Amazon deploys thermal cameras at warehouses to scan for fevers faster

Amazon deploys thermal cameras at warehouses to scan for fevers faster
Amazon.com Inc has started to use thermal cameras at its warehouses to speed up screening for feverish workers who could be infected with the coronavirus, employees told Reuters.

The cameras in effect measure how much heat people emit relative to their surroundings. They require less time and contact than forehead thermometers, earlier adopted by Amazon, the workers said.

Cases of the virus have been reported among staff at more than 50 of Amazon’s U.S. warehouses. That has prompted some workers to worry for their safety and walk off the job. Unions and elected officials have called on Amazon to close buildings down.

The use of cameras, previously unreported, shows how America’s second-biggest corporate employer is exploring methods to contain the virus’ spread without shuttering warehouses essential to its operation.

U.S. states have given Amazon the green light to deliver goods with nearly all the country under stay-at-home orders.

In France, Amazon has closed six of its fulfillment centers temporarily - one of the biggest fallouts yet from a dispute with workers over the risks of coronavirus contagion.

Other companies that have explored using the thermal camera technology include Tyson Foods Inc and Intel Corp. The camera systems, which garnered widespread use at airports in Asia after the SARS epidemic in 2003, can cost between $5,000 and $20,000.

This week and last, Amazon set up the hardware for the thermal cameras in at least six warehouses outside Los Angeles and Seattle, where the company is based, according to employees and posts on social media.

Thermal cameras will also replace thermometers at worker entrances to many of Amazon’s Whole Foods stores, according to a recent staff note seen by Reuters and previously reported by Business Insider.

The company performs a second, forehead thermometer check on anyone flagged by the cameras to determine an exact temperature, one of the workers said. An international standard requires the extra check, though one camera system maker said the infrared scan is more accurate than a thermometer.

How widely Amazon will deploy the technology at a time when camera makers are grappling with a surge in demand could not be determined. A Whole Foods representative said cameras ordered weeks ago were starting to arrive for use.

Amazon confirmed that some warehouses have implemented the systems to streamline checks. The company is taking temperatures “to support the health and safety of our employees, who continue to provide a critical service in our communities,” it said in a statement.

Early this month, Amazon said it would offer face masks and start checking hundreds of thousands of people for fevers daily at all its U.S. and European warehouses. Associates walk up to a Plexiglas screen, and an employee on the other side scans their forehead by pointing a thermometer through a small hole.

That process has not been without challenges. A worker performing temperature checks in Houston said his proximity to associates made him uncomfortable, in spite of the screen separating them.
“I didn’t sign up for this,” he said.

A Los Angeles-area employee, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said a line once formed outside her warehouse, and employees could not receive masks until after they had entered the building and had their temperatures taken.

The thermal camera system is faster, two other workers said, with no stopping in front of a screen necessary. The cameras connect to a computer so an employee at a distance can view the results, one said.

Amazon did not disclose whose gadgets it was using. One of the employees, at a warehouse outside Seattle, said the technology came from Infrared Cameras Inc in Texas. Reached by phone, ICI’s chief executive, Gary Strahan, said he would not confirm or deny his company’s working with Amazon.

Other purveyors include UK-based Thermoteknix and U.S.-based FLIR Systems Inc.

 Sheikh Rashid

"I requested the prime minister yesterday to reconcile with all media," he said. "Insha'Allah I will hold a meeting with him day after tomorrow and I will give you positive news [in this regard]," he added.

The minister said he had told the prime minister to bury the hatchet with the media in light of its 'responsible' coverage of the coronavirus pandemic in the country. He said that the media had risen to the task and made people aware of the coronavirus issue through its coverage.

"Media in Pakistan is the strongest media. It is also responsible and patriotic," he said. Rashid said that more people were watching news channels in Pakistan now as compared to before.

"The previous programmes I used to do [were watched by] six to seven crore people," he said, adding that that number had increased to seven to nine crore. "This means that 60% more people are watching TV channels. This 60 % of people have nothing else to do but watch TV channels," he added.

Offer prayers at home during Ramazan as protective measure against coronavirus: Fazal

Maulana Fazl ur Rehman
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazl ur Rehman said on Saturday that he will offer Taraweeh prayers at home during the holy month of Ramazan and practice social distancing.

"I will take precautions by offering prayers, including Taraweeh prayers at home," he said, during his interview with journalist Saleem Safi on Geo News programme Jirga. "I will try not to go to any mosque and be the cause of a public gathering there."

Fazl said that he will offer prayers at home with his brothers and nephews. In response to a question, he said that the agreement between the government and the ulema should be respected.

