Plea to put Imran Khan, ex-ministers on ECL filed in IHC

Islamabad High Court
A plea seeking to place the names of former prime minister Imran Khan and ministers in his cabinet on the Exit Control List (ECL) was filed in the Islamabad High Court on Saturday.

The IHC will hear the petition tomorrow (Monday).

The plea was filed by Maulvi Iqbal Haider as the former PM left PM House following his ouster from the office of the premier as a result of a successful no-confidence vote against him Saturday night.

The plea seeks an investigation into the alleged threat letter and an inquiry against the former prime minister and the ministers regarding the matter.

Haider has also requested the IHC to put former deputy speaker Qasim Suri and Asad Majeed on the ECL alongside Imran, former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Fawad Chaudhry.

Despite the government’s hectic efforts to avoid voting on the no-confidence motion against then prime minister, Imran, the joint Opposition succeeded in its month-long efforts to oust him from the prime minister's office as 174 members of the National Assembly voted against him deciding his fate after a lot of drama in the House.

Plea filed in IHC to avoid imposition of martial law

IHC
As the political situation in the country takes a critical turn, a plea has been filed in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking to avoid the imposition of martial law in the country.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan had instructed National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser to hold the voting on the no-confidence motion today, but he is yet to allow the lawmakers to vote on the move against the premier.

According to media, if the top court's order is not followed somewhere, the high court of that particular jurisdiction takes notice of the situation.

"Does the prime minister have the power to remove the army chief without substantial reasoning [...] the Supreme Court, in its order, had written that any steps of the premier will be in line with the court's decision," the plea filed by advocate Adnan Iqbal said.

"...can the prime minister remove the army chief to meet his political ends?" the plea asked.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan, has refuted reports of him dismissing Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

On the other hand, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has filed a plea in the top court against the government for not following the apex court's orders — and the SC is scheduled to hear the case at 12:05am.

Despite the PTI government’s hectic efforts to avoid voting on the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan, the historic session of the National Assembly to decide his fate began on Saturday at 10:30 am. Shortly afterwards, however, Speaker Asad Qaiser decided to adjourn the session for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Shahbaz told the speaker to conduct the session as per the order of the Supreme Court and added that today, the Opposition will oust the "selected" prime minister by adopting a lawful and constitutional procedure.

At this, the speaker interjected a remark and said that the house should hold a discussion about the "foreign conspiracy" hatched against the PTI government. In response, the PML-N president stood up and reminded Qaiser that he is "duty-bound to follow the orders of the Supreme Court."

Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia said Saturday it will permit one million Muslims from inside and outside the country to participate in this year’s hajj, a sharp uptick after pandemic restrictions forced two years of drastically pared-down pilgrimages.

The following year, they upped the total to 60,000 fully vaccinated citizens and residents chosen through a lottery.

This year’s hajj, which will take place in July, will be limited to vaccinated pilgrims under age 65, Saturday’s announcement said.

Those coming from outside Saudi Arabia will be required to submit a negative Covid-19 PCR result from a test taken within 72 hours of travel.

The government wants to promote pilgrims’ safety "while ensuring that the maximum number of Muslims worldwide can perform the hajj", Saturday’s statement said.

President Alvi ordered to meet Baloch students

Islamabad High Court
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday directed President Arif Alvi to meet Baloch students in light of the petition against their harassment at Quaid-e-Azam University.

Chief Justice Athar Minallah heard the petition and ordered the home secretary to meet with and ensure the safety of Baloch students.

The Baloch student’s advocate, Zainab Janjua, informed the high court that students are apprehensive to go back to Balochistan due to fear of abduction.

Highlighting the disappearance of QAU student Hafeez Baloch, the IHC chief justice questioned the deputy attorney general on why students go missing, “why is a child missing for even one day?”

The IHC ordered the country's institutions to eliminate the fear of harassment and abduction of Baloch students in their province, adding that there is no justification for the experiences of the students.

“Whatever the current situation may be, it does not matter, Baloch students are the favourite students of this court,” Chief Justice Athar Minallah stated.

The chief justice urged that relevant authorities must do more to eliminate the reservations of Baloch students and added that not enough initiative was being taken.

“Why should students be afraid to go to their province?” he questioned.

The IHC ordered the secretary to the president to submit a report to the court upon the next hearing and has directed the deputy attorney general to arrange a meeting of Baloch students with President Arif Alvi.

The DAG informed the court that the president has met the home secretary regarding the students, and requires the court to grant more time to meet the students in light of the current political situation.

“It is the responsibility of the federal government, but the government does not meet them. This court expects the president of Pakistan to ensure the safety of children,” the IHC chief justice added.

The court also stated that the president had previously directed all the universities of Islamabad to refrain from racial profiling of children.

