Addressing a press conference, FATF president said Pakistan had made progress towards money laundering and terror financing.

“The FATF strongly urges Pakistan to swiftly complete its full action plan by February 2020,” the global watch dog said in a statement.

“Otherwise, should significant and sustainable progress not be made across the full range of its action plan by the next Plenary, the FATF will take action.”

PCB removes Sarfaraz Ahmed as skipper in Test, T20 formats

Sarfaraz Ahmed
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has removed Sarfaraz Ahmed as skipper in the Test and Twenty20 formats due to "drop in overall form", a press release issued by the cricketing body said on Friday.

Batsman Azhar Ali will replace the wicket-keeper to captain the team in the upcoming Tests against Australia as well as the World Test Championship in the 2019-20 season.

Similarly, batsman Babar Azam will lead Pakistan in T20 matches against Australia and in the 2020 T20 World Cup.

Ahmed has also been "left out of both formats", the statement added, citing the wicketkeeper's poor form "which has also affected his confidence". There has been no announcement regarding changes in the squad for one-day internationals.

The decision comes weeks after Pakistan the top-ranked T20 team was whitewashed by an inexperienced Sri Lanka team in Lahore.

Reports regarding Ahmed's removal from the position of skipper have been circulating since Pakistan's dismal performance in the Cricket World Cup earlier this year.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani termed the decision to remove Ahmed as "difficult", but one that had to be taken "in the best interest of the team".

"It has been an honour to lead Pakistan at the highest level," Ahmed was quoted as saying in the press release. "I want to thank all my colleagues, coaches and selectors who have helped me in this journey.

"My good wishes are with Azhar Ali, Babar Azam and the Pakistan cricket team, and I hope they will continue to grow stronger and stronger."

Ali, who made his Test debut in 2010, termed it the "biggest honour" to lead the team in the longest format and said: "I feel humbled, excited and privileged, and with the support of the team, look forward to justifying the faith that has been entrusted upon me for the World Test Championship."

He credited Ahmed for doing an "excellent job in transforming raw talent into experienced players" and added: "I now look forward to inspiring those skillful players in our endeavours to collectively achieve our World Test Championship objectives and beyond.

"I am not only targeting wins, but also aim to provide opportunities to players to grow in stature and express themselves so that Pakistan cricket can resume its [top position]. I have always played my cricket the hard way but in a fair manner, and will ensure I continue to uphold the spirit of cricket and enhance the image of the team and the country."

The petition was submitted by Advocate Nadeem Sarwar in the high court, stating that Maulana Fazlur Rehman is willing to lodge sit-in in the federal capital to void the process of seminaries’ reformations.

It is stated that a government could not be ended before completing its tenure of five years in accordance with the Constitution of Pakistan. The petition also stated that armed groups have been created by the JUI-F supremo in the name of security of the protests.

The petitioner sought the high court to order the authorities to stop Maulana Fazl from organising the sit-ins.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had given its observation that peaceful citizens could not be deprived of their right to protest, but the state may restrain a person from exercising this right on the grounds of national security.

It added that the organisers and participants of the protest had the obligation to remain peaceful, unarmed, and to comply with the law.

Disposing of the petitions, the court observed that it was the State’s responsibility to ensure the rights of all citizens.

The IHC had previously ordered the capital administration to earmark a place for holding of protests in Islamabad so that netizens won’t have to face any kind of hardship.

On Oct. 3, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman announced that the “Azadi March” will begin on October 27 after staging protest demonstration to express solidarity with the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir.

35 expat pilgrims dead in Saudi bus crash near Madina

35 expat pilgrims dead in Saudi bus crash near Madina
Thirty-five foreigners were killed and four others injured when a bus collided with another heavy vehicle near Madina, Saudi state media said on Thursday.

The accident on Wednesday took place on Hijra road, 170 km from Madina, when a privately chartered bus carrying 39 passengers collided with a loader, a spokesman for Madina police said, according to the official Saudi Press Agency.

Those on the bus were expats in the Kingdom and of Asian and Arab nationalities, reported Arab News.

