Entrance test for medical colleges being held across Sindh

File photo of students taking a test.
An entrance test for medical colleges is being held as per the uniform admission policy across Sindh today (Sunday).

The admission test is being held in Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana and Sukkur among other cities.

Last night it was reported that the entrance test had been leaked and was being sold in Dadu, Hyderabad and Larkana.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had taken several into custody for allegedly leaking the paper.

However, National Testing Service (NTS) head Syed Masood Hussain Rizvi said reports regarding the test leaking have been doing the rounds for a week. “The paper that was being distributed is old,” he added.

Further, Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) Vice Chancellor Dr Tariq Rafi said, “It is the responsibility of NTS to prepare and transport the tests to centres.”

Last month, Dr Rafi had announced that for the first time in the history of medical and dental colleges in the province, students will be given admission through a uniform policy.

Addressing a press conference at the JSMU in Karachi on September 28, Dr Rafi had said, “Only Sindh domicile holders are eligible for admission in public medical institutions while domicile holders belonging to other provinces are eligible to apply in private medical colleges and universities.”

Dr Rafi had further said, “Only one entry test will be conducted for public and private medical colleges and universities.”

In the new admission policy, some changes have also been made to the quota of foreign students. Previously, students who did O and A levels were eligible for admission on seats reserved for foreign students but the new policy states that foreign national students should have acquired education from their respective host country in the last two years before applying.

Sri Lanka president suspends parliament amid crisis

Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena
Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena on Saturday suspended parliament, deepening political turmoil after he sacked the country’s prime minister.

Parliamentary officials said the president had suspended all meetings of the 225-member house until November 16.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was sacked by the president late Friday, had earlier called for an emergency session of parliament so he could prove his majority.

The parliament had been due to meet again on November 5 to unveil the 2019 annual budget.

The suspension could destabilise government finances at a time when the country faces an economic crisis.

In a statement, Parliamentary Speaker Karu Jayasuriya called for calm and restraint and for the crisis to be resolved quickly.

European diplomats in Colombo said they were closely following developments and urged both sides to act in line with the constitution, echoing comments made by the United States.

"The ambassador of the European Union as well as the ambassadors of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and the UK High Commissioner ... urge all parties to fully act in accordance with Sri Lanka’s constitution," they said.

They also urged the rivals to refrain from violence and respect media freedom.

Reports have said supporters of former strongman president Mahinda Rajapakse stormed several state media institutions and intimidated staff after he was sworn in as the new prime minister on Friday night.

Kohli's third straight ton in vain as West Indies level series

Kohli's third straight ton in vain as West Indies level series
India captain Virat Kohli struck his third consecutive hundred but it was not enough as West Indies defeated the hosts by 43 runs in the third one-day international on Saturday to square the five-match series at 1-1.

Milestone man Kohli, who became the fastest batsman to reach 10,000 ODI runs during Wednesday’s tied match at Visakhapatnam, compiled 107 to bring up his 38th century in the format but his dismissal ended India’s hopes of chasing down 284 for victory.

Part-time off-spinner Marlon Samuels emerged as wrecker-in-chief for the Caribbean side, picking up his best ODI bowling figures of three for 12 as India were all out for 240 in the 48th over.

West Indies batsman Shai Hope, who, like Kohli, also bats at number three, continued his rich vein of form, following up his unbeaten 123 in the last match with 95 to anchor the innings and help his side to 283 for nine after being asked to bat first.

With Kohli in irrepressible form, India appeared to be comfortably placed at 172 for three after 31 overs but lost their way with the quick wickets of Rishabh Pant, who made 24 off 18 balls, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Kohli still looked like a man on a mission — evident from his muted celebration after reaching his hundred — but once he got castled in Samuels’ first over, the fate of the match was sealed.

The right-handed batsman, who will turn 30 next month, hit 10 fours and one six in his 119-ball knock.

Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah - one of the three fast bowlers the hosts drafted in for the match - was the pick of the Indian attack with four for 35, and his early strikes threw the West Indies’ innings into disarray.

Opener Chandrapaul Hemraj fell to a sensational catch by India’s 37-year-old wickekeeper Dhoni, who ran towards the fine-leg boundary and completed a full-length diving catch after the batsman had miscued a pull shot off Bumrah.

Rohit Sharma then took a sharp catch at first slip to send back the other opener, Kieran Powell, and once fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Samuels cheaply, West Indies were reduced to 55 for three.

Hope, who hit six fours and three sixes in his 113-ball knock, and the swashbuckling Shimron Hetmyer (37) then added a quickfire 56 before Dhoni completed a smart stumping to dismiss the latter off-spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

Hetmyer hit two fours and three sixes in his 21-ball knock after scores of 106 and 94 in the two previous ODIs.

Bumrah produced a superb inswinging yorker to dismiss Hope, reducing West Indies to 227-8 and boosting India’s hopes of restricting their opponents to a modest total.

But the West Indies were boosted by tailenders Ashley Nurse and Kemar Roach, who added another 56 runs off 36 balls to take their side past 280.

