The official had shared that Karachi’s weather will remain cold and dry for the next couple of days with the mercury ranging between 7 and 9 degrees.

Pakistani rupee expected to extend upward trend against US dollar next week

Pakistani rupee expected to extend upward trend against US dollar next week
Due to lesser dollar demand from importers, traders suggest that the rupee is expected to add minor gains next week with healthy dollar inflows also supporting the local unit.

Traders said the present positive sentiment about the country’s economic outlook in the market would lend support to the local unit.

In this regard, a foreign exchange trader with a leading commercial bank said: “We anticipate the rupee to extend its upward trend against the dollar, helped by a flat appetite for the hard currency from imports for payments and increased inflows from remittances and official sources.”

“The rupee should trade at 159 level per dollar in the coming week.”

In the interbank market, the rupee gained 38 paisas to close the outgoing week at 160.09 versus the greenback, the report highlighted.

“The outlook for the domestic currency, as we head towards the end of the month, is that of stability,” another dealer said, adding that if some import payments are pending, these will be easily covered by the inflows available in the market.

The rupee is likely to trade range-bound over the next week. The local currency can see ups and downs in trading sessions, depending on the import payments, but largely the local unit seems to move slightly upward, dealers added.

Remittances from Pakistani expatriates rose 26.9% in July and November
Meanwhile, remittances from Pakistani expatriates climbed up to 26.9% to $11.7 billion in July-November of the fiscal year 2020/21.

Moreover, the inward remittances from overseas Pakistanis into Roshan Digital Account stood at $154.6 million, with $88.7 million invested in Naya Pakistan Certificates so far.

Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves slightly declined to $20.379 billion during the week that ended December 11 from $20.402 billion a week ago.

Whereas, the foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan as of December 11 remained flat at $13.298 billion.

Moreover, the potential dollar inflows from bilateral and multilateral sources will lend support to the local currency in the near-term.

Traders’ sentiments boosted
Positive data on industrial output boosted traders’ sentiment. This signals the country’s economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic gaining momentum.

Data issued by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) showed that large-scale manufacturing (LSM) output grew 3.95 percent in October, compared with September.

“LSM output grew 6.66% for October, compared with October 2019, the PBS data showed,” read the report.

On the other hand, Japan has extended grant assistance of one billion Japanese yen (around $9.5 million) to Pakistan for enhancing its capacity to confront COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.

The government repaid $1 billion of the total $2 billion loans to Saudi Arabia. The next installment is scheduled for January 2020.

Gas shortage adversely impacts business and domestic life in Pakistan

Gas shortage across many cities of the country is proving to be troublesome for citizens as gas stations continue to close and appliances requiring gas to function remain useless for hours.

Sindh and Balochistan have both announced the closure of gas stations across the provinces as the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) had stated earlier that supply would remain suspended during two days of the week .

"The decision was taken in light of the availability of gas," the SSGC had said Friday, adding that supply to industries will be slashed by 50%.

The supply to the CNG stations in KP has also been suspended for four days while the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited says it won't be supplying gas to the Punjab CNG stations indefinitely for now.

In Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and other small cities and towns of the country, many families have been left freezing and hungry in the harsh winter as they remain without gas or are being supplied gas at very low pressure.

In Quetta, low gas pressure was reported in Raisani Town, Arif Road, Mir Ahmad Khan Road, Najamuddin Road, Kawari Road and adjoining areas.

Officials of the SSGC, however, are saying Balochistan is getting all the gas it needs.. SSGC General Manager Madni Siddiqui said Balochistan is getting 200mmcfd of gas according to its requirement, explaining that the low pressure of gas in certain parts of the province was due to the use of compressors.

The government has arranged 12 LNG cargoes for January 2021, a statement by the Petroleum Division spokesperson read. He said additional LNG has also been arranged in some cargoes.

In Punjab, residents say they are forced to buy the expensive LPG due to non-supply of gas. Mosques, homes, flats and businesses remain without warmth as gas supply remains suspended in many parts of the province.

