Fawad Chaudhry laments PDM over rallies during COVID-19

fawad ch
Federal Minister for Education Fawad Chaudhry lamented the alliance of opposition parties, Pakistan Democratic Party (PDM) over holding public gatherings in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and blamed that they are least concerned regarding the safety of the masses.

The political leadership should show some responsibility for securing the lives of the general public,” he said and blamed the opposition parties for only prioritizing cases against them rather than the lives of their activists.

They only want their cases to be shut and are least concerned with the lives of the masses, he said.

Fawad Chaudhry said that Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz were out of the system and therefore wants confrontation.

They want to give the sacrifice of an entire cow to get two kilograms of meat, he said and added that their protest would end if the government agrees to amend the NAB laws so that cases against them could be closed.

It is pertinent to mention here that on Friday, the local administration rejected a request from Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) to hold a public gathering at the Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore owing to rising COVID-19 cases in the provincial capital.

Deputy Commissioner Lahore Mudassar Riaz Malik while divulging details on the reasons behind the rejection of a request from the PDM, said that only 300 people are allowed to gather under the COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs). “Even this permission is for the wedding ceremonies,” he said.

He further said that they could not allow a public gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan owing to its status as a heritage site. “The ratio of COVID-19 spread in Lahore is witnessing an alarming surge,” he further said.

Trump campaign files election lawsuit in Georgia, suffers more legal defeats

Trump campaign files election lawsuit in Georgia, suffers more legal defeats
Donald Trump’s campaign said it filed a lawsuit in Georgia state court on Friday seeking to invalidate the presidential election results there, the latest in a series of legal challenges aimed at reversing his loss that have so far gone nowhere.

The Trump campaign said in a statement its new lawsuit would include sworn statements from Georgia residents alleging fraud.
Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, like Trump, and other state officials have said repeatedly they have found no evidence of widespread fraud in the Nov. 3 election won by Democrat Joe Biden.

Trump’s team and various individuals backing him have suffered a string of legal defeats around the country, including in cases filed in Nevada and Wisconsin that sought court orders to reverse those states’ election results.

President-elect Biden won the election with 306 Electoral College votes – against the 270 required – to Trump’s 232.

A district judge in Nevada on Friday dismissed a case brought by would-be Republican presidential electors and said they must pay defendants’ legal costs after failing “to meet their burden to provide credible and relevant evidence to substantiate” any of the lawsuit’s claims.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court in a 4-3 decision declined to act on a case that sought to have the court nullify the presidential election in the state and pave the way for the state legislature to choose Wisconsin’s 10 presidential electors.

“Such a move would appear to be unprecedented in American history,” Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Brian Hagedorn wrote in his concurring opinion of four justices issued on Friday.

Trump’s campaign has spent nearly $9 million on its unsuccessful bid to overturn the results of the election, including nearly $2.3 million to lawyers and consultants.

The campaign and the Republican National Committee have raised at least $207.5 million since Election Day, much of it from solicitations asking for donations to an “Official Election Defense Fund”.

The fine print made clear most of the money would go to other priorities through Trump’s new political action committee, which could fuel his future political endeavors.

France says Covid-19 vaccinations will be free

France says Covid-19 vaccinations will be free
Vaccinations against Covid-19 in France will be free, the prime minister said Thursday, and will begin in January for one million elderly in retirement homes, February for 14 million at-risk people and spring for the rest of the population.

Jean Castex said that thanks to orders already made at a European level, “France will have a potential of 200 million doses, which would allow 100 million people to be vaccinated” because the course requires two injections a few weeks apart.

The country’s vaccination campaign could even begin in the last days of December, he told a news conference, if EU and French health authorities have approved vaccines by then.

The government’s vaccine strategy would be presented to parliament this month, Castex said, emphasising that all decisions around it would be transparent.

France is one of the most vaccine-sceptic nations on Earth, with a survey on the weekend showing that only 41 percent of the 67 million population planned to get inoculated.

The government has set aside 1.5 billion euros ($1.8 million) for vaccinations in next year’s budget.

