Firdous Ashiq Awan maintained that the tenancy law was made by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and it implements equally on all citizens.

She said there are some questions regarding the tenants to whom Irfan Siddiqui rented out his house. It is necessary for the owner to inform the relevant police station while giving the house on rent, she said.

Firdous Ashiq Awan affirmed that Irfan Siddiqui and his family should not be treated unjustly.

Referring to Irfan Siddiqui’s profession, the SAPM said the PTI-led government respects the noble profession of teaching and has no policy of covert actions. It is our mission to make all institutions independent but the process will require some time, she concluded.

Irfan Siddiqui’s arrest

He was produced in the courtroom of Magistrate Mehreen Baloch in Islamabad.

Meanwhile, Mr Siddiqui’s defense counsel pleaded with the court to release his client and termed the charges against him as “false and baseless.”

Section 144 had been imposed in Islamabad, the violation of which has resulted in Mr Siddiqui’s arrest under Section 188 of the Criminal Procedure Code allegedly for not informing the relevant police station about giving his house on rent.

He was arrested by police during a raid on his residence late Friday night and later shifted to the Ramna police station in Islamabad.

Surgeons remove 36 magnetic balls from toddler's stomach

36 magnetic balls
A toddler in China who was rushed to the hospital with severe stomach pain, high fever and a history of vomiting was revealed to have ingested 36 magnetic balls, which had attached to each other while in her digestive tract and caused two holes in her intestine.

The 1-year-old girl, who was not identified  landed at Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in Wenzhou, of the Zhejiang Province in east China, after being transferred from a local clinic.

Dr. Lin Xiaokun ordered an X-ray of her abdomen, and determined that she had swallowed them one by one, so it was not easy to notice for the family.Because of the magnetic power, all the swallowed balls attached and damaged the intestine, Xiaokun said, Especially when balls attached between intestines. It will cause anabrosis in the intestines. That’s why there are two holes in the girl’s intestines.

Pediatricians have long noted the dangers associated with ingesting magnets, so much so that in the U.S., the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards for children products and toys was adjusted in 2008 to ensure that magnets will not fall out or become unattached from children’s products.

According to the American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP), anecdotal reports have shown that magnetic ingestions have led to dozens of surgeries, bowel perforations or fistulas, endoscopies, bowel resections and other serious gastrointestinal injuries.

Parents are advised to keep such products out of reach of children, and to closely monitor loose magnets or magnetic products and contact a pediatrician immediately if they suspect a magnet has been swallowed or inhaled.

Pakistan outlined current challenges faced by UN Peacekeeping

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi
Pakistan outlined current challenges faced by UN Peacekeeping and said inputs from Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) were critical in formulating effective peacekeeping strategies.

Speaking at a well-attended meeting of the Group of Friends of Top Troop and Police Contributing countries that Pakistan co-chairs with Morocco, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Maleeha Lodhi, said all stakeholders must act together to reduce reimbursement gaps currently faced by TCCs.

Urging reduction of deployment time, Ambassador Lodhi said in the United Nations that delays in the deployment of troops cause major challenges and incur heavy costs for the TCCs as they could no longer use and deploy those assets for other national needs.

“The time lag”, Ambassador Lodhi pointed out, “between a country’s offer to contribute an asset and actual deployment can range from a few months to, even a year at times”.

She stressed that as these assets and capabilities were recognized as critical, we must work together to ensure that minimum time is wasted in deployment.

“We owe this to the peacekeepers and those they are mandated to protect”, she added.

Ambassador Lodhi also highlighted the need for peacekeepers to be adequately equipped to enable them to operate effectively in complex environments.

Ambassador Lodhi said, as one of the world’s top troop and police contributors to UN Peacekeeping, Pakistan could share experiences and lessons learnt on generating critical capabilities.

Calling for the need to streamline the process of transportation of assets, she said damages during transportation and unforeseen delays in processing the necessary port clearances created situations where TCCs suffered through no fault of their own.

“While assets are rendered undeployable, compensation processes linger on”, she added.

North Korea says new missile a 'solemn warning' to South

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said two missiles fired under his supervision were newly designed tactical weapons that sent a “solemn warning” to the South over plans to hold military drills with the United States.

Thursday's missile tests were the first since Kim and US President Donald Trump agreed to resume nuclear talks during an impromptu meeting last month in the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea.