The lawyer for Quaid-e-Azam University informed the court that a committee has been formed and is looking into the matter, adding that the university inquired into the professor about whom the students have reservations.

The varsity’s lawyer also stated that a “high-level” committee has been formed on the matter of the missing student and is in the process of conducting an inquiry.

The case has been adjourned for a week.

Selection issues persisted throughout Australia series: Umar Gul

Umar Gul
Former Pakistan fast bowler and recently appointed bowling coach of the Afghanistan cricket team, Umar Gul, has opened up about Pakistan's selection problems throughout the series against Australia.

In an interview, Gul started the conversation by stating that Pakistan did not capitalize on the home advantage.

"We lost the Test series because we did not capitalize on the home advantage. Our spinners should have performed better but the pitches were extremely flat. If you play at home then you need to ensure that you maximize on that advantage but we did not do that," he said.

Read More: Imam-ul-Haq makes his way to top 3 in ICC ODI batting rankings

Commenting on the ODI series, Gul said Pakistan addressed all the issues they faced in the opening match in the remainder of the two games.

"Our comeback in the ODI series was extremely good. We made several mistakes in the first ODI but team management and players eradicated those mistakes in the next two ODIs. We had a huge problem of run rate in the first game but the players worked on that and Babar, Imam, and Fakhar all played more aggressively, which is exactly what was required," Gul stated.

The 37-year-old said that there were clear selection problems throughout the series.

"Throughout the series, Pakistan had a bit of problem with the selection. Some players were out of form and did not have rhythm but they were not rested, especially because we had strength on the bench. Some were only featured in one game but were left out from the rest - this indicates a lack of future planning," he explained.

Pakistan's premier bowler, Hasan Ali, has failed to live up to his reputation in recent times and Umar Gul said that he should have been rested instead.

"Hasan Ali has singlehandedly helped Pakistan win matches but he came back after an injury following the PSL. It happens to players sometimes that they are out of form. Once you don't have the rhythm and you don't get wickets, it frustrates you as a bowler. Pakistan should have rested him and kept Naseem Shah in the team because he bowled extremely well in the opening Test match," he added.

Gul further added that Shahnawaz Dahani should have been given a chance in the series: "If they did not want to continue with Naseem then Pakistan also had Dahani on the bench and we could have used his services in the games."

The selection problems, according to Gul, kept piling up as Saud Shakeel was dropped from the third match after not playing on his number in the previous match.

"Shaheen is Pakistan's main bowler but in the future, the management needs to balance the load on him. Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim and Shahnawaz Dahani can share his workload and he can continue to perform for a longer period."

Joint Opp ‘finalises plan’ for setting up new govt

joint opposition
The joint opposition has said that its leaders have finalized the plan to form a new federal government after preliminary consultations.

Beside the formation of a new federal government, the opposition was reportedly set for the election of the new prime minister after the Supreme Court restored the National Assembly and ordered to hold voting on the no-trust motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan.

A possible new federal government will be constituted in the form of a national government in which all opposition parties will be given proportional representation.

At present, it is being considered that in case a new government is formed, its term should be at least six months or one year.

During this period, electoral reforms and other important legislations related to accountability laws can be passed.

A reasonable time will be given to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to complete the delimitation of constituencies before holding general elections.

Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, who is the opposition’s candidate for new prime minister, will announce his possible government priorities after taking the oath.

Among the priorities of the new possible federal government is the formulation of economic policy to control inflation and stop the devaluation of the currency.

The new setup will also review the foreign policy with the aim to establish relations with all countries on equal footings while focusing on peace and not war. Other measures including relief packages for the public will be on the agenda.

As per media, the upcoming set up will take legal action to close the cases filed against opposition leaders on the basis of victimisation.

A constitutional route will be taken to replace the president and the governors of the four provinces.

The decisions of Premier Imran Khan's government could be reviewed and changed.

An immediate action plan will be worked out for the return of Nawaz Sharif and Ishaq Dar after consultations and a review of the political situation.

Russia suspended from UN rights body

UN rights body
The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday suspended Russia from the UN Human Rights Council over reports of "gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights" in Ukraine, prompting Moscow to announce it was quitting the body.

The US-led push garnered 93 votes in favour, while 24 countries voted no and 58 countries abstained. A two-thirds majority of voting members in the 193-member General Assembly in New York — abstentions do not count — was needed to suspend Russia from the 47-member Geneva-based Human Rights Council.

Speaking after the vote, Russia's deputy UN Ambassador Gennady Kuzmin described the move as an "illegitimate and politically motivated step" and then announced that Russia had decided to quit the Human Rights Council altogether.

