International Women’s Day being observed worldwide today

International Women’s Day is being observed worldwide
International Women’s Day is being observed worldwide to acknowledge the outstanding contributions by women in different fields across the globe with the theme “I am Generation Equality: Realising Women's Rights”.

In her statement for International Women's Day, UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka highlighted 2020 as the year for gender equality and calls on everyone to tackle the persistent barriers against gender equality.

“We don’t have an equal world at the moment and women are angry and concerned about the future”, she said. “They are radically impatient for change. It's an impatience that runs deep, and it has been brewing for years”.

The United Nations first celebrated International Women’s Day during International Women’s Year in 1975. By 1977, the UN and its member states declared March 8 as an official day for women’s rights and world peace.

The day will be observed in Pakistan as well with different seminars, conferences and events in the country to highlight the significance of the role of women in the society.

The main event marking the International Women's Day would be “Aurat Azadi March 2020” in all the major cities across Pakistan.

In Islamabad the day would be marked with rallies and a day-long programme featuring traditional food by women entrepreneurs, folk music and dance, artisan’s stalls, display of paintings by students and a seminar on women rights and law in Pakistan at the Lok Virsa.

Rallies would also be held in Karachi and Lahore at different locations.

The Aurat Azadi March 2020 will start at 03pm outside Islamabad press Club while in Lahore the participants would gather at Lahore Press Club at around 12pm.

In Karachi, the main event is scheduled to be held at Frere Hall in the evening.

Google celebrates International Women’s Day with doodle

Just like every special occasion, Google is celebrating International Women’s Day with a Google Doodle.

To mark the day, Goggle released an animated video designed to represent both the history of the day and the significance it has for women across generations.

The animation, which features a multilayered 3D paper mandala, was illustrated by New York and London-based guest artists Julie Wilkinson and Joyanne Horscroft and animated by Zurich-based guest animators Marion Willam and Daphne Abderhalden from DRASTIK GmbH.

The mandala’s black-and-white central layer reflects women around the world during the late 1800s to the 1930s amidst labour movements, while the second layer depicts women from the 1950s to the 1980s.

The final layer represents women from the 1990s to the present day, in the context of progress made from over 100 years of women’s rights movements.“It pays tribute to breaking barriers from former cultural and gender roles, as women continue to question, reclaim, and redefine ideas about the roles women take on in society,” Google says.

“As today’s women stand on the shoulders of those who have fought and made sacrifices in the generations past, they likewise carry the legacy of the movement forward. Here’s to the women across sectors, industries, nations, ages, and cultures, who persist tirelessly to take charge together—paving the way for future generations to come.”

20 royal princes detained in mass purge by Saudi crown prince

20 royal princes detained in mass purge by Saudi crown prince
A purge of royal princes is under way in Saudi Arabia, after the arrest of the royal family’s highest ranking dissident Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, the brother of King Salman, for allegedly plotting a coup against the king's son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Up to 20 princes have been arrested for allegedly being part of a coup to overthrow the crown prince, also known as MBS.

Four names so far are known. They are Prince Ahmed; his son Prince Nayef bin Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, Head of Land Forces Intelligence and Security Authority; the former Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef; and his half brother Nawaf.

Ahmed's son is the highest ranking member of the Saudi armed forces known to be arrested so far.

Moments after the arrests, MBS ordered the kingdom's princes to tweet their loyalty to him. Three of them have already done so.

According to a regional source cited by Reuters, MBS "accused them [the princes] of conducting contacts with foreign powers, including the Americans and others, to carry out a coup d'etat".

Reuters quoted sources as saying King Salman himself signed the arrest warrants. They claimed his mental state was good. The king is known to suffer from dementia.

There were concerns on Friday about the fate of Prince Miteb bin Abdullah, once seen as a leading contender for the throne, who was released from detention and torture in the Ritz Carlton in 2017 after paying more than $1bn in a settlement with authorities.

Miteb, 65, is the son of the late King Abdullah and former head of the elite National Guard.

The purge underway is the boldest and most desperate act yet of his nephew MBS in the crown prince's quest for absolute power.

It has bigger implications for the stability of the kingdom than both the purge of up to 500 members of Saudi Arabia's business elite in the Ritz Carlton on alleged corruption charges on 4 November 2017, and the state ordered murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul a year later.

Both US and British intelligence had sought and acquired guarantees from MBS that Prince Ahmed would not be arrested on his return to the kingdom from London in October 2018.

