Tear gas fired at anti-coup rallies in Sudan

Tear gas fired at anti-coup rallies in Sudan
Thousands of Sudanese protesters rallied on Saturday two months after a military coup, demanding soldiers “go back to the barracks” and calling for a transition to civilian rule.

Waving flags, beating drums, dancing and chanting, crowds marched on the streets of Khartoum despite a heavy deployment of security forces — who later fired tear gas to break them up.

Officers had earlier blocked bridges connecting the capital to suburbs, cut phone lines and restricted the internet ahead of the planned protests.

At least 48 people have died in crackdowns during weeks of demonstrations, according to the independent Doctors’ Committee, and Khartoum’s state governor has warned that security forces “will deal with those who break the law and create chaos”.

Demonstrators converged on the presidential palace in Khartoum, the headquarters of the military government in control since General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan seized power on October 25.

Burhan held civilian leader Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok effectively under house arrest for weeks, but after international pressure reinstated him on November 21 under a deal promising elections for July 2023.

Limited operations of much-awaited Green Line bus kick off in Karachi

Limited operations of much-awaited Green Line bus kick off in Karachi
Governor Sindh Imran Ismail on Saturday took a ride on Karachi’s new Green Line bus, kicking off initial operations for a much-awaited project which was stalled for the last five years.

Following the inspection of his bus, he told the media that the elevators of the Green Line bus "aren’t malfunctioning". He said that all stations of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) will be fully operational from January 10, 2022.

Ismail said that the minimum bus fare will be Rs15 and the maximum will amount to Rs55. Addressing the confusion regarding the card for the service, he clarified that the bus card is confusing people but this will be charged like any mobile phone card.

It may be recalled that Prime Minister Imran Khan had inaugurated the bus service project on December 10 during his one-day visit to Karachi.

The inauguration was held at the main station of the Green Line project at Numaish Chowrangi.

Travellers must note that 11 out of 22 stations will remain operational till January 10 with 25 out of the total 80 hybrid energy buses to operate for only four hours a day, from 8am to 12pm.

According to Sindh Infrastructure Development Company (SIDCL) officials, buses, stations, and working hours will be increased after January 10.

The buses will shuttle between Surjani town, Abdullah Chowk, and Numaish Chowrangi. These buses will arrive at the stations every five minutes.

The buses can accommodate more than 150 people at a time and special seats have been reserved for disabled people.

Those people who plan to travel on a daily basis can also have cards made that can be recharged just like mobile cards.

The bus service will be monitored by CCTV cameras and the name of the station where the bus will stop will appear on a screen inside the bus.

Shaukat Tarin sworn in as senator

Shaukat Tarin
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin was sworn in as a senator after he won the by-election for a general seat in the Senate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday.

Tarin bagged 87 votes, while according to KP Health Minister Taimur Khan Jhagra, four votes were rejected and five lawmakers did not partake in the elections.

The seat fell vacant last month after PTI’s Ayub Afridi had resigned from the Senate to make way for Tarin. As per the rules, when a seat falls vacant, the Election Commission of Pakistan is bound to hold elections on it within 30 days.

It should be noted that to get elected, a candidate needs more than 50% votes of the 145 members. The PTI has 94 members in the provincial assembly, the JUI-F has 15, ANP 12, PML-N 7, PPP five, the Balochistan Awami Party four, Jamaat-e-Islami three, and the PML-Q each have one member.

The government is set to present a Rs360 billion mini-budget before the Parliament later this week for withdrawal of General Sales Tax (GST) exemptions and slapping standard rate of 17% on import of essential consumable and industrial goods.

It was important for Tarin to get elected as a senator as according to the rules, only lawmakers can present the budget in Parliament.

A day earlier, the ECP had issued a notification for Tarin's election as a senator.

Tesla pulls games on moving car screens after US safety probe

Tesla pulls games on moving car screens after US safety probe
Electric carmaker Tesla Inc will stop allowing video games to be played on vehicle screens while its cars are moving, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Thursday.

The move follows an announcement by the NHTSA on Wednesday that it had opened a formal safety investigation on 580,000 Tesla vehicles sold since 2017 over the automaker's decision to allow games to be played on the front center touchscreen while they are in motion.

This functionality, referred to as “Passenger Play,” may distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash, the NHTSA has said.

Tesla has informed the NHTSA that a software update will lock the "Passenger Play" feature and make it unusable when the vehicle is in motion, a spokesperson for the agency said in a statement.

"The NHTSA constantly assesses how manufacturers identify and safeguard against distraction hazards that may arise due to faults, misuse, or intended use of convenience technologies, including infotainment screens," the agency said.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Safety advocates have raised concerns that drivers may not pay attention on the road, especially when Tesla vehicles are operating in semi-autonomous mode known as Autopilot.

A driver's distraction - likely from a phone game application - was one of the causes of a fatal crash of a Tesla car operating in Autopilot in California in 2018, according to a report by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The NHTSA in August opened a safety investigation on 765,000 Tesla vehicles over its Autopilot system after a series of crashes involving the system and parked emergency vehicles.

Man Utd close to full strength after Covid outbreak: Rangnick

Man Utd close to full strength after Covid outbreak
Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick has almost a full squad to choose from for Monday's Premier League clash at Newcastle after a Covid-19 outbreak saw their last two matches postponed.

Only the injured Paul Pogba is unavailable to the interim manager for the Red Devils first game in 16 days.

United's games against Brentford and Brighton were among the 12 Premier League games to be called off over the past two weeks due to a wave of coronavirus infections as Britain battles record case numbers.

