18 elephants believed to be killed after lightning strikes herd in Assam

18 elephants believed to be killed after lightning strikes herd in Assam
At least 18 elephants are believed to have been killed in India’s Assam state after a bolt of lightning hit the herd.

The incident happened in the hilly Kandali Proposed Reserve Forest in the Forest Department’s Kathiatoli Range in Nagaon district.

“The local staff said 18 elephants have died and lightning is most likely the cause,” Assam’s Chief Wildlife Warden, M.K. Yadava said while speaking to local media.

“There have been cases of lightning striking animals down. Lightning claimed five elephants in West Bengal some time ago, but this is huge,” he said.

Officials said a team of veterinary doctors and other wildlife experts have left for Kandali and are expected to reach the spot. The team is expected to examine if there are other reasons behind the death of the elephants.

Lightning has become a cause of fatalities previously and in one such instance, CCTV surveillance camera captured the horrific moment four gardeners were struck by lightning after they took shelter under a tree during a storm in India.

Footage showed a bright flash as the bolt struck from the sky and knocked three of the men down instantly. The fourth fell to the ground moments later.

All four men were hurried to a nearby hospital in Manesar. One of them, identified as 38-year-old gardener Ramprasad, died later the same day while the other three are throught to be in stable condition.

The three survivors were identified as gardeners Shivdutt and Lali and their supervisor Anil.

Sheikh Rashid lauds SOP compliance as Covid-19 positivity rate drops

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed
Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said on Saturday that the Covid-19 positivity rate had decreased due to compliance with SOPs during the Eid holidays.

In a video message, the minister said that the Pakistan Army, the National Command and Control Centre (NCOC), the police and other institutions had done a commendable job in this regard. He also recognised the efforts of the public.

"In comparison, the Indian variant of the virus has spread to the United Kingdom, and is infecting 0.4 million and claiming 4,000 lives [in India] on a daily basis. In such a situation, I applaud all the country's institutions for a job well done," he said.

Earlier today, Pakistan reported 1,531 new coronavirus cases during the last 24 hours. This is the first time the country has reported less than 2,000 infections since March 9, when 1,786 cases were reported.

According to the NCOC, 30,248 tests were conducted during the last 24 hours while 83 fatalities were reported. The total number of cases has risen to 874,751 and the death toll is 19,467.

'Shehbaz's name not on ECL'

In the video message, the minister also said that the name of PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif had not yet been placed on the no-fly list.

"There has been a lot of noise in the media regarding Shehbaz. So far his name has not been placed on the exit control list (ECL) because the summary has not yet been received from the cabinet division," he said, adding that it could come either on Monday or Tuesday.

"This is a case where the names of 14 suspects are already on the list and five people from their family are absconders in the case," he said, adding that Shehbaz was the guarantor for his brother Nawaz Sharif, who is currently in the UK.

"He was not going to London directly [...] he was going to go and quarantine in Qatar for 15 days and then proceed to the UK." The minister added that Shehbaz's medical reports had also not been received.

"Once the cabinet summary is received, the law ministry and the interior ministry will move forward in accordance with the law. It is expected that the decision will come by Monday or Tuesday," he said.

Earlier this month, the Lahore High Court granted Shehbaz permission to travel abroad once for medical treatment.

After obtaining bail, Shehbaz was about to fly to London on May 8 when an FIA team at the airport stopped him from travelling on the grounds that his name had been on the list of persons barred from leaving the country.

On May 12, the interior minister announced that a sub-committee of the federal cabinet had recommended that the name of Shehbaz be placed on the ECL, adding that the recommendation was being sent to the cabinet for a final decision.

The two foreign ministers also exchanged views about the current situation in Palestine and Masjid Al-Aqsa.

FM Qureshi condemned the indiscriminate use of force and attacks by Israeli forces in Al-Aqsa and Gaza, called for the protection of civilians, and underscored the need for the international community to take urgent steps to address the grave situation in the occupied territories.

The two foreign ministers agreed to remain in contact on the Palestine issue. They also agreed to maintain high-level bilateral exchanges and work together for the further consolidation of Pakistan-Afghanistan relations.

Pakistan marks day of solidarity with Palestine as Israel continues relentless attack

Pakistan marks day of solidarity with Palestine as Israel continues relentless attack
Protests and demonstrations were held across the country on Friday as Pakistanis expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people amid brutal attacks by Israeli forces.

Protests were held in several cities, including Lahore and Multan, where Israeli atrocities against Palestinians were strongly condemned. The protesters demanded the international community take notice of Israel's bombing of Palestinian land and its people.

During a PTI-organised protest in Lahore, party leader Ijaz Chaudhry said innocent Palestinian children were dying due to Israel's attacks and demanded the Muslim world adopt a joint strategy against Israel.