Bin Nayef was himself a trusted member of the counter-terrorism alliance spearheaded by the CIA and the Pentagon.

Since his unseating as crown prince, Prince Nayef has had his entourage, mobile phones and allowances stripped and was not allowed to travel. He and his half brother were arrested while at a private desert camp on Friday.

According to sources, Nayef had complained bitterly to friends and in letters to the king himself about the withdrawal of his royal allowances.

His and Prince Ahmed's names had been consistently mentioned by other senior sources in the royal family about potential replacements for the crown prince, as discontent with his absolutist rule mounted in the kingdom.

Opposition to MBS no secret

Prince Ahmed is the highest ranking royal dissident in the kingdom and was open in his criticism of MBS.

When he left his home in London to return to Saudi Arabia in October 2018, he calculated that his rank as the king's younger brother, and not least the last of the seven Sudairi brothers, gave him immunity from his nephew's actions.

As I revealed at the time, Prince Ahmed had considerable doubts about the wisdom of his return, and was contemplating remaining permanently in exile.

Ahmed was persuaded to return by pleas from other princes, showing the high regard in which he was still held in the kingdom, and by the fact that he still wielded official influence as a member of the Beya, or Allegiance Council, the body which still nominally has to approve MBS' accession to the throne.

Ahmed made no secret of his opposition to MBS' appointment as crown prince, or to the Yemen campaign which the crown prince, as defence minister, launched in 2015, before himself going on holiday in the Maldives.

Challenged by a token demonstration of Yemeni and Bahraini protesters chanting: "Down, down Al Saud. Criminal family," outside his London home, one month before he left, Ahmed walked over to them and asked: "Why are you saying this about Al Saud?

"What does the whole of the Al Saud family have to do with this? There are certain individuals who are responsible. Don't involve anyone else."

Asked by the protesters who was responsible, the prince replied: "The king and the crown prince, and others in the state."

Karachi's development means Pakistan progresses, says PM

Karachi's development means Pakistan progresses, says PM
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday said that it was impossible to develop cities from the funds that were provided to provinces.

The prime minister was addressing an event in Karachi via video link from Islamabad. PM Imran was scheduled to visit Karachi today, but he had to call it off due to bad weather.

"Karachi's development means Pakistan progresses," said the prime minister. "I would like to ask Imran Ismail to inform people about the development projects that we will initiate for Sindh in general and Karachi in particular," he added.

PM Imran said that it was impossible to improve the system in cities from the provinces' funds. "Half of Punjab's budget was spent on Lahore previously due to which other cities of the province suffered," he said.

The prime minister said that cities around the world were empowered to collect revenues on their own and then start development projects. He cited examples of cities such as New York, London and even Mumbai, where cities were run by their own elected governments.

He said that Karachi was the centre of economic activity in the country and that its development meant people got employment opportunities. PM Imran said that the PTI government had brought about reforms in Punjab Police and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police.

"In Sindh, the police are not performing which is why there are Rangers in the province," he said. He said that the government was trying to ensure that there was no interference in police matters.

The prime minister apologised to attendees that he couldn't make it to the event.

IHC: NAB executive powers harmful to economy, foreign policy of country

Islamabad High Court and NAB
The Islamabad High Court has declared abuse of arrest powers by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) harmful to the economy, investment policies and foreign policy interests of the State.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah, in his detailed judgment on the 4G licensing, remarked that incompetence, lack of professional expertise and proper training to deal with white-collar crime, besides jeopardizing constitutional rights, can have deleterious consequences for the governance system and cause harm to the economy.

The judgment stressed that an effective and efficient accountability process or mechanism is an integral part of a democratic system and a precondition for upholding the rule of law.

But, the foundational principle or requirement for an effective and credible accountability entity, such as the bureau, is the trust and confidence of the people in its fairness, impartiality, professionalism and, above all, that it is free from discrimination.

“Arbitrary or indiscriminate exercise of executive powers vested in such entities, instead of achieving the public interest for which it has been established, could greatly harm other public interests,” the court said.

The court remarked that there is no doubt that corruption is one of the biggest evils that can plague the governance system of a country as it affects everyone, but ‘the most vulnerable and downtrodden are the real victims and thus cannot be tolerated in any form’.

Therefore, “across the board accountability in a transparent manner and free from discrimination and arbitrary exercise of powers is inevitable to meet the challenges faced due to the menace of corruption,” IHC said and stressed on “Professional training, qualification and expertise of the investigators and prosecutors to deal with white-collar crimes.”

