200 families in Surjani Town relocated as rain wreaks havoc

The rains were followed with subsequent power outages across the city
As many as 200 families in Karachi’s Surjani Town were forced to relocate on Saturday as rains continued to wreak havoc in the metropolis.

Residents of Yousaf Goth, Bismah Town, Sector 4-B and other low lying areas in Surjani Town had to relocate due to urban flooding in the area. The residents were moved with the help of Rangers and Edhi workers in trucks and boats to safe locations.

Low-lying areas in the city have been the hardest hit with the fifth spell of rain as nullahs overflowed and flooding in residential areas made life difficult for the people.

In New Karachi’s sector 5-E and the Hyderi Market rainwater flowed from the storm drains which could not be cleaned in due time due to the encroachments entering streets and houses.

The rains were followed with subsequent power outages across the city, with several areas of the metropolis plunged into darkness after nearly 600 K-Electric feeders tripped.

Areas that had experienced power outages included Surjani Town, Orangi Town, North Karachi, New Karachi, Liaquatabad, Jamshed Quarters, FC Area, Khamosh Colony, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Ahsanabad, Shadman Town, Safoora Goth, FB Area, Power House, parts of Clifton, among others.

MET Department Director Abdul Qayyum Bhutto had said the city might receive 100mm on Saturday with some areas receiving heavy or moderate showers.

Bhutto had said that the monsoon spell can last with intermittent rain showers until Wednesday, adding that heavy rains can cause urban flooding once again.

TikTok too challenge Trump executive order banning app

TikTok too challenge Trump
Video-sharing app TikTok has said it plans to file a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s executive order banning the Chinese-owned app.

As tensions soar between the world's two biggest economies, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 6 giving Americans 45 days to stop doing business with TikTok's Chinese parent company ByteDance effectively setting a deadline for a potential pressured sale of the viral video sensation to a US company.

"Even though we strongly disagree with the Administration's concerns, for nearly a year we have sought to engage in good faith to provide a constructive solution. What we encountered instead was a lack of due process as the Administration paid no attention to facts and tried to insert itself into negotiations between private businesses," TikTok said in a statement.

"To ensure that the rule of law is not discarded and that our company and users are treated fairly, we have no choice but to challenge the Executive Order through the judicial system," it said, adding it expects to file its suit next week.

TikTok's kaleidoscopic feeds of short video clips feature everything from hair-dye tutorials to dance routines and jokes about daily life. It has been downloaded 175 million times in the US and more than a billion times around the world.

Trump claims TikTok could be used by China to track the locations of federal employees, build dossiers on people for blackmail, and conduct corporate espionage.

The company has said it has never provided any US user data to the Chinese government, and Beijing has blasted Trump's crackdown as political.

The US measures come ahead of November 3 elections in which Trump, who is behind his rival Joe Biden in the polls, is campaigning hard on an increasingly strident anti-Beijing message.

Trump and China
Trump has increasingly taken a confrontational stance on China, challenging it on trade, military and economic fronts.

Shortly after Trump announced his moves against TikTok in early August, the United States slapped sanctions on Hong Kong´s leader over the Chinese security clampdown after last year´s pro-democracy demonstrations.

Microsoft and Oracle are possible suitors for TikTok's US operations.

Reports have said Oracle whose chairman Larry Ellison has raised millions in campaign funds for Trump — was weighing a bid for TikTok's operations in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The Trump administration has also given ByteDance a 90-day deadline to divest in TikTok before the app is banned in the United States.

The measures move away from the long-promoted American ideal of a global, open internet and could invite other countries to follow suit.

"It´s really an attempt to fragment the internet and the global information society along US and Chinese lines, and shut China out of the information economy," Milton Mueller, a Georgia Tech professor and founder of the Internet Governance Project said previously.

COVID-19 spread: Children aged 12 and over should wear masks, says WHO

Children aged 12 and over should wear masks
The World Health Organisation has recommended that children over the age of 12 should wear face masks like adults in a bid to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Children aged 12 and over should particularly wear a mask when a one-metre distance from others cannot be guaranteed and there is widespread transmission in the area, the WHO and the United Nations Children’s Fund said in a document on the WHO website dated Aug. 21.

Whether children between six and 11 should wear masks depends on a number of factors, including the intensity of transmission in the area, the child’s ability to use the mask, access to masks and adequate adult supervision, the two organisations said.

The potential impact on learning and psycho-social development, and the interactions the child has with people at high risk of developing serious illness, should also play a role.

Children aged five years and under should not be required to wear masks based on the safety and overall interest of the child, the WHO and UNICEF said.

Studies suggest older children potentially play a more active role in transmission of the new coronavirus than younger children, the WHO and UNICEF said, adding more data was needed to better understand the role of children and adolescents in the transmission of the virus, which causes COVID-19.

The WHO first advised people to wear masks in public on June 5 to help reduce the spread of the disease, but had previously not issued specific guidance for children.

More than 23 million people have been reported to be infected by the coronavirus globally since it was first identified in China last year and 798,997 have died, according to a Reuters tally.

NASA predicts asteroid is headed for Earth

The flying space object is 6.5 feet in diameter
An asteroid is projected to come close to Earth later this year and may hit one day before the US presidential election in November, according to NASA data.

The celestial object, known as 2018VP1, is expected to pass near Earth on Nov 2, according to the Center for Near Objects Studies at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The flying space object is 6.5 feet in diameter, according to NASA data, and first identified at the Palomar Observatory in California two years ago.

The space agency says there were three potential impacts “based on 21 observations spanning 12.968 days, with the chance of a direct impact less than 1 per cent.”

The agency has determined the asteroid probably won’t have a deep impact, let alone wipe out the planet.

England's Crawley, Buttler, Anderson heap misery on Pakistan

Anderson then took three wickets as Pakistan crumbled to 24
Zak Crawley and Jos Buttler shared a record partnership and James Anderson grabbed three wickets to put England in total control at the close on the second day of the third and final Test against Pakistan on Saturday.