Nurse hit four boundaries and two sixes in his 22-ball 40 before becoming Bumrah’s fourth victim. The penultimate ODI will be played in Mumbai on Monday.

Synagogue gunman kills 11 in America's worst anti-Semitic attack

Synagogue gunman kills 11 in America's worst anti-Semitic attack
A gunman faces 29 federal charges of violent crimes after he opened fire during a baby-naming ceremony at a synagogue in the US city of Pittsburgh on Saturday, killing 11 people and injuring six in the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in recent US history.

The shooter — identified as a 46-year-old local resident named Robert Bowers — reportedly yelled "All Jews must die" as he burst into the Tree of Life synagogue, where dozens of congregants were gathered in the morning for Sabbath services.

Taken into custody after a firefight with police, the suspect was transferred to hospital.

US prosecutors later Saturday charged him with 29 counts of federal crimes of violence and firearms offenses, including 11 counts of using a firearm to commit murder and 11 counts of obstructing the exercise of religion resulting in death.

"The crimes of violence are based upon the federal civil rights laws prohibiting hate crimes," the statement said. Authorities had said earlier Bowers' charges could carry the death penalty.

Striking an unusually somber tone, President Donald Trump denounced "a wicked act of mass murder," while his daughter Ivanka, a convert to Judaism, declared: "America is stronger than the acts of a depraved bigot and anti-Semite."

"This evil Anti-Semitic attack is an assault on all of us," Trump told supporters at an election rally in Illinois where he began by addressing the attack at length — drawing loud cheers as he vowed to fully enforce the death penalty for such crimes.

"We must stand with our Jewish brothers and sisters to defeat anti-Semitism and vanquish the forces of hate."

Trump said he would soon travel to the stricken Pennsylvania city where hundreds of residents gathered late Saturday for a candlelit vigil.

The president also ordered all flags at the White House and at public grounds, military posts and naval stations to be flown at half-staff through October 31 as a mark of "solemn respect" for the victims.

Stephen Weiss, a 60-year-old member of the congregation, described hearing dozens of shots coming from the synagogue's front lobby.

"We had services going on in the chapel when we heard a loud noise," he told the Tribune-Review newspaper. "I recognized it as gunshots."

Authorities said Bowers was armed with an assault rifle and at least three handguns when he launched his attack shortly before 10:00 am (1400 GMT) — leaving a scene described as "horrific" by Wendell Hissrich, Pittsburgh's public safety director.

"One of the worst that I've seen. I've been on plane crashes," said Hissrich, who confirmed that 11 people were killed, and six injured -- not including the gunman. No children were among the casualties.

'Our hearts break'

The Pittsburgh attack comes with the United States witnessing a sharp spike in anti-Semitic incidents, having surged 57 per cent from 2016 to 2017, to 1,986 from 1,267, according to the Anti-Defamation League, a civil rights group which has tracked anti-Semitism in the United States since the 1970s.

The ADL said it believes the Pittsburgh shooting to be the deadliest such attack in US history.

"Our hearts break for the victims, their families, and the entire Jewish community," said the group's head Jonathan Greenblatt.

Bowers, who the FBI said was not previously known to law enforcement, appeared to be the author of a rash of anti-Semitic online posts, notably on the Gab.com website, where conspiracy theories are common.

A quote atop the Bowers page said "Jews are the children of satan," according to screenshots of the now-suspended account released by the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors extremist movements.

Saturday's attack also comes at a time of heightened national tensions — a day after a Trump fan from Florida was arrested for mailing explosive devices to a series of Democratic figures, setting the country on edge ahead of close-fought elections on November 6.

Trump — who has been accused of fueling hate with divisive rhetoric — briefly considered scrapping his Illinois campaign rally on Saturday, but finally decided to maintain it.

"We can't let evil change our lives," he said — although he later promised to change his "tone" in light of the attack.

'We all have to stand up'

The attack drew swift condemnation and messages of solidarity from world leaders, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring himself "heartbroken and appalled."

"We stand together with the American people in the face of this horrendous anti-Semitic brutality," Netanyahu said in a video message.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel slammed an act of "blind anti-Semitic hatred," saying: "We all have to stand up against anti-Semitism, everywhere."

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres likewise called for a united front "to roll back the forces of racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and other forms of hatred, bigotry, discrimination and xenophobia gaining strength in many parts of the world."

French President Emmanuel Macron "strongly condemned" the attack while Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered solidarity with the victims.

The Tree of Life Synagogue, whose congregation was founded more than 150 years ago, is located in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood that is historically the heart of Jewish life in greater Pittsburgh.

A study last from Brandeis University found that more than 80 per cent of neighborhood residents said they were concerned about rising anti-Semitism.

Shahrukh Jatoi shifted to death cell following orders of Chief Justice

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar
Shahrukh Jatoi was shifted to the death cell at the Central Jail on Saturday following orders by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar to concerned authorities.

Jatoi, along with Siraj Talpur and others, is a convict in the Shahzeb Khan murder case.

The chief justice paid a visit to Landhi Jail earlier today, where he reviewed the arrangements and listened to the prisoners.

