Video gaming fiends with an itch hit Twitch

Video gaming fiends with an itch hit Twitch
Seven years on from the rebranding of its original incarnation Justin.tv, video game live-streaming platform Twitch boasts more than a million people tuned in at any moment and interest is rising.

Today's top "streamers" are celebrities who can earn fame and a healthy living from competitive video gaming — but co-founder Emmett Shear says his lightbulb moment came back in 2010, four years before Amazon swooped to net Twitch for a cool $970 million.

"In 2010, I realised the content I loved, that I was watching on Justin.tv, was all gaming content," says Shear.

"(I) loved the streamers, so I decided we would start focusing on just gaming, and there was a huge opportunity there," Shear told AFP.

So Twitch came into being — the name alluding to a player's action response time.

Twitch brands itself as a global community showcasing "unique, live, unpredictable experiences created by the interactions of millions," the entertainment ranging from "casual gaming to world-class esports to anime marathons, music, and art streams."

China blocking the platform last September was a bump in the road but the company was already going strong on 2017 revenues of $1.7 billion — 54 percent of a gaming content sector cake worth $3.2 billion, according to data from market intelligence agency SuperData.

SuperData says the platform of net giant Google held a mere 22 percent market share in 2017 as "despite having half the GVC (gaming video content) audience of YouTube, Twitch?s audience is more engaged and willing to spend on their favourite broadcasters".

"Twitch has been conceived for video game spectators, unlike other platforms," says Laurent Michaud, director of study for France's IDATE digital think tank.

Today, some 670 million people watched at least one video game in 2017 — watching as streamers shoot at zombies, cast spells or construct their own imaginary universe.

Shear draws a parallel with watching television.

"If you understand watching TV, maybe you like watching cooking, travel, talk show. It's fun in all of those cases to watch people who are the best in the world at what they do...

"I don't think watching video games is all that different from watching grown men kicking a ball around a field or someone cook a pie."

Spectators can take part on the sidelines by sending up comments and emoticons as 'play' unfolds as well as make donations to favourite players.

Shear, who says Twitch wants to help highlight budding gaming talents, says the platform's main revenue streams — advertising and subscriptions for 'privileges' such as VIP 'badges' and access to special emojis — enable gamers to make cash from their content.

Even so, the vast majority will not come close to "Fortnite" legend Tyler "Ninja" Blevins, who recently told sports multimedia group ESPN his gaming nets him a monthly revenue in seven figures and who boasts more than 12 million Twitch followers.

Whereas technical quality was the initial priority for Twitch, today it is offering visibility to 'small streamers' which is key in the hope they will eventually earn greater popularity and with it more revenue.

Regarding how to 'make it' in revenue terms "it's very complicated to do it for the money — that only works for very few people," says communications specialist and Twitch player Mylene Lourdel.

"Often it's just a bit of extra cash to allow you to invest in material."

But for Shear, "we really think it?s the most important thing to do, to help small streamers make it and go full time and maybe find a way to make a living."

He says an ideal game "enables audience interactivity, when you have enough downtime in between matches or during a slow part in the match that you get a chance to interact with the audience — or even better if the game itself engages people to interact with you."

Although big-ticket events such as League of Legends or Fortnite dominate, those so inclined can follow fringe offerings such as cooking channels who may emulate South Korea's Mokbang or broadcast "social eating" trend.

Beyond gaming, but chowing down online in front of virtual dining partners helps bring Twitch full circle in harking back to the early days of Justin.tv.

EU leaders to sign off historic Brexit deal

Theresa May met European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker on the eve of a summit to approve a historic Brexit deal.
European Union leaders meet Sunday to approve a historic Brexit deal, which British Prime Minister Theresa May said would deliver her country a "brighter future".

At a special summit in Brussels that was almost derailed by a row over Gibraltar, the other 27 leaders will gather to sign off the agreement before May joins them to mark the milestone.

Forged during 17 months of tough negotiations, the deal covers financial matters, citizens' rights, Northern Ireland and a transition phase, and sets out hopes for future security and trade ties.

But it is not the final stage, as the House of Commons in London must still approve the deal before Brexit day on March 29, 2019 — and many MPs have warned they will not back it.

Until the agreement is approved, all sides are still planning for the potentially disastrous possibility that Britain ends its four-decade EU membership with no new arrangements in place.

'Reduce risks and losses'

EU Council President Donald Tusk, who has always said he would prefer Britain not to leave, said on the eve of the summit that "no-one will have reasons to be happy" when Brexit happens.

But he said terms had been agreed that would "reduce the risks and losses", and recommended that EU leaders sign off on the deal.

Eurosceptics in May's Conservative party and their Northern Irish allies warn they will not support the agreement when MPs vote as expected next month.

But in an open "letter to the nation" on Sunday, May said it delivered on the 2016 referendum vote to leave, and was a "deal for a brighter future".

Britain remains deeply divided over the decision, but the prime minister said that finally leaving could be "a moment of renewal and reconciliation".

"To do that we need to get on with Brexit now by getting behind this deal," she said.

Gibraltar tensions

May arrived on the eve of the summit for final talks with Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, after which Tusk's spokesman tweeted: "We are on track for tomorrow."