Crawley, 22, became the third-youngest England player to make a double century and went on to 267 before the hosts declared their first innings on 583 for eight in Southampton.

Anderson then took three wickets as Pakistan crumbled to 24 for three in reply, leaving England in prime position to win the match and clinch the series 2-0.

Crawley and Buttler (152) negotiated the second new ball in the morning session and went on to add 359 runs, surpassing England's previous record fifth-wicket stand of 254 shared by Keith Fletcher and Tony Greig against India in 1973.

Chris Woakes, Dom Bess and Stuart Broad added another 82 runs to help England post their highest total in four years.

Pakistan lost openers Shan Masood and Abid Ali along with Babar Azam in just under 11 overs.

Anderson claimed all three wickets and is only four short of becoming the first pace bowler to reach the milestone of 600 in Tests.

Pakistan need a victory to level the series after England won the opening match in Manchester by three wickets, and the rain-hit second game ended in a draw.

NAB to approach court to bring back Nawaz Sharif

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) will approach an accountability court to declare former prime minister Nawaz Sharif a proclaimed offender in a reference accusing him of receiving luxury vehicles and gifts from Toshakhana.

Sources privy to the development said the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) will file an appeal in accountability court to declare Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif proclaimed offender in Toshakhana case.

The anti-graft body has also decided to inform the IHC that PML-N supremo is absconding. The bureau will file an appeal in Islamabad High Court (IHC) for implementation on Nawaz’s sentence in Al Azizia reference, said NAB sources.

The NAB said that the bail granted to the former premier has become ineffective, and he was apparently an absconder now.

Sources further said that the anti-corruption watchdog will approach the British government through Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), for the deportation of former prime minister.

It is pertinent to mention here that Nawaz Sharif is currently in London for treatment after having been granted bail on medical grounds.

The accountability court of Islamabad had issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Sharif over his failure to attend the trial proceeding in Toshakhana case and had also initiated the process to declare him a proclaimed offender.

Federal Minister for Information Senator Shibli Faraz yesterday said that government will bring back former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to Pakistan.

Shibli Faraz, while addressing a press conference in Islamabad today, said that Nawaz Sharif had departed to London for six months by presenting an excuse for his precarious health conditions, however, he neither undergoes any medical test nor sends his health reports sought by the Punjab government.

Turkey made a historic discovery of gas in the Black Sea: Tayyip Erdogan

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday said Turkey had made a historic discovery of gas in the Black Sea, but would still speed up contentious exploration in the Mediterranean that has pitted it against Greece and the EU.

Turkey hopes the discovery can help wean it off imported energy, including from Russia, which comes at a high cost at a time when the local currency is weakening and the economy is more fragile because of the coronavirus.

Erdogan said the 320-billion-cubic-metre deep sea find was made at a site Turkish vessel Fatih began exploring last month.

He added that he hoped to see the first gas reach Turkish consumers in 2023, the 100th anniversary of the birth of the modern republic.

"Turkey made the biggest discovery of natural gas in its history in the Black Sea," a delighted Erdogan said during a speech in Istanbul's Dolmabahce Palace.

"My Lord has opened the door to unprecedented wealth for us," he enthused.

The Fatih, Turkey's first drilling vessel, is named after Fatih Sultan Mehmet, the Ottoman Sultan who conquered Constantinople — current-day Istanbul — in 1453.

The vessel made the discovery in the Tuna-1 field off the coast of Eregli town in the northern province of Zonguldak after beginning the search on July 20, Erdogan said.

Leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Rana Sanaullah
An anti-narcotics court granted an exemption to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah from appearing in a drug case hearing against him.

The counsel of PML-N leader submitted a plea for exemption from the court appearance owing to the National Assembly session.

The petition said the petitioner can’t attend the court hearing in person because of the ongoing lower house session.

Rana Sanaullah was asked to appear before the anti-narcotics court today for the indictment.

The court summoned the PML-N stalwart to appear in hearing for the indictment in drugs case on September 12.

Rana Sanaullah was arrested last year in July by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) from the Islamabad-Lahore motorway near the Sukheki area.

The ANF claimed that 15 kilograms of drugs were recovered from the PML-N leader’s car. He was released on bail on Dec 26.

His name has been put on the Exit Control List (ECL) in drug recovery case.

The Lahore High Court had granted bail to Rana Sanaullah in drug recovery case in December last year, which was filed against him by the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF).

The court had ordered Sanaullah to submit two surety bonds of Rs one million each for bail.

Thirteen of 15-member U.N. Security Council oppose U.S. push for Iran sanctions

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
The United States was further isolated on Friday over its bid to reimpose international sanctions on Iran with 13 countries on the 15-member U.N. Security Council expressing their opposition, arguing that Washington’s move is void given it is using a process agreed under a nuclear deal that it quit two years ago.

In the 24 hours since U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he triggered a 30-day countdown to a return of U.N. sanctions on Iran, including an arms embargo, long-time allies Britain, France, Germany and Belgium as well as China, Russia, Vietnam, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, South Africa, Indonesia, Estonia and Tunisia have already written letters in opposition, seen by Reuters.

The United States has accused Iran of breaching a 2015 deal with world powers that aimed to stop Tehran developing nuclear weapons in return for sanctions relief. But President Donald Trump described it as the “worst deal ever” and quit in 2018.

Diplomats said Russia, China and many other countries are unlikely to reimpose the sanctions on Iran. Pompeo again warned Russia and China against that on Friday, threatening U.S. action if they refuse to reimpose the U.N. measures on Iran.

The United States acted on Thursday after the Security Council resoundingly rejected its bid last week to extend an arms embargo on Iran beyond its expiration in October. Only the Dominican Republic joined Washington in voting yes.

Dominican Republic has not yet written to the council to state its position on the sanctions snapback push.