"In my opinion, when a consensus is formed on an issue and an Ijmah is formed, then that Ijmah should be respected," he said. "My personal opinion then remains my personal opinion," he added.

The JUI-F chief said that he had presented his recommendations regarding SOPs for mosques during the month of Ramazan at a religious gathering in Karachi. He said that a forum was formed and their recommendations matched his.

Fazl said that the suggestions from Indian ulema on the subject were also similar and an Islamic scholar from Nepal was very clear that very people should go to mosques to offer prayers in congregation.

A meeting was held earlier in the day between President Arif Alvi and Ulema to arrive at an agreement on holding religious events during Ramazan and safety precautions for mosques.

A 20-point agreement was finalised between both sides.

1. No carpets or dariyaan (mats) to be laid down in mosques because the virus is airborne. Clean floors for prayers must be ensured.

2. If people want to bring prayer mats from home they may do so.

3. No gatherings after namaz/tarawih will be permitted.

4. If a mosque has an open area/garden it is preferable to conduct prayers there.

5. People over 50 years of age, children should not be allowed in mosques.

6. Everyone must follow the instructions of social distancing by WHO and other health experts.

7. Tarawih should not be conducted on roads, footpaths and anywhere else than the mosque premises.

8. People should continue to keep observing regular prayers at home.

9. Masjid, Imambargah floors should be washed with chlorinated water regularly.

10. There should be a six-feet distance during congregational prayers/

11. The mosque should form committees to ensure that people are abiding by the rules and decided SOPs.

12. Markers should be made on the floors of mosques and Imambargahs to guide people about the distance they should keep from others.

13. People should do ablution at home.

14. People must wear face masks when coming to mosques and maintain physical distance.

15. People must avoid handshakes.

16. Itikaf must be observed at home.

17. No one must prepare or hold Sehri and Iftaar in mosques.

18. Mosque committees should be in constant contact with the provincial government.

19. Mosques committees are allowed to conduct tarawih under these SOPs.

20. If during Ramazan, government authorities feel that the situation has got out of control and the number of cases surge, the authorities can review the decisions taken.

PM Imran expresses fears coronavirus cases may rise by May 20

PM Imran
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday expressed fears that the coronavirus cases across the country may increase by May 20, saying that his government was concerned about the impact it would have on the poor in Pakistan.

The prime minister was addressing a video conference session with his ministers to update the masses about the coronavirus situation. He said that the situation in Pakistan was much better compared to other countries but expressed fears that the coronavirus cases could rise by May 20.

He said that his government was preparing to deal with the increasing number of cases but warned that it would put pressure on hospitals. He urged critics not to politicise the pandemic, saying that a partial lockdown had been imposed keeping in mind the plight of the poor in the country.

"I would like to request everyone to stop playing politics on this issue. This has been happening since the past two to three weeks," he said, speaking to media. "There is a group that wants more damage to happen in the country so that they can benefit politically from this."

PM Imran said that leaders around the world had made mistakes in dealing with the pandemic and had been reprimanded by media. He said that the Government of Pakistan had taken steps beforehand keeping in mind the interests of the people.

Addressing media reports about the rise in coronavirus deaths in Karachi, the prime minister expressed his displeasure by referring to them as 'irresponsible', urging people not to spread panic among the masses. "It is an irresponsible act to say people are dying without verifying it," he added.

The prime minister categorically rejected claims that the government was hiding coronavirus deaths. "Which silly government will hide coronavirus deaths? It is in the government's interest that it gets full information. If we hide facts from people, will the cases disappear?" he asked.

PM Imran said that it is his government's main aim to think of the impoverished when taking important decisions. "We must not think only of the people residing in Defence or E-sector alone," he said. "We should think about the people residing in katchi abadis as well," he added.

The prime minister cited the example of the Muhajireen and the Ansars who helped each other at a time of crisis. This, he said, led Muslims to establish the State of Madinah which was a perfect example for other states to follow.

"I believe this is a trial from Allah and it is my faith that Pakistan will emerge stronger from this test," he said. "Pakistan Paindabad."

Film Star Meera and Iffat indulge in a heated debate over age

meera and iffat omar
Actress Meera Ji and model-turned-host Iffat Omar indulged in a heated debate over age limits and the shelf life of an actor in which Meera Ji was of the opinion that there was no shelf life of an actor, whereas Iffat Omar said that she was talking about the age of leading ladies of a film or a drama serial.

“I am not talking about an actor. I’m talking about a heroine,” Omar said, on which Meera Ji asked how Angelina Jolie and Mahira Khan were still working, despite crossing a certain age? “They should stay at home at then. Most of our actresses have aged but why are they still working? Now, times have changed and age does not matter. Filmmakers are ready to cast mature actors. Why do our people like Hollywood films despite older women starring in them as lead heroines,” Meera questioned.

