Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation urged to rescind its award for Narendra Modi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bill Gates
Three Nobel Prize Laureates have demanded of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to rescind its award to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for blatant basic human rights violations in occupied Kashmiri, attacks on minorities in India and his role in horrific massacre of Gujarat.

In their joint letter addressed to Foundation, Mairead Maguire, Tawakkol Abdel-Salam Karman, and Shirin Ebadi expressed their serious reservations.

They said under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India has descended into dangerous and deadly chaos that has consistently undermined human rights, democracy.

This is particularly troubling to us as the stated mission of your foundation is to preserve life and fight inequity,” they added.

The situation in the state of Assam and Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir is cause for grave concern as well.

“The organization “Genocide Watch” has issued not one, but two alerts for India in these regions.

In Assam, 1.9 million Indians have been stripped of citizenship; in Kashmir, since August, 800,000 Indian armed forces have kept eight million Kashmiris without phone or internet service for the last month,” they added.

They further said because of these human rights abuses, children in Occupied Kashmir from Kindergarten to college are unable to attend school.

They also referred to the attacks on minorities, specifically Indian Muslims, Christians, and Dalits.

They requested the Foundation to rescind its award to Modi because by doing so, they would send a clear and powerful message that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation took its aim of equity, justice, and human rights for all seriously – and that it was committed to promoting these values in a consistent fashion.

UK teen arrested for allegedly selling music for cryptocurrency

UK teen arrested for allegedly selling music for cryptocurrency
British police said Friday they had arrested a 19-year-old man for stealing unreleased songs from musicians´ websites and cloud-based accounts, as part of a US-led investigation.

The teenager, who was arrested in Ipswich in eastern England, is also suspected of selling the stolen music in exchange for cryptocurrency, according to a statement from the City of London Police intellectual property crime unit.

A raid was also carried out on a property in London.

The Manhattan District Attorney´s office launched the investigation following referrals from the management companies of recording artists who had been targeted.

Police also said they had used information received from IFPI, the body representing the global recording industry, without giving further details on the artists.

"This sort of crime causes significant financial loss to those who work so incredibly hard to produce, write and make music for their fans to enjoy," Detective Inspector Nick Court from the City of London Police said in a statement.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said New York was "dedicated to protecting artists´ intellectual property and ensuring that those who steal it face the music".

British band Radiohead in June released an 18-hour trove of private recordings from their 1997 album "OK Computer" after getting hacked by someone seeking a $150,000 ransom for the music´s return.

The genre-bending English musicians uploaded the 1.8-gigabyte collection of recording session outtakes and rare live performances on their radiohead.bandcamp.com website, where it is accessible for free.

EU parliament members call for trade, travel sanctions on India

European Union Parliament
Members of the European Union Parliament on Friday called for trade and travel sanctions on India over the alarming human rights situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

According to reports, the Co-Chair of the Friends of Kashmir Group in the EU parliament, Richard Corbett, called for utilizing all possible means to mount pressure on India to ease the military curfew in occupied Kashmir.

He proposed the imposition of trade sanctions on New Delhi and restrictions on the travel of those involved in committing human rights violations and acts of terrorism in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

Corbett was speaking to a conference jointly organized by Friends of Kashmir Group in the European Parliament and the Jammu-Kashmir Self-Determination Movement at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The Friends of Kashmir group also proposed that a resolution be presented in the EU regarding the situation in the occupied valley. Last month, members of this group had visited Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

During the visit, the EU members had a chance to meet the victims of unprovoked attacks from India on the Line of Control, and the relatives of those who had lost their lives in these attacks.

The group also met a wide range of civil society members on the visit, including journalists, physicians, teachers, students and lawyers to collect firsthand information about the area.

They called upon the Indian government to provide a similar kind of access in Indian-occupied Kashmir so as to independently verify claims about lack of food, medicines and other items in the occupied valley.