"The last training session we had eight outfield players and three goalkeepers and then we closed down the training ground in order to break the chain," said Rangnick on Thursday.

"Today was the third day of training this week and we had 25 outfield players. Paul Pogba is still the only one missing out, everyone (else) was on board."

Rangnick added that the vast majority of those to have Covid had little or no symptoms, which allowed them to remain in shape while training from home.

"The development of the last week was extremely positive. As far as I could see in training they are all in good shape," he added.

"They did their homework. They all have their schedule to train at home.

"They stick to that schedule and programme and from what I saw in training most of them - if not all of them - might be available."

The fixture congestion caused by a series of postponements has again raised concerns over player welfare.

Rangnick backed the calls of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for the reintroduction of five substitutions to ease the burden.

The Premier League was one of the few top European leagues to revert to three changes after five substitutes were allowed for the end of the 2019/20 season when play resumed after a three-month break caused by the pandemic.

"I think it was the right decision to have more options to change players to save energy for players, especially if they have just recovered from Covid," said Rangnick.

"The same is true right now. We have a similar situation to one-and-a-half years ago, so I see no reason why it shouldn't be the same now.

"As far as I know in Europe, England is the only country that only allows three subs. In the other four big leagues in Europe you can substitute five players."

And he also suggested the League Cup could be scrapped to create extra space in the calendar.

Klopp and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte have requested that their League Cup semi-finals against Arsenal and Chelsea respectively be changed from two-legged tie to one-off games.

"England is the only top league that plays two cup competitions. In France they abolished the second one," said Rangnick. "We are the only country that plays two cup competitions, this is something we could speak about and discuss."

'Soldiers still getting martyred': Rabbani demands clarity over govt-TTP deal

Former Senate chairman Senator Raza Rabbani
Former Senate chairman Senator Raza Rabbani on Friday demanded clarity over the deal struck between the government and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Rabbani, speaking during a session of the Senate, said despite the ceasefire between the two sides, Pakistan Army's soldiers were still getting martyred.

"Riasat-e-Madina cannot be established on secretive agreements [...] Pakistan's civil-military bureaucracy will have to be answerable before the Parliament," he said.

The former chairman of the Senate said that Pakistan's civil and military bureaucracy would have to answer to the Parliament, adding that the ground reality is that the state of Pakistan refers to the civil and military bureaucracy of Pakistan.

"The state of Pakistan (unfortunately) does not mean the people sitting in Parliament," he said. "The state will have to inform the people under what conditions this ceasefire deal was reached."

The PPP stalwart said that despite the ceasefire, various groups are reorganising in Afghanistan.

"Until the root causes of the problems are ascertained issues will continue to arise," he said.

The senator regretted that as extremist groups gained footing in the country, "the state remained a silent spectator".

"Extremist groups have torn up the state's writ to shreds," he said.

Speaking of missing persons, Rabbani said that the families of such people continue to search for them "while the state is busy hiding them".

The senator also spoke of reports that Taliban forces at the Pak-Afghan border had prevented fencing work.

"Will the foreign minister brief the parliament about this?" he asked.

Rabbani said that the state could not afford any more secret agreements. "What would be the future structure of the state [then]?" he asked.

He called for the National Action Plan to be debated once more in Parliament and for measures to be taken so it can be implemented.

He further said that the state "used religion to advance its political agenda".

3 injured in explosion in sewerage line at Karachi's Mehmoodabad

3 injured in explosion in sewerage line at Karachi's Mehmoodabad
Three people were injured on Friday in a blast in a sewerage line in Mehmoodabad, according to police.

A statement from Mehmoodabad Station House Officer Aijaz Pathan said the blast occurred in a sewerage line at Parsi Gate due to the accumulation of gas. A motorcycle mechanic shop that was situated on the sewerage line also collapsed, according to the statement.

It added that three people sustained minor injuries and were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment. A bomb disposal team was also summoned to the spot and an investigation was underway.

A statement from the Edhi Foundation identified the three injured as Bilal, 17, Dilawar, 20, and John, 11. The three were taken to the hospital in an ambulance of the rescue service.

This is the second blast to be reported in the city this month.

On December 18, an explosion occurred in a nullah (drain) located underneath a private bank near Paracha Chowk in Shershah, claiming the lives of 17 persons. The bank had earlier been served a notice to vacate the premises so the nullah could be cleaned up.

Site-B police registered a first information report of the incident against the "persons responsible for the construction of the building and its owner" under various charges including manslaughter, said an area police officer.

Earlier on October 29, four people were killed and nine others injured in an explosion in a North Nazimabad petrol pump. Police later said that a short circuit inside a closed electric room of a fuel station with no vents coupled with the accumulation of gases had appeared to be the cause of the big explosion

Bangladesh ferry fire kills at least 37

Bangladesh ferry fire kills at least 37
At least 37 people were killed when an overcrowded night ferry caught fire in Bangladesh on Friday, police said, as terrified passengers jumped overboard to escape the blaze.

The latest maritime tragedy to hit the impoverished low-lying nation happened in the early hours in a river near Jhalokathi, 250 kilometres (160 miles) south of Dhaka.

"We have recovered 37 bodies. The death toll may rise. Most died from the fire and a few by drowning after many people jumped into the river," local police chief Moinul Islam told AFP.

The blaze was believed to have originated in the engine room and ripped through the ferry, Islam said. Despite having an official capacity of 310 the vessel was carrying at least 500 people, many of who were returning home from the capital.

"We have sent some 100 people with burn injuries to hospitals in Barisal," he said.

