United States welcomes opening of Kartarpur corridor

US State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus
The US welcomed the opening of the Kartarpur corridor, saying that it sees the initiative as a positive example.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday formally inaugurated the historic corridor to facilitate visa-free entry of Indian Sikh pilgrims to one of Sikhism's holiest shrines in Pakistani town of Narowal.

The US "welcomes the opening of a new border crossing" between India and Pakistan, "the Kartarpur corridor," US State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a video posted on her official twitter handle.

The newly opened corridor is a step towards promoting greater religious freedom," she said.

Ortagus also sent her best wishes to the pilgrims crossing the border for the 550th birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev.

"It allows Indian Sikh pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib, an important Sikh house of worship just inside the Pakistan border. This impressive project will transform a remote three-acre site across a sensitive international boundary," Ortagus said.

"Congratulations to Pakistan on this initiative, and our best wishes to the pilgrims making the crossing for the 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak's birth," Ortagus said.

Guru Nanak Dev spent the last 18 years of his life at Kartarpur Sahib, which has now become the world's largest Sikh Gurdwara.

Moody’s cuts India’s outlook to negative

Moody’s cuts India’s outlook to negative
Moody’s Investors Service cut India’s ratings outlook to “negative” from “stable”, citing increasing risks that Asia’s third largest economy will grow at a slower pace than in the past, sending stock markets nearly 1 per cent lower at Friday’s close.

However, Moody’s retained the country’s foreign and local currency ratings at ‘Baa2’.

The cut in outlook partly reflected government and policy ineffectiveness in addressing economic weakness, which has led to an increase in debt burden, Moody’s said.

The ratings agency also cut its outlook for 21 Indian companies, including State Bank of India, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, Infosys Ltd and NTPC Ltd to “negative” from “stable”.

India’s economy grew 5pc year-on-year between April and June, its weakest pace since 2013, which had prompted a slew of interest rate cuts by the central bank and forcing the government to cut corporate taxes sharply.

Moody’s now expects a government deficit of 3.7pc of GDP in the fiscal year ending in March 2020, compared with a government target of 3.3pc.

“The depth and duration of India’s growth slowdown, prolonged financial stress among rural households, weak job creation, and, more recently, a credit crunch among non-bank financial institutions have increased the probability of a more entrenched slowdown,” Moody’s said.

The ratings agency said it does not expect the credit crunch among non-bank financial institutions to be resolved quickly.

In response, the finance ministry said the economy’s fundamentals remained “quite robust”.

“India continues to be among the fastest growing major economies in the world, India’s relative standing remains unaffected,” the ministry said in a statement.

However, Indian bourses inched lower, with the broader Nifty 50 index closing down 0.86pc. The rupee weakened to 71.25 against the dollar by 1019 GMT, versus Thursday’s close of 70.965.

3 dead, dozens injured as Australia wildfires raze homes

 Australia wildfires
Wildfires razing Australia’s drought-stricken east coast have left three people dead and several missing, more than 30 injured and over 150 homes destroyed, officials said on Saturday.

Around 1,500 firefighters were battling more than 70 fires across Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales, with the most intense in the northeast, where flames were fanned by strong winds, Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said.

A woman who was found unconscious and with serious burns on Friday near Glen Innes died in a hospital, he said.

Her daughter-in-law Chrystal Harwood identified the victim as 69-year-old grandmother Vivian Chaplain, who was alone in her house in the small community of Wytaliba when it was engulfed in flames.

“I was the last one to speak to her. She was in an absolute panic. She said: ‘We’re on fire. There’s fire everywhere. I need the boys here now',” Harwood told Nine Network television of their final phone call.

“Before I even got to tell her to just get out, she’d hung up on me. I couldn’t get back through to her. I tried so many times,” Harwood said. “She was amazing. She was such a strong, loving woman.”

On Friday, Harwood made a desperate plea on social media for someone to come to Chaplain’s rescue.

“Viv is alone can someone help, anyone please [...] boys are on the way down if they can get through,” Harwood posted. "The RFS can’t get to her they are trying [...] the road down is a tunnel of fire.”

Firefighters found another body on Saturday in a burned car near Glen Innes, a victim of the same fire, officials said. The local man’s name has not been released.

