Anderson takes five as India 107 all out at stumps
James Anderson took five wickets as India were bowled out for just 107 come the close of the second day of the second Test against England at Lord´s on Friday.

Anderson´s haul left England´s all-time leading Test wicket-taker just one shy of becoming the first bowler to take 100 Test wickets at Lord´s.

Meanwhile Chris Woakes marked his return to international cricket with two wickets for 19 runs in six overs, removing both India captain Virat Kohli (24) and Hardik Pandya (11) via slip catches by Jos Buttler.

Much of the second day was lost to rain, which washed out the whole of Thursday´s play.

But the 35.2 overs that England bowled after winning the toss were enough for them to dismiss India, with Anderson ending the day´s play when Ishant Sharma was lbw for nought.

Anderson took five for 20 in 13.2 overs while Ravichandran Ashwin top-scored for India with 29.

England lead this five-match series 1-0 after a 31-run victory in the first Test at Edgbaston last week.

The documents, a copy of which are available with Geo News, state that the MNA-elect owns a garment business.

They further stated that Zafar owns immovable properties worth Rs10 million as well as two houses and agricultural land worth Rs12 million.

The pictures of Zafar serving tea to people of his area were snapped ahead of the July 25 polls.

However, a viral video of him serving tea was recorded after the polls.

Moreover, Zafar had said, "This is my job and I have been appointed as the MNA from here."

"My target is to bring more children into politics as first there was a restriction on politics and there was FCR [Frontier Crimes Regulation],” he remarked.

Zafar had shared that his main focus would be to impart education to all and improve basic institutions.

NASA spacecraft ready to launch through Sun's burning atmosphere

NASA spacecraft ready to launch through Sun's burning atmosphere
The first ever spacecraft to fly directly toward the Sun is poised to blast off today, on a mission to plunge into our star's sizzling atmosphere and unlock the mysteries of the center of the solar system.

NASA's car-sized, $1.5 billion Parker Solar Probe is scheduled to launch on a Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida during a 65-minute launch window that opens at 3:33 am (0733 GMT).

By coming closer to the Sun than any spacecraft in history, the unmanned probe's main goal is to unveil the secrets of the corona, the unusual atmosphere around the Sun.

"We are going to be in an area that is so exciting, where solar wind — we believe — will be accelerating," said NASA planetary science division director Jim Green.

"Where we see huge magnetic fields that are passing by us, as coronal mass ejections make their way out into the solar system."

Not only is the corona about 300 times hotter than the Sun's surface, but it also hurls powerful plasma and energetic particles that can unleash geomagnetic space storms, wreaking havoc on Earth by disrupting the power grid.

But these solar outbursts are poorly understood.

"The Parker Solar Probe will help us do a much better job of predicting when a disturbance in the solar wind could hit Earth," said Justin Kasper, a project scientist and professor at the University of Michigan.

Knowing more about the solar wind and space storms will also help protect future deep space explorers as they journey toward the Moon or Mars.

'Full of mysteries'

The probe is protected by an ultra-powerful heat shield that is just 4.5 inches (11.43 centimeters) thick.

The shield should enable the spacecraft to survive its close shave with the fiery star, coming within 3.83 million miles (6.16 million kilometers) of the Sun's surface.

The heat shield is built to withstand radiation equivalent to up to about 500 times the Sun's radiation on Earth.

Even in a region where temperatures can reach more than a million degrees Fahrenheit, the sunlight is expected to heat the shield to just around 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,371 degrees Celsius).

Scorching, yes? But if all works as planned, the inside of the spacecraft should stay at just 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

The goal for the Parker Solar Probe is to make 24 passes through the corona during its seven-year mission.

"The sun is full of mysteries," said Nicky Fox, project scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab.

"We are ready. We have the perfect payload. We know the questions we want to answer."

91-year-old namesake

The tools on board will measure the expanding corona and continually flowing atmosphere known as the solar wind, which solar physicist Eugene Parker first described in 1958.