Castex also weighed into a debate around the New Year’s Eve celebrations, when gatherings are feared to send infections surging.

He said “it seems reasonable to us” to recommend no more than six adults at such gatherings, not including children.

The prime minister also highlighted that “the circulation of the virus continues to decline” with the number of daily cases expected to fall below an average of 10,000 in the days to come.

The coronavirus has killed more than 53,000 people in France.

China turns on nuclear-powered ‘artificial sun’

China turns on nuclear-powered ‘artificial sun’
China successfully powered up its “artificial sun” nuclear fusion reactor for the first time, state media reported Friday, marking a great advance in the country’s nuclear power research capabilities.

The HL-2M Tokamak reactor is China’s largest and most advanced nuclear fusion experimental research device, and scientists hope that the device can potentially unlock a powerful clean energy source.

It uses a powerful magnetic field to fuse hot plasma and can reach temperatures of over 150 million degrees Celsius, according to the People’s Daily — approximately ten times hotter than the core of the sun.

Located in southwestern Sichuan province and completed late last year, the reactor is often called an “artificial sun” on account of the enormous heat and power it produces.

“The development of nuclear fusion energy is not only a way to solve China’s strategic energy needs, but also has great significance for the future sustainable development of China’s energy and national economy,” said the People’s Daily.

Chinese scientists have been working on developing smaller versions of the nuclear fusion reactor since 2006.

They plan to use the device in collaboration with scientists working on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor — the world’s largest nuclear fusion research project based in France, which is expected to be completed in 2025.

Fusion is considered the Holy Grail of energy and is what powers our sun.

It merges atomic nuclei to create massive amounts of energy — the opposite of the fission process used in atomic weapons and nuclear power plants, which splits them into fragments.

Unlike fission, fusion emits no greenhouse gases and carries less risk of accidents or the theft of atomic material.

But achieving fusion is both extremely difficult and prohibitively expensive, with the total cost of ITER estimated at $22.5 billion.

Pakistan squad denied permission to train amid coronavirus fears

Pakistan squad denied permission to train amid coronavirus fears
The New Zealand Cricket authorities on Friday refused to grant an exemption for the training of the Pakistani squad during the managed isolation period.

New Zealand health department, in a statement, said that following careful consideration regarding coronavirus, the Director-General of Health has confirmed that he will not be granting the exemption which would allow the Pakistani Shaheens to return back in fields in order to train in groups while completing their time in managed isolation in Christchurch.

The decision has reportedly added frustration among Pakistan squad members which are already in managed isolation for almost 10 days now.

The team was supposed to receive the green flag for training after the 3rd day of testings, however, it was put on hold after reports of SOP breaches and positive results of six members of the team emerged from day one of testing.

The New Zealand Health authorities have repeatedly termed the exemption to train during the managed isolation period a "privilege".

Dr Ashley Bloomfield, the DG of health, while commenting on the decision said that he continues to have ongoing concerns about the risk of cross-infection within the squad.

“There have been a number of active cases identified among the team. Public health considerations will continue to be foremost in our response to COVID-19, whether this involves individuals or teams,” he asserted.

“We appreciate the touring team for enduring the challenges posed to public health by a coronavirus," he added.

The announcement is not less than a shock for green shirts as they were expecting exemption to be granted on Friday following the results of day nine testing.

Pakistan team has already competed 10 days in managed isolation and the period is set to end on December 8.

Thousands of Rohingya refugees relocated to remote island in Bangladesh

Thousands of Rohingya refugees relocated to remote island in Bangladesh
Some 1,600 Rohingya refugees have been shifted to the remote island of Bhasan Char in the Bay of Bengal. According to human rights groups, many people were not willing to relocate and were forced to move, BBC reported Friday.

Bangladesh, however, maintains that all the refugees willingly moved to the island and no one was coerced to do so. According to the government, relocating some of the refugees to Bhasan Char will ease the overcrowding in camps that house more than 1 million Rohingya, a Muslim minority group that fled Myanmar to escape persecution.