But nothing in the negotiations has gone smoothly and the summit risked being derailed by a late objection to the deal by Spain over the British territory of Gibraltar.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez threatened to reject it unless his country kept a veto over future changes to EU ties with "The Rock", which borders Spain and which it has long claimed.

The impasse was resolved when Britain promised to continue bilateral talks with Madrid after Brexit — although that itself caused further tensions.

Sanchez claimed that discussions would cover the "co-sovereignty" of Gibraltar, something residents overwhelmingly rejected in a 2002 referendum.

May was quick to correct her Spanish counterpart, saying: "The UK's position on the sovereignty of Gibraltar has not changed and will not change."

In legal terms, Spain's disapproval would not have halted the divorce settlement.

Fishing rights

But it would have been an embarrassing split for EU leaders who have proved remarkably united in the painful negotiation.

British MPs are most concerned about an arrangement in the withdrawal agreement to keep open the border between British Northern Ireland and Ireland, which could see the province follow EU rules for years.

But there are also concerns in EU capitals about fishing rights and commercial rules Britain must follow to maintain access to the bloc's markets.

A diplomatic source said the minutes of Sunday's summit meeting of the 27 leaders would record those concerns, although it was not clear if they would be made public.

Thousands protest in 'feminist tidal wave' against sexist violence

Thousands protest in 'feminist tidal wave' against sexist violence
Tens of thousands of people rallied across Europe on Saturday against sexist violence, with more than 30,000 turning out in Paris.

Demonstrations across France drew around 50,000 people in all, according to organiser Caroline de Haas, to answer a citizen collective´s call for a "feminist tidal wave" of outrage against gender violence brought into sharp focus by the #MeToo movement.

Elsewhere, a thousand people braved driving rain in Rome while similar protests drew several hundred demonstrators in Geneva and Athens on the eve of the UN´s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Sunday.

In Spain´s capital Madrid, several hundred people took to the streets to march to loud drumming as some shouted "We are all here, the murderers are missing".

Authorities put the Paris turnout at 12,000 and similar marches in Lyon, Marseille and Rennes at between 1,000 and 2,400, but De Haas felt moved to salute "the largest (feminist) mobilisation France has known", far bigger than a rally that drew some 2,000 last year.

French President Emmanuel Macron offered his support, tweeting: "The fight against violence against women is progressing daily but our society has a long way to go — everyone must act and fight as this is everybody´s business."

Participants clad in purple, the colour of the #NousToutes women´s activist protest movement, shouted slogans including "sick of rape", "end impunity for aggressors" and "a woman is never responsible for the violence she suffers", while also demanding sufficient government resources to tackle the issue.

"I am here to support all the victims and continue this struggle which started long before I came along," said French actress Muriel Robin, who had organised a similar rally last month in the capital.

Rise in violence cases

The rallies drew a number of men, including Tanguy, a 19-year-old student who turned out in the western city of Rennes to declare backing for "a movement which is not based on sex -- it´s not a fight pitting men against women but a fight by men and women, together, against inequality."

The #NousToutes movement started out in France in September, inspired by the #MeToo campaign that began last year since when the number of cases of sexual violence reported to police in France has risen 23 percent.

Latest French government figures say 2017 saw 225,000 cases of domestic violence against women by their partners while 2016 saw 123 deaths.

Further marches are planned for Sunday in a number of cities across Europe to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Macron last year made sexual equality a priority of his presidency.

But "if the money is not forthcoming public policy won´t follow on", warned De Haas, speaking two days after several civil organisations called for a huge increase in public resources dedicated to the problem.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced on Saturday that an online platform for reporting sexual violence and sexism will be launched on Tuesday.

"This is the first milestone, technical and political, to eradicate" violence, said he said in a Facebook post.

"From now, a few clicks can help everyone make a new start: for themselves, for their family. And perhaps avoid the worst."

Australia ease past England to claim women's T20 crown

Australia ease past England to claim women's T20 crown
Ashleigh Gardner scored an unbeaten 33 as Australia beat England by eight wickets to win the Women’s World T20 title on the Caribbean island of Antigua on Saturday.

The Southern Stars easily chased down England’s total of 105 all out, polishing off the runs with 29 balls to spare in only 15.1 overs at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound.

The victory was their fourth world T20 title and comes at the end of a tumultuous year in which the men’s test team was rocked by a ball-tampering scandal that led to year-long suspensions for captain Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner.

Gardner was named Player of the Match after hoisting three sixes in her 26-ball knock, while captain Meg Lanning (28) scored the winning run.

Lanning said the title had been particularly sweet in light of recent disappointments at global tournaments.

“The last two World Cups really hurt and we had to change a few things and move it forward,” she said, referring to their semi-final loss at the 50-over World Cup last year and defeat to West Indies in the title match of this tournament in 2016.

“The group embraced it and it was a very satisfying win.

“We did not have our best day in the field but the bowlers did a good job.”

England batted first after winning the toss and opener Danielle Wyatt top scored with 43, but captain Heather Knight with 25 was the only other player to reach double figures as the team were bowled out in 19.4 overs.

Knight nonetheless had no regrets about her decision.

“We knew there would be dew, more dew than there was in the semis. We wanted to bat first though,” she said.

UNSC condemns attacks in Karachi, Orakzai

The United Nations Security Council
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Saturday condemned the attacks on the Chinese Consulate in Karachi and the suicide attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s lower Orakzai district that killed 33 people on Friday.

