Australia's Victoria reports deadliest day of COVID-19 pandemic

Australia's Victoria reports deadliest day of COVID-19 pandemic
Australia’s second-most populous state, Victoria, reported its deadliest day of the COVID-19 outbreak on Sunday, with 17 people dying, although new infections showed signs of easing.

Victoria, at the centre of a second wave of infections in Australia, reported 394 cases of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, compared with a daily average of 400-500 over the past week. The new deaths bring the state’s total to 210.

The southeastern state, with infections concentrated in the capital Melbourne, accounts for more than two-thirds of the national tally of nearly 21,000.

In an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus, Victoria has imposed a night curfew, tightened restrictions on people’s daily movements and ordered large parts of the economy to close.

Those measures have helped, although the situation remains challenging, as cases with unknown sources of infection continue to increase, said Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews.

The state reported 174 such “mystery” cases in the past 24 hours, up from 130 on Saturday and bringing the total to 2,758.

“Even large numbers in known contained outbreaks are, to a certain extent, less significant than the smaller number of cases where we simply can’t find the circumstance or point of origin,” Andrews told reporters.

“They’re the ones that are incredibly challenging from a containment point of view.”

Victoria’s coronavirus reproduction rate is around 1, meaning each infected person is passing the virus on to at least one other person.

“We have to drive that down, so that every third or fourth person who has it is infecting someone else. That’s where we’ll see the numbers halve and halve again and become more manageable,” Andrews said. “That will essentially take time.”

Neighbouring New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, recorded 10 infections on Sunday, with authorities ordering students at two state schools to self-isolate after reporting COVID-19 cases.

Australia to host T20 World Cup in 2022

Australia to host T20 World Cup in 2022
Australia will host the this year's T20 World Cup delayed by the coronavirus in 2022, the International Cricket Council announced on Friday.

India will host the 2021 edition as planned, the global governing body said, while the 50-over Women´s World Cup, scheduled for next year in New Zealand, has been postponed until 2022.

The ICC last month announced that the 2020 edition of the T20 World Cup could not take place as planned in Australia from October this year.

ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney said in a statement on Friday: "We now have absolute clarity on the future of ICC events, enabling all of our members to focus on the rescheduling of lost international and domestic cricket.

"We will now proceed as planned with the men's T20 World Cup 2021 in India and host the 2022 edition in Australia."

ICC acting chairman Imran Khwaja said health and safety had been the top priority.

"The decisions the board have taken today are in the best interests of the sport, our partners and importantly our fans," he added.

COVID-19 has played havoc with the global sporting calendar but international cricket has resumed behind closed doors in England, with the host nation currently taking on Pakistan in a three-match Test series.

The format of the 2021 T20 World Cup will remain as it was for 2020 and all teams that qualified for that event will now participate in India in 2021.

A new qualification process will be run for the 2022 edition.

The format of the postponed Women's World Cup will remain as it was for 2021. Five teams have already qualified for the event and that will stand for 2022.

The original global qualification event to determine the final three teams will now be held in 2021.

Islamabad High Court stays new membership of navy sailing club

Islamabad High Court
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday issued a stay order against new membership of the Navy Sailing Club and asked the naval authorities to file replies till Aug 19.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah issued the restraining order while hearing a petition seeking contempt of court proceedings against Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Amir Ali Ahmed, Cabinet Division Secretary Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi for not complying with the directive of sealing the club issued earlier by the court.

Petitioner Zeenat Saleem told the court that neither the CDA nor the naval authorities had implemented the order for sealing the club. However, Ashtar Ausaf Ali, the counsel for the chief of naval staff, insisted that pursuant to the court’s directive, the club had been sealed.

The court expressed confidence in the undertaking given by the lawyer and asked him to ensure that no activity took place at the sealed premises.

Earlier, Chief Justice Minallah had ordered sealing of the club: “Prima facie, the occupation of the land and construction of building thereon are illegal and in violation of the enforced laws. It is, therefore, ordered that till the next date fixed the federal government, through the secretary cabinet, and the chairman, Capital Development Authority, shall seal the premises,” the order said.

The court directed the Cabinet Division secretary to place the matter before the federal cabinet at its next meeting for consideration because the enforced laws were not being implemented and that enforcement had been confined to common citizens.

The petitioner contended that despite the court’s orders, the CDA was reluctant to seal the premises.

According to the petition, the club is being run as usual and information desk of the club is still distributing membership forms among visitors as per normal routine.

It said that the CDA was supposed to seal the premises with its own locks and deploying the staff for compliance with the court order.

However, “no such action of sealing has been undertaken by CDA and the management of PN Sailing Club is continuing with its business affairs as a routine matter. This is a classic example of discriminatory application of law by CDA,” the petition claimed.

It requested the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the above-mentioned authorities and direct the respondents to comply with the court order in letter and spirit.