Amir Jamaat-e-Islami Punjab North Dr Tariq Saleem led a protest in Gujrat against Israeli terrorism, while the party also held a demonstration in Arifwala. Religious parties held rallies in Mandi Bahauddin and Malakwal.

Meanwhile, Special Representative for Interfaith Harmony Maulana Tahir Ashrafi said the Palestinians needed Pakistan's moral support more than its financial support. "Prime Minister [Imran Khan] has approached the leaders of Islamic countries [in this regard]."

Bombardment continues
Even today, Israel has continued to bombard the Gaza Strip with air raids and artillery shells, Al Jazeera reported, as it ramps up deployment of troops and tanks near the besieged Palestinian enclave.

Since hostilities caught pace on Monday, at least 122 Palestinians, including 31 children, have been killed and more than 900 wounded since.

"Hundreds of Palestinian families have taken shelter in United Nations-run schools in northern Gaza to escape Israeli artillery fire, with residents reporting that the Strip had experienced its most violent night," the publication reported.

A day earlier, Muslim worshippers at the Islamic Center of Passaic County in Paterson, New Jersey, celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr with masks and prayers outdoors, as the conflict between Israel and Gaza cast shadowed over the festival marking the end of Ramadan.

"We celebrate this with very, very heavy hearts because our brothers and sisters in Palestine are suffering," said mortgage broker Zaher Barkawi.

The imam of the mosque, Mohammad Qatanani, urged Israel to "stop all this anguish and oppression against our people in Palestine. It's critical for people not to live under wars, under anguish and oppression and occupation."

He said cases falling to 11/100,000 and shared a graph of the fall by Reuters.

"That’s good. Stay at it until case counts are <5/100,000 and speed up vaccinations," Dr Younus advised.

Israeli air strikes martyred 113 Palestinians, violence enters fifth day

Israeli air strikes martyred 113 Palestinians
Israel fired artillery and mounted more air strikes on Friday against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

As hostilities entered their fifth day, with no sign of abating, the Israeli military said in a statement shortly after midnight that air and ground forces were attacking the Hamas-run enclave.

Although the statement gave no further details, Israeli military affairs correspondents who are briefed regularly by the armed forces said it was not a ground invasion, and that troops were firing artillery from Israel's side of the border.

Residents of northern Gaza, near the Israeli frontier, said they had seen no sign of Israeli ground forces inside the enclave but reported heavy artillery fire and dozens of air strikes.

The number of Palestinians martyred in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 113, the Ministry of Health said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday the campaign “will take more time”. Israeli officials said Hamas "must be dealt a strong deterring blow" before any ceasefire.

The U.N. Security Council will publicly discuss the worsening violence by Israel on Sunday, diplomats said after the United States earlier objected to a meeting on Friday.

The sound of artillery fire and explosions echoed across northern and eastern parts of Gaza into early Friday morning. Witnesses said many families living in areas near the border quit their homes, some seeking shelter at United Nations-run schools.

At least 113 people were martyred in Gaza, including 31 children, over the previous four days, Palestinian medical officials said. On Thursday alone, 52 Palestinians were martyred in the enclave, the highest single-day figure since Monday.

Approval granted: Shehbaz Sharif’s name added to ECL

Shehbaz Sharif
The Interior Ministry has been directed to add PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif to the Exit Control List (ECL) after the approval from the Federal Cabinet on Thursday.

According to Ministry of Interior sources, a notification related to the decision will be issued tomorrow.

Sources said that the ministers gave go ahead through a circulation summary on the request of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

A sub-committee of the federal cabinet had recommended including Shahbaz Sharif to the ECL.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad to announce the development on Wednesday, Minister for Interior Shaikh Rasheed had said that the PML-N president may petition for a review of the decision within 15 days.

He had said the ministry will make a decision within 90 days of receiving a request for review, adding that the PML-N leader may appear in person, if he so wishes, to make the request.

Speaking in greater detail about Shahbaz's name being placed on a "blacklist", Rasheed had said that it was not the case at all.

"The court's decision came with regard to a blacklist. Shahbaz Sharif was not on a blacklist. He was [...] under an order of May 7, 2021," he said, without elaborating any further.

The interior minister had said that there are three lists used to prevent someone from travelling abroad: one is the blacklist, into which someone's name is included by the Passport Office; the second is Provincial Identification List (PNIL), into which someone's name is added by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA); and the third is the Exit Control List (ECL) into which the federal cabinet has the authority to put someone's name.

Rasheed had said that the interior ministry "received no request (for permission to travel)" and "nothing stating medical grounds", whereas past requests had cited medical grounds.

It should be noted that on May 7, the LHC had released Shahbaz Sharif on bail in a case pertaining to assets beyond means.

Later, the court also allowed him to go abroad for eight weeks on medical grounds.

However, Shahbaz Sharif was offloaded on Saturday at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal Airport from a Doha-bound flight by the immigration officials as his name was on the provincial identification list (PNIL).

