Rehman Malik asks PM to form committee to probe RTS failure

Rehman Malik asks PM to form committee to probe RTS failure
Senator and former interior minister Rehman Malik has requested Prime Minister Imran Khan to constitute a technical committee to probe shutdown of election results software on the polling day.

In a letter addressed to the PM, Malik mentioned that the Senate had entrusted the Standing Committee on Interior with looking after the elections proceedings, and as the country’s interior minister Imran Khan is obliged to assist the committee in its probe.

The committee had asked the Election Commission of Pakistan to investigate the failure of the Results Transmission System (RTS), identify those responsible and suggest action against them, the Pakistan Peoples Party leader wrote.

Malik further wrote that it is in the national interest to probe the RTS collapse and asked for directives to be issued to the Cabinet division at the earliest to form a technical committee to probe the matter.

Earlier this week, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) held NADRA responsible for the RTS shutdown on July 25, according to sources. The party had reportedly formed an investigative committee headed by PTI Parliamentary leader in the Senate, Azam Swati, to look into the RTS collapse.

The ECP, which introduced the software for the July 25 election, faced severe criticism after results were unusually delayed on election day.

Opposition parties have since called the election rigged and urged for a probe into the RTS fault.

Irfan bowls T20 cricket’s most economical spell

Irfan bowls T20 cricket’s most economical spell
Pakistan pacer Mohammad Irfan bowled the most economical four-over spell in the history of T20 cricket while playing for Barbados Tridents in the Caribbean Premier League 2018.

The towering 36-year-old took two wickets and conceded just one run from his four overs against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in Bridgetown on Saturday. His record-breaking spell, however, was not enough as Tridents lost the match by six wickets.

Irfan bowled 23 dot balls before leaking a single off his 24th and final delivery, finishing with figures of 4-3-1-2. His victims included the swashbuckling hitters Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis.

His economy rate of 0.25 beat the previous four-over best of 0.5 bowled by Chris Morris for the Cape Cobras in South Africa’s Ram Slam in November 2014, and by Chanaka Welegedara for Tamil Union in Sri Lanka in April 2015.

Afghan President Ghani rejects resignations of top security officials

Afghan President Ghani rejects resignations of top security officials
Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani rejected on Sunday resignations tendered a day earlier by three senior security officials, the government said.

The resignations from Defence Minister Tariq Shah Bahrami and Interior Minister Wais Barmak, as well as Masoom Stanekzai, the head of the National Directorate of Security, were submitted on Saturday hours after National Security Adviser Hanif Atmar quit.

Government spokesman Haroon Chakansuri said in a statement Ghani had asked the three officials to continue with their duties and “work towards the betterment of the security situation”.

Two senior interior ministry officials said the security officials had cited policy differences with the government amid deteriorating security as the main reason for resigning.

However, Ghani rejected the resignations and instead instructed them to find ways to prevent fresh attacks by militant groups.

Heavy fighting between Taliban insurgents, as well as other militant groups, and security forces has raged across Afghanistan this year. There have also been suicide attacks in Kabul and other major cities.

Authorities have been bracing for more attacks with parliamentary elections due on October 20. The scale of the violence has shocked government officials, who are facing bitter criticism over their handling of the war.

Dr Jogezai refutes claims of excusing himself from Balochistan governorship

Dr Jogezai refutes claims of excusing himself from Balochistan governorship
Dr Ameer Mohammad Khan Jogezai on Sunday night refuted claims that he had excused himself from taking up the post of the governor of Balochistan, he said.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) nominee for the post of Balochistan governorship told that his comments had been "portrayed in an incorrect manner".

"I did not excuse myself from the nomination of Balochistan Governor post," Dr Jogezai explained, adding: "I'd said I won't take the oath as the governor until I'm given the required clearance."

Noting that the government offices will reopen in the coming week after the Eid-ul-Azha holidays, the governor of Balochistan nominee said he would "take oath after the NAB [National Accountability Bureau] issues the certificate next week".

"I do not have any FIR [first information report] or cases against me at present," Dr Jogezai commented, adding that he was "grateful to the prime minister for nominating me for the governorship".

Earlier, a video clip — that surfaced on social media — suggested that Dr Jogezai had excused himself from the nomination. In the video clip, he had expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Imran Khan — the PTI chief — and the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) for placing their trust in him.

"I'm very grateful to Khan sahab, my friends in Balochistan, and the BAP," he had said.

The nominee had further explained that multiple members of his family have held top provincial governmental posts, such as ministerships, governorships, and ambassadorships, in the past.

"… They have been an ambassador; my nephew, Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan has been a federal minister … [considering this], I come from an important background," he explained.

Dr Jogezai had said he came to the decision "for my honour and that of my family, my friends, and especially, Imran Khan".

"For me, this post does not hold that much importance but God forbid, someone's honour gets tainted because of me."

He had further noted that there were "no NAB references against me, there is no ongoing inquiry, and there has been no FIR."

"That case is from 2005 so take it up with them. Till then, I'm sitting here, comfortable and relaxed."

