President returns election, NAB bills

President Dr Arif Alvi
President Dr Arif Alvi on Saturday refused to assent to the bills recently passed by the two houses of parliament, seeking amendments to the accountability and election laws, and returned the two pieces of legislation to the government for “consideration and detailed deliberations” by parliament and its committees.

The president, who belongs to the former ruling party Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), has returned the two crucial bills using his powers under Article 75(1) of the Constitution, according to an official handout issued by the President’s Office.

Article 75(1) states: “When a bill is presented to the president for assent, the president shall, within [ten] days (a) assent to the bill; or (b) in the case of a bill other than a money bill, return the bill to the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) with a message requesting that the bill or any specified provision thereof, be reconsidered and that any amendment specified in the message be considered.”

There's a "strange" fear on Shehbaz Sharif's face: Imran Khan

PTI Chairman Imran Khan
PTI Chairman Imran Khan claimed Saturday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is "nervous" nowadays and there's a "strange" fear on his face as he castigated the government for rising inflation — which stands at a record high.

"Shehbaz Sharif has stated that everything has happened because of Imran Khan, so they should have let Imran Khan stay in power," the PTI chairman told a public gathering in Upper Dir.

Khan — ousted through a no-confidence vote in April and only the first premier to be voted out — asked the government that if they "cannot handle" the country's issues, then why did they remove him from power through the alleged "conspiracy".

The PTI chairman has refused to accept the new coalition government and has blamed the United States for backing the no-confidence motion that led to his ouster.

Khan is holding back-to-back jalsas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as he rallies his supporters for marching to the capital once again after he called off his protests in Islamabad last month, claiming that he feared bloodshed.

In today's rally, the PTI chairman said the threat letter — which he claims mentioned the conspiracy against his government — was presented before the National Security Committee (NSC).

"Instead of maintaining the neutral status, they should have stopped the interference. The government that has been imposed on us has darkened the future of the country."

Four of a family perish in Shangla forest fire

Shangla forest fire
Four of a family were killed as a result of a wildfire in the remote area of Ali Jaan Kaparai in Shangla district's Chakesar tehsil, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday, officials said.

According to Assistant Sub-Inspector Masood Khan, the deceased include three women and a child.

Footage of the blaze shows grass and trees ablaze, with volunteers trying to prevent it from spreading.

District disaster management authority spokesperson Inamullah Khan told media that a Rescue 1122 team and revenue department staff had reached the area to douse the fire while more teams were on the way.

"Forest, revenue and rescue staff are making efforts to extinguish the fire," he said.

The spokesperson said the fire had erupted in some bushes and spread to engulf a larger area.

He added that the bodies of the victims were taken to the basic health unit in Chakesar's Gunangar area.

Separately, Shangla Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ziaur Rehman told Dawn.com that he had directed relevant staff, including Rescue 1122 and forest department staff, to reach the affected area and begin relief efforts.

The DC said they had been instructed to control the fire as soon as possible.

However, he added: "The area where the wildfire has erupted is located at a high altitude and is not easily accessible as there is no [proper] route. People have to walk to reach there and that hinders rescue work and controlling the fire."

‘Global monkeypox case surge over 700’

Monkeypox
More than 700 global cases of monkeypox, including 21 in the US have been detected so far, said the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

CDC said investigations suggest that the disease is spreading inside the country.

Sixteen of the first 17 cases were among people who identify as men who have sex with men, according to a new CDC report, and 14 were thought to be travel associated.

All patients are in recovery or have recovered, and no cases have been fatal.

“There have also been some cases in the US that we know are linked to known cases,” Jennifer McQuiston, deputy director of the CDC's Division of High Consequence Pathogens and Pathology, told reporters on a call.

“We also have at least one case in the United States that does not have a travel link or know how they acquired their infection,” she said.

Monkeypox is a rare disease that is related to but less severe than smallpox, causing a rash that spreads, fever, chills, and aches, among other symptoms.

Generally confined to western and central Africa, cases have been reported in Europe since May and the number of countries affected has grown since.