Parker, now 91, recalled that at first some people did not believe in his theory.

But then, the launch of NASA's Mariner 2 spacecraft in 1962 — becoming the first robotic spacecraft to make a successful planetary encounter — proved them wrong.

"It was just a matter of sitting out the deniers for four years until the Venus Mariner 2 spacecraft showed that, by golly, there was a solar wind," Parker said earlier this week.

Parker said he was "impressed" by the Parker Solar Probe, calling it "a very complex machine."

Scientists have wanted to build a spacecraft like this for more than 60 years, but only in recent years did the heat shield technology advance enough to be capable of protecting sensitive instruments, according to Fox.

Tools on board will measure high-energy particles associated with flares and coronal mass ejections, as well as the changing magnetic field around the Sun.

"We will also be listening for plasma waves that we know flow around when particles move," Fox added.

"And last but not least, we have a white light imager that is taking images of the atmosphere right in front of the Sun."

When it nears the Sun, the probe will travel rapidly enough to go from New York to Tokyo in one minute — some 430,000 miles per hour, making it the fastest human-made object.

SC issues notices to Nawaz, Aslam Beg and Asad Durrani in Asghar Khan case

SC issues notices to Nawaz, Aslam Beg and Asad Durrani in Asghar Khan case
The Supreme Court on Saturday issued notices to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, former army chief General Mirza Aslam Beg and former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) DG Lieutenant General Asad Durrani in the Asghar Khan case.

DG Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the attorney general have also been issued notices to appear before the apex court on August 15.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar will hear the case on Wednesday.

On June 2, the Supreme Court had issued notices to Nawaz and senior politician Javed Hashmi as well as 19 other civilians named in the case to appear before it.

In a reply submitted to the Supreme Court on June 9, the former prime minister had denied allegations of receiving Rs3.5 million for his 1990 election campaign.

The case

On October 19, 2012, the Supreme Court issued a 141-page verdict, ordering legal proceedings against Gen (retd) Aslam Beg and Lt Gen (retd) Asad Durrani in a case filed 16 years ago by former air chief Air Marshal Asghar Khan.

Khan, who passed away in January this year, was represented in the Supreme Court by renowned lawyer Salman Akram Raja.

Khan had petitioned the Supreme Court in 1996 alleging that the two senior army officers and the then-president Ghulam Ishaq Khan had doled out Rs140 million among several politicians ahead of the 1990 polls to ensure Benazir Bhutto's defeat in the polls.

The Islamic Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI), consisting of nine parties including the Pakistan Muslim League, National Peoples Party and Jamaat-e-Islami, had won the 1990 elections, with Nawaz Sharif being elected prime minister. The alliance had been formed to oppose the Benazir Bhutto-led Pakistan Peoples Party.

In 1996, Khan had written a letter to the then Supreme Court Chief Justice Nasim Hassan Shah naming Beg, Durrani and Younis Habib, the ex-Habib Bank Sindh chief and owner of Mehran Bank, about the unlawful disbursement of public money and its misuse for political purposes.

The 2012 apex court judgment, authored by the then-Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry, had directed the Federal Investigation Agency to initiate a transparent investigation and subsequent trial if sufficient evidence is found against the former army officers.

‘Suicidal’ man steals and crashes empty plane from Seattle airport

‘Suicidal’ man steals and crashes empty plane from Seattle airport
Two military F-15 jets were scrambled late Friday after a 'suicidal' airline worker stole and later crashed an empty passenger plane from the Seattle-Tacoma airport, local officials said.

Local authorities quickly ruled out terrorism as a motive for the incident, and said the F-15s "were not involved in the crash."

An airline employee "conducted an unauthorised takeoff" of an airplane carrying no passengers at the major airport in the northwestern US state of Washington, airport officials said on Twitter.

The aircraft "crashed in south Puget Sound," Sea-Tac Airport said, adding that normal operations at the transport hub had resumed after a pause.