Ismail, Sarwar as Govs Sindh, Punjab

He, however, had mentioned that he did not wish to become a cause of problems for anyone else, which is why he had reportedly excused himself from the nomination.

On Saturday, the Khan-led government had nominated Dr Jogezai as the governor of Balochistan, as per a notification issued by the party. It also said the decision to choose him was made by the premier.

The PM, on the other hand, had also officially nominated Imran Ismail and Chaudhry Sarwar as the governors of Sindh and Punjab, respectively, the former of whom will take the oath of office on August 27.

Khan, however, had not yet taken any final decision with regard to the new Punjab governor.

Nevertheless, sources within the PTI said Shah Farman, a party representative, was being considered for the position of governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

NAB's 'Kidney Centre' probe

Consequent to the announcement, the NAB, Pakistan's anti-corruption body, had disclosed that its investigations pertaining to the financial embezzlement cases against Dr Jogezai were in the final phase and that the relevant references were expected to be filed against him soon.

The anti-graft watchdog's executive board, chaired by Qamar Zaman, had approved an inquiry against the Balochistan Governor nominee in 2015.

According to the NAB, Dr Jogezai has been accused of embezzlement of funds related to the official medical equipment purchases for Quetta's Kidney Centre as its chief executive.

US cuts $200mn in aid to Palestinians, sparking criticisms

US cuts $200mn in aid to Palestinians, sparking criticisms
The United States has canceled over $200 million in funds for the Palestinian Authority, leading Palestinian officials to denounce the move as “blackmail.”

In a statement released on Friday, a senior US State Department official said that the decision came following a review of US assistance to the Palestinian Authority ordered by US President Donald Trump.

"We have undertaken a review of US assistance to the Palestinian Authority and in the West Bank and Gaza to ensure these funds are spent in accordance with US national interests and provide value to the US taxpayer," said the official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity.

"As a result of that review, at the direction of the president, we will redirect more than $200 million in FY2017 Economic Support Funds originally planned for programs in the West Bank and Gaza, " he added, noting that the funds would "now address high-priority projects elsewhere."

Another unnamed State Department official also stressed that the US administration would "work with Congress to redirect these funds to other policy priorities.”

In a similar move back in January, the US government announced that it would withhold $65 million of a $125 million aid installment to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

US abandoning international obligations

The secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) slammed the US decision to cut aid to the Palestinians.

“This is flagrant declaration that the real aim of US aid is to interfere in the internal affairs of other peoples and affect their national rights,” Saeb Erekat said in a statement on Saturday.

Erekat said the US decision to cut aid “is a sign that [Washington] had abandoned its international obligations,” stressing, “The Palestinian people reject any conditional aid.”

US using blackmail as political tool

Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the executive committee of the PLO, also condemned the fresh US aid cut, accusing Washington of using "cheap blackmail as a political tool."

"The Palestinian people and leadership will not be intimidated and will not succumb to coercion," she said. “There is no glory in constantly bullying and punishing people under occupation.”

Additionally, Husam Zomlot, head of the PLO General Delegation, censured the US aid cut, warning, "Weaponizing humanitarian and developmental aid as political blackmail does not work."

"After Jerusalem [al-Quds] and UNRWA, this is another confirmation of abandoning the two-state solution and fully embracing [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu's anti-peace agenda," he said.

The US-Palestine ties deteriorated last December, when US President Trump declared Jerusalem al-Quds as the “capital” of Israel and announced plans to transfer the embassy from Tel Aviv to the occupied city.

The contentious move led Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to formally declare that the Palestinians would no longer accept the US as a mediator to resolve the conflict because Washington was “completely biased” towards Tel Aviv.

The US embassy relocation took place on May 14, the eve of the 70th anniversary of Nakba Day (the Day of Catastrophe). The move sparked angry reactions by the Palestinians and drew the criticism of the international community.

UNRWA chief: US cut aid to punish Palestinians

Separately on Friday, the UNRWA head suggested that the US had slashed the agency's budget to punish the Palestinians for their criticism of Washington's recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as Israel’s "capital."

“I can say with a great degree of confidence that the decision was not related to UNRWA’s performance because in November I had received very constructive and openly positive feedback on those issues,” Pierre Kraehenbuehl told the Associated Press.

“A few weeks later, tensions increased around the question of Jerusalem [al-Quds],” he added. “It appears that the humanitarian funding to UNRWA got caught up in the deep polarization around that question.”

Earlier this month, the American magazine Foreign Policy obtained emails written by Jared Kushner, Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, to senior US officials in which he pressured Jordan to remove the refugee status of millions of Palestinians in a bid to disrupt UNRWA's work.

Kraehenbuehl, however, warned that the Palestinian refugee issue would not go away, saying, “One cannot simply wish 5 million people away."

He further underlined the need for a “political solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in which the issue of refugees would be properly addressed.