Canada also released new figures on Friday, counting 77 confirmed cases — almost all of them detected in Quebec province, where vaccines have been delivered.

Though its new spread may be linked to particular gay festivals in Europe, monkeypox is not thought to be a sexually transmitted disease, with the main risk factor being close skin-to-skin contact with someone who has monkeypox sores.

A person is contagious until all the sores have scabbed and new skin is formed.

Bilawal writes to UN over Yasin Malik’s conviction

Bilawal, Yasin Malik
Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has written a letter to the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres to apprise him of the circumstances of Yasin Malik’s conviction in a manifestly-dubious and politically-motivated case.

The FM has mentioned the resistance leader's chronic ailment and the ruthless treatment meted out to him in Indian jails.

The letter is a part of Pakistan’s efforts to draw the attention of the international community to the alarming situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK).

The letter, written on May 31, also highlights the incarceration of Yasin Malik, his sham trial on concocted charges, malicious conviction and an attempt to portray the legitimate freedom struggle of the Kashmiris as terrorism, illustrate India’s blatant disregard of its international legal obligations.

Bilawal underscored that the malicious trial and conviction of Yasin Malik was a part of the Indian government’s ongoing attempts to persecute and repress the Kashmiris and their leadership and to implicate them in fictitious and motivated cases.

Elon Musk hints at cutting 10% of Tesla jobs

Elon Musk
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a "super bad feeling" about the economy and needs to cut about 10% of jobs at the electric carmaker, he said in an email to executives.

The message, sent on Thursday and titled "pause all hiring worldwide", came two days after the billionaire told staff to return to the workplace or leave, and adds to a growing chorus of warnings from business leaders about the risks of a recession.

Almost 100,000 people were employed at Tesla and its subsidiaries at the end of 2021, its annual SEC filing showed.

The company was not immediately available for comment.

Tesla shares fell nearly 3% in US pre-market trade on Friday and its Frankfurt-listed stock was down 3.6% after the Reuters report. US Nasdaq futures turned negative and were trading 0.6% lower.

Musk has warned in recent weeks about the risks of recession, but his email ordering a hiring freeze and staff cuts was the most direct and high-profile message of its kind from the head of an automaker.

So far, demand for Tesla cars and other electric vehicles (EV) has remained strong and many traditional indicators of a downturn - including increasing dealer inventories and incentives in the United States - have not materialized.

But Tesla has struggled to restart production at its Shanghai factory after COVID-19 lockdowns forced costly outages.

"Musk's bad feeling is shared by many people," said Carsten Brzeski, global head of macroeconomic research at Dutch bank ING.

"But we are not talking about a global recession. We expect a cooling of the global economy towards the end of the year. The US will cool off, while China and Europe are not going to rebound."

Musk's gloomy outlook echoes recent comments from executives including JPMorgan Chase & Co CEO Jamie Dimon and Goldman Sachs President John Waldron.

Govt approves 6% hike in defence budget

Defence budget
The government had approved an increase of 6% in defence budget for the outgoing fiscal year.

Rs1.45 trillion budget will meet the needs of the armed forces, including their enhanced salary requirements.

The decision to increase the defence budget by another Rs80 billion was taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet that in total approved Rs182 billion in supplementary grants.

The ECC also approved slapping a 10% regulatory duty on the import of petrol from China to curb the misuse of bilateral free trade agreement. Some oil marketing firms rerouted their imports through China to evade 10% customs duties.

The Ministry of Defence had demanded an additional Rs80 billion defence budget for “critical shortfalls” in addition to making adjustments in the budget for spending on the Jinnah Naval base, the Naval Base Turbat and multi-functional office building in the headquarters.

Federal Minister for Finance Miftah Ismail presided over the ECC meeting that approved Rs80 billion supplementary budget for the armed forces or to the extent of the actual additional expenditures being incurred. The finance ministry was of the view that the additional spending in fiscal year 2021-22 ending on June 30 will be less than Rs80 billion.

For the outgoing fiscal year, the National Assembly had last year approved a Rs1.373 trillion defence budget. With the raise in the spending ceiling, the next fiscal year’s defence budget may also now be higher than the earlier estimated figure of over Rs1.55 trillion.