That working-level dialogue has yet to begin and, even before Thursday's launches, Pyongyang had warned the talks could be derailed by Washington and Seoul's refusal to scrap joint military exercises scheduled for next month.

North Korean state media provided no technical specifications, but said on Friday the latest tests were of a “new-type tactical guided weapon” that sent a “solemn warning to the South Korean warmongers” over their insistence on holding the joint drills “in defiance of repeated warnings”.

There are close to 30,000 US troops stationed in South Korea and their annual manoeuvres with South Korean soldiers have always infuriated Pyongyang.

South Korean military monitors said the two short-range missiles fired on Thursday flew nearly 450 kilometres and 700 kilometres respectively, before splashing down in the sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan.

That range would allow them to hit any target in South Korea.

Japan's defence minister called the launches “extremely regrettable” while Seoul's National Security Office expressed “strong concern” and the US called for an end to such “provocations”.

'Double-dealing behaviour'

According to state-run KCNA, Kim said the new “state-of-the-art” missiles were capable of low-altitude flight that made them difficult to intercept and cautioned Seoul against “ignoring the warning” implicit in their development.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he believed the working-level talks would still go ahead, and that the latest tests were a negotiating tactic.

“Everybody tries to get ready for negotiations and create leverage and create risk for the other side,” Pompeo said in an interview with Bloomberg Television.

“We remain convinced that there's a diplomatic way forward, a negotiated solution to this,” he said, adding he was unconcerned at the delay in getting back to the table.

“If it takes another two weeks or four weeks, so be it,” he said.

Pyongyang carried out similar short-range launches in May, which Trump dismissed at the time as “very standard stuff” — an assessment he repeated after the latest tests on Thursday.

“They really haven't tested missiles other than smaller ones, which is something that lots test,” the president said in an interview with Fox News.

Thursday's launches came a day after US National Security Advisor John Bolton — an arch-hawk regularly vilified by North Korean state media — spoke with senior South Korean officials in Seoul.

Mohammad Amir announces retirement from Test cricket

Mohammad Amir
Mohammad Amir on Friday announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect, but reaffirmed his commitment to playing white ball cricket for Pakistan.

In a statement shared by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Amir said: “It has been an honour to represent Pakistan in the pinnacle and traditional format of the game. I, however, have decided to move away from the longer version so I can concentrate on white ball cricket."

The cricketer also shared a video on YouTube in which he explained his decision to the fans and cited the five-year gap in playing cricket due to the ban for spot-fixing as the main reason.

“Playing for Pakistan remains my ultimate desire and objective, and I will try my best to be in the best physical shape to contribute in the team’s upcoming challenges, including next year’s ICC T20 World Cup," said the fast bowler — who earned praise for his performance in the recently concluded ICC World Cup 2019 — in the statement.

The 27-year-old cricketer shared that he was considering retirement from the format "for some time", adding that it "has not been an easy decision to make".

"But with the ICC World Test Championship commencing shortly, and Pakistan boasting some very exciting young fast bowlers, it is appropriate that I call on my time in Test cricket so that the selectors can plan accordingly.

{youtube}qIzlyrvJ6g8{/youtube}

“I want to thank all my team-mates as well the opponents in red ball cricket. It has been a privilege to play with and against them. I am sure our paths will continue to cross in limited-overs cricket as all of us play and compete with the same vigour and determination."

Amir also thanked the PCB for providing him "the opportunity to don the golden star on my chest".

"I am grateful to my coaches who have groomed me at various stages of my career,” said the bowler.

Amir made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in Galle in July 2009. He featured in 36 Tests, taking 119 wickets at an average of 30.47. His best bowling returns — six for 44 — were against the West Indies in Kingston in April 2017.

In a statement issued by the board, PCB Managing Director Wasim Khan said: “Amir has been one of the most exciting and talented left-arm fast bowlers in Test cricket in recent times. He overcame adversity as a young cricketer and came back stronger not only as a cricketer but also as a better human being.

"His skill, on the field, and his personality will be missed in the dressing room in the longer format. However, we respect his decision and look forward to him continuing to play an integral role in white ball cricket for Pakistan.”

Heart problems participating in cognitive decline

Heart Attack
Adults with clogged arteries carrying blood to the heart may be more prone to cognitive decline than their counterparts without such cardiac problems, a study suggests.