Those who spoke at the conference on occupied Kashmir included Anthea McIntyre, Shaffaq Mohammed, John Howarth, Irena Von Weise, Theresa Griffin and Raja Najabat Hussain.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir President Sardar Masood Khan was also present on the occasion, and welcome the decision of the European Parliament to hold a debate on the situation in occupied Kashmir.

Khan said that the decisions reflected growing concern in Europe over the deteriorating human rights situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir, and warned about prolonged siege turning into genocide.

He said all the developments in the Indian-occupied territory fit into the definition and criteria of genocide and called for swift action by the international community to intervene and prevent a catastrophe.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had revoked the constitutional autonomy of occupied Kashmir on August 5 and imposed a military curfew in the valley, imprisoning thousands of Kashmiris.

PPP demands fresh elections as Karachi row heats up

PPP leader Raza Rabbani
The Pakistan People Party (PPP) on Friday called for fresh elections in the country amid tensions with the federal government over administrative affairs of Karachi.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, PPP leader Raza Rabbani and Sindh Information Minister Saeed Ghani said that talk of invoking Article 149 in Karachi would have grave consequences.

The two PPP leaders said that the constitution only allowed the federal government to advise the provincial authorities under Article 149, and talks of federal government intervening directly in Karachi were illegal.

Referring to earlier statements made by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government officials, PPP leader Raza Rabbani warned that there would be strong implications if Sindh was divided.

"There are lots of states in India that have special status. The fall back in India could harm Pakistan as well. Those who are thinking about article 149 should keep the regional context in mind," Rabbani said.

Rabbani was referring to the August 5 annexation of Indian-occupied Kashmir by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the military curfew which had followed it, sparking global outrage.

Earlier today, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had said that the centre would not interfere in the workings of the Sindh government.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Qureshi assured parliamentarians from Sindh that the federal government would not let any harm come in the way of provincial autonomy.

“Our MNAs from Sindh should not have any concerns,” Qureshi said.

Criticising Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Zardari, Qureshi said it was the beginning of Bilawal's political career and the PPP chief should be careful about what he says. “I do not have doubts about Bilawal’s patriotism, but he should exercise caution while speaking on such matters.”

Sarfaraz retained as Pakistan captain, Babar named vice-captain

Sarfaraz Ahmed
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said Friday it was retaining Sarfaraz Ahmed as the captain of the Pakistani team, whereas Babar Azam was named the vice-captain for the upcoming Sri Lanka series.

The series, wherein Sarfaraz will lead Pakistan, comprises three one-day international (ODI) and three Twenty20 international (T20I) matches against Sri Lanka and is slated to be held from September 27 to October 9.

PCB chairperson Ehsan Mani confirmed the appointments, the cricket regulatory authority said in a press release issued Friday. The decisions were made "following recommendations made by Pakistan head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq and the PCB Cricket Committee".

In this regard, Sarfaraz said he was "humbled and honoured" for the extension and added: "I have enjoyed captaining the Pakistan cricket team and look forward to improve my leadership qualities under the new set-up of Misbah-ul-Haq who also has a proven record as captain."

Highlighting having played cricket under Misbah, the chief selector, Sarfaraz further noted: “I think we will make a good combination, which will contribute to improved performances of the side across all formats.

“I am aware we have not done justice to our potential in ODIs, which has disappointed us as well as our fans. I am hopeful we will be able to turn things around in the coming season and in this relation.

"I remain committed to stepping up to the challenge with my performances and captaincy. I have complete faith in my team, which has time and again shown talent, class and charisma it possesses.

"The only thing missing has been consistency, which Misbah and I would like to focus and improve across all departments of the game. I assure all our fans we will not leave any stone unturned in our preparations for the forthcoming assignments and will do our best to translate these preparations into solid performances,” the captain added.

Terming Sarfaraz "an experienced campaigner", Mani, the PCB chair, said the captain "has excelled and improved as a leader with every match".