In total, the Ministry of Defence got Rs153 billion or 11.8% additional money in this fiscal year over the revised budget of the previous year, which is equal to the average inflation rate in Pakistan. The defence spending will be equal to 2.2% of the Gross Domestic Product, excluding expenditures on the armed forces development programme.

Trade deficit crosses $43.33b in outgoing fiscal year

Trade deficit
Data acquired from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has revealed that Pakistan’s trade deficit crossed $43 billion in the first 11 months (July-May) of the outgoing fiscal year 2021-22, as the pace of increase in imports was more than the surge in exports due to the sky-high oil import bill.

Analysts fear that a record-high trade deficit may worsen the country’s current account balance and further weaken the rupee. They identified higher crude, petroleum products, edible oil, and other commodities prices in the international market as reasons behind the widening trade balance.

They further mentioned that growth in exports was reasonably good during the year, but it still has far less potential to reduce trade imbalances.

The first 11 months of the outgoing fiscal year witnessed a deficit of $15.88 billion or 57.85% higher than the $27.45 billion the economy racked up in the same period a year ago.

Imports surged to a whopping $72.18 billion while exports were at $28.848 billion in the July-May period. The imports were 60% more than exports, the PBS reported. In the same period last fiscal, imports were at $50 billion and exports at $22.576 billion. This depicts a 27.8% growth in exports and a 44.3% increase in imports.

Goods exports in May 2022 picked up 55.66% to $2.6 billion from $1.67 billion in the corresponding month a year ago, while imports rose by 25.4% to $6.64 billion from $5.297 billion in May 2021. The trade deficit in May 2022 swelled 11.5% to $4.04 billion from $3.63 billion in the same month a year ago.

Comparing trade performance with the previous month, goods exports in May 2022 were down 10.2% from $2.897 billion in April 2022. Imports during May 2022 were down by half a per cent from $6.679 billion in April 2022.

Amid the country’s external financing imbalance, the rupee devaluation did not significantly help boost exports.

It is worth mentioning that during the last fiscal year (2020-21) trade deficit stood at $31.1 billion or 34.3% higher than the $23.159 billion recorded in the fiscal year 2019-20. In FY21, imports clocked in at $56.405 billion and exports $25.30 billion.

During FY20, the exports hit $21.39 billion, while imports came in at $44.55 billion, a deficit of $23.159 billion.

The PBS also reported the services trade statistics for the first ten-month period (July-April 2021-22). During the period, the local companies hired more services from other countries than they provided to them.

The services trade deficit increased 71% to $3.58 billion in the period under review from $2.1 billion in the same period of FY21. The economy hired foreign companies’ services for $9.37 billion while selling its services abroad for $5.79 billion. In the same period of FY20, the services exports (money inflow) stood at $4.9 billion, and imports (outflow) were recorded at $6.99 billion. This represents an increase of 18.2% in exports and 34% in imports of services.

Government mulls treason charges against Imran Khan

Treason cases
Federal government is reportedly planing to file treason cases against PTI Chairman Imran Khan and the chief ministers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan over PTI's May 25 march.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior, the cabinet’s special committee meeting was chaired by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah.

Minister for Communications Maulana Asad Mahmood, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Kashmir Affairs Qamar Zaman Kaira, Minister for Economic Affairs Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Minister for Law Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, including Interior Secretary Yousuf Naseem Khokhar and Islamabad Police IG Nasir Akbar were in attendance.

During the meeting, the interior minister, interior secretary and IG Islamabad briefed the participants on PTI’s ‘Azadi March’ held on May 25.

The participants deliberated over filing a case under the charges of sedition against former prime minister Imran Khan and the chief ministers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Mahmood Khan, and Gilgit-Baltistan, Khalid Khursheed, the statement read.

“However, the committee postponed the meeting to deliberate over the matter further till June 6 to present its final recommendations before the federal cabinet,” the statement read.

During the meeting, Sanaullah urged the committee to recommend the federal cabinet file a treason case against Imran Khan.