According to the report, Human Rights Watch interviewed 12 Rohingya families who said their names had been included in the list of refugees to be moved to Bhasan Char against their will.

In response to the move, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called on Bangladesh on Friday and asked it to uphold its commitment by ensuring that all those relocated to the remote Island have consented to the decision.

"UNHCR stood ready to evaluate conditions on the island to ensure that it is a “safe and sustainable place for refugees to live," if permitted by the government, UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch said, per Reuters.

Iranian scientist’s assassination contrary to international laws: SCO

Iranian scientist’s assassination contrary to international laws
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has vehemently censured the brutal assassination of top Iranian nuclear scientist Mohesn Fakhrizadeh, describing the terrorist act as contrary to international norms and laws.

In a statement released on Friday, the SCO member states strongly condemned the targeted killing of Fakhrizadeh and expressed hope that the perpetrators of the “cowardly act” would be identified and brought to justice.

“Such actions are not only against all norms of inter-governmental relations and international law but also threaten peace and stability in a fragile region,” the SCO said in the statement, also denouncing all destabilizing acts in the West Asia region, as well as terrorism, in any form or shape.

Fakhrizadeh, the head of the Iranian Defense Ministry’s Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research, was targeted in a multi-pronged terrorist attack by a number of assailants in Absard city of Tehran Province’s Damavand County on November 27.

Iranian government officials and military commanders have hinted that the Israeli regime, which has already murdered a number of Iran's scientific elites, was behind the recent terror attack, vowing harsh revenge against all the criminals involved.

An informed source has told Press TV that the remains of the weapon used in the assassination show that it was made in Israel, adding that the weapon collected from the site of the terrorist act bears the logo and specifications of the Israeli military industry.

The Iranian administration announced on Wednesday that the country’s Intelligence Ministry has identified the individuals involved in the assassination of Fakhrizadeh.

The targeted killing of the top nuclear scientist has drawn widespread condemnations from many countries.

Pakistan slams Fakhrizadeh's assassination

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry condemned in a statement on Thursday the assassination of Fakhrizadeh and said the heinous act was in breach of the norms of international relations and international law.

“The assassination of the Iranian scientist is not only contrary to the norms of relations between countries and international law, but also threatens the peace and stability of a region that is already tense,” read the statement.

The ministry underlined that, “The Pakistani government extends its condolences to the family of Iranian scientist Martyr Fakhrizadeh and to the people of the country.”

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry also called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and prevent escalation of tensions in the region.

Significant growth in home textiles, pharmaceuticals & other exports: Abdul Razak Dawood

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood on Thursday announced that several industrial exports in Pakistan have recently witnessed significant growth.

Sharing November 2020's provisional figures on his Twitter account, Dawood revealed that as compared to 2019, the exports of home textiles have grown by 20%, pharmaceutical products by 20%, rice by 14%, and surgical goods have witnessed an 11% growth in exports.

According to his tweets, other industrial exports which have seen a boost in the month of November include stockings and socks (41%), jerseys and pullovers (21%), women's garments (11%) and men’s garments (4.3%).

"This is in line with our policy of promotion of value-added exports and reflects a healthy trend," the adviser wrote.

Last month, the government said that Pakistan's key economic indicators have started showing results due to effective policies which fueled growth and enhanced remittances and foreign direct investment.

Pakistan's economy witnessed positive signs during the first quarter of the ongoing fiscal year 2020-21 (FY20-21) as remittances grew 26.5%, foreign direct investment (FDI) rose 9.1%, tax collection went up 4.5%, and the primary balance has been in a surplus worth Rs258 billion.

According to official sources, the PTI government's "prudent and timely policies" bolstered large-scale manufacturing (LSM), which registered a 4.8% growth, while the cement sector expanded 20% at 100% capacity utilisation.

Centre shuttered PSM to take over its land, accuses Ghani

Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani
Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani on Thursday said that "several elements, including mafias, were eyeing Pakistan Steel Mills' land" and accused the federal government of wanting to "hand over [the property] to one of their ATMs".

