Irish drug dealer loses £46m bitcoin codes he hid in fishing rod case

Irish drug dealer loses £46m bitcoin codes he hid in fishing rod case
A jailed Irish drug dealer has lost his ill-gotten £46million Bitcoin fortune after the piece of A4 paper he had the access codes on and hid for safekeeping was 'thrown out' by his ex-landlord.

Clifton Collins, 49, had stashed the codes in the aluminium lid of a fishing rod case at his rented home in Farnaught, Cornamona, County Galway.

After he was arrested for having £1,500 worth of cannabis in his car and sentenced to five years in jail, his landlord cleared out the house.

The fishing rod case was sent to be incinerated. The missing codes have not been found.

Since then, the value has rocketed, and currently sits at £7,427.43 per coin.

Irish police have been frantically searching for the codes. Officers visited the dump where workers said they remembered seeing discarded fishing gear, but that it had probably now been shipped to Germany or China for destruction.

The Irish Criminal Assets Bureau had seized the Bitcoin after applying to take ownership of them as a forfeit under the proceeds of his crime.

However, they have been unable to access them.

Officers are hoping that advances in technology will eventually enable them to access the accounts.

Kashmir issue is major impediment to trade cooperation b/w Pakistan, India: PM Imran

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan
Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan says Kashmir issue is the major impediment to trade cooperation between Pakistan and India.

In an interview with Belgian channel VRT, he said Indian forces have turned the whole valley of Occupied Kashmir into a jail.

The Prime Minister regretted that India is denying Kashmiris their just right of self-determination in line with UN resolutions as well as the promises made by Indian leaders.

Imran Khan said he does not see much hope from the current Modi government in India to resolve the Kashmir issue, because he has an extremist ideology of RSS.

He said the founding fathers of RSS were inspired by the racist Arian philosophy of Hitler and this is why they have put eight million Kashmiris, who are Muslims, in an open prison.

The Prime Minister, however, hoped that in future an Indian government and a strong leadership would want the Kashmir dispute to be resolved.

About Pakistan’s economic situation, he said the last year was very difficult for the government but now the current account deficit has been brought down by 75 percent in one year.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan’s economy will show signs of recovery this year.

Iran slams FATF's politically-motivated move to place Iran on terrorism financing blacklist

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi
Iran says the move by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to place the country on its blacklist was a politically-motivated decision, emphasizing that the Islamic Republic can never be labeled with money laundering and financing of terrorism.

"Unfortunately, this is also part of the politicization of international mechanisms [carried out] by the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the Zionist regime (Israel). Given their influence on these mechanisms, they are trying to politicize them,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi said on Friday.

"Saudi Arabia, as the central bank of terrorism and the Zionist regime as a terrorist state, are providing terrorist groups and organizations around the world with the most support," he added.

However, they blacklist Iran which has the highest level of cooperation and transparency in the field of combating money laundering and financing of terrorists, he added.

Mousavi emphasized that Iran has been implementing all laws and regulations related to money laundering and financing of terrorism for more than two years, saying, "International mechanisms have advantages and disadvantages and placing Iran on FATF's blacklist came despite all efforts we have made inside the country and all regulations we have tried to observe."

The Iranian spokesperson made the remarks in reaction to the global dirty money watchdog's move to place Iran on its blacklist after Tehran refused to fully adopt its provisions.

“Given Iran’s failure to enact the Palermo and Terrorist Financing Conventions in line with the FATF Standards, the FATF fully lifts the suspension of counter-measures and calls on its members and urges all jurisdictions to apply effective counter-measures,” the group’s 39 members said in a statement on Friday.

Meanwhile, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Abdolnasser Hemmati also said on Friday that the FATF's move against the Islamic Republic would fail to create any problem for the country's foreign trade or stability of exchange rate.

"Performance of the Central Bank of Ian over the last year has assured people that such incidents will create no problem for Iran's foreign trade and stability of exchange rate," Hemmati said in an Instagram post.

In cooperation with other economic sectors, the CBI would continue to carry out its mission "in order to meet the country's trade requirements with no stop," he added.