Members of the Security Council also expressed their appreciation for the swift response by Pakistani authorities.

In a statement, the Council members stressed that “terrorism in all its forms and manifestations” constituted one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.

“Any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed,” they said, underscoring the need to hold the perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of terrorist acts accountable and bring them to justice.”

Council members also called upon all UN Member States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Government of Pakistan and all other relevant authorities in that regard.

Further, the council members also stressed upon “the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises, and the obligations on host Governments, including under international treaties, to protect those premises and their officials.”

On Friday morning, Pakistani security forces foiled an attack on the Chinese Consulate in the Clifton Block-4 area of the city.

Terrorists were trying to enter the consulate from the visa issuance section but were intercepted by security personnel at a checkpoint. Two policemen, Assistant Sub Inspector Ashraf Dawood and Constable Amir, were martyred and a security guard injured as three gunmen tried to enter the consulate around 9:00am. Two visa applicants from Quetta, a father and son identified as Niaz Muhammad and Muhammad Zahir Shah, also lost their lives in the attack.

The three attackers were killed in the operation.

On the same day, a blast targeting a local market in the lower Orakzai district left 33 dead, including three children and at least 56 injured.

According to the court written order Anwar Majeed would be shifted to PIMS hospital, while Abdul Ghani Majeed to Adiala Jail.

It has been said in the written order that JIT should investigate them in hospital and jail.

Majeed, his son Abdul Ghani and Lawai are among the accused in a mega money laundering scam amounting to Rs54 billion. As a bench of the top court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar heard the case that pertains to money laundering through fake bank accounts at the SC’s Lahore registry, senior officials of the concerned banks, Anwar Majeed’s son Nimr Majeed and others appeared before the bench.

During the hearing, the joint investigation team (JIT) probing the case asked the court to transfer the case out of Karachi. Majeed’s lawyer requested that the case not be moved out of the city.

But the top judge did not concede and said that the accused have influence in Karachi, which will affect the court proceedings: “They should be shifted to Islamabad so an independent investigation can be carried out.”

Justice Gulzar also ordered railways officials to immediately remove all encroachments on the route of Karachi Circular Railway.

Railways officials said they had launched a clean-up drive on the orders of the apex court and will ensure removal of all encroachments.

The Pakistan Railways (PR) will begin a “grand operation” from Monday for the removal of encroachments along both tracks of the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR), officials said. The KCR was commissioned in 1964, originally to help employees of the Pakistan Railways travel between their jobs at and around the City and Cantonment railway stations and their residences in Karachi’s eastern neighbourhoods.

The service became a full circle of 44km in 1970 and connected Karachi’s four main work areas: the port, the Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE), the city’s central commercial areas such as Saddar and the Landhi Industrial Area.

The KCR remained the public transport of choice for the people of Karachi till 1984 when the number of its trains was reduced. Reasons for the move included lack of maintenance and repair, a yawning gap between rising expenditure due to higher fuel and operational costs and decreasing revenue due to subsidised tickets and the government’s inability to spend money on the improvement of tracks and stations.

According to the Karachi Mass Transit Cell, the number of level crossings points where a railway line crosses a road or any other thoroughfare also increased in the city, causing KCR trains to take longer to complete their journey. At one stage, there were 34 level crossings on the KCR route.

The KCR finally shut down in 1999, forcing thousands of its daily users to travel by buses.

France agrees to return 26 African artworks claimed by Benin

There are about 90,000 African artworks in French museums
French President Emmanuel Macron has agreed to return, "without delay", 26 African artworks claimed by Benin, according to the president's office.

The decision on Friday came shortly after Macron received a report detailing how former colonisers can return looted artworks to Africa.

Governments from Ethiopia to Senegal eagerly awaited the report, commissioned by Macron and compiled by French art historian, Benedicte Savoy, and Senegalese economist Felwine Sarr.

It recommends that the thousands of items in French museums taken without consent during the colonial period be returned to the continent.

Unless it can be proven that the objects were obtained legitimately, they should be returned to Africa permanently, the report's authors say.

Savoy and Starr also recommend changing the French law to allow the restitution of cultural works to Africa, after Macron announced that he wanted the process to begin within five years.

French law currently forbids the government from ceding state property, regardless of how it was obtained.

"I cannot accept that a large part of the cultural heritage of several African countries is in France," Macron said during a visit to Burkina Faso last year.

"There are historical explanations for this but there is no valid, lasting and unconditional justification. African heritage cannot be only in private collections and European museums - it must be showcased in Paris but also in Dakar, Lagos and Cotonou. This will be one of my priorities," he said.

'A new era of thought'
At the height of its colonial empire, France controlled large swaths of the African continent, removing art produced there for display in museums in the French capital, Paris, and elsewhere.

Objects that arrived in France went on to influence the work of major figures in European art, such as Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, and Italian painter and sculptor, Amedeo Modigliani.

According to the report, about 90 percent of African art is currently housed in museums and private collections outside the continent, including statues, thrones and manuscripts.

There are about 90,000 African artworks in French museums, most of them housed in Paris' Quai Branly museum, which also boasts a large collection of Asian art.

The museum was established by former French President Jacques Chirac, an avid collector of African art.

While the decision has been welcomed by officials in some African countries, European art dealers have expressed concerns that repatriation will leave some French museums nearly empty.