US Senator McCain dead at 81 after battling brain cancer

US Senator McCain dead at 81 after battling brain cancer
Republican US Senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam who ran unsuccessfully for president as a self-styled maverick Republican in 2008 and became a prominent critic of President Donald Trump, died on Saturday, his office said. He was 81.

McCain, a US senator from Arizona for over three decades, had been battling glioblastoma — an aggressive brain cancer, discovered by his doctors in July 2017 — and had not been at the US Capitol in 2018. He also had surgery for an intestinal infection in April of this year.

A statement from his office said: “Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 PM on August 25, 2018. With the senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family. At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years.”

No further details were immediately provided.

His family had announced on Friday that McCain was discontinuing further cancer treatment.

His wife, Cindy McCain, wrote: "My heart is broken. I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years.

"He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in [the] place he loved best."

His daughter, Meghan, simply wrote: "I love you forever - my beloved father."

Alternatively affable and cantankerous, McCain had been in the public eye since the 1960s, when as a naval aviator he was shot down during the Vietnam War and tortured by his North Vietnamese communist captors during 5-1/2 years as a prisoner.

He was edged out by George W. Bush for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000 but became his party’s White House candidate eight years later. After gambling on political neophyte Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate, McCain lost in 2008 to Democrat Barack Obama, who became the first black US president.

McCain, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was a frequent critic as well as a target of his fellow Republican, Trump, who was elected president in November 2016.

McCain denounced Trump for among other things his praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders the senator described as foreign “tyrants.”

“Flattery secures his friendship, criticism his enmity,” McCain said of Trump in his memoir, The Restless Wave, which was released in May.

McCain in July had castigated Trump for his summit with Putin, issuing a statement that called their joint news conference in Helsinki “one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory.”

He said Trump was “not only unable but unwilling to stand up to Putin.”

Sources close to McCain have said Trump would not be invited to the funeral.

Shortly after McCain’s death was announced, Trump tweeted: My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain.”

McCain, a foreign policy hawk with a traditional Republican view of world affairs, was admired in both parties for championing civility and compromise during an era of acrid partisanship in US politics. But he also had a famous temper and rarely shied away from a fight. He had several with Trump.

Thumbs-down

He was the central figure in one of the most dramatic moments in Congress of Trump’s presidency when he returned to Washington shortly after his brain cancer diagnosis for a middle-of-the-night Senate vote in July 2017.

Still bearing a black eye and scar from surgery, McCain gave a thumbs-down signal in a vote to scuttle a Trump-backed bill that would have repealed the Obamacare healthcare law and increased the number of Americans without health insurance by millions.

Trump was furious about McCain’s vote and frequently referred to it at rallies, but without mentioning McCain by name.

After Trump in 2015 launched his presidential campaign, McCain condemned his hard-line rhetoric on illegal immigration and said Trump had “fired up the crazies.” Trump retorted that McCain was “not a war hero,” adding: “I like people who weren’t captured.”

After Trump became president, McCain blasted what he called the president’s attempts to undermine the free press and rule of law, and lamented the “half-baked, spurious nationalism” of the Trump era.

McCain denounced Trump’s performance at a summit meeting with Putin in July as “a tragic mistake,” adding, “The damage inflicted by President Trump’s naivete, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate.”

McCain vs Obama

McCain, the son and grandson of US Navy admirals, was elected to the US House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982 after more than two decades of Navy service.

He served four years in the House before Arizona voters elected him to the Senate in 1986 to replace Barry Goldwater, the 1964 Republican presidential nominee revered by conservatives.

In running for president in 2008, McCain tried to succeed an unpopular fellow Republican in Bush, who was leaving office with the country mired in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and stuck in a financial crisis.

It was a stark contrast between McCain, then a 72-year-old veteran of the Washington establishment, and the 47-year-old Obama, who was offering a “Yes, we can” message of change.

McCain tried to inject some youth and enthusiasm into his campaign with his selection of Palin, Alaska’s governor, as his running mate. But the choice backfired as her political inexperience and shaky performances in media interviews raised concerns about her qualifications.

In his new book, McCain voiced regret for not choosing then-Senator Joe Lieberman, a Democrat turned independent, as his running mate.

McCain wrote that he had originally settled on Lieberman, Democrat Al Gore’s running mate in the 2000 election, but was warned by Republican leaders that Lieberman’s views on social issues, including support for abortion rights, would “fatally divide” the party.

“It was sound advice that I could reason for myself,” McCain wrote. “But my gut told me to ignore it and I wish I had.”

Obama won 53 percent of the vote to McCain’s 45.6 percent.

War injuries

During the Vietnam War, McCain flew attack planes off aircraft carriers. He was preparing for a bombing run in 1967 when a missile inadvertently fired from another plane hit his fuel tanks, triggering a fatal explosion and fire. He suffered shrapnel wounds.

A few months later on October 26, 1967, McCain’s A-4 Skyhawk was shot down on a bombing mission over North Vietnam’s capital and he suffered two broken arms and a broken leg in the crash. A mob then dragged him from a lake, broke his shoulder and stabbed him.

