Nation celebrates Eid-ul-Fitr with religious zeal, fervor

Eid-ul-Fitr
Eid-ul-Fitr is being celebrated with traditional and religious fervour across Pakistan today.

Eid prayers were offered at mosques and more than 300 Eidgahs in all cities and towns of the country. Special prayers were offered for the well-being of the country while in sermons the Ulema highlighted the significance and philosophy of Eid-ul-Fitr. In a rare occasion, Eid-ul-Fitr is being celebrated on the same day across the country.

Special prayers were also offered for the progress and prosperity of the country and welfare of the Muslim Ummah.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, special care was taken to make sure Eid congregations were held at open places, mosques and Eidgahs in all major cities and towns while following strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) of social distancing and other precautionary measures.

Security has been beefed up in different parts of the country including the federal capital to avoid any untoward incident on the auspicious occasion.

In the federal capital, the main Eid congregation was held at the Faisal Mosque where top government officials and envoys of Muslim countries offered Eid prayers along with others.

Information Minister Senator Shibli Faraz said it was a rare occasion where across the country Eid would be celebrated on the same day.

In a tweet, Faraz Pakistan under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan is progressing towards a united and prosperous country.

He said we must not forget the pain of families who lost their loved ones in yesterday's air crash while celebrating Eid.

President, prime minister extend Eid greetings

President Arif Alvi is his message on the occasion of Eid urged the nation to keep adhering to the precautionary measures as the whole world was being ravaged by the deadly COVID-19.

He said the whole nation with solidarity and precautionary measures would face the critical challenge of coronavirus.

The president added that Eid-ul-Fitr had special significance due to the holy month of Ramadan as the day heralded with the award for performing the religious obligations and strengthening the spirit of patience and sympathy.

“The day teaches us to adopt all those qualities of humanity, sacrifice and patience as a permanent part of our lives which will pave the way for earning the divine blessings,” he added.

The president further said sharing joys of this holy occasion, the day reminded them to also include the needy and deserving people in these pleasures by paying special attention to such segments of the society.

Prime Minister Imran Khan in his message stressed upon the nation to pay special attention to the plight of needy, neglected and down-trodden segments of society while observing the auspicious event of Eid-ul-Fitr by extending all possible support, sympathy and care.

The prime minister also emphasised upon the observance of precautionary measures and government’s devised SOPs concerning the virus as with such approach the people could save lives of their loved ones and the countrymen.

Felicitating the nation and whole Muslim world, he observed that they were fortunate ones for reaping the blessings of the holy month of Ramadan.

Arthur plans SL training camp from June 1

Sri Lanka head coach Mickey Arthur
Sri Lanka head coach Mickey Arthur has said the national side is looking to return to training on June 1, subject to clearance from the country’s government.

Arthur revealed that he, along with Sri Lanka captains Dimuth Karunaratne and Lasith Malinga, discussed plans to return with the board in a meeting held last week.

The fast bowlers will be the first players to return to training once cricket resumes, the former South African, Australia and Pakistan coach said.

Arthur told ESPN Cricinfo: “Last Wednesday we had a quick meeting [to talk about resuming cricket] because we are starting to get out plans in place for June 1.

“Once we get the official go-ahead from the [Sri Lanka] ministry of health I will start putting meat into that structure with the captains and my support staff.

“It is looking good with the health ministry, but it will be a smaller group.

“We’ll probably prioritise our fast bowlers because they are the ones who are going to need more time to get back into it.”

Arthur also did say that they will have to stick to the parameters being finalised by the ICC Cricket Committee (of which he is a member) before players can return to train.

The Sri Lanka mentor continued: “Once we get some assurances from the medical staff around the world that biosecure [environment] is fine and what the virus could do to you potentially if you got it.

“Once the players understand and digest they’ll all be good. And then hopefully after the first 20 days of June we could virtually have our whole squad back training.

“That’s the time for me where, if we could be in this biosecure environment, we could go in may be Hambantota or Pallekelle just for a week and try and rekindle that trust and check where we want to go with our goal setting.”

With remote work plan, Facebook dashes hopes of paycheck arbitrage

With remote work plan, Facebook dashes hopes of paycheck arbitrage
With Facebook’s adoption of permanent remote work on Thursday, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has untethered one of Silicon Valley’s biggest companies from the place that incubated it.

But he also dashed a Silicon Valley dream: that tech workers would be able to take their generous salaries with them as they flee the Bay Area’s crushing housing costs, dirty sidewalks and crowded roadways.

As lockdowns dragged into their third month, message boards popular with well-paid tech workers have lit up with fantasies of working long-term from tropical beaches and spacious houses in affordable small towns in the Midwest.

“Does that mean I could apply for a job in Silicon Valley and work remotely from, say, the Caribbean? Asking for a friend,” wrote one user on Blind, an app designed to let workers swap information anonymously.

Afraid not, Zuckerberg said, addressing employees in a publicly broadcast livestream on his Facebook page.

The company, one of Silicon Valley’s biggest employers, is giving U.S. staffers who are approved to work remotely until Jan. 1, 2021 to update the company on where they plan to base themselves, at which point their salaries will be adjusted to reflect the local cost of living.

Zuckerberg said he expects half of Facebook’s workforce to take him up on the offer over the next five to 10 years.

Employees who attempt to wiggle around those compensation adjustments will be subject to “severe ramifications,” he said, as the company needs to account for employee locations to avoid violating tax laws.

Zuckerberg said Facebook will monitor adherence by checking where employees access its VPN. Facebook also uses its own apps' to track employee locations, according to CNBC here one time using the data to find interns who failed to show up for work.

Even as many tech workers dream of a future in low-tax states, others on message boards fret about how the shift to remote work could exert downward pressure on salaries across the board and warn that being far from headquarters could steepen the climb up the corporate ladder.

One former Facebook employee, who in his 20s lived in Silicon Valley’s suburbs for the short commute, said the change would open up opportunities even for employees who stay in California.

“A 25-year-old maybe would rather be in San Francisco, while someone looking to raise a family might prefer to move outside the city,” he said.

A Facebook spokesman said the company was not planning layoffs, compulsory moves or salary adjustments for employees who opt to stay in the Bay Area.

If the experiment is successful, Facebook’s move could prompt other tech giants to compete for engineering talent by embracing remote work - and other states to compete for Californians.

“The warm, sunny states with affordable housing and zero taxes will see an influx of educated, rich workers. States will need to cut taxes to keep up,” Chamath Palihapitiya, the chief executive of venture capital firm Social Capital and an early executive at Facebook, said on Twitter.