Turkey’s Erdogan denounces Greece-Egypt maritime deal as ‘worthless’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has denounced a maritime deal between Greece and Egypt in the eastern Mediterranean as “worthless,” saying his country will resume its controversial oil and gas exploration in the area.

Speaking after Friday prayers in the recently-reconverted Hagia Sophia Mosque, Erdogan said the deal was a supposed response to Turkey’s maritime agreement with Libya’s internationally-recognized government that had been reached last year.

The maritime deal angered Greece at the time, which slammed it as an “infringement on its sovereignty” that could complicate Athens’ decades-old disputes with Ankara over Cyprus and maritime rights in the Aegean Sea.

Erdogan said Turkey had paused research in waters disputed with Greece after a request from German Chancellor Angela Merkel but had now restarted research activities.

“I told (Merkel) we’ll pause drilling for three to four weeks if you trust Greece and the others… but I don’t trust them and you will see,” the Turkish president said. “We have immediately resumed exploration activities.”

He said the Turkish research vessel Barbaros Hayreddin, which is sailing off the western coast of Cyprus, would continue working in the area.

On Thursday, Egypt and Greece signed a bilateral agreement that sets the sea boundary between the two countries and demarcates an exclusive economic zone for oil and gas drilling rights.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry described the deal as “null and void” in a statement late Thursday, stressing that Greece and Egypt had no mutual sea border. The ministry also said the deal attempted to usurp Libya’s maritime rights.

Turkey and Greece are locked in a dispute over offshore rights in the eastern Mediterranean.

European Union (EU) member Cyprus and Turkey have also argued for years regarding the ownership of fossil fuels in the eastern Mediterranean, where Ankara says Turkish Cypriots are entitled to a share of the resources.

Turkey rejects the agreements that the internationally-recognized Cypriot government has reached with other Mediterranean states on maritime economic zones.

Cyprus was divided in 1974 after a Turkish invasion triggered by a brief, Greek-inspired coup. Several peacemaking efforts have failed, and the discovery of offshore resources in the eastern Mediterranean has complicated the matter.

China sentences another Canadian to death

China sentences another Canadian to death
China sentenced another Canadian to death on drugs charges Friday, the second in two days to be handed the punishment, as tensions soar between Beijing and Ottawa.

The Foshan Intermediate People´s Court in the country´s southern Guangdong province said Ye Jianhui had been sentenced for trafficking and manufacturing drugs, and would have all his assets confiscated.

According to the state-run Global Times, authorities seized more than 217 kilogrammes of white crystals containing MDMA from Ye and five others in 2016.

The rest of the group were also sentenced on Friday and one other death sentence was issued, while the others were given lesser penalties.

It comes a day after a court in the provincial capital Guangzhou handed a death sentence to Canadian national Xu Weihong on a charge of making drugs.

Last year, China also sentenced two other Canadians to death on drug trafficking charges as ties sour between the two countries on a number of fronts including the arrest of top Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou.

Canadian pleas for clemency for the pair, Robert Lloyd Schellenberg and Fan Wei, have so far not been successful.

When asked about the latest case Friday, China´s foreign ministry said its "judicial organs handle cases independently in strict accordance with the law".

"We urge Canada to take immediate and effective measures to correct its mistakes and make concrete efforts to bring bilateral relations back on track," said spokesman Wang Wenbin at a regular press briefing.

After warnings and negotiations with the telecom regulator.

Global short funny video platform TikTok has not only upgraded its ‘Community Guidelines’, but also released its Urdu language version for the first time.

The upgraded Community Guidelines provide general guidance on “what is and what is not” allowed on the platform to keep TikTok a safe place for creativity and joy. The platform is now localised and will work in accordance with local laws and norms.

TikTok has taken measures for making its teams able to remove content that violates the Community Guidelines and suspend or ban accounts involved in severe or repeated violations.

Besides, TikTok has an in-app reporting feature for users to flag potentially inappropriate content or accounts to the management of the platform.

TikTok has recently released its Transparency Report highlighting the volume of videos which have been removed from the platform for violating its Community Guidelines or Terms of Service. Pakistan had the third highest number of removed videos.

This demonstrates TikTok’s commitment to removing any potentially harmful or inappropriate content reported in Pakistan. The content moderation is performed by deploying a combination of policies, technologies and moderation strategies to detect and review problematic content and accounts and implement appropriate penalties.

After receiving complaints that the funny videos being uploaded at TikTok are immoral, obscene and vulgar and even hurt sentiments of respectable citizens, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority issued a warning to it on July 20.

The PTA warning to TikTok said that the free for policy of the social media platform was having an “extremely negative effects on society in general and youth in particular”.

The PTA had told TikTok to moderate socialisation and content within legal and moral limits and in accordance with the country’s laws. A warning was issued to TikTok that it could be banned in Pakistan.

Microsoft aiming to buy TikTok entire global business: FT

Microsoft aiming to buy TikTok entire global business
Microsoft is chasing a deal to buy all of TikTok’s global business, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing five people with knowledge of the talks.