Witnesses said the fire originated at around 3:00 am (2100 GMT) and quickly spread.

"We were sleeping on a mat on the ground floor deck. All the passengers were sleeping. My nine-year-old grandson, Nayeem, was with me, he jumped into the river. I don´t know what happened to him," said an elderly grandmother.

Other survivors said they saw a small fire in the engine room as soon as the packed ferry set off from the Sadarghat river station in Dhaka at 9:00 pm on Thursday.

"A lot of people ran for safety as the fire spread. A lot of people could not get out of their cabins where they were sleeping. Many jumped into the river," said another survivor at Barisal Medical College Hospital.

Johar Ali, the local district administrator, said rescuers arrived at the scene within an hour after the fire broke out and rushed the injured to nearby hospitals.

"We spoke to passengers. And they said there were between 500 and 700 passengers," he told AFP.

"The fire went on for four or five hours before it was doused. The entire [ferry] has been gutted. But they managed to bring it to the shore," Ali said.

Local television showed images of burnt motorcycles and gutted cabins inside the boat.

Shell-shocked survivors and their relatives crowded the shore as fire service and coast guard divers scoured the muddy waters.

The accident was the latest in a string of similar incidents in the delta country crisscrossed by rivers.

Experts in the South Asian nation of 170 million people blame poor maintenance, lax safety standards at shipyards and overcrowding.

In August at least 21 people were killed when a boat packed with passengers and a sand-laden cargo ship collided. In April and May, 54 were killed in two separate accidents.

In June last year, a ferry sank in Dhaka after it was hit from behind by another ferry, killing at least 32 people. In February 2015, at least 78 people died when an overcrowded ship collided with a cargo vessel.

Fires are also a regular source of tragedy. In July, 52 people perished in a blaze in a food and beverage factory in Rupganj, an industrial town outside Dhaka.

And at least 70 people died in February 2019 when fire tore through Dhaka apartments where chemicals were illegally stored.

Pakistan saddened by loss of lives: MOFA

A statement issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan expressed grief over the unfortunate incident and offered condolences to the affected families and Bangladesh on the country's behalf.

The MOFA also expressed solidarity and support with the people of Bangladesh in their moment of grief.

"Government and people of Pakistan are deeply saddened by the loss of precious lives in a ferry accident in Jhalakathi district in Bangladesh. Our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the Government of Bangladesh," the statement read.

At this moment of grief, our thoughts and prayers are with the brotherly people of Bangladesh, it added.

The PML-N president said the time has come to end this government "which was formed as a result of rigging", as he claimed that Quaid-e-Azam "must be turning in his grave".

Slamming the PTI for its policies, he said: "I had revealed this 3.5 years ago that a NAB-Niazi nexus exists. They have mortgaged the country to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)."

Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Imran Khan, he said if the premier likes unveiling projects "so much", he should have informed him, as he would award him a plaque for "unveiling so many plaques".

PTI was the largest party in KP's village councils says Fawad

PTI was the largest party in KP's village councils says Fawad
Federal Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry derided opposition parties on Thursday, saying that PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz was "celebrating her defeat" in the recently held first phase of local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

Speaking to media in Lahore alongside Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Communication Dr Shahbaz Gill, Chaudhry said:

"Instead (of celebrating), they [PPP and PML-N] should have visited their party workers in KP to boost their morale. They should have done national politics," the information minister said.

In the elections held in the 17 districts of KP on December 19, the PTI, which has been in power in the province since 2013, showed a dismal performance, conceding ground to the the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F).According to the provisional results of 47 of the 63 tehsils declared by the Election Commission of Pakistan, the JUI-F won 17 seats of mayor/chairperson while the PTI came in second by securing 12 seats. Independent candidates grabbed the third highest number of seats at seven, followed by Awami National Party at six, PML-N at three and Jamaat-i-Islami, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Tehreek-i-Islahat Pakistan bagging one seat each.

In provincial capital Peshawar, the JUI-F stunned the PTI with a definitive lead in the contest for the mayor of the city. JUI-F candidate Haji Zubair Ali secured 62,388 votes against 50,659 votes secured by PTI’s Rizwan Bangash.

However, Chaudhry claimed on Thursday that it had been proved after the elections that the PTI was the largest party in KP's village councils, adding that the two biggest opposition parties in the National Assembly, the PPP and the PML-N, "did not get any votes there [in KP]" and that they are "celebrating the end of their parties".

"And we are competing against political dwarfs," he continued. "We are facing the PPP in some areas [of the country], the PML-N in other areas and competing against the JUI-F at some places. None of them have a man of Imran Khan's stature."

He further commented that the "so-called politics of big [opposition] parties has been surviving only because of television coverage."

Their politics, he said, would end if they were not given any television coverage for two to four days as "there is no one from among them on the ground".

Karachi reports six more suspected cases of Omicron variant: sources

Karachi reports six more suspected cases of Omicron variant
Karachi has reported six new suspected cases of the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus, sources within Sindh Health Department said Thursday.

The sources said that the suspected patients have a travel history. Four of them arrived in Karachi from South Africa, where the Omicron variant originated, and two others from Britain.

They said that the samples taken from the suspected patients have been sent to a private hospital for further confirmation and the patients have been shifted to a quarantine centre.

Pakistan has so far reported one confirmed and 33 suspected cases of Omicron, apart from the latest suspected cases from Karachi.

The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), on December 13, had confirmed it had detected Pakistan's first-ever case of the Omicron variant of coronavirus in a patient — who had no travel history — through gene-sequencing.