He emphasized that the US and Israeli regime once again showed their animosity towards the Iranian nation within the framework of opposing all recommendations by the FATF's experts about "steps taken by Iran in the field of the fulfillment of its commitments vis-à-vis financing of terrorism and money laundering."

The Iranian chief banker added that such a "politically-motivated and untechnical" attitude has been pursuing towards Iran through different ways over the past three years while all the FATF statements verified the Islamic Republic's major steps to fulfill its commitments.

In October 2018, the purported global finance watchdog gave Iran four months "for the sixth and last time" to ratify bills relating to the campaign against money laundering and funding terrorism.

Out of the four bills required by the FATF, Iran has already accepted two, but the other two bills have been stalled amid worries that they may expose the country to financial spying and new sanctions on Tehran.

To address the issue, Iran has adopted a set of internal regulations to fight money laundering and funding terrorism.

The government has been urging for the ratification of the remaining FATF bills, contending that without them, Iran may not be able to conduct financial transactions with its allies such as Russia and China. It has also warned Iran’s currency might fall if the bills are not ratified.

Iranian authorities have had their reservations about the Palermo and Terrorist Financing Conventions, saying they could be misused by governments like the United States and others to pressure Iran politically.

In October 2018, the Iranian Parliament passed a bill on combating the financing of terrorism as part of the country's implementation of international standards set by the FATF.

The combating the financing of terrorism (CFT) bill, one of four put forward by the government to meet FATF demands, was passed by 143 votes to 120.

US fears democracy in Iran, will have to learn to respect it: Foreign Ministry

US fears democracy in Iran, will have to learn to respect it
Iran's Foreign Ministry says new American sanctions targeting members of Iran's Guardian Council and its Elections Supervision Committee show that the US "fears democracy in Iran", and will have to learn to respect it.

"Those who imposed sanctions, economic terrorism and a campaign of 'maximum pressure' on more than 83 million Iranians - yet failed to achieve their goals - have now turned to targeting Iran's electoral establishments," Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said on Friday.

Noting that Iran has responded with "maximum resistance" against the US, Mousavi said "it is the Americans who will ultimately submit to the will of the Iranian nation and learn to engage with this honorable and enduring nation with respect".

On Thursday, the US imposed sanctions on five senior members of Iran’s Guardian Council, which is responsible for supervising the electoral process in the country, including the parliamentary elections which are held across the country.

US special representative for Iran Brian Hook - who announced the measures Thursday - accused the officials of preventing free and fair elections.

The sanctions have been ridiculed by Secretary of Iran's Guardian Council Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, who was among the sanctioned officials.

"We can't go to the US for Christmas celebrations any longer," Ayatollah Jannati said on Friday.

The sanctions come as the US has imposed a robust campaign of sanctions coupled with political and military provocations targeting Tehran ever since withdrawing from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in May 2018.

In his Friday remarks, Mousavi said that the Iranian establishment, government and people give "no value" to Washington and its "idiotic sanctions" and will continue onward "with strength".

"These actions signify nothing but the failure and hopelessness of the 'maximum pressure' policy of the American regime," he said.

PPP slams PTI for compromising on ‘economic rights’ of people

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari slammed the PTI-led government for compromising on the ‘economic rights of the people of Pakistan’ and accepting all the demands put forward by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The PPP chairman, while speaking to the media in Lahore, alleged that the incumbent government does not know how to run the country’s economy.

Bilawal said that his party during its tenure had also approached the IMF, saying that the PPP government 'protected the interest of the people' at that time.

“Whenever they wanted to burden the people of Pakistan then we would fight them,” said Bilawal while talking about the PPP’s decision to approach the IMF.

“The government is not fulfilling the promises it made, and the promises they made were incorrect,” said the PPP chairman. He further lamented that the government took over a year to approach the IMF over a bailout package.

On July 3, the IMF Executive Board had approved a three-year bailout package worth $6 billion to Pakistan. Soon after the agreement was signed, Pakistan had received the first tranche of a loan of $991.4 million from the fund.

