U.S. president Trump tests negative for coronavirus

U.S. President Donald Trump
U.S. President Donald Trump tested negative for the coronavirus, his doctor said on Saturday, as the U.S. president extended a travel ban to Britain and Ireland to try to slow the spread of a pandemic that has shut down much of the daily routine of American life.

After White House officials took the unprecedented step of checking the temperatures of journalists entering the briefing room, Trump told reporters he took a test for the virus on Friday night. On Saturday evening, his physician, Sean Conley, said the results were negative.

The U.S. president met with a Brazilian delegation last week, at least one member of which has since tested positive.Trump said Americans should reconsider non-essential travel, and that his administration was also considering domestic travel restrictions.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the country has recorded 2,226 cases of the new coronavirus but has not yet reached the peak of the outbreak.

“This will get worse before it gets better,” Surgeon General Jerome Adams said at the briefing. But, he added, “99% of people will recover and people need to know that.”

Critics have accused Trump of focusing too much on markets, which on Friday saw the three major Wall Street indexes gain more than 9% after having had their worst day since 1987 on Thursday.

All three indexes were nevertheless down at least 8% for the week and about 20% below mid-February record highs.

At the briefing, Trump told reporters he was “honored to see that the stock market set a record in a short period of time over a 45-minute period.” He called it an “all-time record” that he hoped would be repeated daily.

“They said, ‘Sir, you just set a record in the history of the stock market. That was pretty good. Those great companies that were there, they couldn’t have been too unhappy about it ... They are all big, publicly listed companies, so they did a good job,” he said before turning the microphone over to Vice President Mike Pence, who is running the White House’s response to the outbreak.

Pence said the administration was extending to Britain and Ireland travel restrictions that were first imposed on China and expanded this week to continental Europe.

Trump spoke to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday about the new restrictions, the White House said.

Multiple rockets hit Iraq's Taji base for second time in a week

Multiple rockets hit Iraq's Taji base for second time in a week
Several Iraqi air defense servicemen were critically wounded on Saturday as multiple rockets hit a military base which houses U.S.-led coalition troops, in the second such strike in a week, the Iraqi military said.

The U.S.-led coalition said three of its troops and two Iraqi soldiers were wounded in the attack.

Iraq’s Joint Operations Command said 33 Katyusha rockets were launched near a section of the Taji base which houses coalition troops. It said the military found seven rocket launchers and 24 unused rockets in the nearby Abu Izam area.

The military said it would arrest those responsible.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack which, unlike recent similar attacks, took place in daylight hours.

An Iraqi colonel inside the base had earlier told Reuters he heard rockets hit the site and sirens blaring.

A similar rocket attack on Wednesday on Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, killed two U.S. troops and a British soldier, prompting Washington to launch retaliatory air strikes on Thursday which killed six Iraqis.

The Iraqi military said on Saturday that neither the United States nor other foreign forces should use the latest attack as a pretext to take military action without Iraq’s approval, and should instead hasten to implement a parliamentary resolution expelling them.

Iraq condemned the U.S. air strikes on Friday, saying they were a violation of its sovereignty and targeted aggression against its regular armed forces.

Longstanding antagonism between the United States and Iran has mostly played out on Iraqi soil in recent months.

Caffeine affected convergent thinking but not divergent thinking

Caffeine affected convergent thinking but not divergent thinking
Morning cup of coffee can increase ability to focus and problem-solve, but it probably has no significant impact on creativity.

In the research, 80 participants were given either a 200-milligram caffeine pill, which is equivalent to one cup of strong coffee, or a placebo.

The stimulant’s effects on convergent (problem-solving) and divergent (idea-generating) thinking, working memory, and mood were tested.

Caffeine affected convergent thinking but not divergent thinking, the researchers reported.

It was surprising to Andy De Santis, a registered dietitian and weight loss specialist.

Caffeine can offer enhanced attention and focus, there is much less convincing evidence it’s going to make you better at making tough decisions or carrying out more complex tasks.”

“For me, based on what I’ve seen previously, it’s unsurprising that creativity falls into that second category, and that’s not to say this study definitively closes the book on caffeine and creativity either,” De Santis added.

