Saudi Arabia pledges $8b package to Pakistan: report

Saudi Arabia pledges $8b package to Pakistan
Saudi Arabia has agreed to provide Islamabad a "sizeable package" of around $8 billion to help revive the country’s ailing economy amid the maiden trip of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The package includes doubling of the oil financing facility, additional money either through deposits or Sukuks and rolling over of the existing $4.2 billion facilities.

"However, technical details are being worked out and will take a couple of weeks to get all documents ready and signed. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his official entourage have left Saudi Arabia but Minister for Finance Miftah Ismail is still staying there to finalise the modalities of the increased financial package.

Sharing the salient features of the financial package, the official said that Pakistan had proposed doubling of the oil facility from $1.2 billion to $2.4 billion and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia agreed to it. It was also agreed that the existing deposits of $3 billion would be rolled over for an extended period up to June 2023.

"Pakistan and KSA discussed an additional package of over $2 billion either through deposits or Sukuk and it is likely that even more money will be provided to Islamabad," said official sources, adding that the size of the total package would be determined when additional money was finalised.

Saudi Arabia had provided $3 billion deposits to the State Bank of Pakistan in December 2021 while the Saudi oil facility was operationalised from March 2022 whereby Pakistan was provided $100 million to procure oil. Saudi Arabia had provided a $7.5 billion package during the last tenure of the PMLN government (2013-18). Under the PTI-led regime, Saudi Arabia had provided a package of $4.2 billion, including $3 billion deposits and $1.2 billion oil facility for one year and linked it with the IMF programme.

Now Saudi Arabia has provided an enhanced financial package to Pakistan when its economy is in dire straits and the country is facing a balance of payment crisis. The country’s foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan depleted by $6 billion in the last six to seven weeks and nosedived to $10.5 billion at the moment. With the rising current account deficit at $13.2 billion in the first nine months and pressing external loan repayment requirements, Pakistan requires financial injections of $9 to $12 billion till June 2022 to avert further depletion of foreign currency reserves. Pakistan will have to repay external debt servicing of $3 billion in the last quarter (April-June) of the current fiscal year.

The revival of the IMF programme is considered as imperative because the gross external financing requirement is estimated to the tune of $35 billion during the next fiscal year 2022-23 and without the backing of the programme, the huge financing gap cannot be bridged. However, independent economists, like Dr Ashfaque Hasan Khan, suggest a ban on the import of luxury cars and other unessential items for saving dollars.

Later in a tweet, Miftah Ismail said, "Just said goodbye to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other colleagues at Jeddah Airport, who are on their way to Islamabad after a brief stopover in Abu Dhabi to meet Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Zayed. I remain in SA to meet Saudi officials and start technical-level talks."

Governor rejects Usman Buzdar's resignation

Usman Buzdar
Hours before the oath-taking ceremony of CM-elect Hamza Shahbaz Sharif, Punjab Governor Omar Sarfaraz Cheema on Saturday rejected the resignation of Usman Buzdar.

Omar Sarafraz Cheema, in his letter to Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervaiz Elahi, stated that the March 28 resignation letter of Usman Buzdar was not in accordance with the rules as it was addressed to the prime minister and not to the governor which was mandatory as per sub-section 8 of Article 130 of the Constitution.

“The resignation was not addressed to the governor which was unconstitutional and thus rejected,” Cheema stated.

A day earlier, Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered the National Assembly Speaker to take oath from the newly elected Punjab Chief Minster Hamza Shahbaz Sharif on Saturday.

The LHC judge Justice Jawad Hassan pronounced the reserved verdict Hamza Shahbaz’s plea as he moved the court for the third time in this regard.

It merits mention that Hamza was elected as Punjab’s chief minister on April 16. However, he hasn’t sworn in yet as his oath-taking was deferred twice despite the LHC’s directives for not delaying the matter any further.

'High precision' strike kills journalist, hits Kyiv homes

Kyiv
Mykhailo Vovchynskyi had only just moved into his Kyiv apartment when the building was hit in what Russia called a "high precision" missile attack targeting a factory across the street -- a claim he found loaded with menace.

Not only did the powerful blast on Thursday evening heavily damage the structure, injuring at least 10 people, it killed a female journalist in her home as UN chief Antonio Guterres was visiting the Ukrainian capital.

"If this was indeed a high precision attack, that is pretty cynical. It s inhuman behaviour," 22-year-old Vovchynskyi said Friday after he and his girlfriend hauled out bags of belongings they had brought in some two weeks earlier.

As he spoke, heavy equipment was piling up rubble and crews were shovelling shattered glass and inspecting the building, which had nearly three storeys of its facade shorn off.

