China's space lab Tiangong 2 destroyed in controlled fall to earth

China's space lab Tiangong 2 destroyed in controlled fall to earth
China's Tiangong-2 space lab successfully re-entered the Earth's atmosphere on Friday under controlled conditions, completing the latest round of experiments in Beijing's ambitious space programme.

Tiangong-2 — or “Heavenly Palace” — was launched into orbit in 2016 and re-entered the earth's atmosphere under control at around 9.06pm local time on Friday, China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said.

A small amount of the spacecraft's debris fell into a “predetermined safe sea area in the South Pacific”, according to the agency.

Xinhua said the space lab has worked in orbit for over 1,000 days, much longer than its 2-year designed lifespan.

Zhou Jianping, chief designer of China's manned space programme, told Xinhua that the controlled re-entry marked the successful completion of all the tasks in the space lab phase of the programme.

Efforts are now being made to step up preparations for constructing China's space station, Xinhua said, citing CMSA.

The controlled return represents a success in China's military-run space programme, which has encountered some glitches on its way.

A space lab dubbed Tiangong-1 disintegrated as it plunged back to Earth in April 2018, two years after it ceased functioning.

Tiangong-1 was placed in orbit in September 2011 to serve as a testing ground for China's efforts to build its own space station by 2022, but ceased functioning in 2016.

Chinese authorities denied that the lab was out of control.

The International Space Station — a collaboration between the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan — has been in operation since 1998 but is due to be retired in 2024.

Beijing will then have the only space station in orbit, though it will be much smaller than the ISS which weighs 400 tonnes and is as large as a football pitch.

China in 2003 also became the third country able to launch humans into space, following the former Soviet Union and the US. Beijing sees its space programme as symbolising the country's progress and a marker of its rising global stature.

Cheekh is basically saying that women who seek justice will always suffer

Saba Qamar
26 episodes in, the only message Zanjabeel Asim’s Cheekh has managed to give us is that if you are a woman in Pakistan, you cannot fight for your or anyone else’s rights; that justice doesn’t exist – and if you happen to somehow get it, you lose everything and everyone in the process.

So basically, if you are a woman, sit down and be quiet.

In the last four episodes, Mannat (Saba Qamar) has not only lost her unborn baby, but her mother and husband too. Wajih’s (Bilal Abbas Khan) lawyer gets his cronies to threaten Mannat’s mother (Gul-e-Rana) so much that she goes to court and testifies that Mannat is actualy crazy, causing the judge to send Mannat to a mental hospital.

She can’t take the guilt of doing that and dies. In the hospital, the doctor is paid off by the lawyer to keep Mannat drugged and told to increase dosage daily. When Shayaan (Emmad Irfani) finds out, he goes to Yawar (Aijaz Aslam), who has no idea what is happening anymore and Wajih has taken over.

Wajih goes to talk to Shayan, the brothers end up fighting and Wajih pushes Shayan, causing his death.

I don’t understand what is going on. There are so many questions and so many holes in this script that it’s hard to believe that not only the actors but the director too agreed to do this drama.

All the doctors in Pakistan seem to have forgotten the vows they took and have no issues forging reports or overdosing a patient due to greed and/or friendship.

The lawyer that Mannat has is so incompetent that he called zero family members to the stand. Why didn’t he call Haya (Azekah Daniel) or Shahwar (Maira Khan) to court and get their statements? They all lived with Mannat and Wajih when the murder took place.

In fact, Shahwar even heard Wajih threaten Mannat and she herself was threatened by him so why didn’t she go to the police after Yawar divorced her?

She showed up at Mannat’s mother’s funeral for support, so wouldn’t it make sense for her to tell at least Shayan what happened? Even Haya has known for a while that Wajih has been lying and through Shariq, she heard Wajih confess so why didn’t she go to Shayaan right after?

PM Imran says promised Allah he won't let go of those who robbed country

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan said Friday he had "promised Allah that he would not let go of those who robbed the country", and, therefore, accountability would continue regardless of what the Opposition did.

Addressing a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for a hospital here in the city's Namal Valley, Khan noted that a modern hospital would help the people of Mianwali. The government would upgrade the Mianwali Hospital as well, he added.

"The world remembers a person who does something for its people," the premier said.