“PTI’s long march was a fitna and fasad March, instead of ‘Azadi March’ as it was an armed uprising on the capital. Therefore, I urged the committee to recommend filing a treason case under section 124(A) of the CrPC [Code of Criminal Procedure] against Imran Khan and chief ministers of KP and GB,” he said.

While briefing the committee, the interior minister said a plan was made to siege and invade the capital with an armed force on May 25.

“With planning, around 2,500 miscreants were already sent to Islamabad and they tried to capture D-Chowk before the arrival of Imran Khan,” he said.

Sanaullah further said Imran Khan had violated the Supreme Court’s order and asked workers to reach D-chowk.

The interior minister told the committee that a group of armed people not only attacked police, Rangers and FC personnel, but also set trees and a metro station on fire.

Apple app store blocked fraud transactions worth $1.5b

Apple App Store
American multinational technology company Apple has said it blocked potentially fraudulent transactions worth around $1.5 billion last year.

The Cupertino giant claimed that it wiped out over 1.6 million risky and vulnerable apps and app updates from defrauding users. In 2021, with the App Review process, apps from more than 107,000 new developers landed on the store.

Apple rejected 34,000 apps for privacy violations, while 157,000 apps were rejected for being described as copycats or misleading users to make in-app purchases.

The new announcement by the company comes at a time when the iPhone maker is facing scrutiny across the globe over its tight measures on the App Store.

In a new post on its newsroom site, Apple detailed the efforts taken by the App Store throughout 2021 to prevent potentially fraudulent transactions on the platform.

As per the report, Apple has blocked fraudulent transactions worth around $1.5 billion (roughly Rs. 11,021 crore) on the App Store and blocked over 1.6 million risky and vulnerable apps and app updates from defrauding users through the course of last year.

The company affirmed that it used various measures including an App Review process that leverages machine learning and heuristics to discover and prevent frauds.

Apple's multilayers App Review process was used to extract details about the apps' potential issues and violations. Under this process, every app and update were cross-checked to ensure that they follow the App Store's guidelines related to privacy, security, and spam.

Apple claims that more than 107,000 new developers get their apps onto the store with App Review last year. Also, 835,000 apps and 805,000 app updates that are found to be problematic were banned. Developers of banned apps can file an appeal to the App Review Board.

More than 157,000 apps were rejected for being copycats, misleading users, or manipulating them into making in-app purchases. Similarly, over the same stretch of time, the App Review team of Apple halted more than 34,500 apps for including hidden or undocumented features.

"Sometimes, nefarious developers try to circumvent App Review by creating an app that appears one way, only to alter its concept or functionality once it's been approved," said Apple, adding that it shut down over 155,000 apps from the App Store for these violations. Apple said it rejected over 343,000 apps last year for requesting more user data than necessary or mishandling data they already collected.

Apple also revealed some figures concerning App Store reviews and ratings. The company said that it processed over 1 billion ratings and reviews in 2021 and blocked more than 94 million reviews and over 170 million ratings from publication. Around 610,000 reviews were taken down after publication over customer concerns.

Police bust ‘FluBot’ cell phone scam

Mobile phone scam
A mobile phone scam dubbed FluBot has been busted by the police of 11 countries that spread around the world via fake text messages, Dutch and EU police said.

Dutch cybercops led an operation in May targeting the malware, which infects Android phones using texts which pretend to be from a parcel firm or which say a person has a voicemail waiting.

Hackers would then steal bank details from infected phones, which automatically sent messages to other mobiles in the user’s contact list, passing on the scam like a flu virus.

“To date, we have disconnected ten thousand victims from the FluBot network and prevented over 6.5 million spam text messages,” Dutch police said in a statement.

The EU’s police agency Europol said FluBot was among “the fastest-spreading mobile malware to date” and was “able to spread like wildfire due to its ability to access an infected smartphone’s contacts.” Police had made the malware “inactive” but are still hunting the culprits, it said.

“This FluBot infrastructure is now under the control of law enforcement, putting a stop to the destructive spiral,” Europol said.