A second case of the Omicron variant of coronavirus had been reported from Karachi, sources within the Sindh Health Department had said later in the week.

Moreover, 32 suspected cases were reported in Balochistan's Kalat district during a vaccination and diagnostic process.

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), however, has not yet confirmed any cases of the strain in Kalat.

N.Korea's Kim praises 'fresh heyday' in China relations as longtime envoy departs

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un praised outgoing Chinese Ambassador Li Jinjun for helping to improve relations between Pyongyang and Beijing, state media reported on Thursday, as the envoy left office after seven years in the post.

Kim's comments were conveyed to Li by Choe Ryong Hae, a top official in the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, state news agency KCNA said. Li also met with North Korean premier Kim Tok Hun, KCNA reported.

"Kim Jong Un highly praised the ambassador for successfully assisting several DPRK-China summit meetings over the past seven years, making much effort to develop the friendly relations between the two parties and the two countries and sharing bitters and sweets with the Korean people," Choe told Li, using the initials of North Korea's official name.

Kim is very satisfied that the North Korea-China relationship has entered a "fresh heyday" under the leadership of the ruling parties in each country, Choe said.

Li asked Choe to express his gratitude to Kim and congratulated the North Korean people on "making progress in all fields of socialist construction," KCNA said.

China has been North Korea's only major ally since the two signed a treaty in 1961, and international sanctions imposed over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programmes have made it more dependent than ever on Beijing for trade and other support.

Since Li was appointed in 2015, relations between the two countries have seen major ups and downs.

Kim sent China-North Korea relations to a historical low by prioritising nuclear weapons and missiles development, then harshly criticising Beijing when it supported international sanctions

Starting in 2018, however, Kim managed to quickly repair ties and made his first known international trip as leader to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Xi later visited Pyongyang, the first by a Chinese leader in 14 years.

Li was one of a diminishing number of foreign diplomats in Pyongyang, as many embassies closed during North Korea's strict anti-pandemic lockdown that blocked the rotation of new staff or ambassadors.

Suicide bomber killed at Kabul passport office gate
A suicide bomber was killed at the gate of a passport office in the Afghan capital Kabul on Thursday, a government spokesman said, and several people were injured in the blast, according to unconfirmed reports.

A spokesman for Afghanistan's interior ministry said the attacker was shot and killed while trying to enter the passport office premises.

One member of the Taliban who was a witness told Reuters multiple people were injured, and the building and streets around the area were locked down by Taliban security forces.

Large crowds of Afghans have been thronging outside the passport office in a bid to get travel documents in recent days after the service was restarted after weeks of suspension.

Officials said that Thursdays are reserved as a special day for Taliban officials to visit the passport office to make travel documents.

AstraZeneca vaccine booster works against Omicron, Oxford lab study finds

AstraZeneca vaccine
A three-dose course of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine is effective against the rapidly-spreading Omicron coronavirus variant, the pharmaceutical company said on Thursday, citing data from an Oxford University lab study.

Findings from the study, yet to be published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, match those from rivals Pfizer-BioNTech, and Moderna which have also found a third dose of their shots works against Omicron.

The study on AstraZeneca's vaccine, Vaxzevria, showed that after a three-dose course of the vaccine, neutralising levels against Omicron were broadly similar to those against the virus's Delta variant after two doses.

The London-listed company said researchers at Oxford University who carried out the study were independent from those who worked on the vaccine with AstraZeneca.

"As we better understand Omicron, we believe we will find that T-cell response provides durable protection against severe disease and hospitalisations," Mene Pangalos, the head of AstraZeneca's biopharmaceuticals R&D said, referring to a critical component of the immune system that respond to fight infection.

Antibody levels against Omicron after the booster shot were higher than antibodies in people who had been infected with and recovered naturally from COVID-19, the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker added.

Although the early data is positive for the company, AstraZeneca said on Tuesday it was working with its partner Oxford University to produce a vaccine tailored for Omicron, joining similar efforts from other vaccine-makers.

The Oxford study analysed blood samples from those infected with COVID-19, those vaccinated with two doses and a booster, and those previously infected with other variants of concern. It included samples from 41 people given three doses of Vaxzevria.

Scientists and governments are scrambling to bolster defences against Omicron with shots and therapies, as the variant threatens to become dominant globally and has prompted renewed curbs ahead of the holidays to contain infections.

Britain earlier this month backed the use of boosters after it found that a third dose significantly restored protection against mild disease caused by Omicron, in part reversing an otherwise steep drop in vaccine effectiveness.

Govt to bring mini-budget through ordinance: Rabbani

Senator Raza Rabbani
Senator Raza Rabbani on Wednesday claimed that the PTI-led government was in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to introduce the mini-budget through an ordinance.

Speaking during the Senate session, the PPP senator maintained that after the passage of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Amendment Bill, the central bank would only be accountable to the IMF.

“It was also not considered appropriate to keep parliament informed on important strategic or economic decisions,” he added.

Leader of the House Shahzad Waseem responded that Rabbani seemed to be a bit too worried over ordinances.

“Both the houses are working now. How will the government introduce an ordinance in these circumstances?” he added.

Waseem claimed that the mini-budget had not come up in the federal cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

“When the mini-budget comes, it won’t be passed without a debate.”

The session of the upper house of parliament was presided over by its Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani.

The senators observed a one-minute silence to pay their respects to the victim of Sialkot tragedy, Priyantha Kumara, and decided to hold a thorough debate on the gruesome killing of the Sri Lankan national on Friday (today) by suspending all other items on the agenda.