The dealers have also questioned who the objects should be returned to when many of the kingdoms and civilisations they were taken from no longer exist.

However, the head of Ethiopia's Authority for Research and Conservation of Cultural Heritage had said the report heralded "a new era of thought" in Europe's relations with Africa, while Senegal's culture minister Youssou Ndour said it was "entirely logical that Africans should get back their works".

Thorny diplomatic issue
France's decision could up the pressure on other European governments and museums to return looted artefacts, which can become a diplomatic headache as well as a painful reminder of colonialism.

According to the AFP news agency, approximately 180,000 African artworks are held in Belgium's Royal Museum for Central Africa, while 37,000 more are in the Weltmuseum in Austria.

The British Museum in London is also in talks to return artefacts, looted from the ancient Benin kingdom, to Nigeria, which now occupies the territory.

This month, a Chilean delegation travelled to the United Kingdom to request the return of artefacts from two London museums.

The UK is also embroiled in a prolonged standoff with Greece over the Elgin Marbles, also known as the Parthenon Marbles, which were removed from Athens in the 1800s.

Museums frequently cite concerns over whether countries have a suitable place to display repatriated treasures, as well as the skills to maintain them.

However, in recent years, some European museums have returned a number of items to their countries of origin.

In August, the British Museum repatriated a trove of 5,000-year old objects looted from an ancient site in Iraq shortly after the United States' invasion in 2003.

France returned 20 mummified Maori heads to New Zealand in 2012, as part of a repatriation programme of the National Museum of New Zealand, which also secured the return of Maori objects from other countries.

France fuel protests: Police in Paris fire tear gas

The report warns that the frequency of wildfires could increase if climate change is unchecked
Police in Paris have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters demonstrating for a second weekend against rising fuel prices.

Clashes broke out on the Champs-Elysées as protesters tried to get through a police security cordon around sensitive sites in the centre of the city.

Several thousand demonstrators are estimated to have gathered and 3,000 police officers have been deployed.

Organisers billed the latest protests as "act two" in their rolling campaign.

Known as "yellow jackets" after their distinctive high-visibility attire, the protesters oppose an increase in fuel duty on diesel.

Demonstrators on the Champs-Elysées came up against metal barriers and a police-enforced perimeter designed to stop them reaching key buildings such as the prime minister's official residence.

The authorities say that so far there is no sign the demonstrators have been able to enter unauthorised areas.

Some demonstrators ripped up paving stones and threw firecrackers at police while shouting slogans calling for President Emmanuel Macron to resign.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner accused the demonstrators of being influenced by the leader of the far-right National Rally party, Marine Le Pen. But she accused him, on Twitter, of dishonesty.

Mr Castaner put the number of people taking part across France at 23,000 by 11:00 (10:00 GMT) - much less than the first day of Yellow Jacket protests, which drew some 280,000 people a week ago.

What lies behind the protesters' anger?

The price of diesel, the most commonly used fuel in French cars, has risen by around 23% over the past 12 months to an average of €1.51 (£1.32; $1.71) per litre, its highest point since the early 2000s.

World oil prices did rise before falling back again but the Macron government raised its hydrocarbon tax this year by 7.6 cents per litre on diesel and 3.9 cents on petrol, as part of a campaign for cleaner cars and fuel.

The decision to impose a further increase of 6.5 cents on diesel and 2.9 cents on petrol on 1 January 2019 was seen as the final straw.

The president has blamed world oil prices for three-quarters of the price rise. He also said more tax on fossil fuels was needed to fund renewable energy investments.

In another sign of the tension sparked by the protests, a man was arrested on Friday in eastern France after threatening to blow himself up with a grenade unless he was granted a meeting with President Macron.

The 45-year-old, wearing a yellow jacket, was confronted in a car wash in the town of Angers but surrendered to police after several hours of negotiations.

Why wear yellow jackets?

All drivers in France have to carry the jackets in their cars as part of safety equipment for use in a breakdown.

Along with the familiar red florescent triangle which must be placed behind a broken-down vehicle on the side of a road, the high-visibility jacket - or "gilet jaune" - must be worn by the driver outside the car.

Failure to wear the jacket after a breakdown or accident can result in a €135 (£120; $153) fine under a law introduced in 2008.

Synonymous with driving, the jackets have now morphed into the uniform of the movement against higher fuel costs.

Feeling ignored

This is a protest from the social media age, which means there are no real leaders, no real demands and no-one is quite sure how many will turn up or where in Paris.

They've been offered rallying-points by the Eiffel Tower and in two big squares in the east of Paris, but there are fears that without any focus, the protesters could break up into myriad small groups - much harder to manage especially if, as is far from impossible, trouble-makers try to join their ranks.

The protest may be amorphous, but the anger is real enough.

Its heartland is what's become known here as the France of the periphery: that is, the thousands of small towns across the country where people depend heavily on cars to get to work and to shop - and feel their values are ignored by the sophisticated rule makers of the capital.

What happened last weekend?

There were protests at more than 2,000 locations across France. Two people were killed and more than 600 injured.

At least 50 people were also arrested, although most of the protests took place without incident.

Several of the injuries and one of the fatalities came when drivers tried to force their way through protesters.

The second death was that of a male demonstrator on a motorbike who collided with a lorry.