Read More: Act immediately on Russia or dissolve UN: Zelensky

"You do not submit your resignation after you are fired," Ukraine's UN Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya told reporters.

Russia was in its second year of a three-year term. Under Thursday's resolution, the General Assembly could have later agreed to end the suspension. But that cannot happen now Russia has quit the council, just as the United States did in 2018 over what it called chronic bias against Israel and a lack of reform.

The United States was last year re-elected to the council. Suspensions are rare. Libya was suspended in 2011 because of violence against protesters by forces loyal to then-leader Muammar Gaddafi.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the United Nations "sent a clear message that the suffering of victims and survivors will not be ignored."

"We ensured a persistent and egregious human rights violator will not be allowed to occupy a position of leadership on human rights at the UN," she said in remarks to be delivered to the General Assembly later on Thursday.

The Human Rights Council cannot make legally binding decisions. Its decisions send important political messages, however, and it can authorise investigations. Last month the council opened an investigation into allegations of rights violations, including possible war crimes, in Ukraine.

The resolution on Thursday was the third adopted by the 193-member General Assembly since Russia invaded neighbouring Ukraine on February 24. The two previous General Assembly resolutions denouncing Russia were adopted with 141 and 140 votes in favour.

After abstaining on the previous two General Assembly votes, Russia's partner China opposed the resolution on Thursday.

"Such a hasty move at the General Assembly, which forces countries to choose sides, will aggravate the division among member states and intensify the confrontation between the parties concerned — it is like adding fuel to the fire," China's UN Ambassador Zhang Jun said before the vote.

The General Assembly text on Thursday expresses "grave concern at the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine," particularly at reports of rights abuses by Russia.

Russia says it is carrying out a "special military operation" that aims to destroy Ukraine's military infrastructure and denies attacking civilians. Ukraine and allies say Moscow invaded without provocation.

Russia had warned countries that a yes vote or abstention will be viewed as an "unfriendly gesture" with consequences for bilateral ties.

PM Imran Khan to address nation today

Supreme Court
Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Thursday that he has summoned a meeting of the federal cabinet on Friday after Supreme Court reinstated the national assembly, and ordered parliament to reconvene to hold a no-confidence vote.

The Supreme Court’s decision after four days of tense hearings came as a big blow to Khan, whose aides had described his actions as a masterstroke against the combined opposition.

Supreme Court on Thursday struck down National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri s controversial move to dismiss a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Khan.

The court, in its short order, ruled that the deputy speaker s ruling was "contrary to the Constitution and the law and of no legal effect, and the same are hereby set aside".

The apex court ruled that President Dr Arif Alvi s decision to dissolve the National Assembly was also "contrary to the Constitution and the law and of no legal effect", noting that the prime minister could not have advised the president to dissolve the assembly as he continues to remain under the bar imposed under clause (1) of Article 58 of the Constitution."

In a statement issued on Thursday, the prime minister said that he has also summoned a parliamentary committee meeting on Friday.

Imran Khan said that he will also address the nation on Friday evening. The PM said that he has always fought for Pakistan till the last ball and will fight even now.

Earlier, reacting to the decision of the Supreme Court, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry has said that this unfortunate decision has greatly aggravated the political crisis in Pakistan.

Amazon gathered information about sales trends by third parties at its website to develop private-label products, the Journal reported.

The House Judiciary Committee has been looking into Amazon’s practices since 2019, and has grilled founder Jeff Bezos and others on the topic during hearings.

They accused an Amazon executive of lying under oath by saying the company did not use any data from third-party vendors.

Amazon has denied the allegations, but failed to provide supporting documentation requested by elected officials, according to the commission.

The joint opposition said that the Constitution Day of Pakistan will be observed on April 8 across the country while a lawyer convention on protection of Constitution of Pakistan will also be held.

Samsung sees Q1 profit up 50% on memory chip prices, weak won

Samsung Electronics expects
Samsung Electronics expects operating profits for the first quarter to rise 50.3 percent, the South Korean tech giant said in a statement Thursday, despite global supply chain woes.

The world’s biggest smartphone maker forecast 2022 first-quarter operating profits of about 14.1 trillion won ($11.6 billion), up from 9.4 trillion won in the same quarter last year.

Read more: Starlink loses its frequency authorizations in France

Samsung did not provide details on the performance of its various divisions. The company is expected to release its full results on April 28.

Analysts said the forecast was likely driven by strong smartphone sales, but warned of an expected drop in profits in the memory chip division.

"Price decline in memory chips will be contained on the back of stronger than expected demand," Kim Un-ho, an analyst at IBK Investment & Securities, said in a report.

Profits in Samsung’s mobile business are expected to soar by 55.8 percent compared with Q4 to over 4.1 trillion won, offsetting an anticipated six percent decline in profits from its memory chips division, the report said.