Be cautious with caffeine

The study was conducted with the equivalent of just one cup of strongly brewed coffee.

Healthline spoke with experts to determine whether a certain amount of caffeine in the diet starts having an inverse impact.

“Yes, absolutely,” says De Santis.

“There is something known as the Yerkes-Dodson law, which essentially says that a relationship exists between stimulation and performance.”

The relationship is one of diminishing returns. Here’s how it works.

“So caffeine, obviously, offers stimulation,” De Santis said. “In turn, that stimulation has the potential to enhance an individual’s work or exercise performance, especially if fatigue is causing a performance detriment.”

“But that relationship only works up to a certain critical point, beyond which overstimulation (i.e., too much caffeine) actually detracts from our performance by making it harder to focus,” he explained.

Everyone’s different

“This one actually depends a lot on genetics. For example, some people are fast metabolizers of caffeine, while others are slow.”

“The determining factor lies in the CYP1A2 gene that has been studied extensively, for slow metabolizers, excess caffeine can be deadly.”

You know your body best, so listen to what it’s saying.

“Most of us know how we react to caffeine,” said Kirkpatrick. “Some of my patients have six-plus cups a day, while others can’t have more than one cup of coffee.”

However, if you tolerate caffeine and use it as a performance enhancement, De Santis says it’s probably OK to drink a larger amount of coffee.

“There is no evidence to suggest caffeine inhibits creativity, so I’m not sure we need to make too much of it,” he said.

Broadway shows have shut down, while many TV shows have suspended filming.

Theme parks have also been affected with Disneyland shutting down all of its attractions.

Here's a round-up of some of the latest entertainment events to announce delays or cancellations:

Until Thursday evening, Disney appeared to be holding firm with the March release, and proceeded with a scaled-back premiere of the film in London.

But shortly after the cast posed for pictures on the red carpet, Disney announced the film was being delayed.

Director Niki Caro said: "We are so excited to share this film with the world, but given the current ever-shifting circumstances we are all experiencing, unfortunately, we have to postpone the worldwide release of Mulan for now."

Fast and Furious 9 put back by 11 months

Coronavirus puts film industry in ‘turmoil’

Horror films The New Mutants and Antlers were also pushed back, but Disney said it was still aiming for a 2020 release date for all three films.

The release of The Secret Garden, which will star Colin Firth and Julie Walters, has been delayed from April to August.

The Tribeca Film Festival, which had been due to take place in New York in April, has been postponed.

Several US talk shows, which had already announced they would stop filming in front of live audience, have now been pulled from the schedules altogether.

However, all three are planning to return to a normal taping schedule on 30 March, their respective networks said.

Several LA-based shows, such as Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Late Late Show with James Corden are continuing for now, but without studio audiences.

America's Got Talent stopped filming with live audiences, while some shows such as The Price Is Right suspended production for two weeks.

In addition to live talk shows, several dramas and comedies currently in production suspended filming, including NCIS, The Good Fight and Apple's The Morning Show, which stars Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

In the US, all Broadway theatres, which make up New York's largest tourist industry, announced closures until 12 April, the city's governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Thursday.

Disneyland announced it was closing its doors at its resorts in both Florida and Paris, while the Disney Cruise Line will suspend all new departures until the end of the month.

However, one event will proceed as planned - the Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies.

In the music world, live concerts have also been largely postponed

The world's two largest live-entertainment companies, AEG and Live Nation, along with several major agencies, have announced that they are suspending tours for the rest of March.

Tours affected include Billie Eilish, Cher, Kiss, Post Malone, Chris Stapleton and many others.

However, most of the music shows affected so far are arena shows, and some events with smaller audiences are still scheduled to go ahead.

Record Store Day is another event affected, with organisers announcing on Friday it had been put back from 18 April to 20 June.

Apple's WWDC 2020 to be online-only this year
Apple's biggest events of the year is going online only, amid concerns about the novel coronavirus that's been labeled a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Apple said its new online Worldwide Developers Conference will allow it to connect with "millions of developers."

"The current health situation has required that we create a new WWDC 2020 format that delivers a full program with an online keynote and sessions, offering a great learning experience for our entire developer community, all around the world.

'Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said in a statement. Apple counts 23 million registered developers in more than 155 countries.

"We will be sharing all of the details in the weeks ahead," Schiller added. The event typically takes place in early June, but Apple hasn't yet announced exact dates for WWDC 2020.

Apple is just the latest in a string of companies shifting or canceling events as the coronavirus has spread around the world. Large organizations too have scuttled their plans, including the annual SXSW music and tech festival in Texas, the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Even Disneyland shut down.

Apple typically uses its WWDC to announce new iOS software with expanded features for its iPhones and iPads, usually released alongside new smartphones in the fall.

It also often announces new Mac software, and sometimes devices like the $5,999 Mac Pro desktop and $4,999 Apple Pro Display XDR, both unveiled at last year's event.

Apple said it will commit $1 million to local San Jose organizations to offset revenue lost from moving to the online-only format this year.

Coronavirus Fear: U.S declares national emergency as virus spreads

U.S. President Donald Trump
President Donald Trump declared U.S. national emergency over the quickly spreading coronavirus on Friday, opening the door to more government aid to combat a pathogen that has infected more than 138,000 people worldwide and left over 5,000 dead.

The impact of the coronavirus on everyday life deepened around the world. It was detected for the first time in several countries, with the World Health Organization (WHO) calling Europe the pandemic’s current epicenter.

More schools and businesses closed, the global sporting calendar was left in tatters, and people faced greater restrictions on where they could go.

“To unleash the full power of the federal government to this effort today, I am officially declaring a national emergency - two very big words,” Trump said in remarks at the White House Rose Garden, adding that the U.S. situation could worsen and “the next eight weeks are critical.”

Trump, whose action makes available $50 billion in federal aid to states and localities, had faced criticism from some experts for being slow and ineffective in his response to the crisis and playing down the threat.

The latest steps came two days after Trump announced travel restrictions blocking U.S. entry for most people from continental Europe. While Britain was among the countries exempted, Trump said on Friday that might change because infections there had risen “precipitously.”

The president, who was photographed last Saturday at his private Florida club with a Brazilian official who has tested positive for the coronavirus, said he himself likely would be tested “fairly soon,” a reversal of his previous stance. But Trump, 73, said he did not plan to isolate himself, noting he was suffering no symptoms.

Travel bans have hammered airlines and travel companies worldwide, while financial markets have been hit by panic selling this week.

The three major U.S. stock indexes rallied more than 9% on Friday, rebounding from Wall Street’s biggest daily drop since 1987. But the indexes were still about 20% below record highs hit in mid-February.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Europe now had more reported cases and deaths than the rest of world combined, apart from China, where the coronavirus originated but where new cases have slowed to a trickle. The WHO called the death toll reaching 5,000 globally “a tragic milestone.”

The WHO’s top emergency expert, Mike Ryan, said social distancing was a “tried and tested method” to slow the spread of a virus but “not a panacea” that would stop transmission.

“Blanket travel measures in their own right will do nothing to protect an individual state,” Ryan said.

Plant trees save our Planet

landscape view of jungle
The government of United Kingdom has pledged to plant millions a year while other countries have schemes running into billions.

Last year's UK general election became a contest to look green.

The Conservatives' pledge of planting 30 million trees a year, confirmed in the Budget this week, is a big step up on current rates. Critics wonder whether it's possible given that earlier targets were far easier and weren't met.

If the new planting rate is achieved, it would lead to something like 17% of the UK becoming forested, as opposed to 13% now.

Tree planting is a popular idea because forests are not only beautiful but also useful: they support wildlife, help with holding back floodwater and provide timber.

And trees absorb carbon dioxide - the main gas heating the planet - so planting more of them is seen by many as a climate change solution.

At the moment, the UK's forests pull in about 10 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year but the hope is to more than double that.

It would involve potentially sensitive decisions about where to turn fields into forests: for example, should trees be planted where crops are grown or where cattle or sheep are grazed?

And because it can take decades to get a financial return from trees, many farmers and landowners are waiting for the government to announce new incentives.

There are machines that can do the job and even drones but people power is the tried and tested method. And good money can be earned about 7p for every tree.