Saudi Arabia detains two senior royals

Saudi Arabia has detained two senior members of the Saudi royal family
Saudi Arabia has detained two senior members of the Saudi royal family - Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, the younger brother of King Salman, and Mohammed bin Nayef, the king’s nephew, two sources with knowledge of the matter said.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, King Salman’s son and the de facto ruler of the world’s top oil exporter and key U.S. ally, has moved to consolidate power since ousting his cousin, Mohammed bin Nayef, as heir to the throne in a palace coup in 2017.

He arrested several royals in an anti-corruption campaign later that year.

One source said the detentions took place on Friday. Reuters could not immediately determine the reasons behind the detentions.

The Wall Street Journal reported the detentions of the two royals earlier on Friday, and said they related to an alleged coup attempt.

Saudi officials could not be immediately reached for comment early on Saturday. The Saudi government media office did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Prince Mohammed has fueled resentment among some prominent branches of the ruling family by tightening his grip on power and some question his ability to lead following the 2018 murder of a prominent journalist by Saudi agents and the largest-ever attack on Saudi oil infrastructure last year, sources have said.

They said royals seeking to change the line of succession view Prince Ahmed, King Salman’s only surviving full brother, as a possible choice who would have support of family members, the security apparatus, and some Western powers.

Saudi insiders and Western diplomats say the family is unlikely to oppose the crown prince while the 84-year-old king remains alive, recognizing that the king is unlikely to turn against his favorite son.

The monarch has delegated most responsibilities of rule to his son but still presides over weekly cabinet meetings and receives foreign dignitaries.

Prince Ahmed has largely kept a low profile since returning to Riyadh in October 2018 after 2-1/2 months abroad.

During the trip, he appeared to criticize the Saudi leadership while responding to protesters outside a London residence chanting for the downfall of the Al Saud dynasty.

He was one of only three people on the Allegiance Council, made up of the ruling Al Saud family’s senior members, who opposed Mohammed bin Salman becoming crown prince in 2017, sources have earlier said.

Mohammed bin Nayef’s movements have been restricted and monitored since then, sources have previously said.

The latest detentions come at a time of heightened tension with regional rival Iran and as Crown Prince Mohammed implements ambitious social and economic reforms, including an initial public offering by oil giant Saudi Aramco on the domestic bourse last December. Saudi Arabia is also the current chair for the Group of 20 major economies.

Prince Mohammed has been lauded at home for easing social restrictions in the Muslim kingdom and opening up the economy. But he has come under international criticism over a devastating war in Yemen, the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the kingdom’s Istanbul consulate and the detention of women’s rights activists seen as part of a crackdown on dissent.

Prince Harry guilty and 'feeling terrible' over hurting Queen Elizabeth

Prince Harry
Prince Harry appears to be gearing up for the end of March 2020 with blazing enthusiasm, as this month marks the official end of his and Meghan Markle's roles as senior royals in the royal family.

However, it seems there is a tad bit of 'guilt' that is sitting on the prince’s shoulders as he departs from royal life. A source claims that Prince Harry is sad over how his departure has affected his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.

According to a source by US Weekly, the prince “feels terrible about hurting his grandmother, whom he adores.” The main reason why the Queen is ‘heartbroken’ is “over the thought of not getting to see her great-grandson” or grandson as often.

A separate source claims, “The queen would love to have a relationship with Archie, but it’s looking unlikely that will ever happen.” In her old age, the Queen is reportedly “emotionally and physically exhausted” over the drama that the royal exit has caused. She just wants the transition to be “over and done with.”

That is not to say that the Queen is the only one suffering from the idea of being away from her loved ones, Prince Harry reportedly “misses nights out with his boys, polo matches and rugby, and he’s really been craving a decent pint.” He had to “put his wife first, end of story. Even if it’s left him feeling a bit isolated.”

Over 100 hospitalized after gas leak at chemical factory in Karachi

Over 100 hospitalized after gas leak at chemical factory in Karachi
At least 100 people were hospitalized due to suffocation caused by gas leakage at a chemical factory in Karachi’s Port Qasim area.

As per details, the incident occurred after a gas pipeline burst at factory.

Rescue sources said that over 80 patients were shifted to Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC), while two people are in critical condition.

