Six terrorists including BLA commander killed in Balochistan IBO
Six terrorists including a Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) commander were killed in an intelligence-based operation (IBO) by security forces in Harnai area of Balochistan.

According to the ISPR, on the confirmed presence of terrorists in a hideout near Jamboro area of Harnai, the security forces conducted IBO in the area to apprehend a group of externally sponsored terrorists working against peace in Balochistan.

“As soon as troops cordoned the area, terrorists tried to flee from the hideout and opened indiscriminate fire,” the army’s media wing said adding that six terrorists were killed including a BLA commander after a heavy exchange of fire.

It identified the slain BLA commander as Tariq alias Nasir besides adding that a huge cache of arms and ammunition was also recovered from the hideout.

The ISPR said that such IBOs to eliminate perpetrators of terrorist acts in Pakistan will continue and the terrorists will not be allowed to sabotage hard-earned opportunities for prosperity and socio-economic growth of the people of Balochistan.

The action came a day after a Pakistan Army’s soldier embraced martyrdom after security forces were fired upon in Kech district of the Balochistan province.

According to the ISPR, terrorists opened fire at a security forces’ check-post in district Kech and during an exchange of fire, Sepoy Muhammad Qaiser embraced martyrdom.

Jam Kamal clarifies he hasn't stepped down as Balochistan CM

Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Kamal
Reacting to rumours regarding his resignation, Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Kamal on Saturday clarified that he hasn't stepped down from the position.

Kamal wrote on Twitter: "I have not resigned and such rumours [should] not be spread."

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Balochistan Governor House said Khan's resignation has not been received, while spokesperson of the Balochistan government Liaquat Shahwani said that the news about the resignation "is not true".

Khan, on Friday night, had claimed that out of the 41 members of the Balochistan Assembly, 80% stand with him in opposition to the no-confidence motion moved against him two days prior.

Taking to Twitter, Khan claimed 80% of coalition lawmakers in the provincial assembly — including from BAP, PTI, ANP, ADP, JWP, PPP, Azad, and BNP-A — support him.

"Why do we count the Opposition as part of this coalition? If they stick to this policy, then they should announce themselves as part of the Opposition too," CM Khan wrote.

It should be recalled that on Wednesday, out of the 65 lawmakers present in the assembly, 33 had backed holding a vote of no confidence against CM Khan.

Addressing the assembly session, BAP spokesperson Abdul Rehman Khetran had demanded the release of five "missing" lawmakers with immediate effect and said that the assembly has lost its confidence in the chief minister.

"We demand Jam Kamal immediately step down from the post of the chief minister," Khetran had said. "Due to his poor governance, the province has had to witness hopelessness, disrepute, and unemployment, while the performance of different departments was also adversely affected."

Khetran further said that CM Khan, "assuming that he is the wisest of all, had been taking all decisions related to the province on his own".

"Running important matters without consultation has caused irreparable damage to the province," Khetaran maintained, adding that owing to that, assembly members demand Jam Kamal step down from his post.

Leader of the Opposition in Balochistan Assembly Malik Sikandar Advocate, while expressing his views, said that the post of the chief executive is very important as it requires the incumbent to work tirelessly for the welfare of the people.

"The chief executive is also required to solve the problems of the masses while being on the frontline," Sikandar said, adding that the incumbent is also expected to protect the national exchequer.

"The incumbent must also be able to utilise the national exchequer for the welfare of the masses as per a sound strategy. The responsibility of protecting the constitutional and legal rights of the people is also included in the duties of the chief executive," Sikandar said.

The leader of the opposition in the provincial assembly went on to say that the situation related to Sui gas in the province is suspicious because gas supply to the colder regions of the province is deliberately cut off.

"When the chief executive does not pay attention to such important issues, how will people trust him?" Sikandar questioned.

The law and order situation in the province is such that no one's life, property, or honour is safe, Sikandar said further, adding that people end up displaying the dead bodies of their loved ones outside the house of the chief executive to compel him to take action.

"There is no justice in the province and the use of resources is not carried out responsibly. Therefore, Jam Kamal has no right to continue as the chief minister of the province," Sikandar concluded his speech by saying.