Last week, the SSGC had temporarily suspended gas supply across seven areas in Karachi on a Sunday.Earlier this month, it was reported that a major gas crisis is expected in Pakistan after no bids were received for the first time from LNG suppliers for the first half of January

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar, assured masses by saying the government has a plan to deal with the crisis.

Adelaide: Indian batting line-up collapsed like a house of cards

Adelaide: Indian batting line-up collapsed like a house of cards
Indian batting line-up collapsed like a house of cards on Saturday when they all bundled out at their lowest ever Test score of 36 in Adelaide.

India started day three of the day-night Test on nine for one and with a 62-run lead, looking to build a competitive second innings total for Australia to chase.

But their hopes were left in tatters after an exhibition of fast bowling by Josh Hazlewood (5-8) and Pat Cummins (4-21).

India’s previous Test low was 42 against England at Lord’s in 1974. Their 36 was the joint fourth lowest of all time with New Zealand’s 26 against England in 1955 at Auckland the worst ever.

Their capitulation left Australia needing 90 to win, with Joe Burns and Matthew Wade knocking off 15 of them before the dinner break.

Cummins wasted no time removing nightwatchman Jasprit Bumrah for two in the second over of the day, temping him to push at a slower ball that popped back up to him.

That brought the stubborn Cheteshwar Pujara to the crease. He saw off an over from Cummins, but that was as good as it got for the veteran who fell without scoring.

Cummins, the world’s number one Test bowler, sent down a delivery that had to be played and Pujara caught an edge that carried to Tim Paine behind the stumps.

It left India on 15 for three, and it only got worse with opener Mayank Agarwal back in the pavillon five balls later for nine, again caught by Paine on Josh Hazlewood’s opening delivery.

Hazlewood and Paine again combined to get rid of Ajinkya Rahane for nought then Cummins picked up the massive wicket of Virat Kohli.

The superstar batsman had smacked Cummins for four but was gone the next ball after a review, caught by Cameron Green as he attempted a cover drive.

It was the last Australia will see of Kohli batting this summer, with the captain missing the final three Tests to return home for the birth of his first child.

At 19 for six, India were in real danger of making their lowest ever score and when Wriddhiman Saha (4) chipped a Hazlewood delivery to Marnus Labuschagne and Ravi Ashwin was out next ball it became more of a reality.

A four from Hanuma Vihari at least took India past New Zealand’s all-time low to spare them that embarrassment.

But Vihari (8) didn’t last much longer, caught by Paine with Hazlewood again doing the damage before Mohammed Shami was forced to retire hurt after a Cummins thunderbolt hit his right arm.

US VP Pence gets Covid vaccine, Biden to receive jab Monday

US VP Pence gets Covid vaccine, Biden to receive jab Monday
US Vice President Mike Pence received a Covid-19 vaccine live on television Friday in a public display designed to boost national confidence in the drug, while President-elect Joe Biden is set to receive his shot on Monday.

“Building confidence in the vaccine is what brings us here this morning,” Pence said after being injected, quipping: “I didn’t feel a thing.”

Pence, his wife Karen and the nation s lead public health official, Surgeon General Jerome Adams, were all given the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in the annex to the White House.

Signalling the importance given to the event, top infectious disease official Anthony Fauci and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Robert Redfield were also in the room.

The Republican has sent mixed messages about the seriousness of Covid-19 throughout the crisis, even as the US death toll topped 300,000 this month.

However, he has been keen to take credit for the historic speed of vaccine development.

Early Friday, he tweeted that a second drug, made by Moderna, had been “overwhelmingly approved” and that distribution would “start immediately.”

This sparked confusion. An advisory panel recommended emergency use approval for Moderna s vaccine on Thursday, but the Food and Drug Administration was not expected to give the green light allowing distribution until later Friday.

Trump has made clear he is not planning to take the vaccine imminently, citing the belief that his recovery from a brief but severe bout of Covid has given him immunity.

“He will receive the vaccine as soon as his medical team determines its best. But his priority is frontline workers, those in long-term care facilities,” White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said.

At the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in Congress, and Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell were given the vaccine on Friday.