The commerce ministry in its written response informed the House that there had been a significant increase in imports against last year – around 64% in the first four months of the current fiscal.

From July to October 2021, the import bill stood at $25.10 billion. In the previous fiscal during the same period, the import bill stood at $15.20 billion.

The ministry attributed the rise in imports to the rising oil, gas, coal and food prices.

It added that steps were being taken to discourage imports.

“The SBP has imposed 100% cash margin requirement on the import of 25 items.”

During Question Hour, Commerce Adviser Abdul Razzaq Dawood said Pakistan was discussing transit trade with Uzbekistan.

“Pakistan has started trade with Uzbekistan through trucks,” he added.

“A shipment of mangoes from Pakistan was sent to Uzbekistan on trucks.”

The adviser further said trade matters with Uzbekistan would be settled by June 2022.

“We will be visiting Uzbekistan again next month. Pakistan intends to trade with Uzbekistan in many areas.”

The adviser further said ever since the Taliban government took over in Afghanistan, duties had been reduced on many items for the neighbouring country as it did not have dollars.

Dawood said he had visited Iran two months ago and there could be no agreement through banking with it because of the sanctions on that country.

However, he added that Iran was an important country for Pakistan and there would be agreements with it for barter trade and LNG.

The finance ministry presented details of sales tax rates on petroleum products from August 2018 to November 2021.

Senator Rana Maqbool pointed out that the price of petrol in the global market had decreased by $15 per barrel.

“Why haven’t we passed on the relief to our people?” he asked.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan replied that the price of petrol in Pakistan was the cheapest in the region.

“We have reduced sales tax [on petrol] to 1.30%.”

ECP reserves verdict in Faisal Vawda disqualification case

ECP reserves verdict in Faisal Vawda disqualification case
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has reserved its verdict on a disqualification petition filed against PTI leader Faisal Vawda, reported on Thursday.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja heard the petition filed against Vawda in Islamabad pertaining to his dual citizenship.
During the hearing, the Chief Election Commissioner, while talking to PPP leader Qadir Khan Mandokhel who petitioned the case, said: "You had said that the final arguments had been presented. Do you want to present more arguments or documents?"

Qadir Mandokhel said that this is the 30th hearing. He said the commission has been giving a warning for the last one and a half years, adding that the questions already asked to the commission should be answered first and that he did not have additional arguments.

Sikandar Sultan Raja asked that whether the questions had been answered or not. "It is the job of the commission to have the final word. This is the last time," he said.
Qadir Mandokhel stated that Faisal Vawda had American citizenship at the time he submitted nomination papers.

The concerned RO was not punished, and the RO rejected my papers instead of disqualifying Faisal Vawda, he said, adding that he sent a notice to the US embassy, to which they said that they do not respond to individuals.

"I told the ECP to ask the US embassy," he lamented.

The petitioner said that Vawda has declared property in a foreign country and that the commission should inquire from the US Consulate about his citizenship.

"At the last hearing, you said that the arguments were complete. However, today you are talking about something new. The consulate is not answerable to the Election Commission, and the Commission cannot write to them," the CEC responded.

Asif Mehmood, the petitioner's lawyer, stated that they have provided all written responses and that the commission should decide whether Faisal Vawda had dual citizenship when submitting nomination papers or not.

Mandokhel claimed that Faisal Vawda submitted a false affidavit while submitting nomination papers and concealed dual citizenship while scrutinising the nomination papers.

Vawda's lawyer said in his arguments that the petitioners are relying on the certificate of renunciation of citizenship.
Faisal Vawda has always been a Pakistani citizen, and he never gave up Pakistani citizenship, said his lawyer.

Lawyer Barrister Moeed further said that Faisal had never applied for citizenship of another country. According to his birth certificate, he was born in the United States, the lawyer said.

Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja inquired about the date of the cancellation of citizenship and whether the cancellation of a passport also revokes citizenship.

If you have dual citizenship, you will have a NICOP, but you will not have a Pakistani identity card, he said, adding that a normal identity card is not evidence that you do not have dual citizenship.

The lawyer argued that, according to Nadra, Faisal Vawda's US citizenship was seized on May 29, 2018. Faisal Vawda is a Pakistani citizen, he stated.

"Where did the knowledge of NADRA come from?" the Chief Election Commissioner inquired, asking whether Nadra could issue a certificate stating that a person is only a Pakistani citizen.

US ready to infuse liquidity into Afghan economy

US ready to infuse liquidity into Afghan economy
The United States is working with various UN agencies to find ways for infusing liquidity into the Afghan economy, the US State Department said.

The announcement, made at a news briefing in Washington, followed another statement by a State Department official in Islamabad on Monday, saying that the United States would show greater flexibility on financial sanctions imposed on Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover.

Earlier this week, thirty-nine lawmakers sent a letter to US secretaries of state and treasury, asking them to help rebuild Afghanistan’s failing economy and to unfreeze the country’s assets. The United Nations has also backed this call.

“We are working with various UN bodies, including the UNDP, to find creative ways that we can infuse not only humanitarian aid but also liquidity into the Afghan economy,” State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said at the briefing in Washington.

The United States, he said, also supported the release of $280 million to Afghanistan last week from a World Bank fund. Mr Price pointed out that since August, the United States has sent $208 million of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, which adds up to $475 million this year.

The US official acknowledged that Afghanistan needed more than just humanitarian assistance and that’s why the US Treasury had relaxed some of the sanctions imposed after Aug 15, when the Taliban seized Kabul.