The powerful blast left mounds of shattered concrete and on Friday morning, rescuers said they had found a corpse, which was carried out in a black body bag on a stretcher and loaded into a green morgue van.

The victim was Vera Gyrych, a journalist and producer at US-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty who was killed in her home, prompting the broadcaster to express its anger over "the senseless nature" of her death.

"We have lost a dear colleague who will be remembered for her professionalism and dedication to our mission," its president Jamie Fly said in a statement.

Russia has faced harsh criticism for its explosive strikes that have struck civilian areas, but also over accusations its soldiers on the ground have killed or harmed civilians.

Moscow insists it is doing all it can to protect non-combatants.

Russia strikes Kyiv during UN chief's visit, Biden asks for $33bn for Ukraine

Russia
Russian forces bombarded Ukraine s capital late Thursday during a visit by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who decried the "absurdity" of war in the 21st century, as US President Joe Biden asked for $33 billion more to support Kyiv.

At least three people were wounded in the strikes in the western part of the city, which were the first in the capital in nearly two weeks, and came after Guterres toured Bucha and other suburbs where Moscow is alleged to have committed war crimes.

Ukrainian prosecutors said they were investigating 10 Russian soldiers for suspected atrocities in Bucha, where dozens of bodies in civilian clothes were found after Moscow s retreat, and had identified more than 8,000 alleged war crimes cases.

Those cases involve "killing civilians, bombing of civilian infrastructure, torture" and "sexual crimes" reported during Russia s occupation of various parts of Ukraine, prosecutor general Iryna Venediktova told a German TV channel.

In Washington, Biden urged US lawmakers to approve his huge aid package, as well as proposed new laws to allow using luxury assets stripped from Russian oligarchs to compensate Ukraine for damage inflicted since Moscow invaded on February 24.

"The cost of this fight is not cheap. But caving to aggression is going to be more costly if we allow it to happen," Biden said.

When the time came to play the last ball Imran Khan ran away from the ground : Maryam Nawaz

Maryam Nawaz Sharif taunts Imran Khan
Continuing her attack against Imran Khan, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz said that the courts of the country had to be opened at 12am in the night because the former prime minister had launched a “suicide attack” on the Constitution.

Addressing party workers in Lahore, Maryam told the PTI chairman that her father, PML-N supremo, Nawaz Sharif would end his politics.

“His (Imran Khan) name should be [changed to] king of liars as he has never spoken the truth,” said Maryam. She added that the former prime minister was "crying" ever since he lost power.

“When the time came to play the last ball he ran away from the ground. When the time came for the last over he did not leave the pavilion,” Maryam told her party workers.

The PML-N leader said that the former prime minister with an “innocent face” questions why the courts were opened at 12 in the night.

“The courts were opened at 12 because you launched a suicide attack on the Constitution,” said the PML-N leader. She also added that the PTI chairman felt that if he “would trample the court orders”, the court would “keep looking” at its face.

She alleged that the PTI lawmakers acted like “thugs” in the National and Punjab Assembly.

“Do they act like this with their parents as well?” asked Maryam. She claimed that President Arif Alvi, Governor Punjab Omar Sarfaraz Cheemz, former speaker Asad Qaiser and ex-deputy speaker Qasim Suri were acting like the PTI chairman’s “employees”.

“Your employees committed treason against the Constitution,” claimed the PML-N leader. She added that her cousin Hamza Shehbaz would take oath as the chief minister of Punjab.

“When you failed you came up with a fake letter,” Maryam said while berating Imran Khan. She added that Imran Khan got a “befitting reply” form the state and the National Security Committee on the letter.

“If institutions are standing with the Constitution then it is a good thing. Why is Imran Khan crying?” asked Maryam. She claimed that the PTI chairman was “crying” because he has a habit of passing exams by cheating.

Earlier Punjab Chief Minister-elect Hamza Shehbaz accused the PTI chairman of making false promises and assured the PML-N workers that Imran Khan would not be allowed to hide behind “fake tears”.

“Maryam Nawaz, Hanif Abbasi, Rana Iqbal and I were sent to prison. They could not prove an ounce of corruption in four years,” said Hamza. He added that the PTI chairman will not be given an opportunity to run away.

Tesla loses $126 billion due to Musk's Twitter deal

Elon's Tesla loses billions of dollars
Tesla lost $126 billion in value on Tuesday amid investor concerns that Chief Executive Elon Musk may have to sell shares to fund his $21 billion equity contribution to his $44 billion buyout of Twitter.