Pelosi cited “confidence in science” as she received the injection at the US Capitol, adding that mask wearing and social distancing should be continued as the vaccine is distributed.

For his part, McConnell said: “Vaccines are how we beat this virus.”

UK government pushes for lifting of U.S. travel restrictions

UK government pushes for lifting of U.S. travel restrictions - sources
The British government is making a concerted effort to persuade the Trump administration to lift or soften travel restrictions that bar most people in the United Kingdom from traveling to the United States, sources briefed on the matter said.

On Nov. 25, Reuters reported the White House was considering rescinding entry bans for most non-U.S. citizens who recently were in Brazil, Britain, Ireland and 26 other European countries.

Since then there has been no decision by President Donald Trump, but UK officials have held a series of high-level talks with White House and Cabinet officials.

The White House declined to comment on Friday.

But in an email to Reuters, a spokeswoman for the UK Department for Transport said “restarting transatlantic flights is of critical importance to the economic recovery of the UK and the US, the airline industry and for British nationals, most of whom cannot enter the US. British officials continue to pursue the resolution to this issue.”
The proposal to lift the travel restrictions won the backing of White House coronavirus task-force members, public health and other federal agencies, Reuters reported in November.

In October, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he had urged Trump to ease travel restrictions from Europe and Brazil to help boost the state’s struggling tourism economy.

One hurdle to lifting the restrictions is the high number of coronavirus infections in Europe. The United States last week extended travel restrictions on Mexico and Canadian land border crossings through at least Jan. 21.

The U.S. restrictions barring most visitors from Europe have been in place since mid-March to address the coronavirus pandemic, barring entry of most non-U.S. residents who have been in those countries in the previous 14 days.

Indian troops deliberately target UN vehicle in Chirikot sector: ISPR

Indian troops deliberately target UN vehicle in Chirikot sector
The Indian Army on Friday resorted to unprovoked aggression at the Line of Control (LoC) and targeted a United Nations Military Observers (UNMO) vehicle, said the ISPR.

According to the ISPR, two military observers were on-board the vehicle which was damaged in the attack. Both observers were rescued and safely evacuated to Rawalakot.

The UN vehicle, according to the military's media wing, was on its way to meet Indian ceasefire violations' victims at the Polas Village in the Chirikot sector.

Slamming India for targeting innocent civilians and UN peacekeepers across the border, Pakistan condemned the Indian Army for its naked aggression.

"It must be noted that The UN vehicles are clearly recognisable even from long distances due to their distinct make and type and clearly visible markings," said the ISPR.

"Such illegal and unlawful acts, against all established international norms, signify mal-intent of Indian Army to target not only innocent civilians residing along the Line of Control but UN Peace Keepers as well," said the ISPR.

Pakistan Army said it stands in solidarity with UNMOGIP officials and appreciates "the selfless services rendered by all members of UNMOGIP in discharge of their UN mandated duties."

Tensions between the nuclear armed nations have risen over the past couple of days, especially after the EU DisinfoLab exposed how India was using NGOs and fake websites to attack Pakistan's reputation.

On Friday, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi warned the world that New Delhi planned to conduct a surgical strike against Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference at Abu Dhabi, FM Qureshi said he had received information "through our intelligence agencies" that India was preparing to launch a surgical strike against Pakistan and fanning a new wave of terrorism.

Terming the situation as sensitive, he said Pakistan was fully aware of India's conspiracies and vowed that Islamabad would respond befittingly should New Delhi initiate military action.

FM Qureshi said that India was "trying to seek tacit approval" from "important players who they consider to be their partners".

The foreign minister said that this misadventure, in Pakistan's opinion, was being done to divert attention from serious issues. "To begin with: The situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir."

IHC seeks reply from PTA in social media rules’ case
The Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Justice Athar Minallah has issued notices to the parties in a petition challenging social media rules devised by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

CJ IHC Justice Athar Minallah heard the petition filed by Journalists Defence Committee of Pakistan Bar Council over the request of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists to challenged social rules devised by PTA.

The high court issued notices to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and sought response over the petition till January 25. Barrister Jahangir Jadoon appeared in the hearing to represent the petitioner.