A third body was found on Saturday afternoon in a burned building at Johns River, north of Taree, a police statement said. That victim died in a fire hundreds of kilometers from Glen Innes.

Another seven people have been reported missing in the vicinity of the Glen Innes fire, Fitzsimmons said.

“We are expecting that number (of missing people) to climb today,” he said. “There are really grave concerns that there could be more losses or indeed more fatalities.”

More than 30 people including firefighters received medical treatment for burns and one patient had cardiac arrest, he said.

At least 150 homes had been destroyed since Friday, and damage assessment teams had yet to reach some devastated areas, a Rural Fire Service statement said. Residents could not yet return because of the dangers of fire, smoke and loose asbestos in the rubble, the statement said.

Hundreds of people evacuated their homes along a 500-kilometer swath of the eastern seaboard from the Queensland state border south to Forster.

Forster is a town 300 kilometers north of Sydney, Australia’s largest city. Many spent the night in evacuation centers, while some slept in cars.

In Queensland, around 50 wildfires were raging on Saturday. At least one house was lost, a firefighter suffered a broken leg and 6,000 residents were evacuated from three communities in the state’s southeast, police said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison warned Australia to expect more bad news from the fire zones. His warning came before the third victim was confirmed.

“The devastating and horrific fires that we have seen particularly in New South Wales but also in Queensland have been absolutely chilling,” Morrison told reporters in Sydney.

The Insurance Council of Australia declared the wildfire crisis a “catastrophe”, meaning insurance claims will be given priority.

In Taree, more than 300 people evacuated overnight to a social club, including Club Taree’s chief executive, Morgan Stewart.

“It was pretty scary,” Stewart said. “We’re hearing lots of stories of lost houses, lost property, goods and effects, animals, land. It’s going to be horrific, I think.”

Peter Lean spent the night on the roof of his house in the town of Wallabi Point, extinguishing burning embers carried on strong winds.

“I’ve never seen the sky so red since 2000,” Lean said. “We’ve got winds blowing, they’re circling, it’s like a cyclone.”

The fire danger reached unprecedented levels in New South Wales on Friday, when 17 fires were burning at the most extreme danger rating known as the Emergency Warning Level.

“I can only recall a figure of less than 10 that we (previously) got to, which was an extraordinary event in years past,” Fitzsimmons said.

Between two and five fires were burning at the highest danger rating during Saturday.

The annual Australian fire season, which peaks during the Southern Hemisphere summer, has started early after an unusually warm and dry winter.

Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, situated in Kartarpur, is the second holiest place for the Sikh community. This is 120 km away from Lahore and situated in a small village of Kotheypind at the bank of River Ravi — at a distance of only 4 km from Pakistan-India border.

This village is included in Shakargarh tehsil of Narowal district and the beautiful white Gurdwara looks elegantly placed between the grasslands.

It has been said in the agreement reached between Pakistan and India that daily five thousand Sikh yatris (pilgrims) will be allowed to visit the Gurdwara through the Corridor.

To facilitate the Sikh yatris, the government has installed 130 counters, where their passports will be confirmed or scanned, and permit will be verified.

Pilgrims will be charged $20 each under service charges. However, they will be exempted from paying the charges on the day of the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak.

Indian top court gives Babri Masjid land to Hindus

Indian top court gives Babri Masjid land to Hindus
The top court of India on Saturday ruled that the disputed Babri Masjid land should be given to the Hindus, while ordering the Muslims be allotted an alternate land as a replacement for the destroyed Babri Masjid.

The Indian top court issued the order while reading out its verdict on the ownership of a centuries-old religious site claimed by both majority Hindus and Muslims.

At the beginning of the hearing, Indian Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi announced that the verdict was unanimous.

"Muslims should not be deprived of a structure; will get alternative site for masjid", the Indian Supreme Court said.

The order directed the Indian government that it should within three months formulate a scheme envisaging setting up of trust. It added that the possession of inner and outer courtyards will be handed over to the trust.

The trust will provide for construction of the temple on the disputed land.

It also ordered that a suitable plot of land measuring five acres to be handed over to Sunni Waqf Board either by the Indian government or the state government.

The court further gave liberty to Sunni Wakf Board to construct a mosque on the allotted land.