Tesla is not involved in the Twitter deal, yet its shares have been targeted by speculators after Musk declined to disclose publicly where his cash for the acquisition is coming from. The 12.2% drop in Tesla's shares on Tuesday equated to a $21 billion drop in the value of his Tesla stake, the same as the $21 billion in cash he committed to the Twitter deal.

Wedbush Securities analyst Daniel Ives said that worries about upcoming stock sales by Musk and the possibility that he is becoming distracted by Twitter weighed on Tesla shares. "This (is) causing a bear festival on the name," he said.

Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

To be sure, Tesla's share plunge came against a challenging backdrop for many technology-related stocks. The Nasdaq closed at its lowest level since December 2020 on Tuesday, as investors worried about slowing global growth and more aggressive rate hikes from the U.S. Federal Reserve.
Twitter's shares also slid on Tuesday, falling 3.9% to close at $49.68 even though Musk agreed to buy it on Monday for $54.20 per share in cash.

The widening spread reflects investor concern that the precipitous decline in Tesla's shares, from which Musk derives the majority of his $239 billion fortune, could lead the world's richest person to have second thoughts about the Twitter deal.

"If Tesla's share price continues to remain in freefall, that will jeopardize his financing," said OANDA senior market analyst Ed Moya.

As part of the Tesla deal, Musk also took out a $12.5 billion margin loan tied to his Tesla stock. He had already borrowed against about half of his Tesla shares.

University of Maryland professor David Kirsch, whose research focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship, said investors started to worry about a "cascade of margin calls" on Musk's loans.

Fluctuation in follower count are organic : Twitter

Fluctuation in twitter followers after Musk's takeover
Twitter has confirmed that the fluctuation in follower count followed by being sold to Elon Musk was organic in nature, Tech Crunch reported.

Twitter said that these changes were not being caused by any bots or any other action by the microblogging platform. The fluctuation was due to people creating and deactivating accounts.

"We’ve been looking into recent fluctuations in follower counts,” Twitter said in a statement.

“While we continue to take action on accounts that violate our spam policy, which can affect follower counts, these fluctuations appear to largely be a result of an increase in new account creation and deactivation. We’ll continue looking into these follower count fluctuations.”
Many high-profile cases have come forward, with some celebrities showing a drop in followers. Former US President Barack Obama lost more than 300,000 followers in the process. Popular musician Katy Perry reported losing over 200,000 followers after the announcement.

Before the announcement, many users had said that they would quit the social media platform if Twitter accepted Musk's offer. People feared Musk's approach to freedom of speech.

However, after the deal, "#RIPTwitter" began trending on the microblogging website.

Right-wing politicians, on the contrary, saw a rise in followers. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's follower count, for example, increased from 539,000 to 660,000, Rep. Matt Gaetz noted.

Twitter has said that it will keep an eye on the matter even though the fluctuation is organic.

Lahore High Court directs governer Punjab to administer the oath to CM-elect Hamza Shahbaz

Lahore High Court
Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti directed Punjab Governor Omar Sarfaraz Cheema to administer the oath to CM-elect Hamza Shahbaz himself or appoint a representative for the constitutional duty by tomorrow.

The directive comes as the LHC announced the verdict on chief minister-elect Hamza Shehbaz's petition seeking a direction to the Senate chairman to administer the oath to him.

Hamza was elected as Punjab's chief minister on April 16. However, he hasn't sworn in yet as his oath-taking was deferred twice despite the LHC's directives for not delaying the matter any further.

The LHC reserved the verdict on Hamza's plea on Tuesday, which is the second time PML-N has reached out to the high court for the resolution of the matter.

During the hearing, Punjab Advocate-General Ahmad Owais maintained that the Punjab Governor Omer Sarfaraz Cheema had sent a six-page letter to President Arif Alvi and expressed serious concern over the election of the chief minister, besides seeking his advice. He stated that the president had sent the recommendations of the governor to the prime minister.

The AGP also raised objections to the maintainability of the petition, saying that the president's argument had not been heard.

The argument got LHC Chief Justice Ameer Bhatti's ire who questioned what law had given the mandate to the governor to examine the validity of the chief minister’s election.

The judge remarked that the prime minister’s advice was not required in the matter, as the election was held in compliance with a judicial order.

At this, the AGP maintained that the issue of election needed to be dealt with restraint, as the election was held amid ruckus. However, the chief justice noted that the court had shown enough restraint, questioning what action had been taken on the order to appoint another representative to administer the oath to the CM-elect.

The AGP maintained that the court order was received by President Alvi three days ago. "President would look into the matter now," he added.

The chief justice observed that there was no chief executive for the past so many days in the province while expressing dismay over the inaction by the president on the high court order.

