NAB submits reply in IHC on Sharifs' plea for Avenfield verdict suspension

NAB submits reply in IHC on Sharifs' plea for Avenfield verdict suspension
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Saturday submitted its reply with the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on the pleas of former premier Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Captain (retd) Safdar seeking suspension of the verdict in the Avenfield properties reference.

In its written, clause-wise reply, the NAB requested the court to declare the pleas non-maintainable and turn them down. The document, comprising 11 pages, was submitted by the anti-graft body's deputy prosecutor general.

The NAB also raised objections to suspension of sentences handed to Sharif, his daughter and son-in-law. It said the anti-graft body was not initially made a party in the pleas.

The NAB proved charges against the accused, while the accountability court also detailed reasons for sentencing in its verdict, the reply read.

It said that apparently there is no weakness or legal flaw in the accountability court verdict, noting that the appeals against the verdict are already fixed for hearing after the summer break.

The reply read that after the presentation of evidence by the prosecution, the burden of proof was on the accused.

It added that the accused did not present anything in their defence.

Nawaz, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd) Safdar, were convicted by accountability judge Mohammad Bashir in Avenfield reference on July 6.

The Sharifs had challenged their convictions in the IHC, highlighting the legal flaws in the Avenfield case judgment and asking for the accountability court's verdict to be declared null and void, and the three convicts be released on bail.

Saudi Arabia tests Japan-inspired 'nap pods' for hajj

Saudi Arabia tests Japan-inspired 'nap pods' for hajj
Mansour al-Amer swipes a card to reveal a narrow sleep pod, reminiscent of Japan’s famed capsule hotels. But this pod is in Saudi Arabia, where the Muslim hajj pilgrimage begins Sunday.

The kingdom has plans to introduce capsule rooms in the western city of Mina in the coming days, as an estimated two million Muslim faithful gather for the six-day hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam.

The free nap pods are part of new measures Saudi Arabia is rolling out this year in a bid to modernise the centuries-old practice of hajj.

The government has also introduced apps for on-the-spot translation and emergency medical care.

Amer is the head of a Saudi charity, the Haji and Mutamer Gift Charitable Association, which is offering between 18 and 24 capsule for pilgrims to nap in for free in the coming days.

Each fibreglass pod less than three metres long and just over one metre high features a mattress, clean sheets, air conditioning and a large, well-lit mirror.

The pods can be lined up horizontally or stacked vertically to save on space.

We are always thinking about pilgrims and how to make them more comfortable during the rituals of hajj," Amer told AFP.

Israel kills Palestinians as March of Return continues

Israel kills Palestinians as March of Return continues
At least three Palestinians were killed by Israeli security forces in separate incidents on Friday as tensions continue in the occupied Palestinian territories following US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s capital and relocate the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to the occupied city.

Israeli scurity forces killed two Palestinians and wounded scores of others who had taken part in weekly protests in the Gaza Strip.

In the Old City of Jerusalem al-Quds, Israeli security shot dead a Palestinians after an alleged stabbing attack near a mosque complex.

Some 20,000 Gazans participated in Friday's protests, which took place a few hundred meters from the Israeli fence. Medics said Israeli gunfire killed two men and wounded at least 270 other Palestinians, 50 of them with live bullets.

The deaths brought to 170 the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces since the weekly protests began on March 30, according to a report by Reuters.

The campaign is pressing for rights to land that Palestinians lost to Israel in the 1948 war of its foundation, and for an end to the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gaza.

The alleged stabbing attack involved a 30-year-old Palestinian who had reportedly approached a group of Israeli forces standing outside the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, and apparently tried to stab one of the officers.

The alleged stabber was then neutralized by Israeli soldiers, and was confirmed dead shortly afterwards.

Palestinian witnesses, requesting anonymity, said Israeli forces closed four doors to the mosque compound in the wake of the alleged stabbing attack, and sealed off Damascus Gate area as well.