The biggest loser, he predicted, would be California.

Beijing says new HK laws won't harm investors, urges countries to stop 'meddling'

Beijing says new HK laws won't harm investors
China’s foreign ministry branch in Hong Kong dismissed concerns that its proposed national security laws for the city would harm foreign investors, hitting back at “meddling” countries as Beijing’s ties with Washington soured further.

The security legislation, which could see Chinese intelligence agencies set up bases in Hong Kong, has sent chills through the business and diplomatic communities, spooked financial markets and escalated geopolitical tensions.

U.S. government officials have said the legislation would end the Chinese-ruled city’s autonomy and would be bad for both Hong Kong’s and China’s economies. They said it could jeopardize the territory’s special status in U.S. law, which has helped it maintain its position as a global financial center.

Hong Kong is caught in the cross-hairs of a Beijing-Washington conflict developing on many fronts. After trade disputes and reciprocal accusations over the source and handling of the coronavirus pandemic, Washington on Friday accused the Chinese government of making it impossible for U.S. airlines to resume service to China.

Britain, Australia and Canada expressed “deep concern” in a joint statement about the proposed security laws which they said would undermine the “one country, two systems” principle agreed when Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

Bankers and headhunters said it could lead to money and talent leaving the city. Hong Kong stocks slumped 5.6% on Friday, and sent chills through global markets.

A spokesperson of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in Hong Kong said in a statement the city’s high degree of autonomy “will remain unchanged, and the interests of foreign investors in the city will continue to be protected under the law”.

Beijing’s move comes after pro-democracy protests in 2019 plunged Hong Kong into its biggest political crisis since the handover. Communist authorities see the protests as a security threat and blame the West for fomenting unrest.

The commissioner’s office described statements by “meddling countries” as “double standard and gangster logic”.

“No matter how venomously you smear, provoke, coerce or blackmail us, the Chinese people will remain rock-firm in safeguarding national sovereignty and security,” it said.

“Doomed is your plot to undermine China’s sovereignty and security by exploiting the troublemakers in Hong Kong as pawns and the city as a frontier for secession, subversion, infiltration and sabotage activities against China.”

Chris Patten, the last governor of the former British colony, said China has betrayed the people of Hong Kong.

As Hong Kong braced for its first major protests since the proposal of the legislation on Sunday in the center of the city, police said in a statement they “will deploy adequate manpower in relevant locations.”

Despite reassurances from Beijing and Hong Kong authorities, many Hong Kongers fret over losing rights.

Lok, 42, a clerk at an investment company, said she felt there was no prospect for her children, aged 16 and 9, and she hopes they will move away: “I think Hong Kong is half-way dead. I didn’t expect Hong Kong would deteriorate that quickly.”

Hong Kong publishing tycoon Jimmy Lai, an outspoken critic of Beijing who faces charges of illegal assembly, said on Twitter the legislation would bring the end of “China’s last miracle” and the communist party was slaughtering “the proverbial golden goose.”

Over the past 24 hours, Hong Kong’s pro-Beijing politicians have also responded to concerns that the national security legislation could reduce freedoms.

Upon her return from Beijing late on Friday, Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said the stock market “goes up and comes down” and blamed protests for destabilizing the business environment.

Henry Tang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, said the legislation was “beneficial” for business, bringing stability.

In an interview with Reuters, Lam’s predecessor as Hong Kong chief executive, Leung Chun-Ying, said the legislation was needed to “stamp out terrorism”. He noted that the British had maintained a police special branch, dismantled before the territory was handed over to Chinese rule in 1997.

“Singapore has a Special Branch. We don’t. America has all kinds of law enforcement agencies that are tasked to deal with national security threats. We don’t. So it’s not surprising that as part of the efforts to fill the national security legal gap, we need to have a body,” Leung said.

Lori Loughlin, husband plead guilty in U.S. college admissions scandal

Lori Loughlin, husband plead guilty in U.S. college admissions scandal
“Full House” actress Lori Loughlin and her husband on Friday pleaded guilty to participating in a vast U.S. college admissions fraud scheme to secure spots for their daughters at the University of Southern California.

Loughlin and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, appeared before a federal judge in Boston through a Zoom videoconference to plead guilty under agreements calling for them to serve two months and five months in prison, respectively.

They pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud. But U.S. District Judge Nathaniel Gorton said he would weigh whether to accept their plea deals, which restrict his ability to impose different sentences.

Loughlin and Giannulli have also agreed to be sentenced to respective fines of $150,000 and $250,000 and 100 and 250 hours of community service.

Gorton scheduled their sentencings for Aug. 21, though defense attorney William Trach requested an earlier date so the Los Angeles couple could have “finality.”

They are among 54 people charged over a scheme where wealthy parents conspired with a California college admissions consultant to use bribery and fraud to secure their children’s admission to top schools.

Consultant William “Rick” Singer has pleaded guilty to facilitating cheating on college entrance exams and using bribery to secure the admission of parents’ children to schools as fake athletic recruits.

The parents include actress Felicity Huffman, who received a 14-day prison sentence.

Also on Friday, Peter Dameris, staffing company ASGN Inc’s former chief, agreed to plead guilty. “He is deeply apologetic,” said his lawyer, Richard Crane.

Prosecutors allege Loughlin and Giannulli conspired with Singer to fabricate parts of their daughters’ applications so they could be admitted as fake rowing team recruits.

Prosecutors said Giannulli also paid $500,000 to induce a university employee to facilitate the recruitment of daughters Olivia Jade and Isabella Rose Giannulli.

Coronavirus vaccine safe in early trial, hydroxychloroquine may increase death risk

Coronavirus vaccine safe in early trial, hydroxychloroquine may increase death risk
The following is a brief roundup of some of the latest scientific studies on the novel coronavirus and efforts to find treatments and vaccines for COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus.