The PML-N president was told he could not leave the country until the system was updated.

The federal government had also announced to file a petition against the permission granted to him to leave for abroad.

Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had said that Shahbaz’s guarantee could not be accepted as he had earlier given assurances about former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's return but nothing became of that.

Death toll of Palestinians from Israeli air strikes on Gaza reaches 48

Death toll of Palestinians from Israeli air strikes on Gaza reaches 48
Hostilities between Israel and Hamas escalated overnight, with at least 48 Palestine Muslims martyered in Gaza and five people killed in Israel in the most intensive aerial exchanges for years.

Israel carried out hundreds of air strikes in Gaza into the early hours of Wednesday.

One multi-story residential building in Gaza collapsed and another was heavily damaged after they were repeatedly hit by Israeli air strikes.

Israel said its jets had targeted and killed several Hamas intelligence leaders early on Wednesday. Other strikes targeted what the military said were rocket launch sites and Hamas offices.

It was the heaviest offensive between Israel and Hamas since a 2014 war in Gaza, and prompted international concern that the situation could spiral out of control.

U.N. Middle East peace envoy Tor Wennesland tweeted: "Stop the fire immediately. We're escalating towards a full scale war. Leaders on all sides have to take the responsibility of de-escalation.

"The cost of war in Gaza is devastating & is being paid by ordinary people. UN is working w/ all sides to restore calm. Stop the violence now," he wrote.

Into the early hours of Wednesday morning, Gazans reported their homes shaking and the sky lighting up with Israeli attacks, outgoing rockets and Israeli air defence missiles intercepting them.

Israelis ran for shelters or flattened themselves on pavements in communities more than 70 km (45 miles) up the coast and into southern Israel amid sounds of explosions as interceptor missiles streaked into the sky.

In the mixed Arab-Jewish town of Lod, near Tel Aviv, two people were killed after a rocket hit a vehicle in the area. Israeli media reported one was a 7-year-old girl.

Hamas's armed wing said it fired 210 rockets towards Beersheba and Tel Aviv in response to the bombing of the tower buildings in Gaza City.

For Israel, the militants' targeting of Tel Aviv, its commercial capital, posed a new challenge in the confrontation with the militant Hamas group, regarded as a terrorist organisation by Israel and the United States.

The violence followed weeks of tension in Jerusalem during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, with an attack by Israeli police on Palestinian worshippers in and around Al-Aqsa Mosque, on the compound revered by Jews as Temple Mount and by Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.

These escalated in recent days ahead of a – now postponed - court hearing in a case that could end with Palestinian families evicted from East Jerusalem homes claimed by Jewish settlers.

Violence has also flared in the occupied West Bank, where a 26-year-old Palestinian was killed by Israeli gunfire during stone-throwing clashes in a refugee camp near the city of Hebron.

'We stand with Gaza': PM Imran Khan reiterates support for Palestine

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday took to Twitter to reiterate his support for the people of Palestine, denouncing atrocities being committed by Israel.

The death toll from the Israeli air strikes in Gaza strip has risen to 35. The tense atmosphere in Jerusalem over the past couple of days reached a crescendo on Tuesday when Israeli planes bombed Gaza following reports of rockets being fired into Israeli territory.

Israeli forces have been attacking Palestinian worshippers with stun grenades and rubber bullets over the past several days following protests against Jewish settlements in the Sheikh Jarrah area.

The massacre invite rebuke from most Muslim countries, with PM Imran Khan tweeting his support for Palestine today as well.

"I am PM of Pakistan and #WeStandWithGaza #WeStandWithPalestine," he tweeted.

The prime minister tweeted an excerpt from what seems to be an old article of Noam Chomsky on the Palestine-Israel situation.

"You take my water, burn my olive trees, destroy my house, take my job, steal my land, imprison my father, kill my mother, bombard my country, starve us all, humiliate us all, but I am to blame: I shot a rocket back," reads the statement.

This is, by far, the heaviest exchange between Israel and Hamas since a 2014 war in Gaza, and prompted international concern that the situation could spiral out of control.

UN Middle East peace envoy Tor Wennesland tweeted: "Stop the fire immediately. We're escalating towards a full-scale war.

Diplomatic sources told AFP that Egypt and Qatar, who have mediated past Israeli-Hamas conflicts, were attempting to calm tensions.

Last week, PM Khan strongly condemned the attacks led by Israeli forces on Palestinians at the Al-Aqsa mosque, in violation of "all norms of humanity and international law".

PM Imran Khan had said that Pakistan reiterates its support for Palestinians.

He had called upon the international community to take immediate action to protect Palestinians and their legitimate rights.

A sub-committee of the federal cabinet has recommended including Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif to the Exit Control List.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad to announce the development on Wednesday, Minister for Interior Shaikh Rasheed said that Shahbaz may petition for a review of the decision within 15 days.