The dramatic shift in Washington’s policy vis-à-vis Jerusalem al-Quds on December 6 last year has triggered demonstrations in the occupied Palestinian territories, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Morocco and other Muslim countries.

On December 21 last year, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor of a resolution that calls on the US to withdraw its controversial recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israeli “capital.”

In an attempt to prevent the passing of the resolution, Trump threatened reprisals against countries that backed the measure, which had earlier faced a US veto at the UN Security Council.

On June 13, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, sponsored by Turkey and Algeria, condemning Israel for Palestinian civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip.

The resolution, which had been put forward on behalf of Arab and Muslim countries, garnered a strong majority of 120 votes in the 193-member assembly, with 8 votes against and 45 abstentions.

The resolution called on UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to make proposals within 60 days “on ways and means for ensuring the safety, protection, and well-being of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli occupation,” including “recommendations regarding an international protection mechanism.”

It also called for “immediate steps towards ending the closure and the restrictions imposed by Israel on movement and access into and out of the Gaza Strip.”

NASA detects hydrogen 'wall' surrounding solar system

NASA detects hydrogen 'wall' surrounding solar system
NASA s spacecraft New Horizons has found new evidence of a "wall" of hydrogen at the edge of the solar system, encircling all the planets and objects orbiting the Sun.

The "wall" is actually a vast amount of trapped hydrogen atoms caught up in the solar wind, which produce waves of ultraviolet (UV) light and have been detected by the sensors aboard New Horizons, according to NASA.

The phenomenon was first glimpsed by astronomers around 30 years ago, and was called helisphere. However, evidence supporting the theory has remained murky.

New Horizons has been using its on-board detector, known as "Alice", to look for traces of the celestial interaction. It picked up UV rays with "Alice" seven times from 2007 to 2017, and finally found evidence to verify earlier observations.

Google employees sign protest letter over China search engine

Google employees sign protest letter over China search engine
WASHINGTON: Hundreds of Google employees have signed a protest letter over the company's reported work on a censor-friendly search engine to get back into China.

The employees are demanding more transparency so they can understand the moral implications of their work, said the Times, which obtained a copy of the letter.

It has been signed by 1,400 employees and is circulating on the company's internal communications system, the newspaper said, quoting three people who are familiar with the document.

The letter argues that the search engine project and Google's apparent willingness to accept China's censorship requirements "raise urgent moral and ethical issues."

"Currently we do not have the information required to make ethically-informed decisions about our work, our projects, and our employment," they say in the letter, according to the Times.

Employee anger flared with a report this month in The Intercept that Google is secretly building a search engine that will filter content banned in China and thus meet Beijing's tough censorship rules.

Google withdrew its search engine from China eight years ago due to censorship and hacking.

The new project is said to be codenamed "Dragonfly."

The tech giant had already come under fire this year from thousands of employees who signed a petition against a $10-million contract with the US military, which was not renewed.

With the secret project, Google employees are reportedly worried that they might unknowingly be working on technology that could help China hide information from its people.

"We urgently need more transparency, a seat at the table, and a commitment to clear and open processes: Google employees need to know what we´re building," the protest letter says, according to the Times.

At a town hall gathering of employees on Thursday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the firm was committed to transparency, and that while it was "exploring many options", it was "not close to launching a search product in China," the Financial Times reported, citing a person present at the meeting.

Pichai said Google's stated mission is "to organize the world's information," Bloomberg News reported, quoting a transcript of the employee meeting.

"China is one-fifth of the world's population. I think if we were to do our mission well, I think we have to think seriously about how we do more in China," he added, according to Bloomberg.

"I genuinely do believe we have a positive impact when we engage around the world and I don´t see any reason why that would be different in China." Pichai said.

"We'll definitely be transparent as we get closer to actually having a plan of record here. We definitely do plan to engage more and talk more."

But a US study over 25 years indicates that moderate carb consumption - or switching meat for plant-based protein and fats - is healthier.

The study relied on people remembering the amount of carbohydrates they ate.

'Gaining widespread popularity'
In the study, published in The Lancet Public Health, 15,400 people from the US filled out questionnaires on the food and drink they consumed, along with portion sizes.