Under the process Washington says it has triggered, it appears all U.N. sanctions should be reimposed at midnight GMT (8 p.m New York time) on Sept. 19 - just days before Trump is due to address world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly, the annual meeting that will be largely virtual because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Russian opposition leader Navalny in coma, allegedly poisoned by toxic tea

Russian opposition leader Navalny
Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, one of Vladimir Putin’s fiercest critics, lay in a coma Friday at a Siberian hospital, the victim of what his allies said appeared to be a poisoning engineered by the Kremlin.

Navalny’s organisation was scrambling to make arrangements to transfer him to Germany for treatment; a German group said it was ready to send a plane for him and that a noted hospital in Berlin was ready to treat him.

The 44-year-old Navalny fell ill on a flight back to Moscow from the Siberian city of Tomsk on Thursday and was taken to a hospital after the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk, Navalny’s spokeswoman, Kira Yarmysh, said on Twitter.

She told the Echo Moskvy radio station that he must have consumed poison in tea he drank at an airport cafe before boarding the plane early Thursday. During the flight, Navalny started sweating and asked her to talk to him so that he could “focus on the sound of a voice.” He then went to the bathroom and lost consciousness, and has been in a coma and on a ventilator in grave condition ever since.

In a video statement released early Friday in Omsk, Yarmysh said Navalny remained in critical condition and she called on the hospital’s leadership “not to obstruct us from providing all necessary documents for his transfer.” It was not clear what the possible obstructions could be.

Other opposition figures were quick to suggest Kremlin involvement.

“We are sure that the only people that have the capability to target Navalny or myself are Russian security services with definite clearance from Russia’s political leadership,” Pyotr Verzilov, a member of the protest group Pussy Riot who ended up in intensive care after suspected poisoning in 2018, told The Associated Press. “We believe that Putin definitely is a person who gives that go-ahead in this situation.”

Jaka Bizilj of the German organisation Cinema For Peace, which arranged for Verzilov’s treatment in Germany, said that at Verzilov’s request “we will send at midnight an air ambulance with medical equipment and specialists with which Navalny can be brought to Germany.”

Omsk is about 4,200 kilometers (2,500 miles) east of Berlin, roughly a six-hour flight.

Doctors at Omsk Ambulance Hospital No. 1, where the politician was being treated, remained tight-lipped about his diagnosis saying only that they were considering a variety of theories, including poisoning. Local health officials said they found no indication that Navalny had suffered from a heart attack, stroke or the coronavirus.

Authorities initially refused to let Navalny’s wife, Yulia, see her husband and have rejected requests for documentation that would allow him to be transferred to a European hospital for treatment, Yarmysh said.

Verzilov, who was flown to Berlin for treatment in 2018, said hospitals in Omsk or Moscow would not be able to treat Navalny properly and expressed concern about possible pressure from security services that doctors could be under in Russia.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was necessary to wait for test results showing what caused Navalny’s condition, adding the authorities would consider a request to allow Navalny to leave Russia, which has not fully opened its borders after a coronavirus lockdown, for treatment.

State news agency Tass reported that police were not considering deliberate poisoning, a statement the politician’s allies dismissed.

Reports about the alleged poisoning made waves in the West.

French President Emmanuel Macron said France was ready to offer Navalny and his family “all necessary assistance ... in terms of health care, asylum, protection” and insisted on the need to clarify what happened.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking at a joint news conference with Macron, echoed that sentiment. “What is very important is that it will be clarified very urgently how it could come to the situation.”

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and the United Nations also expressed concern over what happened to Navalny, and Amnesty International demanded a full and thorough investigation.

The widow of Alexander Litvinenko, the Russian agent who was killed in London by radioactive poisoning in 2006, voiced concern that Navalny’s enemies within Russia may have decided that it’s time to use a “new tactic”.

“Maybe they decided ... not to stop him just with an arrest but to stop him with poison. It looks like a new tactic against Navalny,” Marina Litvinenko told The Associated Press from Sicily, Italy.

Like many other opposition politicians in Russia, Navalny has been frequently detained by law enforcement and harassed by pro-Kremlin groups. In 2017, he was attacked by several men who threw antiseptic in his face, damaging an eye.

Last year, Navalny was rushed to a hospital from prison, where he was serving a sentence following an administrative arrest, with what his team said was suspected poisoning. Doctors said he had a severe allergic attack and discharged him back to prison the following day.

Navalny’s Foundation for Fighting Corruption has been exposing graft among government officials, including some at the highest level. Last month, he had to shut the foundation after a financially devastating lawsuit from Yevgeny Prigozhin, a businessman with close ties to the Kremlin.

Belarus’ authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko accused Navalny last week of organising unprecedented mass protests against his re-election that have rocked Russia’s ex-Soviet neighbor since August 9. He did not, however, provide any evidence and that claim was one of many blaming foreign forces for the unrest.

The most prominent member of Russia’s opposition, Navalny campaigned to challenge Putin in the 2018 presidential election, but was barred from running.

He set up campaign offices across Russia and has been promoting opposition candidates in regional elections, challenging members of Russia’s ruling party, United Russia. One of his associates in Khabarovsk, a city in Russia’s Far East that has been engulfed in mass protests against the arrest of the region’s governor, was detained last week after calling for a strike at a rally.

In the interview with Echo Moskvy, Yarmysh said she believed the suspected poisoning was connected to this year’s regional election campaign.

Commentators say Navalny has become increasingly dangerous for the Kremlin as Putin’s approval rating has plummeted to a record low of around 60 per cent amid the coronavirus pandemic and growing public frustration with the declining economy.

Navalny’s ability to mobilise voters against pro-Kremlin candidates poses a particular challenge ahead of the 2021 parliamentary elections, said Abbas Gallyamov, a former Kremlin speechwriter-turned-political-analyst.

“The Duma elections are particularly important for the Kremlin,” as the new Duma will be operating in 2024, when Putin’s current presidential term expires and he may announce running for re-election, Gallyamov told the AP.