Held at the notorious “Hanoi Hilton” prison and other sites, McCain was beaten and tortured, suffering broken bones and dysentery. He was released on March 14, 1973, but was left with permanent infirmities.

In Congress, McCain built a generally conservative record, opposing abortion and advocating higher defence spending. He supported Bush’s 2003 invasion of Iraq and criticized Obama for not doing more to intervene in Syria’s civil war.

Still, he prided himself on his reputation as a maverick and had a history of working across party lines on immigration, climate change and campaign finance reform.

He also spoke out against the Bush administration’s use of waterboarding, a torture technique that simulates drowning, and other harsh interrogation tactics on detainees in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

He urged the closure of the prison for foreign terrorism suspects at the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and also sponsored an anti-torture measure that passed Congress in 2005.

In a 2002 memoir, McCain wrote, “I’m an independent-minded, well-informed public servant to some. And to others, I’m a self-styled, self-righteous maverick pain in the ass.”

John Sidney McCain III was born on August 29, 1936, at an American naval installation in the Panama Canal Zone — US territory at the time — when his father was stationed there.

He conceded he was a “smart ass” during his years at the US Naval Academy and graduated fifth from the bottom of his class.

McCain divorced his wife Carol after 15 years of marriage in 1980 and weeks later married the former Cindy Henley, daughter of a wealthy beer distributor in Arizona.

A dark period for McCain came as one of the “Keating Five” group of senators accused of improperly intervening with federal regulators to help political contributor and bank executive Charles Keating, whose Lincoln Savings and Loan failed in 1989 at a cost to taxpayers of $3.4 billion.

McCain was cleared of wrongdoing in 1991, but the Senate Ethics Committee rebuked him for poor judgment.

On July 25, 2017, McCain delivered a Senate floor speech not long after his cancer diagnosis that was widely seen as his farewell address. It included a call to fellow Republicans to stand up to Trump and for all lawmakers to work together to keep America as a “beacon of liberty” in the world.

“That is the cause that binds us and is so much more powerful and worthy than the small differences that divide us,” McCain said.

Judge seeks extension in deadline of references against Sharifs: sources
The accountability court judge, hearing corruption references against the Sharif family, has written a letter to the Supreme Court seeking extension in deadline to finish the trials in remaining two references, sources informed.

The apex court had initially given 6-month deadline to the accountability court for concluding the trials, however, the Accountability Court-1 judge took extension in the deadline four times.

Last time, the Supreme Court had on July 10 extended the deadline by 6 weeks.

Sources said the Accountability Court-II judge, Arshad Mailk, has written to the apex court seeking an extension.

The judge, in his letter, has requested the Supreme Court for extension to conclude Al-Azizia and Flagship Investment references, the sources added.

A three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, will conduct a hearing on August 27 with regard to extension in deadline of references.

On July 6, after four extensions in the original six-month deadline to conclude all three cases, the court had announced its verdict in the Avenfield reference.

Accountability court Judge Mohammad Bashir had announced the verdict handing the ousted prime minister 10 years as jail time and seven years to his daughter Maryam Nawaz.

The trial against the Sharif family commenced on September 14, 2017. Nawaz and his sons, Hussain and Hasan, are accused in all three references whereas Maryam and Safdar were accused in the Avenfield reference only.

The two brothers, based abroad, have been absconding since the proceedings began last year and were declared proclaimed offenders by the court.

Disciplinary committee of Pti hands Imran Shah 0.5m fine
The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Karachi's Disciplinary Committee on Saturday declared its verdict in the inquiry held against MPA Dr Imran Shah for assaulting a Karachi citizen.

The committee announced that Shah will donate Rs500,000 as a 'fine' to the Edhi Homes Orphanage Centres and also provide free medical treatment to 20 orthopaedic patients recommended by Edhi Trust.

The committee has also warned Shah that any further misdemeanour on his part will lead to his expulsion from the party.

"No individual has the right to take [the] law in their hands and there is an added responsibility over the people in power to especially make sure that the law is at all times enforced and never abused," the committee said in its statement.

A video of Shah assaulting a citizen on August 14 had sparked outrage on social media after it went viral.

Shah was caught on video slapping a man identified as Dawood Chauhan multiple times during a heated argument in the middle of a road. The video showed Shah accompanied by armed guards, who also threatened the man.

Subsequently, PTI had taken [notice of the incident][3] and suspended the lawmaker, prompting Shah to post a video in which he sought an open apology for "hurting anyone's feelings", and insisting that he had only "pushed" Chauhan, even though the clip circulating on the internet had shown him raising his hand and hitting the man multiple times.

Further, PML-N leader Pervaiz Rashid on Friday said the party will consider supporting Ahsan for the post of president if he apologises to incarcerated former premier Nawaz Sharif.

However, responding to Rashid's comments, Ahsan in a media talk said that the PML-N’s demand is "non-serious and non-political”.

The PTI has approved the nomination of Dr Arif Alvi as the party’s candidate for the post of president.