The countries involved in carrying out the investigation were Australia, the United States, Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, coordinated by Europol’s cybercrime centre.

FluBot became one of the world’s most notorious cyberscams after it first emerged in December 2020, “wreaking havoc” around the world, Europol said.

The agency said the bug had compromised a “huge number of devices worldwide”, especially in Europe and the United States, with “major incidents” in Spain and Finland. Australian media said last year that FluBot was spreading “like a tsunami” with some users being bombarded by texts.

The prime minister addressed the Pakistan-Turkey Business Council under the DEIK – Foreign Economic Relations Board, where he said Pakistan’s energy sector, with its vast potential in hydel, thermal, coal, wind, and solar areas, could prove ideal for Turkish investors.

PM Sharif said a number of leading Turkish investors had already made investments in Pakistan and assured them of full cooperation by his government to pursue their projects.

He said, given the growing energy needs and high global energy prices, Pakistan direly needed improvement in its energy sector and emphasised that Turkish investment would be a win-win situation.

He said that Turkey could help Pakistan save water by teaching them how to build and run dams.

In giving an overview of the economic and investment opportunities in Pakistan, the prime minister highlighted his focus on energy, housing, textiles, infrastructure development, agro-based industry, and oil and gas sectors.

He said Pakistan-Turkey relations are built on unbreakable bonds of love, affection, and respect as the two countries share a history, century-old tradition, and common aspirations.

He mentioned that the two nations always stood with each other at all times, and added that their relations were marked by extreme cordiality and exceptional mutual trust.

PM Sharif said Pakistan and Turkey must engage with renewed resolve and commitment to build upon this solid foundation, to take this relationship to new heights, particularly in the vital fields of commercial, economic, and investment cooperation.

He also emphasised that Turkish textile companies could explore the sector for joint ventures, especially for intra-industry trade as well as becoming partners in regional and global value chains.

He also invited Turkish firms involved in the agro-industrial sector and dairy farming, stating that there were plenty of opportunities in these sectors.

The prime minister stressed that Pakistani and Turkish companies could also work together in the oil and gas sector. They could collaborate not only in exploration and production but in building refineries and pipelines, he said.

Shehbaz Sharif highlighted the priorities of his government, saying that addressing the challenges of industrial sustainability, particularly in view of the global fourth industrial revolution, was significant.

He said Pakistan, with its huge youth bulge, could undergo remarkable progress and development in various sectors of public importance.

At the meeting, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Minister for Commerce and Investment Syed Naveed Qamar, and Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb were present.

PTI files plea in SC to obtain permission for another long march

Supreme Court
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking permission for a second long march to Islamabad.

The petition, filed by PTI Secretary-General Asad Umar, named the interior ministry, Islamabad inspector-general and others as respondents.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan had abruptly announced the end of his ‘Azadi March’ on March 26 and had given the PML-N government a six-day ultimatum to announce a date for a general election. He had later said he called the march off due to fear of bloodshed.

The petition filed in court today argued that the court should order that PTI be allowed to hold peaceful protests and gatherings in Islamabad and no obstacles should be put in the way of PTI protests in any city.

It said the court should order that no PTI worker or leader should be arrested or tortured, intimidating tactics against PTI and raids on houses should not be carried out and the movement of people shouldn’t be stopped.

The petition seeks that the court order that no force be used against the participants in the protest and sit-in.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for protests in Islamabad in case the government does not announce elections.

PTI's petition

Nine questions have been raised by the PTI in its petition submitted to the SC. They are:

Whether freedom of movement, and the right to peaceful protest and procession, is a fundamental right of all the citizens of Pakistan, under the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973 (hereinafter the “Constitution”)?

Whether constitutional rights, enshrined in Articles 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19 and 25 of the Constitution, can be unreasonably curtailed by executive authorities, through the use of disproportionate and unlawful force on the peaceful citizenry?

Whether the fundamental rights, enshrined in Articles 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19 and 25 of the Constitution must be respected and protected from unconstitutional and illegal curtailment by the governmental authorities?