He noted: "I have complete faith in his abilities and I am confident he will continue to blossom under Misbah’s wings. We have appointed Babar Azam as Sarfaraz’s vice-captain. This is part of Babar’s gradual development as a future captain and in line with our strategy of introducing a succession plan across the board so that there are no gaps.

"I am hopeful the trio of Misbah, Sarfaraz and Babar will do well for Pakistan cricket,” he added.

Misbah-ul-Haq, on the other hand, congratulated Sarfaraz and Babar on their appointments, saying: "Both are one of the most talented and exceptionally gifted Pakistan cricketers and thoroughly deserve these assignments.

“Consistency backed up by good performance has been my yardstick for recommending Sarfaraz as captain. Furthermore, I think I am better placed to get the best out of Sarfaraz as I know him better than most of the cricketers as he has played most of his cricket under my captaincy.

"I have always been an admirer of his commitment and the energy he brings to the side.

“I have emphasised on changing the dressing room culture and mind-set of the players to achieve better results, and I believe Sarfaraz is a perfect fit to help me attain these objectives.

“In the past couple of weeks, Sarfaraz and I have worked together on certain areas of his cricket that will enhance his overall performance. Both of us realise it is a performance-oriented world and we are expected to give our best every time we take the field.

"I look forward to working with him and hope we will succeed in changing the outlook of the Pakistan cricket team,” he noted.

Squad and training

Separately, 19 players likely to be added to the team for the Sri Lanka series would be announced on Monday. The training camp, on the other hand, "will commence at the National Cricket Academy from Wednesday, 18 September", the PCB said.

It added: "The 16-player ODI and T20I squads will be named on Monday, 23 September."

Sarfaraz was appointed as the captain of the Pakistan team for the T20Is in April 2016 before being promoted as the ODI captain in early 2017. Subsequently, he was named captain across all formats.

He has has captained the Pakistan team in 13 Test, 48 ODI, and 34 T20I matches, winning four, 26, and 29 matches, respectively.

However, Babar Azam — ranked 16th in Tests, third in ODIs, and No. 1 in T20Is — captained Pakistan earlier in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2012.

Babar also featured in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2010 before entering the international cricket scene in 2015 and has since regularly featured in all formats.

Afghan Taliban send warning to Trump in bitter exchange

Afghan Taliban send warning to Trump in bitter exchange
The war of words between the Taliban and President Donald Trump escalated Thursday as the Afghan insurgents warned that the US leader had failed to grasp "what type of nation he is dealing with".

The latest salvo in the bitter exchange comes a day after Trump boasted during a 9/11 anniversary ceremony that US forces have "hit our enemy harder than they have ever been hit before and that will continue" just days after peace talks between the two sides collapsed.

"Trump (@realDonaldTrump) must tread carefully," tweeted Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

"He has yet to grasp the type of nation he is dealing with. His advisers must make him understand & introduce the Graveyard of Empires #Afghanistan to him."

Until this weekend there had been steadily mounting expectations of a deal that would see the US drawdown troop levels in Afghanistan.

In return, the Taliban would offer security guarantees to keep extremist groups out.

But then on Saturday, Trump revealed on Twitter that he had cancelled an unprecedented meeting between the Taliban and himself at Camp David and later said the talks with the militants were "dead".

The Taliban spokesman's tweet comes just hours after the group launched a suicide attack that killed at least four soldiers near Kabul, as the insurgents ramp up attacks on security forces.

The incident occurred at a special forces base in Char Asiab district just south of the capital Kabul where an insurgent driving a car packed with explosives detonated near the facility´s entrance.

"Four soldiers were killed, and three injured," said interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi.

Afghan special forces — numbering around 17,000 — represent a small fraction of the 300,000 strong Afghan armed forces but have been carrying out the bulk of offensive operations across Afghanistan in recent years.

As fears of increased violence soared with presidential elections approaching later this month, Afghan troops and Taliban insurgents have been engaged in heavy exchanges across Afghanistan, with several militant-controlled districts in the far north falling to government forces.