Jadoon told the court that social media rules have been challenged after making a thorough review of the Constitution.

Justice Minallah remarked that freedom of expression was very important for a society. The court wrote in its order earlier for avoiding such legislations which gives the impression of denying press freedom.

He continued that it is a case of public interest and those societies have never risen up after being denied for free expression. The IHC chief justice directed that the rules framed by the relevant authorities should be forwarded to all stakeholders to hold meaningful dialogues.

The CJ IHC added that violation of Article 19 and 19-A could not be made at any cost.

Later, the high court issued notices to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and sought response over the petition till January 25.

New English lockdown can't be ruled out after Christmas, minister suggests

New English lockdown can't be ruled out after Christmas, minister suggests
A new national lockdown in England cannot be ruled out after Christmas, British schools minister Nick Gibb said on Friday, although he emphasised the regional “tiered” system of COVID restrictions was effective.

Northern Ireland and Wales have both outlined plans to head back into lockdown after Christmas to control infection rates, raising suggestions that England might follow suit.

“Nothing is ruled out of course as we tackle this pandemic but the test system is a very effective way... to focus the restrictions,” Gibb told Sky News when questioned about a possible third English lockdown.

Asked to confirm that the government was not ruling out a post-Christmas lockdown, Gibb said: “That’s not what I said. We have a very effective tier system.”

Swathes of England’s population, including London, have either entered or will enter the highest tier of restrictions this week, Tier 3, which requires all hospitality venues such as pubs and restaurants to close except for takeaways.

The Times newspaper quoted a government official as saying the case for going further than Tier 3 was getting stronger, though measures could still happen on a local basis.

The talk of tighter restrictions comes as the Britain prepares to relax all measures over Christmas.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson resisted pressure to change the law, keeping a promise to allow three households to meet up over five days next week, but urging people to exercise extreme caution.

John Edmunds, epidemiologist at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and member of the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), said the Christmas relaxation was a risk as prevalence was still high.

“It doesn’t look like the tier system is holding the epidemic wave back, unfortunately” he told Sky News. “I think we are going to have to look at these measures and perhaps tighten them up.”

ATC extendsinterim bail of PML-N leader Ayaz Sadiq and others
An anti-terrorism court (ATC) extended on Friday interim bail of PML-N leaders Ayaz Sadiq, Salman Rafique and 16 other accused in a 2018 case pertaining to violent protests.

Judge Ejaz Ahmed extended their bails until the next hearing after hearing arguments of their lawyers. Mr Sadiq, and other accused turned up before the court as it resumed hearing.

The lawyers contended that the police lodged the case on a political basis as their clients were not involved in any violence.

Speaking to the media after the hearing, Ayaz Sadiq said the 11-party opposition Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) won’t sit idle after submission of en masse resignations from assemblies but will push ahead with its struggle to oust the PTI government.

Ayaz Sadiq and other PML-N leaders were booked on charges of resorting to violent protests when former prime minister Nawaz Sharif returned to the country to serve his sentence in July 2018.

The first information report was registered under Section 7 of ATA. Mr Sharif along with his daughter Maryam Nawaz was arrested upon arrival at the Lahore airport on July 13, 2018 and shifted to jail to serve sentences in a graft case.

Presidential ordinance cannot change procedure of Senate elections, says JUI-F’s Fazl

Presidential ordinance cannot change procedure of Senate elections, says JUI-F’s Fazl
The presidential ordinance cannot change the procedure of the Senate elections, says JUI-F and PDM chief Fazlur Rehman.

He says the government is worried after PDM’s successful rallies and wants to conduct the Senate polls hurriedly. But the Opposition will not stand for the unconstitutional acts, said Rehman.

The JUI-F chief was speaking to the media in Karachi Thursday. He was visiting Jamia Arabia Ahsanul-Uloom in Gulshan-e-Iqbal to offer condolences on the demise of religious scholar Maulana Zarwali Khan who passed away on December 7. He accused the establishment of using the media to show PDM’s rally in Lahore as a failure.