The injured have been transferred to Al-Hamna Hospital, SPA added, and authorities have launched an investigation.

The accident comes after four British pilgrims were killed and 12 others injured in Saudi Arabia when their bus collided with a fuel tanker in April 2018. They were on their way to Makkah.

In January 2017, six Britons, including a two-month-old baby, were killed in a minibus on their way to Madina after making a pilgrimage to Makkah.

As part of efforts to diversify its oil-dependent economy, the ultra-conservative kingdom wants to foster a year-round religious tourism sector that includes millions of pilgrims.

Up until last month, the country only issued visas to Muslim pilgrims, foreign workers and recently to spectators at sporting or cultural events, but tourists are now allowed to visit as part of the drive to prepare the biggest Arab economy for a post-oil era.

We will never abandon people of occupied Kashmir, says Army chief during LoC visit

Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa
Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa while visiting troops stationed along the Line of Control (LoC) on Wednesday vowed "to never leave Kashmiris alone" in their fight against Indian oppression.

“Kashmiris in IOJ&K are bravely facing Indian atrocities under continued siege. We shall never leave them alone and play our rightful role at whatever cost”, said Gen Bajwa.

Gen Bajwa's remarks followed a briefing of the "deliberate targeting of civilians" by Indian troops and the response by Pakistan's armed forces.

A day earlier, at least three civilians died and eight others were injured in Azad Jammu and Kashmir after Indian troops resorted to “indiscriminate” shelling from across LoC.

The heavily militarised LoC which splits the disputed region of Kashmir between India and Pakistan has been constantly witnessing ceasefire violations by the Indian army in a serious breach of a November 2003 truce agreement.

According to Syed Shahid Mohyiddin Qadri, secretary civil defence and state disaster management authority, the latest ceasefire violations have pushed the civilian death toll in the current year to 47.

Apart from them, another 236 civilians sustained injuries in the ongoing year, he said.

Qadri said some 50 houses had also been destroyed and 369 houses and nine shops partially damaged due to Indian shelling.

Aside from the above, 11 cattle sheds, four schools, two health facilities, one mosque and 12 vehicles also suffered partial damages.

JUIF chief says no talks with govt until PM resigns

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has ruled out any possibility of talks with the government.

The maulana said negotiations with the government can take place only after the prime minister resigns.

His statement comes shortly after Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the government has formed a committee to hold talks with the JUI-F.

Speaking to the media, he said Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak would lead the committee.

Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said his party has decided to throw weight behind Maulana Fazlur Rehman and support his decision going against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government.

Bilawal while speaking to media in Rato Dero reiterated: “PPP thinks government will have to go."

He said a lot of people have been rendered jobless under a conspiracy and the government is now planning to deprive more people of employment by closing 400 departments.

“Fawad Chaudhry’s narrative is the actual policy of Khan Saheb,” he said in a reference to the Science and Technology Minister’s recent statement.

The minister was reported to have said that government was not responsible for providing jobs.

But the minister later rejected the reports saying he was talking about government jobs only.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) leader Ahsan Iqbal said his party supports Maulana Fazlur Rehman's demand for the prime minister's resignation.

Calling for fresh election, he said sending the government home was vital to protect the country.

PTI to form committee under Pervez Khattak to approach JUI-F

 Defence Minister Pervez Khattak
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government has decided to form a committee under Defence Minister Pervez Khattak to hold talks with Jamait Ulema-e-Islam Fazl, as the latter is set to march to the capital against the government, it emerged on Wednesday.

The core committee session of the ruling PTI was held under Prime Minister Imran Khan today, where the matter related to the upcoming march was discussed.

The PTI government has formed a four-member committee to deal with the issue of the march under the JUI-F, sources had informed earlier, although PTI leader and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi confirmed the news during his media talk later.

The four members will be party representatives from the four provinces and their names will be finalised today. The committee will also approach the opposition parties, sources had said.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Imran Khan is of the opinion that there is no harm in holding talks with the JUI-F to reach a political solution.

The committee under Khattak will in its capacity decide whether to hold talks or proceed accordingly.

Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Wednesday said his party has decided to throw weight behind Maulana Fazlur Rehman and support his decision going against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government.