Following Sikandar, Balochistan National Party (BNP) leader, Sanaullah Baloch expressed his views on the no-confidence motion and said that under the rule of CM Jam Kamal, "major corruption has taken place in Quetta Development Package as well as the fisheries sector".

"Insurgency was supposed to be reduced in Balochistan but the opposite happened and it saw a surge," Baloch said, adding that the charge sheet against CM Jam Kamal is "very long".

"Water, roads, and education projects in the province have been dedicated to Kamal's favourite people," Baloch alleged. "In my constituency, for instance, not a single project related to education was initiated."

"You have brought Balochistan on the verge of destruction but while you were in power, you did not employ efforts to make a place in the hearts of the people," Baloch said.

"How can we expect a person who does not reconcile with his own party members, to reconcile with disgruntled ones?" he said. "It is not the mistrust of the Opposition against Jam Kamal, but it is the mistrust of the people towards him."

"As a brother, I am advising you to resign from your post," Baloch said.

Pakistan look to end losing streak against India in blockbuster T20 World Cup clash today

Pakistan look to end losing streak against India in blockbuster T20 World Cup
Former champions India and Pakistan will face off today (Sunday) in a T20 World Cup blockbuster in Dubai and the buzz around the game underlines the enduring appeal of the match-up between the sub-continent's feuding neighbours.

India captain Virat Kohli and Pakistan counterpart Babar Azam have called it just another game, but that is clearly not the case.

The match will start at 7:00pm (PST).

The nuclear-armed neighbours have gone to war three times since gaining independence from British colonial rule in the mid-20th century and remain at loggerheads over Kashmir.

India last hosted Pakistan in a bilateral series in 2013 and the teams now meet only in global tournaments, the last being the 2019 ODI World Cup in England.

"I was involved in the games in 2014 and 2016. If you ask me, as a player, it was always a high-pressure game," former India player Suresh Raina wrote for the International Cricket Council (ICC) website on Saturday.

"In the build-up, everyone is just telling you how big it is."

"The fans have enjoyed this rivalry over the years and it is cricket at its best."

The 17,500 tickets for the game were sold out hours after being put on sale and television channels in both countries are running special shows on the match.

"My inbox is flooded with requests for match passes," Dubai businessman Anis Sajan, who owned a franchise in United Arab Emirates' domestic T10 tournament led by England captain Eoin Morgan, told Reuters. "I'd say an India-Pakistan match is bigger than the Ashes.

"It may have become one-sided of late but emotions run high," Sajan, vice president of the Dubai-based Danube Group, said referring to India's 12-0 record against Pakistan in cricket World Cups.

Official broadcaster Star India, which has lined up an impressive array of sponsors for the tournament, acknowledges the commercial significance of Sunday's match.

"The India-Pakistan clash is one of the biggest matchups in the world of sports," Sanjog Gupta, Head of Sports at Star and Disney India, said in a statement.

"The clash at an ICC event attracts core and casual cricket fans as well as viewers who don't watch any other cricket."

For the first time in Pakistan, marketplace and retail platform Daraz is live-streaming the World Cup on its digital platform and the response has been overwhelming.

"We have seen a massive surge in installs and daily active users on our platform," its managing director, Ehsan Saya, told Reuters.

"We are super excited to bring free streaming to Pakistanis and are confident our team will play their hearts out for our country."

The timing of the game poses a dilemma for fans like Debasish Sarkar who does not want to miss Sunday's other showdown between two arch-rivals, Manchester United and Liverpool in soccer's Premier League.

"It's a tricky choice for someone like me who's equally mad about cricket and the Premier League," Sarkar, a manager with a global cyber security software company, said from Kolkata.

"I'll most probably have the India-Pakistan match on television and follow football on my mobile. I can't afford to miss either."

Pakistan’s team

Babar Azam (captain), Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, Asif Ali, Shahdab Khan, Imad Wasim, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Haider Ali.

US, in need of pakistan permission to use airspace for Afghanistan operation

us military
The US is "nearing" a formalised agreement with Pakistan which would allow Washington to use Pakistani airspace to conduct military and intelligence operations against Afghanistan.

The report, citing three sources familiar with the details of a classified briefing held by US President Joe Biden with members of Congress, said Pakistan had expressed the desire to sign an MoU with the US government over the matter.