However, a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters that Microsoft had not raised the prospect of buying all of TikTok in its negotiations with ByteDance.

Microsoft had said it was seeking to buy the assets of TikTok in North America, Australia and New Zealand. It had not disclosed how much it was willing to pay, though sources previously told Reuters that ByteDance executives value all of TikTok at more than $50 billion.

Microsoft declined to comment on the report. TikTok parent ByteDance did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

The company is exploring whether it can add regions including India and Europe to the deal, according to the FT report.

There was a “deal in the works” with Microsoft for TikTok India but it fell through, the FT reported, citing one person close to ByteDance in India.

TikTok faces a Sept. 15 deadline to either complete a sale of its U.S. operations to Microsoft or face a ban in the United States.

Shehbaz Sharif criticizes FM Qureshi over OIC remarks

Shehbaz Sharif
PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif on Friday criticised the remarks of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi about the Saudi-led Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and termed it "highly unfortunate and irresponsible".

In a tweet, the opposition leader lambasted foreign minister's statement, saying that it "flies in the face of history and Pakistan's trusted relationship with the Kingdom."

"The cavalier attitude by this government is undermining Pakistan's core relations with friendly countries," the PML-N stalwart wrote on Twitter.

Criticising the government for isolating Pakistan at the global stage due to its dismal stances on international issues, the PML-N president said that the government has already made similar blunders towards friendly countries in the past.

"Apologise to Saudi Arabia and deal matters wisely and efficiently," he said, reminding the government about the strategic and historic brotherly relations between the two countries and that Riyadh has always backed Islamabad in its time of need.

Earlier on Wednesday, FM Qureshi, in an unusually assertive way, asked OIC to stop dragging its feet on the convening of a meeting of its Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) over the Kashmir conflict.

Saudi crown prince accused of sending hit squad to Canada, lawsuit alleges

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been accused of sending a hit-squad to Canada in order to kill a former Saudi intelligence official.

The failed plan to kill Saad al-Jabri was soon after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey, court documents filed in the US allege.

Mr Jabri, a veteran of the government of Saudi Arabia, fled into exile three years ago.

He has been under private security protection in Toronto since.

Read more: Turkish court tries Saudis in absentia for Khashoggi killing

The alleged plot failed after Canadian border agents became suspicious of the hit-squad as they attempted to enter the country at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, court documents say.

Mr Jabri, 61, was for years the key go-between for Britain's MI6 and other Western spy agencies in Saudi Arabia.

What does the complaint say?

The 106-page unproven complaint, which was filed in Washington DC, accuses the crown prince of attempting to murder Mr Jabri in order to silence him.

Mr Jabri says this is down to him possessing "damning information". The document says this includes alleged corruption and overseeing a team of personal mercenaries labelled the Tiger Squad.

Members of the Tiger Squad were involved in the murder of dissident journalist Khashoggi, who was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018, it says.

"Few places hold more sensitive, humiliating and damning information about defendant bin Salman than the mind and memory of Dr Saad - except perhaps the recordings Dr Saad made in anticipation of his killing," the document says.

"That is why defendant bin Salman wants him dead, and why defendant bin Salman has worked to achieve that objective over the last three years."

After fleeing Saudi Arabia ahead of a purge by the all-powerful crown prince in 2017, Mr Jabri fled to Canada via Turkey.

He alleges Mohammed bin Salman made repeated efforts to return him to Saudi Arabia, even sending private messages, including one that read: "We shall certainly reach you".

Then, less than two weeks after the murder of Khashoggi, Mr Jabri says the Tiger Squad travelled to Canada with the intention of killing him.

The court filing says the group - which included a man from the same department as the man accused of dismembering Khashoggi - were carrying two bags of forensic tools.

However, Canadian border agents "quickly became suspicious" of the group and refused them entry after interviewing them, it says.

"Bin Salman in fact dispatched a hit squad to North America to kill Dr Saad," the claim asserts.

Mr Jabri is accusing the crown prince of attempted extrajudicial killing in violation of the US Torture Victim Protection Act and in breach of international law.

The Saudi government did not respond to a request for comment.

Canada's Federal Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair said he couldn't comment on the specific case but said the government was "aware of incidents in which foreign actors have attempted to monitor, intimidate or threaten Canadians and those living in Canada."

"It is completely unacceptable and we will never tolerate foreign actors threatening Canada's national security or the safety of our citizens and residents. Canadians can be confident that our security agencies have the skills and resources necessary to detect, investigate and respond to such threats," he said.

"We will always take the necessary action to keep Canadians and those on Canadian soil safe and we invite people to report any such threats to law enforcement authorities."

In May, Mr Jabri's children had been seized as "hostages", according to his eldest son, Khalid.

PIA likely to restore services of pilots cleared by CAA regarding licences

Pakistan International Airlines
The management of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is likely to add those pilots in its duty roster who have been cleared by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regarding their licences.

However, the PIA spokesperson said in a statement that the management of the national carrier has not yet received the list of the pilots cleared for their licences.

