National Minority Day is being observed today

President says the Constitution guarantees equal rights to minorities
National Minority Day is being observed today ( Sunday) to honour the services and sacrifices, rendered by religious minorities for the country over the years.

President Dr Arif Alvi has said that the Constitution of Pakistan fully guaranteed equal rights to the minorities as they were the important pillar of the society.

The president, in a message on the National Minorities’ Day , said a country could not aspire to achieve progress unless its nation had a unity in its ranks. It was the objective behind observance of the day on August 11 every year.

He urged upon the nation to reiterate its resolve for promotion of brotherhood and tolerance in the society without being hostage to any kind of prejudice, a press release said.

The president said the purpose of observing the day was to highlight the message of Father of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who had pronounced equal rights to all citizens of Pakistan.

This very day also recognizes the contribution and sacrifices of minorities in creation of Pakistan and nation-building. On this occasion, events, seminars and social gatherings are arranged across the country by members of various religious minorities and the ministry of National Harmony.

The Government of Pakistan declared 11 August as National Minority Day in 2009. It has always been the endeavour of the Government to safeguard fundamental rights, safety, security, honour, life, liberty and prosperity of minorities in line with the historic speech of founder of the nation Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah at the Constituent Assembly on August 11, 1947.

Nonetheless, the National Minorities Day not only expresses gratitude for the contributions, made by these religious communities, but also professes that future development of Pakistan hinges crucially on their efforts.

Norway mosque shooting: Police take into custody suspect in firing on mosque

A gunman armed with multiple weapons opened fire in a mosque near Oslo, Norway
A gunman armed with multiple weapons opened fire in a mosque near Oslo on Saturday, injuring one person before being overpowered by an elderly worshipper and arrested, Norwegian police and witnesses said.

Hours after the attack, the body of a young woman related to the suspect was found in a home in the suburb of Baerum where the shooting took place earlier in the day, police said Saturday evening.

Investigators are treating her death as suspicious and have opened a murder probe.

The head of the mosque described the assailant as a young white man dressed in black and said he was wearing a helmet and bulletproof vest.

He said only three people had been inside the al-Noor Islamic centre at the time of the attack.

Police was alerted to the shooting shortly after 4 pm (1400 GMT).

Officers first reported that a victim had been shot, but later clarified one person had sustained "minor injuries" and that it was unclear if they were gunshot wounds.

Police said the suspect appeared to have acted on his own.

"It is a Norwegian young man, with a Norwegian background. He lives in the vicinity," Oslo police spokesman Rune Skjold had told a press conference earlier Saturday.

Skjold added that the suspect had been known to police before the incident but could not be described as someone with a "criminal background".

Norway was the scene of one of the worst-ever attacks by a right-wing extremist in July 2011, when 77 people were killed by Anders Behring Breivik.

"One of our members has been shot by a white man with a helmet and uniform," Irfan Mushtaq, head of the mosque, told local media.

Mushtaq said that the man had carried multiple weapons, but that he had been subdued by a member of the mosque.

Mushtaq himself had arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted about the gunman and had gone to the back of the building while waiting for police to arrive.

"Then I see that there are cartridges scattered and blood on the carpets, and I see one of our members is sitting on the perpetrator, covered in blood," Mushtaq told Norwegian newspaper VG.

He said the man who apparently overpowered the shooter was 75 years old and had been reading the Koran after a prayer session.

According to Mushtaq, the mosque had not received any threats ahead of the shooting.

The attack took place on the eve of the Muslim celebration of Eid Al-Adha, marking the end of the Muslim pilgrimage Hajj.

Police said Saturday they would be sending out more officers so that those celebrating would "be as safe as possible".

US must do more to help defuse situation in Kashmir : Asad Majeed

Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States Dr Asad Majeed Khan
Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States Dr Asad Majeed Khan called on the Trump administration to help ease tensions after India revoked autonomy of Kashmir.

In an interview, Khan said the US and only the US could do and must do more to help defuse the situation in Kashmir, and to inject some sanity on the Indian side.

“Kashmir even according to India’s own constitution has enjoyed a special status. What India has done is to unilaterally change the status of the territory which is recognised by the entire international community including the United Nations as a disputed territory and we as a party to that dispute have a serious issue with what India has done,” the envoy said.

He continued, “The consequences of India’s action has led to a lock-down in the region and India actually has its troops present in the valley, turning the whole valley into the largest prison in the world with about 12 million people watched by troops and we are concerned about it.”