Omar said because of content but Meera said no. “It was because they are not into these age complexes,” she replied.

Then Omar came to Saqib Malik and asked him who would he cast if has a certain sketch of a character on his mind on which he said, “The world has changed and now there are characters written for all ages. We can give example of ‘Baaji obviously.”

Omar asked Saqib Malik who he would cast if has a certain sketch of a character in his mind on which he said, ‘The world has changed and now there are characters written for all ages. We can give example of Baaji obviously’

Iffat said, “no, this is a problem for me whenever I post my pictures people comment that you too old for this, etc so it bothers me.

Then Meera said in a lighter mood that,” I urge you all you aren’t allowed to say anything about age to Iffat Omar then Iffat said not only me but all the girls.

Meera urged to all girls that please don’t say things on age.

Then Iffat came directly to the question that was bothering her for so long and it was obviously about age. She said Meera I am 47 and soon will be turning 48 now minus the years from it and tell how old are you?

Meera said, my age on Google…

No! Not of Google’s one I want the number, she isn’t giving me the number.

Meera replied that I want to tell the girls admirers and the fans that Age and number don’t need to be told, hide it and I am the iconic Meera Ji and it is alright if you hide your age.

Saqib Malik also came to favour Meera and said why is age important.

All arguments and clash of opinions came to rest during the second part of the show.

He continued to openly make certain comparisons, “but it feels like the Clergy in my country is becoming like the Pharisees of Bani Isarel who want God to do what they say rather than surrender to what God says.”

Favipiravir: The antiviral being tested for coronavirus patients

Favipiravir
It is approved for use in flu outbreaks and has been deployed to treat Ebola, but now Avigan (favipiravir) is being trialled as a potential coronavirus treatment.

Here are some questions and answers about the anti-viral medication:

What is Avigan/favipiravir?

Avigan is the brand name of the drug favipiravir. It was developed by what is now known as Fujifilm Toyama Chemical and approved for use in Japan in 2014.

But in Japan, it is only approved for use in flu outbreaks that aren’t being effectively addressed by existing medications. It is not available on the market and can only be manufactured and distributed at the request of the Japanese government.

Favipiravir works by blocking the ability of a virus to replicate inside a cell.

There are some safety concerns: it has been shown in animal studies to affect foetal development, meaning it is not given to pregnant women, and some doctors say they would not recommend it for children or adolescents.

How is it being used to treat coronavirus?

Some doctors began trying favipiravir to treat coronavirus patients early on, reasoning that its anti-viral properties would be applicable.

Some initial results suggested the drug could help shorten recovery time for patients, with China’s ministry of science and technology hailing it as yielding “very good clinical results”.

There are currently around five clinical trials ongoing in countries including the US, Italy and Japan, where Fujifilm announced it would be testing the drug’s efficacy on a group of 100 patients through until the end of June.

The Japan study will involve administering the drug for up to 14 days to patients between 20 and 74 with mild pneumonia.

Gaetan Burgio, a geneticist at Australian National University’s College of Health and Medicine, said the trials would be looking at a variety of factors.

They include clinical outcomes — meaning effects on fever, cough, oxygenation, recovery time and time spent in hospital — as well as how quickly the virus clears the system, along with x-rays or CT scans for pneumonia.

“If we see a significant reduction in clinical outcome and lower viral load from the favipiravir group, this would be a good sign for a larger-scale clinical trial,” he told AFP.

What sets these trials apart?

While doctors have already been experimenting with favipiravir for treating coronavirus patients, these trials will be conducted according to rigorous guidelines intended to ensure the drug is safe and effective across a broad range of patients.

“Smaller studies have been reported but it’s hard to draw conclusions from these as patient numbers are small and the trials often don’t compare versus (a regime of) best supportive care and placebo, more often to another drug,” said Stephen Griffin, a virologist at the University of Leeds.

“The big trials should be segregated according to disease severity and will compare to placebo.”

How does it compare to other drugs?

Scientists are studying a wide variety of drugs for possible treatment of coronavirus patients, including remdesivir, another antiviral.

One study of the two drugs as a treatment for coronavirus found favipiravir was only effective at relatively high concentrations, with remdesivir considered a better option, possibly in part due to the way coronaviruses replicate compared to other viruses, said Griffin.

But remdesivir is not yet licenced anywhere in the world and has to be administered intravenously via a drip, whereas favipiravir is approved in several countries and can be taken orally as a pill.

Japan has heavily backed the drug, asking Fujifilm to ramp up production for use at home and offering to supply it for free to dozens of countries that have put in requests.