Three things your nose tells about your health

Three things your nose tells about your health
While it is not usual for the nose to be able to tell a lot about your health, we can tell you three things that your sense of smell, or not, just might be able to tell you.

Let’s have a look at 3 such surprising things that your nose can signal about your overall health and impending diseases if any.

A bad sense of smell may signal an early death

A bad sense of smell is acceptable if you have caught a bout of cold, but if your nose isn’t particularly good at doing its basic job–smelling– it may point towards some more deep-rooted issues regarding your health.

According to a study conducted by the University of Chicago Medical Center, the olfactory dysfunction predicts 5-year mortality rate in older adults. Basically, if you are not able to detect certain smells, there is an increased chance of dying within the next 5 years.

In the research, it was found that 39 percent of older adults who couldn’t smell odors like the rose, peppermint and orange died early as compared to 19 percent of people with okay-okay smell sense and 10 percent of people with good olfactory sense.

Hallucinating smells? It can be migraine

If you are often smelling things in the air which are not quite around, we have a bad news for you too. According to a review of research conducted by the Montefiore Headache Center, imagining odors may be a part of the pre-migraine aura.

Poor smell detection may mean Alzheimer’s

A study conducted by the Harvard Medical School study directly links poor smelling abilities to the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

The research found that participants who had higher levels of amyloid plaques performed worse on odor identification test and had greater brain cell death.

NASA spacecraft approaches asteroid, snaps first picture

NASA spacecraft approaches asteroid, snaps first picture
Two years after launching from Florida, a NASA spacecraft is closing in on an ancient asteroid, Bennu, for a sample of space dust that could reveal clues to the start of life in the solar system.

The spacecraft, OSIRIS-REx, has even snapped its first, blurry pic of the cosmic body, which is about the size of a small mountain, about 500 yards (meters) in diameter.

The spacecraft is designed to circle Bennu, and reach out with a robotic arm to “high-five” its surface, then return the sample it collects to Earth in 2023.

The first images of Bennu were taken on August 17 at a distance of 1.4 million miles (2.3 million kilometers) from the $800 million spacecraft.

“This is the closest we have even been to Bennu,” said Dante Lauretta, OSIRIS-REx principal investigator at the University of Arizona, Tucson.

“This is significant in that we are now in the vicinity of the asteroid, closer than we have ever been even during the close approaches of the asteroid to the Earth.”

Bennu was chosen from the some 500,000 asteroids in the solar system because it orbits close to Earth’s path around the sun, it is the right size for scientific study, and is one of the oldest asteroids known to NASA.

Astronomers say it poses a slight risk — a one in 2,700 chance — of colliding with Earth in 2135.

It is also a carbon-rich asteroid, the kind of cosmic body that may have delivered life-giving materials to Earth billions of years ago.

The OSIRIS-REx mission is not the first to ever visit an asteroid and attempt a sample return — Japan has done it before and Europe has managed to land on a comet.

But it is the first asteroid-sample-return mission for NASA, and it aims to bring back the biggest sample ever, on the order of 2.1 ounces (60 grams).

The US men who walked on the Moon during the Apollo era of the 1960s and 1970s collected and carried back to Earth 842 pounds (382 kilograms) of moon rocks.

In December, the spacecraft will begin a detailed survey of asteroid’s surface, which NASA has defined as “arrival” at the asteroid.

Orbital insertion is expected on December 31.

The sample, however, will not be taken until July 2020.

OSIRIS-REx stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer.

Diesel price to be cut by as much as Rs17: petroleum minister

Diesel price to be cut by as much as Rs17: petroleum minister
The prices of diesel will be reduced by as much as Rs17, Federal Petroleum Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan said Friday night.

The minister said the strategy for the near future was to slash diesel prices down to levels similar to that of petrol. It was unclear as to whether the decreased rates will favourably impact fares and other costs related to goods transport.

Sarwar also shared that reserves of crude oil and natural gas had been found in Sanghar.

During his press conference, he also noted that Pakistan's new leadership will be working to speed up work on the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) Pipeline, alternatively known as the Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline.

The petroleum minister noted that plans pertaining to liquefied natural gas (LNG) that were earlier kept hidden from the public will now be brought out in the open.

Earlier on August 1, the then-caretaker finance ministry had announced that the prices of petroleum products were to be maintained at existing levels for the month.

Despite the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority's (OGRA) request to bump up the rates owing to higher costs in the global market, the notification had said the rates were retained at the then-levels to provide relief to the common man.

Accordingly, the notification mentioned that the prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene, and light diesel were to remain at per-litre rates of Rs95.24, Rs112.94, Rs83.96, and Rs75.37, respectively.

Trump declares emergency as Hawaii braces for hurricane

Hurricane Lane drenched Hawaii
Hurricane Lane drenched Hawaii Thursday ahead of its arrival in the island state, prompting US President Donald Trump to declare a state of emergency as landslides and flash flooding left roads blocked.