"The president, instead of implementing the judicial order, was giving explanations.

"The court had enlightened the president that he was the head of the state but he might be naive. The court had also made him understand the matter through its order but to no avail," Justice Bhatti remarked.

Meanwhile, a federal law officer informed the court that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had sent the advice to the president, asking for the court’s order to be complied with in letter and spirit.

Advocate Ashtar Ausaf on behalf of Hamza Shehbaz argued that the court orders were not being implemented. He pleaded with the court to issue directions for the implementation of its orders.

Hamza Shehbaz through the petition submitted that the LHC had expressed the hope that the president would appoint another person to administer the oath of the chief minister’s office to him while forwarding its orders to the office of the president for the purpose.

"The X-ray revealed a fracture in his finger. Usually it takes around four weeks to recover so he is definitely ruled out of the first Test and is also uncertain for the second Test against Sri Lanka," said Manzur.

The first Test is in Chittagong from May 15 to 19. The second Test will be held in Dhaka from May 23 to 27.

Fears of Ukraine war expanding after Moldova blasts

Ukraine Russia conflict
Concerns that the Ukraine war could escalate into a wider conflict grew on Tuesday as Kyiv accused Moscow of trying to create unrest in a Russian-backed separatist region of Moldova.

The United Nations and United States warned of rising tensions in the Transnistria region of Moldova, as UN chief Antonio Guterres met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow and pleaded for peace.

Read more: US sends artillery to Ukraine against Russian forces

Russian forces have been in Transnistria for decades after the predominantly Russian-speaking region seceded from the former Soviet republic.

Blasts this week targeting the state security ministry, a radio tower and military unit came after a Russian commander claimed Russian speakers in Moldova were being oppressed.

The claim triggered alarm that Moldova could be Russia s next target as Moscow used the same "false flag" argument after launching its bloody invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

"Russia wants to destabilise the Transnistrian region," Mykhaylo Podolyak, a Ukraine presidential aide wrote on Twitter.

"If Ukraine falls, tomorrow Russian troops will be at Chisinau s gates," he said, referring to Moldova s capital.

Guterres "is following with concern reports of new security incidents in the Transnistrian region of Moldova," a UN spokesman said.

The United States echoed similar concerns, stopping short of backing Kyiv s contention that Russia was responsible.

He expressed grave concern on the first case of poliovirus in 2022, after 15 months, which was recently confirmed in a child in North Waziristan.

He noted that a special emergency response plan for South Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province was already under implementation to scale up and improve the quality of the polio eradication programme and increase security of frontline health workers.

Elon Musk: tech visionary turns social media king

Elon Musk
Sometimes it feels like it’s Elon Musk’s world and we just live in it. The endlessly innovative, endlessly eccentric billionaire has struck a deal to buy Twitter -- giving him control of the social media network on which the world debates, mobilizes and bickers.

It is just the latest conquest for Musk, who has revolutionized the car industry, sent his own rocket to space, built the world’s biggest fortune -- and created fountains of moral outrage and celebrity gossip along the way.

Musk, 50, last year became the world’s richest person -- taking the title from Amazon’s Jeff Bezos -- following the meteoric rise of Tesla, his electric automaker founded in 2003.

His takeover of Twitter caps a rollercoaster of announcements and counter-announcements -- which he characteristically punctuated by gleefully firing jabs at the company on its own platform.

And Musk’s new guise as a social media overlord will fuel controversy over his political views, business methods and outsized personality.

He is libertarian, anti-woke, impulsive and promotes himself as a champion of free speech. Some would call him right-wing, while his critics accuse him of being autocratic and bullying.

All this has come in a month in which Musk also made headlines with Tesla opening a "gigafactory" in Texas, after the company left California following a dispute over his efforts to defy a state shutdown of his plant to stop the spread of Covid-19.

And there’s more -- his space transport firm SpaceX is currently breaking yet another boundary as a partner in a three-way venture that sent the first fully private mission to the International Space Station.

But Musk also makes news of a less flattering kind: Tesla has faced a series of lawsuits alleging discrimination and harassment against Black workers as well as sexual harassment.

In parallel with the whiplash-inducing stream of business news, Musk’s penchant for living by his own rules in the private sphere also keeps the world wide-eyed.

It recently emerged Musk has had a second child with his on-again off-again partner, the musician Grimes: a girl they named Exa Dark Siderael Musk -- although the parents will mostly call her Y.

He is even expected to make an appearance -- in person or not -- at the ongoing celebrity defamation trial pitting Johnny Depp against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who formerly dated Musk.