When will we know if it works?

Fujifilm’s Japan and US trials will run until the end of June, with other data coming in from trials in Italy and elsewhere. Additional information will also be available from so-called compassionate use of the drug by doctors offering it to patients in non-study settings where other medication is not working.

But Burgio cautioned against high hopes.

“There are to date over 300 clinical trials underway for COVID-19. The expectations are very high for a miracle drug!”

“Let’s wait and see. However, rather than drugs, the best treatment against COVID-19 for now is social isolation, wash our hands and stay at home.”

President Arif Alvi appealed the masses to donate during Ramzan

President Arif Alvi
President Dr Arif Alvi on Saturday urged religious leaders and the public to observe discipline while organising events for Ramazan during the coronavirus lockdown.

While presiding over a meeting with ulema in Islamabad, the president appealed to the masses to donate generously during the coming month of Ramazan since many madrassahs, mosques and welfare organisations looked forward to these funds for covering their routine expenses.

“As per the foundations of Islamic society, we as a nation should exhibit discipline, coherence and national uniformity as we continue our battle against the coronavirus,” the president asserted, adding that we [as a nation] can curb the spread of the virus in the holy month of Ramazan by staying away from crowds and unnecessary gatherings.

The president maintained that the people of Pakistan want to see their political and religious leaders on the same page and any conflict in this regard would be counterproductive.

“We have sought proposals from the provincial governments to incorporate their point of view while deciding in this regard,” the president said, adding that Interior Minister Ijaz Shah is in correspondence with the provincial governments in this regard.

“We will ask for forgiveness and salvation during this holy month,” the president said, adding that he was hopeful that all preventive measures will be taken to curb the spread of coronavirus during Ramazan.

Earlier on Friday, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Noorul Haq Qadri had said he was hopeful that the ulema would cooperate and adopt a ‘middle path’ while organising events for the coming month of Ramazan.

Speaking to the media, Qadri had said that during these challenging times, religious scholars were expected to show seriousness on the matter.

The minister also asserted that the incumbent government had taken all steps to ensure the health and well-being of its people and if the number for coronavirus cases surge because of any negligence, the situation will be out of control.

Assuring that the ulemas’ stance would not be ignored while crucial decisions are made, Qadri said that the government had imposed a partial lockdown across the country and had not issued directives to close mosques completely. Instead, officials have instructed to reduce the crowd at places of worship to contain the spread of coronavirus, he said.

Saudi princess Basmah jailed for more than a year without charge

Saudi princess Basmah bint Saud
Saudi princess jailed for more than a year without charge has made a public appeal to the king and crown prince for her release from a high-security prison.

Citing deteriorating health,Princess Basmah says she was ‘abducted without explanation’ and imprisoned in March 2019.

Saudi princess jailed for more than a year without charge has made a rare public appeal to the king and crown prince for her release from a high-security prison, citing “deteriorating” health.

Princess Basmah bint Saud, a 56-year-old businesswoman and outspoken member of the royal family whose father was the kingdom’s second ruler, was detained in March last year just before she was due to travel to Switzerland for medical treatment, according to a source close to her family.

The public plea for her release is the latest sign of turmoil in the kingdom‘s secretive royal family following the detention last month of King Salman’s brother and nephew in an apparent attempt to stamp out internal dissent.

“As you may be aware I am currently being arbitrarily held at Al-Ha’ir prison without criminal,or otherwise any charges,” the princess wrote in a letter published on her verified Twitter account.

“My health is deteriorating to an extent that is [severe], and that could lead to my death.”
“I have not received medical care or even [a] response to the letters I dispatched from jail to the Royal Court.”

Saudi authorities have not disclosed the reasons for her detention.

The princess said she was “thrown into prison” after being “abducted without an explanation” along with one of her daughters.

She appealed to her uncle King Salman and her cousin de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for her release as she had “done no wrong” and added her health status was “very critical”.

The princess did not specify her ailment, but her letter comes as the kingdom grapples with the fast-spreading coronavirus pandemic.

The government has imposed a round-the-clock curfew across much of the country to limit the spread of the virus. Saudi Arabia has reported 6,380 infections and 83 deaths from the disease so far.

It was unclear how the princess was able to tweet from inside al-Ha’ir, a high-security prison close to Riyadh known to be used for holding political prisoners.

Her public plea represents an unusually bold move by someone from the kingdom’s extensive royal family, comprising thousands of members, who typically refrain from publicly raising internal grievances.

It comes after the detention last month of Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz al-Saud,the king‘s brother, and the monarch’s nephew Prince Mohammed bin Nayef who was previously crown prince.