Islamabad, in exchange, wants assistance with its own counterterrorism efforts and help in managing the relationship with India.

However, nothing is final yet as talks between the two countries are still going on and the terms of the agreement can change.

The US, for the first time in two decades, does not have a military presence in Afghanistan as its troops pulled out of the country on August 31.

After two decades of conflict in Afghanistan, the US withdrawal from the country was criticised by several countries as a hasty one.

"The US military currently uses Pakistan's airspace to reach Afghanistan as part of ongoing intelligence-gathering efforts, but there is no formal agreement in place to ensure continued access to a critical piece of airspace necessary for the US to reach Afghanistan,"

The report said that the Pakistani airspace will become even more critical for the US if and when it decides to fly out Americans from Afghanistan in future.

A third source told CNN that the airspace deal was discussed between the two when US officials recently visited Pakistan. However, the source said, "it's not yet clear what Pakistan wants or how much the US would be willing to give in return."

Biden says US to 'defend' Taiwan in case China asserts territorial claim

US President Joe Biden
The United States will come to Taiwan's 'defense' and has a 'commitment to defend' the island China claims as its own, US President Joe Biden said on Thursday.

While the White House later clarified that the remarks did not represent any change in the US's policy towards Taiwan, they are sure to provoke a response from Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its sovereign territory.

"Yes, we have a commitment to do that," Biden said at a CNN town hall when asked if the US would come to the 'defense' of Taiwan, which has complained about Beijing's demand that it accept Chinese sovereignty.

Washington has long followed a policy of "strategic ambiguity" on whether it would intervene militarily to protect Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attempt to integrate the territory.

In August, a Biden administration official had said that US policy on Taiwan had not changed after the US president appeared to suggest the United States would intervene if it were attacked.

A White House spokesperson said Biden at his town hall was not announcing any change in US policy and "there is no change in our policy", but declined further comment when asked if Biden had misspoken.

"The US defense relationship with Taiwan is guided by the Taiwan Relations Act. We will uphold our commitment under the Act, we will continue to support Taiwan's self-defense, and we will continue to oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo," the spokesperson said.

Taiwan's presidential office, responding to Biden's remarks, said their position remains the same, which is it will neither give in to pressure nor "rashly advance" when it gets support.

Taiwan will show a firm determination to defend itself, presidential office spokesperson Xavier Chang said in a statement, noting also the Biden administration's continued concrete actions to show its "rock-solid" support for Taiwan.

China on Friday urged Washington to tread carefully on Taiwan after Joe Biden's statement.

"China has no room for compromise on issues involving its core interests," foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said, warning that Washington "should act and speak cautiously on the Taiwan issue."

Biden said people should not worry about Washington's military strength because "China, Russia and the rest of the world knows we're the most powerful military in the history of the world,"

"What you do have to worry about is whether or not they're going to engage in activities that would put them in a position where they may make a serious mistake," Biden said.

"I don't want a cold war with China. I just want China to understand that we're not going to step back, that we're not going to change any of our views."

Military tensions between Taiwan and China are at their worst in more than 40 years, Taiwan's Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng said this month.

Taiwan claims it is an independent country and will defend its freedoms and democracy.

China says Taiwan is the most sensitive and important issue in its ties with the United States and has denounced what it calls "collusion" between Washington and Taipei.

Speaking to reporters earlier on Thursday, China's United Nations Ambassador Zhang Jun said they are pursuing "peaceful reunification" with Taiwan and responding to "separatist attempts" by its ruling Democratic Progressive Party.

"We are not the troublemaker. On the contrary, some countries — the US in particular — is taking dangerous actions, leading the situation in Taiwan Strait into a dangerous direction," he said.

"I think at this moment what we should call is that the United States to stop such practice. Dragging Taiwan into a war definitely is in nobody's interest. I don't see that the United States will gain anything from that."

Gold price rises in Pakistan but local demand remains flat

psx
The gold price maintained its uptrend in the domestic market and rose by Rs1,400 to close at Rs125,600 per tola on Friday in line with the surge in the international bullion market.

Gold prices in the local bullion market jumped Rs1,201 per 10 grams to reach Rs107,682.

