Interpol Rejects Pakistan’s Request To Issue Red Warrants Against Hussain Nawaz

Interpol Rejects Pakistan’s Request To Issue Red Warrants Against Hussain Nawaz
Interpol on Saturday has refused to issue red warrants for the arrest of Hussain Nawaz on the application submitted by Pakistani government.

As per details, a five-member commission of the Interpol reviewed the application submitted by the Pakistani government to issue red warrants for the arrest of Hussain Nawaz. The commission, however, rejected the application which caused a major blow to the efforts of Pakitan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) led government against the family of former Premier Nawaz in an ongoing probe against corruption allegations.

The Interpol has also made it clear to the Pakistani government that the submitted shreds of evidence are insufficient to hear so the application is rejected by the commission. A detailed verdict on 11 pages has also been issued by the Interpol.

Earlier, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has pleaded the Interpol to issue red warrants for the arrest of the former premier’s son Hussain Nawaz.

The application also consisted background of the previous verdicts against Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt (R) Safdar.

Who was first to launch 5G? Depends who you ask

They made their assertion on the basis that the new network connected to an actual 5G phone
When it comes to who triumphed in the multi-billion dollar global race to launch the world’s first 5G next generation wireless network, the winner is clear ... depending on who you ask.

Early Wednesday in South Korea, Reuters published a story quoting South Korean officials declaring victory over the United States and China as the site of the world’s first commercial launch of a fifth generation telecoms network.

They made their assertion on the basis that the new network connected to an actual 5G phone. s carriers disputed South Korea’s claims to be first.

After the piece was published, AT&T Inc and Verizon Communications Inc intensified their angry rejections of South Korea’s boast in post-publication communications sent to Reuters on Wednesday.

AT&T said it was the victor because it announced on Dec 18 that it planned to launch its 5G network in 12 US cities that month. However, its network is available only to consumers using a mobile hotspot device, not on 5G phones.

Verizon, for its part, countered that it had come first. Hours after the Reuters report, it said it had already launched its 5G network and that it would be available on a new Motorola phone — though only in Chicago and Minneapolis.

“We stand by our story,” a Reuters spokeswoman said.

The intensity with which company representatives disputed each other’s claims underscores the high stakes in the battle for supremacy over an industry that is expected to spend $275 billion over seven years in the United States alone, according to Accenture estimates.

The winner is seen playing a central role in helping to generate some $12.3 trillion in annual revenue across a broad range of industries by 2035, according to IHS Markit.

The technology, which can provide data speeds at least 20 times faster than 4G, will also underpin the great advances of the next era, from self-driving cars and augmented reality to smart cities and artificial intelligence.

“Being first is important in our industry and we want that recognition,” an AT&T spokesman said, adding that the company spent $130bn over the last five years to upgrade its network.

Some experts point out that the jockeying will mean little to consumers. “The reason you’re getting that reaction is this is a battle of marketing vaporware rather than real network evolution,” said Craig Moffett, telecoms and communications analyst at MoffettNathanson.

“They’re tripping over themselves to claim they have a 5G network,” he said. “But we’re years away from it having any impact on user experiences.”

Bragging rights aside, being first is a matter of national pride. So excited was US President Donald Trump about dominating the telecoms future, he invented a technology that does not yet exist — 6G — in a Feb 21 tweet.

“I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible. It is far more powerful, faster, and smarter than the current standard. American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind,” he tweeted. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

South Korea’s carriers had announced plans to launch their 5G networks by Friday.

But by 5pm local time Wednesday word began to spread that Verizon was planning a surprise debut of its own 5G network as early as Thursday, a full week ahead of its original intended schedule, an official at South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT told Reuters.

To snatch victory from the jaws of Verizon, the South Korean carriers raced against the clock and agreed to collectively light up the country’s 5G networks just six hours after finding out about Verizon’s plans, said the official, who declined to be named.

South Korean carriers including SK Telecom and KT Corp flipped the switch at 11pm local time (1400 GMT/1000 EST), nearly an hour ahead of when Verizon confirmed it had launched in the two markets in the United States at 10:55am EST (1455 GMT).

“It is a pretty big deal for every mobile carrier who can be called the world’s first,” the Ministry of Science official said.

On why Verizon accelerated its launch plan by a week, a Verizon spokesman said its network was ready. “Our customers were enthusiastic and ready to use 5G,” the spokesman added.

Sudan protesters rally outside army HQ for first time

Sudan protesters rally outside army HQ for first time
Thousands of Sudanese demonstrators marched in Khartoum on Saturday, many reaching the army headquarters for the first time since deadly protests against President Omar al-Bashir erupted last year, witnesses said.

Chanting “One Army, One People,” the protesters rallied in the capital’s streets following a call by organisers to march on the compound, which also includes Bashir’s residence.

The crowds chanted the movement’s catchcry “peace, justice, freedom” as they marched towards the complex where the defence ministry is also based, onlookers said. “They were also calling on Bashir to step down,” a witness said.

Taking a break from shouting anti-government slogans, protester Ghada Mohamed said the rally signalled a “bright future” for Sudan.

Protester Amir Omer said the demonstrators had managed to send a message to the military.

“We still haven’t achieved our goal, but we have delivered our message to the army and that is: come join us,” he said.