The minister, in a press conference, said that the reason behind shuttering down Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) was not fiscal loss, but the value of the land it was built on, adding that "some people wanted to usurp it".

"An incapable, selected cabinet cannot make decisions regarding steel mills and its employees," he declared and added that the Sindh government will stand by the PSM employees who were recently axed. Last week, the federal government had fired 4,544 employees after a decision earlier this year to let go all employees of the company.

The move was condemned by PPP Chief Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who termed the Centre's move "heartless" and vowed that his party would "return each and everyone back to work".

In response to Bilawal's tweet, Minister for Industries and Production Hammad Azhar said that he wanted to "remind everyone that it was during the PPP [government's] tenure that the PSM went from a profit-making entity with billions in [its] bank account to a heavy loss-making and bankrupt entity".

In his talk today, Ghani said the land on which PSM was built belonged to the Sindh government, which can retrieve it any time it wanted to.

The provincial minister critcised the incumbent federal government, saying that over the past two years, the Centre had done nothing to revive the steel mills and had now resorted to firing people.

The PTI government's arguments regarding PSM being in loss were all "drama", Ghani said, adding that the PPP government can "run the steel mills and make it profitable as well".

He rubbished claims by government ministers that the PSM went into loss when the PPP came to power. Ghani said at the time, the world was facing an economic recession which had affected the steel sector as well.

When PML-N came to power, he said, the economic situation had improved and PSM was at breakeven.

"However, it came to a halt when its gas supply was discontinued leading to a loss," Ghani insisted. PSM's gas supply was discontinued in 2015, when the PML-N was in power.

In his press talk today, Ghani vowed to stand by the PSM employees, who he said had the right to protest. The provincial minister recalled that Planning Minister Asad Umar had once said that if PSM employees were wronged, he would stand by them instead of the government.

Ghani also called upon MQM ministers to "speak up in cabinet and resign if their voice is not heard".

Uber in advanced talks to sell air taxi unit

Uber Elevate
Uber Technologies is in advanced talks to sell its air taxi business, “Uber Elevate”, to aerospace firm Joby Aviation, news website Axios reported on Wednesday, citing sources.

Hyundai Motor Co, which in January announced a partnership with Uber Elevate to develop electric air taxis, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

With Uber’s business rattled by the COVID-19 pandemic, the company cut 23% of its workforce in May as part of aggressive cost cuts and vowed to focus on its core ride-hailing and food-delivery businesses.

Uber has been working on various other businesses, including the development of self-driving cars, the Elevate project and a freight logistics network.

The company is also in talks to sell its self-driving business.

US military to keep two larger Afghan bases after drawdown to 2,500

Army General Mark Milley
The Pentagon has approved drawdown plans in Afghanistan that will still keep two larger bases in the country as officials carry out President Donald Trump’s orders to slash troop levels to 2,500 by Jan. 15, the top U.S. general said on Wednesday.

Trump’s post-election decision last month to cut nearly half of the roughly 4,500 troops currently in Afghanistan came before military leaders could devise plans to execute a drawdown, leaving many questions unanswered about the future U.S. military mission after Trump leaves office on Jan. 20.

Army General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, offered the first details about the drawdown at an event hosted by the Brookings Institution think tank. He said that in addition to the two larger bases, the United States would also keep “several satellite bases.”

He said the US military will also continue its two core missions: aiding Afghan security forces who are locked in a grinding conflict with Taliban insurgents and carrying out counterterrorism operations.

However, Milley did not disclose which bases in Afghanistan would be shuttered or say what capabilities would be lost as the United States removes 2,000 troops from the country. He declined to speculate about what President-elect Joe Biden may decide.

“What comes after that, that will be up to a new administration,” Milley said.

As the United States prepares to withdraw more troops, the U.S.-backed Afghan government and Taliban representatives reached a preliminary deal on Wednesday to press on with peace talks.

It was their first written agreement in 19 years of war that Milley said has long been stalemated, with neither side able to defeat the other on the battlefield.