From this, scientists estimated the proportion of calories they got from carbohydrates, fats, and protein.

After following the group for an average of 25 years, researchers found that those who got 50-55% of their energy from carbohydrates (the moderate carb group and in line with UK dietary guidelines) had a slightly lower risk of death compared with the low and high-carb groups.

Carbohydrates include vegetables, fruit and sugar but the main source of them is starchy foods, such as potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and cereals.

The NHS Eatwell Guide provides details on how to achieve this kind of healthy, balanced diet and reduce the risk of serious illnesses in the long term.

Researchers estimated that, from the age of 50, people in the moderate carb group were on average expected to live for another 33 years.

This was:

  • four years more than people who got 30% or less of their energy from carbs (extra-low-carb group)
  • 2.3 years more than the 30%-40% (low-carb) group
  • 1.1 years more than the 65% or more (high-carb) group                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   The findings were similar to previous studies the authors compared their work with, which included more than 400,000 people from more than 20 countries

The scientists then compared low-carb diets rich in animal proteins and fats with those that contained lots of plant-based protein and fat.

They found that eating more beef, lamb, pork, chicken and cheese in place of carbs was linked with a slightly increased risk of death.

But replacing carbohydrates with more plant-based proteins and fats, such as legumes and nuts, was actually found to slightly reduce the risk of mortality.

Dr Sara Seidelmann, clinical and research fellow in cardiovascular medicine from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, who led the research, said: "Low-carb diets that replace carbohydrates with protein or fat are gaining widespread popularity as a health and weight-loss strategy.

"However, our data suggests that animal-based low carbohydrate diets, which are prevalent in North America and Europe, might be associated with shorter overall life span and should be discouraged.

"Instead, if one chooses to follow a low carbohydrate diet, then exchanging carbohydrates for more plant-based fats and proteins might actually promote healthy ageing in the long term."

'Not enough to focus on nutrients'
The authors speculate that Western-type diets that restrict carbohydrates often result in lower intake of vegetables, fruit, and grains and lead to greater consumption of animal proteins and fats, which have been linked to inflammation and ageing in the body.

Prof Nita Forouhi, from the MRC epidemiology unit at University of Cambridge, who was not involved in the study, said: "A really important message from this study is that it is not enough to focus on the nutrients, but whether they are derived from animal or plant sources.

"When carbohydrate intake is reduced in the diet, there are benefits when this is replaced with plant-origin fat and protein food sources, but not when replaced with animal-origin sources such as meats."

However, there are limitations to the study.

The findings show observational associations rather than cause-and-effect and what people ate was based on self-reported data, which might not be accurate.

And the authors acknowledge that since diets were measured only at the start of the trial and six years later, dietary patterns could have changed over the subsequent 19 years.

    'High fibre intake'
Prof Tom Sanders, professor emeritus of nutrition and dietetics at King's College London, also pointed out that the use of a food questionnaire in the study led to people underestimating the calories and fat they had eaten.

"One explanation for the finding in this and the other US studies is that it may reflect the higher risk of death in the overweight/obese, who may fall into two popular diet camps - those favouring a high-meat/low-carbohydrate diet and those favouring a low-fat/high-carbohydrate diet," he added.

Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist at Public Health England, said: "This provides further evidence that low-carb diets could be incredibly damaging to our long-term health.

"High-fibre starchy carbohydrates should provide about half of our energy, including fruit and vegetables, while reducing intake of higher fat meat and dairy."

SHANGHAI: China said on Saturday it has sacked six senior officials at its food and drug regulator after a safety scandal at vaccine maker Changsheng Biotechnology Co Ltd revealed failings at the government body including inadequate supervision.

In a post on its website, the State Administration for Market Regulation said that among officials dismissed were Ding Jianhua, who headed two departments at the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA). the same statement was posted on the CFDA’s website.

In July of falsifying data for a rabies vaccine and manufacturing an ineffective vaccine for babies, sparking widespread public anger and multiple probes including police investigations.