A coronavirus vaccine developed by CanSino Biologics Inc appears to be safe and induced a rapid immune response in its first human trial, Chinese researchers reported on Friday in The Lancet medical journal. First-in-human studies, known as Phase I trials, are primarily designed to test safety. This vaccine did not cause any serious adverse effects, the researchers say, though they did report some side effects such as fever. Furthermore, blood samples from the 108 vaccinated adults showed so-called neutralizing antibodies and T-cell responses against the novel coronavirus, a sign of possible efficacy. "These results represent an important milestone," coauthor Professor Wei Chen from the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology said in a statement. "The ability to trigger these immune responses does not necessarily indicate that the vaccine will protect humans from COVID-19. We are still a long way from this vaccine being available to all," the researcher added. Further studies will be needed to confirm whether the vaccine protects against infection. The first such trial is underway in Wuhan, China. (; reut.rs/36lvRD0; bit.ly/3cX8h1X)

In an observational study of more than 96,000 COVID-19 patients at 671 hospitals on six continents, the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine was tied to an increased risk of death, researchers reported on Friday. It was not clear whether taking the drug provided patients with any benefit, according to their paper in The Lancet. Overall, 14,888 patients received hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, with or without an antibiotic, and 81,144 did not receive those drugs. Randomized placebo-controlled studies are needed to clarify the risks and benefits of the decades-old drug in the treatment of COVID-19, the researchers said. Many such trials are underway. The University of Minnesota may have some results next week, from two studies testing whether hydroxychloroquine is useful for preventing infection in people exposed to the virus and whether it alleviates COVID-19 symptoms. Other placebo-controlled trial results are expected starting later this summer. (; reut.rs/2WXnbQp; bit.ly/2ynpT86)

A study published on Thursday in The New England Journal of Medicine helps explain why blood clots develop more often in COVID-19 patients. It appears that the virus can severely damage patients' blood vessels, causing the blood to clot as it flows past. In studies of lungs from seven patients who died of COVID-19, researchers found damage to tiny air sacs in the lung called alveoli. They also found severe injury to blood vessel linings, which was associated with virus in the cells of blood vessels and disrupted cell membranes. Compared with lungs of patients who died of influenza, the COVID-19 lungs had far more extensive injuries. In addition, the healing reaction - a process of new vessel growth called intussusceptive angiogenesis - was 30 times higher than normal in the COVID-19 lungs, study coauthor Dr. William Li, medical director of the Angiogenesis Foundation, said in a statement. All of these factors contribute to blood clots, his team reports. "One of the great mysteries of COVID-19 has been why blood clots, or thromboses, form in some patients," Li said. "These clots can become lethal because they severely compromise blood flow not only in the lungs, but also in other organs such as the brain and heart, among other tissues. Our research is the first to show that these clots are associated with damaged blood vessels." (bit.ly/36pzsAg)

Simulated sunlight rapidly inactivates the novel coronavirus on non-porous surfaces like stainless steel, according to researchers from the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate's National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC). "These results suggest that natural sunlight may be effective for significantly reducing the amount of virus on exposed surfaces, such as mailboxes, playground equipment, and shopping carts left outdoors in the sunlight," a spokesman for the researchers told Reuters. While significant reductions of the virus were observed after just a few minutes of simulated sunlight, the risk of exposure from contact with surfaces may not be fully eliminated, the researchers cautioned in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. More research is needed on how much virus is shed onto surfaces from infected individuals, how easily the virus is transferred from surfaces, and what amount is needed to cause infection. (bit.ly/3e4cxNg)

In the desperate early days of the coronavirus pandemic, reports from China that few critically ill COVID-19 patients could be revived after a cardiac arrest led doctors in some countries to consider issuing blanket "Do Not Resuscitate" orders. But for U.S. COVID-19 patients, at least, that would not be appropriate, researchers said. Adequate data is not yet available on U.S. survival rates for in-hospital resuscitation of COVID-19 patients and the Chinese data may not be applicable, researchers wrote in a paper published on Friday in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, an American Heart Association journal. "Early experience of the pandemic in the U.S. reveals that about a quarter of COVID-19 patients are younger than 50 years of age and otherwise healthy. Cardiac arrest in such patients will likely have a different prognosis" than it would in older patients, researchers said. The study authors are members of the American Heart Association "Get With The Guidelines" Resuscitation Investigators panel. (bit.ly/3gaxBDI)

Punjab Forensic Science Agency teams arrive in Karachi

Punjab Forensic Science Agency teams arrive in Karachi
Forensic teams from the Punjab Forensic Science Agency arrived in Karachi on Saturday to collect DNA samples from the victims of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight PK-8303, which had crashed a day earlier.

A total of ninety-seven people lost their lives in the tragic accident. The plane had been seconds away from an emergency landing at the Karachi Airport on Friday afternoon when it crashed in Model Colony, a residential area near the airport.

Only two survived the crash — the chief executive of the Bank of Punjab and a young engineer. No casualties were reported on the ground.

Head of the Punjab Forensic Science Agency Dr Tahir Ashraf told three teams comprising forensic scientists were in Karachi to collect DNA samples from the plane crash victims.

“The teams will start collecting samples from today,” Dr Ashraf said.

He added, the teams will collect samples from the bodies and the victims' parents, siblings or children to identify the victims.

"As soon as the samples reach Lahore, we will work day and night to get the result out as soon as possible. The result of the DNA tes will be available in 24 hours,” he said.

Earlier on Saturday, the Sindh Health Department confirmed that 66 bodies had been shifted to Jinnah Hospital, of which 20 bodies were of women and 43 of men. Three bodies of children had also been brought to the hospital.

The provincial health department said 50 bodies at the hospital were yet to be identified, while 16 bodies had been identified.

The health department further said that the remaining 31 bodies had been moved to Civil Hospital, of which six bodies were of women and 25 of men. It said 28 of bodies kept at the hospital have yet to be identified while the process of identification had been completed for three.

Separately, rescue officials said some bodies had later been shifted from the Civil and Jinnah Hospitals to an Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth and the Chhipa morgue at FTC.

“DNA samples were taken from the bodies before being shifted to the morgues,” officials said, adding that 96 bodies were at the morgues, while one had been handed over to the deceased's relatives.

Shawwal moon can be sighted today: Fawad Ch

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry
Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has said the Shawwal moon can be sighted today, and the country may celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Sunday.

“The Shawwal moon was born on May 22 at 10:30pm and will be visible between 7.36pm and 8.15pm tonight in Badin, Thatta and Pasni,” Chaudhry said while addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Saturday.

He added that, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology, Eid-ul-Fitr should be celebrated in the country tomorrow.

However, fellow cabinet member and Minister for Religious Affairs Pir Noorul Haq Qadri quickly stepped in to prevent a dispute between the outspoken science minister and the religious body tasked with sighting the moon.

Qadri said the final decision on when to celebrate Eid still lies with the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

"The nation will celebrate Eid according to the decision of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee," Qadri said.

"Our beliefs and religious laws call for a visual sighting of the moon," the minister said. "There is no bar on technology being used for that process," he said.

"A nominee of the Ministry of Science and Technology has already been included in the committee. A decision will be taken by the ulema only," he said.