While reading out the verdict, Justice Gogoi said the decision was taken on the basis of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Quoting the ASI report, the Bench said, "The underlying structure in the disputed site was not of Islamic origin, however the report does not support whether the temple was demolished."

The court in its verdict also said the mosque was not built on a vacant land, as claimed by the Muslim petitioners.

However, the top Indian court ruled that the destruction of mosque was against the rule of law.

Meanwhile, in the first case, the Indian SC dismissed a plea of Shia Waqf Board against the Sunni Board on a claim to the Babri Masjid.

To another case, the Indian apex court ruled, "It will be inappropriate for it to play role of theologian and interpret Hadees. The apex court finds the Nirmohi Akhara’s suit barred by limitation, but says Ramlalla Virajman suit is within limitation period."

Thousands of paramilitary force members and police have been deployed in the northern town of Ayodhya, where Babri Masjid was razed in 1992 by hardline Hindus who believe the site is the birthplace of Lord Ram.

The destruction of the mosque triggered religious riots in which about 2,000 people, most of them Muslims, were killed across the country and led to a series of court battles with various groups staking claim to the site.

The verdict will decide the ownership of a plot of land of just 2.77 acres (1.1 hectares) that has been heavily protected since the 1992 clashes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party has long campaigned on a promise to support the construction of a Hindu temple on the site of the razed mosque.

“It may seem to be just a piece of land but for us it is a pious place where our god was born,” said a senior Hindu leader affiliated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party.

“We hope the court rules in favour of the Hindus,” said the leader, who declined to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue.

Whichever way it goes, the court decision is likely to have a significant impact on fraught relations between India’s Hindus and Muslims, who constitute 14 per cent of its 1.3 billion people.

The government has stepped up security not just in Ayodhya but in other communally sensitive areas and rapid action forces have been put on a high alert.

Two Indian players arrested in growing 'spot-fixing' scandal

Two Indian players arrested in growing 'spot-fixing' scandal
Two former Indian Premier League players have been arrested for spot-fixing in a scandal-ridden regional tournament, police said Thursday.

Wicketkeeper-batsman CM Gautam and Abrar Kazi were arrested in Bangalore by a special unit investigating corruption and fixing in the Karnataka Premier League.

Gautam, the 33-year-old former captain of Bellary Tuskers, and teammate Kazi allegedly accepted $28,000 each for "slow batting" in this year's tournament final against Hubli Tigers. The Tuskers lost the game by eight runs.

"The Central Crime Branch has made two important arrests in the KPL spot-fixing scandal," Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police, told AFP, naming Gautam and Kazi.

"They did spot-fixing in the KPL 2019 finals between Hubli and Bellary. They were paid two million rupees ($28,000) for slow batting.

"Also, they fixed another match against the Bangalore team. Further investigations are on and more arrests will be made."

Cricket has become a key battleground in the fight against spot-fixing -- illegal bets on a certain part of the action, such as how many runs are scored in an over.

The KPL has been under growing suspicion since Ashfaq Ali Thara, owner of a KPL team and a side in the Dubai T20 League, was arrested for placing bets and a possible role in fixing matches.

Two more players were arrested on charges of betting and match-fixing.

The IPL, the world's wealthiest national league, was hit by a spot-fixing scandal in 2013 which resulted in two teams being banned for two years.

Gautam was in the squad for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. Kazi played one game for Bangalore in 2011.

Twenty20 leagues around the world including the Pakistan Super League, Bangladesh Premier League and Dubai league have been hit by fixing scandals.

Bangladesh Test captain Shakib Al Hasan was banned for two years last month after failing to report approaches by bookies.

Indian media, quoting official sources, reported on Thursday evening that Sidhu had been given political clearance by the government to take part in the Kartarpur Corridor inauguration ceremony on the Pakistani side.

However, quoting sources, Indian media reported that Sidhu was granted permission only to travel as part of the first group coming from India for the pilgrimage to the Kartarpur Gurdwara, the world’s largest Sikh shrine and the final resting place of Sikhism founder Baba Guru Nanak.

The permission from the Indian government has come through after Sidhu wrote three letters requesting to Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar asking for the government's clearance for his visit.

In his third letter, Sidhu pleaded to Jaishankar for a reply, saying he would proceed to Pakistan other Sikh devotees if the minister doesn't respond.