The government has yet to officially comment on the crackdown, which raised fears of government instability.

But one source close to the royal court dismissed such concerns and said the detentions were meant to send a stern warning within the royal family not to oppose the crown prince.

Prince Mohammed, heir to the Arab world’s most powerful throne, has pursued a broad crackdown on dissent since his rise to the position of crown prince in 2017.

Multiple women’s rights activists, Islamic scholars, bloggers and journalists have been jailed in what observers call increasing repression and authoritarianism as he consolidates his grip on power.

“The Presidency regrets to announce the passage of the Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari,” said presidency spokesman Garba Shehu in a tweet, using an honorific title for Kyari.

Status of England tour being monitored: Wasim Khan

Wasim Khan
A top official of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday expressed optimism that the T20 World Cup and Asia Cup will take place as planned, while also saying that the situation about Pakistan’s tour of England was being monitored in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.

“As per everywhere else in the world, sport has ceased for the time being due to the coronavirus. The health and wellbeing of people take precedent and we at the PCB will always put the health and wellbeing of our staff, players and officials first,” PCB chief executive officer Wasim Khan said. “We will continue to speak to the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB); this remains an evolving situation and we will monitor it week-by-week. It is too early to say at this stage if the tour will go ahead or not. United Kingdom has been hit pretty badly by Covid-19 so we will need to be convinced first and foremost that it is safe for our squad to travel and play.”

Pakistan are scheduled to play three Tests — Lord’s (July 30-Aug 3), Old Trafford (Aug 7-11) and Trent Bridge (Aug 20-24) — and three Twenty20 Internationals (Headingley, Aug 29), Cardiff (Aug 31) and Southampton (Sept 2) against England after travelling to the Netherlands for three One-day Internationals in Amstelveen between July 4 and 9 and Ireland for two T20 games on July 12 and 14, respectively.

The PCB official also added that the prospects of Cricket West Indies (CWI) staging the England home series against the West Indies and Pakistan in the Caribbean were bleak. “As far PCB is concerned, I think it is highly unlikely that this will happen.”

Commenting on the Asia Cup in September and T20 World Cup — the global event to be staged in Australia from Oct 18 to Nov 15 — Wasim said it’s far too early to speculate whether those events would be affected by Covid-19.

“Thankfully the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup are months away. There will be a need for a lot of patience over the coming months and I am sure that the Asian Cricket Council and the International Cricket Council will make the right decision based on the situation closer to the time.”

Meanwhile, Wasim urged the general public to follow the guidelines given by the federal government to avoid coming in contact with the coronavirus.

“At this time, it is important that we all stay safe and listen to the guidelines being given by the government. The PCB, as a responsible organisation, has used its players to get key messages out about how to stay safe. We hope and pray that the situation eases for all the people of our country. We need to remain vigilant and resilient as a nation,” Wasim advised.

Gilgit-Baltistan minister quits over failure to get lockdown eased

Dr Mohammad Iqbal
Gilgit-Baltistan minister for works Dr Mohammad Iqbal announced his resignation here on Thursday over non-implementation of the government committee’s decision to relax lockdown in the region.

Addressing a press conference at Gilgit Press Club, he accused the local bureaucracy of humiliating GB representatives by not implementing their decisions.

Dr Iqbal said the GB cabinet committee, including six ministers and secretaries, had decided on Tuesday to relax the lockdown restrictions in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The committee had decided to allow opening of markets, construction work and government offices from 6am in the morning to 1pm from Monday to Thursday while complete lockdown would be continued on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Dr Iqbal said that the decision was finalised and SOPs made on Tuesday.

After preparation of the SOPs in the committee meetings regarding relaxation of lockdown restrictions for next two weeks, home secretary Mohammad Ali Randhawa, who was also a member of the committee, objected to the decision.

“I asked the home secretary why he didn’t tell me earlier if the decision was to be taken by the Apex committee,” said Dr Iqbal.

However, he said, after consultation with the committee members and GB chief minister the decision had been announced on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference in Gilgit on Wednesday, Dr Iqbal and minister for law Aurangzab Khan announced relaxation of the lockdown.

However, in a press statement adviser to the CM Shams Mir, announced reversal of the decision on Wednesday night, saying the apex committee would decide the matter.

Reacting to this, Dr Iqbal said that the local administration had manipulated the GB affairs and insulted its representatives.

He said that the main cause of humiliation of GB people was its deprivation from the constitutional status.

He said that had the GB been represented in the National Assembly or Senate of Pakistan such an incident would not have occurred. Dr Iqbal said that he had decided to resign from his post and sent his resignation to the GB chief minister.