"This is not a terrorist incident. Confirmed info... this is a single suicide male. We know who he is. No others involved," the Pierce County Sheriff said.

The suspect was identified as a 29-year-old Pierce county resident who "acted alone," the sheriff's office added, confirming that there were "no passengers on the plane" when it crashed.

Video taken by a bystander showed the airplane making a loop, then flying low over a body of water.

Alaska Airlines on Twitter said the airplane was a turboprop Q400 airplane belonging to its sister carrier Horizon Air.

Local media described the man who stole the plane as a mechanic.

Four, including two police, killed in Canada shooting

Four, including two police, killed in Canada shooting
Two police officers were among four people killed Friday in a shooting in eastern Canada and a suspect has been arrested, authorities said.

Residents of the Brookside neighborhood of Fredericton, New Brunswick reported waking to the sounds of multiple gunshots.

Witnesses described to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) seeing the barrel of a rifle or shotgun poking out from the window of a low-rise apartment building and firing into a courtyard, while the bodies of two officers lay on the ground nearby.

Heavily armed police, paramedics and firefighters quickly descended on the scene and a lockdown of the neighborhood was ordered, trapping some early risers in daycare facilities, coffee shops and other businesses.

Others were seen being escorted by police from their homes — some still in pyjamas — to safety beyond a police cordon.

Authorities in the provincial capital initially urged people in the Brookside neighborhood to stay indoors, describing an "active incident" on Twitter.

Around an hour after giving first word of the killings, a second and then a third message from police said: "At this time, we can confirm that we have one suspect in custody" and "of the four people killed in this morning's shootings on Brookside Drive, two were Fredericton police officers."

Then came word that the threat had been neutralised, the lockdown was lifted and the police cordon was shrunk to a few blocks: "We can confirm that there is no further threat to the public, and lockdowns are not required at this time."

Also, police added: "We can confirm that the suspect in custody is currently being treated for serious injuries related to this morning's shooting incident."

The circumstances of the shooting in Fredericton, about 75 kilometers (45 miles) from the border between Canada and the US state of Maine, were not immediately clear.

The shooting happened in a sleepy residential area of the city north of downtown.

Public broadcaster CBC quoted Robert DiDiodato, who lives in the area, as saying he heard a series of "firecracker" sounds around 7 am.

"With the tempo, it might´ve been a gunshot," he said. "It was sort of like a pop, pop, pop, pop."

He said that about five minutes later he could hear similar sounds near his home.

"Doors are locked and everybody's inside," he said, according to CBC.

Another resident, who gave his name only as Justin, told the broadcaster: "I woke up and I heard gunshots and I looked outside my window.

"The cops were trying to put one of the officers in their vehicle to take them out to safety," he said, adding that he tried to help but was told by the officers to take cover.

Another resident, Pierre Huard, told Radio-Canada he initially thought the sounds were "children playing with firecrackers."

The mass shooting is the second in the province in recent years, and comes only weeks after a man opened fire on July 22 in a bustling nightlife district of Toronto, killing an 18-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl, and wounding 13 other people.

The latter triggered a public debate on rising gun violence and gangs in Canadian cities, and calls for a handgun ban.

"Awful news coming out of Fredericton," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a Twitter message.

"My heart goes out to everyone affected by this morning's shooting. We're following the situation closely," he said.

In 2014, three federal police officers were killed and two more were injured after responding to an emergency call about an armed man roaming a residential neighbourhood of nearby Moncton, New Brunswick.

A 28-hour manhunt ensued before police caught up to the suspect and arrested him, in what was described as the second-deadliest attack on the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) since four officers were ambushed on a Mayerthorpe, Alberta farm in 2005.

Ancient Mayan skeletons dating back 7,000 years discovered in Mexican cave

Ancient Mayan skeletons dating back 7,000 years discovered in Mexican cave
Ancient Mayan remains thought to be up to 7,000 years old have been discovered by archaeologists in Mexico.