"Despite repeated reminders you have not responded to whether or not the government has granted me permission to go to Pakistan for inauguration ceremony of Gurdwara Darbar Sahid Kartarpur Corridor. The delay and no response is a hindrance to my future course of action," the former cricketer wrote in his letter.

"I categorically state that if the government has any inhibitions and say no then, as a law abiding citizen, I will not go. But if you don’t respond to my third letter, then I will proceed to Pakistan as millions of Sikh devotees go on eligible Visa," he added.

The Times of India tweeted a copy of Sidhu's letter to Jaishankar.

The historic inauguration of the Kartarpur Corridor is set to take place on Saturday, November 9, just ahead of the 550th birthday of Sikhism founder Baba Guru Nanak on Nov 12.

US accuses two former Twitter employees of spying for Saudi Arabia

US accuses two former Twitter employees of spying for Saudi Arabia
Two former employees of Twitter and a third man from Saudi Arabia face US charges of spying for the kingdom by digging up private user data and giving it to Saudi officials in exchange for payment, a complaint from the US Department of Justice shows.

Ali Alzabarah and Ahmad Abouammo, who used to work for Twitter, and Ahmed Almutairi, who then worked for the Saudi royal family, face charges of working for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia without registering as foreign agents, according to the complaint filed against them on Wednesday.

The indictment points an unusually public finger at Saudi Arabia, a US ally that maintains warm ties with US President Donald Trump despite its spotty human rights record.

Many Republican and Democratic lawmakers are already deeply critical of Riyadh’s conduct of the war in Yemen and the 2018 murder at a Saudi consulate of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who had US residency and wrote for the Washington Post.

Despite the pressure, Trump has stood by the kingdom and its de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, who appears in the complaint as Royal Family Member-1, according to the Washington Post, which initially reported the charges.

The charges also put Silicon Valley companies in the spotlight once again over how they protect the intimate details they collect about their users, including from employees with no legitimate reason for accessing the information.

According to the complaint, Abouammo repeatedly accessed the Twitter account of a prominent critic of the Saudi royal family in early 2015. At one instance, he was able to view the email address and telephone number associated with the account.

He also accessed the account of a second Saudi critic to get personally identifiable information.

Twitter uncovered Alzabarah’s unauthorised access of private data and placed him on administrative leave in late 2015, but not before he had tapped data from over 6,000 accounts, including 33 for which Saudi authorities had submitted law enforcement requests to Twitter, the complaint said.

“This information could have been used to identify and locate the Twitter users who published these posts,” the US Justice Department said in a news release.

Almutairi, for his part, is accused of acting as a go-between for the Saudi government and the Twitter employees.

Abouammo, who is a US citizen, was arrested in Seattle, Washington while the other two are presumed to be in Saudi Arabia, the department said. Abouammo was ordered to remain behind bars pending a detention hearing Friday.

Payment for information

The two former Twitter employees were given cash and other rewards, such as an expensive watch, in exchange for the information they shared, the complaint said.

Abouammo later claimed the watch was worth $35,000 in communications with prospective buyers on Craigslist.org.

They appeared to have been cultivated by a senior Saudi official, identified by the Washington Post as Bader al-Asaker, Prince Mohammad’s close adviser who now heads the crown prince’s private office and charity MiSK.

Most contacts occurred in 2014 and 2015, when the crown prince was rising to power, according to the US complaint.

One man posted a photo of himself with the crown prince during his visit to Washington in May 2015, while another flew to Washington from San Francisco during the same time, the Justice Department complaint says.

The Saudi embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Twitter said it was grateful to the FBI and US Justice Department. “We recognise the lengths bad actors will go to try and undermine our service,” it said.

“Our company limits access to sensitive account information to a limited group of trained and vetted employees. We understand the incredible risks faced by many who use Twitter to share their perspectives with the world and to hold those in power accountable.”

Twitter would not comment on how it became aware of the two men’s activities or whether it alerted law enforcement.

Shehbaz to bring Nawaz to London for treatment

Shehbaz to bring Nawaz to London for treatment
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif will visit visit London for treatment with Shehbaz Sharif, it has been learnt reliably.