A day earlier, the precious commodity closed at Rs124,200 per tola and Rs106,481 per 10 grams.

Cumulatively, in the past four trading sessions, the price of gold has soared Rs7,600, according to the All Sindh Saraf and Jewellers Association.

Gold dealers suggest that prevailing uncertain economic conditions have sparked a flight from risky commodities towards safer commodities as gold is considered one of the safest investments; hence, its price is skyrocketing as investment is pouring in at a rapid pace.

As the dollar continues to strengthen day after day, investors' confidence in the currency has tumbled and they have diverted their investment to gold.

The dealers told Geo.tv that the price hike is a reflection of persistent rise in the international price of gold.

They said that the return of inflationary days in Pakistan and around the world has once again invited investors’ attention towards the yellow metal as at such a time, safer commodities turn attractive.

While the increase in prices is inviting attention from investors, it is negatively affecting the local demand, a gold dealer said on Thursday.

"We do see some seasonal demand because of the wedding season but overall, lack of purchasing power has disrupted the local demand for gold," he had added.

Gold recorded an increase of $8 to close at $1,793 per ounce in the international market as growing inflationary pressure boosted demand for the safe-haven metal.

It is pertinent to mention that the gold rates in Pakistan are around Rs500 below cost compared to the gold rate in the Dubai market.

Meanwhile, silver prices in the domestic market remained unchanged at Rs1,470 per tola and Rs1,260.28 per 10 grams today.

China angry over Taiwanese delegation's visit to eastern European countries

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin
China is angry over a Taiwanese delegation's decision to visit three eastern European countries, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Lithuania.

The 66 government officials will hold talks in Slovakia on Friday before travelling to the Czech Republic and Lithuania to boost trade ties and investment.

All three countries gave coronavirus vaccines to Taiwan, which has accused Beijing of hampering its efforts to secure enough doses.

The European Union members have shown signs of wanting closer relations with the island, even if that angers China.

Czech-Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce head Pavel Divis said in a statement the visit was "a unique opportunity for us to establish cooperation in sectors in which Taiwan is a global leader".

But the visit angered China.

"Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing China," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.

The visit also comes after President Joe Biden told a CNN town hall the United States would defend Taiwan if the island was attacked by China, a statement at odds with the long-held US policy known as "strategic ambiguity."

The Taiwan delegation will comprise Kung Ming-hsin, the national development council minister, and Wu Tsung-tsong, science and technology minister.

Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu is due to visit Prague on October 27.

Only 15 countries officially recognise Taipei rather than Beijing, which says the self-ruled democratic island as part of its territory and has vowed to one day re-take it -- by force if needed.

Beijing insists on a one-China policy that means countries cannot also give diplomatic recognition to Taiwan.

Wenbin added China "deplored and firmly opposed" such visits, threatening "universal condemnation" to countries receiving the delegation.

"We would also admonish the Taiwan authorities that any attempt to solicit foreign support and seek political manipulation is doomed to fail," he said.

Prague drew China's ire last year when a delegation of about 90 Czech politicians, entrepreneurs, scientists and journalists led by senate speaker Milos Vystrcil visited Taiwan for five days.

Lithuania in turn set up Taiwan's representative office in Vilnius under the name "Taiwan" instead of "Taipei", a move seen as a significant diplomatic departure from standard practice.

Beijing withdrew its ambassador to Lithuania and demanded Vilnius do the same, which it eventually did.

Slovakia is also considering sending a delegation to Taiwan. The plan is due to be discussed during the upcoming visit.

On Thursday, the European Parliament urged closer ties between the EU and Taiwan, calling for increased investment and slamming China over its treatment of the island.

Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine shows 90.7% efficacy in trial in children

Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine
The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine showed 90.7% efficacy against the coronavirus in a clinical trial of children 5 to 11 years old, the drugmaker said on Friday.

Sixteen children in the trial who had received a placebo got COVID-19, compared with 3 who were vaccinated, Pfizer said in briefing documents submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Because more than twice as many children in the 2,268-participant trial were given the vaccine than placebo, that equates to better than 90% efficacy.