Qadri said Fawad Chaudhry was a good friend, but seemed to be interfering needlessly in the matter.

'Time for nation to celebrate together'

“Ever since the creation of Pakistan, there have been conflicts when it comes to religious events. When the Reut-e-Hilal Committee was established in 1974, these issues were resolved,” Chaudhry said at his press conference.

However, he added, the committee had always been in the middle of controversy.

“There are always different announcements by the Reut-e-Hilal Committee and Qasim Khan Mosque [in Peshawar, headed by Mufti Popalzai],” he said.

The federal minister rejected the notion that there was no relation between the sighting of the moon according to Islamic practices and the use of technology in doing so.

“Nowhere in the world is moon sighting an issue. With advances in technology it has become easier to sight the moon,” Chaudhry said.

Taking a jibe at the Reut-e-Hilal Committee, the federal minister said, “We are told sighting the moon with spectacles is halal, while sighting it through a telescope is haram. Aren't spectacles also a form of technology?”

He added that instead of being divided, the country should come together for religious events.

Earlier this week, Chaudhry had stated that Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on May 24 (Sunday) in many countries, including Pakistan.

Speaking during a TV programme, Chaudhry said that according to the calendar prepared by the science ministry, this year Eid will be celebrated across the country on May 24.

The minister had said the interesting thing is that the festival will be celebrated on the same day in almost all parts of the world along with Pakistan, including Indonesia, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

Pakistan, like all Muslim countries, is gearing up to mark Eid-ul-Fitr amid the coronavirus pandemic, which has taken more than 1,000 lives in the country.

The country started observing Eid holidays from May 22 and will continue to do so till May 27, a notification from the interior ministry said.

Timeline of major Plane Crashes in Pakistan

Timeline of major aviation accidents in Pakistan
While the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been meeting fatal accidents since its inception, like any other airliner around the world, a good number of private carriers in the country have also been involved in such disasters.

The earliest aviation accident in Pakistan:

On February 25, 1956, a Gilgit-Rawalpindi freight plane has crashed near the village of Jalkot in Lastgarush Galli due to rain, sleet and thunderstorm, killing all three people onboard.

The wreckage of this aircraft was found on March 11, 1956. The probable cause officially listed was pilot error, while he was attempting a flight beyond his ability or experience. Here follows the timeline and chronology of some other major air tragedies in Pakistan during the last six decades:

On July 1, 1957, some 24 people had lost lives after a Chittagong to Dhaka flight had crashed into the tides of the Bay of Bengal. The wreckage was found on July 4, 1957, on the coast of Charlakhi Island, which is about 50 miles west of Chittagong.

Probable cause: “The aircraft crashed after penetrating a thunderstorm and breaking up due to excessive forces placed upon the airframe.”

On May 15, 1958, a PIA aircraft had descended and struck ground after takeoff at night from Delhi Airport. The aircraft, flying for Karachi, had crashed an airport boundary fence, killing 21 of the 38 people on board.

Probable cause: “The captain did not properly observe and interpret his flight instruments and thus inadvertently permitted the aircraft to descend to the ground immediately after a night take off during which no visual reference was possible. A contributory factor may have been the slow reactions of captain due to his state of health.”

On March 26, 1965, another PIA Peshawar-Chitral flight had crashed at Lowari Pass near Dir valley, killing 22 of the 26 people on board.

On May 20, 1965, a Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 707 had crashed on its inaugural flight while attempting to land at Cairo airport, killing 119 people.

Probable cause: “The aircraft did not maintain adequate height for the circuit and continued to descend until it contacted the ground. The reason for that abnormal continuation of descent is unknown”.

On February 2, 1966, a PIA helicopter had crashed near Faridpur after striking a vulture in cruise flight, killing 23 of the 24 humans onboard.

On August 6, 1970, a Rawalpindi to Lahore flight had nosedived Rawat, killing 30 people on board.

On December 8, 1972, flying from Gilgit to Rawalpindi, a PIA Fokker F27 had nose-dived into a snow-capped mountain village called Maidan near Jallkot, killing at least 31 people.

On November 26, 1979, a PIA Boeing 707 bringing home Pakistani Hajj pilgrims from Saudi Arabia had crashed shortly after take-off from Jeddah airport, killing 156 people.

On October 23, 1986, a PIA Fokker F27 had met an accident, while it was coming in to land in Peshawar, killing 13 of the 54 people on board.

On August 17, 1988, a US-made Hercules C-130 military aircraft had crashed near Bahawalpur, after it had caught fire, killing the then military ruler General Ziaul Haq and 30 others including Pakistani generals and the US ambassador.

On August 25, 1989, a PIA Fokker carrying 54 people had disappeared after leaving Gilgit in northern Pakistan. The wreckage has never been found. This was one of the most terrible plane accidents of Pakistan’s Aviation history.

On September 28, 1992, a PIA Airbus A300 had hit a cloud-covered hillside on approach to the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, after the plane had reportedly descended too early, killing 167 people.

On February 19, 2003, an Air Force Fokker F27 had crashed in the fog-shrouded mountains near Kohat, killing Pakistan Air Force Chief Mushaf Ali Meer, his wife and 15 others.

On February 24, 2003, a chartered Cessna 402-B carrying Afghan Mines and Industries Minister Juma Mohammad Mohammadi, four Afghan officials, a Chinese mining executive and two Pakistani crew members had plunged into the Arabian Sea near Karachi.

On July 10, 2006, a Multan to Lahore Fokker flight could not reach its destination as it had crashed into a wheat field after burning into flames just about 10 minutes after the takeoff. Resultantly, all the 41 passengers and crew members were killed. Amongst the ill-fated passengers were the Vice-Chancellor of Bahauddin Zakariya University, Prof Dr Naseer Khan, and an internationally known Pakistani neurosurgeon, Prof Iftikhar Ali Raja.

On July 28, 2010, an Airblue Airlines aircraft (flying from Karachi) had smashed into the Margalla Hills outside Islamabad while it was preparing to land. All 152 people onboard had lost lives.

On November 5, 2010, a twin-engine plane, operated by Pakistani charter JS Air, had crashed shortly after take-off in Karachi, killing all 21 people on board. The plane was carrying staff of an Italian company to the Bhit gas field in Jamshoro district, where they were going on an exploration mission.

On November 28, 2010, at least 12 people were killed when a Russian-made cargo plane operated by a Georgian airline Sunway had crashed seconds after taking off from Karachi.