This correspondent has learnt that Shehbaz Sharif largely convinced Nawaz to agree to get treatment in London and stop insisting on getting treatment only in Lahore.

The source shared that Shehbaz will accompany Nawaz to London and he has already spoken to consultants at one of the Harley Street clinics where patients suffering form drop in platelets are treated privately.

The source added that a final decision will be made when Nawaz is discharged from Services Hospital. He will be treated at Sharif Medical hospital in Jati Umra. It is understood that Shehbaz has been speaking to Nawaz about the need of getting treatment abroad for many days, however, Nawaz refused to consider the option.

The trusted source further said Shehbaz has advised Nawaz to consider staying in London for at least five months for full treatment of all medical issues and recovery.

“Shehbaz Sharif has told his brother that his health comes before politics and everything else. Its important that Nawaz Sharif is in good health and he should get the best possible treatment at the best possible facilities,” the source said.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president's view, according to the source, has also been supported by Services Hospital’s Dr Mehmood Ayaz, who heads the panel of doctors overseeing the treatment of the former prime minister, who has advised Nawaz to go abroad for treatment.

Dr Ayaz has said the medical board set up for the PML-N leader's treatment would give in writing that he should undergo genetic test from abroad.

He said the foreign visit would become essential if doctors want to examine his body tissues in order to diagnose the exact cause of his illness.

On October 29, the Islamabad High Court suspended Sharif's sentence in the Al-Azizia corruption reference for eight weeks on medical grounds.

A two-member judge bench comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Mohsin Akhtar Kayani had earlier reserved the verdict on the plea seeking the suspension of the former premier's sentence in the case.

On Tuesday, the Lahore High Court bailed Maryam Nawaz Sharif is the Sugar Mill case after establishing that the NAB had failed to prove its case against her and there was no allegation of ill-gotten money and she had declared the income in her papers. Her passport remains with the court on National Accountability Court’s request.

The ‘Azadi’ March caravan, which set off from Sindh on October 27, left Punjab’s city Lahore on October 30 and culminated its journey October 31 in Islamabad.

Opposition leaders delivered fiery speeches against the PTI government on Friday, giving the prime minister a 48-hour ultimatum to resign. The deadline was later extended after the JUI-F chief said the opposition’s Rahbar Committee will decide after talks with the government negotiating committee.

Maulana Fazl addressed the Azadi March participants, saying that the opposition leaders do not want NRO from Imran Khan, instead they will not give it to him.

He said that PM Imran himself hid the money laundering by his sister through an amnesty scheme and now he speaks of granting NRO concessions.

The opposition-led Rahbar Committee held a press conference today after a meeting. Addressing media, Akram Durrani said that all the political parties have unanimously decided to increase pressure on the government.

“The Azadi March will take a new direction after two days,” said Durrani, adding that the committee is mulling over three recommendations.

He further said that the workers are determined, even willing to stay up to three months.

Pakistan People’s Party leader Farhatullah Babar said that the opposition is putting the government under pressure, calling it ‘the first phase’.

Nimrita Kumari
The final postmortem report of Nimrita Kumari, issued by Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Wednesday, revealed the the deceased was sexually abused before being murdered.

Nimrita’s death was determined to be caused by suffocation as asphyxial signs caused by a ligature on the neck were seen during the autopsy, according to Dr Amrita, the CMCH's Woman Medico-Legal Officer.

As per the autopsy report, "The ligature marks also tally with the information. Such signs are produced either in strangulation or hanging and are to be ascertained through circumstantial evidence as corroborative at the crime scene by state investigation authorities."

A DNA test confirmed the presence of male DNA profile indicated from semen residue on the deceased’s clothes whereas a vaginal swab tested positive for a forced sexual act.

At least three PSL franchises to have new faces as head coach this season

Dean Jones
At least three Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises are expected to have new head coaches ahead of the next season, set to be held exclusively in Pakistan.

While Islamabad United already announced to release Dean Jones, it was expected that two other franchises — Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans — would also have new faces in their coaching staff.

In a statement Wednesday, Islamabad United said the franchise and the former Australian cricketer Dean Jones have agreed to part ways prior to the upcoming edition of the PSL.

“In preparation for the whole tournament, moving to Pakistan and the natural progression of different members of the team, we have been evolving our plans and strategies over the past year,” Islamabad United owner Ali Naqvi said.