Pfizer’s clinical trial in those 5 to 11 years old was not primarily designed to measure efficacy against the virus. Instead, it compared the amount of neutralizing antibodies induced by the vaccine in the children to the response of older recipients in their adult trial.

Based on those results, Pfizer and BioNTech said last month that their COVID-19 vaccine induced a robust immune response in the children.

The 5 to 11 year olds were given two shots of a 10-microgram dose of the vaccine, a third of the dose size given to people 12 and older.

Outside advisors to the FDA are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to vote on whether to recommend that the agency authorize the vaccine for that age group. The FDA’s staff is expected to publish their review of the evidence submitted by Pfizer later on Friday.

Pfizer also said on Friday that it had expanded its clinical trial to improve its safety data, more than doubling the number of children enrolled.

According to the briefing documents, the adverse event profile in the expanded group of kids did not suggest any new safety concerns from the vaccine. The company had said previously that the safety profile in the age group was generally comparable to 16 to 25 year olds.

The second cohort of children have been observed for a shorter time. All of them had received their second dose and more than 70% were more than two weeks post dose two.

Both the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna Inc vaccines have been linked to rare cases of heart inflammation called myocarditis, especially in young men.

Pfizer suggested that the rate of myocarditis in the age group was likely to be lower than observed in vaccinated 12 to 15 year olds. It also estimated that the number of COVID-related hospitalizations prevented by vaccination was many times the number of potential cases of myocarditis.

The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine already has U.S. regulatory authorization for people who are at least 12 years old, including full FDA approval in August for those 16 and up.

Around 190 million people in the United States are fully vaccinated, including more than 11 million who are 12 to 17 years old that have received the Pfizer vaccine.

If the FDA authorizes the vaccine for children 5 to 11 years old, a group of advisors to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will meet on Nov. 2 and 3 to make recommendations to the agency on how the shots should be administered. Most states wait for the CDC to sign off on recommendations for vaccines before they begin administering shots.

Babar Azam-led squad look to break World Cup jinx against India

Babar Azam-led squad
Babar Azam-led Pakistan squad will look to end their losing streak against India at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup when the two rivals begin their title race in a Sunday blockbuster.

India have beaten Pakistan in all of their 12 matches at the T20 and 50-over World Cups.

However, Pakistan come into the Super 12s contest with 10 wins in a row in the UAE and former Pakistan all-rounder Mudassar Nazar believes the team has struck the right balance to challenge Virat Kohli's India.

"A week ago I had apprehensions about the team but now they have made certain changes and they look a decent, well-balanced side now," Nazar told AFP.

"Pakistan stand a very good chance as they have experienced players who have played a lot against India. India start as favourites and they have all the areas covered but in T20 anybody could beat anybody on their day."

Azam, who is in top form with two T20 centuries this year, believes his team can break the World Cup jinx.

"Definitely we have played a lot of cricket in the UAE," Babar said when asked about his team's dismal 0-5 record against India in T20 World Cup clashes.

"These conditions suit us and we know how to play here. We need to keep things simple in all the departments."

The two teams last met in the 2019 ODI World Cup in England as India only plays Pakistan in multi-nation events after cutting off bilateral cricket ties with their neighbours following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

India, who have blamed Pakistan for importing terror, last hosted their neighbours in a bilateral series in 2013 during a brief thaw in their rivalry.

T20 World Cup: 'India has targeted Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan'

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan
Former Pakistani Test cricketer Iqbal Qasim said Friday that since "India has targeted Pakistani skipper Babar Azam and batsman Mohammad Rizwan", Pakistan has to do the same to the Indian squad.

"The entire Indian cricket team plays impressive cricket," he said.

Qasim spoke out against the recent changes made in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), adding that they will prove harmful for the cricket team.

He said only Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez "can handle the pressure of a big match" saying that their presence in the T20 World Cup squad was a big relief.

Referring to former head coach Misbah-ul-Haq and bowling coach Waqar Younis, he said the cricketers "who selected the team for the World Cup" are not with the squad anymore.

He wondered why no one in the PCB management gave it a thought as to what would happen once Misbah and Waqar leave.

The former cricketer said Pakistan is an "unpredictable" team when it comes to results. He refused to predict the India-Pakistan match outcome, saying that it is not "easy" to do so.