Among those in attendance were his friend and British-Pakistani businessperson, Aneel Musarrat, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, Advisor on Commerce, Textiles, Industries, and Investment, Abdul Razak Dawood, and a large number of overseas Pakistanis.

On corruption, Khan warned those who claimed that they would not answer that "we will extract answers from them". Those who threaten, raise a hue and cry, and stage drama, they were the same people who tried to use influence from abroad as well, the premier said.

The premier added that he had submitted some 60 documents to the Supreme Court of Pakistan whereas those who raised a hue and cry "only submitted Qatari letters and Calibri font documents".

The PM further underscored that none of the cases against the Opposition leader was filed by the incumbent government but that it just let the institutions operate independently and gave them full authority to proceed without any pressure.

Terming corruption as the biggest impediment in the country's progress, Khan said the looters of public money would be held accountable at every cost. He mentioned: "This time, the powerful will come under the claw of accountability … [those] who had inflicted immense damage to the country during their tenures.

"I have been waiting for this moment for 22 years [of my political struggle] to bring to book those who plundered public money," he said, noting that national culprits were dubbing accountability as "political revenge and a threat to democracy.

"In fact, they want to hide their corruption but people are well aware of these political gimmicks," he said.

He wished to restore the confidence of international investors in Pakistan by ending corruption, Khan said, adding that several overseas Pakistani entrepreneurs had told him that they were willing to invest in the country but were hesitant over the menace of corruption.

The premier expressed confidence that Pakistan would achieve the status of a strong and prosperous country as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government had started taking tough measures in the best national interest.

"It's my promise to the nation that I will get this country on the trajectory of development," he said.

Khan also invited the private sector to step forward in adopting the country's major hospitals and join the government's journey of bringing improvement in the health sector.

"Under the adopt-a-hospital project, we can bring a significant change in the health sector through a public-private partnership," he said, adding that the government alone could not revamp all medical facilities across Pakistan but the private sector's financial assistance could yield positive results.

He said several other groups had also approached him to adopt a hospital, which was an encouraging sign.

Separately, speaking of his friend and British-Pakistani businessperson, Aneel Musarrat, Khan said his Urdu was much better than that of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the chairperson of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP)/

Musarrat had earlier said his own Urdu was not good enough, to which the aforementioned was Khan's response.

The premier also lauded Musarrat, who was in attendance and would be financing the hospital to cater to the health needs of thousands of patients.

US may have shot down own drone in Persian Gulf, Iran says of Trump’s claim

Iranian drone
Iran has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that a US warship had shot down an Iranian Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) in the Strait of Hormuz.

“We have not lost any drone in the Strait of Hormuz nor anywhere else,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi said in a tweet on Friday.

“I am worried that USS Boxer has shot down their own UAS by mistake!”

Later on Friday, a spokesman for the Iranian Armed Forces also rejected the US president’s claim, saying the claim is aimed at creating tension and disrupting security in the strategic waterway.

"Unlike Trump’s delusional and groundless claim, all drones belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, including the one mentioned by the US president, have returned to their bases safe and sound after carrying out their scheduled surveillance and control operations,” Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi said.

“The Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran always feel duty-bound to protect, control, and safeguard the security of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz with full vigilance while observing international regulations,” he added.

The comments came after President Trump claimed that the USS Boxer had fired on an Iranian drone on Thursday, shooting it down in the Strait of Hormuz. The US president claimed that Iran’s drone “was immediately destroyed.”

It came almost a month after the IRGC shot down an intruding American spy drone in the country’s southern coastal province of Hormozgan.

On Thursday, Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said it had seized a foreign ship that was smuggling fuel in the Persian Gulf near the Strait of Hormuz.

At least 12 killed in Taliban attack on Afghan police headquarter

At least 12 killed in Taliban attack on Afghan police headquarter
At least 12 people were killed and scores others wounded on Thursday when the Taliban attacked a police headquarters in the southern city of Kandahar, officials and the militants said.

The assault comes amid a series of peace talks between Washington and the Taliban that both sides say are making progress, but which so far have yielded no reduction in violence in the gruelling Afghan conflict.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said the afternoon attack in Afghanistan's second-largest city started with a car bomb, then saw gunmen storm the police compound.

“A number of mujahideen equipped with heavy and small arms breached the headquarters and launched their operations inside,” he said.