This was true whether patients had suffered a heart attack or they had angina, which is the term for chest pains caused by reduced blood flow to the heart.

For about 12 years, researchers followed 7,888 adults, starting when they were 62 years old on average. At the start, none of them had a history of stroke, heart attack, angina, or dementia.

By the end of the study, 480 people, or 5.6% of the participants, had a heart attack or developed angina.

Before these events, and immediately afterward, these patients had similar annual rates of cognitive decline as participants who didn’t have a heart attack or angina, researchers report in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

But as more time passed after a heart attack or angina diagnosis, patients experienced more rapid cognitive decline than participants who didn’t have these heart issues. And heart attack and angina patients also had faster declines in verbal skills, word fluency, and critical skills like telling time.

“Even a slight acceleration in cognitive decline might speed up cognitive aging which might eventually translate into problems in activities of daily living, and finally, to a cause even need for institutional care,” said Suvi Rovio of the University of Turku in Finland.

“Therefore, the patients who have suffered a cardiovascular event should be monitored for their cognitive function not only acutely after the event, but the monitoring should be done frequently and to be extended to cover a longer time period after the event,” Rovio, coauthor of an editorial accompanying the study.

During the study, researchers assessed participants’ cognitive function in eight waves over up to 12 years.

To test verbal memory, they asked participants to recall 10 unrelated words. They also asked participants to name as many different animals as possible in one minute, to test semantic fluency. Third, they asked people questions regarding the date, month, year and day of the week.

Participants who experienced a heart attack or angina showed faster rates of cognitive decline in all 3 tests.

Patients with angina showed a robust decline in cognitive skills related to time, whereas heart attack patients had significant cognitive decline in verbal memory and word fluency, and worse overall cognitive decline.

“Even small differences in cognitive function can result in an increased risk of dementia in the long-term,” said Wuxiang Xie, of the Imperial College School of Public Health in London and lead author of the study.

“Because there is no current cure for dementia, early detection and intervention are essential to delay the progression to dementia,” Xie said in a statement.

The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how a heart attack or angina might directly cause cognitive decline or accelerate this process. It’s possible that coronary heart disease might cause cognitive decline due to the lack of oxygen to the brain, the study team write.

One limitation of the study is that it relied on participants to report any diagnosis of angina or heart attack. Researchers also measured cognitive function using isolated tasks, and people might have impairments that went undetected.

Even so, the findings suggest that patients with heart problems need to be extra careful to make lifestyle changes to minimize their risk of cognitive decline or dementia in the future, Rovio said.

“This means that it is important for the patients for example to control their blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as to adopt a healthy diet, be physically active, and avoid smoking and excess alcohol drinking.” Rovio advised. “What is known to be good for your heart is also good for your brain.”

Saudi Arabia to expand pipeline to reduce oil exports

Khalid al-Falih
Saudi Arabia aims to raise the capacity of its east-west pipeline by 40% in two years so more of its oil exports can avoid passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the energy minister said on Thursday.

Khalid al-Falih also told Reuters that importers should, as a first immediate step, secure shipments through the strategic waterway at the mouth of Gulf, after attacks on oil tankers in the area and the seizure of a British-flagged ship by Iran.

Falih said the international community should take swift action to protect oil supplies and secure the Strait, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes.

Oil importers “have to do what they have to do to protect their own energy shipments because Saudi Arabia cannot take that on its own,” he said in an interview during a visit to India.

The United States, which has imposed economic sanctions on Iran to halt its exports of oil, is trying to rally support for a global coalition to secure Gulf waters. Britain has called for a European-led naval mission to protect shipping.

“India also needs to do its part in securing free navigation of sea links transporting energy to the rest of the world,” Falih said after meeting Indian Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

India has deployed two warships in the Strait.

Saudi Arabia already exports some of its oil through the Red Sea using a 1200-km (750-mile) pipeline that runs from the east of the kingdom, where much of its oil production is based, to the Red Sea port city of Yanbu in the west.

Saudi Arabia aimed to maximise exports through the 5 million barrels per day (bpd) east-west pipeline if required, he said.

“We are hoping to increase it to 7 (million bpd),” Falih said, although he said expanding capacity of the east-west pipeline, called Petroline, would take two years.