With memory chips now used in a wide-ranging array of devices and cloud servers -- essential for remote working in the pandemic era -- the sector has become less dependent on seasonally-driven demand for gadgets such as smartphones and laptops.

Last year saw a surge in chip prices amid strong demand for those used in personal devices and data centres, helping Samsung hit record annual sales.

Going forward, Kim forecast the conglomerate would make 60.5 trillion won in operating profits for 2022 overall, a 17 percent increase on-year.

Azam to Khawaja: Five Things We Learned From Australia's Pakistan Tour

Australian cricketers
Australian cricketers were heading home Wednesday after completing their first tour to Pakistan since 1998. Pat Cummings side won the three-Test series 1-0, lost the one-day internationals 2-1 and rounded off an incident-free trip with victory in the lone Twenty20 international.

AFP Sports highlights five things we learned from the first full tour to Pakistan by a top Test playing nation since the fatal attack on a Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009.

safe to tour

A full-strength Australia squad were greeted by head of state-style security with hundreds of policemen and military personnel guarding their hotels and routes to the grounds.

The matches passed off without incident in Rawalpindi, Karachi and Lahore and the players, despite also being under strict Covid protocols, were even able to get out for a round of golf.

Pakistan will be hoping the successful Australian tour has paved the way for England and New Zealand to return after both called off series in Pakistan last year citing unspecified security concerns.

Pitches fail the Test

The Test series was blighted by flat pitches that offered nothing for the bowlers.

The opening match, on a Rawalpindi pitch deemed "below average" by the International Cricket Council, saw just 14 wickets fall as 1,187 runs were eked out in a bore draw.

The second Test pitch in Karachi was also slow and low and saw drama only in the final session of the final day when a late flurry of wickets saw Pakistan hang on for a draw.

Then it took Cummins bold declaration with almost two days play remaining in Lahore to earn Australia a win and the series on another placid pitch.

At least the batsmen-friendly surfaces made for more of a spectacle in the white ball games.

The highlight was Babar Azam and Imam-ul-Haq both scoring centuries as Pakistan thrillingly completed a record ODI run chase of 349 with an over to spare in Lahore to keep the series alive.

Be prepared

Australia were able to compete when they stepped into the unfamiliar territory of Pakistan because of meticulous research and preparation that even included studying domestic match performances in detail.

The result was an Australia squad able to cover every eventuality.

The tourists had variety in their spin and fast bowling options, and selected experienced batsmen who could adapt to the conditions -- including Pakistan-born Usman Khawaja, one of the tour s big success stories.

NA speaker writes letter to Imran Khan, Shahbaz for caretaker PM decision

Speaker of the National Assembly Asad Qaiser
Speaker of the National Assembly Asad Qaiser Wednesday wrote letters to Prime Minister Imran Khan and Leader of the Opposition Shahbaz Sharif for the appointment of a caretaker prime minister.

The speaker has written these letters under the powers assigned to him per Article 224A-1 of the Constitution.

Names of four members have been sought from both the leaders for the formation of the parliamentary committee.

Earlier this week, President Arif Alvi had sent letters to PM Imran Khan and Shahbaz Sharif to seek suggestions for the appointment of a caretaker prime minister for Pakistan; however, both leaders failed to reach a consensus.

According to NA rules, in case the two politicians can't reach a consensus over one name within three days, each one of them will send two names to the parliamentary committee responsible for appointing a caretaker prime minister.

The eight-member parliamentary committee, comprising National Assembly and Senate members, with equal representation from the government and Opposition, will be formed by the NA speaker.

“224A (1) In case the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly do not agree on any person to be appointed as the caretaker prime minister, within three days of the dissolution of the National Assembly, they shall forward two nominees each to a Committee to be immediately constituted by the Speaker of the National Assembly, comprising eight members of the outgoing National Assembly, or the Senate, or both, having equal representation from the Treasury and the Opposition, to be nominated by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, respectively,” Qaiser wrote in the letter.

Shahbaz will now nominate four members from the Opposition and PM Imran Khan will nominate an equal number of members from the treasury benches.

President Arif Alvi asks ECP to propose dates for general elections

President Dr Arif Alvi
President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday wrote a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan to propose dates for holding general elections in the country under Article 224(2) of the Constitution.

The development comes after the National Assembly deputy speaker threw out a no-confidence motion against PM Imran and the president dissolved the lower house of Parliament on the former's advice on April 3.

The Supreme Court is currently hearing the matter to decide the legality of the deputy speaker's ruling and the subsequent actions and orders of the prime minister and the president.