He said the ministry will make a decision within 90 days of receiving a request for review, adding that the PML-N leader may appear in person, if he so wishes, to make the request.

Speaking in greater detail about Shahbaz's name being placed on a "black list", Rasheed said that it was not the case at all.

"The court's decision came with regard to a black list. Shahbaz Sharif was not on a black list. He was [...] under an order of May 7, 2021," he said, without elaborating any further.

The interior minister said that there are three lists used to prevent someone from travelling abroad: one is the black list, into which someone's name in included by the Passport Office; the second is Provincial Identification List (PNIL), into which someone's name is added by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA); and the third is the Exit Control List (ECL) into which the federal cabinet has the authority to put someone's name.

He said today, at the request of the National Accountability Bureau, which is pursuing cases against the Opposition leader, a three-member sub-committee unanimously recommended to the cabinet to add Shahbaz to the ECL.

Rasheed said that the interior ministry "received no request (for permission to travel)" and "nothing stating medical grounds", whereas past requests had cited medical grounds.

Lahore NAB asks headquarters to place Shehbaz Sharif's name on ECL

PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore has written a letter to its headquarters in Islamabad, asking it to place PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif's name on the Exit-Control List (ECL).

The request was made to place Sharif's name on the no-fly list as he is being investigated in an assets beyond means case and is accused of money laundering. The former Punjab chief minister has denied all charges of wrongdoing.

However, the interior ministry officials did not confirm receiving any letter from the NAB Headquarters on the issue.

NAB Lahore wrote a letter to the DG Operations NAB Headquarters on April 28, recommending that the PML-N president be placed on the ECL as there were several investigations against him, his sons Hamza Shehbaz, Suleman Shehbaz and others, sources said.

All of the above-mentioned are being probed in assets beyond means and money laundering cases.

According to a copy of the letter, NAB Lahore stated that via order dated 22-04-2021, the Lahore High Court (LHC) granted bail to the accused Shehbaz Sharif, whereas no orders regarding the placement of his name on the ECL or asking the PML-N leader to surrender his passport have been issued.

“As the presence of the accused is required to face the trial, it is recommended that the name of Mian Shehbaz Sharif be placed on the ECL for the smooth trial of the reference no 22/2020,” the letter read.

The letter further mentioned that the NAB HQ was earlier asked to place Shehbaz Sharif's name on the ECL and whereas the Ministry of Interior was requested through letter No 3-1(1)285/L/WII/NAB/Dy Dir (ECL) dated 19.02.19 and resultantly Ministry of Interior vide letter No12/46/2019-ECL dated 21.02.2019 confirmed the placement of accused Shehbaz Sharif on the ECL.

The letter further stated that thereafter the accused Mian Shehbaz Sharif filed a writ petition with the LHC for removal of his name from the ECL and a subsequent LHC order set aside the memorandum of the Ministry of Interior.

The letter stated that in this regard another request for the placement of Shehbaz Sharif's name on the ECL was forwarded to the NAB HQ in Islamabad.

In response, the prosecutor-general NAB HQ, in a letter, had conveyed that instead of placing the name of the accused on the ECL, it has approved to place, before the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the material collected against the accused to place his name on the ECL.

The letter stated that a reference (ACR No 22/2020) has been filed against Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Mrs Nusrat Shehbaz, Hamza Shehbaz, Suleman Shehbaz, Muhammad Usman, and 11 others and the said reference was filed on August 20, 2020, on the allegations that the suspects had accumulated disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs7,328 million through dishonest means. It said the suspects were also guilty of the offence of money laundering, with the case pending before an accountability court in Lahore.

The letter stated that the names of all persons except Shehbaz Sharif had been placed on the ECL and 11 other accused with Shehbaz Sharif were facing trial.

The letter further stated that five of the accused had been declared proclaimed offenders in the case.

24 Palestinians, including 9 children, martyred in Israeli air strikes

24 Palestinians, including 9 children, martyred in Israeli air strikes
At least 24 Palestinians were martyred, among them nine children, as Israel launched military strikes in Gaza following heightened tensions between the law enforcement agencies in Jerusalem with Palestinian civilians.

On the other hand, Israel claimed it had struck 130 "military targets" in Gaza and had taken out 15 Hamas and Islamic Jihad operatives.

"We have struck 130 military targets belonging mostly to Hamas," the Islamist group that controls the blockaded Gaza strip, Israeli army spokesman Jonathan Conricus told reporters.

"According to our current estimates we have killed 15 Hamas and Islamic Jihad operatives," he said.

Violence has spiralled since the Israeli police attacked unarmed Palestinians praying in the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound, wounding hundreds of Palestinians in the process.

Hamas had given the Israeli forces a 1500 GMT Monday deadline to vacate Al-Aqsa, Islam´s third holiest site.