South Korea launches first local space rocket, but fails to put payload in orbit

South Korea launches first local space rocket
South Korea launched its first domestically developed space rocket on Thursday but failed to put its dummy payload into orbit, a setback in the country’s attempts to join the ranks of advanced space-faring nations.

The Korea Space Launch Vehicle II, informally called Nuri and emblazoned with a South Korean flag, rose upwards from Goheung on the southern coast, trailing a column of flame.

All three stages of the rocket worked, taking it to an altitude of 700 kilometres, and the 1.5-tonne payload separated successfully, President Moon Jae-in said after watching the launch at the control centre.

But “putting a dummy satellite into orbit remains an unfinished mission”, he announced.

“Though it fell short of achieving its goals perfectly, we have achieved very good feats with our first launch.” Another attempt will be made in May, he added.

“Countries that lead in space technology will lead the future. And we are not too late to do it.”

The mission failed because the third-stage engine stopped burning 46 seconds earlier than scheduled, science minister Lim Hye-sook told reporters. Cheering and applause had earlier broken out in the control centre as the flight seemed to proceed according to plan.

South Korea has risen from the ashes of war to become the world’s 12th-largest economy and a technologically advanced nation, home to the planet’s biggest smartphone and memory chip maker, Samsung Electronics.

But it has lagged in the headline-making world of spaceflight, where the Soviet Union led the way with the first satellite launch in 1957, closely followed by the United States.

In Asia, China, Japan and India all have advanced space programmes, and the South’s nuclear-armed neighbour North Korea was the most recent entrant to the club of countries with their own satellite launch capability. Ballistic missiles and space rockets use similar technology and Pyongyang put a 300-kilogramme satellite into orbit in 2012 in what Western countries condemned as a disguised missile test.

Even now, only six nations — not including North Korea — have successfully launched a one-tonne payload on their own rockets.

Punjab govt forms committee for talks with TLP ahead of 'long march to capital'

CM Punjab Usman Buzdar
The Punjab government on Friday formed a committee comprising provincial Law Minister Raja Basharat and Prosecution Minister Chaudhry Zaheeruddin for talks with the banned Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) ahead of the latter's expected long march to the capital.

Announcing the long march on Islamabad a day earlier, TLP leader Pir Ajmal Qadri had said the "peaceful" procession would begin after Friday prayers. "If any hurdles are created, the party also has a Plan B to thwart any official attempts," he had told a charged crowd at a protest site in Lahore.

In what appeared to be a change of heart, the group had delinked the march from the release of its incarcerated leader, Saad Hussain Rizvi, and said the purpose of the move was "respect for the Holy Prophet (PBUH)".

However, shortly after 4pm on Friday, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar announced that a committee comprising the two senior members of the provincial cabinet had been formed to negotiate with the proscribed group.

The chief minister said that according to the Sunnah of Holy Prophet (PBUH), "we all need to work together for peace and harmony in the country".

On Thursday, Qadri had advised workers to continue the mission of the group's founder, the late Khadim Hussain Rizvi, even if "we are martyred in the march", and asked the government to implement the agreement — a reference to the accord reached with the TLP last November to sever diplomatic and economic ties with France.

"The government better implement the agreement in true spirit or get ready to face the consequences," Qadri had warned.

Arrangements in Lahore

Meanwhile, Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Muntazir Mehdi said in a statement that traffic flow was as per usual on all entry and exit points of the city as well as on Ferozepur Road, Jail Road, Wahdat Road, Mall Road and Canal Road.

He said that traffic also remained unaffected in Chungi Amar Sadhu, Thokar Niaz Baig, Chung and Mohlanwal areas, as well as on GT Road.

However, roads connecting Babu Sabu to Scheme Morr and Scheme Morr to Yateem Khana Chowk have been closed for traffic, while a protest by blind persons is under way at Secretariat Chowk, he said.

Citizens can contact the 15 helpline for more information, he added.

Arrangements in Islamabad

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Islamabad Traffic Police said traffic was diverted from Rawalpindi's System Road and Ninth Avenue and advised residents who wanted to go to Pindi via the Faizabad Interchange — which has been blocked during TLP protests in the past as well — or Ninth Avenue to use the IJP Road instead.