However, the Taliban continue to strike Afghan installations at will after the militants issued their own vow earlier in the week to continue fighting and make the US regret walking away from talks.

New Zealand tightens gun laws again after mosque massacre

New Zealand tightens gun laws again after mosque massacre
New Zealand unveiled new legislation on Friday aimed at ensuring only “fit and proper” people can own guns in the wake of the Christchurch mosque attacks that killed 51 Muslim worshippers.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had immediately banned military style semi-automatic rifles after the shootings in March but said further restrictions were needed to target the black market.

“Owning a firearm is a privilege not a right,” she told reporters in Christchurch on Friday.

“That means we need to do all we can to ensure that only honest, law-abiding citizens are able to obtain firearms licences and use firearms.”

Under the new legislation, a registry will be set up that is designed to track ownership of every legally owned firearm in the country. The measure also increases the jail term for supplying firearms to an unlicensed person from three months to two years, as well as tightening gun importation and sales.

Police will determine if someone is “fit and proper” to hold a licence, with power to exclude anyone promoting extremism, convicted of violent crime or with mental health issues, including attempted suicide.

The registry, expected to take five years to complete, will contain details of the estimated 1.2 million firearms in New Zealand, for a population of around five million.

New Zealand Police Minister Stuart Nash said the existing gun legislation was introduced in 1983 and needed updating.

The alleged Christchurch gunman Brenton Tarrant legally obtained an arsenal of rifles before embarking on the worst mass shooting in New Zealand's modern history.

The self-avowed white supremacist is accused of opening fire at two mosques while livestreaming his actions on social media. He has pleaded not guilty to 51 counts of murder, 40 of attempted murder and engaging in a terrorist act.

In addition to the semi-automatic ban, the first round of gun law reforms included a firearms buyback scheme allowing the public to hand in weapons before a six-month amnesty expires.

The Christchurch killings rocked New Zealand and Ardern's gun reforms have been generally accepted in the South Pacific nation. There has been some opposition, including from the conservative ACT Party, which said law-abiding firearms owners were not receiving a fair hearing.

“We also oppose a gun register because such an exercise will cost a significant sum of taxpayer money but will not capture the criminals and gang members who hold firearms,” ACT leader David Seymour said.

Education Minister asks provincial governments to keep check on private schools

Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood
Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood warned all private schools across the country against raising their tuition fees more than the limit set by Supreme Court of Pakistan.

In a news conference on Friday, the minister told that he has asked all provincial governments to keep a check on private schools in this regard and practice their due authority in taking action against such institutions, which were violating the order of the apex court.

In December last year, the then chief justice Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar had ordered all private schools across Pakistan to cut down their fees by 20%. “A hike in fees above five percent will only be allowed with the permission of the regulator,” Justice Nisar had clarified.

Mr Mehmood also noted that complaints were often received that private schools also charge for different purposes like school copies and other co-curricular activities, “this will not be acceptable,” he stressed.

Levying a tax on fees collected by schools is also on the cards, the minister added.

He reiterated his warning to all private schools saying: “Don’t even increase your fees by one rupee above the limitation fixed by Supreme Court,” otherwise, strict action would be taken against the violators.

US to ban flavored vaping products as lung disease cases surge

Donald Trump´s administration announced it would soon ban flavored vaping products,
Donald Trump´s administration on Wednesday announced it would soon ban flavored vaping products, amid a growing outbreak of severe lung disease linked to e-cigarette use that has claimed six lives.

Addressing reporters at the White House, the US president said he and First Lady Melania Trump were worried as parents about the wave of illnesses that has sickened hundreds and left several teens in induced comas.

"We are both reading it," he said. "A lot of people are reading, people are dying of vaping," he added, vowing to act.

Trump was accompanied by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, who responded to a question over the timeline of the ban by saying his agency would issue rules in the coming weeks.