Looking back, Milley said the United States had “achieved a modicum of success” in Afghanistan. He stressed the importance of peace talks, even as he acknowledged that the idea of sitting down with Taliban representatives was “odious” to some people.

“But that is in fact the most common way that insurgencies end, is through a power-sharing negotiated settlement,” he said.

Joe Biden vows no quick rollback of Trump’s China tariffs

Joe Biden
Joe Biden will keep Donald Trump’s trade-war tariffs on China for the time being when he moves into the Oval Office next month, the president-elect has told US media.

Rancor and recrimination have defined the relationship between the world’s two biggest economies over the last four years, with Trump slapping import fees on billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese goods with tariffs.

“I’m not going to make any immediate moves, and the same applies to the tariffs,” Biden told the New York Times in an interview published Wednesday.

“I’m not going to prejudice my options.”

Since winning last month’s presidential election, Biden has hinted at a trade policy that would mend Washington’s alliances with Europe and the Asia-Pacific.

He has said the United States must join forces with other world democracies to present a united front in global trade policy as a counterweight to China.

Biden has targeted Beijing on several fronts and singled out Chinese President Xi Jinping during a debate with other presidential candidates in February.

Players fully abiding by COVID-19 protocols: Babar Azam

Babar Azam
Pakistan captain Babar Azam on Thursday said that the Pakistani team is missing the pre-match training sessions because it is strictly abiding by New Zealand's coronavirus safety protocols.

In a video message shared on Twitter by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Azam said that he is "sure once cricket resumes, [the team] will forget about the restrictions of [the] isolation facility."

He said that New Zealand's COVID-19 safety protocols are very different from that of England, because of which players have to support and talk to boost each other's morale.

"We have been missing our practice sessions. All of us want to start playing cricket as soon as possible, "he said. "We are a big squad of 50 people so it's a tough task to handle it, but the bonding within groups is helping players get through this tough time."

The skipper stressed that it is an honour for the team to represent Pakistan, adding that ups and downs are part of life but they have to be faced and tackled in accordance with the situation.

"We are going through a hard time but as a team, we are supporting each other in the best way possible. Once we resume playing cricket, our entire focus will shift towards the game."

After reaching New Zealand for the matches, six players of the Pakistan team tested positive for the coronavirus while serving their mandatory, 14-day quarantine period.

On Thursday, New Zealand health authorities stated that the two of three cases that returned with positive PCR on day six of testing earlier are now confirmed as “historical cases” and not infectious anymore.

Previously, the New Zealand Cricket Board said that some members of the Pakistani team had "contravened protocols on the first day of managed isolation".

Pakistan will play three T20Is and two Test matches in New Zealand next month. On the sidelines, Pakistan Shaheens will also play two 4-day games against New Zealand A on the tour.

UN General Assembly adopts five anti-Israeli resolutions

UN General Assembly
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has approved five anti-Israeli resolutions, which are part of a package of 20 pro-Palestinian texts that the 193-member body adopts on an annual basis.

One of the documents, passed on Wednesday, condemned Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights — a territory the Tel Aviv regime seized from Syria in the 1967 Six Day War and annexed four years later — in a move that was never recognized by the world community.

Endorsed by 88-9 votes with 62 abstentions, the resolution urges Israel to withdraw from the “occupied Syrian Golan to the line of 4 June 1967 in implementation of the relevant Security Council resolutions.”

It also affirmed that Israel’s unilateral annexation of the Syrian territory in 1981 “constitutes a stumbling block in the way of achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the region.”

Over the past decades, Israel has built dozens of settlements in the Golan Heights in defiance of international calls for the regime to stop its construction activities on the occupied land.

Damascus has repeatedly reaffirmed its sovereignty over the Golan Heights, saying the area must be completely restored to its control.

In a major pro-Israel policy shift, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order in 2019 recognizing Israel’s control over occupied Golan in a blatant violation of international law.

The second resolution, entitled a “Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine,” was approved 145-7, with nine abstentions.