For years, it's been popular among students in Canada as a summer.

To start this you'll need enough trained staff in Britain to support the government's plans for a huge increase in planting.

"You need to have the workforce to hit those numbers, which at the moment UK don't have,".Can trees stop climate change?
The answer is more complicated than you might think.

Trees use carbon dioxide as part of the process of photosynthesis with the carbon ending up in the branches, trunk and roots. But at the same time they rely on respiration, which releases some carbon dioxide.

That's why, over the years, people have described trees as "breathing" - inhaling and exhaling a flow of gases. And it turns out that understanding exactly how that flow works is extremely hard.

Prof Rob MacKenzie, of the University of Birmingham, is honest about the lack of knowledge.

"There are lots of things we don't know about the precise movement of carbon."Can trees stop climate change?
The answer is more complicated than you might think.

Trees use carbon dioxide as part of the process of photosynthesis - with the carbon ending up in the branches, trunk and roots. But at the same time they rely on respiration, which releases some carbon dioxide.

That's why, over the years, people have described trees as "breathing" - inhaling and exhaling a flow of gases..

Research so far has shown that every square metre draws in about 1,700g of CO2 every year - while also releasing up to 1,200g.

And as a forest gets older, those flows are likely to become more balanced. Prof MacKenzie says it would be a "disaster" if governments and companies rely on forests to "clear up the mess" of carbon pollution.

And he paints a grim picture of what could go wrong. "We plant lot of trees, we think we've done the job, we forget about them, and what we're left with is a really desolate dying diseased landscape that no one cares about."

Solutions

Partly, they involve choosing the right trees and partly it's about making sure that local people benefit.

In the sprawling forest of Thetford, in Norfolk, much of it planted in a rush after the First World War, Eleanor Tew has researched the best options.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, a government-encouraged rash of planting ended up with regimented rows of the same species of conifers - which meant they were susceptible to the same pests and diseases.

Nathalie Seddon, professor of biodiversity at the University of Oxford, it's vital that forestry schemes, particularly in developing countries, aren't imposed on the people there, but instead involve them.

By contrast, a forestry scheme in northwest China successfully protected people living there from dust storms - a positive development - but the growth of the trees then led to water shortages in villages downstream.

She says: "There is an idea that you can just buy land and plant trees but that's too simplistic - there is a risk of doing more harm than good."

Corona Virus: South Korea reports 107 new cases

Corona Virus: South Korea reports 107 new cases
South Korea reported more recoveries from the coronavirus than new infections on Saturday for the second day in a row, as a downward trend in daily cases raised hopes that Asia’s biggest epidemic outside China may be slowing.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) recorded 107 new coronavirus cases on Saturday compared with 110 a day earlier, taking the national tally to 8,086. In contrast, 204 patients were released from hospitals where they had been isolated for treatment.
For the second day in a row, the daily number of recovered people exceeded that of new confirmed cases since South Korea’s first patient was confirmed on January 20.

With the latest figures, South Korea has continued to see a steady drop in the number of new cases, raising hopes that the outbreak may be slowing in Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

Officials, however, urged to stay vigilant as the emergence of clusters of infection in the capital Seoul and metropolitan areas continues.

“It’s the weekend, and we understand that you feel frustrated, but please stay at home and avoid contacting with other people as much as possible,” a health ministry official told a briefing.

Of the latest 107 cases, 62 were from the hard-hit southeastern city of Daegu where a fringe Christian church at the centre of the epidemic is located, while 15 and 13 were in Gyeonggi and Seoul, respectively. Daegu and Gyeongbuk province has seen a drop in new case numbers.

Coronavirus: PIA, CAA start implementation on NSC’s decisions

PIA and CAA start implementation on NSC’s decisions
The ban on international flight operations from other than three major airports across the country including Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad has come into effect on Saturday as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) conveyed the directives to all national and international airlines.

It is pertinent to mention here that a National Security Council (NSC) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan decided to limit international flight operations to three major airports of the country aimed at tackling the spread of coronavirus, whose 28 cases have been reported in the country by Friday.

A notice to airmen (NOTAM) issued from the aviation authority to national and international airlines said that the international flight operations will only remain operational from the three airports in the country.