Sources believe that Misbah ul Haq will be announced as the new head coach of Islamabad United. However, the franchise's management stated that they would announce all details closer to the draft for PSL 5.

The players’ draft of the PSL 5 would be held in the first week of December in Lahore.

Waqar Younis — now the bowling coach of Pakistan’s national cricket team — was also unlikely to remain on the dugout of Islamabad United for the upcoming season of PSL, while Saeed Ajmal and former New Zealand Cricketer Luke Ronchi were set to get coaching roles with the franchise.

Meanwhile, Karachi Kings were also unlikely to retain Mickey Arthur as their head coach. Arthur — who was earlier removed as Pakistan’s head coach by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) — was likely to be replaced by Jones.

Another PSL franchise, Multan Sultans, were in talks with former Zimbabwean cricketer and former England coach Andy Flower. They were previously coached by Johan Botha in the 2019 season and Tom Moody in the 2018.

Nine Mormons slaughtered in Mexico cartel attack

Nine Mormons slaughtered in Mexico cartel attack
At least three women and six children from an American Mormon community in northern Mexico have been killed in an ambush in an area notorious for drug traffickers and bandits, a relative said.

The government deployed the army to fight drug trafficking in 2006, but experts blame the so-called “drug war” for the spiraling violence between fragmented cartels and the military, which has lead to more than 250,000 murders.

Julian Lebaron said his cousin was traveling with her four children to the airport when she was attacked and shot in Rancho de la Mora, an area near the US border.

“It was a massacre,” Lebaron, an activist who has denounced criminal groups in the area, told Formula Radio.

His cousin’s van had been set on fire with the victims inside, he said.

Two other vehicles were found several hours later, containing the bodies of two women and a boy and a girl of about ten years.

At least five other children — one of whom was shot and wounded — managed to escape and walk home, and a girl was reported missing after having run into the woods to hide, Lebaron added.

The Chihuahua state prosecutor, Cesar Augusto Peniche, said the number of victims remains “confused”.

The attack took place between Chihuahua and Sonora states.

Communication with the area — which is mountainous and forested — is also difficult, Peniche said.

When asked who might be responsible, Lebaron said the attack took place in a “war zone”, home to drug cartels and “thugs”.

His family “may have been caught in crossfire or targeted by mistake, we don’t know the cause,” he said, but said that the Mormon community had recently been the target of threats.

The community are descendants of Mormons who fled the US in the nineteenth century after being persecuted for their traditions, including polygamy.

One former member is George Romney, father of 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who was born in 1907 in Colonia Dublan in Chihuahua state, according to an NBC report on Monday.

Many Mormons in Mexico enjoy dual Mexican and American citizenship and — according to Mexican media — the Lebaron family asked for the help of the US embassy.

It is not the first time the family have been targeted. Lebaron’s sibling, Benjamin, founder of a crime-fighting group called SOS Chihuahua, was assassinated in 2009 after he led protests over the kidnapping of their 16-year-old brother.

The Mormons refused to pay the ransom and the young Lebaron was eventually released.

Pakistan vs Australia: Steve Smith hands Babar Azam first loss as T20I captain

Steve Smith hands Babar Azam first loss as T20I captain
Steve Smith's unbeaten 80-run knock helped Australia defeat Pakistan by seven wickets in the second T20I at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Tuesday.

Defending a modest 151-run target, the Pakistani bowlers managed to get rid of two out of three danger men in the former of captain Aaron Finch and David Warner but could not do the same to Smith, who made them pay the price.

His risk-free 51-ball innings quashed Pakistan's flailing hopes of triggering a batting collapse as Australia accomplished a task it never felt they wouldn't: win.

Pakistan innings

Babar Azam won his first toss as the Pakistan captain and had no hesitation in opting to bat first.

He named the same line-up that shared the spoils with the hosts in the rain-marred opening T20I on Sunday.

As expected Azam and Fakhar Zaman opened the batting for Pakistan, whereas Mitchell Starc and Kane Richardson shared the new ball for Australia.

After a quiet opening over, Azam looked to have continued from where he had left on Sunday, smashing back-to-back boundaries off of Richardson's bowling in the second over.