When he saw Jatoi’s prison room, the chief justice was annoyed at the C-Class facility available to him and questioned how someone convicted in a murder case could be allowed such facilities.

CJP Nisar ordered the prison authorities to transfer Jatoi to the death cell, and summoned a report from the IG Prisons.

An anti-terrorism court in 2013 had awarded death sentences to Jatoi and Siraj Talpur for the murder of Shahzeb, while life sentences were awarded to Sajjad Ali Talpur and Ghulam Murtaza Lashari.

Shahzeb was gunned down by Jatoi in a posh locality of Karachi on December 25, 2012.

The Sindh High Court later set aside the punishments awarded to the accused by the anti-terrorism court and ordered a retrial of the case in a sessions court.

The Supreme Court earlier this year took a sou motu action and nullified the SHC order.

Germany: Thousands evacuated over theme park bomb threat

Germany: Thousands evacuated over theme park bomb threat
Police say a bomb threat that forced the evacuation of a theme park in western Germany was a false alarm. A Halloween-themed event attended by thousands of people was disrupted.

An amusement park near the German city of Bottrop was evacuated on Friday evening due to an alleged bomb threat.

Some 11,000 people had to leave the Movie Park Germany premises, located in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, following what turned out to be a false alarm.

Movie Park is a seasonal amusement park that centers on famous films.

Halloween event disturbed

On Friday, the park was celebrating a multi-day Halloween special, which included horror movie screenings, haunted houses, music entertainment, rides and a children's Halloween section.

At 5:15 p.m. local time (1515 UTC), the park received a call from an unknown individual warning about a bomb.

Police arrived at the scene and after clearing several of the rides, eventually had to empty out the entire park.

Authorities said visitors exited the premises calmly and without incident. They've now launched an investigation.

In a post on its Facebook page, Movie Park said the safety of its customers was a top priority and thanked them for heeding the evacuation warning, adding that they could still use their tickets on any of the remaining days.

Private dispute?

Authorities said that the bomb call almost certainly followed a dispute between visitors, and was meant to spoil the festivities.

Police did not provide too many details on the caller.

The park said it would open as usual on Saturday and that its Halloween-themed activities would continue as usual.

Namar Majeed—who was on initial bail—was summoned by the court to record statement in the case.

As the hearing went underway, CJP Justice Saqib Nisar made it overtly clear that the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) will look after matters of the Omni Group, a conglomerate allegedly involved in money-laundering worth billions.

CJP also barred banking court from issuing any verdict in the case as the hearing of the same was underway in top court.

Migrant caravan members refuse Mexico's offer of temporary asylum

Migrant caravan members refuse Mexico's offer of temporary asylum
A group of migrants traveling from Central America say they'll continue towards the US border after turning down Mexico's offer of refuge. Washington has reportedly authorized the deployment of troops to the border.

Several thousand migrants — traveling in a large group from Central American countries to the United States — have turned down an offer by Mexico to help them find shelter and work in the country, The Associated Press (AP) reported on Saturday.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto announced that his government would offer support to those people from the so-called migrant caravan who agree to apply for asylum in Mexico.

Pena Nieto spoke directly to migrants in a video address about the plan. "We know very well that what you're seeking is an opportunity, you want to build a new home and a better future for your family and loved ones. Today, Mexico lends you a hand," he said.

The plan dubbed "You are at home," would grant migrants a temporary residence permit while their asylum applications are processed. They would also be eligible to receive medical care, obtain a temporary job permit and enroll their children in school.

The AP reported that the migrants held a vote on the offer near the southern Mexican town of Arriaga, but decided to proceed with their journey to the US border.

"Thank you!" they yelled as they rejected the offer in a show of hands, before adding: "No, we're heading north!"

The migrants are still 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from the nearest U.S. border crossing at McAllen, Texas.

US authorizes military

US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, has warned that the migrants pose a threat to the US, saying that "criminals and unknown Middle Easterners" were "mixed in" with the crowd. Trump has railed against Central American governments for not doing enough to stop the caravan and cited the incident as a reason for tightening immigration laws in the US.

On Friday, US officials told the Reuters news agency that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had authorized the use of troops and other military resources at the US-Mexico border. While the Pentagon did not comment on the matter, officials told Reuters that some 800 troops could be deployed as early as Tuesday.

Mattis is said to have authorized the army to provide "mission-enhancing capabilities" to US Customs and Border Protection, including engineering support to help build temporary barriers and housing.

'Everything is on the table'

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said on Friday that "everything is on the table" to deal with the problem of illegal immigration.

"We are looking at every possible way within the legal construct that we have to make sure that those who don't have the legal right to come to this country do not come in," Nielsen said.

Nielsen's made the remarks during a visit to the first completed section of President Donald Trump's 30-foot border wall in the El Centro Sector, California.

Fleeing violence and poverty

According to organizers, some 5,500 men, women and children are taking part in the migrant caravan, while authorities put the number at 3,630.

The caravan began in Honduras nearly two weeks ago and other Central Americans have joined it along the way. The caravan is comprised mostly of Hondurans, but Guatemalans and El Salvadorians are said to be taking part.