Protest organisers led by the Sudanese Professionals Association said earlier this week that demonstrators would march Saturday to demand the army either “take the side of the people or the dictator’s”.

Soon after reaching the compound, organisers called on the protesters to hold in place outside its fortified walls.

“At this historic moment, we ask you to not leave the army headquarters and hold a sit-in in the nearby streets,” the organisers said in a statement.

“We appreciate that the army did not touch the protesters and we hope that it will take the side of the people.” Since the protests erupted, security agents and riot police have cracked down on demonstrators but the army has not intervened.

In a separate demonstration, protesters reached the army office in the town of Madani southeast of the capital, witnesses said.

Protests have rocked the east African country since December, with angry crowds accusing Bashir’s government of mismanaging the economy that has led to soaring food prices and regular shortages of fuel and foreign currency.

Demonstrations first erupted on December 19 after a government decision to triple the price of bread.

But they quickly escalated into nationwide rallies against Bashir’s rule, with protesters calling on him to step down.

On February 22, the veteran leader imposed a nationwide state of emergency to quell the protests after an initial crackdown failed to rein in protesters. Since emergency rule came into effect, the demonstrations have been largely confined to the capital and its twin city of Omdurman, but organisers had called for widespread rallies and a march on the army headquarters on Saturday.

Pope blames US, Europe for selling weapons in war zones

Pope blames US, Europe for selling weapons in war zones
Pope Francis has blamed Europe and the United States for selling weapons in war zones, fueling conflicts and causing victims in Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan.

Speaking to students and teachers of Milan's San Carlo Institute on Saturday, the pope said that the reason why there are so many wars around the world is that “the rich Europe and America sell weapons ... used to kill children and kill people.”

Francis also added that, without weapons, countries like Syria, Yemen and Afghanistan wouldn't be at war.

The pontiff said that “a country that produces and sells weapons has on its conscience the death of every child and the destruction of each family. It's us that make a difference.“

Finely painted Ptolemaic tomb unveiled in Egypt

Finely painted Ptolemaic tomb unveiled in Egypt
Archaeologists on Friday unveiled a well preserved and finely painted tomb thought to be from the early Ptolemaic period near the Egyptian town of Sohag.

The tomb was built for a man named Tutu and his wife, and is one of seven discovered in the area last October, when authorities found smugglers digging illegally for artefacts, officials said.

Its painted walls depict funeral processions and images of the owner working in the fields, as well as his family genealogy written in hieroglyphics.

Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, described the burial chamber as a “beautiful, colorful tomb”.

“The tomb is made up of a central lobby, and a burial room with two stone coffins. The lobby is divided in two”, he said.

“It shows images of the owner of the burial room, Tutu, giving and receiving gifts before different gods and goddesses”.

“We see the same thing for his wife, Ta-Shirit-Iziz, with the difference that (we see) verses from a book, the book of the afterlife”, he added.

Two mummies, a woman aged between 35-50 and a boy aged 12-14, were on display outside the shallow burial chamber, in a desert area near the Nile about 390 km (242 miles) south of Cairo.

Around 50 mummified animals, including mice and falcons, were also recovered from the tomb.

Ptolemaic rule spanned about three centuries until the Roman conquest in 30 B.C.

Egypt’s ancient sites are a draw for tourists and authorities hope new finds can help boost the sector, which has been recovering after foreigners were scared off by the North African country’s 2011 popular uprising and the turmoil and insecurity that followed.

U.N. to hold Libya conference as planned despite surge in fighting: envoy

The U.N. Envoy for Libya, Ghassan Salame, speaks during a news conference in Tripoli, Libya
The United Nations is determined to hold Libya’s national conference on possible elections on time despite eastern forces’ advance on the capital Tripoli in an escalation of the conflict, a senior U.N. envoy said on Saturday.

G7 foreign ministers warned eastern Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar to halt his thrust on Tripoli, menacing the internationally recognized government based there, or face possible international action.

Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) said on Friday its forces had advanced into the capital’s southern outskirts and taken its former international airport. Its spokesman Ahmed Mismari said 14 LNA troops had been killed so far

The offensive by the LNA, which is allied to a parallel administration based in the main eastern city of Benghazi, intensifies a power struggle that has fractured the oil-producing country since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

The United Nations aims to stage a conference in the southwestern town of Ghadames on April 14-16 to weigh elections as a way out of the country’s prolonged factional anarchy, which has seen Islamist militants establish a toehold in some areas.

Ghassan Salame, the U.N. special envoy to Libya, said he was striving to prevent the new crisis from getting out of control. “We have worked for one year for this national conference, we won’t give up this political work quickly,” he said.

“We know that holding the conference in this difficult time of escalation and fighting is a difficult matter. But we are determined to hold it on time unless compelling circumstances force us not to,” he told reporters in Tripoli.

The Tripoli-based Prime Minister Fayez al-Serraj, who relies on various armed groups, said Haftar’s move was a coup.

“He (Haftar) will find in us only steadfastness and strength from all those are coming from all over the country to defend Libyans’ dream of a civil sovereign state,” he said in a televised speech.

At a G7 meeting in France, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said he and his counterparts had agreed they must exert pressure on those responsible for the upsurge of fighting in Libya, especially Haftar.

Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi said the G7 statement “should be seen as an appeal to General Haftar to consider with a sense of responsibility peaceful solutions for stabilizing Libya under the UN umbrella.”

Russia also called for restraint, saying Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told Haftar that Moscow continues to insist on a political solution to “disputed issues” in Libya.

Haftar told Bogdanov about what he described as efforts to fight terrorists in Libya, including near Tripoli, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

CRUCIBLE OF INSTABILITY

The United Nations wants to find agreement on a road map for elections to resolve the protracted instability in Libya, an important oil exporter and transit point for refugees and migrants trekking across the Sahara with the objective of reaching Europe across the Mediterranean Sea to the north.

In Cairo on Saturday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said the crisis could not be settled by military means, though insecurity in Libya had long been a source of worry.

At a news conference alongside Shoukry, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow wanted all political forces in Libya to strike an agreement in support of peace and warned against foreign meddling there.

There were no reports of significant fighting on Saturday.

Haftar’s LNA said on Saturday its positions were attacked in an air strike south of Tripoli but there were no casualties.

Haftar, 75, who casts himself as a foe of Islamist extremism but is viewed by opponents as a new dictator in the mould of Gaddafi, was quoted by Al-Arabiya TV as telling Guterres his offensive would continue until terrorism was defeated.

A former officer in Gaddafi’s army, Haftar enjoys the backing of Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, which see him as a bulwark against Islamists and have supported him militarily, according to U.N. reports. The UAE, however, joined Western countries in expressing its deep concern about the fighting.

In the past, Haftar has struck deals with armed factions outside Tripoli to advance his forces. But gaining control of Tripoli - the ultimate prize for Haftar’s eastern parallel government - would be far more complicated.

Armed groups allied to the Tripoli government have moved more machinegun-mounted pickup trucks from Misrata to Tripoli to defend it against Haftar’s forces. The city is known for a spirit of resisting “old regime” figures, developed during 2011 when pro-Gaddafi forces besieged it for three months.

The LNA says it has 85,000 men but this includes soldiers paid by the central government that it hopes to inherit. Its elite force, Saiqa (Lightning), numbers some 3,500, while Haftar’s sons also have well-equipped troops, LNA sources say.

In 2014, he assembled former Gaddafi soldiers and in a three-year battle seized Benghazi. This year, he took control of Libya’s south with its oilfields.

New York man charged with threatening to kill Muslim US lawmaker Ilhan Omar

US lawmaker Ilhan Omar
A 55-year-old New York man has been arrested and charged with threatening to assault and murder Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, a Muslim US Congress member from Minnesota, federal prosecutors said.

Patrick Carlineo Jr of Addison, New York, faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted, the US Department of Justice said on Friday in a statement.

According to prosecutors, Carlineo spoke by telephone with one of Omar’s staff members on March 21 and asked the employee: “Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she’s a (expletive) terrorist. I’ll put a bullet in her (expletive) skull.”

The threat was referred to the US Capitol Police, which launched a probe in coordination with the FBI, the Justice Department said.

Carlineo sounded angry during the phone call but also spelt his name for the staff member and provided contact details, according to an affidavit by an FBI special agent.

Interviewed at his home by investigators, Carlineo “stated that he was a patriot, that he loves the President, and that he hates radical Muslims in our government,” the affidavit said.

Carlineo made an initial court appearance on Friday and is being held pending a detention hearing on April 10.

Representatives of Omar, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee who was elected in November as one of the two first Muslim women to win seats in Congress, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In February, Omar apologised “unequivocally” after Republicans and Democrats condemned comments she made about the pro-Israel lobby in the United States as using anti-Semitic stereotypes. President Donald Trump said her apology was inadequate and she should be “ashamed of herself.”

Do not scare me of jails, have faced Musharraf's 10-year accountability: Hamza

Opposition Leader in Punjab Hamza Shehbaz
Opposition Leader in Punjab Hamza Shehbaz on Saturday asked Prime Minister Imran Khan not to scare him of jails as he had faced them and been through 10-year accountability process by Musharraf regime.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader said so while addressing party workers outside his residence, after the Lahore High Court (LHC) barred National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from arresting Hamza.

"The nation is awakening. The workers are standing firm here," he said. "Our workers are our asset and I respect them from the core of my heart."

Hamza said the constitution and the law won today in the country.

He noted that his party's leadership faced cases against them and appeared before investigating agencies despite all reservations.

"Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan to face cases against him, leaving behind his ailing wife. But not a single penny worth of corruption could be proven against the former prime minister," the opposition leader said.

"We appeared before the NAB despite all reservations and the anti-graft body stated before the court that Hamza Shehbaz was most cooperative of all."

He said he had the court order with him, adding, "Court orders should be respected for the sake of rule of law in the country. You cannot arrest me".

Hamza said tyrant are those who enter a person's residence by scaling the walls and detain the occupants.

He said he was scared due to the present economic conditions of the country.

"The economic conditions of the country are haunting me today. Niazi sahib, you have deprived the masses of food, while the tests being conducted in public hospitals are costlier than tests in private hospitals," the opposition leader said.

He invited the incumbent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government to hold talks with them on Charter of Democracy, saying that opposition would play its role for the sake of people.