Whether the State and governmental agencies of Pakistan can unlawfully deprive citizens of their liberty, guaranteed under Articles 9 and 10 of the Constitution, by arresting individuals who are participating in, or intend to participate in, a peaceful protest for the attainment of their democratic rights?

Whether the governmental agencies can, without any cause or reason, browbeat, intimidate, or physically harm individuals and groups who gather for a peaceful procession, thus violating their ‘inviolable’ dignity and privacy of home, as guaranteed under Article 14 of the Constitution?

Whether the citizens of Pakistan have the right to peacefully enter, move around and remain in various territories of Pakistan, in accordance with Article 15 of the Constitution?

Whether the citizens have the right to peacefully assemble, protest and hold demonstrations, for the achievement of their democratic demands, in accordance with the letter and spirit of Article 16 of the Constitution?

Whether the petitioner, a duly registered political party, has the fundamental right to organise, associate and conduct a nationwide political rally, in accordance with Article 17 of the Constitution, without unlawful interference by the federal and provincial government authorities?

Whether the arrest and detention of members of the petitioner's political party, prior to or during a peacefully organised protest, amount to illegal detention and arrest, as well as a violation of the Petitioner’s rights under Article 17 of the Constitution?

I dream to be no 1: Babar Azam

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam
Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Wednesday said that the national squad is excited to play in the upcoming home series against West Indies, slated to start on June 8 in Multan — the post COVID-19 scenario.

"It feels good to meet and interact with the media in this way [physically]," Babar said while addressing a press conference. The cricketers had been holding virtual press conferences and media talks due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Since the Pak vs WI series has been planned at an unprecedented time, the Pakistan captain said that weather shouldn't be an excuse. He said that the national squad is preparing in full swing to play in such weather.

He said that the weather might be hot but the team is fully prepared, he added.

Further briefing the media about the preparations for the Pak vs WI series, Babar said that the tournament is of immense importance for Pakistan to score greater on the points table. He, however, said that Pakistan will play positive cricket and give their 100% as no team can be taken lightly.

The Green shirts skipper said that commenting on giving Muhammad Haris a chance as an opening batsman would be immature now. He said that the combination of Muhammad Rizwan and him as the openers has been going well.

"We are aware of the bunch strength but we also have to consider our combination," he said.

The cricketer, however, said that the performance of Haris and other cricketers will be analysed in the camp.

Babar further stated that placing Shan Masood on a later position will be injustice as he plays in the top order. He assured of giving Masood a chance saying that the cricketer is in the selectors' view.

"I believe that I have to give a chance to players frequently to build the team," the cricketer added.

Babar vowed to do well in Test cricket, saying that he is playing well in white ball cricket.

"I dream to be no 1 in all the three formats but for that hard work is needed," he said, adding that he is working hard to achieve this target.

Babar said that the Men in Green are practising with the 50-over World Cup matches in view. He said that the team played against Australia — in what was the first tour of the Kangaroos to Pakistan in 25 years — under the same idea and the upcoming series is also a part of the preparations World Cup.

Massive decrease in the inflow of water in Pindi, Islamabad

Massive decrease in the inflow of water in Pindi, Islamabad
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Rawalpindi cantonment boards may have to start water rationing as water level in Khanpur Dam has dropped to just 24 feet above the dead level.

An Official at the reservoir pointed out that there had been a massive decrease in the inflow of water due to the prevailing hot and dry weather. He added: “Now, even Haro River, which feeds the dam, has started drying up.”

He said the dam would not be able to provide water for drinking purposes to people in Rawalpindi and Islamabad after July if the situation persisted.

According to a Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) official, Pakistan was on the brink of becoming a water-scarce nation due to constant rise in temperature and climate change. These issues demand improved water pricing and governance so that the threat of water shortage could be averted.

Water level in the dam reservoir on Tuesday was 1,934 feet above mean sea level (AMSL), which is only 24 feet above the dead level, another official said, adding this amount is sufficient for only one month if there was no rain.

He said the total storage capacity of the dam is 1,982 feet above mean sea level (AMSL), adding due to supply of water to different beneficiaries, the water level was decreasing by 0.1 foot per day and the outflow of 121 cusecs per day was much higher than the daily inflow of water.