The president's letter to the ECP stated that under Article 48(5)(A) and Article 224(2) of the Constitution, the president had to appoint a date, not later than 90 days from the date of dissolution of the National Assembly, for holding general elections.

"In order to carry out the mandate of the Constitution of announcing the date of general elections, consultation with the Election Commission is required under Section 57(1) of the Elections Act, 2017," the letter added.

Shehbaz asks COAS, DG ISI to bring forth evidence of opp's 'treason'

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif urged the chief of army staff and director general for Inter-Services Intelligence on Tuesday to bring forth evidence of the opposition's 'treason'.

The opposition leader's remarks came following Prime Minister Imran Khan's claim that the opposition leaders tabled the no-confidence motion against him to back a 'foreign country's' designs against him.

The PML-N leader maintained that Pakistan was facing economic ruin because of the incumbent government’s actions.

“This is the same Imran Niazi who refused to remove the French ambassador, citing economic ruin and claimed that the European Union would be angered by the ambassador’s removal,” he said.

According to Shehbaz, the “same Imran” had now sacrificed the interests of Pakistan for his own sake and was “ready to sacrifice everything for his own self”.

“If we did commit the crime, all evidence will come to light,” he said, requesting the Supreme Court to also investigate the matter.

Shehbaz further maintained that the opposition had been calling the current government “fake” for the past three years and that they were only called ‘traitors’ after they launched the no-trust move against Imran Khan.

The PML-N leader further stated that he had not received any letter from President Dr Arif Alvi regarding the appointment of an interim prime minister, after the president dissolved the National Assembly two days ago.

Shehbaz dubbed both President Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan as violators of the Constitution.

The PML-N president as the former Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly had to propose an interim premier, along with Imran Khan, under 224 A of the Constitution of Pakistan.

Yesterday, President Arif Alvi claimed that he had written a letter to PM Imran and Shehbaz to "propose a suitable person for appointment". However, Shehbaz said that he had received no such letter.

On April 3, President Alvi dissolved the National Assembly on the advice of Prime Minister Imran Khan, hours after the National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri declared the opposition’s no-confidence motion “unconstitutional” and prorogued the house without voting on it.

The prime minister advised the president to dissolve the assembly under Article 58 of the Constitution. Imran took the decision of sending the summary after accusing the joint opposition of working with the United States to overthrow his government.

Russia faces global outrage over bodies in Ukraine’s streets

Russia faces global outrage over bodies in Ukraine’s streets
Moscow faced global revulsion and accusations of war crimes on Monday after the Russian pullout from the outskirts of Kyiv revealed streets strewn with corpses of what appeared to be civilians, some of whom had seemingly been killed at close range.

The grisly images of battered bodies out in the open or in hastily dug graves led to calls for tougher sanctions against the Kremlin, namely a cutoff of fuel imports from Russia. Germany reacted by expelling 40 Russian diplomats, and Lithuania threw out its Russian ambassador.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy left the capital, Kyiv, for his first reported trip since the war began nearly six weeks ago to see for himself what he called the genocide and war crimes in the town of Bucha, the site of some of the horrors.

Dead people have been found in barrels, basements, strangled, tortured, said Zelenskyy, who again called on Russia to move quickly to negotiate an end to the war.

European leaders and the United Nations human rights chief condemned the bloodshed, some of them also branding it genocide, and US President Joe Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin should face a war crimes trial.

This guy is brutal, and whats happening in Bucha is outrageous, said Biden, who also promised to increase sanctions against Moscow.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed the scenes outside Kyiv as a stage-managed anti-Russian provocation. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the images contained signs of video forgery and various fakes.” Russia similarly rejected previous allegations of atrocities as fabrications on Ukraine’s part.

Ukrainian officials said the bodies of 410 civilians were found in towns around Kyiv that were recaptured from Russian forces in recent days. The full extent of the bloodshed in the Kyiv area has yet to emerge. By all accounts, the horrors in the shattered southern port city of Mariupol are likely to be far worse.

This is a war of murders, a lot of blood. A lot of civilians are dying, said Natalia Svitlova, a refugee from Dnipro in eastern Ukraine who fled to Poland. I don’t understand why this is possible in the 21st century and why no one can stop it.

Moscow continued to press its offensive in eastern Ukraine, where little news has made it to the outside world since the war began Feb 24. Russia, in withdrawing from the capital area in recent days after being thwarted in its bid to capture Kyiv, has said its main focus now is gaining control the Donbas, the largely Russian-speaking industrial region in the country’s east that includes Mariupol.

US sought to punish 'disobedient' Imran Khan: Russia

PM Imran Khan and
Russia has lambasted "another attempt of shameless interference" by the United States in the internal affairs of Pakistan, adding that it sought to punish a "disobedient" Imran Khan.