The National Weather Service said Lane — located about 200 miles south of Hawaii — remained a powerful hurricane, packing winds in excess of 130 miles per hour, although it was downgraded to category three mid-afternoon local time.

The eye was expected to sweep very close to or over the islands, 2,000 miles southwest of the mainland US, sometime later Thursday.

Up to 12 inches of rain had already fallen before dawn, according to federal authorities, with 30 inches expected in the worst-hit areas over the coming four to five days.

"Someone once told me it wasn´t raining when Noah built the Ark," American Red Cross vice-president Brad Kieserman told a news conference in Washington.

"That means that readiness is important — readiness to make sure we can fulfill our responsibility and the critical infrastructure lifelines."

Emergency teams have set up 16 evacuation centers, with a further 19 due to open throughout the day, authorities said, as Trump urged Hawaiians to hunker down and prepare for the worst.

"Our teams are closely coordinating with the state and local authorities. You are in our thoughts!" Trump tweeted.

'Panic mode'

Brock Long, chief of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said: "We are extremely concerned about the potentials for inland flooding, landslides occurring and damage to the transportation, communications infrastructure."

Residents across the state were stocking up on water, food, gasoline and emergency supplies as Lane drew nearer.

"Last couple of days it´s been like this — it´s been busy," said Chris, an employee at a gas station in Haleiwa, on the north shore of Oahu island — the location of the capital Honolulu.

"We have been just constantly getting cars filling up. Everybody is in a panic mode right now — everyone is filling up gas, gas cans, propane cans and all that."

Landslides and flooding caused by the first rainstorm partially blocked several roads on Big Island, according to local media.

Sea levels were expected to rise as much as two to four feet above normal tide levels, causing coastal erosion and prompting a storm surge and "large and destructive waves."

Surfers were observed taking advantage of the calm before the storm to get out on their boards one last time Wednesday before the ocean got too violent.

Flights canceled

United Airlines announced it had canceled all Friday flights to and from Kahului International Airport on Maui, the second-largest island.

Honolulu authorities said they were planning to activate a three-minute island-wide outdoor siren warning system at 4:00 pm (0200 GMT Friday) to alert the public to the possibility of severe flooding.

Free transport will be available between the capital and Oahu island´s evacuation shelters, which had welcomed around 350 people by noon, according to the Maui 24/7 local news portal.

The US Coast Guard said 57,000 US military personnel already stationed in Hawaii stood ready to launch search and rescue missions, and provide logistics and medical support.

"Hurricane Lane is not a well-behaved hurricane," Governor David Ige said in a statement as he declared a state of emergency Tuesday on Big Island. "I´ve not seen such dramatic changes in the forecast track as I´ve seen with this storm.

Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii and the last major storm to strike the state was nearly three decades ago, when Hurricane Iniki barreled into the island of Kauai, leaving six people dead and causing billions of dollars in damage.

Federal officials have been working with Hawaiian utility managers to keep a close eye on the power grid, a major vulnerability in Puerto Rico last year when it was hit by Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 storm.

Hurricane-related deaths in Puerto Rico have been estimated at as many as 4,600 people, largely because prolonged and widespread power outages and washed out roads prevented access to health care, according to US researchers.

Scott Morrison is new Australian PM after bitter coup

Scott Morrison is new Australian PM after bitter coup
Scott Morrison was installed as Australia´s seventh prime minister in 11 years Friday after a stunning Liberal party revolt instigated by conservatives unseated moderate Malcolm Turnbull.

Former home affairs minister Peter Dutton, an ex-police officer and right-winger, was the driving force behind the move to oust Turnbull after a party backlash against his more liberal policies.

But after a torrid week of political intrigue in Canberra it was Morrison, a Turnbull ally who served as treasurer, who won a party vote 45-40.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, another Turnbull backer, was also in the running but was eliminated in the first round of voting.

"My course from here is to provide absolute loyalty to Scott Morrison," Dutton, who Turnbull accused of bullying and intimidation in the move to knife him, said in brief comments afterwards.

Turnbull, who has pledged to quit parliament after his near three-year reign came to an end, survived one attempt to oust him on Tuesday, but ministers then began defecting, throwing the government into crisis.

His departure from politics will spark a by-election for his Sydney seat, threatening the government´s wafer-thin one-seat parliamentary majority.

Thwarted ambitions

Dutton, who favours slashing migrant numbers and even pulling Australia out of the Paris climate agreement, was the sole candidate to be prime minister until Thursday when Morrison and Bishop entered the fray to try to halt his power grab.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott, an arch conservative widely seen as the instigator of the move to get rid of Turnbull, said it was now important to "save the government" with national elections due by the middle of next year.

Turnbull must now pay a visit to the Governor-General to officially inform him of events and once there will recommend Morrison to form a new government.

Morrison, an evangelical Christian and former immigration minister, who took credit for "stop the boats" — a harsh policy to halt asylum-seekers from entering Australia — is further to the right than Turnbull but not as hardline as some in the party.

The unrest is the latest chapter in a turbulent decade for Australian politics, which has frequently descended into manoeuvering and backstabbing that has alienated voters.