Shortly after the deadline expired, there were reports of rockets being fired into Israeli territory.

Israeli military spokesperson Conricus said Israel could not yet confirm or deny that its strikes caused civilian casualties in Gaza strip.

He told reporters that sites targeted so far included weapons manufacturing and storage facilities, training sites and military bases in Gaza.

"We are in the early stages of our counter strikes... They will continue."

Tensions in Jerusalem have flared since Israeli riot police attacked Palestinian worshippers on the last Friday of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan in the city's worst disturbances since 2017.

Nightly unrest since then at the Al-Aqsa compound has left hundreds of Palestinians wounded, drawing international calls for de-escalation and sharp rebukes from across the Muslim world.

Pakistan restricts use of AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine for people under 40

Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine
People under 40 years of age cannot use the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, Pakistan's government has announced under its new guidelines for the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.

The restriction for people under 40 years of age is irrespective of gender.

Another change in guidelines is that the interval between doses will be 12 weeks instead of a range of 8-12 weeks mentioned earlier.

These two changes were confirmed by Health Director-General Dr Rana Muhammad Safdar. They have been made on recommendation by an expert committee.

Dr Safdar said the two changes will lead to operational ease. The guidelines, however, will remain interim, he said, as new data from around the world keeps pouring.

International guidelines on the use of coronavirus vaccines are rapidly changing on the basis of new data and research, Dr Safdar said, adding that if a need is felt, guidelines for AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine use would be reviewed again.

“All decisions are evidence-based to optimally ensure the safety and efficacy of all vaccines authorised for use in Pakistan. Additionally, an efficient system is in place for adverse event surveillance in accordance with the global guidelines. It is heartening that all events reported so far are of minor nature and fully recovered,” Dr Safdar said.

Currently, people above 40 years are eligible to get registered for the COVID-19 vaccination through the government's portal.

UAE to bar travel from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka from May 12

UAE to bar travel from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka from May 12
The United Arab Emirates will bar entry for travellers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka starting from May 12 (Wednesday) as part of measures to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the country's National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority said on its website on Monday.

"Flights between the four countries will continue to allow the transport of passengers from the UAE to Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka," it said.

"This decision also includes extending the suspension of entry for travellers who were in these four countries in the 14-day period prior to arrival in the UAE," it added.

The ban includes transit flights coming from those countries. Transit flights to those countries can continue.

"Exempted travelers, including UAE citizens, those on diplomatic missions accredited by the four countries, official delegations, those travelling on business planes, and golden residence holders, will be subject to precautionary measures that include a 10-day quarantine and PCR testing at the airport and on the fourth and eighth days after entering the country."

The country also reduced the PCR testing period from 72 to 48 hours before travel.

Following the announcement, Airblue and Serene Air said they would continue their Eid flights from UAE to Pakistan since the restrictions did not apply to outbound flights.

"We will continue our flights for Pakistan till Eid as per plan, but I am not sure about post-Eid operations from Pakistan to the UAE," Serene Air's country manager in UAE, Sohail Sheikh, told Khaleej Times.

Both the airlines said that passengers could rebook their tickets or ask for a refund, assuring they would be "facilitated as per standard policy without extra cost".

The UAE announced last month a ban on entry from India to guard against the spread of the highly contagious Indian variant of the coronavirus.

A growing number of countries have banned travel from India as the country is ravaged by the Covid-19 pandemic with hundreds of thousands of cases being reported each day. These include the Philippines, Italy, United States, and Australia.

Australia also warned that people who tried to flout the travel ban could face jail and fines.

Other countries, including Canada, United Kingdom and Iran have banned travel from both India and Pakistan.

Over the last 24 hours, India reported 366,161 new infections and 3,754 deaths — off a little from recent peaks — taking India's tally to 22.6 million with 246,116 deaths.

Meanwhile, Pakistan reported 3,447 new cases and 78 deaths, taking the country's tally of infections to 861,473 and the death toll to 18,993.

Shaheen's career-best 'five-for' sees Pakistan to big win over Zimbabwe

Shaheen's career-best 'five-for' sees Pakistan to big win over Zimbabwe
Seamer Shaheen Afridi took a career best five for 52 as Pakistan beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 147 runs early on the fourth day of the second Test at Harare Sports Club on Monday.

It was the fourth successive series win for Pakistan on a southern Africa tour.

Pakistan needed just one wicket at the start of the day and it took a little over 20 minutes for Shaheen to induce an edge from Luke Jongwe (37) to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, wrapping up the contest as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 231 in their second innings.

Pakistan won the first Test by an innings and 116 runs and have now completed a comprehensive series victory, which followed limited overs success in South Africa.

The tourists had elected to bat and posted a massive 510 for eight declared, boosted by a maiden double-ton for opener Abid Ali, who spent almost 11 hours at the crease for his 215.