Asian markets mixed but China, Fed keep confidence in check

Bussiness
Asian markets were mixed Tuesday as investors scrabbled to recover from the previous day’s rout but fears over the impact of China’s Covid-induced lockdowns and the Federal Reserve’s plan to hike interest rates quickly continue to drag on sentiment.

The Omicron flare-up across China has led authorities to impose strict containment measures in its biggest cities, shutting off millions of people and threatening to deal a hammer blow to the world’s number two economy.

Read more: Ogra dismisses reports of fuel shortage in country

While Shanghai -- the largest city -- has been in lockdown for weeks, Beijing has launched mass testing for nearly all its 21 million residents with many in the capital now fearing the same fate as the financial hub.

The measures have dealt a severe blow to the economy, leading to concerns about the likely knock-on effects for the rest of the world owing to its reliance on goods from China.

The China crisis comes as traders grapple with a hawkish Fed, which is struggling to control inflation, which is sitting at a more than 40-year high.

"For the time being, the spectre of more severe restrictions in China is not being traded from the inflationary side, but rather as a detriment to the global recovery and as a demand-negative shock," said BMO Capital Markets strategists Benjamin Jeffery and Ian Lyngen.

They added that they were "less convinced that the situation will be enough to materially shift" the Fed’s plans to aggressively hike interest rates to tame runaway inflation.

US central bank policymakers have said they are keen to lift rates several times this year to get a grip on prices, with boss Jerome Powell indicating a half-point rise next month followed by more before January.

The Fed and China issues are being compounded by the war in Ukraine and all the uncertainty that has brought, while investors are nervously awaiting results and forecasts from the world’s biggest companies, hoping for an idea about the impact on their bottom lines.

While Asia suffered a torrid day Monday, Wall Street managed to end on a positive note, helped by news of Elon Musk’s $44 billion purchase of Twitter.

Russia warns of WWIII after top US officials visit Kyiv

Russia Ukraine conflict
Russia on Monday warned the Ukraine conflict risked escalating into a third world war and accused Kyiv of playing at peace talks a day after visiting US officials said Ukrainian forces could beat back Moscow s invasion.

The conflict has triggered an outburst of support from Western nations that has seen weapons pour into Ukraine to help them wage war against Russian troops.

Speaking to Russian news agencies, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticised Kyiv s approach to floundering peace talks, saying the risk of a World War III "is serious".

"It is real, you can t underestimate it."

While he said talks with Kyiv would continue, Lavrov accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of "pretending" to negotiate, adding: "You ll find a thousand contradictions."

For months, Zelensky has been asking Ukraine s western allies for heavy weapons -- including artillery and fighter jets -- vowing his forces could turn the tide of the war with more firepower.

The calls appear to be resonating now, with a host of NATO countries pledging to provide a range of heavy weapons and equipment, despite protests from Moscow.

"The first step in winning is believing that you can win," Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin told a group of journalists after he and Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Zelensky in Kyiv.

"We believe that we can win -- they can win -- if they have the right equipment, the right support."

The highly sensitive US trip by two of President Joe Biden s top cabinet members came as fighting continued across Ukraine, casting a long shadow over Easter celebrations in the largely Orthodox country.

Taliban banned TikTok and PUBG

Tiktok and Pubg banned by Taliban
The Taliban ordered a ban against video-sharing app TikTok and the survival-shooter PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) game on Thursday, insisting they were leading Afghanistan's youth astray.

The phone apps are popular among Afghans, who have been left with few outlets for entertainment since the group returned to power last year and banned music, movies, and television soaps.

The apps "made the young generation go astray", the cabinet said in a statement, adding the telecommunications ministry had been ordered to shut them down.

It also directed the ministry to stop TV channels from showing "immoral material", although little is being broadcast beyond news and religious content.

Despite promising a softer version of the rule that characterised their first stint in power from 1996 to 2001, the Taliban have slowly introduced suffocating restrictions on social life — particularly for women.

Most secondary schools for girls remain shuttered, and women are barred from many government jobs and travelling abroad — or even between cities — unless accompanied by an adult male relative.

The previous government of now-ousted president Ashraf Ghani had tried to ban PUBG — a battle royale first-person shooter game that is reminiscent of the book and film series "The Hunger Games".

Just over 9 million people have access to the internet across Afghanistan, a country of around 38 million people, according to figures published in January from DataReportal, an independent data collector.

There are around 4 million social media users, with Facebook being the most popular.

Chinese-owned TikTok has been shut down twice before in neighbouring Pakistan because of alleged "indecent" content.

During their previous regime, the Taliban's feared religious police banned recreational activities such as kite flying and pigeon racing.