“Who has given the government the authority to bypass the Constitution,” he asked. “It seems that the Cabinet does not have an understanding of constitutional matters.”

The PTI government, he said, cannot be considered a constitutional or democratic regime. The PDM will stay united and wanted real democracy and autonomy of the institutions, he said.

JUI-F’s sources told that following the decision of the federal government about holding Senate elections in February instead of March, the JUI-F supremo arrived in Karachi where he is expected to meet PPP’s central leaders to make a joint strategy of the Opposition over the Senate’s polls and the PDM’s deadline to the

Pak vs NZ: Pakistan lose nine wickets for 153 runs in 20 overs

Pak vs NZ: Pakistan lose nine wickets for 153 runs in 20 overs
Pakistan has decided to bat after winning the toss in the first T20 match between Pakistan and New Zealand being played in Auckland today.

Before the match started, Pakistani cricket team captain Shadab Khan and New Zealand captain Mitchell Centenary participated in the unveiling ceremony of the T20 series trophy on Friday. Captains of both teams interacted with the media during the ceremony.

Pakistani team captain expressed confidence and vowed to perform well in the series against Kiwis. While Babar Azam's absence is a blow for the visitors, a blend of youngsters and the experienced ones is good enough to pose a strong challenge to the Black Caps.

Meanwhile, New Zealand team captain Mitchell Centenary said: "All the boys are excited, however, the series will not be easy."

Pakistan, who already have a 13-8 record against New Zealand in the T20Is, will go as favorites in the first match as the hosts will be without some of their top cricketers, including Kane Williamson, the regular captain who has opted out of the opener of the series due to the birth of his child.

Other notable members of the Kiwis who will miss the opening game on Friday are Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson, and the injured Lockie Ferguson. All-rounder Shadab Khan will be leading the Pakistan Cricket Team against New Zealand in the absence of Babar Azam.

The management has made the decision after Skipper Babar Azam was ruled out due to a fracture in his right thumb earlier this week.

Stand-in captain Shadab saved Green Shirts after they suffered a horrible collapse, losing four wickets for just 20 runs.

The 22-year-old Shadab made 32-ball 42 which included three sixes and two fours while Faheem Ashraf made 31 in just 18 balls. Imad Wasim scored 14-ball 19.

The new opening pair of wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique couldn’t do wonders as debutant Jacob Duffy ripped off Pakistan’s top-order. Pakistan lost three wickets in three balls and was teetering at 20/4 in 4.1 overs.

Duffy finished with figures of 4/33 while Scott Kuggeleijn claimed figures of 3/27. Ish Sodhi and Blair Tickner took one each.

PM Imran Khan’s aide Faisal Javed asks PCB to look into Mohammad Amir’s concerns

PM Imran Khan’s aide Faisal Javed asks PCB to look into Mohammad Amir’s concerns
Senior ruling party member and a close aide of Prime Minister Imran Khan, Senator Faisal Javed Khan, has advised the cricket authorities to address the concerns of Mohammad Amir, saying Pakistan “should not waste a talented player” like Amir.

Javed expressed on Twitter his opinion on the controversy that hit Pakistan cricket on Thursday, suggesting both parties sit together to sort their differences.

In a shocking statement on Thursday, Amir announced his retirement from the game citing the "mental torture" and "hostile environment" created against him since he decided to limit himself to white-ball cricket last year. Javed asked the cricketer to reconsider his decision to quit Test cricket, saying “his age and form still suit him this very format”.

“No emotional decision please,” the senator tweeted.

Amir, who was jailed in 2011 for his part in a spot-fixing scandal, served three months in prison and a five-year ban from all forms of cricket before returning to the Pakistan squad in January 2016.

The left-arm bowler has since excelled in limited-overs cricket, helping Pakistan to the Champions Trophy title in 2017, but last month he was dropped from the squad to tour New Zealand.

Asked if he was leaving the sport altogether he said: "No, I'm not going away from cricket. If you have seen the atmosphere here and the way I've been sidelined, I got a wake-up call when I was not selected in the 35-man squad,"

"I don't think I can play cricket under this management. I think I should leave cricket this time. I am being tortured mentally. I don't think I can tolerate any more torture now.