India appears to have failed in bid to get Pakistan blacklisted by FATF

 FATF
The Pakistani delegation currently visiting Paris met with the representatives of different member countries and organizations of 39-member Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to secure support against an Indian bid to get Pakistan in the FATF blacklist.

The Pakistani authorities are confident that everything is under control, as China, Malaysia and Turkey have assured them of all out support in case India or any other country presents a resolution for getting Pakistan on the blacklist.

So far, even the GCC countries and Saudi Arabia have supported Pakistan. Top official sources told this reporter that the FATF’s ongoing meeting would continue till October 18 [at Paris] during which a final decision would be made.

Ahead of the FATF’s review meeting, the findings of Joint Working Group (JWG) were shared with the Pakistani authorities, showing Islamabad to be largely compliant on 10 points, partially compliant on another 10 points, and non-compliant on seven, mainly related to proscribed organisations on account of investigation, prosecutions and conviction from court of law.

The five-member Pakistani delegation led by Minister for Economic Affairs Hammad Azhar participated in the review meeting along with top military officials, including DG Financial Monitoring Unit and a Foreign Office representative.

All stakeholders were unanimous and on the same page that Pakistan worked hard to comply with all 27 points within the envisaged deadline and made good progress. Authorities are confident that the FATF will not give a new action plan.

Pakistan has taken significant steps towards improving relations with the US and progress in this direction would yield positive results. On merit, official sources say that Pakistan should be excluded from grey list and put into green or white list as Islamabad has made impressive progress on at least 20 out of 27 FATC action plan points.

However, the official sources say that the FATF might maintain Pakistan’s grey-list status for an extended period of 6 to 12 months, but in such a scenario, there will be no new action plan. Islamabad might be asked to continue to ensure compliance on 17 points, on which the country made partial or little progress, for the next one year.

A top official said that Indian side might plunge into one-sided propaganda without waiting of the final outcome of the meeting because they have nothing to lose, but in case of Pakistan, the country’s economy would be at serious threat in case of falling into blacklist, so authorities are very careful on making any statements.

Further, the royal couple flew near the Afghan border to visit a remote Hindu Kush glacier as well, after they spent their morning in Pakistan's mountainous north.

According to details, Kate and William will be travelling to the Hindu Kush valley today. They will also visit the Chiatibo Glacier in Broghil National Park to see the devastating effects of climate change.

On Tuesday, they visited Islamabad Model College for Girls to highlight higher education for women. They dropped in on a mathematics class, where televised images showed them sitting with some of the young students, whose blue uniforms matched the Duchess's dress.

A video tweeted by a British reporter accompanying the couple showed William smiling as he was told the girls were "big fans" of his mother, who died in a car crash in 1997.

"That's very sweet of you," he could be heard saying in the video. "I was a big fan of my mother too."

Later, William and Kate visited Margalla Hills National Park to set a leopard camera trap with children.

The Royal couple then had meetings with President Dr Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan and attended a "glittering reception," which was hosted by British High Commissioner in Pakistan, Tom Drew, at Islamabad's National Monument where they arrived, to Pakistanis' delight, in a brightly decorated rickshaw.

Farooq Abdullah's sister, daughter detained for holding 'anti-India protest' in Srinagar

Farooq Abdullah's sister, daughter detained
Police in India-occupied Kashmir detained at least 12 women, including the sister and daughter of former occupied Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah, for holding an anti-India protest, officials said on Tuesday.

The women, carrying placards reading “Respect Fundamental Rights” and “Why downgrade Jammu and Kashmir,” assembled on Tuesday in a park in Srinagar, the main city in the region.

Police whisked them away to a nearby police station as they tried to march through the main business area of Lal Chowk. They were likely to be released later in the day.

The protest came a day after India said it has restored call facilities on post-paid cellphone connections in occupied Kashmir after more than two months of a communications blackout.

However, the ban on more than 2 million prepaid mobile connections and internet services will continue, it said.