Both Honduras and El Salvador have been plagued by rampant violence, while a lack of jobs has driven many Guatemalans to flee their country. Though Guatemala is Central America's largest economy, some 60 percent of Guatemalans live in poverty.

Yemeni forces shoot down Saudi reconnaissance drone in Jizan

This file picture shows the wreckage of a reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle shot down by Yemeni forces in an unidentified location in Yemen.
Yemeni army forces, supported by allied fighters from Popular Committees, have intercepted and targeted an unmanned aerial vehicle, belonging to the Saudi-led military coalition, as it was flying in the skies over the kingdom’s southwestern border region of Jizan.

An unnamed Yemen military source told Yemen’s Arabic-language al-Masirah television network that Yemeni air defense forces and their allies shot down the drone as it was on a reconnaissance mission over Hariqah area in the Wadi Jarrah district of the province, located 969 kilometers south of the capital Riyadh, on Friday evening.

Separately, Yemeni army forces and Popular Committees fighters fired three domestically-developed Zelzal-1 (Earthquake-1) ballistic missiles at a position of Saudi troops and Yemeni militiamen loyal to former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in the al-Khobe area of Jizan region, leaving a number of them killed and injured.

A bulldozer belonging to Saudi coalition was also destroyed after a barrage of Yemeni artillery rounds slammed into the strategic Jabal al-Doud military base in the same Saudi region.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating military campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the aim of bringing the government of Hadi back to power and crushing the country’s popular Houthi Ansarullah movement.

The Legal Center for Rights and Developments in Yemen, in a statement released on October 15, announced that the ongoing Saudi coalition military campaign against the impoverished and conflict-plagued Arab country has resulted in the death of 15,185 civilians, including 3,527 children and 2,277 women.

A total of 23,822 civilians, among them 3,526 children and 2,587 women, have also sustained injuries, and are currently suffering from the lack of medicine, medical supplies and poor treatment due to the crippling siege.

The center highlighted that aerial assaults being conducted by the saudi coalition military alliance have resulted in the destruction of 15 airports and 14 ports, and damaged 2,559 roads and bridges in addition to 781 water storage facilities, 191 power stations and 426 telecommunications towers.

The statement went on to say that the incessant bombardment campaign has destroyed more than 421,911 houses, 930 mosques, 888 schools, 327 hospitals and health facilities plus 38 media organizations, halted the operation of 4,500 schools and left more than 4 million people internally displaced.

In addition, the Saudi coalition has targeted 1,818 government facilities, 749 food storehouses, 621 food trucks, 628 shops and commercial compounds, 362 fuel stations, 265 tankers, 339 factories, 310 poultry and livestock farms, 219 archaeological sites, 279 tourist facilities and 112 playgrounds and sports complexes.

Microsoft overtakes Amazon as second most valuable US company

Microsoft
Microsoft regained its spot as the second most valuable US company on Friday after a disappointing quarterly report from Amazon.com wiped $65 billion off the online retailer’s market capitalization.

Apple tops the list at over $1 trillion after crossing that threshold in September. Microsoft’s market capitalization was Wall Street’s highest in late 1998 through early 2000 before the dot-com bubble burst.

Amazon’s shares dropped 7 per cent, the most in nearly three years after its holiday season sales outlook missed targets, fanning concerns that Wall Street’s tech darlings are finally starting to face stronger competition.

Microsoft fell a more modest 1.1 per cent in a broad technology sell-off that was also driven by a weaker-than-expected report from Google-parent Alphabet, leaving the Nasdaq composite index. IXIC down 1.9 per cent late Friday afternoon.

Shares of Microsoft remain up nearly 4 per cent from Wednesday, when the four-decade-old software company beat quarterly profit expectations, driven by its cloud computing business that competes with Amazon’s.

Its stock market value on Friday stood at $823 billion, on track to close above Amazon’s for the first time since April, when it gave up its spot as second largest company by market capitalization.

Amazon was worth $805 billion on Friday, after falling below Microsoft’s in extended trade on Thursday. The drop was equivalent to the combined values of Target and Corning.

Amazon’s tumble left it up around 40 per cent year to date, while Microsoft has gained about 25 per cent in 2018. On Wednesday, Amazon’s stock traded at the equivalent of 70 times expected earnings, its lowest level since 2011.

The average analyst price target for Microsoft puts its market cap at $963 billion, while the average price target for Amazon values it at $1.068 trillion.

Apple will report quarterly results on November 1.

Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Emmanuel Macron clash over Saudi weapons

Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Emmanuel Macron clash over Saudi weapons
Merkel wants to halt all arms exports to Saudi Arabia pending the investigation of the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. Macron says such calls are "pure demagoguery."

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel clashed on Friday over the future of arms exports to Saudi Arabia.

Merkel reiterated that Germany would not supply weapons to the key arms buyer until the facts behind the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey were clear.

"The case of journalist Khashoggi is, of course, something incredible, I told the Saudi king yesterday in our telephone conversation," Merkel said at a press conference with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis.