It is yet to be disclosed whether the issue of fake licences issued by the Pakistani operators was created by the alleged negligence of the CAA or the aviation minister remained unaware about the wrong credentials of pilots including names and licence numbers.

27 out of 96 aviates from the national carrier turned out to be cleared of any suspicions pertaining the licences.

The aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan had revealed a list of 262 suspected pilots due to their dubious licences, however, the list was not uploaded on the CAA’s official website not the aviation authority took responsibility of it.

3 Edible Wild Mushrooms and 5 to avoid

Gathering wild mushrooms can also be an extremely rewarding and interesting hobby
Throughout history, people around the world have foraged wild mushrooms for food.

Gathering wild mushrooms can also be an extremely rewarding and interesting hobby. However, those who do it must proceed with the utmost caution.

Though many wild mushrooms are highly nutritious, delicious, and safe to consume, others pose a serious risk to your health and can even cause death if ingested.

For this reason, it’s critical to only hunt mushrooms with someone who’s highly experienced at identifying both edible and poisonous mushrooms.

This article lists 3 edible wild mushrooms, as well as 5 poisonous mushrooms to avoid.

1. Hen-of-the-woods

Grifola frondosa, commonly known as hen-of-the-woods or maitake, is an edible mushroom that’s a favorite of mushroom hunters.

Growth

Hen-of-the-woods is a polypore a type of fungus that has small pores covering its underside.

They grow on the bases of trees in shelf-like clusters, favoring hardwoods like oak. These clusters resemble the tail feathers of a sitting hen hence the name “hen-of-the-woods.” Several hen-of-the-woods may grow on a single tree (1).

This mushroom is native to China but also grows in Japan and North America, especially the northeastern United States. It’s a perennial mushroom and often grows in the same spot for many years.

Identification

Hen-of-the-woods are grayish-brown in color, while the underside of the caps and branch-like stalk are white, though coloring can vary.

These mushrooms are most commonly found in the fall, but they can be found less frequently in the summer months as well.

Hen-of-the-woods can grow quite large. Some mushroom hunters have scored massive mushrooms weighing up to 50 pounds, but most weigh 3–15 pounds.

A helpful clue when identifying hen-of-the-woods is that it does not have gills, and the underside of its cap has tiny pores, which are smallest at the edges.

Don’t eat older specimens that are orange or reddish in color, as they may be contaminated with bacteria or mold.

Hen-of-the-woods is often favored by beginner mushroom hunters. It’s distinctive and does not have many dangerous look-alikes, making it a safe option for novices.

Nutrition

Hen-of-the-woods are quite nutritious and particularly high in the B vitamins folate, niacin, and riboflavin, all of which are involved in energy metabolism and cellular growt.

This mushroom also contains powerful health-promoting compounds, including complex carbohydrates called glucans.

Glucans isolated from hen-of-the-woods have been shown to have immune-boosting properties in animal studies

What’s more, research shows that these mushrooms may have anticancer, cholesterol-reducing, and anti-inflammatory properties.

2. Oyster mushroom

The oyster mushroom is a delicious edible mushroom that resembles an oyster in shape and is commonly sought after by mushroom hunters.

Growth

Oyster mushrooms grow in forests around the world, including throughout North America.

These mushrooms grow on dead or dying hardwood trees like beech and oak trees. They can sometimes be found growing on fallen branches and dead stumps.

Oyster mushrooms decompose decaying wood and release nutrients into the soil, recycling nutrients to be used by other plants and organisms in forest ecosystems.

They can be found during the spring and fall months in the Northern United States and year-round in warmer climates.

Identification

Oyster mushrooms grow in clusters resembling shelves on dead or dying hardwood trees.

Depending on the time of year, the tops of the oyster-shaped caps of these mushrooms can range from white to brownish-gray and are typically 2–8 inches wide.

The undersides of the caps are covered with tightly spaced gills that run down the stubby, sometimes nonexistent, stem and are white or tan in color.

Oyster mushrooms can grow in large numbers, and many different clusters can be found on the same tree.

Nutrition

Oyster mushrooms have thick, white, mild-tasting flesh that contains a variety of nutrients. They are particularly high in B vitamins, including niacin and riboflavin, as well as the minerals potassium, copper, iron, and zinc.

They also contain powerful anti-inflammatory plant compounds, including triterpenoids, glycoproteins, and lectins, which may offer some protection against chronic disease.

For example, test-tube research shows that oyster mushrooms have properties that help fight prostate, colon, and breast cancer cells. However, human studies are lacking.

Oyster mushrooms are excellent sautéed with onions and garlic as a side dish. You can also add them to soups, pastas, and meat dishes.

3. Sulphur shelf mushroom

The sulphur shelf mushroom is also known as chicken-of-the-woods or chicken mushroom. It’s a bright orange or yellow mushroom with a unique, meaty flavor.