Government approves ordinance against hoarding of goods

Government approves ordinance against hoarding of goods
The federal government on Friday approved an ordinance against hoarding basic food items and goods, a few months after the sugar and wheat crises caused prices of basic food items to skyrocket across the country.

The prime minister presided over a meeting focused on curbing smuggling and hoarding of basic food items. As per the ordinance, those found guilty of hoarding will be slapped with a three-year imprisonment sentence and a heavy fine.

The prime minister directed the government to seek help from intelligence agencies in identifying smugglers and hoarders. During the meeting, he said that stern action against smugglers and hoarders was necessary as these crimes ultimately resulted in the poor paying a heavy price.

During the meeting, the prime minister reportedly said that stern action against hoarding and profiteering was unavoidable as the offences damaged the country's economy.

He called on the government to appoint honest and trustworthy officers to keep in check hoarding and similar offences. PM Imran asked the government to monitor the situation regarding food prices on a daily basis and ensure no administrative hurdles thwarted the government from performing its duties.

PM Imran has, on several occasions in the past, warned that the government will take strict action against those found involved in profiteering and hoarding.

"Those who want to make money from the hunger of the poor, the state will take strict action against you. The state will make an example out of you," he had said last month during his address to the nation.

In January, prices of wheat surged across the country after it emerged that the staple food's quantity had decreased significantly in markets across the country.

The wheat crisis originated in Sindh and then spread to other provinces. It said that corruption probes against officials in the Sindh government discouraged many in the province from the procurement of wheat that would otherwise have increased existing surplus wheat stock. At one point, the reserve stock was as low as 0.2 million tons.

The problem was exacerbated by a decision to export 200,000 to 400,000 tons of wheat, keeping in view surplus stocks on the basis of estimates presented by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, but the actual exports of wheat crossed 640,000 tons.

Shortly after the wheat crisis ended, sugar prices went up as the product was found scarce in short supply in markets across the country. Hoarding and an artificial increase in the prices of the commodity were cited as the main reasons for the surge in the prices of the product.

London buses step up virus measures after 20 drivers die

London buses step up virus measures after 20 drivers die
London's transport authorities on Friday announced new measures to protect bus drivers from coronavirus, as colleagues held a minute's silence for 20 who have already died.

Mayor Sadiq Khan, whose father was a bus driver, led tributes to the victims as authorities said passengers would no longer be able to use the front door near the driver.

“It breaks my heart that 20 London bus workers have lost their lives to #Covid19. It could easily have been my dad and his friends,” Khan wrote on Twitter.

“Our transport workers are heroes and we must do everything we can to protect them.”

He joined a minute's silence called by the trade union Unite, which has been pressing for better protection for London's 20,000 bus drivers and other transport staff.

London is on the front line of the coronavirus outbreak in Britain, where almost 14,000 people have died, making it one of the worst hit countries in the world.

Since a nationwide lockdown was introduced last month, bus passengers numbers in London have fallen by about 85 per cent.

But a reduced service is still running on the buses and trains for key workers. Four Underground and train staff have also died.

Transport for London (TfL), the city's travel authority, has already introduced a new cleaning regime for buses, stations and depots.

The seats at the front of buses closest to the driver have been roped off and drivers sit behind a clear protective screen.

In the new measure to be introduced from Monday, the front doors will now be kept shut with passengers asked to get on and off using the middle doors.

Pete Kavanagh, Unite's London representative, said it was a “very welcome move”.

“We have lost members of our bus family in recent days and we refuse to lose any more,” he said.

“Unite has been asking for central boarding as an essential safety measure during these times because bus workers are, understandably, fearful for their health.”

Not all protective measures have been so well-received by workers.

The RMT union reported that one bus operator in south-west England responded to its demands for more protection by fitting “what can best be described as a shower curtain” to the driver's cab.

Drivers complained that “the curtain is so flimsy members of the public have been pulling it to one side in order to speak to the driver” — which risks greater contact with passengers.

Khan is also lobbying the British government to advise people to wear face masks on public transport, to try to stem the spread of coronavirus.

Ministers have expressed scepticism about the idea in the past, but say the issue is under review.

'Premature' to say all deaths taking place due to Covid-19: Zafar Mirza

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza on Friday said that it would be "premature" to say that all deaths occurring in the country were due to Covid-19.

Speaking at a media briefing in Islamabad, Mirza said that the primary method of ascertaining whether a person died due to Covid-19 is a laboratory test. "If tests haven't been done, you cannot say whether a person has died from Covid-19," he said, adding that without testing, any conclusions would be "mere speculation".

The SAPM added that the government would issue an advisory in the coming days for doctors working in emergencies about how they should receive dead on arrival or critically ill cases.