Responding to a question about Pakistan’s response on the situation, the ambassador said, “The world saw our restraint even during the Pulwama crisis where India violated our sovereignty and sent aircraft to bomb our side of the territory, even in the face of that kind of aggression our response was very measured.”

“Our response was dictated by restraint. Our prime minister was here on a visit to the US and consistently spoke about Pakistan’s desire for peace. I think we remain committed to that but essentially I think what is really important is that this escalation we are seeing on India’s side needs to be de-escalated for the two countries to engage in dialogue.”

Referring to US President Donald Trump’s offer of mediation over the Kashmir issue, Khan said: “We welcome the president’s offer to do so. India did not accept the offer. I think the US continued engagement has an important role to play in not just adding — trying to help two countries have a dialogue to resolve the issue but also to urge India to undo things they have done over the last week in unleashing pressure, arresting people across the board, in turning the valley into a huge prison.”

Will bear PM's injustice but wont bow down before him: Shehbaz

Shehbaz sharif
Opposition Leader in National Assembly (NA) Shehbaz Sharif on Friday has claimed that steps like arrest of Maryam Nawaz are being taken to divert the attention of the people from government’s failed policies on occupied Kashmir matter.

Speaking in the House, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president said that Nawaz Sharif was only accused of serving the nation by saving billions of rupees from mega projects while Maryam was detained for coming out of her house for her father and the people of Pakistan.

Will continue to bear Prime Minister Imran Khan’s injustice but wont bow down before him, he clarified.

He regretted that Maryam was arrested in front of her father and children. He further accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government of being in “an alliance” with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The leader said that Rs70 billion was spent on accountability bureau in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) but the government closed it. The masses could have prayed for the success of incumbent government if it provided them relief by decreasing the inflation, he went on to say.

Reacting to Shehbaz Sharif’s speech, PTI leader and Minister for Federal Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood advised PML-N leaders to better prove their innocence in corruption cases.

He said that the PML-N representatives should defend themselves in court regarding their looted money. They (PML-N members) are using Parliament to conceal their wrongdoings, he continued.

Shafqat Mehmood said that Sharif family was involved in money laundering and bought four of its flats in London with embezzled money.

He claimed that shares of Maryam Nawaz in a sugar mill were brought with telegraphic transfers.

Indian move of annexation of occupied Kashmir historic blunder: PM Imran

Indian move of annexation of occupied Kashmir historic blunder: PM Imran
Prime Minister Imran Khan has termed the Indian move of annexation of occupied Kashmir a historic blunder and said it would give a new impetus to the indigenous freedom struggle.

Talking to senior journalists at the PM Office in Islamabad, he said the India's move to end special status of occupied Kashmir is not interest-driven, but is based on an ideology of Hindu racism and Hindu supremacy.

Imran Khan said India’s measures towards ethnic cleansing reminded one of Hitler’s Nazism.

He said the ongoing indigenous movement in the occupied Kashmir is the result of years of oppression and failure of the Indian government to win the hearts and minds of Kashmiris.

He said Pakistan anticipated that after lifting of curfew, situation in the occupied Kashmir could rapidly deteriorate and there might be a false flag operation, to blame Pakistan.

Imran Khan asked the international community to play its role in addressing the situation and help avert the genocide of the Kashmiris.

He said even the saner elements in India are voicing their concerns and describing the attempt of annexation of occupied Kashmir as a historical mistake.

The prime minister said the issue could not be resolved through war as war between the two nuclear states would be disastrous. Once a war started, it would be beyond anyone's control.

He said an attempt to change the demographics of the Indian occupied Kashmir is a violation of the Article 49 of the Geneva Convention.

Kashmir Issue: Pakistan puts India on backfoot by aggressive diplomacy at UN

Pakistani Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi
Pakistani Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi underscored the imperative need for ensuring that the crisis triggered by India’s ‘unlawful annexation’ of Jammu and Kashmir was addressed in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions on Kashmir.

The envoy said this during her meeting with the UN’s political affairs chief on Thursday amid intense diplomatic activity, according to informed sources.

Her meeting with Rosemary DiCarlo, Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs, was part of a series of contacts she has been making to brief senior UN officials and diplomats from all regions of the world about Pakistan’s stand on the Indian government decision to strip occupied Kashmir of its special status and placing the disputed state under a lockdown.