The PPP chairman said that the government cannot document the economy at one go when it knows that a “huge section of Pakistan’s economy is undocumented”.

“You are making the businesses afraid. By setting the CNIC requirement you have taken the energy out of the economy,” lamented Bilawal. He added that the government needs to stop believing that those who are not in the tax net are corrupt.

“It is your system which is corrupt and inefficient,” said the PPP chairman.

PSL 5: First match to play between Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi today

PSL First match between Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi
The inaugural match of PSL was played between defending champions Quetta Gladiators and two-time winners Islamabad United, which the Gladiators won by three wickets last night at the National Stadium Karachi.

Today, on the second day of the tournament, there will be two matches: first between Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi at 3-00 pm at the same venue and later the second between Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans at 7-00 pm at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

In the first match, all rounder Imad Wasim will lead the Kings, the hosts, while the Zalmi will be captained by the West Indies' veteran cricketer Darren Sammy, who has always been very popular to the Pakistani cricket lovers.

Peshawar Zalmi are the one-time winners as they had received the coveted PSL trophy in the second edition - in 2017 whereas they have been the runners-up for the last two consecutive years - in 2018 and 2019.

On the other side, Karachi Kings could not win the tournament nor they were the runners-up. They achieved the fourth position in the first and the fourth editions - in 2016 and 2019 and placed third in two successive editions - 2017 and 2018.

In today's match, both teams are balanced but the Zalmi are looking a better side on the basis of their past performance with one first and two second spots. They were the runners-up for the last two successive years.

They have a galaxy of national and international stars like Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Kieron Pollard, Carlos Brathwaite, Wahab Riaz and Sammy along with Hasan Ali, Rahat Ali, Liam Dawson, Lewis Gregory, Imam-ul-Haq, Liam Livingstone, Umar Amin and Tom Banton.

Karachi Kings on other hand are not looking much better sider on paper as they have not so many big names but they have a great consistant batsman Babar Azam who can steer the Kings to win the match.

Besides Babar, they have other good players like Mohammad Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Cameron Delport, Chadwick Walton and Imad. Sharjeel Khan is also appearing in this edition after a long absence due to ban.

FATF: Pakistan likely to stay on the “grey list"

Pakistan likely to stay on the “grey list
Pakistan is likely to stay on the “grey list” of the Financial Action Task Force, which has agreed to give Islamabad time until October to fully implement the 27-point Action Plan given by the global financial watchdog.

The decision will be announced on Friday at the end of the FATF plenary, which is currently ongoing in the French capital of Paris.

The FATF plenary pored over a report submitted by Pakistan detailing progress on the implementation of the 27-point Action Plan, according to sources in the finance ministry.

Noting compliance on 14 points, the global financial watchdog agreed to give Pakistan more time – until October 2020 – to fully comply with the remaining 13 points. Until then, Pakistan will remain on the “grey list”. The decision will formally be announced on Friday.

The sources said that the meeting has asked Pakistan to improve prosecution and conviction in terror-financing cases. It has also called for effective legislation to curb money laundering.

The decision might come as a huge disappointment for India which has been lobbying to get Pakistan “blacklisted” by FATF. Last year, Prime Minister Imran Khan said in an interview with Al Jazeera TV that India wanted to bankrupt Pakistan and push it into the FATF blacklist.

The court after hearing the arguments extended judicial remand of Abbasi and adjourned hearing till March 9.

Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Miftah Ismail, ex-PSO MD Imranul Haq and others are facing charges of corruption over awarding a LNG import contract allegedly at exorbitant rates in 2015, which caused a big loss to the national exchequer.

High voter turnout big contributor to Iran’s diplomacy against US: FM Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has called for a high turnout in Friday’s parliamentary elections, saying massive participation will strengthen the country’s diplomacy to counter US policies.

“If we want to strengthen the hand of my team in foreign policy [arena] so that they can more seriously counter the sanctions… we have to compel the US to come back to the negotiating table, not bilateral talks but the negotiations that the US has left and that is the P5+1 talks,” Zarif told reporters on Wednesday on the sidelines of a cabinet session.