No leader has managed to serve out a full term since former Prime Minister John Howard lost the 2007 election, in a remarkable revolving door at Canberra´s parliament house.

Dutton needed to prove he had majority backing before launching his tilt at the leadership, or 43 signatures from within the party's parliamentary group — a requirement for him to force a second crack at the top job.

Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne, another Turnbull ally, blasted disruptive elements inside his party for bringing on the challenge.

"I think some people should have considered the greater good of the people of Australia, and the government, rather than their own self-interest and ambition," he said.

Complicating matters, Dutton was referred to the solicitor-general over his eligibility to sit in parliament due to family financial interests in childcare centres that receive government subsidies — a possible breach of constitutional rules.

The nation´s top lawyer Friday cleared him to continue in parliament.

One minister was so disillusioned with the push to oust Turnbull that he took to Twitter to apologise to the Australian people.

"Australia. We owe you an apology. I'm sorry. You deserve better than many of the things our Federal Parliament has served up to you for the past 10 years," wrote Nationals MP Darren Chester, whose party is in coalition with the Liberals.

Federal cabinet bans use of all discretionary funds

PM Imran chairs cabinet meeting to review 7-point agenda
The federal cabinet on Wednesday has decided to ban use of all discretionary funds of President, Prime Minister and Members National Assembly (MNAs) as it is an insult to tax payers.

1. Discretionary funds abolished

The cabinet decided to abolish discretionary funds for ministers, MPs and the prime minister.

Chaudhry, terming it the "most important announcement" of today's meeting, criticised the previous government for doling out huge funds to MNAs. He said former premier Nawaz Sharif in his last year as premier used Rs21 billion as part of the discretionary funds. MPAs were given Rs30b, he said.

If required we will bring a legislative amendment to implement the change, he added.

Previously, Nawaz used to "distribute" projects during rallies in various parts of the country, Fawad said, adding that this will no longer happen.

2. First class facility discontinued for visits abroad

PM Imran will not use his special plane for foreign visits. The prime minister will not travel first but on club class.

The government has also decided to discontinue the facility of first class travel to all ministries, chief justice and president, who will now use club class.

3. PM Imran summons report on load shedding

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed concern over load-shedding during Eid and has summoned a detailed report on the power distribution systems.

4. Special audit of mass transport system in the country

The cabinet has decided to carry out forensic audit of mass-transport projects in Multan, Islamabad, Lahore, as well as the Orange train project, started under the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government.

"Billions were spent on these projects. Despite spending so much money, they still require funds to operate. If need be the [Federal Investigation Agency] FIA will be tasked to investigate this," Chaudhry said.

The government will also carry out audit of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa metro project.

5. Massive urban tree plantation in the country

Urban tree plantation project will be launched in major cities. Details will be given next month by the environment minister. Chaudhry said this is the need of the hour, especially in Karachi due to the heatweave in the city.

6. Saturday to remain holiday

A summary seeking to increase working days to six for government offices was presented during the cabinet meeting. According to the summary, government offices will remain open on Saturday.

Chaudhry, however, said the cabinet had decided to continue with five-day work week, but the work hours have changed. The new work hours will be from 9am to 5pm.

7. Launch of a major cleanliness drive in the country

A taskforce has been formed to formulate plans for carrying out cleanliness drive on a major scale in the country.

Cabinet approves forensic audit of Punjab and KPK mass transit systems

Cabinet approves forensic audit of Punjab and KPK mass transit systems
In what Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry described as "a historic decision", Prime Minister Imran Khan's cabinet on Friday decided to ban the use of discretionary funds of the president, premier and MNAs in view of the new government's austerity drive.

Chaudhry, who held a press conference after a cabinet meeting, claimed that the previous government had used Rs51 billion in discretionary funds in the last year alone, of which Rs21bn was used by former PM Nawaz Sharif, while Rs30bn was given to MNAs to spend.

Chaudhry, while observing how Sharif would announce development projects during public gatherings, especially around the time the Panama Papers were released, described the act of spending money impulsively as "contempt of taxpayers' money".

He added that before any infrastructural project is announced, it would be discussed in Parliament and then expenditure would be made.

Chaudhry also said that it had been decided that PM Khan would not use the special plane provided to premiers for foreign visits, nor would he travel first class.

Instead he will choose to travel in "club class", Chaudhry said, referring to a class of air travel that is below first class, but higher than economy class. He added that all ministers would also travel in club class.

Along with the prime minister, the president, foreign minister, the Senate chairman and national assembly speaker will no longer have the prerogative of flying first class, he added.

When asked by a reporter if these measures apply to the chief justice of Pakistan as well, the information minister replied: "Yes, the chief justice has also been requested to do the same".

Referring to a summary regarding a possible new work week and timings for government employees that was discussed during the cabinet meeting, Chaudhry announced that government employees will now work from 9am-5pm instead of 8am-3pm.

He added that Saturday would remain a holiday, quelling earlier fears that people might have to work six days a week.