The police representative, on the court orders, replied that they have not received the copy of the petition.

The lawyer of the petitioner replied to the police official’s stance and stated that they have attached the complete copy of application to the police.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had filed a petition against the violence that took place in the Punjab Assembly.

Earlier, Speaker of Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had approached the sessions court over the matter of police not filing a case on the speaker’s appeal.

The PML-Q leader had earlier filed an appeal in the Sessions Court against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMl-N) Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) and 200 unidentified people.

The appeal further states that the victim filed a complaint in the concerned police station but the police did not take any action.

It merits mention here that before the filing of the petition the Speaker Punjab Assembly submitted a request in police station to lodge FIR on the incident of violence in the House. He also termed the election of Hamza Shehbaz as fake and said that election of Chief Minister was not in accordance with the constitution.

Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi reached Qila Gujar Singh police station to register the case.

He was accompanied by a large number of members of the Assembly. He also applied for registration of the case in the Punjab Assembly.

Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, who was injured in the commotion in the assembly after the election of Hamza Shehbaz as the Chief Minister of Punjab, said that all gathered at the behest of Rana Mashhood.

My arm was broken, I regained consciousness after half an hour, he added.

The PLM-Q leader said they were ordered to kill me, the Chief Secretary, Commissioner, DC were monitoring the whole process themselves.

Ilhan Omar to raise Kashmir issue in US Congress

After meeting victims of Indian ceasefire violations and seeing them suffer, US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar said that raising the Kashmir issue in Congress has become more necessary than before.

She said after meeting the people in person and seeing them suffer, it became crucial to raise the issue in Congress on an urgent basis rather than listening to it from others.

Robotaxi startup Pony.ai gains taxi license in China city

Technology
Self-driving tech company Pony.ai, backed by Toyota Motor Corp(7203.T), said on Sunday it has obtained a taxi license in China, which will allow some of its driverless vehicles to start charging fares.

The company said it was the first autonomous driving company in the country to do so. The startup said it was awarded the license to operate 100 driverless vehicles in the Guangzhou city district of Nansha.

Pony.ai last year also won approval to launch paid driverless robotaxi services in Beijing and has since begun offering rides.

In Beijing, however, rides are being offered in a much smaller, industrial zone on a trial basis, a Pony.ai spokesperson said.

According to the company’s statement, in Nansha it will start charging fares in the entire 800 square km of the district with driverless cars. Passengers can hail and pay for rides with Pony.ai’s own app.

Pony.ai will initially deploy those cars with safety drivers but expects to remove them "over the short to intermediate time frame," it said.

The announcement comes at a time when a host of startups are pouring billions of dollars into autonomous technology, aiming to take an early lead in the future of mobility.

Pony.ai has been active in the United States and China, testing its driverless technology on public roads in California’s Fremont and Milpitas, as well as the Chinese cities of Guangzhou and Beijing.

In China, a host of local startups are competing. In recent months, Momenta and automaker SAIC (600104.SS) gained official approval for a trial for their robotaxi service in Shanghai’s Jiading district, a move that followed a similar move in Guangzhou by Nissan-baked Weride(7201.T) .

In Shenzhen, Alibaba-backed AutoX (9988.HK) is also testing robotaxis — observed by safety drivers — in a highly congested urban area with lots of pedestrian and moped traffic.

Graeme Smith cleared of racism allegations: Cricket South Africa

Cricket
Former South Africa director of cricket Graeme Smith has been cleared of racism allegations by two independent arbitrators, the country s cricket board (CSA) said on Sunday.

Smith and current head coach Mark Boucher were among a number of CSA employees implicated in "tentative findings" made by the Social Justice and Nation Building Ombudsman last year into alleged discrimination within the sport s national governing organisation in the past.

Read more: Australia appoints Andrew McDonald as cricket coach

Boucher has been accused of racism by former team mate Paul Adams and of sidelining his former assistant coach Enoch Nkwe. He denies both allegations and will face a CSA disciplinary hearing on charges of gross misconduct next month.

The panel concluded that there was no evidence that Smith, also a former captain of the national side, racially discriminated against former player Thami Tsolekile between 2012 and 2014, or that he was biased against Black leadership at CSA.

It added that there was no merit in the allegation that Smith favoured Boucher over Nkwe during the selection process for head coach in 2019.

"The manner in which these issues have been dealt with... confirms CSA s commitment to deal with the SJN issues in a manner that treats them with utmost seriousness but also ensures fairness, due process and finality," said Lawson Naidoo, chair of the CSA board.