“That’s why controlling the next State Duma is crucially important for the Kremlin. Navalny really makes it harder for the Kremlin to establish that control,” Gallyamov added.

At the same time Navalny, who rose to prominence by exposing corruption all over Russia, could have other enemies, Gallyamov said, and may have been targeted by people featured in one of his investigations, if he was indeed deliberately poisoned.

Navalny is not the first opposition figure to come down with a mysterious poisoning.

Verzilov, who spent a month in a hospital recovering from his suspected 2018 poisoning, told the AP that Navalny’s initial symptoms — loss of coordination, pain, fainting — were very similar to his.

Opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza was hospitalised with poisoning symptoms twice — in 2015 and 2017. Prominent journalist Anna Politkovskaya was also reportedly poisoned in 2004 — two years before being murdered.

On Thursday evening, activists in several Russian cities held protests in support of Navalny. In St. Petersburg, a crowd of about 100 people gathered in the city center, and several supporters were detained.

“It was actually in the interests of the authorities to safeguard him,” Yegor Batozhok, 34, a municipal deputy in St. Petersburg, told the AP. “But for some reason a number of those who criticise the authorities get poisoned.”

Turkey's Erdogan converts another former church into mosque

Turkey's Erdogan converts another former church into mosque
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday ordered another ancient Orthodox church, that became a mosque and then a popular Istanbul museum, to be turned back into a mosque.

The decision to transform the Kariye Museum into a mosque came just a month after a similarly controversial conversion for the Unesco World Heritage-recognised Hagia Sophia.

Both changes reflect Erdogan's apparent efforts to galvanise his more conservative and nationalist supporters at a time when Turkey is suffering a new spell of inflation and economic uncertainty caused by the coronavirus.

But they have added to Turkey's tensions with Greece and its Orthodox Church.

The Greek foreign ministry called the decision “yet another provocation against religious persons everywhere” by the Turkish government.

'Steeped in history'

The 1,000-year-old building's history closely mirrors that of the Hagia Sophia — its bigger neighbour on the historic western bank of the Golden Horn estuary on the European side of Istanbul.

The Holy Saviour in Chora was a medieval Byzantine church decorated with 14th century frescoes of the Last Judgement that remain treasured in the Christian world.

It was originally converted into the Kariye Mosque half a century after the 1453 conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks.

It became the Kariye Museum after World War II as Turkey pushed ahead with the creation of a more secular new republic out of the ashes of the Ottoman Empire.

A group of American art historians then helped restore the original church's mosaics and opened them up for public display in 1958.

But Erdogan is placing an ever greater political emphasis on the battles that resulted in the defeat of Byzantium by the Ottomans.

Turkey's top administrative court approved the museum's conversion into a mosque in November.

“It's a place steeped in history which holds a lot of symbolism for a lot of different people,” said 48-year-old French tourist Frederic Sicard outside the building.

“For me, [these conversions] are a little difficult to understand and to follow. But we would visit if it were a mosque. We might just have to arrange visits around prayer times.”

'Tolerance'

The sandy-coloured structure visible today replaced one created as part of a monastery in the fourth century when Constantinople was the new capital of the Roman Empire.

It features a minaret in one corner and small cascading domes similar to those of other grand mosques whose calls to prayer echo over Istanbul.

But inside it is filled with magnificent frescoes and mosaics that represent some of the finest examples of Byzantine art in the Christian world.

Turkey's tumultuous efforts to reconcile these two histories form the underpinnings of the country's contemporary politics and social life.

Opposition HDP party lawmaker Garo Paylan called the transformation “a shame for our country”.

“One of the symbols of our country's deep, multicultural identity and multi-religious history has been sacrificed,” he said in a tweet.

Yet some locals fully supported the change.

“There are dozens, hundreds of churches, synagogues in Istanbul and only a few of them have been opened to prayer as mosques,” said Yucel Sahin as he strolled by the building after the morning rain.

“There is a lot of tolerance in our culture.“

Veteran actress Atiqa Odho acquitted in liquor bottles case

Veteran actress Atiqa Odho
Seasoned Pakistani actress Atiqa Odho on Friday was acquitted in a liquor bottles case after nine years, according to media reports.

According to the reports, a civil court in Rawalpindi heard the case of liquor possession against Odho. During the hearing, the court acquitted the actress after nine years, two months, and 14 days.

Judge Yasir Chaudhry ruled on the basis of merit, remarking that there was no evidence against the actress; therefore, she was acquitted.

It is to be noted that Odho was accused of carrying two bottles of liquor in her bag while travelling from Islamabad to Karachi. The former chief justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Chaudhry, had taken a suo motu notice, following which a case had been registered against Odho at the Airport police station on June 7, 2011.

The course of the case saw 210 appearances, while 16 judges were changed.

In a statement following the court's verdict, Odho said justice was eventually served, albeit belatedly.

Senator Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo laid to rest in native town of Balochistan

Senator Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo
Senator Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo, who passed away a day earlier after a prolonged battle with lung cancer, was laid to rest in his native town of Naal in Balochistan's Khuzdar district on Friday evening.

Earlier in the day parliamentarians paid glowing tributes to the late National Party chairman.

PML-N MNA Khawaja Asif recalled the principled politics of Mir Hasil Bizenjo, telling the Speaker to obtain the lower house's consent to postpone the session in light of the politician's passing.

PML-N's Senator Mushahidullah Khan said that those people who do not stray from their principles never die but always remain alive in the hearts of the people.

"It is normally very difficult for someone whose father is such a towering personality to carve out his own legacy," he said, adding that despite that Hasil Bizenjo had managed to make a name for himself in politics.

He said that the Bizenjo family had always spoken the truth and never thought about the price they would have to pay. "They did keep paying a price all their lives for telling the truth," he said.

"Did you ever see hatred in his eyes for anyone? He was merciful and loving towards everyone," said Mushahidullah. "Where do we find someone like Hasil?"