"We need to clarify the background of this horrible crime and until then, we will not supply weapons to Saudi Arabia."

She also called on Riyadh to "do everything to solve the urgent humanitarian situation in Yemen, there are currently millions of hungry people, we are witnesses of one of the greatest humanitarian catastrophes."

Demagoguery

Macron criticized Merkel's stance on weapons exports as "pure demagoguery."

The sale of weapons "has nothing to do with Mr. Khashoggi. One shouldn't mix everything up," he said.

"I greatly admire those who, even before they know anything, say 'We won't sell any more weapons!' They sometimes sell more than France thanks to their joint ventures."

Threats on jets

German news weekly Der Spiegel reported on Friday that France had threatened to cancel a Franco-German fighter jet project unless it was allowed unlimited exports of the warplanes, even to countries involved in conflicts.

The report cited a confidential cable sent to the German ambassador in Paris.

Calls for unity

Macron and Merkel were both in Prague for the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the former nation of Czechoslovakia. They used the opportunity to discuss the future of the European Union and call for cohesion.

In an interview with local media, Macron spoke out against divisions between old and new EU member states in Eastern Europe. He said the Czech Republic and Slovakia — the two states that emerged after the demise of Czechoslovakia — as well as Poland and Hungary should aim for solidarity in regard to European integration.

As well as a common eurozone budget, Macron wants closer fusion on issues such as tax and environmental protection.

Merkel spoke similarly of cohesion: "I would support that we can't always wait for all 28 member states ... to participate."

She also acknowledged that Nazi Germany temporarily destroyed Czechoslovakia during World War II. "After the terrible history ... today we can be very happy that we live together in friendship and good cooperation."

She and Prime Minister Babis discussed the digitalization of industry, transport links and financial aid for African states linked to migration.

Discussed provincial issues with CJP: CM Murad

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah met with Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar in his court chamber on Saturday.

Addressing media following his meeting with the chief justice, Murad Ali Shah clarified that he had not been summoned by the top judge.

“It was incorrectly reported in the media that I had been summoned. I had not been summoned. Chief Justice had requested for a meeting with me,” the chief minister reiterated.

He said the meeting was not held over the purported lack of cooperation by the Sindh government with the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the mega money laundering scam.

“I discussed [a number of] provincial issues with the Chief Justice. I [also] told the Chief Justice about the JIT’s complaints. Providing information is the responsibility of the institutions, not the chief minister’s,” Murad said.

He shared that the JIT had asked for details regarding irrigation works and services, but it had given the provincial government only two days’ time to provide the information.

“How can we provide the data [in such short time]? It’s not like a button that [you can] press to provide the records.”

Murad said the chief justice congratulated him on his re-election as the province’s chief minister. He also appreciated the conditions of hospitals in Karachi and said they were better in comparison to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s hospitals, the minister shared.

Declining to offer any further details, Murad said he also discussed the National Accountability Bureau with the top judge.

Media reports on Friday suggested that the chief justice had asked to meet the chief minister over the JIT’s complaint that the Sindh government was not cooperating in the money laundering and fake bank accounts case.

The Supreme Court had resumed hearing the case against fake bank accounts that were used to launder over Rs100 billion out of Pakistan, at its Karachi Registry on Friday.

The Federal Investigation Agency is investigating 32 people in relation to money laundering from fictitious accounts, including former president Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur.

Zardari’s close aide Hussain Lawai was arrested in July in connection with the probe. The former president's another close aide and Omni Group chairman, Anwar Majeed, and his son, Abdul Ghani Majeed, were also arrested by the FIA in August. Lawai, Majeed and his son remain under custody.

Earlier this week, FIA sources informed that the mastermind of the money laundering and fake accounts case, Aslam Masood, had been arrested by the Interpol from Jeddah.

Kashmiris observe Black Day to mark illegal Indian occupation

Kashmiris observe Black Day to mark illegal Indian occupation
Pakistan, Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and the world over are observing Black Day, today, the 27th October, to convey to the world that India has occupied Jammu and Kashmir against their will and is denying them their inalienable right to self-determination.

On 27th October in 1947 Indian troops had invaded Jammu and Kashmir and occupied it in total violation of the Partition Plan of the subcontinent and against the Kashmiris’ aspirations.

The day marked with a complete shutdown in occupied Kashmir and rallies in world capitals. Call for the shutdown has been given by the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik and supported by other pro-freedom organizations. The resistance leaders termed the 27th October 1947 as the darkest day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Indian troops in their fresh act of state terrorism martyred two more Kashmiri youth during a cordon and search operation at Pazalpora in Sopore area of Baramulla district, today. These killings raised the number of the martyred youth to ten since Wednesday. Thousands of people attended the funeral prayers of the martyred youth in their native villages in Kulgam and Baramulla areas. The participants of the funerals raised high-pitched pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

The occupation authorities imposed curfew and strict restrictions in Srinagar, Sopore, Islamabad, Kulgam and several other areas of the territory in view of the Joint Resistance Leadership’s call for peaceful protests after Juma prayers, today, against the surge in killings by the troops. Juma prayers could not be held at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar due to restrictions. The authorities continued to place many Hurriyat leaders including Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Bilal Siddiqi, Engineer Hilal Ahmed War, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, Yasmeen Raja, Zafar Akbar Butt, Javaid Ahmed Mir and Muhammad Ashraf Laya under house arrest or in custody to prevent them from leading the demonstrations.

