two groups standing at the front of a long line of Americans waiting their turns.

Belgium crowned FIFA team of year for third straight time

Belgium crowned FIFA team of year for third straight time
Belgium were crowned FIFA’s team of the year for the third straight time after retaining the top spot ahead of world champions France in the latest world rankings released on Thursday, soccer’s world governing body said.

While a total of 1,082 international games were played in 2019, the most since the rankings system was introduced in 1993, only 352 matches were held this year — the fewest since 1987 — due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Roberto Martinez’s Belgium won six of their eight games this year as they booked their place in next year’s UEFA Nations League finals.

The top four remained unchanged, with Brazil and England retaining their third and fourth ranking respectively.

Portugal moved up to fifth, while both Spain (sixth) and Argentina (seventh) improved two places compared to last year.

Hungary (40th) were the most improved side in the rankings this year, having gained 44 points and 12 places to break into the top 50.

Marco Rossi’s side lost just once in eight matches to qualify for the Euro 2020 finals, which has been postponed until June-July next year due to COVID-19.

Mobile phone imports jump 90pc

Mobile phone imports jump 90pc
The legal mobile phone imports increased by more than 90 per cent since the implementation of Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (Dirbs) in 2018.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced that the import of mobile devices via legal channels increased to 28.02 million sets in 2019 from 17.2m in 2018, while thus far in the ongoing calendar year 2020 more than 32.8m devices have been imported.

The PTA said that 175,000 devices have been blocked based on their IMEI number that were reported stolen through Dirbs, adding that the system has also identified and blocked 24.3m fake or replica mobile devices and 657,645 IMEIs which were cloned or duplicated, since the Dirbs system began.

The PTA has also said that successful execution of the system has led to establishment of 29 local smartphone assembly firms while smuggling and inflow of cheap sets have been contained.

These facilities have produced over 20m devices since 2019 with over 1.5m 4G smart phones, the PTA claimed, going on to say that “the implementation of Dirbs has been a catalyst for local mobile devices manufacturing” and that it can lead to unlocking the potential for making Pakistan a hub for mobile handset exports.

Meanwhile, since the implementation of Dirbs, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has also collected a total of Rs90 billion in custom duties during the period between Jan 2019 to Nov 2020, the PTA said.

Moreover, the FBR has collected Rs9bn under the individual category.

In June of this year the government announced a Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy (MDMP) to provide incentives to local assemblers. Some assemblers currently operating under this policy, or those about to make entry, have voiced concerns on lingering issues that remain unimplemented under the policy.

Pakistan has 169 million cellular subscribers, according to PTA data, of whom 85mn are 3G/4G subscribers. 3mn are basic telephony subscribers and 85mn more are broadband subscribers. The data is as of August 2020.

Speaking to Dawn on background, they said the localisation requirement in the policy is not possible to implement in Pakistan since screens, motherboards and batteries are not going to be possible to manufacture here.

The policy also assured “removal of Fixed Sales Tax on CKD/SKD manufacturing of mobile devices” as well as exemption from 4 per cent withholding tax on domestic sales of locally assembled devices, but industry players say implementation of these steps has still not been completed.

Trump threatens to veto move against UAE arms sales

US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump issued a formal threat on Wednesday to veto congressional efforts to block his plans for $23 billion in military sales to the United Arab Emirates.

The Senate is due to vote on resolutions of disapproval of the sales this week.

In its policy statement, the White House said the sales directly support US foreign policy and national security objectives by “enabling the UAE to deter increasing Iranian aggressive behaviour and threats” in the wake of its recent peace deal with Israel.

The veto threat was expected. The administration told Congress on Nov 10 that it had approved the vast sale to the UAE of products from General Atomics, Lockheed Martin Corp and Raytheon Technologies Corp. The deal includes up to 50 F-35s, the world’s most advanced fighter jet; more than 14,000 bombs and munitions; and the second-largest sale of US drones to a single country.

US law requires congressional review of major arms deals, and lets senators force votes on resolutions of disapproval. But to become effective, the resolutions must pass the Republican-led Senate and Democratic-led House of Representatives, and garner two-thirds majorities in both chambers to survive Trump’s veto.

Critics said the Trump administration, seeking to rush the sales as it brokered a peace deal between the UAE and Israel, provided too little information, including about safeguards to ensure the weapons not end up in the wrong hands.

Some lawmakers are also worried that they might violate the US guarantee that Israel will retain a military advantage over other countries in the region. But Israel, which enjoys strong support in Congress, has said it does not object to the sales.

Past measures to block Trump’s arms deals have passed the House and Senate, but failed to garner enough support to override his vetoes.