"There are ages left for political rivalry. The price of dollar today has been putting a question mark on Pakistan's economy," Hamza said. "The economy of the country is declining and there is shortage of capital even for debt servicing.

He invited the government to come and try jointly carving out a roadmap to help strengthen the economy.

The opposition leader advised the prime minister to stop telling lies, saying that the masses did not have enough money for treatment of their children.

He said they would resolve public issues the way they eliminated load-shedding from the country.

"The people have sent us to assemblies. We took oath despite worst rigging, for the sake of continuity of democracy," Hamza said.

"Niazi sahib, I have faced 10-year accountability by Pervez Musharraf government," he said further.

"I served time in Adiyala jail when I was 18-year-old. Do not try and scare me."

Amazon finds warmer welcome for other HQ2

The Crystal City neighborhood in Arlington, Virginia, where Amazon plans to build its next big headquarters.
Yes, Virginia, there is an HQ2. Never mind the beating that Amazon took with its failed effort in New York.

It was business as usual in Long Island City last week. Catering and moving trucks buzzed in and out of a waterfront neighborhood. One worker manned a forklift on the sidewalk while another nearby spray-painted a metal frame.

You wouldn't know it from standing there, but just weeks earlier this quiet industrial block in Queens was slated to become a 25,000-employee campus for Amazon -- that is, until protesters and local politicians helped kill the project.

Meanwhile, at Crystal City, in Virginia's Arlington County, it's a very different scene, where demolition has already started in preparation for construction of Amazon's surviving 25,000-employee development. Local activists are raising concerns about the Virginia project, but -- unlike in New York -- there seems to be far less vitriol.

When the New York project fell apart in February, focus quickly shifted to Crystal City, where plenty of onlookers wondered if both developments could fail.

But according to development experts, local politicians and demographic data, the Virginia project was always a better fit and more critical to Amazon's future than the New York site.

Not only that, but walking away from both projects would be an even bigger embarrassment for the company.

For those reasons, it seems likely Amazon will stay the course in Crystal City, even if more protests or challenges bubble up.

It also seems like a keeper for the locals, despite some grumbling.

"This is a game-changer for Arlington," said Stephen Fuller, a professor at George Mason University's Schar School of Policy and Government. "The tax base is eroding; this turns that around."

Moderate Drinking Doesn’t Protect Against Stroke

Drinking likely doesn’t help protect the heart
Blood pressure and the risk of stroke increase steadily with increasing alcohol intake, even for moderate consumption, according to a large genetic study in The Lancet.

This runs counter to previous research suggesting that one or two drinks a day is “heart healthy.”

Previous studies have suggested that consuming small amounts of alcohol may lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. However, others indicate that the only safe level of alcohol consumption is zero.

Experts say the new research points to the potential harms of drinking alcohol, at any level. But the study is not the final word on the subject.

Researchers from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, Peking University, and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, followed more than 500,000 people for about 10 years.

They monitored participants for cardiovascular incidents such as stroke or heart attack.

The results show that men who consumed four drinks a day had on average a 38 percent higher risk of stroke.

Stroke risk increased steadily from low levels of alcohol intake to four drinks per day, the range of consumption studied by the researchers.

Pak being transformed from security state into open visa regime: Fawad Chaudhry

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain says the fundamental changes introduced by PTI government are taking the country to economic stability.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Saturday, he said Pakistan is being transformed from a security state into a state having open visa regime. A pilot project with five countries to this effect is continuing successfully.

The Minister said exports are increasing and imports are on the downward trajectory.

He said the government will soon launch assets declaration scheme providing people one-time opportunity to become tax filer.

He said two-third of the economy is undocumented.

Information Minister said a crackdown has also been launched against the people hoarding dollars, which has helped bringing value of dollar down.

He said the export sector has been provided subsidy worth forty-five billion rupees, and the government plans to bring industry-friendly budget.

Criticizing the last two governments, the Information Minister said their policies had taken the country near to bankruptcy.

However, PTI governments' initiatives, including financial assistance from friendly states, are gradually bringing the economy on track.

Referring to the matter of National Accountability Bureau's action to arrest PML-N leader Hamza Shahbaz in Lahore, the Minister said the government has nothing to do with the matter as it is related to NAB.

However, he said, Hamza Shahbaz should surrender himself before the law instead of hiding in his house and using his family members as shield.

Fawad Chaudhry expressed commitment that the accountability process will reach its logical conclusion, putting foundation of a prosperous country.

He said recovery of the national kitty plundered by the corrupt elements, including Sharif brothers and Asif Zardari, is imperative to improve economic condition of the country.

He said the recovery of the looted amount will help bring rates of electricity and gas down and check inflation.

Fawad Chaudhry said Hamza Shahbaz is accused of having transferred money abroad and he and his family has properties abroad worth eight-five billion rupees.

He said Sharif brothers and Asif Zardari desire that they should not be asked about the money plundered by them. But, he said, they will either have to return the looted money or go to jail.

Information Minister said the country got sixty billion dollars loan since 2008, but major portion of the amount went into the pockets of the rulers and they purchased properties abroad with that amount.

Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said that politics should be differentiated from crime, and politicians need not use politics to cover their crime. He said the media and opinion makers should also play a role in this regard.