It called on the Tel Aviv regime to withdraw from all territory over the pre-1967 lines in occupied East Jerusalem al-Quds, the West Bank and the Golan Heights.

The document also demanded a halt to Israel’s settlement construction activities, spoke of the illegality of annexation plans, and warned the occupying entity against making changes in East Jerusalem al-Quds.

It further took Israel to task for a wide range of actions against the Palestinian people, including the demolition of their homes in Area C of the West Bank.

The three remaining UNGA resolutions affirmed the work of UN Committees operating on behalf of the Palestinians.

Before the vote, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan chastised the General Assembly for not referencing the regime’s recent normalization deals with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain.

“Can this forum be any more detached from the real world?” he asked, claiming, “Instead of encouraging the Palestinians to see how these agreements can transform the region and be used as a catalyst for peace with Israel, this institution votes in favor of these biased resolutions.”

A Palestinian representative denounced Erdan’s “flip” and “offensive” comments, including one where he accused the UNGA of being detached from reality.

“On the contrary, what was discussed today in this debate is the reality. What was discussed today is not so-called ‘Palestinian talking points.’ These are the international talking points,” she said. “This is the international consensus that Israel, the occupying power, continues to object, obstruct, to deny, to belittle and to attempt futilely to destroy.”

The regime has gotten “accustomed to violating the law with zero consequences,” she added. “Only accountability can change this miserable situation and give hope for a future of justice and peace...The hypocritical and degrading claim by the Israeli representative that this institution’s approach has failed perhaps should highlight even more the need or concrete actions by states to implement the resolutions adopted by the UNGA to ensure accountability.”

She also stressed that the passage of the anti-Israel texts showed that support for the Palestinian people remained strong.

Before the General Assembly’s vote, a Jordanian representative, whose country is the custodian of the holy sites in Jerusalem al-Quds, said Israel must maintain the status quo at Haram al-Sharif or Temple Mount.

Israel is attempting to “impose a fait accompli on al-Aqsa mosque and Jerusalem,” he said, adding that the occupied city’s “holy sites will remain the focus of Jordanian care and guardianship.”

Jordan will “combat a new fait accompli or change the historic or legal status of the holy city especially at the al-Aqsa Mosque,” he emphasized.

Separately, Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour asked the international community to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law and stick to the so-called two-state solution to the Middle East conflict.

He also called for a boycott of Israeli settlement products and urged Western nations to recognize Palestinian statehood.

In another development on Wednesday, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh urged donor countries and international organizations to take serious measures towards boycotting Israeli settlements.

He stressed that the status quo imposed by Israel is deteriorating as the Palestinian land is shrinking, the settlers’ violence is escalating, and access to resources is decreasing daily.

“Economic development is not separate from the political and national project. Rather, it is a lever towards ending the occupation and establishing the Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital,” he said, noting that the world must move to end this occupation because the current status quo cannot continue.

Mohammad Reza Sahraei, counselor at Iran’s Mission to the UN, said the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People provides an opportunity to “highlight the dire and painful situation endured by Palestinians over the course of decades as a result of the gross and systematic violation of their rights by the Israeli regime.”

“The question of Palestine is the longest-running crisis of our time with no foreseeable conclusion in sight…. In fact, the non-compliance of the occupying regime with relevant international laws and regulations has further prevented the international community from achieving a just and lasting solution to the crisis,” he said.

“After more than seven decades, the Israeli regime has continued to violate the fundamental human rights and dignities of the Palestinian people as well as other Arabs living under its occupation. As a result, Palestinians are not only deprived of their lands and properties while being forcibly evicted but also subjected to violence, terror, and intimidation,” the diplomat added.

SHC issues notices on MQM petition against DMC Keamar

SHC issues notices on MQM petition against DMC Keamar
The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued on Thursday notices to the Sindh government and other respondents on a petition filed by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) challenging formation of the DMC Keamari.

A division bench of the SHC, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, directed the official respondents to file their response to the constitutional petition by next hearing on December 23.