Seamer Hasan Ali claimed 5-27 in Zimbabwe's reply, skittling the home side for 132, before Nauman Ali (5-86) and Shaheen did the damage with the ball in the follow-on innings, claiming all the wickets to fall.

Only Regis Chakabva (80) and stand-in skipper Brendan Taylor (49) offered much resistance to the Pakistan victory charge, with most of the damage done on the third day when the visitors picked up 15 wickets.

Babar Azam voted ICC Men’s Player of the Month for April 2021

Babar Azam
Pakistan captain Babar Azam on Monday was voted the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Men’s Player of the Month for April 2021, according to the state-run media outlet Associated Press of Pakistan.

The report added that Azam had won the award for his "consistent and outstanding performances across all formats in the recently concluded series against South Africa and was chosen as the April winner by fans and the ICC voting academy".

Azam's match-winning 82-ball 94 in the third ODI against South Africa helped him gain 13 rating points to reach a career-best 865 points. He also contributed 122 from 59 balls in Pakistan’s successful chase in the third match of a T20I series against the same opposition.

“The world bats in two ways in white-ball cricket.

"One way is to destroy attacks with muscle and force and then there is the Babar Azam way, like conducting a batting symphony with punch, panache and flair, and he deserves to win this award," said Ramiz Raja — representing the ICC's voting academy — as he commented on Azam's performance in April.

Azam also became the first Pakistan captain to win his first four opening Tests, according to a statement from the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The ICC on Monday announced the winners of the ICC Player of the Month Awards for April which recognise and celebrate the best performances from both male and female cricketers across all forms of international cricket throughout the year.

Australian female player Alyssa Healy was named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for April 2021.

Earlier in April, Azam had snatched two records away from Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

He had become the fastest cricketer to reach the milestone of 2,000 runs in the Twenty20 international format, having accomplished the feat in just 52 innings.

Azam became the 11th overall player to score 2,000 T20I runs and took Kohli's record, who had previously held it for scoring 2,000 runs in 56 innings.

Also in April, Azam also overtook Kohli to become the No.1 ranked ODI batsman in the world after the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches against South Africa.

Azam had moved ahead of Kohli to the No.1 position after his 103 in the first match of the series. But, he had slipped to second (five points behind Kohli) after scoring 31 in the second match.

However, after an innings of 94 in the series finale that earned him the player of the match award, Azam had once again leapfrogged the India captain who slipped from the top for the first time since replacing AB de Villiers in October 2017, a press release issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had said.

Govt to reinvestigate Hudaibiya Paper Mills case: Fawad

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said Monday the federal government has directed relevant institutions to re-investigate the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case.

"Hudaibiya [mill's] case is the most important source of corruption of the Sharif family. Shahbaz Sharif and Nawaz Sharif are the main suspects in this case," Chaudhry said on Twitter.

The method adopted in laundering money out of the country through the Hudaibiya Paper Mills was later adopted in every case, and it is very important to bring this case to an end, he said.

Chaudhry said today the legal team gave a detailed briefing to Prime Minister Imran Khan on the cases against Shahbaz Sharif.

"The government has decided that the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case needs to be re-investigated."

In response to the development, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said the decision to reopen the Hudaibiya Paper Mills case proves PM Imran Khan has admitted the cases against PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif were "fake".

The spokesperson said the Ashiana, clean water, metros, and assets beyond means cases were based on political revenge.

"The Supreme Court had dismissed the Hudaibiya reference," Aurangzeb said.

The PML-N leader slammed the government's spokesperson saying the Lahore High Court had quashed the reference — and the Superme Court had upheld the judgement.

Moreover, PML-N leader Pervaiz Rasheed said top courts had dismissed the case and the government had accepted defeat — that is why it is reopening the case.

Hudaibiya Paper Mills case

The Hudaibiya Paper Mills was allegedly used as a cover by the Sharif family to launder money outside the country in the 1990s.

It was in relation to this case that the Sharif family's trusted aide, Ishaq Dar, recorded a confessional statement on April 25, 2000, in front of a magistrate in Lahore accepting his role in laundering money.

On the basis of that confession, a reference was filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in 2000 before an accountability court against the Hudabiya Paper Mills, three Sharif brothers, Dar and others.

Dar was not charged as he had become an approver for the prosecution.

That reference was struck down by a referee judge of the LHC on March 11, 2014, in response to a writ petition filed in 2011 stating that Dar's confession was coerced.

Dar had claimed that he had made the 'confession' under duress and disowned the statement.

Death toll from blasts near Afghan girls' school rises to 68

Death toll from blasts near Afghan girls' school rises to 68
The death toll from multiple explosions outside a school in Afghanistan's capital Kabul has risen to 68, Afghan officials said on Sunday, with doctors struggling to provide medical care to 165 injured and officials trying to identify bodies.