Baheer Ahmadi, the Kandahar governor's spokesman, told AFP that 12 people had been killed, including nine civilians and three police officers. Another 89 were wounded, he added.

Police chief Tadin Khan said the car bomb was followed by two other explosions. “The fighting is over now. Some vehicles were burnt. Now the Afghan army and US helicopters are hovering in the area,” he told AFP.

Hayatullah Hayat, the provincial governor for Kandahar, said Afghan security forces had launched a “clean-up operation” to see if any attackers were remaining.

Pictures on social media showed a huge plume of smoke rising over Kandahar, and Hayat said about six trucks carrying commercial goods had burnt.

The assault comes just one day after two Afghan soldiers — who were really Taliban operatives — fatally shot an Afghan colonel in Ghazni province.

Trump intensifies attacks on four Democratic congresswomen

United States President Donald Trump
United States President Donald Trump stepped up his vilification of four liberal lawmakers as un-American at a raucous rally on Wednesday, underscoring that the attacks will form a key part of his strategy for winning re-election in 2020.

Despite criticism from Democrats that his comments about the four minority congresswomen are racist, Trump went on an extended diatribe about the lawmakers, saying they were welcome to leave the country if they did not like his policies on issues such as immigration and defending Israel.

“So these Congresswomen, their comments are helping to fuel the rise of a dangerous, militant hard left,” the Republican president said to roars from the crowd in North Carolina, a state seen as key to his re-election.

Trump tweeted over the weekend that the four progressive representatives, known as “the squad” — Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts — should “go back” where they came from, even though all are US citizens and three are US-born.

The aim, one source close to Trump said, was to make Democrats look as far left as possible to moderate voters as he girds for a tough re-election battle in November 2020.

“He is trying to make them the face of the Democratic Party as we move closer into the 2020 cycle and he's trying to highlight them as a fringe crowd as much as possible so it turns off your middle-of-the-road voters,” the source said.

As Trump recounted past comments by Omar, who was born in Somalia and emigrated to the US as a child, the crowd began chanting: “Send her back!”

"Tonight I have a suggestion for the hate-filled extremists who are constantly trying to tear our country down. They never have anything good to say. That's why I say: 'Hey, if they don't like it, let them leave. Let them leave'," Trump said.

Trump spent about a fifth of his freewheeling 90-minute-long speech criticising the four lawmakers, to enthusiastic crowd response.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the front-runner for the Democratic 2020 presidential nomination, weighed in against Trump's remarks via Twitter.

“These members of Congress children of immigrants, just like so many of us are an example of exactly what makes America great,” Biden said on the social network.

Trump also derided Biden in his remarks and skewered other Democrats vying to be the party's 2020 candidate.

He repeated his frequent reference to US Senator Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas,” a dig about a controversy over her heritage that Warren and Native American groups have complained is racist.

Winning tactic?

Trump's Twitter attacks initially caused some heartburn for advisers who felt he had gone too far.

But two said Trump had since offered a contrasting view, that the political views of the four lawmakers were socialist, out of the mainstream and hateful to their home country, versus those of the president and his flag-waving rhetoric.

“If the American people have to choose between the squad and the president, then that's an easy decision,” one adviser said.

Trump, who during his 2016 campaign voiced harsh assessments of the state of the country, tweeted a video ahead of the rally that featured patriotic scenes of the president meeting Americans, with frequent images of the American flag. It ended with the slogan: “America — One Squad Under God.”

“Democrats are now the party of high taxes, high crime, open borders, late-term abortion, intolerance and division. The Republican Party is the party for all Americans and American values,” he said in North Carolina.

The tactic follows a well-worn path for Trump, who called for a ban on Muslims entering the US during his 2016 campaign. His proposal drew widespread criticism, but Republicans overwhelmingly supported it, and it was a factor in his victory.

Over the weekend, Trump inserted himself into what had been an internecine Democratic Party fight pitting Omar, Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib and Pressley against House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

He first defended Pelosi, then attacked the four. That prompted Pelosi to defend her flock, prompting Trump and other Republicans to argue the Democratic Party had shifted to the left.

The Democratic-controlled House voted on Tuesday largely along party lines to formally condemn Trump's remarks as “racist". Trump's attacks had a spur-of-the-moment quality around which the Republican Party later built a strategy.