PPP leader Sherry Rehman said that Bizenjo lived according to his terms just like he said he would. "People like me, women, were always provided encouragement and support by Bizenjo," she said. "He told me to remain steadfast and not listen to people who thought I did not belong in mainstream politics," added the PPP senator.

Rehman said that Bizenjo was like a ray of light at a time of darkness in Pakistani politics.

PTM MNA Moshin Dawar said it was very difficult to fill the void left by Bizenjo's death. "I think this session [of the National Assembly] should be postponed to honour his memory," he said, describing it as a "huge loss" for the country.

"The lot of politicians that he belonged to are decreasing day by day in Pakistan," he said.

PTI MNA Ramesh Kumar said that he had known the late politician for the past 20-22 years as a friend. "Ever since I stepped into politics, I was his friend," he said. "Even till this day, I remember the things that he talked about with me."

Kumar paid tribute to Bizenjo, stating that those who did good deeds, their names used to remain alive long after they were gone.

Senator Sarfaraz Bugti said that the entire country was in mourning over such a huge loss and that Balochistan had been deprived of a great leader.

"I was in very close contact with him as home minister. Where he was in favour of dialogue, he was also a believer in establishment of the writ of the state," added Bugti.

The Balochistan home minister said that Bizenjo continued his great legacy. "The more we pay tribute to him, the less it is," he added.

A brief overview of the veteran politician's career

Born in 1958 into a family that played a crucial role in Balochistan’s political landscape, Sen Bizenjo entered politics when he joined the Pakistan National Party (PNP). His father, Mir Ghous Baksh Bizenjo, was once the province's governor and struggled for the rights of the Baloch people.

The senator, throughout his political career, spoke up for the Baloch people's rights but categorically opposed armed resistance and militancy, choosing peaceful ways instead.

He also spoke in favour of a quick repatriation of the Afghan refugees, given that the situation in their home country has stabilised considerably.

A respected figure in Pakistani politics, he was elected a Member of National Assembly (MNA) twice in the general elections of 1990 and 1997.

He founded the Balochistan National Democratic Party (BNDP), which eventually merged with the Balochistan National Movement (BNM) in 2003, becoming the National Party (NP).

Interestingly, although his party boycotted the 2008 general elections in protest over the Balochistan situation, he was elected a senator in 2009.

Bizenjo became NP's president in 2014 after the party came into the national spotlight with the PML-N's help. His party faced considerable competition from the BAP, ANP, and the PPP.

The senator was again elected on the position in the 2013 general elections, with his party bagging 11 seats in the provincial assembly and one seat in the National Assembly.

He took office as the federal minister for ports and shipping on May 20, 2016, with then-president Mamnoon Hussain administering the oath.

Subsequently, during caretaker prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi's tenure, he served as Federal Minister of Maritime Affairs, from August 2017 to May 2018. He did not contest the 2018 general elections.

Back in July 2019, when a no-confidence resolution was submitted against Senate Chairperson Sadiq Sanjrani, nine political parties of the Opposition-led Rahbar Committee had named Bizenjo as the joint candidate for the post.

Govt exempts sugar import from taxes to bring down the price

FBR has issued a notification on the import of sugar
The Federal Board of Revenue has exempted the import of 300,000 tonnes of sugar from sales and income taxes to bring down the price of sweetener in the country.

FBR has issued a notification granting the exemption on the import of sugar by a private firm.

The notification came following the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet’s approval to import 300,000 tonnes of white sugar to arrest the skyrocketing price of the commodity.

“The ECC considered a proposal of the Ministry of Industries and Production for the import of refined sugar by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan to maintain buffer stocks, and allowed import of up to 300,000 tons of white sugar,” a statement issued by the finance ministry had read.

A three-member committee comprising industries and production secretary, commerce secretary and finance secretary was tasked to decide the mode of procurement of sweetener.

On July 15, in order to ensure the availability of wheat and flour in the country throughout the year at affordable prices, the Economic Coordination Committee had directed the Ministry of National Food Security and Research to accelerate efforts for wheat imports.

The ECC directed the food ministry to hold meetings with the major importers of wheat at the earliest and come up with proposals.

The food ministry briefed the ECC that combined together the Provincial governments and PASSCO have already achieved 79% of their procurement targets while more than 120 importers have so far shown interest to import wheat in the country.

England lost a wicket at start

England lost a wicket at start
England captain Joe Root opted to bat after winning the toss in the third and final Test against Pakistan at Southampton on Friday as the hosts added Jofra Archer back to their side.

England, 1-0 up in the series after a three-wicket win in the first Test at Old Trafford was followed by a weather-affected draw at Southampton, recalled fast bowler Archer in place of left-arm seamer Sam Curran.

Pakistan, looking to avoid their first series defeat against England in 10 years, were unchanged.

This match marked the last of six scheduled Tests in the English season, which have all been played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus outbreak, with England defeating the West Indies 2-1 last month.

England are now set to play all of their planned 18 internationals, across all formats this season, despite COVID-19.

Before the toss, England paceman Stuart Broad received a framed silver stump to commemorate taking 500 Test wickets, a feat he achieved in the preceding series against the West Indies, from outgoing England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Colin Graves.

Meanwhile Graves received a framed signed shirt from the England squad to mark the end of his five-year term as chairman.

England also announced that Surrey wicketkeeper Ben Foakes and Sussex fast bowler Ollie Robinson had been released from the Test squad to play for their respective counties in first-class Bob Willis Trophy matches on Saturday.

The England team will wear black armbands on Friday as a mark of respect to uncapped squad member Dan Lawrence after the Essex batsman's mother died earlier this month.

Final decision to reopen schools on Sept 7: Shafqat Mahmood

final decision to reopen schools
Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said on Friday a final decision to reopen schools that were closed in March to prevent the spread of coronavirus would be taken at an interprovincial education ministers’ conference on Sept 7.

Speaking at a press conference, he said the Ministry of Health will devise standard operating procedures for educational institutions to follow to prevent the spread of the virus.