China to close industrial park where deadly blast killed 78

China to close industrial park where deadly blast killed 78 people
The Chinese chemical industry park where an explosion last month killed 78 people and left hundreds injured will be closed, authorities have said.

The blast in Yancheng city, eastern Jiangsu province, was one of the worst industrial accidents in the country in recent years, razing buildings nearby and blowing out the windows of surrounding homes. Authorities evacuated thousands of residents.

The decision to close the Xiangshui Chemical Industry Park was made Thursday by the local government, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Friday.

Jiangsu province will also begin closing chemical plants, with the number of producers to be cut roughly in half by 2020, news site The Paper reported.

Local authorities said Tuesday 187 people hurt in the blast remained in hospital with two in critical condition.

Three employees from the firm Jiangsu Tianjiayi Chemical, whose facility was involved in the blast, have been detained by police.

They bore "significant responsibility" for the accident, according to a statement on the Yancheng government´s official Twitter-like Weibo account.

The company, with 195 employees, was established in 2007 and mainly produced raw chemical materials including anisole, a highly flammable compound.

It had a history of violating environmental regulations, according to online records from Yancheng city´s environment and ecology bureau.

Deadly industrial accidents are common in China, where safety regulations are often poorly enforced.

In November, a gas leak at a plant in the northern Chinese city of Zhangjiakou — which will host the 2022 Winter Olympics — killed 24 people and injured 21 others.

In 2015, China saw one of its worst industrial accidents when giant chemical blasts in the northern port city of Tianjin killed at least 165 people.

Naib made Afghanistan ODI captain ahead of World Cup

Naib made Afghanistan ODI captain ahead of World Cup
Afghanistan replaced long-serving One-day International captain Asghar Afghan with Gulbadin Naib on Friday, less than two months before this year’s 50-over World Cup in England and Wales.

Afghan, 31, took over the team’s captaincy in 2015 after Mohammad Nabi had stepped down following the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Under his leadership, the war-torn South Asian country gained full membership status from the governing body International Cricket Council and also qualified for the 2019 World Cup.

Afghanistan’s chief selector Dawalt Ahmadzai backed Naib to continue Afghan’s legacy and said he was the right choice to lead the team at the World Cup.

“Asghar Afghan who captained team Afghanistan for a period of around four years achieved a lot and made the country proud,” Ahmadzai said in a statement on the Afghan Cricket Board’s (ACB) website. “I hope Gulbadin Naib will be able to continue his legacy at the helm of the team’s affairs.”

However, the news did not go down well with Afghan’s predecessor Nabi, who took to Twitter to question the timing of the change.

“Being a senior member of the side and having seen the rise of Afghanistan cricket, I don’t think it’s the right time to change the captain before the WC,” Nabi said. “The team has gelled really well under Asghar and I personally feel he is the right man to lead us.”

The 28-year-old Naib, who bowls seam and bats in the middle order, has played 52 ODIs for Afghanistan since making his debut in 2011.

In wholesale changes to the leadership structure, all-rounder Rahmat Shah was appointed Test captain replacing Afghan while leg-spinner Rashid Khan was put in charge of the Twenty20 team.

Rashid, who was also named vice-captain for the 50-over format, was even more vocal in his criticism of the move and called the decision to oust Afghan “irresponsible”.

“With all the respect to the selection committee, I strongly disagree with the decision,” Rashid said on Twitter. “As we have the cricket World Cup in front of us... Asghar Afghan should remain as our team captain.

“With just months to go for such a mega event like World Cup, changing the captain will cause uncertainty and also team morale will be affected.”

The Afghan Cricket Board was not immediately available for comment.

Afghanistan will tour Scotland and Ireland next month to prepare for the World Cup and will also play an ODI each against Pakistan and England before kicking off their campaign against Australia on June 1.

KP govt approves over Rs2.4 billion for 42 projects
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Development Working Party has accorded approval to more than Rs2.4 billion for 42 projects in different sectors, Radio Pakistan reported.

The funds were consented at a meeting of the committee in Peshawar.

The projects are related to health, education, agriculture, energy and power, science and technology, industries, roads and sports sectors.

It is pertinent to mention that recently the performance of KP government has been criticized for its inability to complete the bus rapid transit (BRT) Peshawar project in the specified time.

KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan on March 23 directed the inspection team for inquiry into delay in construction of the BRT project.

In a statement earlier, Mahmood Khan had said that soft opening for the project would be held on March 23, which could not be materialised. He had warned that next course of action would be taken in case of delay.

CM Khan has directed the provincial inspection team to hold inquiry to determine who was responsible for the delay and present him a comprehensive report on it. He said strict action would be taken against those responsible for this.

If NAB was independent, Chaudhry and Gill would not have been its spox: Marriyum

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb on Saturday said if the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) spokespersons was an independent institution then Punjab chief minister's spokesperson Shahbaz Gill and Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry would have been its spokespersons.

Talking to media after NAB teams once again reached PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif's family residence to arrest Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz, Marriyum said, "NAB is continuing with its state terrorism. According to the Lahore High Court’s decision, NAB cannot arrest Hamza."