According to NDTV, besides Abdullah's sister Suraiya Abdullah and his daughter Safia Abdullah Khan, the wife of former occupied Jammu and Kashmir chief justice Bashir Ahmed Khan, Hawa Bashir, has also been detained.

Other protesters included prominent women activists and academicians.

Abdullah, 81, had been under house arrest in Srinagar since early August when India stripped occupied Kashmir of its autonomy, imposed a security lockdown and detained dozens of politicians including those who back the region being part of India. But on September 16, he was formally arrested under the Public Safety Act (PSA) and his home turned into a “judicial lockup”.

His son, Omar Abdullah, is being held at a state guest house.

In addition to Farooq and Omar Abdullah, former chief minister and People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti is another prominent leader put in detention by the occupied Jammu and Kashmir administration.

US slaps sanctions on Turkey over incursion, demands Syria ceasefire

US slaps sanctions on Turkey over incursion
US President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on Turkey and demanded that the Nato ally stop a military incursion in northeast Syria that is rapidly reshaping the battlefield of the world’s deadliest ongoing war.

Trump — who gave what critics say was a de facto green light for Turkey’s assault by ordering US forces away from the conflict area — requested the ceasefire in a call with President Tayyip Erdogan.

“The United States of America simply is not going to tolerate Turkey’s invasion in Syria any further. We are calling on Turkey to stand down, end the violence and come to the negotiating table,” US Vice President Mike Pence told reporters on Monday.

Trump also announced plans to reimpose steel tariffs on Turkey and immediately halt negotiations on a $100 billion trade deal.

The move was quickly criticised as too little, too late by the top Democrat in Congress.

“His announcement of a package of sanctions against Turkey falls very short of reversing that humanitarian disaster,” said US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Turkey aims to neutralise the Kurdish YPG militia, the main element of Washington’s Kurdish-led ally, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which has been a key US ally in dismantling the jihadist “caliphate” set up by Islamic State militants in Syria.

Ankara regards the YPG as a terrorist group aligned with Kurdish insurgents in Turkey.

Russia-backed Syrian forces on Monday took rapid advantage of the abrupt US retreat in Syria to deploy deep inside territory held by US-backed Kurdish forces south of the Turkish frontier. Washington had announced plans for a full withdrawal from northern Syria less than 24 hours earlier.

Washington’s Kurdish former allies said they invited in the government troops as an emergency step to help fend off the Turkish assault, launched on Wednesday after what the Kurds called a US betrayal.

The Syrian army deployment is a victory for President Bashar al-Assad and his most powerful ally, Russia, giving them a foothold in the biggest remaining swath of the country that had been beyond their grasp.

They will now face Turkish armed forces along a new front line hundreds of miles (km) long.

Syrian state media reported the army entered Manbij, a town that had been controlled by a militia allied to the Kurds. Earlier, it pushed into Tel Tamer, a town on the strategically important M4 highway that runs east-west around 30 km (19 miles) south of the frontier with Turkey.

State television later showed residents welcoming Syrian forces into the town of Ain Issa, which lies on another part of the highway, hundreds of miles away.

Ain Issa commands the northern approaches to Raqqa, former capital of the Islamic State 'caliphate', which Kurdish fighters recaptured from the militants two years ago in one of the biggest victories of a US-led campaign.

Much of the M4 skirts the southern fringe of territory where Turkey aims to set up a “safe zone” inside Syria. Turkey said it had seized part of the highway. An official of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said clashes were ongoing.

US strategy unravelling

The swift Syrian government deployments underscored how suddenly the strategy the United States had pursued in Syria for the past five years had unraveled. Washington said on Sunday it was pulling out its entire force of 1,000 troops, which had provided air support, ground assistance and training for Syrian Kurds against Islamic State since 2014.

Trump said US troops would remain at a small garrison at Tanf in southern Syria “to continue to disrupt remnants” of Islamic State. But the base would do little to support operations elsewhere in the country.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, better known for his backing of Trump, joined his critics to express concern over the Syria pullout, saying it would “invite the resurgence” of Islamic State.

“Such a withdrawal would also create a broader power vacuum in Syria that will be exploited by Iran and Russia, a catastrophic outcome for the United States’ strategic interests,” he said in a statement.