While Azam looked exquisite, Zaman looked wretched again, slicing one straight to mid-off in the fourth over bowled by Pat Cummins. This time he scored a mere two runs and ate up seven balls.

Next man in was Haris Sohail (6 off 9 balls) but he did not stay in the middle for long. The leftie cleared his front leg, attempted and ugly shot and top-edged Richardson who accepted the catch off his own bowling. He had gotten out pretty much the same way in the first T20I.

In came former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed's replacement: Mohammad Rizwaz. Him and Azam had rescued Pakistan in the first T20I and the ask of them was the same again. The two batted cautiously and helped Pakistan complete their 50 in the 9th over.

The duo's 33-run stand was over in the 10th when Rizwan was stumped out by Ashton Agar.

Asif Ali, another frequent failure, walked in and did not last long. He attempted a slog only to find the long one fielder. When he departed in the 11th over, Pakistan were 70-4 and reeling.

Iftikhar Ahmed, who had impressed in the home series against Sri Lanka, walked in and impressed again. When boundaries had dried up, he found a few in the 15th over to put some torque in the innings.

The 36-run partnership was looking good when Azam was run out via a direct hit. He departed but again contributed a 38-ball 50.

But Iftikhar continued to hit whenever he found an opportunity — his innings aided by a dropped catch. He completed his maiden T20I fifty off just 29 balls in the penultimate over of the innings.

In the end, Pakistan finished at 150-6, with Iftikhar's 34-ball 62 the highlight of the innings.

The run chase

Mohammad Irfan and Imad Wasim shared the new ball for Pakistan, whereas the usual pairing of Aaron Finch and David Warner opened the innings for the hosts.

Wasim, usually measured and difficult to hit, looked ordinary in his first over as he conceded four boundaries to Warner.

Amir, usually lethal and dangerous, looked his usual self. He bowled out the dangerous Warner (20 off 11 balls) whose four-match unbeaten run was finally over.

But the thing with Australia is that they do not have a danger man but danger men. Steve Smith walked in.

Smith and Finch were casually taking Australia towards the 50-mark when Irfan bowled an incredible sixth over, giving up just one win and also removing the Aussie captain.

And just as expected, Smith nonchalantly slipped into the anchorman role, with Ben McDermott alongside him.

Imad Wasim trapped McDermott LBW but Australia's grip on the game did not loosen up, thanks to Smith, who brought up his 50 in the 15th over.

With Smith in the middle, Pakistan practically had no chance. The hosts triumphed by seven wickets and nine balls to spare.

Line-ups

Australia: Aaron Finch (capt), David Warner, Steve Smith, Ben McDermott, Ashton Turner, Alex Carey (wk), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa

Pakistan: Babar Azam (capt), Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail, Mohammad Rizwan, Asif Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Wahab Riaz, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Irfan

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F Chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F Chief Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman said on Friday that the Azadi March sit-in is not for 'spectators' but for resolute ones.

The JUI-F chief was addressing the gathering in the federal capital, where he lauded the resilience of the Azadi March participants for bracing rain and cold weather.

Maulana Fazl addressed the participants of the sit-in in evening, saying that further time cannot be given to the government as it can lead to 'further deterioration in the country's situation'.

Fazl said that people could not get justice in Pakistan. "There is no justice in the country. NAB is helpless when it comes to holding the government responsible in Pakistan," he said.

Fazl said that he and the Azadi Marchers had arrived in Islamabad to save the country and that is what they will do.

"If these unqualified people present the next budget, then God forbid, the country will collapse," he said.

At the start of the address, Fazl lauded the workers for bracing rain and cold weather with sheer resilience.

“This gathering is for those who stand firmly behind their stance,” said Fazl to the crowd.

He said that the sit-in is not for 'spectators' but for the resolute ones.

On Tuesday night, a picture of a few Azadi Marchers preparing to go to sleep in the biting cold and rain went viral on social media. Protesters were seen in the picture sleeping on mattresses laid on the ground, with blankets and plastic coverings draped over them to keep away the cold.

Following which, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that he had directed the CDA Chairman to immediately visit the dharna site to assess what relief and assistance can be provided to the dharna participants.

Shortly after the directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan, relief and assistance teams reached the venue of the Azadi March sit-in to give medical assistance to protesters.