The international operations will remain suspended at five major airports across the country including those in Peshawar, Faisalabad, Quetta, Sialkot and Multan.

“Domestic flights will, however, remain operational at all airports across the country,” it said adding that the decisions were taken to control coronavirus outbreak.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced to operate international flights from the Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad airports as per the decision made during the NSC meeting.

“The flight operations will continue as per routine tonight [Friday] and a change in the schedule will be notified soon,” said a spokesman of the national flag carrier.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and airlines’ officials in Lahore have started preparing a feasibility report to implement government directives taken at the NSC meeting.

According to sources, the aviation authorities have started mulling over a plan to divert all international air traffic from Sialkot, Faisalabad and Multan airport to Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore.

“The Lahore airport administration has started evaluating its capacity to deal with the situation as soon as it was conveyed from the CAA headquarters to reroute the flight operations,” they said.

The airlines have also started to prepare their feasibility to continue flight operations from the Lahore airport. “A flight operation schedule will soon be issued after evaluating all resources from the airlines,” they said.

Meanwhile, the aviation authority has also barred pilots, inspectors, examiners for OPC and PPC from visiting abroad with immediate effect till further orders in the wake of coronavirus spread.

The notification is conveyed to all national and international airlines, flying clubs and others.

PSL 2020: Multan Sultans defeat Peshawar Zalmi by 3 runs

Multan Sultans defeat Peshawar Zalmi by 3 runs
The Multan Sultans on Friday defeated the Peshawar Zalmi by 3 runs to win their Pakistan Super League (2020) clash on Friday at the National Stadium in Karachi.

Hammad Azam and Adil Amin were unable to see Peshawar Zalmi to victory even after two no-balls were bowled in the last over and it looked as if Zalmi would snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Zalmi were rattled with an early setback when right-handed opener Kamran Akmal, who has been dangerous throughout the tournament, fell cheaply for 2 from 7 balls. He was clean bowled by Mohammad Irfan.

Wahab Riaz tried his hand at batting up the order but the move did not prove beneficial. He was sent to the pavilion after he scored only 3 runs off 7 balls, caught by Moeen Ali off a Sohail Tanvir delivery.

Umar Amin and Imam-ul-Haq put up a solid partnership. The former scored 29 from 23 balls, hitting four 4s while the latter scored 56 from 41 balls, hitting two 6s and four 4s before he was dismissed. His wicket was also picked up by Sohail Tanvir.

Shoaib Malik pitched in with a much-needed 30 runs off 25 balls, hitting two 6s and a four before Shahid Afridi caught him out off an Ali Shafaq delivery.

Haider Ali, who has earned the critics' nod after a string of impressive performances throughout PSL 2020, fell cheaply to Ali Shafaq. He was caught by Moeen Ali, scoring only 1 run off 4 balls.

Earlier, the Multan Sultans handed "The Yellow Storm" 155 runs to win after finishing at 154/6 from their 20 overs. Zeeshan Ashraf was the pick of the batsmen for the Sultans as he scored 52 off 39 balls, hitting seven 4s and a 6 before he was dismissed by Rahat Ali.

Skipper Shan Masood scored 28 off 23 balls, hitting three boundaries before he was dismissed by Hassan Ali, caught by Umar Yamin.

Khushdil Shah scored a quickfire 30 off 20 balls, hitting two huge sixes to give some stability to the side after Moeen Ali and Ravi Bopara earlier for 0 and 5 respectively.

Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi was sent to the pavilion after he made 19 runs from 13 balls, hitting a six and a four each. He was caught by Umar Yamin off a Wahab Riaz delivery.

Rahat Ali's performance with the ball stood out as he picked up three important wickets to finish up with figures of 3/24 from his four overs. Mohammad Amir Khan, Hassan Ali and Wahab Riaz each picked up a wicket to restrict the Sultans to 154/6.

PML-N suspends membership of 6 lawmakers for 'expressing confidence' in Punjab CM

PML-N suspends membership of 6 lawmakers for 'expressing confidence' in Punjab CM
The PML-N on Friday suspended the party membership of six Punjab Assembly lawmakers and issued show cause notices to them for "violating party discipline and contravening rules" by meeting Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar and "expressing confidence in the prime minister's and the CM's leadership".