A US official said on Monday a diplomatic team working to help stabilise territory captured from Islamic State had already pulled out. US troops were still on the ground but early phases of their withdrawal had started, the official said.

Two other US officials have told Reuters the bulk of the US pullout could be completed within days.

The Trump administration has denied its troop pullback triggered the Turkish incursion.

“I can tell you with complete confidence that nothing that we did one way or the other was going to deter the Turks from what they wanted to do,” a senior Trump administration official said.

US partners

Thousands of fighters from a Kurdish-led force have died since 2014 battling Islamic State in partnership with the United States, a strategy the Trump administration had continued after inheriting it from his predecessor, Barack Obama.

“After the Americans abandoned the region and gave the green light for the Turkish attack, we were forced to explore another option, which is talks with Damascus and Moscow to find a way out and thwart these Turkish attacks,” senior Kurdish official Badran Jia Kurd said. Jia Kurd described the new arrangement with Assad’s forces as a “preliminary military agreement”, and said political aspects would be discussed later.

It remains to be seen how the Kurds will be treated now. Kurdish fighters began carving out autonomous rule in Syria’s northeast early in its eight-year-old war, benefiting from diversions of Assad’s military to fight elsewhere. Assad aims to restore his government’s authority across all of the country.

Senior Kurdish politician Aldar Xelil called the pact with Damascus “an emergency measure”. “The priority now is protecting the border’s security from the Turkish danger.”

Trump says he aims to extract the United States from “endless” wars in the Middle East.

“Anyone who wants to assist Syria in protecting the Kurds is good with me, whether it is Russia, China, or Napoleon Bonaparte,” Trump wrote on Twitter earlier on Monday. “I hope they all do great, we are 7,000 miles away!”

One officer martyred, 10 others injured as blast targets police vehicle in Quetta
At least one person died in an explosion Tuesday here at the city's Double Road, officials confirmed, adding that 10 others were injured in the blast.

The blast occurred near a police vehicle, officials added, noting that the explosive material was installed in a motorcycle and that the deceased was a police officer.

PM Imran arrives in Saudi Arabia after meeting Iranian leadership

Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived in Saudi Arabia
Prime Minister Imran Khan arrived in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday in a bid to de-escalate tensions between Tehran and Riyadh.

"The prime minister will confer with the Saudi leadership in light of his recent consultations with other leaders. Bilateral ties and other regional developments would also form part of the discussions," a statement by the Foreign Office earlier said.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are bound in a fraternal relationship marked by mutual trust and understanding, close cooperation and an abiding tradition of supporting each other, the statement added.

This would be PM Imran's third visit to Saudi Arabia this year. His earlier visits were in May and September 2019. From the Saudi side, HRH Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman paid a state visit to Pakistan in February 2019.

On Sunday, the prime minister travelled to Iran where he reiterated that Pakistan was ready to act as a facilitator between Iran and Saudi Arabia so that the two countries can sort out differences through dialogue.

“Pakistan does not want conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia...I am happy to facilitate talks between Tehran and Riyadh...I am very hopeful as I had constructive talks with the (Iranian) president,” PM Imran told a joint news conference with President Hassan Rouhani.

He added Pakistan had hosted Saudi Arabia and Iran and was again willing to facilitate them again to iron out their differences. “The issue is complex one but it is possible to sort out differences through dialogue,” he emphasised.

The prime minister also made it clear that Pakistan’s role would be a facilitator and not a mediator.

He stressed that it was imperative for everyone not to allow any conflict to take place in the region as he viewed certain vested interests which wanted to flare up the tensions in the region.

The prime minister had termed his consultations with the Iranian president as very encouraging and said that he would go to Saudi Arabia with a positive mind.

PM Imran also met Iranian Supreme Leader Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei during his day-long visit.

Responding to the message of unity and solidarity among the Muslim nations given out by PM Imran, Khamenei tweeted: "Iran sees #Pakistan as a neighbouring brother."

"With this unprecedented opportunity, the relations of the two countries should be better than what they currently are," he added.