The Changsheng case exposed that the CFDA officials “did not provide sufficient supervision, strong enough oversight, nor were they strict enough in their inspections”, the posting said.

While there were no known reports of people being harmed by the vaccines, regulators ordered Changsheng to halt their production and recall the rabies vaccine. Changsheng has apologized and said it is cooperating with investigations.

On Friday, Beijing said it had sacked a senior provincial official and was probing a former top drug regulator. Xinhua also reported that more than 40 government officials, including seven at the provincial level, have been held accountable for the scandal and some have been sacked.

In a separate Saturday report, Xinhua said the central province of Hubei has removed six government officials from their posts in relation to another inferior vaccines case involving Chinese company Wuhan Institute of Biological Products.

The company on Friday said on its website that it has dismissed its deputy general manager in charge of production and warned or fined eight other employees.

China military likely training for strikes on US: Pentagon

China military likely training for strikes on US: Pentagon
The Pentagon claims China has expanded its bomber operations, and is “likely training for strikes” against the United States.

A Pentagon report released on Thursday said Chinese bombers are developing capabilities to hit targets as far from China as possible.

“Over the last three years, the PLA (People's Liberation Army) has rapidly expanded its overwater bomber operating areas, gaining experience in critical maritime regions and likely training for strikes against US and allied targets,” the report said.

The Pentagon report added that China’s space program was progressing as well.

“The PLA continues to strengthen its military space capabilities despite its public stance against the militarization of space,” it said.

The report, which comes amid heightened US-China tensions over trade, claimed that China is seeking to rapidly increase its global influence, with defense spending that the Pentagon estimates exceeded 190 billion dollars in 2017.

A US-based political analyst in California says Americans believe their so-called international order is being challenged by China and Russia.

In January, the US military put China and Russia at the heart of a new national defense strategy, saying great power competition, not terrorism, was the primary focus of US national security.

This month, the Trump administration announced an ambitious plan to usher in a new “Space Force” as the sixth branch of the US military by 2020.

The US argues its rivals like China appear increasingly ready to strike America’s space-based capabilities in the event of a conflict.

China: Turkey can overcome 'temporary' economic crisis

China: Turkey can overcome 'temporary' economic crisis
China says Turkey will overcome its "temporary" economic crisis, arguing that a "stable" Turkey plays a major role in maintaining "regional peace and stability."

The Turkish lira has lost about 30 percent of its value against the US dollar since the beginning of August. The currency crash occurred in the wake of tensions with the United States. The detention of Andrew Brunson, an American pastor, in Turkey has cast doubts over the future of Ankara's partnership with Washington.

China's Foreign Ministry said in a brief statement on Friday that it had noted the "new direction" of the Turkish economy and its foreign relations.

"Turkey is an important emerging market country, and it remaining stable and developing benefits regional peace and stability," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

"China believes that Turkey has the ability to overcome the temporary economic difficulties, and hopes the relevant sides can ease their differences via dialogue."

Washington has threatened to impose more sanctions on Turkey, making it clear that no immediate end was in sight to the showdown between the two NATO allies.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also referred to media reports that state-run Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Ltd (ICBC) had inked a $3.8-billion financing deal with Turkey. In July, China’s Xinhua state news agency reported that the Turkish unit of ICBC had signed the deal at a forum in Ankara, without giving further details.

Beijing says China has always backed business and finance cooperation between the nations and the signing of accords in accordance with market rules.

On Thursday, Turkey's Finance Minister Berat Albayrak reassured thousands of foreign investors that Ankara would manage to contain the currency crisis, vowing that his country would only emerge "stronger" from the current market volatility.

Power Resumption To Take Another 2-3 hours: KE

Power Resumption To Take Another 2-3 hours: KE
Karachi (August 18, 2018): A spokesperson for the K-Electric said that power supply had resumed in most of Karachi but a complete continuation will take “another 2-3 hours”.