The tactic had worked, said Barry Bennett, who advised Trump's 2016 campaign. “The Democratic Party last week was trying to distance itself from the squad, and this week they're hugging them, and that is a massive win for Trump.”

But not all Republicans were comfortable.

“I'm disappointed in the tweets,” said Steve Duprey, a member of the Republican National Committee from New Hampshire.

“I know the president is subject to lots of attacks, but he should always try to turn the other cheek and take the high road,” Duprey said.

At least 33 killed in 'appalling' arson attack on Japanese animation studio

At least 33 killed in 'appalling' arson attack on Japanese animation studio
A man shouted “die” as he doused an animation studio with fuel and set it ablaze in Japan on Thursday, public broadcaster NHK said, killing at least 33 people in the nation’s worst mass murder in nearly two decades.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the attack in the city of Kyoto — the latest grisly killing in a nation widely known for its low crime rates — “too appalling for words” and offered condolences.

Police detained a 41-year-old man who shouted “die” as he poured what appeared to be petrol around the three-storey Kyoto Animation building shortly after 10AM (0100 GMT), public broadcaster NHK reported.

33 people were confirmed dead, an official for the Kyoto City Fire Department said.

Fire engulfed the building and white and black smoke billowed from its charred windows. It was Japan’s worst mass killing since a suspected arson attack on a Tokyo building in 2001.

A 47-year-old owner of a neighbourhood bar five minutes from the studio, Shiro Misaki, said he was driving nearby when he saw the thick smoke.

Officers “were stopping traffic and it was really hazy with smoke”, he said. “Even after I got back to my restaurant, I could smell the smoke.”

The prime minister said the cause was arson.

“Today, many people were killed and wounded in an arson murder case in Kyoto,” Abe said in a post on Twitter. “It is too appalling for words.”

Popular series

The dead were found on all three floors of the building, including in the studio, and on a staircase leading up to the roof, the fire department said. It was not clear if the roughly 10 people found dead on the staircase had been trying to escape.

Another 36 people were taken to hospital by midday, the fire department said, adding that 10 of them were seriously injured.

By Thursday, the fire department had completed its search of the studio, it said.

The suspected arsonist was injured and was being treated in hospital, so police could not question him, NHK said.

Kyoto police declined to comment.

The studio produces popular series such as the Sound! Euphonium. Its Free! Road to the World - The Dream movie is due for release this month.

“I am heartbroken,” Hideaki Hatta, the studio’s chief executive told reporters. “It is unbearable that the people who helped carry Japan’s animation industry were hurt and lost their lives in this way.”

There was an outpouring of support for the studio on Japanese-language social media, with some users posting pictures of animation. Many posted with the hashtag “#PrayForKyoani” — using an abbreviation for Kyoto Animation.

The studio has an outsized impact on Japan’s animation industry that outstrips the list of works it has produced, said Tokyo-based film commentator Yuichi Maeda.

“It has a huge presence in animation here. To have this many people die at once will be a huge blow to the Japanese animation industry,” he said.

Violent crime is relatively rare in Japan but occasional high-profile incidents have shocked the country.

Less than two months ago, a knife-wielding man slashed at a group of schoolgirls at a bus stop in Kawasaki, just south of Tokyo, killing one girl and the father of another, while injuring more than a dozen children.

In 2016, a man armed with a knife broke into a facility for the disabled in a small town near Tokyo and killed 19 patients.

Miftah Ismail not home, phone off as NAB raids residence: sources

Miftah Ismail
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Thursday carried out a raid at the residence of Miftah Ismail, the former minister of finance and a leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

Sources noted that the NAB officers were inside Ismail's residence but the ex-minister was not home. His mobile phone was off as well, they added.

However, the anti-graft watchdog's officers claimed that Ismail was in the house.

The anti-graft watchdog's Karachi team — and a large contingent of officers — was outside the PML-N leader's residence to arrest him shortly before entering and raiding.

Officers and police cars were stationed at the corner of every street near Ismail's residence, sources said, adding that some officers were also patrolling at locations near the house and its surroundings.

A NAB source said they were waiting for the higher authorities' next order.

A NAB officer outside the politician's house said the team was not being allowed to enter and that they were being told from inside the house to bring women officers.

Earlier in the day, the NAB chairperson had signed the arrest warrants of both Ismail and Sheikh Imran ul Haque, the managing director (MD) of Pakistan State Oil (PSO).