Despite restrictions, people staged forceful demonstrations in Srinagar, Badgam, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Islamabad, Pulwama, Shopian, Baramulla, Bandipora and other areas to register their protest against the killings. Indian police used brute force against the demonstrators in Srinagar, Redwani, Wanpora, Khudwani, Kulgam, Islamabad and other areas, injuring many of them. Hurriyat leaders and organizations in their statements paying glowing tributes to the martyred youth said that their sacrifices would not be allowed to go waste and their mission would be accomplished at all costs.

International human rights watchdog, the Amnesty International, today, expressed serious concern over a raid by the sleuths of India’s Enforcement Directorate on its headquarters in Bengaluru, yesterday, saying that the Indian government was treating human rights groups like criminal enterprises. The Amnesty International had on Wednesday urged Indian authorities to conduct effective, independent and impartial investigations into the killing of seven civilians in a blast in Kulgam area of occupied Kashmir on Sunday.

Israeli PM Netanyahu makes secret visit to Oman

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu met with Sultan Qaboos
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made an unannounced visit to Oman, an Arab state with which Israel has no diplomatic ties, and met with Sultan Qaboos, the premier’s office said Friday.

The two leaders discussed the Middle East peace process “and other issues of shared interest”, it said in a statement released after Netanyahu returned from the first such visit by an Israeli premier for more than two decades.

Netanyahu was accompanied by his wife Sara and his delegation included Mossad intelligence chief Yossi Cohen and National Security Advisor Meir Ben-Shabbat.

The visit came at the invitation of Sultan Qaboos and followed “lengthy contacts between the two countries”, the statement said.

Israel not an enemy of Pakistan: Netanyahu

It formed part of “the policy outlined by Prime Minister Netanyahu on deepening relations with the states of the region”, it said.

In 1994, then-Israeli premier Yitzhak Rabin visited Oman, and acting prime minister Shimon Peres also made a visit in 1996 and the two countries agreed to open trade representative offices.

In October 2000, Oman closed the offices after the outbreak of the second Palestinian intifada.

Florida man charged with sending 13 pipe bombs to Trump critics

 Sayoc in his booking photo.
An avowed Donald Trump supporter in southern Florida was charged on Friday with sending pipe bombs to critics of the president, including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Thirteen of the devices were mentioned on a federal criminal complaint. A 14th device was reported by the billionaire Tom Steyer, who has called for Trump’s impeachment.

Cesar Sayoc was arrested at an auto parts shop in the city of Plantation on Friday morning. His white van, which was covered in stickers celebrating Republicans and denouncing the president’s opponents, was parked outside.

Sayoc, 56, has an address in the Miami suburb of Aventura and an extensive arrest record. According to his social media accounts, he works as a booking agent for a live events company and is a former wrestler and cage fighter.

Jeff Sessions, the attorney general, said at a press conference in Washington Sayoc had been charged with five offences including threats against former presidents, assaulting current and former federal officers and mailing explosives. The charges were filed to federal court in Manhattan.

“Let this be a lesson to anyone, regardless of their political beliefs, that we will bring the full force of law against anyone who attempts to use threats, intimidation and outright violence to further an agenda,” Sessions said.

Asked why most of Sayoc’s alleged targets were Democrats, Sessions said: “He appears to be a partisan.” A court filing said the stickers covering Sayoc’s van included “images critical of CNN”, the TV station frequently derided by Trump, whose New York studios were the target of two bombs.

Speaking at the White House, Trump praised the “incredible job” done by investigators and promised to punish the person responsible. Speaking later at a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, Trump won applause from his loyalist supporters for calling for national unity and an end to political violence. But he soon attacked the media, encouraged chants of “CNN sucks” and set the audience up to boo the Democratic House minority leader, Nancy Pelosi, and reprise “lock her up” chants aimed at Hillary Clinton.

FBI director Christopher Wray said Sayoc had been linked by a fingerprint to a package sent to the California congresswoman Maxine Waters. DNA possibly from Sayoc was also found in one of the packages, Wray said, stressing that they contained authentic explosives.

“These are not hoax devices,” Wray said, adding that more could yet be in the mail.

Three bombs were confirmed by authorities when charges were brought, bringing to 13 the number known to have been sent. None exploded before being found and no injuries were reported.

The packages found on Friday were sent to two senators, Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kamala Harris of California; to James Clapper, a former director of national intelligence. Steyer, a donor to Democratic groups, said an additional suspect package addressed to him was intercepted in Burlingame, California.

Sayoc was born in Brooklyn, New York, and registered as a Republican in 2016, according to public records. His social media accounts contain photographs and video clips in which he is wearing Trump’s signature red baseball cap with the slogan “Make America Great Again”.