On April 20, 2012, a Bhoja Airlines plane, flying from Karachi to Islamabad, had confronted a tragedy after it was trapped in bad weather near the Pakistani capital. Officials said over 125 people had resultantly perished. This was the second-deadliest aviation accident in Pakistan after the July 2010 crash that had killed all 152 onboard, and was the fourth deadliest accident involving the Boeing 737-200 series.

On June 24, 2014, a female passenger had received a fatal bullet injury after a PIA Flight PK-756 was fired at during landing approach to Peshawar Airport. Meanwhile, two male flight attendants had received non-fatal bullet injuries. However, the aircraft had landed safely at Peshawar Airport. It was soon repaired and returned to service.

On December 7, 2016, a PIA ATR-42 aircraft crashes enroute from Chitral to Islamabad. The crash claims lives of all 48 passengers and crew, including singer-cum-evangelist Junaid Jamshed.

On May 22, 2020, a PIA A-320 commercial airliner crashed near the Karachi airport. Over 100 people were onboard the plane. Their fate is not yet known.

PM Imran orders urgent probe into PIA plane crash

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday ordered immediate inquiry into the unfortunate crash of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) passenger plane A320 resulting in several casualties.

“Shocked and saddened by the PIA crash. Immediate inquiry will be instituted,” the premier wrote on Twitter after the national flag career flight flight PK-8303 crashed in a residential area near Karachi's Jinnah International Airport a few moments before landing.

Ninety-nine were aboard the plane, including 85 passengers.

The prime minister further said that he was in touch with PIA’s CEO Arshad Malik and with the rescue and relief teams working on ground.

Expressing immense grief over the loss of precious lives, the premier extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

"Prayers and condolences go to families of the deceased," read the tweet.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan Air Line Pilots' Association (PALPA) said that nothing can be confirmed regarding the plane crash until the black box of the aircraft A320 is decoded.

The PALPA spokesperson Tariq Yahya said that the aircraft was short on power by the end of its journey and was gliding on low altitude.

"When the plane engine fails, the only option is forced landing for which altitude is very important. Unfortunately, the PIA air craft didnot have the required altitude and it crashed on the residential area," Yahya maintained.

Speaking about the safety protocols before the plane embarks its journey, the PALPA official said that the pilot is handed a technical log book filled by the technicians which a pilot goes through before taking off the plane.

Lamenting on the inadequate safety measures for aviation in Pakistan, Yahya said that PALPA had been urging authorities not to compromise on safety guidelines.

"Constructing high story buildings is the violation of civil aviation rules," he noted.

PIA plane crash: aircraft was 'technically sound', aviation ministry to oversee inquiry: CEO

 PIA CEO Arshad Malik
A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane that crashed earlier today was "technically sound", the national carrier's chief executive said Friday in a press conference here in the city.

PIA CEO Arshad Malik said the Aviation Ministry would oversee an inquiry into the incident and that his team stood with the government of Pakistan, the armed forces, and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

"We will need 2-3 days to complete the operation," Malik said. "The airplane was technically sound.

"The aviation ministry will oversee an inquiry into the incident. We want the inquiry report to be completed as soon as possible but we cannot say when. We do not wish to interfere with the inquiry in any way."

The PIA boss confirmed that 99 people, including passengers and air crew, were aboard the flight and that as of now, "we have reports of 19 dead in Civil Hospital and 22 in other hospitals".

He said the pilot established a final landing approach and the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) control room gave him a green signal to go ahead.

"The pilot then did a go-around. He said he is preparing for a second approach.

"Now what was the reason for the go-around? Please do not have any suspicions or doubts," Malik said, adding that facts could be ascertained through flight recorder and the black box. "Nothing can be said till the black box is retrieved."

The PIA top official added that after the go-around, the pilot gave a call stating he "will establish for second approach".

"Something happened there and there can only be ambiguities until we receive the voice and data recorders. I say this with responsibility that when it is received, we'll know whether there was a technical fault, some other issue, some outside activity, bird hit, etc.

"When the plane lowered down, the ATC asked the pilot if there was an issue and the pilot responds, 'Yes, I am facing a problem,' after which the communication gets cut off.

The PIA CEO also spoke about the victims and the response to the tragedy. "We need to handle the situation. We will handle this crisis," he said. "That's why I'm here and the aviation minister will come tomorrow.

"The families of the victims are welcome to come and stay at the airport hotels, which have been vacated. All affected persons are going to be accommodated in airport hotels and other government facilities in Qasr-e-Naz," Malik noted.

"The plane crash-landed in a street; there was damage to the nearby houses but thankfully no building collapsed," he added.

He said the Safety Investigation Board "is a government body that will oversee the investigation" and that it is "independent of PIA and will operate under its own SOPs".

Malik also explained that the monitoring of the aircraft's technical soundness was done by the industry, which has a database through which "they keep a close eye on the aircraft's health".

"I do not wish to give any further information [on the survivors] and I do not want to give anyone false hopes. Our emergency response centre is working round-the-clock to ascertain the facts," he said.

"I will provide more information as soon as we have it."

Bank of Punjab CEO Zafar Masud
Bank of Punjab Chief Executive Officer Zafar Masud and another passenger miraculously survived with relatively minor injuries, after a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane crashed on Friday in a residential area near the metropolis' Jinnah International Airport.

Masud was among the 98 persons travelling in Karachi-bound PIA flight PK-8303 from Lahore, which crashed in the Jinnah Garden area near Model Colony in Malir almost a minute before landing.

It is still too early to say if there are more survivors from the tragedy, by the update has offered a glimmer of hope to rescue teams racing to save as many souls as they can.

The BOP president was shifted to the Darul Sehat Hospital after being recovered from the crash site and is reportedly out of danger. He spoke to his mother on the phone and informed her about his health.

Masud has sustained fractures to his hip and collar bones, the Darul Sehat Hospital's administration said, adding that there were no burn marks on his body, only scratches.

According to the hospital administration, Masud’s CT scan has been done and his condition is out of danger.

Masud's brother is with him in the hospital.

Sindh government Spokesperson Barrister Murtaza Wahab later confirmed that there are two people who miraculously survived the crash.

Senator Saeed Ghani also visited the other survivor identified as Mohammad Zubair.

The survivor of the plane crash also gave a statement in which he said that the plane started jolting before landing.

“The next moment there was a hard crash and I lost consciousness,” said Zubair, adding that when he woke up there was ‘smoke everywhere’.

The hospital administration said that Zubair faced minor injuries and is currently undertreatment at the burns ward.

Everyone must assist in holy struggle to liberate Palestine: Ayatollah Khamenei

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the struggle to liberate Palestine is an obligation and an Islamic goal, adding “everyone must assist the Palestinian nation in this holy struggle”.