Sources in the anti-corruption body had confirmed that its Karachi chapter had been given the instructions to arrest Ismail. There was a possibility of Ismail being arrested in the next 24-48 hours, the sources had said early in the day as he, too, was being sought by the NAB.

Shehbaz questions accountability after Abbasi's arrest by NAB

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif
PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif — flanked by party leaders Ayaz Sadiq, Ahsan Iqbal and Marriyum Aurangzeb — on Thursday addressed a press conference following the arrest of former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Shehbaz, who himself is facing cases by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), condemned Abbasi's arrest by the bureau a few hours earlier.

"If there is accountability, where is it? This is the worst revenge against the PML-N in the garb of accountability," said Shehbaz.

"Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was arrested in a crude manner; when he asked for [arrest] warrants, the NAB officials just stared at each others' faces," claimed Sharif. "NAB DG came himself and showed a WhatsApp message. When Khaqan asked for a warrant signed by the NAB chairman, then they got a photocopy."

The former prime minister was arrested by a 12-member NAB team in a multi-billion-rupee case related to the award of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import contract. He was on his way to attend a press conference, accompanied by Iqbal and Aurangzeb, when he was arrested on the Thokar Niaz Baig interchange.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has ruined the country's economy in the past 10 months and the arrest was an attempt to distract the nation from the government's performance, the former chief minister alleged.

He said that Abbasi had a "central role" in ensuring that power generated from RLNG plants in Haveli Bahadur Shah, Bhikki and Balloki was supplied to Karachi.

"Apart from serving the nation, is supporting Nawaz Sharif the crime of Abbasi?"

Shehbaz added: "Opposition has to bear the brunt of this government's incapability. Most of the people who are in NAB jails are PML-N members."

"Imran Khan has lost his sleep over this, he has not been able to anything for the country and he wants to ruin everything."

The opposition leader lamented rupee devaluation that had led to an increase in prices of commodities accused the prime minister of "defaming the country all over the world".

"I want to tell the NAB chairman that this is not the first time PML-N is going through this. Everyone knows what happened to us during the Musharraf era," the PML-N president said. "We were forced into exile, Musharraf turned our house into an old people's house. But we are still alive, we will remain here and continue to serve the people."

Allegations of embezzling 'disgusting'

Shehbaz once again rejected claims made in a news report published in The Mail, that accused him of embezzling money from funds provided by Britain's Department for International Development (DFID) for 2005 earthquake victims.

"In 2005, when the earthquake hit Pakistan's northern areas, I was in exile in the UK," he said. "This is such a disgusting allegation that I stole money from a fund for earthquake victims and gave it to my children."

"If I was guilty of this charge, why did you have to arrest me in Ashiana or [Ramzan Sugar Mills] case? You could have arrested me in this one."

NAB arrests Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in LNG Case
The former Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has been taken under arrest by NAB.

Arrest warrants for the politicians arrest had been issued prior by Chairman NAB Justice retd. Javed Iqbal.

Abbasi was summoned today for an appearance in regard to the ongoing LNG corruption case against him.

Failure to appear resulted in the action which lead to his arrest.

NAB had summoned Abbasi for investigations on four different occasions but he kept ignoring the calls for appearance.

Abbasi in a previous appearance had failed to answer all the question asked by the bureau regarding the LNG scam, of which he is a prime suspect.

Abbasi has been arrested after being shown an arrest warrant, sources claimed.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) summoned former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) contract case on Thursday (today).

The former prime minister is facing charges of corruption and awarding a LNG import contract at exorbitant rates in 2015, which caused a big loss to the national exchequer. Sources said that he had granted a tender worth Rs220 bn to a firm in which he himself was a shareholder.

NAB sources said that Abbasi, in 2013, had awarded a LNG import and distribution contract to the Elengy Terminal in violation of the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules and relevant laws.

Abbasi is also accused of misusing his authority during his stint as petroleum minister. The case was registered on a complaint by Shahid Sattar an energy expert and former member of the Planning Commission and the SSGC board of directors on July 29, 2015.

Earlier on April 26, the names of former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, former finance minister Miftah Ismail and five others had been placed in exit control list in an inquiry into the LNG scandal.

US House votes to condemn Trump's racist comments

Donald Trump
The US House of Representatives formally condemned Donald Trump on Tuesday for xenophobic attacks on four minority Democratic lawmakers and hostile language targeting immigrants, as the president denied accusations of racism.