Growth

Sulphur shelf mushrooms grow on hardwood trees in North America and Europe. They are widely distributed east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States.

These mushrooms can either act as parasites on living or dying trees, or derive nutrients from dead trees, such as rotting tree stumps.

Sulphur shelf mushrooms grow on trees in shelf-like clusters. They are commonly found on large oak trees and typically harvested during the summer and fall months.

It should be noted that sulphur shelf look-alike Laetiporus species exist. They grow on conifer trees should be avoided, as they can cause severe allergic reactions in some people.

Identification

Sulphur shelf mushrooms are typically orange or yellow in color and grow in overlapping shelf-like clusters on hardwoods, such as oak, willow, and chestnut.

The caps of the mushroom are fan-like or semicircular in shape and typically 2–12 inches across and up to 8 inches deep. The sulphur shelf does not have gills, and the underside of the caps is covered with tiny pores.

This mushroom has a smooth, suede-like texture and yellow-orange color, which fades to a dull white when the mushroom is past maturity.

Many sulphur shelf mushrooms may grow on a single tree, with individual mushrooms growing heavier than 50 pounds.

Nutrition

Like most mushrooms, sulphur shelf mushrooms are low in calories and offer a good amount of nutrients, including fiber, vitamin C, potassium, zinc, phosphorus, and magnesium.

Sulphur shelf mushrooms also contain plant compounds, including polysaccharides, eburicoic acid, and cinnamic acid. They have been shown to have antifungal, tumor-inhibiting, and antioxidant properties in test-tube and animal studies.

Sulphur shelf mushrooms should be eaten cooked not raw. You can bring out their meaty texture and hearty flavor by sautéing them with butter, adding them to vegetable dishes, or mixing them into omelets.

Poisonous mushrooms to avoid
Though many wild mushrooms can be enjoyed safely, others pose a threat to your health.

Never consume the following mushrooms:

Death cap. Death caps are among the most poisonous of all mushrooms and responsible for the majority of mushroom-related deaths worldwide. They grow in many countries around the world.

Conocybe filaris. This mushroom grows in Europe, Asia, and North America and contains the same toxins as the death cap. It has a smooth, cone-like cap that is brownish in color. They are highly toxic and can be fatal if ingested.

Autumn skullcap. Also known as the “deadly Galerina,” autumn skullcaps are among the most poisonous of mushrooms. They have small, brown caps and grow on rotting wood.

Death angel. Related to the death cap, the death angel grows along the West Coast of the United States. This mushroom is mostly white and can cause severe illness and death if eaten.

False morels. These resemble edible true morels, making them especially dangerous. Unlike true morels, they are not completely hollow when cut.

In addition to the mushrooms listed above, many more types of poisonous mushrooms exist.

If you are ever unsure whether a wild mushroom is edible, do not eat it. Some mushrooms can cause severe sickness and even death.

A popular saying among mushroom hunters is, “There are old mushroom hunters, and there are bold mushroom hunters. There are no old, bold mushroom hunters!”

Trump hammers China over virus as U.S. health secretary heads to Taiwan

U.S. President Donald Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday intensified his attacks on China for its handling of the novel coronavirus outbreak that has killed over 700,000 people worldwide, as his health secretary headed to Taiwan for a visit sure to irk Beijing.

Trump, whose public approval ratings have fallen amid continued COVID-19 infection rates and economic woes, sought to shift the focus to Beijing, claiming again, without evidence, that it may have intentionally let the virus spread globally.

The Republican president, who is trailing Democrat Joe Biden in national polls ahead of the Nov. 3 election, said it was a “disgrace” that Beijing had limited the spread of the virus at home but allowed it to reach the rest of the world.

“What China did is a terrible thing ... whether it was incompetence or on purpose,” he said, as his administration continued to crack down on Chinese firms and exports.

Biden on Wednesday said a Phase 1 U.S.-trade deal signed in January by the world’s two largest economies was “failing” after Commerce Department data showed the U.S.-China trade deficit widened 5% to $28.4 billion in June.

Trump signed an executive order Thursday aimed at yanking back supply chains from China for key ingredients and supplies used to make medicines and medical equipment.

Top advisers also have urged the president to delist Chinese companies that trade on U.S. exchanges and fail to meet U.S. auditing requirements by January 2022.

Already high tensions could spike further when starting Sunday Trump’s health secretary, Alex Azar, visits Taiwan, which Beijing considers a renegade province. China has already threatened “strong countermeasures.”

Azar will be the highest-level U.S. official to visit the island in four decades. Washington broke off official ties with Taipei in 1979 in favor of Beijing but is now moving to sell Taiwan at least four of its large sophisticated aerial drones.

Monsoon currents are expected to penetrate in Sindh

a monsoon low pressure from the Bay of Bengal is likely to approach Sindh today
The MET Office has forecast heavy rainfall in Sindh, South Punjab and eastern parts of Balochistan from today till Saturday along with a warning of urban flooding for Karachi and Hyderabad.