"The struggle to liberate Palestine is Jihad in the way of God, and it is an obligation and an Islamic goal. Victory in this struggle has been guaranteed," the Leader said Friday.

His remarks came as millions took part in worldwide events to mark the International Quds Day, on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and condemn Israeli atrocities.

Ayatollah Khamenei said, "The Zionist regime is a deadly, cancerous growth and a detriment to this region" which "will undoubtedly be uprooted and destroyed".

"And then, the shame will fall on those who put their facilities at the service of the this policy of the arrogant powers," the Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei rebuked “certain Arab governments in the region, which act as the minions” of the United States by preparing the ground for normalization with Israel through establishing economic ties.

“These efforts are completely vain and futile,” the Leader said.

The following is the full text of the Leader's speech on the occasion of Quds Day.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and His peace and greetings be upon Muhammad, upon his pure Household, upon his chosen companions and upon those who follow them until the Day of Judgment.

I extend my greetings to all the Muslim brothers and sisters throughout the world and I congratulate them in advance on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr. I also pray to God to accept their worship and servitude in this Holy Month of Ramadan, and I thank the Benevolent Creator for the blessing of being present in this month of this divine banquet.

Today is Quds Day, a day created - thanks to Imam Khomeini's (r.a.) intelligent initiative - to unite Muslims on the issue of Holy Quds and in support of the oppressed people of Palestine. It has played an important role in this regard for several decades now, and God willing, it will continue to do so in the future as well. Nations welcomed Quds Day and considered it to be a religious obligation to hold up the flag for Palestine’s liberation. The main policy of the Arrogant Powers and Zionism is to push aside the issue of Palestine in the minds of Muslim communities and to cause it to fade into oblivion.

Magnitude of Tragedy and Most urgent responsibility

The most urgent responsibility in this regard is fighting this treachery, which is conducted by the enemy’s political and cultural mercenaries in Islamic countries. The truth is that an issue as important as Palestine is not something that the pride, self-esteem and increasing intelligence of Muslim nations will allow to sink into oblivion, even if the Americans, other domineering powers and their regional minions use all their money and power to achieve this goal.

First, I would like to highlight the magnitude of the tragedy of the occupation of Palestine and the formation of the Zionist cancerous tumor in that country. Among crimes against humanity in recent times, there is no crime that equals this crime in terms of scope and gravity. Occupying a country, permanently driving its people out from their homes and their fatherland, and continuing this historical oppression for decades using the most horrifying forms of murder, crime, destruction of farmlands, and genocide – this is indeed a new record in brutality and wickedness.

The main agents and criminals behind this tragedy are the western governments and their satanic policies. The day when the triumphant governments who had won the war in the First World War were carving up West Asia – namely, the Asian territories of the Ottoman Empire – among themselves at the Paris Conference as spoils of war, they felt the need for a safe stronghold in the heart of this region more than ever in order to guarantee their permanent hegemony. Years earlier, through the Balfour Declaration and with the help of the thinking of the rich Jewish sympathizers, the British had prepared the ground for the innovation of Zionism to carry out its role. And now the practical steps groundwork was in place. During those early years, they gradually prepared the preliminaries, and finally after the Second World War they used the opportunity created by the negligence and problems of the regional countries, and dealt their blow. They announced the creation of the bogus regime, the nationless Zionist state.

The primary target of this blow was the Palestinian nation and the secondarily all the other nations in the region. A look at the events that followed in the region shows that the main, short-term goal that westerners and Jewish company -owners pursued by creating the Zionist regime was to build a stronghold for their permanent presence and influence in West Asia and also to gain easy access to the opportunity to interfere, coerce and dominate over the regional countries and governments. Therefore, they equipped the bogus and occupying regime with various kinds of military and non-military tools of power, even with atomic weapons, and their plans included the growth of this cancerous tumor from the Nile to the Euphrates.

Submission of Arab governments

Sadly, after their initial struggles of resistance, some of which were praiseworthy, the majority of Arab governments gradually succumbed. Particularly after the United States took charge of this matter, they forgot their human, Islamic and political responsibilities and their Arab pride and with delusional hopes they contributed to the enemy’s goals. The Camp David Accord is a clear example of this bitter historical fact.

After brave sacrifices and struggles in the early years, resistance groups were gradually pulled to the path of unsuccessful negotiations with the occupier and its supporters. They abandoned the route that could have led to the realization of the Palestinian dream. Negotiations with the United States and other western governments, and also negotiations with useless international groups were bitter, and unsuccessful experiences for Palestine. Holding out an olive branch at the United Nations General Assembly had no result other than the injurious Oslo Accords, and it led to the eye-opening fate of Yasser Arafat.

Dawn of Islamic Revolution in Iran

The dawn of the Islamic Revolution in Iran opened up a new chapter in the struggle for Palestine. From the first steps – namely, driving out the Zionist elements who considered Iran of the Pahlavi period to be one of their safe strongholds – to delegating the unofficial embassy of the Zionist regime to the Palestinian representative office, stopping the flow of oil, other great achievements and widespread political activities. All of these measures brought about the emergence of a front of resistance in the entire region. The hope of solving this issue flourished in hearts. The emergence of the resistance front presented the Zionist regime with increasing problems. God willing, the Zionist regime will encounter even more problems in the future.

However, the efforts of the supporters of that regime – with the US in the front – increased sharply in order to defend the Zionists. The emergence of the faithful, young, self-sacrificing force of Hezbollah in Lebanon and the formation of highly-motivated groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad within the Palestinian borders unsettled and alarmed not only the Zionist ringleaders but also the U.S. and other aggressive western powers. After and in addition to their support of the occupying regime with weapons and publicity, they added recruiting from within the region and from within Arab society to the top of their agenda. Today the result of their voluminous work is obvious and in plain view, revealing itself in the actions and words of certain leaders of Arab governments and certain treacherous political and cultural Arab activists.

Today, both fronts engage in various activities in the arena of struggle. The difference between them is that the resistance front is moving with increasing power and hope, and it marches on towards attracting increasing elements of power, while the opposing front of oppression, unbelief and arrogance is growing more hollow, hopeless and powerless by the day. A clear manifestation of this assertion is the fact that the Zionist army—which was once considered to be invincible and lightning fast, one that would stop the aggression of two great armies in a matter of days— is currently forced to retreat and accept defeat against popular forces in Lebanon and Gaza.