"I've experienced a lot of torture from 2010 to 2015. I was away from the game and sentenced for my mistake. I'm being tortured again and again "

Amir, who has 259 wickets across all formats, had retired from test cricket last year to focus on the white-ball game.

He was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers in last year's 50-overs World Cup in England with 17 wickets as they missed out on a semi-final spot.

Amir added that the only people who supported him were former captain Shahid Afridi and former PCB chairman Najam Sethi. "Sethi and Shahid Afridi were the two people whom I will thank forever, both of them supported me at a tough time," he added.

"I returned after completing the sentence of five years, it's not like I returned after a year. The rest of the team said, 'We will not play with Mohammad Amir'."

The PCB said Amir had confirmed to chief executive Wasim Khan that he had "no desires or intentions of playing international cricket" and should therefore not be considered for selection.

"This is a personal decision of Mohammad Amir, which the PCB respects," it said in a statement.

Senate elections:PM Imran Khan's legal team say Opposition's resignations don't matter

Senate elections:PM Imran Khan's legal team say Opposition's resignations don't matter.
Prime Minister Imran Khan's legal team has opined that the the Senate elections "cannot be stopped" even if Opposition members decide to step down from provincial assemblies.

Sources revealed that the prime minister recently consulted his legal team over the upcoming Senate elections which the PTI government had decided would be held a month earlier than planned in 2021 and which the former Senate chairperson Raza Rabbani had termed was an illegal move.

"How can an election be stopped if a member does not go to the polls or resigns," PM Imran Khan's team of legal experts asked, according to the sources.

"If the Opposition resigns, the government candidates will win all the seats in the provincial assemblies," they added. The experts also noted that if the Sindh Assembly was dissolved, the Senate elections would not be held in that province only but would go ahead in the remaining three.

"Even if the Sindh Assembly is dissolved, the electoral college of the rest of the three provinces will remain intact," they explained, advising the PTI government to "submit nomination papers of more candidates in the Senate elections".

PTI government would hold the Senate elections in February instead of March 2021 in a decision made during Tuesday's Cabinet meeting chaired by PM Imran Khan.

The government has decided to use "open voting" for the elections, the sources had added. In a press conference following the Cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Shibli Faraz had said the PTI-led government was striving to make them free and fair.

"Controversies have always surrounded the Senate elections," he had said. "It is such an old practice that it is assumed that in the elections, [horse trading] will surely take place."

The government of Sindh had responded strongly to the development, with its spokesperson, Senator Murtaza Wahab, saying the Centre had "no knowledge" of the law and had "nothing to do" with the rule of law.

"Announcing Senate elections is not the prerogative of the government," Wahab had said.

"The Election Commission of Pakistan had the authority to announce a date for the polls," he had added, noting that under the Election Act, Senate elections were held via secret balloting.

"Conducting polls through the show of hands is unconstitutional," Wahab had stressed.

French President Emmanuel Macron tests positive for Covid-19, to self-isolate for a week

French President Emmanuel Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday, the presidency said, adding that he would now self-isolate for the next week.

“The president tested positive for Covid-19 today,” it said in a statement, adding that he had been tested after the “onset of the first symptoms”.

Macron will now, in accordance with national regulations, “self isolate for seven days. He will continue to work and carry out his activities remotely,” it said.

A spokeswoman for the presidency said that all his trips had been cancelled, including an upcoming visit to Lebanon on December 22.

They added that he was trying to assess where he could have contracted the virus. Macron was at a European Council heads of state meeting on December 10-11.

Prime Minister Jean Castex will also self isolate after coming into contact with Macron over the last few days, said Gerard Larcher, head of the Senate, the upper house of the French parliament.

The French president is one of several heads of state and government around the world who have contracted Covid-19, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and US President Donald Trump.

France, earlier this week, eased restrictions imposed to battle the second wave of the coronavirus but infection rates remain high.

There is still a nationwide overnight curfew from 8pm to halt the spread of the virus while restaurants and cafes as well as theatres and cinemas remain closed.