According to the MET Office, a monsoon low pressure from the Bay of Bengal is likely to approach Sindh today in the evening or night. “Under the influence of this weather system strong monsoon currents are expected to penetrate in Sindh, South Punjab and Eastern Balochistan from Thursday to Saturday,” the MET Office said.

Widespread rain/wind-thundershowers, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Tharparker, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Tando Allah Yar, Matiyari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Jamshoro, Dadu and Shaheed Benazirabad from today till the next three days.

Mainly hot and humid weather is expected in most parts of the country during the next 12 hours, while rain-wind-thundershowers are expected in South Punjab, Sindh and eastern Balochistan.

The MET Office has also warned that the heavy downpour may result in urban flooding in Karachi and Hyderabad with around 100 to 130 millimetres of rain expected in Karachi.

Keeping the threat of urban flooding in mind, the National Disaster Management Authority earlier this week enhanced its scope of operations to other parts of Karachi to unclog the city's nullahs and drains before the fourth spell of rain wreaks havoc in the city.

Karachi MET Director Abdul Qayyum Bhutto told The News, the weather in the city will be very hot and humid today before a strong monsoon system results in heavy rains by evening or night.

The temperature is expected to rise up to 39 to 41 degrees Celsius, with 70-80% humidity. This will be followed by a thunderstorm with rain and gusty winds,” Bhutto said.

He added the maximum temperature recorded in the city on Wednesday was 36.6°C, but due to 65% humidity, it would feel as if the temperature was higher.

“The same conditions will prevail today, as very hot and humid weather is expected the entire day until the rain starts with a thunderstorm and gusty winds”, he added.

Facebook and Twitter took aim at US President and his campaign

children are “almost immune” to the coronavirus, a claim they said amounted to “misinformation.”
Facebook and Twitter took aim at US President Donald Trump and his campaign Wednesday over a video post.

In which he contended that children are “almost immune” to the coronavirus, a claim they said amounted to “misinformation.”

In an extraordinary move, Facebook removed the clip from the president’s account — the first time it has taken down one of his posts for violating its content rules.

The video an excerpt from a Fox News interview “includes false claims that a group of people is immune from COVID-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful COVID misinformation,” a Facebook spokesperson told AFP.

Twitter meanwhile said it had blocked Trump’s official campaign account over a tweet containing the same video, in which Trump made the case for reopening US schools come September.

A spokesperson for the San Francisco-based service told AFP the tweet was “in violation of the Twitter rules on COVID-19 misinformation,” adding that the campaign would have to remove it before being allowed to tweet again.

Soon thereafter, the @TeamTrump account was active, suggesting the contested video had been taken down.

“Another day, another display of Silicon Valley’s flagrant bias against this president, where the rules are only enforced in one direction,” the Trump campaign’s deputy national press secretary Courtney Parella said in a statement.

“The president was stating a fact that children are less susceptible to the coronavirus,” she said. “Social media companies are not the arbiters of truth.”

– Deeply contentious –

Health officials have urged people of all age groups to protect themselves against exposure to the coronavirus.

Trump defended his comments about the virus’s effect on children when challenged during a White House press briefing earlier Wednesday.

“I’m talking about from getting very sick,” Trump said.

“If you look at children I mean they are able to throw it off very easily.”

How likely children are to contract or spread the coronavirus has become a deeply contentious issue in the US, with reopening schools essential to enabling many parents to go back to work.

Trump has been calling for both businesses and schools to reopen as part of a push to revive the US economy, whose health will play a major factor in the coming presidential election.

A growing number of US school districts have opted however against in-person classes come September, opting to remain online-only until the pandemic has abated.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has concluded that children appear to transmit COVID-19 less than adults, and that many schools could re-open in the months ahead provided they take precautions such as social distancing and tracking local transmission rates.

Children are known to be far less likely to fall seriously ill or die from the virus: less than one percent of children who test positive for COVID-19 end up dying, according to a Europe-wide study released in June.

The study authors said the true percentage is likely much lower still, since many children with mild or no symptoms would not have been tested at all.

– Medical speculation –

Facebook’s move came as it faces intense pressure to clamp down on misinformation which has flourished during the pandemic including from world leaders, until recently protected by its hands-off policy on political speech.

A coalition of activists has pressed Facebook to be more aggressive in removing hateful content and misinformation with 1,000 advertisers joining a boycott aiming to ramp up the pressure.

The social media giant had placed a disclaimer last month on a post from Trump claiming mail-in voting would lead to a “corrupt” election, and in June it removed ads by Trump’s campaign containing a symbol used by Nazi Germany.

Trump has been repeatedly accused of spreading misinformation about the coronavirus pandemic which has killed more than 150,000 Americans including the now-infamous musing that virus victims could perhaps be injected with disinfectant.

After a brief change in tone last month, he recently reverted to medical speculation, criticizing his own top virus expert — and praising an eccentric preacher-doctor touting conspiracy theories.