Chaudhry announced that the cabinet had also decided that a forensic audit of the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa mass transit systems must be conducted.

"A forensic audit of the projects is to be carried out and, if necessary, the Federal Investigation Agency can then carry out an investigation," he added.

Additionally, the cabinet has also approved urban tree plantation plans for Karachi, Lahore, Quetta and Peshawar, for which the environment minister will provide details next month, he said.

US handout on Imran-Pompeo call 'contrary to facts: Foreign Minister

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on Friday that the US State Department's readout on the phone call between Prime Minister Imran Khan and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo is 'contrary to facts'.

Earlier, the Pakistan Foreign Office categorically rejected the statement by the State Department regarding contents of a phone call between Prime Minister Imran Khan and Mike Pompeo.

"Secretary Pompeo raised the importance of Pakistan taking decisive action against all terrorists operating in Pakistan and its vital role in promoting the Afghan peace process,” said the readout issued by the US authorities.

The foreign minister in his press conference at the Foreign Office said that he directed the foreign secretary to issue an immediate rebuttal over the statements issued from the Washington DC.

"Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in his conversation with the prime minister said he wanted a constructive and productive relationship. I am looking forward to his visit and engage with him for peace and stability and look and areas where both countries stand to gain," the foreign minister added.
Qureshi confirmed that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will arrive in Islamabad on September 5.

"We don't share the same cordial relations with the US as we had before in the past. The US authorities have to understand Pakistan's view," he said. "I believe that the meeting between Prime Minister Imran Khan and US Secretary of State will be very important."

The foreign minister said that Pakistan no longer remains the darling of the West in the changing international political dynamics.

"We have a longstanding bilateral relationship with the US which has had its ups and downs. This is an important bilateral relationship. In order to bring relations with the US to a past level; there is a need to understand the situation and needs in Afghanistan," he added.
The foreign minister reiterated that Pakistan will have to make the US understand its genuine reservations over certain policy matters.

Qureshi said that the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has sent a message requesting a visit to Pakistan on August 30-31. "We will welcome the Iranian Foreign Minister on his Pakistan visit," he added.

The Chinese foreign minister is expected to arrive in Pakistan on September 8, he said, adding that the Japanese foreign minister is also expected to visit Pakistan at the end of August.
Qureshi said that as per the directives issued by the Prime Minister on the austerity drive, he has decided to not stay in the 5-star hotels during foreign official trips.

"I will try to stay in our embassies wherever possible. The foreign minister has the legal authority to travel first class but I will not do this and will prefer business class travel. We will try to avoid big delegations have limited entourage," he said.

The foreign minister said that in view of curtailing unnecessary travel abroad, no minister or secretary will be allowed to travel abroad without the permission of the prime minister.

“We should try to save as much foreign exchange as possible. The objective of this is to evaluate what will be the benefit of travelling abroad to Pakistan. If there is no need to travel abroad it should be avoided," the foreign minister said.

The foreign minister stressed that dialogue was an essential part for relations between Pakistan and India to move forward. “We are not shy of engagement.

In his first speech, the prime minister made it clear that if you [India] take one step forward we will take two. We need positive signalling.”

Quershi also thanked India’s External Affairs minister for sending him a congratulatory letter but emphasised that you “need two to tango.”

“I want to ask the Indian foreign minister if there is any other option than dialogue. In my opinion, there isn’t. When there is dialogue, regardless of the progress the climate is improved.”

The foreign minister added that everyone was aware that Kashmir was a core issue, but there were other issues such as the water crisis which needed to be discussed between the two South Asian neighbours.

PML-N leaders meet Nawaz, Maryam at Adiala jail

PML-N leaders meet Nawaz, Maryam at Adiala jail
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders and members of Sharf family met with former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz at Adiala Jail on Friday.

Nawaz's family members and PML-N members had submitted a request to meet the former premier and his daughter in Adiala jail where they are serving their sentences in relation to Avenfield properties case, sources said.

Authorities have allocated Thursday for visitors, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, wanting to meet Maryam and Nawaz.
However, due to Eid holidays, nobody could meet the former premier and his daughter on that day and the Sharif family and PML-N leaders had requested that they be allowed to meet the two on Friday.

Khawaja Asif, Senator Tanvir Chauhdry, Abdul Qadir Baloch, Musaddiq Malik and Maryam Aurangzeb were among party leaders who arrived at the jail to meet the former premier.

Maryam's daughter and son-in-law were also among the attendees.

Speaking to the media outside the jail, Asif said, "I have come to meet Nawaz today as we weren't allowed to the past two days."

"I will not talk about anything related to the presidential election or politics," he said.

Earlier on Wednesday, sources said PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and a few of his family members met Nawaz and Maryam in Adiala jail. Shehbaz, Hamza Shehbaz and Nawaz’s mother met the two on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha with special permission, sources said.

Nawaz and Maryam are currently serving their prison terms at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, after the former premier was sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison while his daughter was sentenced to eight years in a corruption reference in July.