Questioning where "Hamza's arrest orders have suddenly appeared from", Marriyum said, "Yesterday while addressing a rally Imran Khan said he will put everyone in jail. This is just a ploy to distract people from the government’s incompetence.”

“This is no law, this is state terrorism to arrest people. Imran Khan is using NAB for state terrorism. First, they used to stand atop containers and do terrorism and now they are standing on opposition's heads and scaring them," she asserted.

The PML-N spokesperson further said, "Hamza appeared before NAB whenever he was summoned. A day earlier, we found out through news channels that Hamza has been summoned on April 9 but did not receive any notice."

"We will fight this political war,” she upheld. "If NAB was independent, then Imran Khan, Fawad Chaudhry and Shahbaz Gill would not have been its spokespersons."

Further, Aurangzeb rejected claims that Hamza's guards resorted to violence during Friday's raid.

Meanwhile, PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah said Hamza has moved the LHC against NAB's Friday raid. "This is not a NAB or police matter, but Imran Khan's revenge," he said.

Hamza Shehbaz will have to surrender at any cost: Barrister Shahzad Akbar

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability Barrister Shahzad Akbar
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Accountability Barrister Shahzad Akbar said on Saturday PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz will have to surrender at any cost if the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) team has warrants for his arrest.

Speaking to media, he said the Supreme Court in a recent judgment had interpreted the NAB law, saying the bureau doesn’t need court permission to arrest a suspect.

“NAB is entitled to make arrests at any time as per its law,” he explained, slamming Hamza for what he said hiding inside his home while NAB officials are standing outside his residence to arrest him.

Shehzad Akbar said the PML-N leader is using party workers to evade his arrest.

The corruption watchdog had also issued multiple notices to Hamza’s younger brother but he was on the run, he added.

He alleged Hamza laundered money using his servants.

The prime minister’s aide asked the PML-N leader to surrender to the NAB team without delay.

Singapore, Malaysia reach deal to end months-long airspace dispute

Singapore, Malaysia reach deal to end months-long airspace dispute
Singapore and Malaysia reached an agreement to end their months-long airspace dispute, the transport ministers of the two neighboring countries said in a joint statement on Saturday.

Under the deal, Singapore will halt instrument landing system procedures at its Seletar Airport, while Malaysia will open up a restricted area near the countries’ border.

“Singapore will withdraw the Instrument Landing System procedures for Seletar Airport and Malaysia will indefinitely suspend its permanent Restricted Area over Pasir Gudang,” the statement of Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Singapore’s Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan said.

This will allow Malaysia Airlines’ subsidiary Firefly to start operations at Seletar Airport this month, the statement said. Media reports said the airline postponed its plans to fly out of Seletar Airport last year due to the dispute.

In December, Malaysia said it wanted to take back control of airspace managed by the city-state since 1974, as Singapore’s new instrument landing system at its small Seletar airport involved a flight path over Malaysian airspace.

The ministers also said in the joint statement that the two countries have set up a committee to review the 1974 airspace agreement.
Singapore was once part of Malaysia but they separated acrimoniously in 1965, clouding diplomatic and economic dealings for years.

In another dispute, the sides previously agreed to the establishment of a working group to discuss issues around port limits after Singapore protested in December about Malaysia’s plan to extend the limits of a port, saying it encroached on its territorial waters.

G20 must tackle root causes of trade tensions that threaten world economic growth:EU

G20 must tackle root causes of trade tensions that threaten world economic growth
The European Union will tell a meeting of finance leaders from the world’s 20 biggest economies next week that they must all tackle the root causes of global trade tensions because they are putting global growth at risk, an EU document showed.

Finance ministers and central bank governors of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies are to meet in Washington on April 11-12 to discuss the main challenges to the world economy.

“Current trade tensions put the ongoing expansion at risk and are therefore a source of concern,” a joint position paper agreed by EU finance ministers on Saturday said.

The United States and China are engaged in intense negotiations to end a months-long trade war that has rattled global markets. Hopes of a resolution soared after both sides expressed optimism following talks in Beijing last week.

The International Monetary Fund said in its April World Economic Outlook this week that an escalation of the U.S.-China trade war could reduce U.S. growth by up to 0.6 percent and China’s by up to 1.5 percent.

“The international community has to tackle the root causes of the ongoing trade tensions by ensuring a level playing field for open and free trade in goods and services, investment and intellectual property rights,” the joint EU statement said.

The United States is also in talks with the European Union on a trade deal after imposing tariffs on European steel and aluminum last year and threatening to impose tariffs on European cars.

“We reaffirm our commitment to keep the global economy open as well as rules-based, to support an inclusive multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its center and to keep international economic cooperation on track,” the EU said.

Washington has reservations about the WTO which it believes is unable to tackle modern trade challenges and issues such as intellectual property theft.

The EU believes the WTO is the best way to deal with trade disputes but that it should be reformed to address U.S. and its own concerns.

Rising Thai political star hit with sedition charges

Rising Thai political star hit with sedition charges
The telegenic leader of an anti-junta political party who rose to prominence in Thailand's election last month was charged with sedition Saturday, drawing hundreds of his supporters onto the streets urging him to "fight".

Billionaire Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit heads the youth-oriented Future Forward Party which won more than six million votes in the March 24 poll, the first since a 2014 coup, with its message of ousting the military from politics.