Twitter last week took the rare step of removing clips tweeted by Trump from a video earlier deleted by Facebook in which the doctor-preacher Stella Immanuel and a group of doctors proclaimed that masks are unnecessary and that hydroxychloroquine can defeat the coronavirus.

OIC should pay immediate attention to kashmir issue:FM Qureshi

Pakistan was always ready to sacrifice for the security and protection of Saudi Arabia
FM Shah Mahmood Qureshi has urged the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and Muslim ummah to come together on the Kashmir issue.

Pakistan was always ready to sacrifice for the security and protection of Saudi Arabia and it was time they did the same.

Speaking to a private news channel, Qureshi said Pakistan was not in favour of aggression, but was fully prepared and would retaliate effectively if India indulged in any misadventure.

“If there is any misadventure, we will not have any choice but to retaliate.

The world should understand that Pakistan will have to react,” he said.

Responding to a question about India diverting the world’s attention, the foreign minister said, they could not rule out that possibility.

“Anything or any drama can be expected from India’s Modi government which is desperate and adventurist. But Inshaallah we are ready and prepared to respond effectively,” he remarked.

To a question about any back-channel contacts with India on the issues like Siachen and Sir Creek, he replied in the negative, adding, no talks could be held in such an environment.

“Sitting with the government of Narendra Modi lis tantamount to wastage of time,” he said.

The foreign minister added that Modi had lost the battle of “hearts and minds” in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir adding that the just freedom struggle of Kashmiris could be suppressed through force.

Commenting on the laying of the foundation stone by the Indian prime minister for the construction of Ram Mandir at the site of historical Babri mosque.

He said it would further hurt the soul of Muslims who were already being discriminated by various actions of the Modi government in India.

FM Qureshi said the entire Pakistan, including the government, opposition and all political forces were on the same page on the issue of Kashmir and stood with its people in their freedom struggle and their just right to self-determination.

'Unspeakable horror': Japan marks 75th anniversary of Hiroshima bombing

But the general public was kept away, with the ceremony instead broadcast online
Japan marked 75 years since the world's first atomic bomb with a sombre ceremony on Thursday to remember the victims of Hiroshima bombing.

Survivors, relatives and a handful of foreign dignitaries attended this year's main event in Hiroshima to pray for those killed or wounded in the bombing and call for world peace.

But the general public was kept away, with the ceremony instead broadcast online.

Participants, many of them dressed in black and wearing face masks, offered a silent prayer at exactly 8:15am, the time the first nuclear weapon used in wartime was dropped over the city.

Speaking afterwards, Hiroshima mayor Kazumi Matsui warned against the nationalism that led to World War II and urged the world to come together to face global threats, like the coronavirus pandemic.

"We must never allow this painful past to repeat itself. Civil society must reject self-centred nationalism and unite against all threats," he said.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has been criticised by some for his attempts to revise a key pacifist clause of the country's constitution, pledged in his address to "do my best for the realisation of a world without nuclear weapons and peace for all time".

And UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who addressed the gathering by video message because of the pandemic, warned that "the only way to totally eliminate nuclear risk is to totally eliminate nuclear weapons".

The bomb attack on Hiroshima killed around 140,000 people, many of them instantly, with others perishing in the weeks and months that followed, suffering radiation sickness, devastating burns and other injuries.

Three days later, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, where 74,000 people were killed.

'No one can escape'

Many of the traditionally sombre events to mark the anniversary have been cancelled because of the pandemic, a global threat that carries an all-too-familiar fear for some survivors, including 83-year-old Keiko Ogura, who lived through the Hiroshima bombing.

With the outbreak of the virus, "I recall the fear I felt right after the bombing... no one can escape", she told journalists last month.

She too urged people around the world to recognise the need to fight common challenges as one.

"Whether it's the coronavirus or nuclear weapons, the way to overcome it is through solidarity among mankind," she said.

The landmark anniversary this year underscores the dwindling number of bomb survivors, known in Japan as "hibakusha", many of whom suffered physically and psychologically after the attack.

Those who remain were mostly infants or young children at the time, and their work to keep the memory of the bombings alive and call for a ban on nuclear weapons has taken on increasing urgency as they age.

Activists and survivors have created archives of everything from the recorded testimony of hibakusha to their poems and drawings.

But many fear interest in the bombings is fading as they recede beyond the horizon of lived experience and into history.

'Unspeakable horror'

"Just storing a pile of records... is meaningless," said Kazuhisa Ito, the secretary general of No More Hibakusha Project, an NGO that compiles documents and testimonial accounts from survivors.

"What we want is to engage young people with this issue and exchange views with them, globally," he told AFP.

The historical assessment of the bombings remains the subject of some controversy. The United States has never apologised for the bombings, which many see as having brought an end to the war.

Japan announced its surrender just days later on August 15, 1945, and some historians argue the bombings ultimately saved lives by avoiding a land invasion that might have been significantly more deadly.