Azadi March was initiative Maulana Fazlur Rehman: Qamar Zaman

Pakistan Peoples Party leader Qamar Zaman Kaira
Pakistan Peoples Party leader Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Tuesday that the Azadi March was an initiative of Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

"This entire phase was Maulana's initiative. We participated in it to the extent he invited us to," the PPP leader said during an interview with private TV chanel.

"It was interpreted as if the Peoples Party is half-hearted and it doesn't want them to move," he said. "We repeatedly said that we had not entered into an alliance. This was not an alliance of opposition parties."

Kaira said the opposition parties came together in protest against the government's "wrong measures, wrong polices and wrong ways".

"Every political party is independent and considers which options it has," he said.

Asked about possible resignations by his party's members, the PPP leader said that his party would decide on whether to submit resignations or not.

He was of the view that a protest like this was the only way they had.

Yemen govt, southern separatists sign power-sharing deal

Yemen govt, southern separatists sign power-sharing deal
Yemen's internationally recognised government signed a power-sharing deal with southern separatists on Tuesday, in a Saudi-brokered initiative to end a conflict simmering within the country's civil war.

Unrest in the south, which saw secessionist forces seize control of Yemen's interim capital Aden, distracted the Saudi-led coalition from its battle against Houthi rebels and raised fears the country could fall apart entirely.

“This agreement will open a new period of stability in Yemen. The kingdom of Saudi Arabia stands with you,” Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said at a signing ceremony in Riyadh aired on state television.

The deal will reportedly see the secessionist Southern Transitional Council (STC) handed a number of ministries, and the government return to Aden, according to officials and reports in Saudi media.

The UN special envoy for Yemen, Martin Griffiths, congratulated the two sides on the deal which he said would propel efforts to end the wider civil war that has devastated the country.

“The signing of this agreement is an important step for our collective efforts to advance a peaceful settlement to the conflict in Yemen,” he said in a statement.

“Listening to southern stakeholders is important to the political efforts to achieve peace in the country.” Security Belt Forces — dominated by the STC — in August took control of Aden, which had served as the beleaguered government's base since it was ousted from the capital Sanaa by Iran-backed Huthi rebels in 2014.

The clashes between the separatists and government forces, who for years fought on the same side against the Huthis, had raised fears the country could split apart with disastrous effects.

The warring factions in recent weeks held indirect talks mediated by Saudi Arabia in the kingdom's western city of Jeddah, which culminated in the deal signed in Riyadh.

Both Yemen's President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi and STC leader Aidarous al-Zoubeidi attended the ceremony.

Analysts said the deal prevented the violent disintegration of Yemen but that secessionist sentiment could resurface in the future.

“In the short term, the agreement will allow the coalition to stick together and focus their efforts on fighting the Huthis instead of each other,” said Elisabeth Kendall, senior research fellow at Oxford University.

“In the long term, it simply kicks the can down the road on southern secession. Southern ambitions won't just go away. The question is, can they be temporarily reined in.”

Mistrust abounds

The military coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) intervened in Yemen in 2015 as the Huthi rebels closed in on Aden, prompting Hadi to flee into Saudi exile.

The conflict has since killed tens of thousands of people — most of them civilians — and driven millions more to the brink of famine in what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

The south was an independent state before being forcibly unified in 1990, and the STC has said it wants to regain its lost status.

The separatists have received support and training from the UAE, even though it is a key pillar in the Saudi-led coalition.

Abu Dhabi accuses Yemeni authorities of allowing Islamist elements to gain influence within their ranks.

The mistrust between the allies has posed a headache for regional powerhouse Saudi Arabia, which remains focused on fighting the Huthis who are aligned with Riyadh's archfoe Iran.

Nevertheless, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan tweeted a picture of himself and Prince Mohammed walking hand in hand with Hadi after Tuesday's ceremony.

The Huthis have offered to halt all attacks on Saudi Arabia as part of a wider peace initiative, later repeating their proposal despite continued air strikes from the Saudi-led coalition.

The offer came after the Houthis claimed responsibility for attacks on September 14 against two key Saudi oil installations that temporarily knocked out half of the OPEC giant's production.

Riyadh and Washington, however, blamed Iran for the attacks — a charge denied by Tehran.