The 56-year-old has also posted material online denigrating Muslims and raising popular rightwing conspiracy theories including the false claim that Clinton killed a former deputy White House counsel, Vince Foster.

He threatened CNN in a tweet in August. Rochelle Ritchie, a former aide to Democratic politicians, said on Friday she reported Sayoc to Twitter earlier this year after he warned her: “Hug your loved ones real close every time you leave you home.” Twitter told her Sayoc had not violated its rules. A Twitter spokeswoman declined to comment.

Sayoc’s arrest record stretches back more than 25 years and includes charges for theft, battery, domestic violence and other offences. In August 2002, he was found guilty of making a bomb threat to a utilities worker.

Daniel Lurvey, an attorney who represented Sayoc in some of his criminal cases, said Sayoc had been “normal and courteous” and did not seem politically angry. “I think it’s a recent phenomenon that’s happening to a lot of people who have feelings under the surface that are brought out by this divisive political climate,” said Lurvey.

On Friday afternoon, police and security guards were blocking off an upmarket 27-story condominium block in Aventura, where Sayoc has been listed as a resident.

Neighbours said they were surprised. But one, Dan Ochsenschlagen, said there had been friction on the condominium board between Sayoc’s mother, the registered owner of the apartment, and other board members. Ochsenschlagen said Sayoc’s mother, who often made political statements, was president of the board for 17 years until she was voted out last December.

“Some of the things that were going on were very questionable,” Ochsenschlagen said. He said he had reported what he called “financial irregularities” to police in Miami. The Guardian was not immediately able to verify the claims.

Authorities hoped Sayoc’s arrest would end the steady discovery of more matching envelopes, containing what appeared to be pipes packed with explosives and connected to wires, across the US. The criminal complaint against Sayoc said the packages included photographs of the targets’ faces that had been crossed out with a red “X”.

The first package was discovered on Monday in a mailbox at the New York home of George Soros, a wealthy liberal donor. It was followed by similar packages intercepted by the secret service that were addressed to the homes of Obama and Clinton.

Over the following days packages were found addressed to former vice-president Joe Biden, former attorney general Eric Holder, former CIA director John Brennan, Waters and the actor Robert De Niro. All are high-profile opponents of Trump.

The package addressed to Booker was intercepted in Florida while the one for Clapper was discovered at a post office in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. It was addressed to Clapper at the offices of CNN, a few blocks away, where he is employed as an analyst.

CNN’s Manhattan offices were evacuated on Wednesday when another suspected pipe bomb was sent there, meant for Brennan. Both former intelligence officials have been outspoken critics of Trump’s actions in office. Clapper on Friday said the packages were part of campaign of “domestic terrorism” intended to sow fear.

“This is not going to silence the administration’s critics,” Clapper told CNN. “But anyone who has in any way been a public critic of President Trump needs to be on extra alert and take some precautions particularly with respect to mail.”

Clapper praised the FBI for its work and for persevering in the face of abuse from the president. Trump has accused the FBI of being involved in a “deep state” conspiracy to undermine him and of botching an inquiry into a private email server used by Clinton. “Will the FBI ever recover its once stellar reputation?” he asked in a tweet in August.

Shortly before the arrest, Trump complained that the attempted bombings were damaging his party’s prospects for next month’s midterm elections. He also appeared to stoke conspiracy theories.

“Republicans are doing so well in early voting, and at the polls, and now this ‘Bomb’ stuff happens and the momentum greatly slows – news not talking politics. Very unfortunate, what is going on. Republicans, go out and vote!”, Trump said. The president had also complained in a 3am tweet he was being unfairly blamed for the attempted bombings.

The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, said Trump’s reaction was “wholly inappropriate” and showed he had “never fully made the transition” to being presidential. “Am I hopeful that the zebra changes his or her stripes today? No,” Cuomo said on CNN.

Supporters of Trump speculated without evidence that the devices were not viable and could not have harmed people. Cuomo said: “No one can say that they were fake bombs. These were dangerous devices that could explode.”

De Niro made his first remarks on the pipe bomb discovered at his offices in lower Manhattan. “I thank God no one’s been hurt, and I thank the brave and resourceful security and law enforcement people for protecting us,” he said. “There’s something more powerful than bombs, and that’s your vote. People must vote!”

Second T20: Pakistan Set 148-run Target For Australia

Second T20: Pakistan Set 148-run Target For Australia
Pakistan set a moderate target of 148 runs for kangaroos after elected to bat against shaky Australia in the second T20 match on Friday in Dubai.

Earlier on October 24, Pakistan crushed Australia by 66 runs in the first T-20 international in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Shoaib Malik returned to the green shirt’s side and his availability means it is likely Pakistan will make at least one change, but it isn’t yet certain who he would come in for. Pakistan didn’t need the bowling services of either Hussain Talat or Mohammad Hafeez in Abu Dhabi, and those two could be among the likeliest to sit out.Pakistan: 1 Babar Azam, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Mohammad Hafeez , 4 Shoaib Malik, 5 Asif Ali, 6 Sarfraz Ahmed (capt & wk), 7 Faheem Ashraf, 8 Imad Wasim, 9 Shadab Khan, 10 Hasan Ali, 11 Shaheen Afridi

Aaron Finch said there may be a number of changes after the disappointing performance on Wednesday, so Australia’s line-up is anybody’s guess.