"Now that finality on these processes has been reached, it is appropriate to recognise the extraordinary contribution that Graeme has made to South African cricket."

The 41-year-old Smith s tenure as director of cricket ended at the end of last month.

Japan intensifies search for missing tour boat with 26 on board

Japan intensifies search for missing tour boat with 26 on board
Rescuers in Japan were searching on Saturday for a sightseeing boat carrying 26 people, hours after it sent a distress signal warning it was sinking, the country’s transport minister said.

The “Kazu 1” was sailing off the northern tip of Japan’s Hokkaido prefecture when it issued the signal, Transport Minister Tetsuo Saito told reporters in a late-night press conference.

The crew reported “that the bow of the vessel was flooded just off the coast of Shiretoko Peninsula and that the vessel was sinking...asking for rescue assistance,” he said. “There were two crew members and 24 passengers on board, all of whom were wearing lifejackets,” Saito added.

The call came in at around 1:13 pm local time and rescuers arrived in the area in boats and aircraft around three hours later.

“But we received reports that they haven’t found the vessel or its crew and passengers,” Saito said at around 11:00pm.

Earlier, the coastguard said that rescuers had “set up a task force to tackle the incident” and look for those on the boat, which local media reported included two children.

The boat had been sailing in the icy waters off the Shiretoko Peninsula, a world heritage site designated by Unesco in 2005. It is well-known for its unique wildlife, including the endangered Steller sea lion, as well as migratory birds and brown bears.

Located on the far northeastern tip of Hokkaido, temperatures there currently hover around zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) at night.

Local media reported the daytime water temperature in the area was around two-three degrees Celsius, and that some local fishing boats had returned to port early because of high waves and strong wind.

Sightseeing boat trips in the area are popular for visitors hoping to spot whales, birds and other wildlife, as well as drift ice in the winter.

Japan’s borders remain closed to tourists because of Covid rules, so sightseeing in the country is effectively limited to residents and Japanese citizens.

Japan’s coastguard has been involved in a variety of search and rescue missions around the archipelago, including the successful discovery last November of a 69-year-old man who spent 22 hours drifting in open water off southwestern Kagoshima.

In September 2020, a cargo ship with 43 crew onboard sunk after being caught in a typhoon off Japan’s southwest coast.

Two survivors were rescued, while a third crew member was found unresponsive and declared dead. The search operation was called off a week later.

Gunman takes own life after wounding four near elite Washington school

Gunman takes own life after wounding four near elite Washington school
A gunman opened fire on random victims from a sniper’s nest in an apartment building near an elite prep school in the nation’s capital on Friday, wounding four people, before taking his own life as police closed in, officials said.

Police said the suspect, Raymond Spencer, 23, of suburban Fairfax, Virginia, was initially identified from video he had posted on social media that appeared to show gunshots fired from the vantage point of an upper-floor window, with the misspelled label: “Shool shooting!”

Washington Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee told a late-night news conference the video “looks very much to be authentic,” but it remained uncertain whether the footage was streamed live or had been posted after it was recorded.

Police had issued a bulletin with photographs of Spencer hours earlier saying they were seeking him as a “person of interest” in their investigation.

The shooting and manhunt paralysed the upscale Van Ness neighbourhood of northwest Washington next to the Edmund Burke School, a private college preparatory academy, just as classes were about to be dismissed for the day.

The school and other properties in the vicinity were placed under a security lockdown, with frightened students texting anxious parents as police mounted a door-to-door search for the suspect.

With help from eyewitness reports, police managed to pinpoint the gunman’s position to the fifth floor of a “particular apartment building” and ultimately “breached the location where the suspect took his own life,” Contee said.

Police seized more than half a dozen firearms, including several rifles, and large amounts of ammunition in the apartment, which had been arranged in a “sniper-type setup” with a tripod weapons mount, the chief said.

“His intent was to kill and hurt members of our community,” but investigators had yet to determine a motive, Contee said, adding that the gunman acted alone. The four victims were shot at random as “they were going about their business ... on the streets of the District of Columbia,” he told reporters.

Three people struck by gunfire were taken to area hospitals — a 54-year-old man and a woman in her mid-30s with severe wounds, and a 12-year-old girl wounded in the arm, Assistant Police Chief Stuart Emerman said during an earlier briefing.

A fourth victim, a woman in her mid-60s, was treated on the scene for a slight graze wound, Emerman said. Eyewitnesses said and local media outlets they heard multiple bursts of rapid gunfire. Contee said at least 20 shots were fired.

The late-afternoon violence unfolded along a busy Connecticut Avenue corridor that is also home to several foreign embassies, the Howard University School of Law and a campus of the University of the District of Columbia.