Schools will reopen from Sept 15 given that the coronavirus situation improves, he added.

Lamenting that the pandemic took a heavy toll on the education sector, Shafqat Mahmood said he mobilised the forum of the interprovincial education ministers’ conference to deliberate issues related to education.

According to a Gallup survey, he said, seven to eight million children have been getting education through the Telechool, an educational television channel, launched by the prime minister in April to make up for academic losses suffered by students due to closure of education institutes.

Highlighting his ministry’s performance in two years of the PTI government, he said a uniform curriculum is being brought in to fulfill the promise the party had made in its manifesto to weed out educational inequalities in the country.

This has never happened in the 72-year history of Pakistan, he claimed, adding all schools will have a uniform curriculum from April 2020. He said religious seminaries will also teach this curriculum to enable children studying there to join various fields.

Red Clover: benefits, uses, and side effects

red clover benefits
Red clover is a wild flowering plant belonging to the same family as peas and beans.

It’s widely used in traditional medicine as a remedy for menopause symptoms, asthma, whooping cough, arthritis, and even cancer.

However, health experts are wary of its purported benefits due to a lack of scientific evidence.

This article reviews red clover, its potential benefits, downsides, and uses.

What is red clover?

Red clover is a dark-pink herbaceous plant originating from Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Plus, it’s now popular throughout South America as a fodder crop to improve soil quality.

The flowering portion of red clover is used decoratively as an edible garnish or extract, and it can be extracted into essential oils.

Finally, it’s widely used as a traditional medicine to treat osteoporosis, heart disease, arthritis, skin disorders, cancer, respiratory problems like asthma, and women’s health issues, such as menstrual and menopausal symptoms.

However, little research supports these uses.

SUMMARY

Red clover is a dark-pink flowering plant that’s used in traditional medicine to treat menopause symptoms, asthma, heart disease, skin disorders, and even cancer.

Potential benefits

Despite limited scientific evidence, red clover is used to treat a variety of conditions.

Bone health

Osteoporosis is a condition in which your bones exhibit low bone mineral density and have become weak.

As a woman reaches menopause, a decline in reproductive hormones namely estrogen — can lead to increased bone turnover and a decrease in BMD.

Red clover contains isoflavones, which are a type of phytoestrogen a plant compound that can weakly mimic estrogen in the body. Some research has shown a connection between isoflavone intake and a decrease in osteoporosis risk.

A 2015 study in 60 premenopausal women found that taking 5 ounces of red clover extract containing 37 mg of isoflavones daily for 12 weeks led to less BMD loss in the lumbar spine and neck, compared with the placebo group.

Older studies have also shown improvements in BMD after taking red clover extract.

However, a 2015 study in 147 postmenopausal women found that taking 50 mg of red clover daily for 1 year resulted in no improvements in BMD, compared with the placebo group.

Likewise, other studies have failed to find that red clover can help treat BMD.

Due to the large number of conflicting studies, more research is needed.

Menopausal symptoms

Red clover’s high isoflavone content is believed to help lower menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats.

Two review studies found that 40–80 mg of red clover per day may help alleviate hot flashes in women with severe symptoms by 30–50%. Still, many studies were funded by supplement companies, which may lead to bias.

Another study observed a 73% decrease in hot flashes within 3 months after taking a supplement containing numerous herbs, including red clover. Yet, due to the large number of ingredients, it’s unknown whether red clover played a role in these improvements.

Red clover has also shown mild improvements in other menopausal symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, and vaginal dryness.

Yet, numerous studies have shown no improvements in menopausal symptoms after taking red clover, compared with a placebo.

Currently, there’s no clear evidence that supplementing with red clover will improve menopause symptoms. Higher quality, third-party research is needed.

Skin and hair health

Red clover extract has been used in traditional medicine to promote skin and hair health.

In a randomized study in 109 postmenopausal women, participants reported significant improvements in hair and skin texture, appearance, and overall quality after taking 80 mg of red clover extract for 90 days.

Another study in 30 men showed a 13% increase in the hair growth cycleand a 29% decrease in the hair loss cycle when a 5% red clover extract was applied to the scalp for 4 months, compared with the placebo group.

Though promising, more research is needed.

Heart health

Some preliminary research has shown red clover may improve heart health in postmenopausal women.

One 2015 study in 147 postmenopausal women indicated a 12% decrease in LDL cholesterol after taking 50 mg of red clover daily for 1 year.

One review of studies in postmenopausal women taking red clover for 4–12 months showed a significant increase in HDL cholesterol and a decrease in total and LDL cholesterol.

However, a 2020 review found red clover did not reduce LDL cholesterol or increase HDL cholesterol.

Despite some promising results, the authors argued that many studies were small in sample size and lacked proper blinding. Therefore, higher quality research is needed.

Moreover, these studies were performed in older, menopausal women. Thus, it’s unknown whether these effects apply to the general population.

Other claims

Many proponents of red clover claim it can help with weight loss, cancer, asthma, whooping cough, arthritis, and other conditions.

However, limited evidence shows that red clover helps with any of these illnesses.

Downsides and side effects

Red clover is generally recognized as safe by the Food and Drug Administration, and most studies have found it to be well tolerated. Nevertheless, you should be aware of its side effects, drug interactions, and risks for certain populations.

Side effects

Though rare, potential side effects include vaginal spotting, prolonged menstruation, skin irritation, nausea, and headache. Additionally, there have been a few case reports of rare but dangerous side effects of red clover.

A 2007 report noted a 53-year-old woman had a subarachnoid hemorrhage a type of stroke after taking a supplement containing 250 mg of red clover, as well as eight other herbs, to treat hot flashes. That said, the hemorrhage could not be directly linked to red clover.

A 52-year-old woman reported severe stomach pain and vomiting after taking 430 mg of red clover for 3 days. The doctors believe red clover interfered with a psoriasis medication known as methotrexate. After stopping the red clover, she made a full recovery.