It had joined an anti-junta coalition with six others claiming the right to form a government in the aftermath of the disputed vote whose full results are expected by May 9.

Earlier this week he posted on Facebook that police had summoned him to appear on Saturday to face a sedition charge relating to an anti-junta rally in 2015.

He said the charge was "politically motivated".

Hundreds turned up on Saturday morning in front of Pathumwan police station in downtown Bangkok, wearing T-shirts bearing the tycoon's face and shouting "Save Thanathorn!" while waving placards that said "Military, get out!"

While inside, he and his party members tweeted out photos of what was happening, showing Thanathorn affixing his fingerprints on the charges and representatives from foreign embassies and the UN observing the police procedure.

More than two hours later, he emerged from the station and told reporters he had been charged with "inciting unrest.... helping the suspect escape... and the illegal assembly of more than ten people" for his actions in 2015.

"We believe we are innocent. I did everything in good faith," he said, denying the charges.

Before leaving the police compound, Thanathorn flashed a three-finger salute, a resistance symbol borrowed by Thailand's anti-junta movement from the Hollywood movie "The Hunger Games", as his supporters did the same while shouting "Thanathorn, fight, fight!"

The charismatic leader is already being investigated under Thailand's Computer Crimes Act for allegedly spreading false information when he criticised the junta in a Facebook Live discussion last year.

Supporter Woranuch Sirithonchai, who travelled three hours from her coastal hometown of Rayong, said she supports Future Forward's anti-junta policies and "progressive thinking".

"This incident happened since 2015 so why do they just summon him now? It's because he has gained popularity," she said.

Malaysia backtracks on decision to join ICC

Malaysia backtracks on decision to join ICC
Malaysia will not join the International Criminal Court (ICC), Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad has announced, raising further concerns that his 10-month administration is holding back on promised reforms after coming under pressure from the opposition.

Malaysia signed the Rome Statute, the ICC's founding treaty, in March but still had to ratify it to formally become a member of the The Hague-based tribunal.

Opposition parties objected to it on racial grounds that it could undermine privileges for Malays, as well as the immunity of nine Malay state rulers. The wealthy ruler of southern Johor state also recently accused the government of breaching the constitution by signing the treaty.

Malaysian jailed for more than 10 years for insulting Islam

On Friday, Mahathir said the cabinet had decided not to ratify the Rome Statute as it has been manipulated by his opponents. He rejected allegations that the treaty will undermine Malaysia's sovereignty and its royal families.

"This is not because we are against it but because of the political confusion about what it entails, caused by people with vested interest," a visibly upset Mahathir told reporters.

"I see this as a way to blacken my face because they know they cannot oust me easily," said the 93-year-old.

Policy flip-flop

The move is the latest policy u-turn by the government, which took office in May last year after an opposition alliance led by Mahathir defeated a ruling coalition that had governed Malaysia for 60 years by promising to tackle corruption, repeal rights-abusing laws and turn the country into one of Southeast Asia's leading democracies.

Late last year, the government backtracked on signing a key United Nations treaty against racial discrimination after opposition parties objected to the plan, claiming it would undermine the constitution and the rights of the majority Malays.

Malaysia: Malays rally amid worries over government 'weakness'.

Mahathir's government still struggles with racial issues as many Muslim Malays, who account for two-thirds of the population, support the opposition.

Traditional ethnic Malay rulers constitutionally head nine of Malaysia's 13 states. They do not have executive power but are highly respected among Malay Muslims.

Mahathir criticised efforts to engage Malaysia's royal families in the discourse against the government.

"They claimed the law negates the rights of the Malays, the rights of the rulers. It's absolute nonsense," he said.

"We understand that this is a political move to get the rulers to back them up. Of course, some members of the royal family may be involved, but the whole idea is to get the royalty in Malaysia to go against the government."

FIR registered against Hamza Shehbaz's guards by NAB

Leader of PML-N Hamza Shehbaz
A first information report (FIR) was registered on Saturday against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hamza Shehbaz's guards on an application filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The FIR registered in Lahore's Model Town Police Station states that Hamza's guards manhandled and threatened NAB team members who raided the residence of PML-N president and opposition leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif.

According to police, the FIR includes clauses of interference in official matters, torture, hooliganism and issuance of threats.

The FIR registered on NAB driver Mumtaz Hussain's application said that when the bureau team reached Shehbaz's Model Town residence and showed the security guards namely Abdul Rehman, Shahbaz Khan and Muhammad Saleem the arrest warrants for Hamza, they and six other guards attacked the bureau team.

The guards tortured van driver Mumtaz Hussain, tore his clothes and issued threats, the FIR said.

NAB on Friday conducted a raid at Shehbaz's 96-H Model Town residence. A press release by NAB said a team had gone to the residence to arrest Hamza on the basis of evidence against him in the assets beyond means and alleged money laundering case.

The press release added that NAB officials were manhandled by Hamza’s guards, their clothes were torn and death threats were given.

"NAB officials had gone to the residence with an arrest warrant and the Supreme Court had stated that the accountability bureau did not require to inform any accused prior to arresting them," read the press release.

The press release added that Hamza had violated the law and the bureau on the basis of evidence against and in light of Supreme Court directives would arrest him.