Top Republican leaders rallied around Trump, but four members of the president's party voted with the 235 Democrats to condemn him for "racist comments that have legitimised and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color".

One independent lawmaker also supported the measure, which takes aim at Trump's weekend tweets telling a group of progressive Democratic congresswomen of color to "go back" to other countries.

The resolution also takes the president to task for "referring to immigrants and asylum seekers as 'invaders'.'"

Trump has a long history of pandering to white suspicions about other ethnic groups, and the resolution criticises him for "saying that Members of Congress who are immigrants (or those of our colleagues who are wrongly assumed to be immigrants) do not belong in Congress or in the United States of America".

Democrats hold a majority in the 435-member House but are outnumbered by Republicans in the Senate, where the resolution is unlikely to be considered.

The four congresswomen — all but one of whom were born in the US — are of Hispanic, Arab, Somali and African-American descent.

Trump has stuck by the provocative comments.

"Our Country is Free, Beautiful and Very Successful. If you hate our Country, or if you are not happy here, you can leave!" the president tweeted Tuesday.

US Representatives Ayanna Pressley (R), Rashida Tlaib (second from R), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (third from R) and Ilhan Omar (L). — AFP
Democratic leaders denounced Trump's remarks, and rallied around the lawmakers — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley.

Omar is the only one born outside the United States.

Slamming the "so-called vote" as a "Democrat con game", Trump urged Republicans not to "show 'weakness' and fall into their trap".

"Those Tweets were NOT Racist. I don't have a Racist bone in my body!" Trump said.

"This should be a vote on the filthy language, statements and lies told by the Democrat Congresswomen, who I truly believe, based on their actions, hate our Country," he wrote.

"Nancy Pelosi tried to push them away, but now they are forever wedded to the Democrat Party," Trump added, in a jab at the House speaker who has had a tenuous relationship with the four left-leaning first-term congresswomen.

Speaking on the House floor prior to the vote, Pelosi said: "Every single member of this institution, Democratic and Republican, should join us in condemning the president's racist tweets."

"To do anything less would be a shocking rejection of our values and a shameful abdication of our oath of office to protect the American people."

"I know racism when I see it. I know racism when I feel it. And at the highest level of government, there's no room for racism," Representative John Lewis, an American civil rights icon, said in remarks on the House floor.

Foreign Minister Quraishi calls ICJ verdict, ‘a victory for Pakistan’

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Quraishi
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Quraishi on Wednesday called the International Court of Justice's verdict on Commander Kulbhushan Jadhav, ‘a victory for Pakistan’.

The ICJ found that India’s submission pertaining to the acquittal and release of Kulbhushan Jadhav could not be upheld. According to the ICJ, the conviction and sentence of Kulbhushan Jadhav were not to be regarded as a violation of Article 36 of the Vienna Convention.

The foreign minister tweeted that Jadhav will remain in Pakistan, and will be treated in accordance with the Pakistani laws.

Commander Jadhav — an Indian Navy officer working for Indian covert agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) — was arrested on March 3, 2016, from Balochistan after he entered into Pakistan from Iran.

Jadhav was tried in a military court which sentenced him to death for espionage and subversive activities.

In a reaction to the move, Pakistan’s relations with neighboring India tensed, and New Delhi approached the ICJ to hear the case. On May 18, 2017, the ICJ ordered Pakistan to halt the execution of Jadhav until a final decision was made in the proceedings.

Govt soon to confiscate properties of Sharif family: Shahzad Akbar
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability Shahzad Akbar says action would soon be taken against “Benami” properties as per law of the land and the recovered money will be deposited to the national exchequer.

He was addressing a press conference along with Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Syed Ali Haider Zaidi in Islamabad.

Shahzad Akbar said 32 “Benami” companies of Co-Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Asif Zardari have been identified and action will be taken in this case as per law of the land if he fails to produce documents proofing legality of such properties within 60 days.

He said these “Benami” companies included sugar mills, cement factory, trading, construction, automobile manufacturing, holding and gas companies and consultant firms.

Shahzad Akbar said several “Benami” plots in posh areas of Karachi have also been identified.

He added that when in 2013-14, the State Bank of Pakistan had asked for paying of capital, they paid it in local account from fake companies.