“As the Leader said for the US to wake up to its defeat and come back to the negotiating table, lift sanctions and make up for the losses incurred on the Iranian nation, it needs to know and see that the sanctions have been ineffective and people participate in the elections fervently. This is the biggest boost to the Islamic Republic’s diplomacy to counter the US’ policies,” he added.

Zarif said it is time that the US understood its “maximum pressure policy” had failed.

The top Iranian diplomat said the Iranians showed through their massive participation for the funeral processions of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, that they do not accept the US’ policies and would defend their country against Washington.

“The best manifestation for this support is participation in the election,” he added.

Iran is to hold the parliamentary elections on February 21 for the 11th Majlis (Parliament) since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

More than 7,000 candidates are to vie in the polls for 290 seats, five of them representing religious minorities.

Earlier on Wednesday, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani also said an inclusive and enthusiastic popular turnout in this Friday's parliamentary elections will enrage the United States, stressing the significant role of the legislative chamber in moving forward government efforts to thwart Washington’s sanctions.

Iran can triumph over the US pressure campaign through perseverance and strength, Rouhani told the Wednesday cabinet session.

Also on Tuesday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iran are taking place at a critical time of US pressure and attempts to drive a wedge between the Iranian nation and government, calling for a large turnout in the polls to foil Washington's “evil intentions.”

The Leader called elections a contributor to the strength of the country and said the US formed think tanks of dozens or hundreds of people to plan to alienate the Iranian people and the youth in particular from the government.

Also in his remarks, Zarif commented on the foreign countries leaving Iran due to the US sanctions and criticized the Europeans for submitting to US pressures.

“The Europeans did not support the US sanctions but yielded to them and proved they are submissive to pressures,” the Iranian foreign minister said.

He added that the Europeans’ failure to stand up to the US bullying was of no avail as Washington again threatened to place more duties on European automobile imports and approved sanctions on firms that help finish a gas pipeline into the European Union.

In May 2018, Washington in a unilateral move left the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries -- the US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany -- and reimposed the sanctions that had been lifted under the agreement.

Europe later set up a special trading mechanism called INSTEX to protect trade with Iran after Washington’s withdrawal.

However, despite repeated promises by the EU to make the mechanism operational, it has yet to complete any transactions.

One year after the US pullout and the Europeans’ failure to maintain business with Tehran in the face of the US sanctions, Iran started taking steps in scaling back its obligations under the JCPOA, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Iran, however, says it will reverse the measures once the Europeans take “concrete” measures and provide “meaningful” economic benefits to the country.

PM Imran gave ‘NRO to friends’ by hiding wheat, sugar crisis report: Shahbaz Sharif

shahbaz sharif
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that PM Imran Khan gave NRO-like concession to his ‘friends’ by hiding the investigation report of the ongoing wheat and sugar crisis.

The opposition leader in the National Assembly, in a statement, said that the PTI government’s silence over the crisis is tantamount to confessing the crime.

“Niazi (PM Imran) has proven that he is an accomplice of the culprits by not making the report public,” said the PML-N president.

Shehbaz Sharif said that to arrest the smugglers and hoarders of wheat and sugar "the PM House should be raided".

He further said that those behind hoarding and profiteering of edibles should be brought forth.

Last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan had admitted that the sugar and wheat crisis had originated as a result of his government's negligence, saying that an investigation was being conducted to find out who was responsible for it.

"This was our [government] negligence, I admit this," he said. "I am telling you this today, we are conducting an investigation into this [wheat and sugar crisis] and we are slowly getting to know who is involved. I promise you, whoever is involved in the crisis, we will not leave that person," he said.

Wheat prices across the country sky rocketed last month after fears of a looming shortage of wheat and sugar hit markets. The government had said it was doing all it could to contain the crisis, amid allegations from the opposition that the government was ill-equipped to deal with the issue.

The problem was exacerbated by a decision to export 200,000 to 400,000 tons of wheat, keeping in view surplus stocks on the basis of estimates presented by Ministry of National Food Security and Research, but the actual exports of wheat crossed 640,000 tons.