Nevertheless, the arena of struggle is volatile and full of dangers. It requires constant vigilance, and the objective of this struggle is very important, fateful and vital. Any kind of negligence, inattention or mistakes in fundamental calculations will inflict heavy damage.

Therefore, I would like to offer some advice to all those who have strong feelings for the issue of Palestine:

Jihad in the way of God

1- The struggle to liberate Palestine is Jihad in the way of God, and it is an obligation and an Islamic goal. Victory in such a struggle has been guaranteed, because the person who is fighting, even if he is killed, he will receive “one of the two excellent things.” [The Holy Quran 9, Sura at-Tawbah: 52]. Apart from this, the issue of Palestine is a human issue. Driving out millions of human beings from their homes, farmlands and places of business, and doing so through murder and crimes, troubles everyone’s conscience and it inspires opposition in everyone who enjoys courage and determination. Therefore, restricting this to merely a Palestinian issue, or at best, an Arab issue, is a grave mistake. Those who consider the concessions made by a few Palestinian elements or rulers of a few Arab countries as a license to sidestep this Islamic and human issue, are making a grave mistake in understanding the matter, and perhaps they are guilty of betrayal for distorting the truth.

2- The aim of this struggle is the liberation of all the Palestinian lands – from the river to the sea – and the return of all Palestinians to their homeland. Reducing this struggle to the formation of a government in a corner of the Palestinian lands – particularly, in the humiliating way that is mentioned in the discourse of shameless Zionists – is neither a sign of righteous struggle nor a sign of realism. The truth is that today millions of Palestinians have achieved a level of thinking, experience and self-esteem such that they can focus their efforts on this great struggle in the way of God and be certain of divine assistance and the ultimate victory. “And surely God will support those who support His cause; most surely, God is Strong and Mighty.” [22 The Holy Quran, Sura al-Hajj: 40]. Undoubtedly, many Muslims throughout the world will support them and share in their struggle, God willing.

No trust in western governments

3- Although using any halal and religiously permissible means, including global support, is allowed in this struggle - it is absolutely essential to avoid trusting western governments and international groups that are covertly or overtly dependent on them. They are opposed to any effective entity of an Islamic nature. They have no regard for human rights. They themselves are the cause of the worst harm and crimes against the Islamic nation. Which international entity and which criminal power is currently being held accountable for the assassinations, the mass murders, the war mongering, the bombings and the human-made famines in many Islamic and Arab countries?

Today, the world is counting one by one every victim of the coronavirus across the globe, but nobody has asked who is responsible for the hundreds of thousands of martyrdoms, imprisonments and disappearances in countries where the US and Europe have waged wars. Who is responsible for all the unlawful bloodshed in Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya, Iraq, Syria and other countries? Who is responsible for all these crimes and for the occupation, destruction and oppression in Palestine? Why didn’t anyone count the millions of oppressed children, women and men in the world of Islam? Why doesn’t anyone extend their condolences for the mass murder of Muslims? Why should millions of Palestinians spend 70 years away from their homes and in exile? And why should Holy Quds, the first Qiblah of Muslims, be desecrated? The so-called United Nations is not fulfilling its function and the so-called human rights organizations are dead. The slogan of defending the rights of women and children excludes Yemeni and Palestinian women and children.

This is the current conditions of the oppressive western powers and dependent global organizations. The disgrace of certain regional governments that follow them is beyond words.

Therefore, a proud and pious Muslim society must rely on itself and its internal forces. It must raise its powerful hand and remove the obstacles by relying on and trusting in Allah.

US, Zionists have targeted front of resistance

4- The important point that must not be ignored by the political and military elites of the Islamic world is that the policy of the US and the Zionists is to transfer conflicts to behind the frontlines of the front of resistance. Staging civil wars in Syria, the military siege and constant killings in Yemen, the assassinations, the destruction, the creation of ISIS in Iraq and other similar things in some other countries in the region are all machinations to divert the attention of the resistance front and to provide opportunities for the Zionist regime. Some Muslim politicians knowingly, and some others unknowingly, have contributed to these machinations of the enemy. The main way to prevent these machinations majority is for the proud youth throughout the world of Islam to seriously make this demand. Young people in all Islamic countries, particularly in Arab countries, must pay attention to this advice from Imam Khomeini (r.a.): “Vent all your shouts on the US” and of course, on the Zionist enemy.

Normalizing ties with Zionist regime futile

5- The policy of normalizing the presence of the Zionist regime in the region is one of the main policies of the United States of America. Certain Arab governments in the region, which act as the minions of the US, have been preparing the ground for this normalization, by establishing economic ties and the like. These efforts are completely vain and futile. The Zionist regime is a deadly, cancerous growth and a detriment to this region. It will undoubtedly be uprooted and destroyed. Then, the shame will fall on those who put their facilities at the service of this policy of the arrogant powers. To justify such disgraceful behavior, some people argue that the Zionist regime is a reality that the region must come to terms with. They forget that it is necessary to fight and destroy fatal and harmful realities. Today the coronavirus is a reality and yet all wise people agree that it is necessary to fight it. Undoubtedly, the long-lasting virus of Zionism will not last much longer and it will be uprooted thanks to the determination, faith and pride of the youth.

Everyone must help Palestinian fighters

6- My main advice is to continue this struggle and to better organize the organizations for Jihad work, and to expand the arenas of Jihad inside Palestinian territories. Everyone must assist the Palestinian nation in this holy struggle. Everyone must contribute to the Palestinian fighters and stand behind them. We will proudly do everything in our power on this path. One day we came to the conclusion that the Palestinian fighters had piety, pride and courage and their only problem was that they had no weapons in their hands. With divine guidance and assistance, we planned and the result was that the balance of power was transformed in Palestine, and today Gaza can stand against the aggression of the Zionist enemy and defeat it. This change in the equations in the occupied lands will bring the question of Palestine closer to the final steps. The Palestinian Authority has a great responsibility in this regard. One cannot communicate with a savage enemy except through force and from a position of power. Thankfully, the ground has been prepared for the brave and resistant people of Palestine to gain this power. Today, the Palestinian youth are yearning to defend their dignity.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Palestine and Hezbollah in Lebanon have been a proof for everyone. The world has not forgotten and will not forget the day when the Zionist army broke through the Lebanese borders and marched to Beirut or the day when a criminal murderer by the name of Ariel Sharon caused a bloodbath in Sabra and Chatila. It has not forgotten and will not forget the day when the same army pounded by Hezbollah had no choice but to retreat from the borders of Lebanon and beg for a truce after sustaining heavy casualties and admitting defeat. This is what full hands and a position of power means. Now let that European government, which should be eternally ashamed for selling chemical agents to the regime of Saddam Hussein, designate the devoted Hezbollah as illegal. Illegal is a regime like the US that creates ISIS and a regime like that European government whose chemical agents caused the death of thousands in the city of Baneh in Iran and the city of Halabja in Iraq.