"Diversion has been placed for both sides of traffic at Murree Road, Faizul Islam stop, from and to Faizabad. Alternatively, traffic going from Islamabad to Murree Road, Rawalpindi, is diverted to Islamabad Highway.

"Diversion has been placed for both sides of traffic from Express Chowk to D-Chowk at Jinnah Avenue. Alternatively, Nadra Chowk and Ayub Chowk can be used for entry and exit to the Red Zone," according to the statement.

In addition, diversion has been placed for traffic from Islamabad Highway to IJP Rd at Sohan Stop. The traffic is diverted instead to Faisal Avenue, the statement added.

The metro bus service was suspended in Rawalpindi but was running from the stop on IJP Road to the Pakistan Secretariat, the spokesperson said.

Police sources said 24 TLP workers were arrested ahead of the march while officers who were on leave were called back to duty.

Senior police officers said that about three dozen containers had been arranged to put on different roads, including Islamabad Expressway, to stop the TLP from entering the capital or staging a sit-in at Faizabad Interchange.

The containers were being brought to the Faizabad Interchange and put on the roads at midnight. Besides, well-equipped police personnel were deployed in and around the interchange.

Police were also deputed at the entry point of the capital at Tarnol, Rawat and Bhara Kahu. Moreover, containers were arranged to block the roads at these three points but a final direction was awaited from the higher authorities.

Over 2,000 police officials are being deployed at the main points, including the entry points, to counter the TLP's march, the officers said.

The police lines headquarters released 1,500 anti-riot gear kits for the contingents to be deployed.

Arrangements in Rawalpindi

Meanwhile, the Rawalpindi Traffic Police completed arrangements to deal with the long march. In a statement, it said Murree Road and Rawal Road have been closed for commuters while Old Airport Road and Mall Road are open.

Additional policemen have been posted at the High Court Chowk and Mall Road to ensure the smooth flow of traffic, it said.

The district administration sealed Gawalmandi, Saddar Road and Kamran Market areas.

Protests in Lahore

The TLP had resumed protests in Lahore earlier this week by staging a massive sit-in on Multan Road near its headquarters at Masjid Rehmatul-lil-Aalemeen.

Hundreds of activists and workers of the proscribed TLP participated in the sit-in to put pressure on the Punjab government for the release of its chief.

Rizvi is detained by the Punjab government since April 12 for "maintenance of public order (MPO)". He was initially detained for three months and then again under the Anti-Terrorist Act on July 10. A federal review board is scheduled to take up the government's reference against him on Oct 23.

A division bench of the LHC is yet to be constituted to hear an appeal of the government against a decision of a single bench that had set aside the detention of the TLP leader. The Supreme Court had on Oct 12 suspended the operations of the single bench's order and remanded the case for a fresh decision by a division bench.

A day earlier, the Punjab police allegedly detained over 1,000 activists and workers of the TLP during a crackdown that was intensified across the province after the group announced the long march.

The mayor of Rawalpindi, Sardar Naseem Khan, on Thursday took charge of his office on the directive of the Supreme Court.

The mayor, who is also the PML-N metropolitan president, was initially given the cold shoulder by bureaucracy when he arrived in the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC).

However, after issuance of a notification restoring the mayor’s administrative powers, they met him and assured him of full support.

Accompanied by union council chairmen, including those belonging to the PTI and PPP, the mayor arrived in his office and took charge.

PML-N workers on the occasion chanted ‘Long live Nawaz Sharif’ and ‘Long live Shehbaz Sharif’ slogans.

Says development plans will be launched on proposals of UC chairmen

The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Punjab government had dissolved the local bodies constituted under the Punjab Local Government Act (PLGA) 2013 in May 2019.

The Supreme Court restored the local governments in Punjab in March in a short order and issued the detail judgment in July. But the Punjab government did not restore the local governments. Upon this, the apex court started contempt of court proceedings against the provincial government and the bureaucracy for creating hurdles in the restoration of the LG system. In response, on October 17, the provincial government restored the local governments.

RMC Chief Municipal Officer Ali Abbas Bukhari said that the government has issued a notification asking the local government employees to report to their head of departments. He said it also restored all the administrative powers of the elected representatives.