Multiple blasts on Saturday evening — the deadliest in more than a year — shook the neighbourhood of Dasht-e-Barchi, home to a large community of Shi'ites from the Hazara ethnic minority — a regular target of militants.

At first, a car bomb was detonated in front of the Sayed Al-Shuhada school on Saturday, and when the students rushed out in panic, two more bombs exploded.

Officials said most of those killed were school girls. Some families were still searching hospitals for their missing children.

The blasts came as the United States military continues to pull out its last 2,500 troops from the violence-wracked country despite faltering peace efforts between the Taliban and Afghan government to end a decades-long war.

Describing Saturday's carnage, Interior Ministry spokesman Tareq Arian told reporters that a car bomb first detonated in front of the Sayed Al Shuhada School, and when the students rushed out in panic, two more devices exploded.

He said more than 100 people were wounded, adding that most of the victims were female students.

Residents were out shopping ahead of this week's Eidul Fitr, which marks the end of Ramazan, the Muslim holy month of fasting.

On Sunday relatives began burying the dead at a hilltop site known as “Martyrs Cemetery”.

No group has so far claimed the attack, but Afghan officials including President Ashraf Ghani blamed the Taliban.

“This savage group does not have the power to confront security forces on the battlefield, and instead targets with brutality and barbarism public facilities and the girls' school,” Ghani said in a statement after the blasts.

The insurgents have denied involvement and insist they have not carried out attacks in Kabul since February last year, when they signed a deal with the United States that paved the way for peace talks and withdrawal of the remaining US troops.

But the group has clashed in near-daily battles with Afghan forces in the rugged countryside even as the US military reduces its presence.

The United States was supposed to have pulled all forces out by May 1 under a deal struck with the Taliban last year, but Washington pushed back the date to September 11 — a move that angered the insurgents.

The top US diplomat in Kabul, Ross Wilson, called Saturday's blasts “abhorrent”.

“This unforgivable attack on children is an assault on Afghanistan's future, which cannot stand,” Wilson said on Twitter.

The Dasht-e-Barchi neighbourhood has been a regular target of attacks from Islamist militants.

In May last year, a group of gunmen attacked a hospital in the area in a brazen daylight raid that left 25 people dead, including 16 mothers of newborn babies.

On October 24, a suicide bomber blew himself up at a tuition centre in the same district, killing 18 people in an attack that also went unclaimed.

Chinese rocket debris lands in Indian Ocean

Chinese rocket debris lands in Indian Ocean
Remnants of China's biggest rocket landed in the Indian Ocean on Sunday, with most of its components destroyed upon re-entry into the atmosphere, ending days of speculation over where the debris would hit but drawing US criticism over lack of transparency.

The coordinates given by Chinese state media, citing the China Manned Space Engineering Office, put the point of impact in the ocean, west of the Maldives archipelago.

Debris from the Long March 5B had some people looking warily skyward since it blasted off from China's Hainan island on April 29, but the China Manned Space Engineering Office said most of the debris was burnt up in the atmosphere.

State media reported parts of the rocket re-entered the atmosphere at 10:24am Beijing time and landed at a location with the coordinates of longitude 72.47 degrees east and latitude 2.65 degrees north.

The US Space command confirmed the re-entry of the rocket over the Arabian Peninsula, but said it was unknown if the debris impacted land or water.

"The exact location of the impact and the span of debris, both of which are unknown at this time, will not be released by US Space Command," it said in a statement on its website.

The Long March was the second deployment of the 5B variant since its maiden flight in May 2020. Last year, pieces from the first Long March 5B fell on Ivory Coast, damaging several buildings. No injuries were reported.

"Spacefaring nations must minimise the risks to people and property on Earth of re-entries of space objects and maximise transparency regarding those operations," Nasa Administrator Bill Nelson, a former senator and astronaut who was picked for the role in March, said in a statement after the re-entry.

"It is clear that China is failing to meet responsible standards regarding their space debris."

With most of the Earth's surface covered by water, the odds of populated area on land being hit had been low, and the likelihood of injuries even lower, according to experts.

But uncertainty over the rocket's orbital decay and China's failure to issue stronger reassurances in the run-up to the re-entry fuelled anxiety.

"It is critical that China and all spacefaring nations and commercial entities act responsibly and transparently in space to ensure the safety, stability, security, and long-term sustainability of outer space activities," Nelson said.

Harvard-based astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell told Reuters that the potential debris zone could have been as far north as New York, Madrid or Beijing, and as far south as southern Chile and Wellington, New Zealand.

Since large chunks of the Nasa space station Skylab fell from orbit in July 1979 and landed in Australia, most countries have sought to avoid such uncontrolled re-entries through their spacecraft design, McDowell said.

"It makes the Chinese rocket designers look lazy that they didn't address this," said McDowell.