The notices were issued to Azhar Abbas (PP-269, Muzaffargarh), Muhammad Arshad (PP-244, Bahawalnagar), Muhammad Faisal Khan Niazi (PP-209, Khanewal), Choudhry Ashraf Ali (PP-57, Gujranwala), Abu Hafas Ghayasuddin (PP-47, Narowal) and Nishat Ahmed Daha (PP-206, Khanewal).

On March 10, the six lawmakers, along with one Punjab Assembly lawmaker from the PPP, had called on the Punjab chief minister.

A press release issued by the CM’s office had said that former MNA Tahir Bashir Cheema had also accompanied the MPAs, who “reposed their complete trust in the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan and Buzdar and announced continuing lending their unconditional support to the government.”

According to the notices issued today, signed by PML-N Punjab General Secretary Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, a “press release in electronic and print media on March 10 showed [the lawmakers] meeting Buzdar”.

“In the past, a meeting with the prime minister, who is also the chairman of the PTI, was also held without any legal/moral justification or prior intimation.”

It added that the above information had not been denied by the lawmakers in the media.

“Hence, your basic party memberships have been suspended forthwith and you are hereby directed to show cause as to why the violations were committed,” the notice said.

It directed the lawmakers to submit a reply in this regard within the next seven days, adding that a failure to do so would result in legal action being initiated against them.

Egypt says nearly 20 killed in freak bad weather

Egypt says nearly 20 killed in freak bad weather
Nearly 20 people have been killed in some of the worst storms to hit Egypt in decades, the country’s prime minister said in a statement on Friday.

The North African country has been battered by heavy rain and strong winds that began in the earlier hours of Thursday and continued on Friday.

“Egypt has not experienced such weather conditions for nearly 35 or 40 years,” Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said. “These weather conditions resulted in about 20 deaths across the country.”

Traffic, trains, ports and flights were affected.

Thirteen people were injured on Thursday when two passenger trains collided in Cairo because of the weather, the government said. Local media reported several deaths because of electric shocks, partial collapse of buildings or road accidents over Thursday and Friday.

Videos and pictures of flooded Cairo streets were circulated widely on social media, with criticism of‮ ‬the government over poor infrastructure. Many complained of long power and water outages and inadequate drainage.

Government supporters says the administration of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has inherited mistakes of successive governments stretching back decades and is working to improve infrastructure and develop services.

Merkel says coronavirus situation more extraordinary than banking crisis

Chancellor Angela Merkel
The coronavirus crisis is proving more of an extraordinary situation than the banking crisis, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday, adding that her government’s focus now was not how its budget works out.

Speaking after meeting the leaders of Germany’s 16 states, Merkel said her finance and economy ministers would present a “very comprehensive” package of additional measures to support German businesses on Friday.

Asked about Germany’s self-imposed policy pledge of not taking on new debt, Merkel said the budget was not her government’s main focus, underlining her message from a day earlier that the public finances were secondary.

“The debt brake ... provides for exceptions in extraordinary situations - and that is, as I said yesterday, really not our topic as to how the budget balance will look in the end,” Merkel told a news conference.

Under the German debt brake rule, the federal government can take on new debt of up to 0.35% of economic output. France has been using the coronavirus crisis to push for more public spending by Germany and other countries with fiscal leeway.

“We are in a situation that is unusual in every respect and I would say more unusual than at the time of the banking crisis because we are dealing with a health problem, a health challenge for which scientists and medicine does not yet have an answer,” Merkel said.

“So it is our task first of all to save people’s lives, as best we can, and secondly to keep economic activity going.”

Merkel said that for regions suffering a dynamic outbreak of coronavirus “the temporary closure of nurseries and schools, for example by bringing forward the Easter holidays, is another option.”

Urging people to avoid social contact where possible, Merkel said the federal and state governments called for events with fewer than 1,000 participants not to go ahead. Previously, it had urged a halt to public gatherings with more than 1,000.

China does not rule out US role in coronavirus outbreak

Geng Shuang, the ministry spokesman
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has not ruled out the possibility that the United States was to blame for the spread of the new coronavirus in the Asian country.