Following the release of new guidance, "there will likely be about a 30-day delayed effective date," said Azar. "At that point, all flavored e-cigarettes other than tobacco flavor would have to be removed from the market."

The agency said in a release that non-tobacco flavors were being targeted for their appeal to adolescents, with preliminary data for 2019 showing that more than a quarter of high school students had used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days and the overwhelming majority reported using fruit, menthol or mint flavors.

Tobacco flavors are seen as more legitimate product to help smokers quit tobacco-based cigarettes, but manufacturers will still need to apply for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval by May 2020 if they want to continue selling these products.

But Azar also tweeted that the ban could even be extended to include these flavors. "If data show kids migrating to tobacco-flavored products, we will do what´s necessary to tackle continued youth use of these products," he wrote.

The news was a major blow to the burgeoning vaping industry, worthx globally in 2018, according to Grand View Research.

It comes as concern grows over how more than 450 people who reported recent use of e-cigarettes have fallen ill, with symptoms including breathing difficulty and chest pain before some were hospitalized and placed on ventilators.

Several teens across the country have been placed in medically induced comas including one whose doctors said he may require a lung transplant if he recovers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has urged people to cease vaping while the investigation is underway.

- Mystery illness -

Federal authorities have yet to identify a single substance common to all cases, but New York´s health department is focusing its probe on counterfeit cannabis cartridges containing vitamin E oil, which is harmful when inhaled.

E-cigarettes have been available in the US since 2006 and were widely considered a safer alternative to traditional smoking, even though experts had warned even before the current outbreak that it may take decades to learn about vaping´s long-term effects.

It´s also not clear why the US is so far alone in reporting such cases, and whether they are even new, or only being recognized now by medics after earlier misdiagnoses.

Whatever the case, wider public and political opinion appears to be hardening.

Trump´s announcement received bipartisan support, including from his longtime Republican critic and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, and several Democrats including Senate whip Dick Durbin, who commended the FDA for "doing its job."

The FDA on Monday warned market-leading e-cigarette maker JUUL to stop advertising itself as a less harmful alternative to smoking, saying the company had broken the law in its marketing.

But shares in Altria, which holds a one-third stake in JUUL, were up 0.5 percent by 2:30 pm (1830 GMT), following the announcement.

Iran will cut more JCPOA commitments if necessary: Rouhani

President Hassan Rouhani
President Hassan Rouhani says Iran will take further steps towards suspending its commitments under a 2015 nuclear deal in the future if it deems necessary.

Rouhani made the remarks during a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday, a few days after Iran activated a chain of advanced centrifuges as part of the third phase of reductions in its obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The president described the third step as the most important one compared to the previous two steps, adding, “If necessary, we will take further steps in the future.”

He highlighted the peaceful utilization of nuclear technology as Iran's principle, adding that if the remaining signatories to the JCPOA “fulfill their commitments, we will do the same, and if they violate it, we will also do so.”

In compliance with Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, Iran has, since May, gone through three stages in scaling back parts of its commitments in retaliation for Washington’s withdrawal from the accord and Europe’s failure to protect Iran against the sanctions that the US re-imposed on the country in the aftermath of its exit.

Iran has given another two months to the European signatories to take meaningful action to save the JCPOA as a France-led diplomatic process is underway between the two sides.

Tehran says its reciprocal measures will be reversible as soon as Europe finds practical ways to shield the Iranian economy from unilateral US bans.

Elsewhere in his comments, Rouhani slammed the “maximum pressure” campaign that the US has unleashed against Iran ever since it abandoned the JCPOA.

“While the enemy is exerting maximum pressure [on Iran], our path is withstanding and resistance,” said Rouhani, adding that the US would better stop the belligerent pressure campaign and set aside “warmongering” and “warmongers.”

“The Americans must understand that they will not benefit from bellicosity and warmongering. [Such policies] must be abandoned,” the president said.