Pakistan Close Day One On 207/4 Against NZ in Second Test

Pakistan have scored 207 for the loss of 4 wickets against New Zealand at the close of day one of second test in Dubai.

Currently Haris Sohail (81) and Baber Azam (14) are at the crease.

Earlier, when the inning began, Pakistan lost both the openers within an hour after winning the toss and opting to bat in Dubai.

New Zealand medium pacer Colin de Grandhomme took two wickets to rattle Pakistan to 56-2 at lunch, dismissing Mohammad Hafeez (nine) and Imam-ul-Haq (nine) in successive overs.

Grandhomme, preferred over the more experienced Tim Southee for the second match running, had Hafeez caught in the slip by Tom Latham in the eighth over of the match.

Hafeez´s poor run of form continued. He has managed just 66 runs in six innings since scoring a comeback hundred against Australia at the same venue last month.Imam, dropped on nine by Latham, fell in the same manner in Grandhomme´s next over who has figures of 2-14.

Pakistan need a big total as they bid to level the three-match series after suffering a morale-shattering four-run defeat in the first Test in Abu Dhabi.

Both teams fielded unchanged lineups, with Pakistan resisting the temptation of playing teenage quick Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Playing XI

Australia dust storm: Health warning as skies change colour

The 2009 dust storm seen above the Sydney Opera House
A giant dust storm has blanketed communities across south-east Australia, turning skies orange and raising concerns about air quality.

Authorities issued a public health alert for Sydney on Thursday as the 500km-wide (310 miles) dust band reached the city and caused flight delays.

Many regions elsewhere in New South Wales (NSW) have had poor visibility.

Authorities said the storm was driven by strong winds picking up dry soil.

The problem has been exacerbated by a drought that has affected the entire state of NSW since August, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Paramedics said dozens of people had reported breathing or asthma difficulties on Thursday, but the number affected by dust was not immediately clear.

In Sydney, the dust darkened skies and caused "hazardous" air quality readings in some suburbs.

Health officials urged locals to stay indoors, particularly children, older people and those with respiratory problems.

One resident in Broken Hill, a town 1,100km west of Sydney, said the dust had lingered for hours on Wednesday.

"You walked outside and it was in your eyes and it was just a gritty feeling," Matt Whitelum told the BBC.

"The winds were also so strong that you had to hold the car door open or it would just slam back into your face."

The Sydney dust storm has drawn comparisons to a more intense event which shrouded the city in 2009.

That dust storm left hundreds of people suffering from breathing difficulties, and forced the grounding of flights.

Google finally cleans up its Esta ads after eight years

Google removed an ad for this official-looking website
Google says it will stop ads for expensive unofficial Esta services appearing at the top of search results, eight years after the first complaints.

In 2010, the US started charging UK travellers to use the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (Esta).

Unofficial sites charging five times as much as the US government soon flooded the top of Google's search results, despite breaking Google's ad rules.

Now, after a BBC News investigation, Google says it is tackling the issue.

While unofficial Esta sites will still appear in the search results, they should no longer appear above the official website as advertisements when using the most common search terms.

Since it has used machine learning to address the issue, the ads do still show up for some search terms. Google says this will improve in time.

Why has this taken so long?
The official Esta website is run by the US Department for Homeland Security. It charges $14 (£10.70) for each Esta application.

But countless unofficial sites appeared at the top of Google search results by buying advertisements.

These unofficial sites charged more than $80 for an Esta application.

Google's advertising policies explicitly forbid "charging for products or services where the primary offering is available from a government or public source for free or at a lower price".

The company did take down ads that were manually reported by its users, but the same websites would soon reappear with a new web address.

It was a fruitless game of "whack a mole".

What has changed?
The BBC sent several unofficial Esta ads to Google and asked why they had been allowed to remain on the platform. One of the websites advertised on Google was charging $99 (£76) per Esta.

Google took the ads down, but others immediately filled the space.

After the BBC supplied more of the unofficial Esta ads, Google said it would look into the problem. It later said it had been able to develop its machine learning process to wipe out the unofficial Esta ads.

Following the change, commonly used Esta search terms no longer carry ads for the unofficial services.

Some less common searches may still return ads while the algorithm continues to learn, but the most obvious ones such as "esta" should no longer show ads, it said.

Beyond Estas
Other countries including Australia and Canada also have travel permits similar to the Esta.

Just like the Esta, there are countless unofficial websites offering Australia ETA and Canadian ETA permits at inflated prices.

Ads for these services have also been prominent on Google. But the search giant said it would use the same machine learning systems to eliminate these too.

In a statement, Google said: "We know that people look to Google ads for information about where to get goods and services, so we are committed to ensuring that the ads they see are useful and relevant.

"We use a combination of algorithmic and human review to catch and remove bad ads; and we continue to update our policies and methods of enforcement."

It said it encouraged people to report ads that slipped through the system, so they could be manually reviewed.

His mugshot was posted on the sheriff’s Facebook page where it grabbed the attention of almost 300,000 commenters who competed to make the best neck-related puns and jokes.

Zhang Ziyi says she will never ever buy Dolce & Gabbana again

Chinese superstar actress Zhang Ziyi
It’s not been a great day for Dolce & Gabbana which has managed to piss off 1.4 billion people including Chinese superstar actress Zhang Ziyi who has effectively told the Italian fashion house to “eat shit.”