Four MQM legislators from Karachi’s District West filed the petition in the high court against formation of DMC Keamari.

“DMC Keamari has been constituted on political grounds and it contravenes sub-clause 3 and 4 of the Sindh Local Government Act (SLGA) clause VIII,” the MQM petition said.

The government notification about the DMC Keamari has been unlawful as an early petition challenging formation of Keamari District was already under the hearing of the high court, it said.

The government issued notification for the Keamari district and distribution of assets despite these facts, the petition further argued. “The People’s Party government’s decision to this effect has been malicious and based on ill-intention,” the petition said.

The petitioners seek suspension of both notifications over the matter.

Local Government Department of Sindh had on October 29 notified formation of District Municipal Corporation in Keamari area which the government had earlier declared Karachi’s seventh district.

The new District Municipal Corporation will be known as DMC Keamari, the government notified.

New Zealand’s Ardern declares climate emergency

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern
New Zealand promised its public sector would become carbon neutral by 2025 as it declared a climate emergency on Wednesday, a symbolic move that critics said needed to be backed with greater actions to reduce emissions.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the climate emergency declaration was based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s findings that to avoid more than 1.5 degree Celsius rise in global warming, emissions would need to fall by around 45% from 2010 levels by 2023 and reach zero by around 2050.

“This declaration is an acknowledgement of the next generation. An acknowledgement of the burden that they will carry if we do not get this right and do not take action now,” Ardern told lawmakers in parliament.

After an hour-long debate, a majority of parliamentarians voted in favour of the declaration. The main opposition National Party voted against it saying it was nothing but “virtue signalling”.

New Zealand joins 32 other countries including Japan, Canada, France and Britain that have declared a climate emergency.

Ardern, who returned to power in October delivering the biggest election victory for her centre-left Labour Party in half a century, has called climate change the “nuclear free moment of our generation”.

In her first term she passed a Zero Carbon Bill, which sets the framework for net zero emissions by 2050 with an exemption for farming, and banned new offshore oil and gas exploration.

Nearly half of New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture, mainly methane.

The government on Wednesday promised the public sector will achieve carbon neutrality by 2025. Government agencies would have to measure and report emissions and offset any they can’t cut by 2025.

The programme will be backed by a NZ$200 million ($141 million) fund to finance replacing coal boilers and help purchase electric or hybrid vehicles, it said.

Greenpeace welcomed the declaration, but challenged the government to follow through with policy and action.

“For Jacinda Ardern’s climate emergency declaration to be more than just words, that means tackling New Zealand’s largest source of climate pollution: agriculture,” said Greenpeace agriculture and climate campaigner Kate Simcock.

Coronavirus: UK govt green lights Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for emergency use

UK govt green lights Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for emergency use
The United Kingdom became the first country in the world on Wednesday to approve the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine with the vaccine expecting to be rolled for use from next week.

According to British newspaper Guardian, the vaccine has been approved for emergency use by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Authority (MHRA).

The publication reported that the first dose of the vaccine may arrive in the United Kingdom in the coming days. It added that the Boris Johnson led government has brought 40 million doses of the vaccine, which has 95% efficacy in its final trials.

“Today’s emergency use authorisation in the UK marks a historic moment in the fight against COVID-19. This authorisation is a goal we have been working toward since we first declared that science will win, and we applaud the MHRA for their ability to conduct a careful assessment and take timely action to help protect the people of the UK,” CEO of Pfizer Albert Bourla was quoted by Guardian.

“As we anticipate further authorisations and approvals, we are focused on moving with the same level of urgency to safely supply a high-quality vaccine around the world. With thousands of people becoming infected, every day matters in the collective race to end this devastating pandemic.”

According to the BBC, Pfizer-BioNTech was among a group of companies that had managed to develop a vaccine from concept to reality. The process to develop it took only 10 months.

The channel reported that the group that is most likely too receive the vaccine first are people at highest risk.

The BBC said that a provisional priority list drawn up by experts had identified care home residents and staff, followed by people over 80 and other health and social care workers as top priority.