The Global Times, a Chinese tabloid, dismissed as "Western hype" concerns the rocket was "out of control" and could cause damage.

"It is common practice across the world for upper stages of rockets to burn up while reentering the atmosphere," Wang Wenbin, a spokesman at China's foreign ministry, said at a regular media briefing on May 7.

"To my knowledge, the upper stage of this rocket has been deactivated, which means most of its parts will burn up upon re-entry, making the likelihood of damage to aviation or ground facilities and activities extremely low," Wang said at the time.

The rocket, which put into orbit an unmanned Tianhe module containing what will become living quarters for three crew on a permanent Chinese space station, will be followed by 10 more missions to complete the station by 2022.

Nauman, Shaheen star as Pakistan close in on Test series win

Nauman, Shaheen star as Pakistan close in on Test series win
Left-arm spinner Nauman Ali bagged a fifer while pacer Shaheen Shah took four as Pakistan was one wicket away from a Test series win over Zimbabwe.

The hosts managed to score 220/9 in the second innings, trailing by 158 runs as Pakistan enforced follow-on. Luke Jongwe (31) and Blessing Muzarabani (0) were the last men standing at stumps on Day 3.

Earlier, Hasan Ali picked yet another fifer as Zimbabwe were all out for 132 in reply to Pakistan’s 510/8. It was Hasan’s best bowling figure in Test cricket as he finished with figures of 5/27.

Hasan started the Day three proceedings by dismissing Tendai Chisoro while he also had the better of Regis Chakabva(33), the most notable run-scorer for the hosts.

Hasan didn’t stop and continued his dominance as he clean bowled debutant Luke Jongwe for a score of 19.

Meanwhile, Donald Tiripano tried to held his nerves and scored a crucial 23, however, he was caught at short-leg off Sajid Khan.

The 26-year-old Hasan completed his fifth five-wicket haul of his Test career after Azhar Ali took a stunner at gully to remove Roy Kaia. Blessing Muzarabani was the last man to depart courtesy of Imran Butt’s run-out.

Off-spinner Sajid finished with figures of 2/39 while Tabish Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi grabbed a wicket each.

Pakistan started the session with Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissing Tarisai Musakanda (8) in the fifth over. Kevin Kasuza was joined by Chakabva and the duo added 50 runs for second wickets.

Kasuza had to go after he was clean bowled by spinner Nauman Ali for 22 off 73 balls. Chakabva and Taylor batted aggressively till Tea as they scored 35 off 31 deliveries.

Zimbabwe fought well for a while, they were 142/2 with Taylor and Chakabva hitting boundaries all around, but after that stand was broken by Shaheen, they just crumbled.

Taylor dismissed after scoring quickfire 49 off 31 balls with the help of 10 fours while Chakabva was removed by Nauman Ali. Chakabva in his 137 ball innings, scored 80 and smashed 13 fours, two sixes.

Nauman and Shaheen respectively were on a brink of claiming a hat-trick, however, Zimbabweans denied it.

Nauman has the figures of 5/86 while Shaheen finished the day with figures of 4/45. Pakistan will now come tomorrow to take the remaining wickets and bag a 2-0 series win.

ECP notifies Qadir Khan Mandokhail's return to National Assembly after NA-249 win

Qadir Khan Mandokhail
PPP's Qadir Khan Mandokhail was notified on Sunday by the Election Commission of Pakistan as having returned to the National Assembly following his victory in the NA-249 by-election in Karachi.

"In pursuance of the provision of sub-section () of Section 98 of the Elections Act, 2017, [...] the Election Commission of Pakistan hereby publishes the name of candidate returned to the National Assembly of Pakistan as a result of by-election held on 29.04.2021 from the under mentioned constituency," read the notification.

Mandokhail emerged the victor for a second time yesterday after a recount of votes polled in the by-election.

After a recount of votes polled across all 276 stations, Mandokhail got 15,656 votes, whereas PML-N candidate Miftah Ismail secured 14,747, meaning a victory margin of 909 votes.

When the unofficial by-poll results were first announced, Mandokhail won with 16,156 votes, whereas Ismail came in second with 15,473, resulting in a difference of 683 votes.

The low margin of votes had prompted Ismail to petition the Election Commission of Pakistan to hold a recount. The ECP, accepting Ismail's application for a hearing, issued a stay order, withholding results of the by-poll.

On May 4, following a hearing, it ordered a recount on May 6, which was boycotted by all parties except for the PPP.

The vote recount hit a snag when candidates objected to unsealed bags that were brought for a recount and came out of the District Returning Officer's office in protest.

The PTI had gone so far as to file a petition with the ECP seeking annulment of the by-election in NA-249 due to alleged rigging.

However, ECP officials decreed that "the recount process will be completed as per the order”.

Provincial Election Commissioner Aijaz Anwer Chohan had on May 6 promised that the recounting of votes will be completed in the next two days.