Amid the massive internet backlash on Wednesday against the brand’s “DG Loves China” marketing campaign, which included videos of an Asian woman attempting to eat a pizza, cannoli, and spaghetti with chopsticks, the 39-year-old Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star posted the following image onto her Weibo account. The speech bubble reads “You dropped your shit, I’m returning it to you.”

The post now has more than 360,000 likes. Subsequently, Zhang’s management released a statement saying that she would not be attending Dolce & Gabbana’s “The Great Show” in Shanghai, which had been scheduled for Wednesday night, adding that neither she nor anyone on her team would ever again buy or use any of the company’s products.

Zhang was just one of a number of high-profile Chinese actors and models who declared that they were skipping the show after racist comments allegedly made on Instagram by co-founder Stefano Gabbana went viral online. The no-shows included two of the company’s long-time Asia brand ambassadors Wang Junkai and Dilraba Dilmurat. Both later also announced that they had terminated their agreements with D&G, removing all posts having anything to do with the brand from their social media accounts.

Chinese actor-singer Chen Kun was the first star to earn kudos for publicly pulling out of the show. After landing at the airport in Shanghai, Chen learned of Gabbana’s alleged comments. He then didn’t even bother to leave the airport, telling his fans “I’m going back.”

Soon, essentially every Chinese celebrity who was scheduled to attend the show had pulled out via a patriotic post on social media. The boycott including the likes of Chen Xuedong, Darren Chen, Darren Wang, Fan Chengcheng Huang Xiaoming, Huo Siyan, Leon Leong, Li Bingbing, Mu Ziyang, Qi Wei, Tang Yixin, Zhang Huiwen, along with long-time editor-in-chief of Vogue China, Angelica Cheung.

Meanwhile, Chinese models reportedly stormed out of the show on their own accord, later taking to the internet to post photos of themselves overlayed with the words “Not Me” in red, sarcastically mirroring Gabbana’s own post in which he claimed that he didn’t write the comments and that his Instagram had been “hacked.”

Even the Communist Youth League has thrown itself into the fray, writing on Weibo that, at minimum, “foreign companies operating in China should respect China and respect the Chinese people.”

In the end, Dolce & Gabbana was forced to cancel its Shanghai event, which was supposed to be the biggest in the company’s 33-year history, just four hours before the event was scheduled to begin. At the moment, there are rumors swirling all around about what the fallout will be and who will take the fall for turning The Great Show into The Shit Show.

Dolce & Gabbana’s Shanghai show canceled after co-founder’s Instagram meltdown over ‘racist’ ad

The fashion gossip Instagram account Diet Prada has providing rolling updates of all the latest chatter, the juiciest of which has Stefano Gabbana being finally pushed out and the company going forward with only its other co-founder Domenico Dolce. Over the years, the 56-year-old Gabbana has been known for putting his foot in his mouth online — for instance, once calling Italian fashion blogger Chiara Ferragni “cheap” on her wedding day.

Though Stefano Gabbana has also feuded with Diet Prada in the past. So take these rumors with an extra grain of salt.

Finally, we leave you with these images from tonight of the very sad-looking venue where D&G’s “The Great Show” was set to take place following the exodus of the Chinese models.

Hamas warns Arabs against warming up to Israel

Head of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh
The Palestinian Hamas resistance movement has strongly warned the Arab world against “restoring” ties with Israel, saying all effort had to be directed towards preventing the occupying regime from “infiltrating” into the Muslim world.

“The Zionist occupiers are the common enemies of the Muslim world. It is our responsibility to boycott them, expose their crimes, and prevent them from infiltrating the Islamic community,” said Ismail Haniyeh, who heads the Political Bureau of Hamas resistance movement.

“We must work hard to reject and criminalize all plots aimed at restoring ties, be it on political, economic, cultural, academic, or social fronts,” added Haniyeh, who was addressing the 32nd International Islamic Unity Conference in Tehran via video link.

Back-to-back official remarks and media reports have shown that Israel and Arab states, at the head of them Saudi Arabia, have been increasingly gravitating towards one another over the past many years. This is while those were the very states that previously depicted themselves as Tel Aviv’s enemies and supporters of the Palestinian cause.

“Tehran is the capital of a land, which accompanies and is aligned with the Islamic Ummah, especially the Palestinian nation. This conference guarantees the Palestinian nation’s steadfastness,” Haniyeh added.

He added that US President Donald Trump could not forcibly hand the occupied holy city of Jerusalem al-Quds over to the Israelis in the same way that the former British foreign secretary Lord Arthur Balfour was not able to give them even “a palm’s length” of the Palestinian soil.

The Balfour Declaration was a public statement issued by the UK government during World War I, announcing support for the creation of Israel. The declaration was named after Lord Balfour, the then British foreign secretary who penned the document.

Late last year, Trump recognized al-Quds as Israel’s capital, and earlier this year, he transferred the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to the city. Both moves ignited outrage among Palestinians and were followed by stern international warnings.

“This land is entirely ours,” Haniyeh asserted.

He also vowed that the Palestinian resistance would reject the United States’ “deal of the century.”

Haniyeh was referring to a yet-unannounced US plan for the Middle East, which reportedly circumvents many of the Palestinians’ demands.

The Hamas chief added that Muslims had to devise a strategy to confront Israeli plots to Judaize al-Aqsa Mosque.