At-risk populations

Those with hormone-sensitive conditions, such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, or endometriosis, should speak to their healthcare provider before taking red clover due to its estrogenic activity.

Still, a 3-year, double-blind study found taking 40 mg of red clover daily to be safe for women with a family history of breast cancer. Compared with the placebo group, there was not an increased risk of breast cancer, endometrial thickness, or hormonal changes.

Despite this study, it’s important to speak with your healthcare provider before taking red clover to ensure that it’s safe and right for you.

Additionally, no safety data on red clover among children or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding is available. Therefore, it should be avoided.

Finally, red clover may slow blood clotting and should be avoided by those with bleeding disorders. Further, always be sure to tell your healthcare provider about any medications or herbal remedies you’re taking if you’re going to have surgery.

Drug interactions

Many natural herbs can interfere with the effectiveness of medications.

In particular, red clover may interact with oral contraceptives, methotrexate, hormone replacement therapy medications, tamoxifen, blood thinners like aspirin or Plavix, among others.

A recent study in 88 women taking the breast cancer medication tamoxifen found red clover did not result in any drug interactions or serious side effects, suggesting it does not interfere with anti-estrogen medications.

Despite this, great caution should be used when taking red clover and tamoxifen until there’s more clinical safety data available.

Due to the wide range of potential drug interactions with red clover and limited data on the subject, always speak with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplements.

Uses and dosage

Red clover is usually found as a supplement or tea using dried flower tops. They’re also available in tinctures and extracts. You can buy them in most health food stores or online.

Most red clover supplements are found in 40–80-mg doses based on clinical research and safety data. Therefore, be sure to follow the recommended dose on the package.

To make red clover tea, add 4 grams of dried flower tops to 1 cup of boiling water and steep for 5–10 minutes. Due to reports of side effects with 5 cups per day, it’s best to limit your daily intake to 1–3 cups.

Though many people enjoy red clover tea, no data shows it has the same potential health effects as concentrated forms of red clover, such as supplements and extracts.

No one understands depth of Pakistan's ties with Saudi Arabia: FM Qureshi

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Friday categorically rejected speculation that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia's ties had deteriorated, adding that both countries were each others' "support and necessity".

"Pakistan and Saudi Arabia's ties are and were always better," said the foreign minister, speaking to private new channel. "I think no one understands the depth of our relations with each other. We are each others' necessity and support," he added.

He pointed towards Saudi Arabia's stance on the issue of Israel, adding that the kingdom had not strayed from its historic stance on the issue and that Pakistan held the same view.

FM Qureshi said that Gen Bajwa recently visited Riyadh where he held important meetings. He expressed the desire for future meetings to be held with Saudi Arabia on important issues, hoping that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia both fulfill the targets and expectations they had of each other.

Kashmir important for both China and Pakistan

The foreign minister spoke about his visit to China, stating that lots of developments had taken place over the past one year that needed to be discussed between the two countries.

"Pakistan, with the help of China, raised the issue of occupied Kashmir three times at the UN Security Council in one year," he said. "China had a standoff with India as well on occupied Kashmir, which has not ended. Hence, you can see that Kashmir is important for both countries," he added.

The minister said that Pakistan and China will also discuss the evolving situation in Afghanistan, as both the government and Taliban move closer towards a political settlement after the exchange of prisoners there.

FM Qureshi revealed that before the trip, he held detailed discussions with PM Imran and Gen Bajwa. He said that people from the foreign office and those representing the GHQ were also accompanying him on the trip.

He said that CPEC will also come under discussion during his visit and both countries have to discuss the time frame of certain schemes part of the project, which included Gwadar, and also deliberate on its targets.

FM Qureshi arrives in China

Qureshi Thursday arrived in southern China’s Hainan province to attend the second meeting of the China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue. He will lead the Pakistani side while the Chinese side will be led by China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson said the visit would help the two countries enhance strategic mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation and strengthen close coordination on international and regional affairs.

“This dialogue mechanism is a platform for the two sides to coordinate exchanges and cooperation in various fields, make policy suggestions on the development of bilateral ties and enhance coordination and co-communication on the international and regional issues,” the spokesperson said.

The first dialogue was held in Beijing last year on March 19, which led to many consensuses and played an important role in the development of bilateral relations.

Azhar believes he can regain form as Pakistan take on England in 3rd Test

Pakistan cricket team captain Azhar Ali believes he can regain form and end his poor form in the series.

As the men in green take on England today at Southampton, facing a series defeat against the hosts for the first time in 10 years.

The tourists are 1-0 down in a three-match campaign after a three-wicket defeat in the first Test at Old Trafford, a match where Pakistan were on top until the closing stages, was followed by a draw in a second Test at Southampton where neither side had a chance of victory in a match blighted by bad weather.

Azhar has managed scores of 0, 18 and 20 in the series so far, a poor return for a specialist batsman. But he believes he is not far off from a significant innings.

"I was feeling really confident about myself in the two hours or so I spent at the crease in my previous innings (20) and my balance was good as well," he said.

"It is my responsibility to make sure that I score runs."

There have been concerns that, as happened to the West Indies' fast bowlers during their 2-1 defeat by England in a preceding behind closed door series that marked international cricket's return from lockdown, Pakistan's quicks would be worn out by three back-to-back Tests.

´Exciting fast bowlers´

But the lack of action in the second match — Pakistan had bowled just 43.1 overs in England's first innings when a draw was agreed — should mean a first-choice pace attack of Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Abbas and Naseem Shah are all fit and firing for Friday´s finale.

"We are lucky enough to have these exciting fast bowlers, although they are young. Naseem is nearly 18 and Shaheen is just 20," said Azhar.

"They are bowling really well, putting the opposition under pressure and we are backing them because you can't just sit outside and gain experience, you have to play."

Meanwhile England face another selection dilemma.

There will be a strong temptation to stick with the tried and tested pace trio of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes, so effective in English conditions.