NAB teams once again at Shehbaz family's Model Town residence for Hamza's arrest

 Hamza Shehbaz
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Saturday once again reached Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif's residence and cordoned it off in an attempt to arrest Hamza Shehbaz.

Contingents of police and anti-riot force have surrounded Shehbaz's 96-H Model Town residence.

Additional Director NAB Chaudhry Asghar while speaking to PML-N lawyer Atta Tarrar outside the Shehbaz family residence said, "We are here to arrest Hamza and should be allowed to go inside the house."

"We have Hamza's arrest warrant," the NAB additional director said.

Speaking to the media, the NAB additional director said, "We are not being allowed inside the residence to arrest Hamza. We are here to arrest Hamza in cases pertaining to assets beyond known sources of income and money laundering."

"We will not leave without arresting Hamza," he asserted.

SP Model Town Ali Waseem, who is also present outside the Shehbaz family residence, said, "NAB has Hamza's arrest warrants and we are trying to make contact to ask him to come out of his house."

Regarding the raid, Punjab chief minister's spokesperson Shahbaz Gill said, "NAB is independent and not bound to inform us regarding inquiries."

"The accountability bureau has also arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders," Gill added. Criticising the PML-N's reaction to the raid a day earlier, the Punjab CM's spokesperson said, "PML-N's reaction has always been shameful and they manhandled the NAB team yesterday.

Scientists set to unveil first picture of a black hole

picture of a black hole
The world, it seems, is soon to see the first picture of a black hole.

On Wednesday, astronomers across the globe will hold "six major press conferences" simultaneously to announce the first results of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), which was designed precisely for that purpose.

It has been a long wait.

Of all the forces or objects in the Universe that we cannot see — including dark energy and dark matter — none has frustrated human curiosity so much as the invisible maws that shred and swallow stars like so many specks of dust.

Astronomers began speculating about these omnivorous "dark stars" in the 1700s, and since then indirect evidence has slowly accumulated.

"More than 50 years ago, scientists saw that there was something very bright at the centre of our galaxy," Paul McNamara, an astrophysicist at the European Space Agency and an expert on black holes, told AFP.

"It has a gravitational pull strong enough to make stars orbit around it very quickly — as fast as 20 years."

To put that in perspective, our Solar System takes about 230 million years to circle the centre of the Milky Way.

Eventually, astronomers speculated that these bright spots were in fact "black holes" — a term coined by American physicist John Archibald Wheeler in the mid-1960s — surrounded by a swirling band of white-hot gas and plasma.

At the inner edge of these luminous accretion disks, things abruptly go dark.

"The event horizon" — a.k.a. the point-of-no-return — "is not a physical barrier, you couldn´t stand on it," McNamara explained.

"If you´re on the inside of it, you can´t escape because you would need infinite energy. And if you are on the other side, you can — in principle."

A golf ball on the moon

At its centre, the mass of a black hole is compressed into a single, zero-dimensional point.

The distance between this so-called "singularity" and the event horizon is the radius, or half the width, of a black hole.

The EHT that collected the data for the first-ever image is unlike any ever devised.

"Instead of constructing a giant telescope — which would collapse under its own weight — we combined several observatories as if they were fragments of a giant mirror," Michael Bremer, an astronomer at the Institute for Millimetric Radio Astronomy in Grenoble, told AFP.

In April 2017, eight such radio telescopes scattered across the globe — in Hawaii, Arizona, Spain, Mexico, Chile, and the South Pole — were trained on two black holes in very different corners of the Universe to collect data.

Studies that could be unveiled next week are likely to zoom in on one or the other.

Oddsmakers favour Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the centre of our own elliptical galaxy that first caught the eye of astronomers.

Sag A* has four million times the mass of our sun, which means that the black hole is generates is about 44 million kilometres across.

That may sound like a big target, but for the telescope array on Earth some 26,000 light-years (or 245 trillion kilometres) away, it´s like trying to photograph a golf ball on the Moon.

Testing Einstein

The other candidate is a monster black hole — 1,500 times more massive even than Sag A* — in an elliptical galaxy known as M87.

It´s also a lot farther from Earth, but distance and size balance out, making it roughly as easy (or difficult) to pinpoint.

One reason this dark horse might be the one revealed next week is light smog within the Milky Way.

"We are sitting in the plain of our galaxy — you have to look through all the stars and dust to get to the centre," said McNamara.

The data collected by the far-flung telescope array still had to be collected and collated.

"The imaging algorithms we developed fill the gaps of data we are missing in order to reconstruct a picture of a black hole," the team said on their website.

Astrophysicists not involved in the project, including McNamara, are eagerly — perhaps anxiously — waiting to see if the findings challenge Einstein´s theory of general relativity, which has never been tested on this scale.

Breakthrough observations in 2015 that earned the scientists involved a Nobel Prize used gravitational wave detectors to track two black holes smashing together.

As they merged, ripples in the curvatures of time-space creating a unique, and detectable, signature.

"Einstein´s theory of general relativity says that this is exactly what should happen," said McNamara.

But those were tiny black holes — only 60 times more massive than the Sun — compared to either of the ones under the gaze of the EHT.

"Maybe the ones that are millions of times more massive are different — we just don´t know yet."