Routing oil supplies away from the Strait is more difficult for countries like Kuwait and Iraq, whose only coastline is on the Gulf, or the United Arab Emirates and Iran, which have major oil export terminals on the Gulf.

But exporters are looking at alternatives, such as Iraq which plans to export more oil to Turkey’s port of Ceyhan and to build new pipelines to ports in Syria, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.

In his talks in India, Falih said Saudi Arabia was prepared to supply additional oil to India.

He also said state-run Saudi Aramco’s talks about buying a minority stake in the refining assets of India’s Reliance Industries had not stalled, after sources told Reuters this week they had hit a roadblock.

On Saudi plans to list Aramco, Falih said the kingdom was “absolutely ready” for launching an initial public offering, adding that the share sale was “possible” next year depending on global economic and financial conditions.

The minister said global oil demand was reasonably healthy but was lower than estimates had put it at the start of 2019.

The International Energy Agency is revising down its 2019 global oil demand growth forecast to 1.1 million bpd and may cut it again if the global economy slows further amid a U.S.-China trade spat.

“I am not concerned at all,” Falih said, adding that the U.S.-China trade row was not “impacting demand to a measurable degree” as Asia oil demand was healthy.

Three bombs kill 15 in Afghan capital as US general visits

Kabul Blasts
Three bombs rocked the Afghan capital of Kabul on Thursday, killing at least 15 people, officials said, as the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff was meeting top US and NATO officials in the city.

Eight employees of the ministry of mines and petroleum were killed and 27 wounded in an attack on their bus, ministry officials said in a statement. Five women and a child were among the dead.

Minutes after the blast, a suicide bomber blew himself up a few meters away, killing at least seven people and wounding 20.

“First a magnetic bomb pasted to a minibus exploded, then a suicide bomber blew himself near the bus attack site and the third blast happened when a car was blown up by unknown militants,” said Nasrat Rahimi, a spokesman of the interior ministry in Kabul.

“The death toll could rise from all the three blasts,” he said.

The Taliban, after their 2001 ouster at the hands of US-led troops, claimed responsibility for the car bomb alone.

Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said nine foreign forces were killed and two vehicles destroyed, but government officials did not confirm the Taliban claim.

US Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Marine General Joseph Dunford also met US peace envoy for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, who is leading talks with Taliban militants to end the 18-year-long war.

The United States is trying to negotiate a deal that would see foreign forces pull out of Afghanistan in return for security guarantees by Taliban militants, including a pledge that the country will not become a safe haven for terror groups.

Afghan security experts said the insurgents were increasing attacks to gain greater leverage in the peace talks. The eighth round is expected to begin this month in Qatar.

The Taliban also clashed with Afghan forces in northern province of Takhar to secure control over checkpoints and capture several districts. Both sides said that they have inflicted heavy damage on their opponents.

In the eastern province of Nangarhar, a roadside bomb hit a wedding party on Thursday. Six women and three children were killed in the blast in Khogyani district, the provincial governor’s office said in a statement.

No group has claimed responsibility for that attack.

Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav would be granted consular access: Foreign Office

Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal
Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Mohammad Faisal told reporters during a news conference on Thursday that India was not willing for dialogue. Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav would be granted consular access and the process for this was already underway.

“Pakistan and India have no other option but dialogue,” said Faisal.

While on his visit to the US, Prime Minister Imran Khan in an interview with Fox News said Pakistan would be willing to give up its nuclear weapons if India did the same.

“Nuclear war is not an option between Pakistan and India. The idea of nuclear war is actually self-destruction,” said the prime minister.

The spokesperson confirmed that Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav would be granted consular access and the process for this was already underway.

Earlier this month, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) found that India’s submission pertaining to the acquittal and release of Kulbhushan Jadhav could not be upheld. In its decision, ICJ allowed India consular access to Jadhav and called on Pakistan to review and reconsider his conviction and sentence.

Speaking on Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to the US, the spokesperson told reporters that relations with Washington had started afresh.

“There was no mention of do more during the US visit,’ he added.

During his visit to the US, Prime Minister Imran Khan met with President Donald Trump. The US president offered to mediate the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan. The two leaders also held discussions on the situation in Afghanistan.