Geng Shuang, the ministry spokesman, sidestepped questions on Friday about whether Beijing viewed Washington as responsible for the deadly virus outbreak in China, a day after another spokesman suggested the US army could have engineered it.

Speaking at a news conference in the Chinese capital, Geng refused to directly comment when asked whether his colleague Zhao Lijian's comments were consistent with Beijing's official stance on the virus.

"In fact, the international community, including people within the US, have different opinions about the origin of the virus,” Geng told reporters at the presser.

“As I have been saying for a few days, China has always seen this as a matter of science, and scientific and professional opinions must be heard.”

Geng went on to say, "You're very interested to know if Zhao Lijian's views represent the views of the Chinese government."

"I believe that perhaps you would be better off first asking whether or not recent comments from a number of senior US officials attacking or smearing China represent the US government's position."

In a strongly-worded tweet, written in English, Zhao blasted the US on Thursday for what he called lack of transparency in official reports regarding the coronavirus outbreak in the US.

He suggested that the US military might have brought the new coronavirus to the Chinese city of Wuhan, the birthplace of the current global pandemic.

“When did patient zero begin in US? How many people are infected? What are the names of the hospitals? It might be US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! US owe us an explanation!” Zhao wrote.

The Chinese government had been criticized by Western media and particularly by US officials for what was alleged to be a slow response to the outbreak and of not being sufficiently transparent.

Beijing has, however, been taking strict measures since the outbreak began, including locking down Wuhan, a city of roughly 11 million people, which appears to have paid off.

The COVID-19 disease, caused by the new coronavirus, emerged in the provincial capital of Hubei late last year and is currently affecting 131 countries and territories across the globe. It has so far infected over 137,000 people and killed more than 5,000 others.

The World Health Organization has declared the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic.

All educational institutions in Pakistan to remain closed till April 5: NSC

meeting of the National Security Committee
The government has decided to keep all educational institutions in the country closed till April 5 as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of novel coronavirus.

The decision was taken by the country’s top civil and military leadership at a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC), presided over PM Imran Khan in Islamabad on Friday, Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood announced through his official Twitter handle.

“This includes all schools and universities, public and private, vocational institutions and madaris,” he wrote on Twitter.

The situation, he added, would be reviewed the Ministry of Education March 27 to devise the future course of action.

Prime Minister Imran Khan chaired the meeting, called to hammer out a strategy to deal with coronavirus as the army chief ordered his top commanders to gear up “in support of a national effort” to counter the pathogen.

Services chiefs including Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lt-Gen Faiz Hameed apart from chief ministers, top advisers and cabinet ministers attended the meeting of top consultative body.

“The government has convened the NSC meeting to review the situation arising out of coronavirus in the country. The government was already on alert to prevent the disease,” the prime minister had announced on Thursday while addressing a parliamentary party meeting of the ruling PTI.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the outbreak a pandemic.

The NSC meeting was announced as the country confirmed its 21st novel coronavirus case in Sindh while Punjab – the country’s most populous province – declared a “health emergency” to deal with the contagious disease.

According to Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood, the NSC was to decide the kind of measures to be taken to deal with the situation including “refraining people from participating in public gathering”.

Earlier on Thursday, the 230th Corps Commanders’ Conference – chaired by Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa at the General Headquarters – discussed among other things the contagion – also called COVID-19.

“The forum also discussed emerging situation with regards to the coronavirus and preventive measures taken at the military level. The COAS directed all concerned to gear up preparations in support of national effort to counter this pandemic in case of any eventuality,” said a statement issued by the military’s media wing.

Meanwhile, the federal government has established 35 isolation wards all over the country to cater to COVID-19 pandemic.

The tally for confirmed COVID-19 cases in Pakistan stood at 21 with 15 cases in Sindh, five in Gilgit-Baltistan and one in Balochistan on Friday.

At least 110 have been tested in Punjab, 251 in Sindh, 30 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 18 in Balochistan, nine in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and 32 in Galgit-Baltistan.

So far Punjab, K-P, AJK and federal territories have not reported any confirmed case of the novel coronavirus.