Over 59,300 people have died in France of coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, according to official figures.

The recording of over 17,000 new cases on Wednesday alone has also generated concern as people shop and travel more intensely ahead of the Christmas holidays.

Like other EU states, France is pinning its hopes on a vaccine to quell the virus and Prime Minister Jean Castex said Wednesday the country will receive around 1.16 million Covid-19 vaccine doses by year end.

Germany enters harder lockdown as virus deaths hit new high

Germany enters harder lockdown as virus deaths hit new high
Germany reported a record level of coronavirus deaths as it entered a harder lockdown on Wednesday, closing shops and schools to try to bring down stubbornly high new daily infections.

The country recorded 179.8 virus infections per 100,000 residents over the last seven days, a new high and significantly more than the 149 per 100,000 reported a week ago by the Robert Koch Institute, the country’s disease control centre.

It also blew past its previous daily death toll, with Germany’s 16 states reporting that 952 more people had died of the virus, the institute said. That was far greater than the previous daily record set Friday of 598 deaths, although it included two days of figures from the hard-hit eastern state of Saxony, which did not report Tuesday. It brought the country’s overall pandemic death toll to 23,427.

It’s as if the virus wanted to remind us how important what we’re now doing is, Health Minister Jens Spahn said of the surge in deaths being reported on the day new restrictions come into force.

Faced with exponentially increasing cases in October, Germany implemented a lockdown light at the start of November, which closed bars and restaurants but left shops open. The measures slowed the weekly increase in new infections but didn’t bring them down, prompting officials to take more drastic measures.

In addition to closing shops and moving children to remote learning for the few days before the Christmas holidays, private gatherings are being limited to two households with a maximum of five people, among other things.

On Berlin’s upscale Kurfuerstendamm boulevard, Berlin resident Noury Oeddin looked around at the empty streets and shuttered shops in disbelief as the lockdown measures announced Sunday were put into force.

It’s very strange, it’s not normal, said the 46-year-old bakery manager. “I don’t know what these politicians want to do they left it all open for too long, and now all of a sudden we had to quickly buy everything in two days. We people don’t know what they are doing anymore.

Retiree Hans-Joachim Pauer said, however, that the measures were understandable.

This is certainly harmful to the economy, but what alternative do we have? the 71-year-old asked. Certainly it is not good.

Grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations, banks and other businesses providing services deemed essential including Christmas tree vendors can remain open.

In Saxony, where the virus is spreading most rapidly in Germany at the moment, hospitals are filling up. The state’s governor said more drastic restrictions might be necessary, calling it pure poison when too many people were still going out and about.

The restrictions are expected last until at least Jan. 10 but enjoy wide support, with the latest polls showing more than 80% of Germans approve of the lockdown measures or think they should be stricter.

This year, I don’t think Christmas is that important, in the face of the facts we have in society right now, said Stella Kretschmer, who was picking up a prescription in the western city of Cologne. The 27-year-old student said she was in favor of shops being closed down.

For me, consumption is not the most important thing, she said, adding, however, that she does feel sorry for the people who ... have to fear for their jobs.

The elections are to be held for 52 seats of the upper house because as many members of the 104-member Senate will retire on March 11.

"What I don't understand is that if the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) makes no difference to you [...] what is the emergency behind announcing elections one month early. Something which has not happened before in the country's history," the PML-N vice president said.

She stated that from the government's actions, it was clear it has understood that its days are now numbered. "Whatever tactics you use, you will have to go home."

Maryam also accused the premier of "destroying" national institutions by "dragging them into politics".

She said that the schedule for all elections were decided by the ECP. "All decisions are made by the ECP, no prime minister can do this. In what capacity did you announce the decision to hold Senate elections one month earlier?

"Did you not consult the Constitution of Pakistan? Did no one from your army of advisers tell you that this is the job of the ECP? Or have you taken it upon yourself to ruin the state of the Constitution and national institutions?"

She added that the premier has also "suddenly remembered" his preferred way of holding the Senate polls which is the show of hands method. Information Minister Shibli Faraz had earlier said the government would approach the Supreme Court to seek its guidance regarding holding the Senate polls through show of hands.