In a statement, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Russia had noted that President Dr Arif Alvi dissolved the National Assembly on April 3 on the prime minister's advice as well as the events preceding it.

"Immediately after the announcement of the working visit of Imran Khan to Moscow on February 23-24 this year, the Americans and their Western associates began to exert rude pressure on the prime minister, demanding an ultimatum to cancel the trip," she said.

"When he nevertheless came to us, [Lu] called the Pakistani ambassador in Washington and demanded that the visit be immediately interrupted, which was also rejected," she stated.

"According to the Pakistani media, on March 7 this year, in a conversation with Pakistani Ambassador Asad Majid, a high-ranking American official (presumably the same Donald Lu) sharply condemned the balanced reaction of the Pakistani leadership to the events in Ukraine and made it clear that partnerships with the United States are possible only if Imran Khan is removed from power," Zakharova said.

The Russian official said that further development of the situation left no doubt that the US "decided to punish the 'disobedient' Imran Khan", noting how lawmakers from within the PTI switched sides to the opposition while the no-confidence vote was submitted to Parliament.

"This is another attempt of shameless US interference in the internal affairs of an independent state for its own selfish purposes. The above facts eloquently testify to this," Zakharova said.

"The [Pakistan] prime minister himself has repeatedly stated that the conspiracy against him was inspired and financed from abroad. We hope that Pakistani voters will be informed about these circumstances when they come to the elections, which should be held within 90 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly," she said.

The statement from Russia's foreign ministry comes after PM Imran named US Assistant Secretary of State for Central and South Asia Donald Lu as the official who made "threatening remarks" about his regime in a letter, which the premier had brandished during a public rally in Islamabad last month.

Last month, the National Security Committee, which includes all services chiefs, had decided to issue a "strong demarche" over the letter, terming it "blatant interference in the internal affairs of Pakistan".

Imran has alleged that the no-confidence motion against him is part of the "foreign conspiracy" to oust him from power.

On April 3, NA Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri had thrown out the no-trust motion against Imran, declaring that “circumstances show there is a nexus between the no-confidence motion, foreign intervention and the activities of the state’s representatives deputed to Pakistan”.

Imran had visited Moscow in February on a two-day trip which focused primarily on energy cooperation. However, his visit raised eyebrows as it coincided with Russia's military onslaught of Ukraine.

At the time, the government said it had consulted all concerned quarters before going ahead with the trip, which had been scheduled months in advance.

During his trip, Imran had conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin that he regretted the situation developing between Russia and Ukraine, adding that Islamabad had hoped that military conflict could be averted through a diplomatic solution.

He had stressed that conflict was not in anyone’s interest and that developing countries were always hardest hit economically in case of conflict. “He underlined Pakistan’s belief that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy," said a communiqué issued after a meeting between the two leaders.

ECP says general elections not possible in three months: report

The Election Commission of Pakistan
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has said it is not possible to hold general elections within three months due to various legal and procedural challenges.

According to the publication, a senior ECP official said that preparations for the general elections would require around six months, citing recent delimitation of constituencies and bringing district and constituency-wise electoral rolls in conformity as major hurdles in early elections.

He was quoted as saying that “delimitation is a time-consuming exercise where the law provides for one month’s time just to invite objections, another one month was required to address the same.”

The publication reported that the senior ECP official said a “minimum of three months would be required to complete the exercise, followed by another gigantic task of updating voters’ lists.”

Moreover, some other challenges include:

Procurement of election material

Arrangement for ballot papers

Appointment and training of polling staff

According to the law, a ballot paper with a watermark is to be used which is not available in the country and would have to be imported.

The official disclosed that the ECP had proposed to “amend the law to provide for ballot papers with a security feature, instead of the watermark.”

He further said that inviting bids and scrutinising financial and technical quotations would also require some time.

Shedding light on the issue regarding the procurement of election material, he said for around 100,000 polling stations, nearly two million stamp pads would be required.

“This is just one example, other material in huge quantities, including scissors and ballpoints, will also have to be procured,” he said.

Commenting on the legal challenges of holding a general election within three months, the ECP official said that under Section 14 of the Elections Act, the ECP was to announce an election plan four prior to the polls. He said the law requiring the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and giving overseas Pakistanis voting rights also held the field and had to be repealed.

The official said the commission had already announced the schedule for local government (LG) elections in Balochistan, setting May 29 as the polling day, while the process was also underway to hold LG polls in Punjab, Sindh and Islamabad.

“We will have to drop the plan for LG polls if general elections are to be conducted,” he noted.

US once again strongly refutes PM Imran Khan's allegations

US State Department spokesman Ned Price
The US State Department has once again spurned Prime Minister Imran Khan’s allegations of toppling his government through a no-trust motion by funding the Opposition.