The spokesperson of the chemical factory said that the situation is under control and no human loss was reported in the gas leakage incident. He said that all people affected due to gas leak have been shifted to nearby hospitals.

“The company’s technical team is investigating the chemical gas leak matter,” he added.

Moreover, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of the incident and directed authorities to halt the company’s operation.

Earlier, the suspected gas leakage in Karachi Keemari had killed at least 14 people and affected more than 300 people, including women and children.

The Global Environmental Labs (GEL) in its initial report claims that the air in the port area of Kemari has registered an extraordinary increase in the amount of sulfur dioxide presence.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a pungent corrosive gas that arises predominantly from the burning of coal or crude oil in power plants and from factories that produce chemicals, paper, or fuel.

The lab revealed that the normal ranges of the chemical present in the air are around 120 per cent which had been bumped up to a whopping 1420 per cent since the incident was first reported.

The top Iranian diplomat said that Iran is closely cooperating with international agencies, like the World Health Organization, to contain the spread of the disease both inside Iran and into other countries.

e also attached a video clip to his tweet showing that travelers arriving in the Iranian airports were going through strict controls and checks to spot any infection.

“Strict preventive measures—including screening of air travelers at departure gates—are being implemented,” read part of Zarif’s tweet.

A total of 107 people have died of coronavirus in Iran while the total number of confirmed cases was put at 3,513 as of Thursday noon local time.

Iran has been battling the virus amid a series of economic woes caused by the American sanctions on the country.

That comes as the sanctions have hampered Iran’s access to medicine and medical gear.

China, the country where coronavirus originated more than two months ago, said on Thursday that US bans on Iran were against the spirit of humanity, calling on Washington to remove the sanctions.

China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said Washington should stop hampering efforts both by Iran and the international community to stop the spread of coronavirus.

IHC dismisses petitions against Aurat March as being ‘non-maintainable

The Islamabad High Court
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday dismissed two petitions against Aurat March.

A two-judge bench, under the stewardship of Chief Justice Athar Minallah, dismissed the petitions as being non-maintainable.

The bench had reserved its verdict on the petitions after hearing arguments by the petitioners’ lawyers earlier today.

Over the course of the hearing, Justice Minallah came down hard on the petitioners who had no answers to his basic questions. He also remarked that there is a need for introspection on the subject rather than vilifying it as a whole.

Chief Justice Athar Minallah said that the demands of the women organising and taking part in the ‘Aurat March’ have been the same as the demands set out by Islam since its inception.

He said that the first person to come into the fold of Islam after Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) was a woman too.

He continued that the women held a press conference on the subject to clear the air on the matter and detailed their demands, he asked the petitioners if they heard their explanation of the slogans and the meaning behind the march?

The petitioners remained blank on the inquiry and told the court that they had not seen the press conference being mentioned by the court.

FM Qureshi condemns Kabul attack, says peace is the only choice

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, condemning the attack in Kabul during a political rally earlier in the day, said that the move was made by those who are against the establishment of peace in Afghanistan and seek to use the country for their own gain.

He said that a close eye will have to be kept on those that are sabotaging the peace process, calling on US and other global powers to keep an eye on such elements.

The foreign minister said that the exercise is one that will test our patience but that there is no other solution but to remain steadfast in the pursuit of peace.

He regretted that for the past 19 years, the country had been witnessing such incidents and noted that the people of Aghanistan truly desire peace.

“The attack is extremely regrettable and condemnable,” he said, adding that the Taliban had denied any involvement in it.

“Those who seek to disrupt peace are in Afghanistan and also outside of it,” he said, without elaborating further.

The foreign minister pledged Pakistan’s support in whatever assistance it can provide.

Twenty-seven people were reportedly killed and 29 were wounded when a political rally led by Afghanistan leader Abdullah Abdullah was attacked by gunmen.

The Taliban immediately denied responsibility for the assault, which occurred at the commemoration ceremony for Abdul Ali Mazari — a politician from the Hazara ethnic group.

Interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi said gunfire had erupted from a construction site near the ceremony in the city’s west.

The ceremony was attended by many of the country’s political elite, including Abdullah Abdullah. The interior ministry later confirmed to reporters that "all the high-ranking officials were safely evacuated from the scene".

The incident comes less than a week after the US and Taliban signed a deal that would pave the way for the complete withdrawal of foreign troops in 14 months.

However, fighting has continued to rage across the country, casting a pall over hopes that the agreement would lead to a reduction in violence.