IPL 2020 postponed due to coronavirus outbreak

IPL 2020 postponed due to coronavirus outbreak
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced to postpone start of Indian Premier League until April 15 as a precautionary measure against the spread of the coronavirus.

It had been scheduled to begin on March 29.

The Indian government said late on Wednesday it would cancel almost all visas issued for travel to India until April 15 to try to prevent the spread of the virus, and the country's sports secretary said on Thursday the national cricket team's coming matches should be played in empty stadiums.

"The Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to suspend IPL 2020 till 15th April 2020, as a precautionary measure against the ongoing Novel Corona Virus (COVID-19) situation," the board said in a statement.

"The BCCI is concerned and sensitive about all its stakeholders, and public health in general, and it is taking all necessary steps to ensure that, all people related to IPL including fans have a safe cricketing experience."

More than 134,500 people have been infected globally and more than 4,900 have died because of the flu-like virus, according to a Reuters tally of government announcements. Sport events have been either cancelled or postponed globally in recent weeks.

India's national cricket team is locked in a three-match one-day international series against South Africa, the first of which was washed out due to rain in the northern Indian city of Dharamsala on Thursday.

The BCCI said the remaining two matches - at Lucknow and Kolkata - would be played without the presence of crowd.

The 13th season of the eight-team IPL had been scheduled to start with a match between defending champions Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

The cash-rich IPL, featuring celebrity owners and top business houses, draws the world's top cricketers. As per the previous schedule, the franchise-based competition was set to run for seven weeks with the final on May 17.

The IPL's brand value has soared over the years since its 2008 launch and grew to an estimated $6.8 billion in 2019, according to New York-based corporate finance advisory firm Duff & Phelps.

Karachi Kings’ Alex Hales, Peshawar Zalmi’s Tom Banton, Carlos Braithwaite, Lewis Gregory, James Foster (coach), Liam Dawson and Liam Livingstone are the following players to leave Pakistan.

It must be noted that England players requested a return to their respective country which was accepted by the PCB. Local players have also the right to withdraw themselves if they don’t want to play.

Last night, PCB decided no crowd will be allowed to in the remaining matches of the PSL at National Stadium in Karachi.

The decision was taken on special directives of Sindh’s Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali as more cases of Coronavirus have been reported in the last couple of days.

Coronavirus: World stocks set for worst week since 2008 financial crisis

World stocks set for worst week since 2008 financial crisis
World stocks were set on Friday for their worst week since the 2008 financial crisis, with coronavirus panic-selling hitting nearly every asset class and investors fretting that central bank action may not be enough to soothe the pain.

European stock markets were slightly higher on Friday on hopes governments will step up spending, but only after several sessions of sustained, heavy losses as investors faced the possibility of a global recession that could be prolonged.

Warning signs still flashed, with Italian government bonds tanking again on Friday morning, after suffering their worst day in nine years in the previous session.

Italy and Spain meanwhile imposed trading curbs, banning short-selling of dozens of stocks, to stem a market rout triggered by the coronavirus outbreak that saw European stock exchanges post their worst-ever losses on Thursday.

The MSCI world equity index .MIWD00000PUS, which tracks shares in 49 countries, hit a three-year low in Asian hours and is down 16% this week so far — its worst run since October 2008 when Lehman Brothers’ collapse triggered the global crisis.

“Markets are quite prepared for a period of falling output. The real fear is that you get second-round effects that result in a nastier, longer recession in the global economy,” said Investec economist Philip Shaw.

“That is going to be very difficult to escape from given the monetary pedal is very close to the floor in many jurisdictions.”

MSCI’s main European Index .MSER was up 2.7% at the open, after having fallen more than 20% over the past week.

Earlier, Japan's Nikkei .N225 fell 10% before paring losses to close 6% lower. Australia's S&P/ASX200 had its wildest trading day on record, falling past 8% before surging in the last minutes of trade to settle 4.4% higher at the close.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS wobbled 0.1% higher by late afternoon after falling more than 5% in morning trade.

The slight recovery came as central banks from the United States to Australia pumped liquidity into their financial systems and as hopes grew that U.S. Democrats and Republicans could pass a stimulus package on Friday.