Rapid work was underway to resume citywide power supply, he explained, adding that electricity was back on in F.B. Area, PECHS, and Saddar and an operation to resume power in Garden East, Kharadar, and Punjab Chowrangi was ongoing. “We’re making efforts to resume complete power supply quickly,” he said.

Areas that experienced power outage included Defence, Saddar, North Karachi, Soldier Bazar, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Pak Colony, PECHS, Lines Area, Mehmoodabad, Baloch Colony, and Jamshed Road, among many others.

Sources said that the city’s Jinnah International Airport was also impacted by the suspension of electricity, with major portions of Jinnah Terminal and the rest of the airport facing pitch blackness. They added, however, that alternative power sources were being utilised for the sensitive areas.

On its official Twitter page, K-Electric, the metropolis’ primary power supplier, said a “500 kV transmission line connecting KE to the National Grid has tripped”.

Large swathes of the metropolis and other areas in the Sindh province plunged into darkness as a major power breakdown hit southern Pakistan late Friday.

Almost eight hours later, power was still out in Quaidabad, Malir Halt, Rafah-e-Aam Society, Alfalah Road, and surroundings.

KE’s prior claims to resume power in 2-3 hours turned out to be false, as some areas in Karachi, the country’s biggest industrial hub, were still in the dark while others, where power had somewhat resumed, were facing intermittent power cuts, posing risk to electrical appliances.

Further, a power cut that hit the Dhabeji, Gharo, and Pipri power stations has impacted the water supply to Karachi.

However, power did resume in the Lasbela district and Thatta and its surroundings in Sindh six hours later. In Hyderabad, on the other hand, electricity resumed partially after eight hours in the dark.

Pak Army chief 'expresses deep concern' as violence in Afghanistan escalates

Pak Army chief 'expresses deep concern' as violence in Afghanistan escalates
Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Friday expressed "deep concern" over the rising number of violent incidents in Pakistan's westside neighbour, Afghanistan, that have led to the "loss of precious innocent lives".

The "COAS reiterates that there is no support to any terrorist activity inside Afghanistan from Pakistan side," a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) late last night said.

"The alleged return of injured / dead terrorists from Ghazni is incorrect," it added.

"Chief of Army Staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa (COAS) expresses deep concern on recent surge in violence inside Afghanistan and loss of precious innocent lives."

General Bajwa, according to the ISPR, further mentioned that terming foreign people — working in Afghanistan and falling victim to the violence — as terrorists was "unfortunate", since there were "scores of Pakistanis working in Afghanistan in connection with various businesses/ labour who periodically fall victim to terrorism acts alongside their Afghan brothers inside Afghanistan."

In addition to this, the COAS highlighted that many terrorists associated with the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and hiding under Afghan identities "are transported into Pakistan for medical help" when they are "injured/ dead".

"Additionally, Afghan refugees and their relatives also resort to similar practices," he added.

While Gen Bajwa, according to the ISPR's statement, stands resolute in his pledge to Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani for facilitating peace in Kabul, he "re-emphasises that Afghanistan needs to look inward as the problem resides inside Afghanistan".

"The solution thus remains on making substantive progress on Afghan reconciliation efforts as well as on [a] speedy implementation of [the] Afghanistan Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Stability (APAPPS)," the press release said.

"Pakistan continues to support all initiatives aimed at bringing peace in Afghanistan as there cannot be enduring peace in Pakistan and stability in the region if there is no peace in Afghanistan," it added.

Hottest Planet Discovered And Its Not Solar System

Hottest Planet Discovered And Its Not Solar System
One day in the distant future, a team of intrepid humans might board a starship and set out for a world beyond our solar system — may be one of the exoplanets of Alpha Centauri, the nearby star system.

One place we’ll never set foot on is Kelt-9b. In addition to being a gas giant without a solid surface, Kelt-9b lies hundreds of light-years away and is the hottest planet ever observed.

Temperatures on its outer layer can exceed 4,000 degrees Celsius (7,000 degrees Fahrenheit) — hotter than some stars — and a new study shows that its superheated atmosphere contains vaporized heavy metals.