Three skeletons were found in the Puyil cave, in the Tacotalpa municipality of Tabasco state, which is in the south of the country.

One of them is estimated to date back seven millennia, while the other two are thought to be 4,000 years old.

Researchers said the oldest of the skeletons was from a period when humans were transitioning from hunting to a more sedentary lifestyle.

Archaeologist Alberto Martos said: “Seven thousand years old is when we’ve just placed it, which is the period of transition from being hunters to sedentarism.

“There were different groups during this time that used the caves, clearly it wasn’t a domestic cave.

“In prehistoric times it was probably used for rituals and cemeteries so as to dispose of remains of people.

“For the Maya, it was a cave of ancestors.

“This cave was used by the Maya, they respected the remains that were already there and left their own remains inside.”

Indonesian Islands Were Shaken in Quake

Indonesian Islands Were Shaken in Quake. Tourists’ Confidence Was, Too.
GILI TRAWANGAN, Indonesia — On the evening the earthquake struck the tiny island of Gili Trawangan, it was easy to panic. The ground swayed and the lights went out. Walls fell over and windows broke. At least one small hotel collapsed.

The government issued a tsunami warning, and thousands of tourists and workers rushed to safety atop the island’s only hill. The warning was canceled soon after but the refugees stayed put through the night, tormented by aftershocks and barely sleeping.

The next day, hundreds of anxious tourists and workers crowded the main beach on Gili Trawangan and waited hours for rescue boats to arrive. Videos of the scene — and foreigners’ complaints of a slow government response — went viral.

“When the earthquake happened, everybody was in a panic,” said Guntur Sakti, a spokesman for Indonesia’s Tourism Ministry. “It was even more chaotic when there were rumors about a tsunami. People wanted to flee. But to expect us to provide boats to evacuate them right at that moment, that was not possible.”

Tensions Between Turkey and U.S. Soar as Trump Orders New Sanctions

Tensions Between Turkey and U.S. Soar as Trump Orders New Sanctions
ISTANBUL — A worsening dispute between the United States and Turkey reverberated through the global economy on Friday, hastening a broad flight of money from emerging markets and sowing instability throughout the Middle East as relations between the NATO allies neared a breaking point.

The immediate crisis — accelerated by a hostile tweet from President Trump — flared over Turkey’s continued detention of an American pastor, Andrew Brunson, who was jailed 21 months ago in a widespread crackdown after a failed coup in Turkey.

But the outsize effect reflected deepening concerns over Turkey’s economic management by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was re-elected in June with near-authoritarian powers. It also increased the risk that the problems in Turkey, which borders Iran, Iraq and Syria, could destabilize economies well beyond the region.

Turkey’s economy is only the 17th largest in the world, but its problems are worsening as Mr. Trump’s trade war is rattling global commerce, damaging longtime alliances and threatening economic growth worldwide.

Israeli bullets take two more Palestinian lives in Gaza

Israeli bullets take two more Palestinian lives in Gaza
Israeli forces have opened fire on Palestinians taking part in a protest in the area between the occupied territories and the besieged Gaza Strip, leaving two people killed.

The Gaza Health Ministry said Abdullah al-Qotati, a young medic, was killed by Israeli fire east of the city of Khan Yunis in the southern part of the Gaza Strip on Friday.

The spokesmen for the ministry, Ashraf al-Qidra, added that Israeli forces also killed 55-year-old Ali Saeid al-Aloul east of the city of Rafah in southern Gaza.

According to the ministry, at least 307 Palestinians, including medics and journalists, were also injured during the protest.

Tensions have been running high near the fence since March 30, which marked the start of a series of protests dubbed “The Great March of Return.” Palestinian protesters demand the right to return for those driven out of their homeland.

The clashes in Gaza reached their peak on May 14, the eve of the 70th anniversary of Nakba Day, or the Day of Catastrophe, which coincided this year with Washington's relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem al-Quds.