These first signs of flexibility in the US stance on Afghanistan followed multiple calls for Washington to review its punishing sanctions on Afghanistan’s Taliban regime. While the sanctions were already in place, the United States also froze about $9.5bn in assets and loans after the Taliban takeover.

The move dealt a devastating blow to Afghanistan’s fragile economy that’s heavily reliant on donor assistance. This also aggravated the country’s humanitarian crisis caused by drought and more than four decades of civil war.

At the State Department briefing, Spokesman Price said that Afghanistan’s economic crisis was not “entirely unique” to the present. “This is something that was pre-existing before the withdrawal of American military forces, but it’s also something that has become more acute,” he said.

Noting that factors like the ongoing drought and dependence on foreign aid were not new, he said: “We absolutely believe there is an urgent humanitarian situation in Afghanistan now. As we are now in the winter months, our concern for the wellbeing of the Afghan people is further pronounced.”

Mr Price pointed out that US Special Representative for Afghanistan Tom West recently attended an OIC meeting in Islamabad, where a trust fund was set up for sending money to the people of Afghanistan.

Mr Price said that while the US will continue to be the world’s humanitarian leader for the Afghan people, “this’s not something we can do alone.”

He urged other countries to come forward and help Afghanistan, “including countries very nearby, regional countries – that can and should do more for the Afghan people.”

Asked which nearby countries the US would like to do more for Afghanistan, Mr. Price said: “I don’t think it is helpful for the cause of the humanitarian plight of the Afghan people for me specifically to call out countries by name.”

But there were “some perhaps fairly obvious countries in the region that have the ability and the stake in seeing an Afghanistan that is stable and secure,” he added.

Pakistan, ADB sign agreements worth $1.5bn for various projects

Pakistan, ADB sign agreements worth $1.5bn for various projects
The federal government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday signed six agreements amounting to $1.543 billion to finance projects related to the energy sector, urban infrastructure, social protection, roads and water resources, the Ministry of Economic Affairs in a statement.

The agreements were signed by Economic Affairs Division Secretary Mian Asad Hayaud Din and ADB's Country Director Yong Ye in Islamabad. Minister for Economic Affairs Omar Ayub Khan witnessed the signing.

Giving a breakdown of the agreements, the statement said they included a $300m policy-based loan to support financial, technical and governance reforms to strengthen the country's energy sector, $385m to improve urban infrastructure in five cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, $235m to dualise a 222-km Shikarpur-Rajanpur section of the Indus Highway and $603m to strengthen and expand the Ehsaas programme.

In addition, agreements were also signed for two project-readiness facilities — a $5m loan for Kurram Tangi Integrated Water Resources Development Project and a $15m loan for phase two of the KP Cities Improvement Investment Project.

The economic affairs minister "expressed deep appreciation" for the ADB and thanked its president, senior management and board of directors for their "continued and enhanced financial support towards reforming energy sector, improving road networks, enhancing social protection and developing sustainable cities in Pakistan".

Khan said the $385m urban infrastructure project would help the provincial and city governments in KP to improve the liveability of five cities — Abbottabad, Kohat, Mardan, Mingora, and Peshawar — and benefit 3.5m people. Under the project, work would be done on providing water supply, sewerage, solid waste management and green infrastructure, according to the statement.

The loan would also provide institutional support to improve the performance of municipal corporations in the five cities with a focus on gender-friendly services, it added. The project also supported the government's development priorities and Prime Minister Imran Khan's vision of Clean Green Pakistan, the ministry stated.

The ADB would also finance $235m for the second phase of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Corridor Development Investment Programme under which the Shikarpur-Rajanpur section of the Indus Highway would be widened to a four-lane carriageway. The section traverses Sindh and Punjab on the western side of the Indus River via Kandhkot, Kashmore and Rojhan, according to the ministry's statement.

"The dualisation of Indus Highway (N-55) will not only boost local economic activities but also promote intra [and] inter-regional trade and movement of people by improved connectivity and reduced travel time. The section will be equipped with bus shelters, trauma centers and rest areas as well as road safety facilities," the statement quoted the minister as saying.

Regarding the Integrated Social Protection Development Programme, Khan said it would support the government's Ehsaas programme, including social protection and poverty reduction schemes.

"Kurram Tangi Integrated Water Resources Development Project is one of the top priority projects in the erstwhile FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) which includes the construction of a dam with water storage facility, hydropower generation and construction and upgrading of irrigation system covering 140,000 hectares."

The project would help in increasing agricultural production and improving the country's food security situation.

The minister reiterated the federal government's commitment to helping all provinces, as well as, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir in achieving inclusive development and sustainable growth, the statement said.

Speaking on the occasion, ADB Vice President Shixin Chen noted that the government "continued to make progress" in implementing comprehensive economic, fiscal and structural reforms, despite the challenging situation created by the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also appreciated Pakistan's vaccination campaign against the coronavirus. The ADB had earlier this year approved a $500m loan for Pakistan to help it procure Covid-19 vaccines.

Meanwhile, ADB Director General Eugene Zhukov assured that the Bank would continue supporting the government's development projects and it "stands committed to support Pakistan for a green, resilient and sustainable recovery".

"The financial support will strengthen Pakistan's economy and reduce the risk of external economic shocks," ADB Country Director Yong Ye said.

Will not rest until Pakistan beats Australia in Australia: Ramiz Raja

Will not rest until Pakistan beats Australia in Australia: Ramiz Raja
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja Wednesday said he would not "rest" till Pakistan does not become a world-class team and beats Australia at their home turf.