But with English cricket also having an eye on the 2021/22 Ashes tour of Australia, team management would like express fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Mark Wood to have more Test-match game time before they head 'Down Under'.

"It´s a difficult balance to get," admitted England coach Chris Silver wood.

England also have the option to drop spinner Dom Bess and play an extra seamer with all-rounder Ben Stokes sitting out the last two matches of the series to be with his ill father in New Zealand.

Joe Root, the England captain, said whoever was selected, would do their utmost to ensure his side finished their Test-match season on a high.

"Credit to both touring teams for coming over and giving us that opportunity to play, and to both boards, it´s been amazing to be a part of this experience," he said.

"I fully expect everyone to give everything over the next five days and make sure we give ourselves the best chance of finishing the series 2-0."

The frustrating bad light delays in the second Test, even when the floodlights were on full beam, have led to a change in playing conditions that will allow match referee Chris Broad to bring the start of time forward by half-an-hour to 10:30 am (0930 GMT) should any play be lost during the game.

Root, with both teams based in onsite hotels and no spectators to worry about in a series being played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus, welcomed the alteration by saying: "It seems a sensible way of doing it.

"For the environment we find ourselves in and the times that we´re in as well, it seems a really good way of maximising the hours of play.

"I think this will enable us to play a little bit more cricket."

Iran says it detained a UAE ship and its crew

Iran says it detained a UAE ship and its crew
Iran seized a United Arab Emirates-registered ship violating its territorial waters this week, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday, adding that UAE coastguards killed two Iranian fishermen on the same day.

Tensions have risen between the two countries, which face each other across the Gulf, since last week’s agreement between the Gulf state and Tehran’s arch-foe Israel to normalise ties.

Iranian state television quoted a ministry statement as saying that the Emirati ship was seized by Iran’s coastguards and its crew were detained due to illegal traffic in Iranian waters.

It added that on the same day, UAE guards shot dead two Iranian fishermen and seized a boat. It said the UAE has apologised for the incident.

The UAE Foreign Ministry declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

The Iranian statement said Iran summoned the UAE charge d’affaires in Tehran after the incident to demand the release of the detained boat and the fishermen.

“As a result of Iran’s efforts, the UAE authorities ... in a note on Wednesday, expressed their deep regret over the incident and announced their readiness to compensate for all the damage caused,” it said.

The Iranian boat and its crew have been released, the statement said, while the legal process of transferring the bodies of the dead is underway.

UAE state news agency WAM reported on Monday that the state’s coastguards had tried to stop eight fishing boats which violated its territorial waters northwest of Sir Bu Nu’Ayr island. It did not mention any casualties or seizures of a boat.

Although incidents regarding fishing boats are frequent between Iran and its Gulf Arab neighbours, Iran warned of any aggression against its interests and citizens”, saying in the statement, “Tehran will take all necessary measures to protect its vessels and citizens in the Persian Gulf”.

Israel martyred Palestinian amid tensions in West Bank, Gaza over UAE peace deal

Israel martyred Palestinian amid tensions in West Bank
Israeli soldiers have shot dead a Palestinian man near the West Bank city of Ramallah as tensions mount in the Palestinian territories over a recent normalization deal between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Tel Aviv regime.

Israeli media reported on Thursday that the regime forces fired at three Palestinians, who were burning tires in the village Deir Abu Masha'al, west of Ramallah.

One of the Palestinians was hit in his arm and died at the scene, but the two others fled the scene, the reports said.

The Israeli military claimed that the Palestinians were preparing to hurl Molotov cocktails at cars.

Tensions has been running high in the occupied West Bank and the blockaded Gaza since last Thursday, when Israel and the UAE announced in a joint statement, issued by the White House, that they had “agreed to the full normalization of relations.”

All Palestinian factions have unanimously condemned the UAE-Israel deal. President Mahmoud Abbas has warned other Arab countries not to follow in Abu Dhabi’s footsteps.

President Abbas slams the UAE for stabbing the Palestinian nation in the back by making peace with Israel, warning other Arab states not to follow suit.
Protests against ‘betrayal to Palestine’

On Wednesday, hundreds of Palestinian people held a protest at the West Bank village of Turmus Ayya to vent their anger at the normalization agreement.

Members of the Gaza-based Hamas resistance group and the Fatah faction of Abbas' Palestinian Authority, headquartered in the West Bank, took part in the demonstration.

“Today we tell the world that we are united against ‘the deal of the century,’ annexation and normalization,” Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh told the rally.

“Any normalization legitimizes the occupation of Palestinian territories,” he added. “It’s a stab in the back.”

Clashes erupted after the protesters threw stones at Israeli forces, who responded with tear gas and stun grenades.

A similar protest was also held in Gaza City against the US-brokered deal between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv, with the Participants chanting “normalization is betrayal to Jerusalem and Palestine.”

The protesters burned Israeli and US flags and trampled on posters of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump.

The demonstrators further voiced their support for Abbas’ rejection of Trump's self -proclaimed “deal of the century”.

Denouncing the UAE-Israel deal, senior Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya said, “Normalization with the occupation harms us and doesn't serve us. Instead, it serves and promotes the occupation in its projects that target Palestine and the region."

Early on Thursday, Israeli army tanks struck Gaza, responding to incendiary balloon launched from the coastal sliver the previous day that caused fires in the occupied territories.

At least 28 fires broke out in the Gaza border communities on Wednesday, according to the Israeli Walla news website.

The Israeli Army Spokesperson's Unit said tanks struck Hamas “military posts,” adding, “The strike was executed in response to the launch of explosive and incendiary balloons from the territory of the Gaza Strip.”

Gaza security officials said the fire hit Hamas observation posts near al-Maghazi and Al-Bureij refugee camps in the center of the strip, and the town of Khan Yunis, further south.

They, however, noted that the Israeli attack caused no casualties.

It was the ninth night the Israeli military targeted Gaza amid growing tensions with Hamas.