"The advisory will contain instructions on how and when to carry out tests of such people if doctors clinically suspect they are Covid-19 positive," Mirza said.

Referring to media reports claiming the number of deaths in Sindh was much higher than being reported, Mirza said that the Sindh health minister had started a process of contact tracing after some recent unexplained deaths, which he termed a welcome move.

The SAPM said that 6,264 coronavirus tests were conducted across the country on Thursday, adding that it was the highest number of tests in a single day so far.

He revealed that Pakistan now has nearly one million testings kits and more than 20,000 tests would be carried out daily by the month's end.

Mirza said these tests would help authorities identify the people who have the coronavirus whether they exhibit symptoms or not. He added that 60 per cent of coronavirus cases in the country were locally transmitted.

Appreciating the nation's resilience during this time, the SAPM said that the country always united in the face of a calamity. "We are getting contributions in the form of money, equipment and medicines not only from people in the country but Pakistanis living abroad as well."

Some 30,000 Pakistani doctors are serving in foreign countries, Mirza revealed, adding that many of them had expressed a desire to help during the pandemic.

He said the government was launching a technology-based platform called "Yaaran-e-Watan" for all such overseas Pakistani doctors and nurses who wanted to help treat coronavirus patients in the country.

Taraweeh, Eid prayers to be offered at home if pandemic situation continues

Taraweeh, Eid prayers to be offered at home
Muslims will offer Taraweeh prayers during the month of Ramazan and Eid prayers at home if the coronavirus situation continues, said Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al El-Sheikh said on Friday.

“Ramazan’s Taraweeh (evening) prayer can be performed at home if it cannot be performed at mosques due to the preventive measures taken to fight the spread of coronavirus,” he said.

The statement from the Saudi mufti came after the kingdom confirmed 518 cases of the coronavirus on Friday while four people succumbed to the virus on Thursday.

The Saudi grand mufti said that the Eid prayers will be offered at home with a sermon following it.

The coronavirus has affected more than 2 million people around the globe and killed more than 140,000 after spreading to more than 200 countries ever since its first case was reported in Wuhan, China last year.

Saudi Arabia had announced a lockdown last month and directed tourists to leave the country as the pandemic started to gain ground in the kingdom. The Umrah pilgrimage has been suspended in the country while it remains a question whether or not Hajj will be held this year or not.

Saudi Arabia had also suspended passenger traffic through all land crossings with Jordan , while commercial and cargo traffic is still allowed, and the passage of exceptional humanitarian cases.

China denies cover-up in coronavirus outbreak

China denies cover-up in coronavirus
China on Friday denied Western suggestions it had covered up the extent of its coronavirus outbreak and rejected US allegations it has an overly cozy relationship with the World Health Organization.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian acknowledged that the virus's rapid spread had contributed to undercounting that resulted in China raising its death toll earlier Friday, but added "there has never been any concealment, and we´ll never allow any concealment."

The allegations China is too close to the World Health Organization (WHO), were an attempt at "smearing" Beijing, Zhao said.

US President Donald Trump has questioned China's handling of the pandemic and whether it had been completely transparent since the virus emerged in the central city of Wuhan late last year. On Thursday, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed doubts about China´s virus response.

These doubts were spotlighted again on Friday when authorities in Wuhan, which has borne the brunt of Chinese deaths, abruptly raised its death toll by 50 percent - or 1,290 deaths - to a new total of 3,869. That also pushed the nationwide death toll up sharply to 4,632, based on official national data released earlier in the day.

Wuhan authorities cited several reasons for the missed cases, including that the city´s medical staff were overwhelmed in the early days as infections climbed, leading to "late reporting, omissions or mis-reporting". Zhao said such miscounting was to be expected in the initial stages of a major disease outbreak.

US President Donald Trump - under fire himself for initially denying the seriousness of the pandemic - has accused the WHO of doing the same and being too trusting of China´s assurances over the outbreak. On Tuesday he announced a suspension of US funding to the world body.

Asked about the US allegations, Zhao defended the WHO and China. "I think they are all smearing China and cooking up stories about China," he said, without specifying which countries he was referring to.

China has largely brought the contagion under control domestically via tough measures including the unprecedented lockdown of Wuhan and tens of millions of people in surrounding areas, but not before it spread worldwide.

New website helps Nigerians check if have coronavirus

New website helps Nigerians check if have coronavirus
New website is helping Nigerians check if they have coronavirus and site will determine if a person needs to visit a coronavirus test center.

While Nigeria has fewer confirmed cases of coronavirus than some other countries in Africa, it’s not taking any chances.