"Security of the borders should be enhanced, and suspended projects like the gas pipeline should be completed," said the Iranian Supreme Leader.

During the meeting with Khamenei, PM Imran thanked Iran for support to the people of occupied Kashmir for their right of self-determination against Indian aggression.

The premier had also noted that Pakistan would do whatever was possible to help lift the sanctions on Iran and set up the deal on a nuclear agreement.

Last month, the premier had held a bilateral meeting with the Iranian president on the sidelines of the 74th UN General Assembly session in New York. He said both the United States and Saudi Arabia had asked him to mediate with Iran to defuse tensions in the Gulf.

There have been a spate of still-unexplained attacks on oil shipping in and around the vital seaway involving Iran and Western powers, as well as drone attacks on the Saudi oil installations. Washington has accused Iran of attacking the vessels with mines as well as of being behind the drone assault — a charge Tehran strongly denies.

PM Imran hosts Prince William, Kate Middleton at Prime Minister House

PM Imran hosts Prince William, Kate Middleton at Prime Minister House
Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Prince William and Kate Middleton met Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday.

The couple — who are the first royals to officially visit Pakistan since Prince Charles and his wife Camilla visited the region in 2006 — were received by the premier at the Prime Minister House, where a lunch was hosted in honour of the guests.

William's late mother, Diana, was a friend of the prime minister and visited Pakistan twice — 1996 and 1997 — to help raise awareness and funds for the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital.

Prior to meeting the prime minister, the couple was welcomed by President Arif Alvi and his wife Samina Arif at Aiwan-i-Sadr.

Middleton, who earlier donned a royal blue kurta, changed into a green and white ensemble for the formal receptions.

The royal couple was accompanied by Thomas Drew, the British High Commissioner to Pakistan; Simon Case, the Principal Private Secretary to the Duke; and Christian Jones, the Communications Secretary to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The president commended the visiting dignitaries for their endeavors to raise awareness about mental health, climate change, and poverty alleviation, said a press release by the president's secretariat.

The Duke of Cambridge thanked the president for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him and his entourage. The royal couple appreciated the initiatives undertaken by Pakistan's government to combat climate change and to alleviate poverty, added the statement.

This is the first visit of the duke and duchess to Pakistan, during which they aim to "meet as many Pakistanis as possible and build a lasting friendship with the people of the country".

The couple kicked off their engagements on the second day of their five-day trip to Pakistan with a visit to the Islamabad Model College for Girls, University Colony on Tuesday morning, where they interacted with the staff and students and visited classrooms.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who are strong advocates of girls’ education, were greeted by teachers and children on their arrival at the school.

Clips shared by British media show one of the schoolgirls telling William that "they were fans" of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. "That's very sweet of you. I was a big fan of my mother too," he replied with a smile.

After their visit to the school, they arrived at Trail 5, Margalla Hills to attend an event regarding environmental protection. Strict security arrangements were made prior to their arrival.

"In the Margalla Hills, which sit in the foothills of the Himalayas, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined children from four local schools, taking part in activities designed to educate young people on environmental protection and wildlife conservation," said Kensington Palace on Twitter.

A visit to the Pakistan National Monument is also part of the royal couple's agenda.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge arrived in Islamabad on Monday night and were received by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and his wife Mehriene Qureshi at the Nur Khan Airbase. British High Commissioner in Pakistan Thomas Drew was also present on the occasion.

Excitement built up ahead of their arrival, with ‘#RoyalVisitPakistan’ trending on Twitter and television stations airing footage from historic royal visits, including one by Prince William’s grandmother Queen Elizabeth in 1961.

Some rickshaw drivers in Lahore and Rawalpindi, a garrison city next to Islamabad, painted their vehicles with the Pakistani and British flags.

The five-day visit, which will end on October 18, has been organised at the request of the United Kingdom’s (UK) Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

According to a handout from Kensington Palace, the British royal couple will visit Islamabad, Lahore, Gilgit-Baltistan and rugged border regions to the west. The visit will span over 1,000 kilometres, and will take in Pakistan’s rich culture, its diverse communities, and its beautiful landscapes, the handout said.