A statement issued later on behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres acknowledged the critical importance of UN resolutions on Kashmir to deal with the crisis.

Ambassador Lodhi also met three non-permanent members of the UN Security Council — Kuwait, Indonesia and South Africa — as India, obviously on back foot, also stepped up its campaign to have the world believe that the decision was taken for the socio-economic development of the Kashmiris and that they enjoy the same rights as the Indians.

Briefing Under-Secretary-General DiCarlo, the Pakistani envoy focused on the illegality of Indian action, and called on the United Nations, especially the Secretary-General, to clearly enunciate its position on the subject, according to the sources.

She also informed Ms. DiCarlo about the complete lockdown in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, including shut down of internet services and land-lines that had begun even before the announcement about the controversial decision on Kashmir.

Lodhi also briefed her about continued Indian ceasefire violations across the Line of Control, the most egregious of which was the use of cluster munitions a day before announcing the abrogation of the Indian Constitution’s Article 370, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Ms. DiCarlo noted Pakistan’s concerns and once again expressed the Secretary-General’s willingness to use his good offices — something that India continues to reject.

More than two million Muslims begin Hajj pilgrimage

More than two million Muslims began the annual Hajj on Friday
More than two million Muslims began the annual Hajj on Friday.

According to official statistics issued by Saudi General Directorate of Passports, 1.604 million pilgrims arrived in Saudi Arabia for Hajj, an increase of eight per cent or 117,000 pilgrims compared to the same period in 2018.

In Makkah and other holy sites, the Saline Water Conversion Corporation, SWCC, aims to achieve a new record in 2019, by supplying one million cubic metres of potable water per day during the Hajj season, an increase of 10 per cent compared to 2018.

In Mina, an area of eight-square kilometres has been allocated to some 45,000 tents, to provide accommodation for 1.5 million pilgrims.

The area can host 118,000 people per hour and accommodate 70,000 worshipers.

Some 141,800 pilgrims who arrived on 355 flights also benefited from the Makkah Route initiative — a service launched by the Kingdom that includes issuing visas, ensuring compliance with health requirements, and codifying and sorting luggage at airports in the pilgrims’ own countries.

"All of the arms of state have been deployed (and) we are proud to serve as 'God's hosts'," said security forces spokesman Bassam Attia.

In total some 2.5 million faithful, the majority from abroad, will undertake the pilgrimage this year, according to local media.

"More than 1.8 million visas were delivered online without the need for middlemen. It's a success," said Hajj ministry official Hatim bin Hassan Qadi.

"We feel cleansed by achieving this pillar of Islam and meeting people from across the world. It's marvellous," said Mohamed Jaafar, a 40-year-old Egyptian pilgrim.

'An indescribable feeling'

"It's an indescribable feeling. You have to live it to understand it," said an Algerian in his fifties completing the pilgrimage for the first time.

"It's a golden opportunity and moment," said his female companion.

Mecca, built in a desert valley, is home to the Kaaba, a cube structure that is the focal point of Islam and draped in a gold-embroidered black cloth.

Muslims around the world pray towards the Kaaba, which is located in the Grand Mosque, and pilgrims walk around it seven times.

Worshippers will participate in weekly prayers late on Friday morning.

During the pilgrimage, separate streams of men and women, grouped by nationality, will travel to Mina on foot or in buses provided by the authorities.

A district of Mecca, Mina sits in a narrow valley surrounded by rocky mountains and is transformed each year into a vast encampment for pilgrims.

A total of "350,000 air-conditioned tents have been pitched," said a Saudi official.

Worshippers will climb Mount Arafat, also known as the "Mount of Mercy", for hours of prayers and Koran recitals.

After descending, they will gather pebbles and perform the symbolic "stoning of the devil".

That marks the beginning of Eid-ul-Azha, the festival of sacrifice, marked on Sunday.

Pilgrims then return to the Grand Mosque to perform a final "tawaf" or walk around the Kaaba.

The scale of the pilgrimage presents vast security and logistical challenges, with tens of thousands of safety officers deployed.

The Hajj, one of the world's largest religious gatherings, is one of Islam's five pillars and must be undertaken by all Muslims with the means at least once in their lives.

Pakistan response to any Indian misadventure to be stronger than Feb 27: DG ISPR

Director General Inter-Services Public Relations Major General Asif Ghafoor
Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor on Friday said Pakistan’s response shall be even stronger than that of February 27, should there be an attempt by Indian Army to undertake any misadventure.