Israeli fire has taken the lives of nearly 160 Palestinians since March 30. Nearly 15,000 Palestinians have also sustained injuries, of whom at least 360 are reportedly in critical condition.

On June 13, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, sponsored by Turkey and Algeria, condemning Israel for Palestinian civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip.

Gaza has been under Israeli siege since June 2007, causing a decline in living standards as well as unprecedented unemployment and poverty.

Israel has also launched several wars on the Palestinian sliver, the last of which began in early July 2014 and ended in late August the same year. The Israeli military aggression killed nearly 2,200 Palestinians and injured over 11,100 others.

On Thursday, Israeli aircraft bombed a multi-story building in Gaza City amid threats of another full-scale military offensive against the besieged coastal enclave.

Exercise linked to better mental health – but too much may do harm

Exercise linked to better mental health – but too much may do harm
The study included all types of physical activity, ranging from childcare, housework, lawn-mowing and fishing to cycling, going to the gym, running and skiing.

Exercise is known to bring health benefits by reducing the risk of illnesses such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, but its links with mental health were less clear.

Some evidence suggests exercise may improve mental health, but experts note that the relationship could go both ways – with inactivity being both a symptom of, and contributor to, poor mental health.

In this study, while the links between regular exercise and better mental health were clear, the researchers said they could not show cause and effect.

The research used data from 1.2 million adults across all 50 U.S. states who had been asked to estimate how often in the past 30 days they would rate their mental health as ‘not good’ based on stress, depression and emotional problems.

They were also asked how often they had exercised in the past 30 days outside of their regular job, as well as how many times a week or month they did this exercise and for how long.

The results were adjusted for age, race, gender, marital status, income, education, employment status, body mass, self-reported physical health and previous diagnosis of depression.

On average, participants had 3.4 days of poor mental health a month, the results showed. But compared to people who reported doing no exercise, people who exercised reported 1.5 fewer days of poor mental health a month – a reduction of 43 percent.

Among the 75 types of exercise recorded, all types were linked with better mental health. The strongest associations were seen for team sports, cycling, aerobic and gym exercise.

A study in the United States has found that people who exercise several times a week report having better mental health than those who take no exercise, with team sports and those involving social groups having the most positive effect.

The research also found that more exercise was not always better for psychological wellbeing, with people who exercise every day reporting lower levels of mental health.

Exercising for around 45 minutes three to five times a week was associated with the biggest benefits, according to results of the study published in The Lancet Psychiatry journal.

Scientists 'solve' mystery of Jupiter's colourful bands

Scientists 'solve' mystery of Jupiter's colourful bands
Scientists may have solved the mystery of Jupiter's colourful bands.

The gas giant Jupiter's famous bands of cloud have been observed by astronomers for more than 100 years, but until now scientists have not been sure how accurately they reflect what was happening deep inside the planet.

Now, a number-crunching study into how magnetic fields affect atmospheric flows has revealed that at their possible deepest, they never dive more than 3% into the planet itself.

Powerful jet streams flow east through the Jupiter's atmosphere - jet streams which last year NASA established move similar to Earth's.

Spectral analysis of the light reflecting from Jupiter has shown the bands are made of clouds of ammonia in the outer atmosphere, giving the planet its striking stripes of white, red, orange, brown and yellow.

Observations by researchers in Australia and the United States have now helped develop a picture of what's happening beneath these clouds.

Dr Navid Constantinou, from Australia's ANU research school of earth sciences, said: "We know a lot about the jet streams in Earth's atmosphere and the key role they play in the weather and climate, but we still have a lot to learn about Jupiter's atmosphere.

"Scientists have long debated how deep the jet streams reach beneath the surfaces of Jupiter and other gas giants, and why they do not appear in the sun's interior."

Evidence recently produced by NASA's spacecraft Juno, which conducted multiple fly-bys of the gas giant, suggested the jet streams reached up to 1,860 miles (3,000km) below Jupiter's clouds.