The former Pakistan captain and PCB chairman was addressing a press conference in Karachi with newly-appointed CEO Faisal Hasnain. Raja spoke on a wide range of issues, including the dismal attendance during the recently-held Pakistan-West Indies series, the need for permanent coaches and team selection.

The PCB chairman said that the team was on an impressive trajectory but acknowledged that "more work needs to be done."

"Pakistan has to improve its fielding a lot," he noted. "I have been working at the PCB for the past three months yet it feels like 30 years have passed. I now realise that holidays are a huge blessing."

Raja spoke about his performance so far as the PCB chairman, saying that he raised his voice at the Asian Cricket Council after New Zealand and England withdrew from the Pakistan tour.

"I said during the meeting that if any Asian country is mistreated, everyone should raise their voices against it," he disclosed.

The PCB chairman said that he did not have any "final opinion" when it comes to coaches. "We would be trapped if we roped in coaches for long-term contracts. We need specialists, not coaches," he added.

The former Pakistan cricketer said that it would be better if coaches were employed at the basic level to groom future stars, adding that no decision had been taken to either appoint a local or foreign coach yet.
The PCB chairman spoke about Pakistani leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who was named in the FIR of a minor's rape. Without taking his name, Raja said that the PCB has a "no tolerance policy" in such matters and that an investigation is underway to uncover the truth related to the case.

Ramiz Raja said that the players representing Pakistan are on ambassadorial positions, adding that they have been trained who to pick and socialise with.

He said that the players' salaries have been increased so that they can stay in five-star accommodations where there are no distractions.

"Each player earns Rs50 to 60 lac per month," he disclosed.

However, he stated that the PCB plans to invite scholars to give players lectures on morality.

"We have invited Mustansar Hussain tarrar and Ashfaq Ahmed to talk to players on how to handle fame and [educate them] that making money should not be their focus. We need to work on them more," he added.

Additionally, Chairman PCB, said that the media made headlines on the case prematurely.

"There should be an investigation first. This period should have been a calming period," he observed, calling on the media to play a more responsible role when such incidents occur.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has accepted the apologies of Federal Minister for Railways and PTI leader Azam Swati and Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry in connection with a case in which the two ministers accused the ECP of accepting money from electronic voting system (EVM) manufacturers.

On Wednesday, Azam Swati appeared before the ECP, where he was pardoned and warned to exercise caution in future.

"You have more responsibilities," the ECP stated.

The ECP also questioned the minister on his absence from earlier hearings. "You are a busy man, why didn't you appear in previous hearings?" inquired the ECP.

Swati remarked that he has always advocated for the independence of the ECP.

"All the institutions are yours; it is not appropriate to talk bad about them,” the ECP remarked.

Azam Swati and Fawad Chaudhry were warned by the ECP to exercise caution in future.

Swati expressed gratitude to the ECP for accepting his apology.

He stated that the ECP will make sound judgments regarding EVMs and that the government will support them in order to bolster the ECP.

Barrister Ali Zafar, Azam Swati's lawyer, stated that they have apologised for what occurred in the past and now they must collaborate with the ECP.

JUI winning big in KP local body polls 'unfortunate': Fawad Chaudhry

Fawad Chaudhry
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday said that the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam scoring big in the first phase of local body elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is "unfortunate".

This will spell the country's "downfall" as a party "that is against women's rights and is a supporter of extremist policies when it comes to religion" has won the local body polls, Chaudhry said, while addressing a post-cabinet meeting press conference.

The information minister said it was the country's "misfortune that a party that should have been dismantled", won in the local body polls because of "our mistakes".

“Due to administrative problems, we suffered some set back in the local body elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” Chaudhry maintained, adding the PTI is "the only national (level) party in the country".

He said parties like JUI could not be considered a substitute for the PTI, whereas the PML-N and the PPP "had no place" in national politics.

“Imran Khan is the leader of the federation. It is important for the leadership and workers of the PTI to put aside their differences and strengthen Imran Khan," Chaudhry said.

"Without Imran Khan, Pakistan’s politics would disintegrate," he added.

The Opposition parties, particularly the JUI, have taken an unassailable lead in Khyber Pakhtunkwa's ongoing local body elections, leaving PTI behind, according to unofficial results.

The ruling party could not grab a single mayor seat, winning in only one tehsil in Peshawar out of six tehsils.

Awami National Party's (ANP) Himayatullah has been elected as the mayor in Mardan with 56,458 votes, followed by the JUI's Amanat Shah Haqqani with 49,938 votes, according to unofficial results. JUI's candidates secured the remaining three seats of mayor in Kohat, Bannu, and Peshawar, according to unofficial results.

The results, however, for the election of mayor in Peshawar have been stopped by the Election Commission of Pakistan on account of postponement of polling on some polling stations due to disruption in law and order on election day there.

In response to a question about PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz, the information minister said that she "does not have much of a political standing".

Speaking about former president Asif Ali Zardari's recent speech in Nawabshah where he slammed the government's policies, Chaudhry said: "If they even see the potential of a deal, all of them rush with their polish."

On the economic front, he said indicators show a positive trajectory and economic stability due to the "prudent policies" of the government, Radio Pakistan reported.

The minister said that opportunities for wealth creation are on the rise in the country, with the textile, information technology, agriculture, and other sectors performing well.

He said direct taxes have seen a 31% surge, adding that all the crops have witnessed record production resulting in additional income of Rs1,100 billion to farmers.

Chaudhry said cotton recorded an increase of 19.5%, rice 4.8%, and sugarcane 8.7%.