"Why are you making the apex court controversial?" she asked.

Maryam maintained that she was not against the show of hands method but claimed that the government's motives behind doing so were not transparent. She added that the government had taken "full advantage" of secret ballot in the past but was now against it when it can see itself on its way out.

"There needs to be a Constitutional amendment. This can't be bulldozed through an ordinance. It is the job of the Parliament, the SC can only interpret but it can't make a new law."

"You can't use the Constitution for your personal gain," she said. Maryam also appealed to the ECP chairman to play his role.

Responding to a question from a reporter, Maryam said that the opposition will not sit silently while the government announces by-elections. "You can't hold a by-election on 500 seats."

"If the PDM resigns, which we will, then you can't hold an election," she said. She added that pictures of the premier playing with his dogs that were released as the opposition alliance held a public meeting in Lahore showed the government's "fear".

"The pictures showed a glimpse of your fear," she said, adding that it was one thing to "play with dogs" and entirely another to play with the country's national institutions. You will have to pay for doing the latter, she said.

Pakistani pacer Mohammad Amir to leave cricket due to 'mental torture'

Pakistan left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir
Pakistan left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir said he was leaving the world of cricket due to "torture" and an environment created by the Pakistan team management that is "pushing him away".

In a video shared by sports journalist Shoaib Jatt, Amir explained his reasoning for leaving cricket. “I am not going away from cricket but I am being pushed away from it,” the left-arm pacer said, adding that an “environment” has been created for him to get “sidelined”.

“The environment that has been created, I feel that I cannot play cricket under this management,” said Amir.

The 28-year-old said he got a wake-up call once he was not named in the 35-man squad for the Pakistan tour to New Zealand.

“I feel that I am leaving cricket at this time because I am being mentally tortured,” said the pacer. He added that he “cannot survive this much torture” because he has already seen it from 2010 to 2015 when he was placed under a ban over a spot-fixing scandal.

Amir said he was being tortured by being told that the “PCB invested a lot” in him.

He dismissed the statement and said there were only two people from the PCB that invested in him — Shahid Afridi and former PCB chairperson Najam Sethi.

The 28-year-old said both men supported him because when he was returning his teammates used to say that they will not play with him.

“I will always be thankful to these two people as they supported me in my tough time,” said Amir.

The pacer also spoke about his decision to retire from Test cricket, saying it was his “personal decision” that was being portrayed “incorrectly”.

“I took a personal decision and it was presented incorrectly before people by implying I do not want to play for the country,” said Amir. He said this decision was attached to him playing in different leagues around the world.

However, Amir reminded everyone that his comeback was “due to those leagues”, adding that he had come back to cricket from the Bangladesh Premier League after his ban ended.

“I had the best time then. If I was dying [to play] for leagues, I could have said that I am no longer playing for Pakistan and playing here and let me enjoy here,” said Amir.

The left-arm pacer said he wanted to invest as much as he could in white-ball cricket for Pakistan but “after every one month or two” something controversial would be said about his decision.

PCB respects Amir's decision: Wasim Khan

Hours after the announcement Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement that its CEO Wasim Khan spoke with Amir after he saw the reports that the fast bowler had announced his retirement from international cricket.

"The 29-year-old confirmed to the PCB chief executive that he has no desires or intensions of playing international cricket and as such, he should not be considered for future international matches," said the statement.

The statement further said that the decision to retire was a personal one for Amir, adding that it "respects" his decision. It also added that it "will not make any further comment on this matter at this stage".

Amir’s decision to retire has come quite abruptly and the pacer had recently featured in the Lanka Premier League.

The left-arm pacer had played 147 international matches in which he took 259 wickets.

He was part of the Pakistan squad which won the 2009 World T20I and the 2017 Champions Trophy.

The pacer was also banned for five years for his involvement in the 2010 spot-fixing scandal during Pakistan's tour of England in 2010.

Amir had earlier retired from Test cricket citing workload reasons and had made himself available for the limited-overs format.