Another member of the research team, Dr Jeffrey Parker from Livermore National Laboratory in the US, said their theory showed how the jet streams were suppressed by the planet's magnetic field.

"The gas in the interior of Jupiter is magnetised, so we think our new theory explains why the jet streams go as deep as they do under the gas giant's surface but don't go any deeper," said Dr Parker.

The team compared their observations of Jupiter's bands with the ways that our own planet's atmosphere works.

"Earth's jet streams have a huge impact on the weather and climate by acting as a barrier and making it harder for air on either side of them to exchange properties such as heat, moisture and carbon," said Dr Constantinou.

Unlike the jet streams on Earth, which are wavy and irregular, those on Jupiter are relatively straight compared to its axis.

"There are no continents and mountains below Jupiter's atmosphere to obstruct the path of the jet streams," Dr Parker said.

Pakistan likely to borrow $4bn loan from Islamic Development Bank

Pakistan likely to borrow $4bn loan from Islamic Development Bank
Pakistan plans to borrow over $4 billion from the Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank to bolster the country's low level of foreign currency reserves.

The report said that two officials told the paper that the bank has agreed to make a formal offer after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan forms government as prime minister. The bank also expects Asad Umar, tipped for finance minister, to accept the offer.

In addition, a senior advisor in Islamabad said the paperwork is all in place. “The IDB is waiting for the elected government to take charge before giving their approval.”

He termed the amount an “important contribution.”

Another official at the State Bank of Pakistan, who was part of negotiations with the IDB, confirmed the loan had the backing of the Saudi government, “which wants to play a part in rescuing Pakistan from its present crisis.”

Umar has previously said that Pakistan must decide by the end of September if it would go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to bail out its economy.

He reiterated his stance that Pakistan was examining other options as well as the IMF, including loans from friendly countries or remittances from overseas Pakistanis.

He spoke a week after the US raised fears that Pakistan could use any bailout from the IMF to pay off debts to China.

Rain washes out first day in England-India 2nd Test

Rain washes out first day in England-India 2nd Test
Rain meant there was no play on the first day of the second Test between England and India at Lord´s on Thursday.

Early morning overcast skies in north London eventually gave way to gentle but persistent rain which was sufficient to ensure the pitch and square remained fully covered.

The match had been due to start at 11:00am (1000 GMT) but with rain still falling and the skies above Lord´s increasingly dark, the umpires called it a day at 4:50pm (1550 GMT).

It was the first time a whole day´s Test play in England had been lost to bad weather since August 24 2013 when the fourth day of the fifth Ashes clash at The Oval was abandoned without a ball bowled.

The last time a day´s Test play was washed out completely at Lord´s came 17 years ago when the scheduled opening day of the first Test against Pakistan was abandoned on May 17, 2001.

Officials later confirmed they would look to conduct the toss at 10:30am on Friday, with a view to an 11:00am start and that 98 overs, rather than the standard 90, would be scheduled for the second day in a bid to make-up lost playing time.

England lead the current five-match series 1-0 after a 31-run victory in the first Test at Edgbaston last week.

They will, however, make at least two changes to their side.

England captain Joe Root confirmed on Wednesday that Ollie Pope, a 20-year-old Surrey batsman, would make his Test debut in place of the dropped Dawid Malan.

Pope will become the fourth player under 21 to represent England in Test cricket this year, following Mason Crane, Dominic Bess and Sam Curran.

England will be without Ben Stokes at Lord´s because of the all-rounder´s ongoing trial for affray in Bristol.

Stokes took three wickets on Sunday´s fourth and last day at Edgbaston, including the prize scalp of India captain Virat Kohli.

England have yet to decide whether Chris Woakes, a fellow pace-bowling all-rounder, or off-spinner Moeen Ali will replace Stokes.

Neither England nor India, who might also make changes, are obliged to confirm their teams until the toss takes place.