“Due to the low level of water in the dam, the supply for irrigation purposes to both Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab has already reduced,” he added.

It has been observed that the lake has almost dried up; underground rocks and the dam’s bed have become visible at different points. Water sports and picnicking activities have also reduced at the dam.

local boat operator said business had declined due to low level of water, adding that he saw tourists only on weekends.

Farooq Shah, who owns a makeshift hotel on the bank of the lake said: Sales of local hotel owners have declined.”

He added that his daily sales used to be Rs15,000 to Rs20,000 per day but now they have gone down to around Rs5,000 to Rs7,000 per day.

ECP makes decisions according to the law and Constitution:Sikander Sultan Raja

Sikander Sultan Raja
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja on Wednesday said that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is "always ready for elections" as he stressed it will continue to make decisions without fear.

"The election commission makes its decisions fearlessly and it will continue to do so. If anyone is displeased by or disagrees with the decisions, it's their problem," he said during an informal talk with reporters following the administration of oath to two new members of the ECP. He was asked to respond to allegations of bias against the electoral watchdog.

The CEC said that "everyone is our friend" and the ECP makes decisions according to the law and Constitution.

The PTI has accused Raja and the election commission of bias, with former prime minister Imran Khan frequently calling on him to resign. On May 11, the party announced plans to file a reference against Raja, with Fawad Chaudhry saying the "biggest political party had lost trust in him".

On April 16, PTI leader and former human rights minister Dr Shireen Mazari had blamed the ECP for what she said was his "bias" against the party, a day after the commission had announced that would hold daily hearings of the foreign funding case against the PTI. Three days later, Imran had claimed that Raja's name for the CEC office was suggested by the establishment.

The former prime minister had alleged that Raja's name was proposed by the establishment after a deadlock between the then-government and the opposition, suggesting the chief election commissioner should be appointed through an independent body.

Imran had stated that the PTI would file a reference against the CEC, as the ECP had displayed “incompetence” by not completing the delimitation of constituencies on time, which delayed early elections.

At a rally held in Lahore on April 21, the PTI chairman had reiterated allegations of Raja being biased, stating that his leanings were so obvious that "he should be given a PML-N office position".

He had gone on to demand CEC Raja's resignation on April 23, when he had said at a press conference at his Banigala residence that the PTI did not trust the CEC because all his decisions were against the party.

On April 26, the PTI had staged protests outside ECP offices across the country.

Meanwhile, CEC Raja had maintained that he was working in the best interest of the country and that there was no reason for him to resign.

For their part, the PML-N and PPP had accused the PTI chairperson of attacking state institutions to get decisions of his choice.

Prime Minister announces Canada handgun 'freeze'

Prime Minister announces Canada handgun 'freeze'
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a proposed freeze on handgun ownership in Canada that would effectively ban their importation and sale, following recent mass shootings in the United States.

The bill must still be passed by Parliament, with the ruling Liberals holding only a minority of seats.

“We're introducing legislation to implement a national freeze on handgun ownership,” Trudeau told a news conference on Monday, joined by dozens of families and friends of victims of gun violence.

“What this means is that it will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer or import handguns anywhere in Canada,” he said. “In other words, we're capping the market for handguns.”
Days after Canada's worst mass shooting left 23 dead in rural Nova Scotia in April 2020, the government banned 1,500 types of military-grade or assault-style firearms.

But Trudeau acknowledged on Monday that gun violence continues to rise.

The government statistical agency reported last week that firearms-related violent crimes account for less than three per cent of all violent crimes in Canada.

But since 2009, the per capita rate of guns being pointed at someone has nearly tripled, while the rate at which a gun was fired with an intent to kill or wound is up five-fold.

Almost two-thirds of gun crimes in urban areas involved handguns.

Police often point to smuggling from the US — which is reeling from recent shootings at a school in Texas and at a supermarket in New York state — as the main source of handguns.e

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino estimated there are about one million handguns in this country — up significantly from a decade ago.