The regime invariably imposes restrictions on visits by Palestinians to the mosque, while freely allowing Israeli settlers to frequently visit the site accompanied by an armed escort.

Also addressing the conference, the deputy leader of the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah said al-Quds was the pivotal issue of the Islamic world.

Sheikh Na'eem Qasim said the Palestinians could not be divided and they would refuse to give up even one inch of their land.

Iran’s President Rouhani urges Muslim unity against terrorism

Iran’s President Rouhani urges Muslim unity against terrorism
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called on Muslim nations to unite and stand against hostile policies of the US and Israel.

Addressing an annual international conference on Islamic unity in Tehran, Rouhani said Saturday Muslims have no way but to remain united in order to achieve victory over the US and fight its blatant oppression.

"Today, the Muslim world is alone and Muslims should join hands. Relying on outsiders is the biggest historical mistake," he told more than 350 Muslim politicians and scholars from 100 countries attending the conference.

"Today, there is no way for Muslims except unity and solidarity and if we unite we can undoubtedly score a victory against the Zionists and the Americans," he added.

Rouhani said unity and brotherhood among Islamic countries must be assumed as a duty. The Iranian president, however, pointed out that unity could not be achieved through words, stressing that it rather required collective action.

The 32nd International Islamic Unity Conference began in the Iranian capital under the motto "Quds, axis of unity among Ummah," with over 350 foreign guests from 100 countries in attendance.

The event is held annually on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) in a bid to lay the ground for stronger solidarity among Muslims and provide appropriate solutions for their problems.

Rouhani said the people of Iran consider the Saudi people as their "brothers," stressing that Tehran is ready to defend the Saudi nation's interests against terrorism without expecting anything in return.

"We are ready to do our best to defend the interests of the Saudi people against terrorism, aggressors and superpowers like how we went to the help of the people of Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Yemen without expecting any benefits," he noted.

"We will not even request a $450 billion deal from you and will not insult you as we consider you our brothers and view regional nations and the people of Mecca and Medina as our brothers," he said.

The Iranian president was referring to major deals that the US sealed with Riyadh over the past year including arms purchase agreements and others.

Privatizing Zimbabwe’s Railroads Could Be Right Track for Economy

Nyasha Maravanyika, spokesperson National Railways of Zimbabwe says once the company is recapitalized, it will be ready to lead the country’s economic recovery from its base in Bulawayo, Nov. 21, 2018.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa hopes to revive Zimbabwe’s economy by ensuring that state-owned companies stop using tax dollars.

One of those companies is the National Railways of Zimbabwe, which continues to take tax dollars despite several government cash injections.

In the industrial hub of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second biggest city, several industries are closed and unemployment remains high a year after Mnangagwa took power.

In his first address to the nation after wrestling power from Robert Mugabe one year ago, Mnangagwa promised: “Jobs, jobs and jobs.”

Last month, launching the Transitional Stabilization Program to revive Zimbabwe’s economy, Mnangagwa said he wanted all state-owned companies that provided services such as electricity, water and transport, to run efficiently.

The National Railways, with a debt of more than $300 million despite an influx of tax dollars, is one of those expected to turn around. Railways spokesperson Nyasha Maravanyika says that once the company is recapitalized, it will be ready to lead the country’s economic recovery.

“The NRZ (National Railways of Zimbabwe) since 1980 had been a profitable organization until 2001/2002,” Maravanyika said. “That is when we incurred this large debt of over $300 million. We believe that once the NRZ is kicking, once the equipment is recapitalized, the NRZ makes more profits than losses, therefore it will not rely on taxpayers’ money.”

Maravanyika says the railroad’s old equipment, some as much as 100 years old, and mismanagement by the prior administration, are to blame for the losses the organization has been incurring. He says the NRZ is working on getting a cash injection of about $400 million and in about six years should be able to start turning a profit.

Independent economist John Robertson says all parastatals -organizations that serve the state - should be privatized if they are to run efficiently and provide services to Zimbabwe’s economy. He says efforts to bring in investors who want to capitalize the parastatals will not work because they fear the government will not allow them to manage the organizations.

“Privatization is the right mechanism to use, that is, to invite private investors to take over,” Robertson said.

“Government has been reluctant to allow that to happen,” he explained. “They’ve said, we want private investors to come in as partners, not as the people who would now own the enterprise, but government would want to remain in charge, and so they’ve not found many partners willing, on that basis, to come in and to be directed by government when they feel themselves to be the experts in those fields and they do not need that kind of directive from people in government who tend not to be nearly as skilled in those territories as they should be.”

Zimbabwe’s economic crisis has been a major issue for the president. Inflation recently soared to more than 20 percent, its highest level in a decade. When Mnangagwa took office, he promised to improve the long-ailing economy, but some Zimbabweans say little has changed.

US Climate Report Says Disasters Will Get Worse

A firefighter searches for human remains in a trailer park destroyed in the Camp Fire, Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, in Paradise, California.
A U.S. government report says the impacts of climate change, including powerful storms, droughts and wildfires, are worsening in the United States.

The report, written with the help of more than a dozen U.S. government agencies and departments, frequently contradicts the statements and policies of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The congressionally mandated report was quietly issued Friday during a holiday weekend. The White House later dismissed the report as inaccurate, according to a Reuters report.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters told Reuters Friday the report was "largely based on the most extreme scenario, which contradicts long-established trends by assuming that...there would be limited technology and innovation, and a rapidly expanding population."