He said consumption of electricity and diesel grew by 13% and 26% respectively.

Talking about the increase in current expenditure, the minister said it was because of the expenses incurred on procurement of COVID-19 vaccines and payment of Rs134 billion to Independent Power Producers.

OIC, int'l community acknowledge Pakistan's stance on Afghanistan: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan said Tuesday the international community and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have now acknowledged Pakistan's narrative on Afghanistan.

The prime minister, addressing officers of the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad during his visit to the Foreign Office, said the international community should focus on the difficulties being faced by the 40 million Afghans, Radio Pakistan reported.

Pakistan's image has "significantly improved at the international level in the last three years", the prime minister said, two days after Islamabad hosted the 17th extraordinary session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the OIC.

Muslim nations, during the session, resolved to work with the United Nations to try to unlock hundreds of millions of dollars in frozen Afghan assets in a bid to tackle a growing humanitarian crisis.

The prime minister congratulated the Foreign Office for successfully conducting the 17th extraordinary session. He also praised the law enforcement agencies that made the event a success, making the nation proud, with a strong sense of self-belief.

The prime minister, while lauding the nation’s mettle to face different testing times in the country’s history, stressed upon the inculcation of "self-belief", a quality that could serve as a beacon of light in hard times.

The prime minister said it was the self-belief that always entailed changes.

“When you instil self-belief in yourself as a nation, you can achieve marvels. When the earthquake hit the country (during 2005), the whole nation mobilised and during floods (of 2010), the nation contributed, which reflected that the nation could always stand the tests of time,” he added.

The prime minister also referred to his cricket career and the performance of the national cricket team which achieved success when motivated with self-belief.

“The country has a huge talented population of 220 million people along with 9 million overseas Pakistanis who are capable of achieving anything as they have excelled in every field,” he expressed.

“No country aspires progress sans rule of law,” he said, adding certain Western countries had achieved progress and prosperity despite scant resources, as they had introduced a culture of rule of law.

The prime minister also regretted that in the past, the elite had captured spaces as they were "pampered with all facilities".

He underscored that the government would have to focus to lift the poor segments of society and for this purpose, the whole nation would have to continue this struggle.

Citing the current account deficit, the prime minister said it had increased pressure on the rupee. The government had almost overcome the challenge, but the increasing commodity prices at the global level proved as a choking point.

Expressing his resolve, he said, however, it was a temporary phase and the country would overcome it.

“I strongly believe that Pakistan has a great future and the nation will become strong,” he said, recollecting that during the 60s, the nation was following that path.

Philippines typhoon death toll hits 375

Philippines typhoon death toll hits 375
The death toll from the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year surged to 375 on Monday, as desperate survivors pleaded for urgent supplies of drinking water and food.

The Philippine Red Cross reported “complete carnage” in coastal areas after Super Typhoon Rai left homes, hospitals and schools “ripped to shreds”.

The storm tore off roofs, uprooted trees, toppled concrete power poles, smashed wooden houses to pieces, wiped out crops and flooded villages — sparking comparisons to the damage caused by Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.

“Our situation is so desperate,” said Ferry Asuncion, a street vendor in the hard-hit seaside city of Surigao, which was devastated by the storm.

Residents urgently needed “drinking water and food”, he said.

At least 375 people were killed and 56 are missing in the latest disaster to hit the archipelago, with 500 more injured, the national police said.

More than 380,000 people fled their homes and beachfront resorts as Rai slammed into the country on Thursday.

One of the hardest-hit islands was Bohol -- known for its beaches, “Chocolate Hills” and tiny tarsier primates — where at least 94 people have died, provincial Governor Arthur Yap said on Facebook.

Many wooden houses in Bohol’s coastal town of Ubay were flattened and small fishing boats destroyed on the island, where a state of calamity has been declared.

A senior official at the national disaster agency said he had not expected as many deaths.

“I was proven wrong as it appears now coming from the reports,” said Casiano Monilla, deputy administrator for operations.

Rai hit the Philippines late in the typhoon season: most cyclones develop between July and October.

Scientists have long warned that typhoons are becoming more powerful and strengthening more rapidly as the world becomes warmer because of human-driven climate change.

Shoaib Malik is super proud of nephew Muhammad Huraira's first-class triple ton

Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik and Muhammad Huraira
Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik on Tuesday lauded his nephew, Muhammad Huraira, for becoming the second-youngest Pakistani cricketer to score a first-class triple century after veteran cricketer Javed Miandad.

Taking to Twitter, Shoaib Malik said he feels extremely proud of Huraira for this achievement.

Saying that there is still much more for Huraira to achieve, Shoaib Malik wished the young cricketer all the best and advised him never to stop working hard and going strong.

"I am very proud of you @therealhurraira on becoming the second Pakistani young cricketer to score triple century, you have a long way to go. Keep working hard and and keep going strong, all the best," Shoaib wrote on Twitter.

Huraira was ecstatic to receive praise from star cricketer Shoaib Malik.

Pakistan may be about to witness the rise of a new batting talent as 19-year-old Mohammad Huraira reached a milestone on the third day of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match where Northern is playing against Balochistan.

The Sialkot-born top-order batter achieved this feat in his maiden first-class season. He had scored two centuries before this landmark performance.

The triple century by Huraira came in only 327 deliveries making it one of the quickest first-class triple centuries.

The Pakistani youngster is the ninth teenager in the world to smash a triple ton first-class cricket and the second Pakistani after Javed Miandad to score a triple century at 17.

He is also the eighth youngest batter, overall, to achieve this feat.