PM Imran Khan praises Iran’s Supreme Leader, Erdogan for condemning
Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has thanked Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for condemning “oppression and massacre” of Muslims in India and Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister of Pakistan tweeted “I want to thank Supreme Leader Khamenei, & President Erdogan, for speaking against the oppression & massacre of Muslims in India & Kashmiris in IOJK by the Hindu Supremacist Modi regime,” the premier wrote on his official Twitter handle on Thursday.

PM Imran was responding to the tweet of Iran’s supreme leader’s in which he urged India to “confront extremist Hindus” and “stop the massacre of Muslims”.

Dozens of people were killed and hundreds injured, while at least two mosques were attacked in the worst communal riots in Delhi in decades last week, triggered by clashes between supporters of a new citizenship law and those against it.

“The hearts of Muslims all over the world are grieving over the massacre of Muslims in India,” Khamenei said in a tweet in English, just days after New Delhi rebuked Iran’s foreign minister for commenting on the same issue.

President Erdogan is one of the few Muslim leaders who has been very vocal against the Modi-led government’s extremist Hindutva policies under which it revoked the special status of Occupied Kashmir and introduced a controversial anti-Muslim law.

“India right now has become a country where massacres are widespread. What massacres? Massacres of Muslims? By who? Hindus,” Erdogan said during a speech in Ankara last month.

In a follow-up tweet, Premier Imran lamented lack of condemnation by the majority of Muslims leaders against the discriminatory policies of the Modi government.

“Sadly, few voices from the Muslim World are speaking out & condemning this; & more voices are being raised in the West condemning the Hindu Supremacist Modi regime’s massacre of Muslims in India & Kashmiris in IOJK,” he tweeted.

Supreme Leader Khamenei urges India to stop the massacre of Muslims

supreme leader Khamenei
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged India on Thursday to “confront extremist Hindus” and “stop the massacre of Muslims”, adding to the international fallout over deadly violence in New Delhi.

At least 44 people were killed and hundreds injured in the worst communal riots in the Indian capital in decades.

“The hearts of Muslims all over the world are grieving over the massacre of Muslims in India,” Khamenei said in a tweet in English, just days after New Delhi rebuked Iran’s foreign minister for commenting on the same issue.

“Iran condemns the wave of organized violence against Indian Muslims,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted on Monday, in response to which New Delhi summoned the Islamic Republic’s ambassador and lodged a protest.

“We do not expect such comments from a country like Iran,” ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar said in a statement later.

The citizenship law provides non-Muslims from neighbouring countries a fast track to Indian citizenship.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government says this is required to help minorities from those countries. Critics argue the law discriminates against Muslims and violates the spirit of India’s secular constitution.

Hundreds of thousands of people have taken part in protests since December.

Earlier this week, the office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights said it intended to approach India’s Supreme Court about the citizenship law.

Incredible India' now being viewed as intolerant India: Qureshi

shah mehmood qureshi
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Thursday stated that 'Incredible India' is now being viewed as "intolerant India", and 'Shining India' as "burning India", adding that the country is now facing international scrutiny like never before.

The foreign minister expressed these views while speaking at a seminar, organised by the Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies, in Islamabad.

During his address, Qureshi stated: "Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies are taking a bloody and dangerous turn, as predicted by Prime Minister Imran Khan."

Referring to the country's contentious bill that sparked deadly riots in the Indian capital, he said: "India's Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens are aimed at disenfranchising the country's 200 million Muslims."

Referring to the 2002 riots in Gujrat, Qureshi said: "The pogrom of Gujrat is being replayed on the streets of New Delhi. This is a matter of deep concern to Pakistan and should be to the entire world. Hindutva and its capture of Indian state institutions poses the single, gravest threat to global and regional peace and security.

"Pakistan has not sought conflict with India, but we have not appeased either. We have not shied away from lending our full voice and support to the beleaguered people of occupied Kashmir. We have not shied away from exposing the real Indian intent and agenda to the world.

"Today, after decades of hiatus, the Kashmiri issue is fully alive and internationalised. The world's opinion is turning in favour of the Kashmiris, and against ruling Hindu supremacists.

"We have no doubt that the world community can clearly see the BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] government in India for what it is; an ideologically driven, hate-filled, majoritarian clique that is destroying the societal fabric, and deeply hurting minorities, especially Muslims.

"They must be held accountable for the crimes against humanity they are committing everyday," he said.