The National Climate Assessment, totaling more than 1,000 pages, warned of more powerful and longer weather disasters triggered at least, in part, by global warming.

It said such weather disasters are becoming more commonplace around the country and warned that without aggressive action they could become much worse.

While the report avoids policy recommendations, it said humans must take measures to stop future weather disasters "to avoid substantial damages to the U.S. economy, environment, and human health and well-being over the coming decades."

"Future risks from climate change depend primarily on decisions made today," the report said.

It predicted that climate change will cost the U.S. economy hundreds of billions of dollars by the end of the century if no efforts are made to curb its effects and said global warming would disproportionately hurt the poor.

This year's National Climate Assessment is the fourth time the U.S. government has issued a comprehensive look at climate change and is the first assessment to take place during the Trump administration. The last report came in 2014.

11 Thirteen government departments and agencies, including the Department of Agriculture and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), were part of a committee of more than 300 researchers who compiled the assessment.

Several people involved in the report told The Washington Post that its release originally had been planned for early December. However, they said after a behind-the-scenes debate about when to make it public, administration officials settled on the Friday after Thanksgiving, traditionally one of the slowest news days of the year.

During a press conference Friday, authors of the report said there had been "no external interference" in the assessment. Report director David Reidmiller said questions about the timing of the release were "relevant," but said the contents of the report were more important.

The Trump administration has rolled back several environmental regulations put in place during former President Barack Obama's administration and has promoted the production of fossil fuels.

Last year, Trump announced his intention to withdraw the United States from the 2015 Paris Agreement, which had been signed by nearly 200 nations to combat climate change. He argued the agreement would hurt the U.S. economy and said there is little evidence in its environmental benefit.

Trump, as well as several members of his Cabinet, have also cast doubt on the science of climate change, saying the causes of global warming are not yet settled.

Friday's report cites other climate studies, which say that humans have caused more than 90 percent of the current global warming.

US urging allies to shun Huawei

US urging allies to shun Huawei
The United States is trying to persuade wireless companies and internet providers in allied countries to shun equipment made by Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, citing cyber security risks, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

The lobbying campaign, also targeting government officials, is taking place in allied countries where  equipment is widely in use such as Germany, Italy and Japan, the Journal reported, quoting people familiar with the situation.

The US is also mulling more financial aid for telecoms development in countries that avoid using Chinese-made equipment, some of these people say, according to the Journal.

Huawei -- one of the world’s largest telecommunications equipment and services providers -- has been under scrutiny in some countries, including the United States and Australia, over its alleged close links to Beijing.

Huawei has long refuted accusations of security risks and links to the Chinese state intelligence services.

One US worry is over the use of Chinese telecom equipment in countries with US military bases, according to people familiar with the matter, such as Germany, Italy and Japan, the newspaper said.

Ecuador Says It Needs $550M to Help Venezuelan Migrants

Ecuador Says It Needs $550M to Help Venezuelan Migrants
Ecuador needs $550 million to provide aid to Venezuelan citizens fleeing their country's economic crisis, and it hopes to raise the funds through donations from multilateral agencies and nearby countries, an Ecuadorian official said Friday.

Delegations from a dozen Latin American countries met in Quito on Thursday and Friday to coordinate plans to deal with the Venezuelan migration crisis, which is overwhelming social services agencies throughout South America.

"We have quantified Ecuador's medium- and long-term needs at around $550 million," Santiago Chavez, deputy minister of human mobility, told reporters. "This has to do with health, education, housing and employment needs."

Ecuador estimates that 600,000 Venezuelan citizens have entered the country in 2018 via the Colombian border, most of whom continue toward Peru.

Ecuador is seeking to guarantee the migrants' human rights and ensure an orderly transition to their new surroundings, Chavez added.

Ecuador's government also hopes to obtain resources from regional multilateral organizations and may seek to create a fund financed by countries in the region, he said, adding that it has arranged a meeting in Quito on Nov. 30 that is to include the United States, Canada, Japan, Qatar and the European Union.

The United Nations says around 3 million people have left Venezuela since 2015, fleeing the hyperinflationary collapse that has left millions unable to obtain basic food or medicine.

“I will go if the Government of India allows me to go. It will be a great honour to be a part of history. There will not be a happier moment than the time when my turban touches the ground where Guru Nanak Dev once walked. It was an unfulfilled wish of my parents,” Sidhu added.

When asked if he will attend the ceremony on the Indian side of the border on November 26, the Indian Punjab local bodies minister said, “I will certainly go if I am invited.”

In an earlier tweet, the Sidhu welcomed his government’s decision to accept Pakistan’s proposal to build the Kartarpur corridor saying it will “burn animosity” between the countries.

"I welcome this auspicious step by the Union Cabinet, it will be a cup of joy for 12 crore 'Nanak Naam Laivas'. It will build bridges, burn animosity and will act like a soothing balm for two neighbouring countries," he tweeted.

The Gurdwara Kartarpur Darbar Sahib in Narowal in Pakistan's Punjab province holds religious significance for the Sikh community. It is where Baba Guru Nanak settled down after his travels as a missionary. He lived there for 18 years until his death in 1539.