Meanwhile, Mayor Khan announced the resumption of the process of development in the garrison city.

He thanked the PPP and PTI union council chairmen for extending support to the PML-N to get the local government system restored in the province.

There are 40 union council chairmen belonging to PML-N while PPP and the PTI have two each.

Talking to media, the mayor said the local government system was restored on the directives of the Supreme Court.

He said as the first priority, an anti-dengue campaign will be launched in all the 46 union councils which would be supervised by the UC chairmen.

“Now the public representatives will carry out development work,” he said.

The mayor directed RMC officials to present him a report on the budget, staff and working of the RMC.

“We will complete all the unfinished work without wasting time,” he said.

He said in the absence of the local body representatives, development schemes were launched on the directives of the PTI members of the national and provincial assemblies.

“Development plans will be restructured and development schemes will be launched on the proposals of the UC chairmen. The schemes implemented so far by the PTI lawmakers will be declared illegal,” said the mayor.

In the afternoon, the government issued a new notification restoring the administrative powers of the mayor. After this, the chief municipal officer along with other officials met the mayor in his office.

FATF once again retains Pakistan on grey list

FATF once again retains Pakistan on grey list
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) on Thursday announced that it is retaining Pakistan on the grey list.

President Dr Marcus Pleyer is addressing a post-plenary conference. Dr Pleyer announced that Pakistan remains on the "increased monitoring list".

According to the president, Pakistan has two concurrent action plans with a total of 34 action plan items. "It has now addressed, or largely addressed 30 of the items," he said.

"It's most recent action plan from June this year which largely focused on money laundering deficiencies was issued after FATF's regional partner APG (Asian Pacific Group) identified a number of serious issues.

Overall, Pakistan is making "good progress" on the new action plan, he said, adding that of the 7 new items, four have been "addressed or largely addressed".

He said this includes showing that financial supervisors are conducting on-site and off-site checks on non-financial sector businesses and inacting legislative amendments to improve international cooperation.

Dr Pleyer also spoke of Pakistan's earlier action plan, dating back to June 2018, and which focuses on terrorist financing issues, "Pakistan is still assessed to have largely addressed 26 out of 27 items".

He said Pakistan still needs to demonstrate investigations and prosecutions are being pursued against the senior leadership of UN designated terror groups.

"I thank the Pakistani government for their continued strong commitment to this process."

The FATF held a meeting in Paris which began on October 19 and concludes today, October 21.

As per reports, the task force reviewed the Asia Pacific Group's report on Pakistan's compliance with the watchdog's prescribed action items.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan has been on the FATF’s increased monitoring list, known as the grey list, since June 2018.

During the meeting, the global watchdog finalised key reports, including the revised guidance on virtual assets and their service providers, and discussed the next steps to strengthen its standards on transparency of beneficial ownership.

PPP clarifies Bilawal's 'anti media' remarks, says they were taken out of context

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
The PPP has clarified that a part of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's speech at a Sunday rally at Karachi’s Bagh-e-Jinnah was in no way targeted at the media, adding that the people should "understand the context of a statement instead of believing in propaganda".

PPP issued a video for clarification containing a bit from Bilawal's speech from the rally, where he appeals to Pakistanis to "not fall for the media's character assassination".

The video clarifies that Bilawal's statement was misunderstood — he did not mean that the media was indulging in character assassination, but that the media was being targeted and discredited, and the people should not accept it.

The video also referred to another statement made by Bilawal, where he said: "You should not follow those who bark against the PPP".

For this, the PPP clarified that this statement was not directed towards the media, but those trolls who target the PPP with false assertions.

"Some elements are trying to misinterpret Bilawal's speech in a way that has no connection with the reality," said the statement.

Earlier, PPP leader Sherry Rehman had taken to Twitter, "hoping that the misunderstanding" regarding Bilawal's speech had been cleared.

She had retweeted journalist Mazhar Abbas's Tweet condemning Bilawal's "remarks against the media".

"I hope the misunderstanding has been cleared. @BBhuttoZardari was talking about the political trolls who spout hate speech as a norm in the media. He was certainly not taking a pot shot at the media," wrote Rehman.