A new website is helping NIgerians find out whether they’re at risk of Covid-19.

Created through a partnership between the Wellbeing Foundation and PocketPatientMD, the site will determine if a person needs to visit a coronavirus test center based on a series of questions.

The Wellbeing Foundation works with mothers and midwives across the country to ensure adequate maternal and newborn health, while PocketPatientMD is a platform that allows patients and physicians to manage their medical records digitally.

“The main motive for having the website is to help the Nigerian government reduce the spread of the virus,” said Chris Roberts, IT manager for the Wellbeing Foundation. “We want to contribute by giving people a way to check if they are at risk of the virus. At the same time, we want to link them to the right place to get help if they are.”

This website allows Nigerians to determine if they are at elevated risk of contracting coronavirus.

The site asks users about their location, recent travel history and symptoms to ascertain whether or not someone needs to get tested.

As of late Tuesday Nigeria had 373 confirmed cases of coronavirus.
Citizens and private organizations are also creating other tools to help curb the spread of the virus.

And tailors in Abia,in southeastern Nigeria, are using locally sourced materials to sew face masks and medical overalls for health workers and others.

If the site determines a person needs to get tested for the virus, it will share emergency numbers for the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) location closest to where they live.

The NCDC is the country’s leading national public health institute and has been at the forefront of the coronavirus pandemic, collating data and responding to suspected cases of the virus.

So far, the agency has tested more than 5,000 samples in Nigeria.

The website can also directly link users with symptoms of coronavirus to doctors and the NCDC, according to Roberts.

“If the person gives their full details then they can be sent to NCDC. All such cases that are red flags will be sent to the NCDC and they can contact the person directly,” he said.

The website also provides users with answers to the most frequently asked questions about coronavirus.

Roberts says one of the objectives of the website is to gather insights into the regions of Nigeria that are considered vulnerable for the coronavirus‘ spread.

“If a person puts in their proper location and other people who have the virus or symptoms do the same, then we can infer from the information that that particular area is a hot zone for the spread of the virus,” he said.

Information on coronavirus hot zones will be used to generate maps and reports that can be sent to public officials to give insights on areas to pay more attention to.

The data will also be shared with the NCDC and other verified researchers, according to Roberts.

Large events, concerts may not be possible until 2021: Mayor Los Angeles

Large events, concerts may not be possible until 2021
Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti has said Large sporting events or concerts may not be possible until 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Large sporting events or concerts may not be possible in the Los Angeles area for the rest of the year due to the coronavirus outbreak, the mayor of the nation’s second-largest city said Wednesday.

“It’s difficult to imagine us getting together in the thousands any time soon,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said during an interview.

“I think we should be prepared for that this year. I think we all have never wanted science to work so quickly. But until there’s either a vaccine, some sort pharmaceutical intervention or herd immunity, the science is the science.”

Later, Garcetti clarified that he doesn’t yet have an official timeline for when large events will be possible, but stressed he wasn’t talking about all events.
“All I know is while we don’t know the date those things will return, I know they will be sooner the more we take these actions,” he said, referring to mitigation measures such as quarantining at home and social distancing.

“I certainly would love to see some sports games and concerts later this year,” he continued, “and whether that means those are athletes playing by themselves [without live spectators] or whether that can be potentially in person. But I think we’re a long way off from huge gatherings. We are not as long away from medium-size gatherings. And we’re still today not at a place of even small gatherings.”

The restrictions could also delay the opening of SoFi Stadium, the new $5 billion Inglewood, Calif., home of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, which is scheduled for this fall, ChargersWire reported. Construction on the stadium has continued despite the pandemic.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom reiterated that gatherings of hundreds or thousands of people will likely be impossible very soon based on current guidelines.

Setting a precise date for a return to many normal activities is difficult to do, Dr. Paul Simon from the Los Angeles Department of Public Health said.

“The important point is we can’t predict the future,” Simon said. “I think we have to take it week by week. … I think if we do scale back it will be in a very gradual and strategic way.”

President Trump said this week he would like to start opening up parts of the country on May 1.

Spokesperson for the Foreign Office (FO) Aisha Farooqui on Thursday said that Pakistan had deep concerns over the alarming human rights situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

"India is continuously violating ceasefire agreements signed with Pakistan," Farooqi added, condemning the violations that have resulted in the loss of innocent lives on the Pakistani side of the border.

"Pakistan will continue to respond befittingly to the Indian aggression. This year alone India has carried out more than 700 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control with Pakistan," she said.

"India has been engaged in injustices in Kashmir since August 5 last year. While the world is busy with the virus situation, RSS is implementing a Hindu nationalist agenda in India," she noted.