Iran defends seizure of British tanker in letter to UN Security Council

Iran defends seizure of British tanker in letter to UN Security Council
Iran has defended its move in capturing a British tanker in the Persian Gulf, saying that the vessel was impounded after it breached international law by attempting to flee the scene of a dangerous collision with an Iranian boat.

In the letter on Wednesday, Iran told the United Nations Security Council that the British tanker "Stena Impero" collided with a small fishing boat on July 19, and badly injured its crew -- some of whom remain in critical condition.

Afterwards, instead of responding to distress calls from the boat and radio communications from Iranian authorities, the British tanker turned off its transponder and "dangerously" changed course in the direction of incoming ships, the letter read.

That is when, according to the letter, Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) intervened and took the ship and its crew into custody.

Tehran asserted in the letter that the seizure, which took place in accordance with international regulations, was necessary for protecting the safety and the order of maritime navigation at the Strait of Hormuz strategic choke point.

According to the letter, Iranian judicial authorities had ordered local officials to investigate the tanker's violations, including its environmental damage as well as the extent of the damage it has done to the fishing boat and its crew.

The letter also rejected claims by the UK government in a recent letter to the UNSC, where it had claimed the IRGC forces acted illegally by approaching the Stena Impero in " Omani territorial waters."

Meanwhile, Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan , a top military advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, warned the UK about the possible ramifications of its calls for a European force to escort tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

"The UK's proposal for a European force in the Strait of Hormuz could lead to unpredictable consequences [for London]," General Dehqan told Al jazeera on Wednesday. "Our equation in the Strait of Hormuz is that either everyone enjoys full security or no one does."

Tensions between Iran and the UK began earlier this month, when British naval forces seized an Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar under the pretext that it was carrying oil to Syria in violation of European Union sanctions against the Arab country. Iran has denied the claim.

Europe heatwave expected to peak and break records again

Western Europe is expected to face record-breaking temperatures
Much of Western Europe is expected to face record-breaking temperatures again, with its second heatwave in a month set to reach its peak.

A red alert has been issued in Northern France  with temperatures of 41C forecast in Paris. The UK is expecting 39C heat and trains have been ordered to run more slowly to stop rail tracks buckling in the heat.

Belgium, German and Dutch temperature records could be broken for the second time in two days. The UK's national weather service said that climate change has increased the likelihood and severity of heatwave episodes across Europe.

On Wednesday, a Eurostar train from Belgium to London broke down, trapping passengers, while French reports suggested five deaths might have been linked to the heatwave.

Authorities launched a red alert - the highest state of alert - in the Paris region and 19 other French departments, calling for "absolute vigilance", and comparisons were drawn to a heatwave in August 2003, which contributed to almost 15,000 deaths.Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands had already recorded their highest-ever temperatures on Wednesday of 39.9C, 40.5C and 39.3C respectively.

But forecasters believe the mercury could soar even higher on Thursday, and the Netherlands could see a new record of 40C in the south-east.Yes, an intense heatwave swept through areas of Europe last month, making it the hottest June on record.

While extreme weather events like heatwaves occur naturally, UK's Met Office says that research shows that with climate change they are likely to become more common, perhaps occurring as regularly as every other year.

It conducted a study last year that found that the UK was now 30 times more likely to experience heatwaves compared to the year 1750, because of the higher concentration of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) in the atmosphere.

A climatology institute in Potsdam, Germany, says Europe's five hottest summers since 1500 have all been in the 21st Century.Scientists are concerned that rapid warming linked to use of fossil fuels has serious implications for the stability of the planet's climate.

12-year-old Fatiha Abdullahi created a cheap robot

Fatiha Abdullahi from Nigeria created a cheap robot
12-year-old Fatiha Abdullahi from Nigeria has only been acquainted with coding for a few years now, but she has already managed to put her knowledge to practical use.

She created a cheap robot to make daily chores easier by programming it to fold clothes at a quick pace. All you have to do is put the clothes on its panels and it will fold it automatically within 3 seconds.

The 12-year-old’s robot is still only a prototype but she plans to work on it and sell in Nigeria’s markets. She aims to make other people’s lives easier with her creation.

CES saw a similar machine called Foldimate, which also allows people to fold their clothes quickly. However, it doesn’t match Abdullahi’s folding robot as the former takes five seconds to fold, is not capable of folding really small or large clothes, and is quite costly with the price going up to $1000.