On March 27, at a jalsa, the PM accused the US of interfering in Pakistan’s politics and plotting to oust his regime through a no-trust motion in the National Assembly.

As proof, the PM also brandished a ‘threat letter’ at a public gathering, saying that a foreign country has warned of dire consequences if he remains in power.

Following the Opposition's ruckus on the ‘threat letter’, the PM had called the National Security Committee (NSC) and presented the letter. To this, the NSC expressed concern and a demarche was issued to the US envoy in Pakistan.

Subsequently, based on this ‘threat letter’, the deputy speaker rejected the no-trust motion against the PM and President Arif Alvi dissolved the NA on the PM’s advice. However, this act turned into a deep constitutional crisis as the matter is in the Supreme Court now.

Earlier, the US State Department and White House categorically rejected PM’s allegations and said the US government has nothing to do with it.

Despite the earlier rejection, the US has once again refuted PM Imran Khan’s allegations over the US government involvement.

During a regular press briefing, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price rejected the allegation and said, “The US believes in democratic principle, not only in Pakistan but around the world.”

“There is no truth to the allegation as you heard from me last week, we support the peaceful upholding of constitutional democratic principle,” he added.

Ned Price further maintained that the US never supports one political party as it encourages broader principles.

“We do not support one political party over another, we support the broader principles, the principles of rule, of law, and equal justice under the law,” he said.

Imran Khan's rule has ended, he has no idea what happened to him: Bilawal

PPP-Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari
PPP-Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Monday said that Naya Pakistan came to an end, but Imran Khan has no idea what just happened to him.

Addressing a rally of his party workers in Sukkar, Bilawal said that despite his rule coming to an end, Imran Khan and his supporters are celebrating the occasion.

"Imran Khan has no idea what has just happened to him," Bilawal said, adding that the Opposition has finally held the former, PTI-led government accountable.

He went on to say that throughout its tenure, the PTI government and the "selected" premier had badly hurt Pakistan.

"Imran Khan's government made every institution of the country controversial," Bilawal said. "State institutions belong to every Pakistani, not Imran Khan."

Speaking about the decision of the National Assembly's deputy speaker to bar the Opposition from voting on the no-confidence motion against the prime minister Sunday, Bilawal said that instead of facing the competition, "Imran Khan chose to flee as he is a coward".

"He ran away from the no-confidence motion; he fled from the battlefield," Bilawal maintained. "But while running, he has also violated the Consitution of the country."

The PPP chairman said that just to stay as the prime minister of the country for two weeks, Imran Khan violated the Constitution of the country.

Speaking about the importance of the Constitution, Bilawal said that the Parliament and all state institutions exist because of the Constitution.

"Does the Constitution of Pakistan has no value?" he questioned. "Is it only a piece of paper? It seems like for Imran Khan, the Constitution is nothing but a piece of paper."

He said that the judiciary must endure that the Constitution of the country is protected. "If we want to make Pakistan stable, we will have to ensure that the Constitution is preserved and the rule of law prevails.

"PPP jiyalas want this puppet of a prime minister to go home," he said, adding that his party had been insisting since February 27 that the no-confidence motion would succeed.

"We asked him to face the vote of no-confidence, but this coward was not ready to do that. Our jiyalas will fight against all undemocratic elements in the country," he said.

Bilawal also said that irrespective of the decision of the Supreme Court, Imran Niazi won't be able to survive in the world of politics.

PM Imran questions why Opposition approached SC after elections were announced

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan questioned the Opposition, asking why they approached the Supreme Court (SC) after fresh elections were announced.

His remarks came while holding a live Q&A session on Monday, during which he criticised the Opposition for running away from the elections, saying that the Opposition is scared of PTI's popularity.

“When elections were announced, what is the Opposition doing in the Supreme Court? The Opposition wants an NRO II,” he said in his opening remarks.

The premier said the country will never move towards development unless Parliament has people who actually think about the country's betterment.

"We will give tickets to people with vision this time. We did not know how to contest in elections [earlier], but now we do," the PM said.

PM Imran Khan said that forming a government by buying members is a negation of democracy. He went on to say the Opposition has been saying for three and a half years that the government has failed and that the government is "selected".

“We have now announced the election at the request of the Opposition," he added.

He said that there are corruption cases against them and they want NRO II.

Talking about the external conspiracy to overthrow the government, the PM asked the people to protest outside the Red Zone today.

PTI proposes ex-CJP Gulzar Ahmed as caretaker prime minister

Ex-CJP Gulzar Ahmed
The Core Committee of PTI has proposed the name of former chief justice Gulzar Ahmed as the caretaker prime minister, ex-information and law minister Fawad Chaudhry said Monday.