The military’s media spokesperson in a post on Twitter said, "Should there be an attempt by Indian Army to undertake any misadventure, Pakistan’s response shall be even stronger than that of February 27 2019."

He added, "Thousands of Indian troops have failed to suppress just struggle of brave Kashmiris for decades. Current surge won’t succeed either."

In response to a spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of Defence accusing Pakistan of openly threatening about certain incidents in a video briefing, DG ISPR rejected the allegations as "usual blatant lies."

“Usual blatant lies. An attempt to carve out causes belli for a misadventure to divert world attention from precarious situation & atrocities in IOJ&K. While IOJ&K faces media blackout, AJ&K is open to foreign media & UNMOGIP to visit place of their own choosing. Can you do same?”, he tweeted.

A day earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan said Pakistan does not want war, however, if India imposes, then it will give a befitting response.

In a meeting with senior journalists, the prime minister said Pakistan will take the issue of Indian violence against Kashmiris to the United Nations.

He further said, the international community will be apprised of the Indian tactics, such as ethnic cleansing and plans to change the demography of occupied Kashmir.

The Indian government on Monday rushed through a presidential decree to abolish Article 370 of the Constitution which grants special status to Indian occupied Kashmir, as tensions mounted in the disputed valley with unprecedented numbers of Indian troops deployed in the region.

Talking to media, prior leaving to Beijing, Shah Mehmood Qureshi had said he is leaving for China to hold consultations with the Chinese leadership on developments arising out of India’s move to revoke special status of occupied Kashmir.

Speaking to media, he said the government conveyed its concerns over the Indian decision to various countries across the globe and invited the Diplomatic Corps to the Foreign Office to keep them abreast of the situation in the region as well.

FM Qureshi had expressed the fear that India can stage a Pulwama-like incident to divert world attention from the situation in Kashmir.

He said India has deployed an unprecedented number of 900,000 troops in the occupied territory.

It must be noted that on August 5, India’s BJP government moved a bill in the upper house of the parliament (Rajaya Sabha) to remove Article 370 from the Indian constitution amid opposition members’ protest.

It was later signed by Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, stripping the state of Kashmir off its special status and turning it a Union Territory with the legislature.

Indian govt's revocation of special status violates rights of Kashmiris: Sam Zarifi

Switzerland-based human rights organization, International Commission of Justice, says the Indian government's revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir violates the rights of representation and participation guaranteed to the people of Jammu and Kashmir under the Indian Constitution and in international law.

The Foreign Minister came back from Jeddah today morning where he had gone earlier to perform his pre-scheduled Hajj.

The Minister is scheduled to appear in the joint parliamentary session today amidst the rapidly changing regional scenario.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Tuesday (yesterday) that India’s act of abolishing special status for held Kashmir is a blatant violation of international laws and tantamount to playing havoc with regional peace.

Lodhi briefs UNSC President over Indian actions in IoK

Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations, Dr Maleeha Lodhi and Security Council president
Pakistan's Ambassador to the United Nations, Dr Maleeha Lodhi spent a busy day on Tuesday briefing the Security Council president, diplomats and UN officials on the grave situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir following India's move to abolish Article 370 of its constitution.

The Pakistani envoy went through a tightly laid-out schedule to apprise as many of her counterparts as possible of the breach by India of UN Security Council resolutions on Kashmir, with the revocation of the territory's special status that has spawned a regional crisis.

Lodhi met President of the UN Security Council Joanna Wronecka where she emphasised that the Indian action was "an egregious assault on the dignity of the Kashmiris."

She called on the Security Council to demand that India halt and reverse its unlawful and destabilising actions; ensure full compliance with UN Security Council resolutions; and refrain from any steps that interfere with the settlement of the decades-old Kashmir dispute.

"The tragedy of Kashmir has thus come full circle," the Pakistani envoy told UNSC President, sources said.

In 1947, she pointed out, India occupied Jammu and Kashmir on fallacious grounds.

"The real Indian intention to institute these changes is to alter the demographic structure of the Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir," Ambassador Lodhi told UNSC President Wronecka.

Since these actions could materially breach the plebiscite arrangements under the UN auspices, she said, they constitute a flagrant violation of Security Council resolutions, particularly with regard to realisation of the right to self-determination of the Kashmiris.