Second T20: Pakistan win toss, elect to bat first

Pakistan Cricket Team
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first against Australia in the second T20 being played here on Friday.

Opener Babar Azam and spinner Imad Wasim gave Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the three-match series along with their biggest T20 victory over Australia when they demolished the tourists by 66 runs.

Victory in today's match in Dubai would seal the T20 series and follow a 1-0 Test series win over Australia in the United Arab Emirates earlier this month.

Azam struck an unbeaten 68 while Wasim capped a return to international cricket with three wickets as Pakistan crushed Australia by 66 runs on Wednesday.

Azam hit five fours and a six in his 55-ball innings as Pakistan made 155-8 before Wasim (3-20) ripped apart Australia's top order as they slumped to 89 all out their joint-third lowest T20 score at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

Speaking after the match Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed praised the all-around performance of the team and said, "Our bowling attack is good, so we try to put some runs on the board and back ourselves to defend."

"Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez batted beautifully and when we bowl we always try to take wickets when we have the ball in our hands."

On the other hand, Australian captain Aaron Finch said the defeat was embarrassing.

"It's pretty embarrassing, to be fair," said Finch. "I think we were a little bit one-dimensional while batting, but that's a learning experience and I would say Pakistan have got a lot of variety in their bowling."

The match between Pakistan and Australia will start at 9pm Pakistan Standard Time.

The third and final T20 match between Pakistan and Australia will be played on Sunday in Dubai.

Bashar Assad’s wife Asma has been filmed speaking to women at a Syrian cancer center before attending her own treatment session. Back in August, Syria’s first lady was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Asma Assad was captured on camera at a local cancer center, where she arrived to undergo another treatment session. In the footage uploaded by the Syrian presidency, she is seen wearing a pink headscarf and warmly greeting the hospital staff and patients. She appears to have lost her hair as a result of chemotherapy.

The first lady herself is combatting cancer after being diagnosed with the disease back in August. At that time, Damascus acknowledged that she had started treatment for the early stages of breast cancer.

Born in Acton, West London, Asma is heavily involved in charity activities and humanitarian work. She has created a variety of not-for-profit organizations, and official photos often show her visiting schoolchildren, orphans, and injured soldiers.

She has three children with President Bashar Assad. She moved to Syria in November 2000 after meeting her future husband, who she married just one month later. Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war, the first lady has often been criticized for not speaking out.

Back in 2016, she appeared in a rare interview with RT in which she lamented suffering on both sides of the war and accused the West of dividing Syrian children according to the political views of their parents. Asma also revealed that she had rejected offers of asylum outside Syria during the war.

Saudi-led airstrike hits civilians at Yemen market

Saudi Arabia imports cutting-edge weapons from the US and other Western countries
A bombing by Saudi-led forces killed over 20 civilians at a Yemeni fruit and vegetable market in yet another highly-lethal strike near the key port of Hodeida. UN slammed the "shocking price" paid by non-combatants.

At least 21 people were killed and 10 more injured when the Saudi-led coalition bombed an open-air market outside Hodeida in Yemen, UN representatives said on Thursday. All of the causalities were civilians, according to Houthi medical officials.

The bombing raid hit a vegetable-packing facility in the town of Bayt el-Faqih, south of the strategic port, on Wednesday. The latest Saudi-led strike comes six days after its forces fired missiles at the crowded fish market at Hodeida, less than two weeks after a separate air raid killed at least 17 people riding a bus in the port city, and three and a half months after another bombing killed 51 people, including 40 children on a school trip.

"Civilians are paying a shocking price because of this conflict," said UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, Lisa Grande, on Thursday.

Saudi officials did not immediately comment.

In a telephone conversation with Saudi King Salman on Thursday, Chancellor Angela Merkel raised the issue of the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen and urged Saudi Arabia to ensure access for humanitarian aid.

Unprecedented threat of famine

In June, forces allied with the Saudi coalition launched an offensive to dislodge Houthis from the key port city. Hodeida plays a key role for supplying food to Yemeni civilians, as up to 80 percent of all imports and aid enter the country through its port. A siege or a naval blockade could spell disaster for the civilian population of Yemen, where 14 million people are balanced on the brink of famine.

"There is now a clear and present danger of an imminent and great big famine engulfing Yemen: Much bigger than anything any professional in this field has seen during their working lives," UN's aid chief Mark Lowcock said at the UN Security Council on Tuesday.

The war between the forces loyal to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi; backed by extensive Saudi bombing, and the Houthis started in March 2015. Some 10,000 people have been killed since then.

The impoverished Arab nation also faces dire economic difficulties, with average income dropping to less than half of what it was before the war, and prices for staple foods nearly doubling.

"The economic collapse is Yemen's silent killer; many Yemenis are struggling just to survive," said Tamer Kirolos, the head of Save the Children group in Yemen, on Thursday.