The proposal of Gulzar — who laid down his robes on February 1, 2022 — comes after President Arif Alvi had sent letters to Prime Minister Imran Khan and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif to seek suggestions for the appointment of a caretaker prime minister.

In case the two politicians can't reach a consensus over one name within three days, each one of them will send two names to the parliamentarian committee responsible for appointing a caretaker prime minister.

The eight-member parliamentary committee, comprising National Assembly and Senate members, with equal representation from the government and Opposition, will be formed by the NA speaker.

PTI Chairman Imran Khan will continue as the prime minister despite being de-notified as the premier, till the appointment of a caretaker prime minister, the President’s Secretariat said in a presser issued after Sunday midnight.

“Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi shall continue as Prime Minister till the appointment of caretaker Prime Minister under Article 224 A (4) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.”

Imran Khan was de-notified as the prime minister of Pakistan earlier on Sunday after the dissolution of the National Assembly, Cabinet Division's statement said.

Players with disabilities score in video game world

Carlos Vasquez is a master of video fighting game "Mortal Kombat" despite being unable to see the action on screen because he is blind. The Texas resident -- who relies on sound to time punches, kicks and dodges -- is among a chorus of voices calling for better access to gaming for people with disabilities.

"You have two characters across the screen fighting each other, left and right, and you just have to memorize the buttons," said Vasquez, explaining what drew him to "Mortal Kombat".

Long neglected by the industry, the issue of accessibility is increasingly front of mind for game makers. There are financial as well as ethical reasons for opening doors to even more players in the multi-billion dollar industry.

According to the World Health Organization, more than a billion people live with some form of disability. Microsoft, the tech powerhouse behind Xbox and its cloud game streaming service, estimates that there are some 400 million players with disabilities.

Vasquez’s prowess caught the attention of "Mortal Kombat" maker NetherRealm Studios owned by Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment.

At his suggestion, the studio added audio cues to help blind gamers identify objects that they can interact with in the game.

West, Russia mull nuclear steps in a ‘more dangerous’ world

russia ukraine conflict
Russia’s assault on Ukraine and its veiled threats of using nuclear arms have policymakers, past and present, thinking the unthinkabl. The default U.S. policy answer, say some architects of the post-Cold War nuclear order, is with discipline and restraint. That could entail stepping up sanctions and isolation for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Rose Gottemoeller, deputy secretary-general of NATO from 2016 to 2019.

But no one can count on calm minds to prevail in such a moment, and real life seldom goes to plan. World leaders would be angry, affronted, fearful. Miscommunication and confusion could be rife.

Hackers could add to the chaos. Demands would be great for tough retaliation — the kind that can be done with nuclear-loaded missiles capable of moving faster than the speed of sound.

“And, you know, soon enough, you’ve just had a global thermonuclear war,” Oliker said. It’s a scenario officials hope to avoid, even if Russia targets Ukraine with a nuclear bomb.

Gottemoeller, a chief U.S. nuclear negotiator with Russia for the Obama administration, said that the outlines that President Joe Biden has provided so far of his nuclear policy stick with those of past administrations in using atomic weapons only in “extreme circumstances.”

“And a single Russian nuclear use demonstration strike, or -- as horrific as it would be -- a nuclear use in Ukraine, I do not think would rise to that level” of demanding a U.S. nuclear response, said Gottemoeller, now a lecturer at Stanford University.

For former Sen. Sam Nunn, a Georgia Democrat who over nearly a quarter-century in Congress helped shape global nuclear policy, the option of Western nuclear use has to remain on the table.

“That’s what the doctrine of mutual assured destruction has been about for a long, long time,” said Nunn, now strategic adviser to the Nuclear Threat Initiative security organization, which he co-founded.

Earthquake jolts in Malakand, surrounding areas

On PM Imran Khan's advice, President Arif Alvi approves dissolution of assembly

National Assembly
In a surprise move, Prime Minister Imran Khan Sunday said that he has advised President Arif Alvi to dissolve all the assemblies.

His brief public address was telecast shortly after a crucial National Assembly session that was set to vote on the no-confidence motion against him was abruptly adjourned as the deputy speaker deemed the no-trust vote "unconstitutional". The premier skipped the NA session.

Pleased with the NA deputy speaker's ruling, the premier congratulated the nation over the development.

“The NA speaker has rejected the move intended at changing the regime and I congratulate the entire nation on it.”

“Pakistan came into existence on 27th Ramzan, and this nation will not let such a conspiracy get successful."

The prime minister said that all the money spent on buying loyalties will get wasted. He told the people who have taken this money that they still have the chance to spend it on charity.

He told the nation to prepare for elections.

“No foreign power or any corrupt elements, but only you have to decide for this country.”