These Indian machinations notwithstanding, the Pakistani ambassador explained that relevant Council resolutions provide that "the final disposition of the State of Jammu and Kashmir will be made in accordance with the will of the people expressed through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite conducted under the auspices of the United Nations".

The unilateral Indian action cannot revoke this legal ‘fact’ and is therefore, ultra vires and void, Ambassador Lodhi said.

Pakistan, she said, resolutely condemns this sly Indian attempt to perpetuate its illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir, adding, "The valiant Kashmiri struggle for self-determination cannot be crushed through a parliamentary act."

Kashmiris across the spectrum, the Pakistani envoy told President Wronecka, have unequivocally rejected the Indian move.

Moderate voices within India have also berated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government for mortgaging Kashmir to its narrow political interests, she pointed out.

"Tellingly, India is fully aware of the illegality of its actions," she said, pointing out that the legislative ‘farce’ in the Indian Parliament was thus, preceded by additional deployment of 38,000 soldiers to the occupied territory, forced exodus of all outsiders, imposition of curfew, detention of the legitimate Kashmiri leadership, and suspension of communication services.

"These are not actions of a state with legitimate claims over a territory but are acts of a usurper who seeks to occupy a territory and subdue its people, under duress and subjugation," Ambassador Lodhi said.

In 2018, she said, Indian forces committed more than 2,350 ceasefire violations resulting in the martyrdom of 36 civilians while countless others sustained injuries, noting that this dangerous trend continues unabated during the current year.

"As the preeminent body tasked with the maintenance of international peace and security, the Security Council should take immediate cognisance of the situation," Ambassador Lodhi emphasised. "After all, at stake are not only the imperative for regional peace, but also the credibility and standing of the Council to uphold its own legally binding resolutions."

According to sources, the UNSC president listened to the Pakistani envoy and said she was closely following the developments in Kashmir.

"We have to stand firm for Kashmir. I believe [India Prime Minister] Narendra Modi has gone to the last extent in its tyranny in Kashmir and to coax some reaction out of Pakistan.

"We have to decide that this is not just about Kashmir but about Pakistan's independence," Shehbaz noted. "The water is already above our heads."

The Opposition leader further mentioned that the Indian PM had targeted Pakistan's jugular vein, which is why, "before he gets a chance to cut it, we need to cut his hands".

"Neither is there a Palestine nor won’t let an Israel form in the region," he underlined. "The BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] has not come into power for the first time in India."

Shehbaz underscored that a country's leadership helps its nation come out of storms and, in that context, the leadership needed "to stand up and stand strong now to tell the world that we're one and we will fight back to the fullest extent.

"I agree with the prime minister that we should send out one message to the world."

It is the voice of 220 million Pakistanis that they stand by the Kashmiri people's side.

'Kashmir issue has a direct link to Pakistan'
Noting that the session was called on an emerging issue that had a direct link to the country's foundation, the PML-N president said: “Pakistan is of Kashmiris and Kashmiris are of Pakistan."

Shehbaz said the Pakistani government had not presented its policy and strategy to counter the assault by Modi even after the passage of 24 hours.

He said: "There is every chance of genocide going on there [in Occupied Kashmir]. What are we planning on doing?"

He added that the Modi government had not only snatched the Kashmiris' rights but also challenged Pakistan's honour and slapped the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in its face.

Speaking on PM Khan's meeting with US President Donald Trump, Shehbaz said India twice negated the American leader's offer to mediate on the Kashmir issue. "Modi was quietly preparing for what happened in Kashmir," he said.

Shehbaz said it was Modi who was the hurdle in establishing peace in Afghanistan. "Was this President Trump's trump card of trap card?" Shehbaz asked.

“We accepted Trump's offer [to mediate]. Was our government not prepared for Modi’s intentions? Our government had no clue and were happy about Trump’s offer.”

"They couldn't sleep because of the excitement" from Trump's offer, he added.

The PML-N leader also asked as to why Pakistan's ally nations — including China, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) — had not made any comments on the escalating Kashmir tension and termed it as isolation.

“I think we should tap the UNSC, OIC [Organisation of Islamic Cooperation], and our bilateral relations to give a firm response to Modi.

"If we take a firm stand against Modi and make preparations to counter his move, we will be fully supported.”

The Opposition leader concluded his address saying the nation, together, should vow to foil Modi's actions and continue fighting for Kashmiris' independence.