The channel reported that the these groups may receive the first stocks of the vaccine before Christmas.

The vaccine has to be administered in two injections, 21 days apart, with the second dose being a booster.

Pfizer coronavirus vaccine over 90% effective, says manufacturer

Last month, large-scale trials of a coronavirus vaccine candidate produced by Pfizer/BioNTech revealed that it is 90% effective, said the manufacturer in a statement.

The study showed that people who received two doses as part of the trial saw 90% fewer symptomatic cases of COVID-19 than participants who were given a placebo.

"Today is a great day for science and humanity. The first set of results from our phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent COVID-19,” said Dr Albert Bourla, the Pfizer chairman and chief executive.

The study focused on 94 participants out of a total number of 43,000 people. These participants were offered the two-dose vaccine and 28 days after they received their first inoculation, remained protected.

"To me, this is the best possible outcome,” Ugur Sahin, co-founder and chief executive of BioNTech told the Financial Times.

Pfizer expects to produce 50 million vaccine doses in 2020 and up to 1.3 billion doses by 2021.

The company referred to the development as a "critical milestone in our vaccine development" adding that the welcome news came at a time when hospitals were being filled to their maximum capacity and economies were struggling to remain open.

Pfizer said that the vaccine's Phase 3 trial began this year on July 27 and has involved 43,538 participants in total out of which 38,955 have received a second dose of the coronavirus vaccine as of November 8, 2020.

Nawaz Sharif declared proclaimed offender by IHC

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was declared a “proclaimed offender” by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday.

The orders were issued by the two-member bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani. The bench was seized with the appeals filed by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif against his sentences in the Al Azizia and Avenfield cases.

During today’s hearing, Foreign Ministry Director Europe Mubashir Khan told the IHC that he had received the court's advertisements regarding Nawaz Sharif and sent it to the Pakistani High Commission in London.

An officer of the Federal Investigation Agency, in his statement to the court, said he delivered the advertisements at Nawaz Sharif’s residences in Jati Umrah and Model Town in Lahore.

Aijaz Ahmed told the bench that he had visited the Model Town residence first where he met the security team. He added that he informed them of the advertisements and also shouted Nawaz’s name loudly.

“The same was done at the Jati Umrah residence,” the FIA official informed the bench. He added that the FIA team has also submitted pictures of the visits.

After listening to their statements, Justice Farooq said that the court will issue orders on the basis of the evidence.

“What should we do now?” he asked NAB’s Additional Prosecutor General Jahanzaib Bharwana.

“Two appeals are from Nawaz Sharif and two NAB appeals are against Nawaz Sharif. A notice has been issued against NAB’s appeal to increase the sentence, but no notice has been issued in the flagship reference,” said Justice Amir Farooq while addressing Bharwana.

Upon hearing Justice Farooq, the NAB lawyer asked the court to dismiss the appeals filed by the former prime minister on “merit”.

He added that Nawaz can be sentenced for not surrendering to the court.

To this, Justice Farooq asked the NAB prosecutor to present judicial precedents at the next hearing on what should be done about the appeal of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

He said Maryam Nawaz and Captain Safdar’s cases are also fixed for hearing in the coming days.

“Should Nawaz Sharif's appeals be fixed for hearing along with those appeals?” asked Justice Farooq.

However, Bharwana contended the “merit” was completely different on the appeals filed by Safdar and Maryam.

Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani intervened, saying the court will also look at the conduct of former judge Arshad Malik.

To this, Bharwana said Nawaz had submitted a petition to present five witnesses. He added that the second petition has been filed by Nasir Butt.

Upon hearing the details of the appeal, the court observed that judge Arshad Malik had also submitted an affidavit in court which is part of the record.

“Tell the court in the next hearing whether the joint petition will be seen first or the appeals,” said Justice Farooq. While Justice Kayani said the court will have to look at the law even if the accused has fled.

The court, after hearing the arguments, decided to declare Nawaz a proclaimed offender and stated that it will issue its written orders shortly.