Deaven Rector, 22, a law student, said he heard three bursts of gunfire that seemed to emanate from the AVA Van Ness apartment building where he lives, and which was evacuated.

“Right now, the police have secured the area, and it’s safe, but the fact that this type of chaos can be caused by a maniac on a regular Friday... The kids were about to get out of school,” he said.

Jennifer DiGiacinto said she learned of the shooting from a text message from her son, a Burke School 11th grader.

“He said, ‘There’s something bad happening, I need you to turn on the news.’ I said, ‘Why, what’s happening?’ And he said, ‘Gunfire, I’m under a desk, we’re barricaded in.’ Local news footage showed Connecticut Avenue blockaded by emergency vehicles. Dozens of police vehicles with flashing lights were parked outside the school building, as police in full tactical gear and some in camouflage assembled nearby.

Local NBC affiliate WRC-TV showed evacuees from a building running down a sidewalk, some with their hands raised.

Lamenting the trauma of gun violence that has become commonplace in the United States, Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser told reporters, “Unfortunately, I had to look in parents’ eyes tonight who were terrified. And they were terrified thinking of what might happen to their children.”

Loyalists turn on Sri Lankan PM as protest pressure grows

Loyalists turn on Sri Lankan PM as protest pressure grows
Sri Lanka’s beleaguered prime minister came under increased pressure to step down on Saturday, as a cabinet minister and other senior party members backed street protests calling for resignations over a worsening economic crisis.

Media minister Nalaka Godahewa announced his support for the thousands outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s office who are demanding he and other members of his powerful family quit power.

Sri Lanka is suffering its most painful economic downturn since independence in 1948, with months of lengthy blackouts and acute shortages of food, fuel and other essentials. The crisis has sparked countrywide protests, with angry demonstrators camped outside Rajapaksa’s office for more than three weeks.

Under pressure, the president dropped two of his brothers — Chamal and Basil — and nephew Namal from the cabinet this month, but protesters rejected the changes as cosmetic.

Godahewa, previously a staunch Rajapaksa loyalist, said the president should sack his elder brother, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa — the head of the family — and allow an all-party interim government to take over.

He said the government had lost its credibility after the police killing of a protester on Tuesday. Godahewa said he had offered his resignation but President Rajapaksa had not accepted it. “We need to restore political stability to successfully meet the economic crisis,” Godahewa said in a statement on his Facebook page.

“The entire cabinet, including the prime minister, should resign and [there should be] an interim cabinet that can win the confidence of all.”

Police and the military stepped up security in the central town of Rambukkana on Saturday, ahead of the funeral of 42-year-old Chaminda Lakshan, who was shot dead when police broke up a protest against spiralling fuel prices.

Names of PM Shehbaz, Nawaz removed from no-fly list: sources

Names of PM Shehbaz, Nawaz removed from no-fly list
The newly elected government has removed the names of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister-elect Hamza Shahbaz, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz from the Exit Control List (ECL) under a new policy.

On April 22, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had announced the newly elected government had brought about changes in the rules for having an individual's name on the ECL, and through it, several thousands of people will have their names removed from the list.

Sources in the government say that the names of former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Ahsan Iqbal have also been removed from the ECL.

As per the sources, the process of removing names from the ECL under the new policy will continue for the next few days.

Earlier, the new federal cabinet, in its maiden session on Wednesday, had granted approval to remove Finance Minister Miftah Ismail’s name from the no-fly list.

Addressing a press conference, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Friday had said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had formed a committee to update the rules of including a person's name in the ECL.

"Therefore, with a quick pace, federal minister Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Asad Mehmood, Naveed Qamar, and Azam Nazeer Tarrar put forth their suggestions and the cabinet has approved it," Sanaullah had said.

The interior minister had said if a person's name has been on the exit list for more than 120 days, it would be automatically removed. "...a total of 4,863 are in the list, and with this intervention, around 3,000 people's names have been removed."

He had said the government could extend the duration of the cap by 90 days if it believes there is evidence against a person.

"The government will have to present the said evidence before the ECL committee, and once they approve it, the duration will be moved forward".

Sanaullah had said the following people would not be exempted:

Individuals involved in terrorism

People considered a threat to national security
If their names have been added to ECL by any court
People involved in large-scale public cheating.

Moving on, the interior minister had said 30,000 people were placed on the black list and the Provisional National Identification List (PNIL). He added that since the number of people on the lists is huge, there will be changes to them as well in the next few weeks.

Sanaullah had said that since 60-65% of the people have been removed from the ECL, a similar move would be made in regards to the other lists as well.