The foreign minister also stated that Pakistan remains committed to its core objective of lowering tensions and promoting peace and stability in the region.

Pakistan will not become involved in any regional conflict and will continue to support negotiated settlements of all regional disputes, the report quoted him as saying.

"Dialogue is the only viable option to bring peace and stability to the region," he added.

Coronavirus: 290 million students out of school as global virus battle intensifies

290 million students out of school as global virus battle intensifies
Students worldwide face weeks at home amid growing coronavirus fears with Italy on Thursday becoming the latest country to shut schools over the deadly new coronavirus, as the IMF urged an all-out, global offensive against the epidemic.

More than 95,000 people have been infected and over 3,200 have died worldwide from the virus, which has now reached some 80 countries and territories.

The vast majority of global deaths and infections are in China, where the virus first emerged late last year, prompting the country to quarantine entire cities, temporarily shut factories and close schools indefinitely.

As the virus spread, other countries have also implemented extraordinary measures, with UNESCO saying Wednesday that 13 countries have closed schools, affecting 290.5 million children, while nine others have implemented localised closures.

While temporary school closures during crises are not new, UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay said, "the global scale and speed of the current educational disruption is unparalleled and, if prolonged, could threaten the right to education."

Italy on Wednesday ordered schools and universities shuttered until March 15, ramping up its response as the national death toll rose to 107, the deadliest outbreak outside China.

South Korea — the country with the largest number of cases outside China with nearly 6,000 — has postponed the start of the current term until March 23.

In Japan, nearly all schools are closed after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called for classes to be cancelled through March and spring break, slated for late March through early April.

Some 120 schools closed in France this week in areas with the largest numbers of infections.

Schools across Pakistan's Sindh province have been shut down till March 13 as five cases were reported in the country, two from Karachi, the province's largest city.

Schools in Balochhistan will also remain shut till March 15 as part of the measures being taken to prevent coronavirus and for the safety of children.

Economic threat

The German health minister said the outbreak was now a "global — a term the World Health Organisation has stopped short of using, meaning the virus is spreading in several regions through local transmission.

Infections are now rising faster abroad than they are in China, where 31 more deaths and 139 new cases were reported Thursday. China´s death toll now stands at 3,012, with over 80,000 infections.

From western Europe to eastern Asia, supermarket shelves have been stripped of supplies in recent weeks, including toilet paper and hand sanitiser.

Bill banning corporal punishment approved by cabinet, to be tabled NA: Shireen Mazari

Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari
Minister for Human Rights on Thursday said a bill banning corporal punishment in schools across the country had been approved by the federal cabinet and would be tabled before the National Assembly soon.

The minister Shireen Mazari made the revelation after attending the hearing of a petition filed by singer and activist Shehzad Roy at the Islamabad High Court against corporal punishment in schools. IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah conducted the hearing.

Last month, the high court had ordered a complete ban on corporal punishment in educational institutions operating in the federal capital territory. Justice Minallah had subsequently also suspended Section 89 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which allows corporal punishment in some cases in the federal capital territory.

"The federal cabinet has approved the bill, and it will now be tabled in parliament," Mazari told the courtroom on Thursday morning.

"The Ministry of Interior raised objections to the bill, claiming that the matter does not fall under the jurisdiction of the human rights ministry," she said.

Upon hearing this, Justice Minallah said that the matter did indeed concern human rights and the federal government was obligated to legislate upon it.

"The interior ministry has also asked us to table the bill before the Council of Islamic Ideology," Mazari informed the court.

"We support the ban on corporal punishment. Prime Minster Imran Khan has also said that that corporal punishment in schools should be abolished. The court should declare Section 89 of the Pakistan Penal Code null and void," Mazari pleaded during the hearing.

After hearing the statements made by Mazari, Justice Minallah remarked that under Article 14 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the intent to hit a child can never be deemed a 'good' one.

"Physical and mental punishments negatively affect the personality of a child," Justice Minallah noted. "We cannot endorse corporal punishment in schools. Even Islam forbids torture against children. There is never a good intention to hit a child. The times have changed: we must give more respect to children," he added.

Activist Shehzad Roy, while talking to reporters after the hearing, hoped that the bill banning corporal punishment would be tabled in the National Assembly soon.

"[Support for] corporal punishment is a mindset. A law will be made against it soon," he assured reporters.

"We are thankful to the media for supporting us in this cause. Hitting children is against the teachings of Islam."