But in Japan, the attacks are widely regarded as war crimes because they targeted civilians indiscriminately and caused unprecedented destruction.

In 2016, Barack Obama became the first sitting US president to visit Hiroshima, where he offered no apology but embraced survivors and called for a world free of nuclear weapons.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were key stops on Pope Francis's first trip to Japan last year, where he denounced the "unspeakable horror" of the attacks.

The spokesperson of military’s media wing confirmed that one FC soldier was martyred in the cross-border firing from Afghanistan side and two others were injured.

Mortar and heavy weapons were used in the firing from across the Afghan border, added ISPR.

Earlier on July 30, the reports of casualties and injuries had emerged from Chaman where protestors stormed a border post at Pak-Afghan border.

According to Levies officials, the protestors of a sit-in had stormed a border crossing at Friendship Gate at Pakistan-Afghanistan’s Chaman border, vandalising a quarantine centre.

UK new car sales rise for first time in 2020

The group has been lobbying for additional support for the sector
British new car registrations rose by an annual 11.3% in July, the only increase so far this year as showrooms across the whole of the United Kingdom were open for their first full month since lockdown measures eased.

The rise followed other signs of a gradual recovery in Britain’s economy after its historic 25% contraction in March and April. House prices and manufacturing have risen although jobs cuts are mounting in the retail sector.

Dealerships reopened their doors to customers on June 1 in England, June 8 in Northern Ireland, June 22 in Wales and June 29 in Scotland after being closed since mid-March.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, an industry body, cautioned that pent-up demand had boosted the 174,887 sales recorded in July.

“By the end of September we should have a clearer picture of whether or not this is a long-term trend,” SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said.

The group has been lobbying for additional support for the sector, including a possible scrappage scheme.

July’s increase in sales was the first since December but year-to-date demand is down just over 40% and the latest forecast by SMMT predicts a full-year drop of around 30% in 2020.

As good as gold? Precious metal shines again

Treasury yields and expectations of more stimulus measures for the pandemic-ravaged global economy.
Gold jumped to a record high on Wednesday, pushing further past the $2,000 mark in the face of a weak dollar, falling U.S.

Treasury yields and expectations of more stimulus measures for the pandemic-ravaged global economy.

European stocks opened higher , aided by a batch of positive earnings. U.S. equity futures ESc1 1YMc1 rose too, indicating a firm open for Wall Street, while MSCI’s broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside of Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS rose 0.7% to a 6-1/2 month peak.

But it was the relentless rally in gold that held the spotlight as prices hit a fresh record high at around $2,039 per ounce XAU.

The precious metal, which has soared more than 30% this year, is benefiting from heightened uncertainty around the long-term effects of the global health crisis.

Weakness in the dollar and falling U.S. Treasury yields have encouraged investors to look for alternative store of value boosting the appeal of gold.

“What we’re seeing at the moment with the dollar, bond yields and gold are macro trades of concern – not just about the coronavirus but also about the fiscal cliff in the U.S.,” said Seema Shah, chief strategist at Principal Global Investors in London.

“There are real concerns that without a deal, we will be looking at a very tough fourth quarter for the U.S. economy and therefore the global economy.”

White House negotiators on Tuesday vowed to work “around the clock” with congressional Democrats to try to reach a deal on coronavirus relief by the end of this week, as the pandemic takes a heavy toll on American life.

The global death toll from the coronavirus surpassed 700,000 on Wednesday, according to a Reuters tally, with the United States, Brazil, India and Mexico leading the rise in fatalities.

MORE STIMULUS EXPECTED

This backdrop has boosted expectations for more stimulus, with the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco saying on Tuesday that the U.S. economy will need more support than initially thought.

The five-year Treasury yield hit a record low on Tuesday and the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell to a five-month low at around 0.51% US10YT=RR, holding near those levels on Wednesday.

In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei dipped 0.26% .N225 and Australia’s benchmark index slipped 0.6%, notable underperformers in otherwise generally upbeat Asian stock markets. South Korea’s Kospi .KSII hit its highest level since October 2018.

“Significantly increased odds” of more monetary policy stimulus from the U.S. Federal Reserve is a key driver of equities although the rally has been reined in by stretched valuations, Mizuho analysts wrote in a note.

The dollar remained under pressure.

A hardening perception that the U.S. economic recovery is lagging Europe has buttressed the euro, pushing it above $1.19 in the last couple of days.

The common currency last traded up 0.1% at $1.1815 EUR=EBS. Most other major currencies were also up against the dollar, pushing its index towards last week’s two-year low of 92.53 =USD.

“The ongoing fall in U.S. real yields is helping to lift the price of gold and weakening the U.S. dollar,” said Lee Hardman, currency analyst at MUFG, adding that the bank had lowered its forecasts for the dollar on the assumption that the Federal Reserve will loosen policy further this year.

In commodities, oil prices rose with Brent crude LCOc1 up 0.9% at $44.43 a barrel. U.S. crude CLc1 also added 0.9% to $42.06.