“Metals have been thought to be an important ingredient in forming exoplanets, but they were never directly directed,” study co-author Kevin Heng, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Bern in Switzerland, told NBC News MACH in an email.

“Our result is the first robust, direct detection.”For the research, published Aug. 15 in the journal Nature, an international team of scientists used computer simulations to predict the presence of vaporized iron and titanium in Kelt-9b’s atmosphere.

Then they compared their prediction to observational data already collected by the Galileo National Telescope in the Canary Islands — and saw that the prediction matched the data.

Shehbaz terms current assemblies 'most controversial' in Pakistan's history

Shehbaz terms current assemblies 'most controversial' in Pakistan's history
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif has called the recently elected national and provincial assemblies ‘the most controversial parliament in the country’s history'.

“This assembly was made after massive rigging,” Shehbaz said while addressing the National Assembly on Friday. “What sort of an election was this in which from Chitral to Karachi, machines were shut down and polling agents were expelled."

The PML-N leader said that the Election Commission of Pakistan completely failed to fulfill its due responsibilities.

Shehbaz demanded the National Assembly speaker to form a parliamentary commission over the election rigging allegations.

"Parliamentary commission should present its report to the public and House within 30 days," he said.

"We won't attack parliament. We won't disturb the visit of foreign dignitaries to Pakistan. We won't curse the parliament. We won't force the Supreme Court judges to change their route," he said. "But we won't settle before getting answers of our questions."

Shehbaz said that the people behind massive electoral rigging must be unveiled and if the party are not given required answers it will launch a protest movement.

The PML-N president said that Nawaz Sharif is being targetted for giving a go-ahead for the nuclear tests while rejecting $5 billion from the United States of America.

He said that the Nawaz Sharif promised to resign if rigging is proved in the judicial commission. "Can you (Imran Khan) promise the same?"

Won't spare those who looted country, vows PM-elect Imran Khan

Won't spare those who looted country, vows PM-elect Imran Khan
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairperson Imran Khan, while addressing the National Assembly after being elected as the prime minister on Friday, vowed that he would not spare the ones who looted the country.

"I am grateful to Almighty Allah and the nation for giving me the opportunity to bring a change which the nation wanted. The nation was longing for the change we will bring," Khan said.

The prime minister-elect promised "strict accountability" and to bring back the looted wealth of the country.

"I promise my nation that I will do strict accountability. No robber would be given an NRO (National Reconciliation Ordinance)," he said, adding, "I have reached here after struggling for 22 years and have not been fostered by any military dictator."

Khan further said that he would answer the questions in the National Assembly twice a week.

Lashing out at the opponents who protested in the House prior to his address, he said, "I ask the parliamentarians who are shouting here, why they didn’t support re-counting in the four constituencies [PTI demanded after 2013 polls].

"We had to go to the Supreme Court. Had they supported us there would have been confidence over the electoral process across the board," the PM-elect said.

"We won’t stop anyone from going to the Election Commission of Pakistan or Supreme Court as we know that we didn’t rig the polls."

Imran, whose party swept the July 25 general election and commanded the loyalty of a majority of lawmakers in the Lower House of the Parliament, will take oath of the office on Saturday.

176 members of the National Assembly voted in favour of the PTI chairperson while his opponent, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif, received 96 votes.

Imran Khan and his party campaigned on promises to end widespread graft while building an "Islamic welfare state".

The party has already formed a government in its stronghold of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and an alliance with regional parties in the southwestern province of Balochistan. It is expected to form a coalition government in Punjab province, formerly a PML-N stronghold, in coming days. Sindh province remains in the hands of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP).

PTI candidates were also voted speaker and deputy speaker of the National Assembly this week, putting Khan in a strong position to carry forward his legislative agenda.

He will face myriad challenges including militancy, water shortages, and a booming population negating growth in the developing country, among others. Most pressing will be a looming economic crisis, with speculation that Pakistan will have to seek a bailout from the International Monetary Fund.