Palestine belongs to Palestinians

7- My final word is that Palestine belongs to the Palestinians; therefore, it should be run as they wish. The referendum - with the participation of all Palestinians of all religions and ethnicities; this is what we have been suggesting for almost two decades - is the only solution for the challenges which Palestine is facing at the present time and in the future. This proposal shows that the western accusations of anti-Semitism which have been repeated time and time again are completely unfounded. On the basis of this proposal, Jewish, Christian and Muslim Palestinians will determine, together, the political system of their country by participating in a referendum. That which should definitely go is the Zionist regime, since Zionism is a bizarre innovation which has been fabricated in the name of Judaism and is totally alien to that religion.

I would like to close this speech by remembering the martyrs of Quds, including Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, Fathi Shaqaqi, Sayyid Abbas al-Musawi, Martyr Soleimani, the great Muslim commander and the unforgettable face of resistance, and also the great Iraqi Mujahid, Martyr Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. I extend my greetings to the soul of the great Imam Khomeini (r.a.) who opened the path of dignity and Jihad for us. I also ask God the Exalted to bestow His mercy on our late brother, Hussein Sheikh al-Islam who for years worked hard diligently on this path.

May God’s greetings and mercy be upon you.

We forgive' father's killers, said journalist Khashoggi's sons

 jamal Khashoggi
The sons of murdered Saudi journalist and critic Jamal Khashoggi said on Friday they "forgive" the killers of their father — a move that can potentially grant leniency to five convicted people facing death penalty.

Khashoggi -- a royal family insider turned critic -- was killed and dismembered at the kingdom´s consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, in a case that tarnished the reputation of de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

His family´s pardon could spare the lives of five unnamed people sentenced to death over the murder in a December court ruling that exonerated two top aides to the crown prince.

"On this holy night of this blessed month (of Ramadan)... we the sons of martyr Jamal Khashoggi announce we forgive and pardon those who killed our father," the Washington Post columnist´s son Salah Khashoggi said on Twitter.

Saudi authorities did not immediately comment on the legal ramifications of the announcement from Salah, who resides in the kingdom and has denied reports of a financial settlement with the government.

"What this essentially means is that the killers will avoid capital punishment since that is a right the family (under sharia law) has to forgive," Ali Shihabi, a Saudi author and analyst close to the government said on Twitter.

"Other legal procedures by the state continue."

Analyst Nabeel Nowairah also said the family´s declaration effectively means the "murderers will not be executed".

Salah has previously said he had "full confidence" in the judicial system, and criticised opponents he said were seeking to exploit the case.

The Washington Post reported last year that Khashoggi´s children, including Salah, had received multimillion-dollar homes and were being paid thousands of dollars per month by authorities.

Salah rejected the report, denying discussing a financial settlement with the Saudi government.

Out of 11 individuals indicted in the case -- most of whom remain unnamed -- five were sentenced to death, three face jail terms totalling 24 years and the others were acquitted, according to the public prosecutor.

The December verdict, which was lambasted by rights groups as a travesty of justice, underscored Saudi efforts to draw a line under the crisis as it seeks to reboot its international image ahead of this year´s G20 summit in Riyadh.

The murder involved 15 Saudi agents sent from Riyadh, Ankara said.

Riyadh has described the murder as a "rogue" operation, but both the CIA and a United Nations special envoy have directly linked Prince Mohammed to the killing, a charge the kingdom vehemently denies.

Khashoggi, a 59-year-old critic of the crown prince, was strangled and his body cut into pieces by a 15-man Saudi squad inside the consulate, according to Turkish officials. His remains have not been found.

Saudi prosecutors had said deputy intelligence chief Ahmed al-Assiri oversaw Khashoggi´s killing and the US Treasury had claimed the royal court´s media czar Saud al-Qahtani was "part of the planning and execution" of the operation that led to the murder.

Qahtani was investigated but not indicted "due to insufficient evidence" and Assiri was charged, but eventually acquitted on the same grounds, according to the public prosecutor.

Both aides were part of Prince Mohammed´s tight-knit inner circle and were formally sacked over the killing, but only Assiri appeared in the court hearings, according to Western sources.

95 killed as ‘super cyclone’ ravages Bangladesh and India

uper cyclone
India and Bangladesh began a massive clean-up Thursday after the fiercest cyclone since 1999 killed at least 95 people, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Cyclone Amphan flattened houses, uprooted trees, blew off roofs and toppled electricity pylons, while a storm surge inundated coastal villages and wrecked shrimp farms vital to the local economy.

The United Nations office in Bangladesh estimates 10 million people were affected, and some 500,000 people may have lost their homes.

But the death toll was far lower than the many thousands killed in previous cyclones -- a result of improved weather forecasting and better response plans.

The disaster has raised fears, however, that overcrowding in storm shelters will exacerbate the spread of coronavirus.

India´s West Bengal reported 72 deaths -- including 15 in the capital Kolkata -- with state premier Mamata Banerjee saying: "I haven´t seen a disaster of this magnitude."

"This is the worst cyclone to hit the state since the one in 1737 when thousands lost their lives," she told reporters. Banerjee earlier described the cyclone´s impact as "worse than coronavirus".

Twenty-three people have died in Bangladesh, according to the official death toll.

India´s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will survey the damage in West Bengal and Odisha states on Friday, as well as take part in aid meetings.

Modi tweeted earlier that "no stone will be left unturned in helping the affected".

Improved weather forecasting meant Bangladesh was able to move some 2.4 million people into shelters or out of the storm´s direct path, while India evacuated some 650,000.

At least 10 million people were without power on Thursday afternoon in the worst-hit districts of Bangladesh, said rural electricity board chief Moin Uddin.

The storm levelled more than 55,000 homes -- most made of tin, mud and bamboo -- across Bangladesh, junior disaster management minister Enamur Rahman told AFP.

Kolkata residents woke to flooded streets, with part of the city´s yellow taxi fleet up to their bonnets in water in one neighbourhood and many areas without power.

"Each second seemed like an hour," bank manager Susanta De said of the storm.

"There were only howling winds and sounds of shattering window panes. All of it was very scary and we thought the end was nearing."

Bangladesh´s Sundarbans forest chief Moyeen Uddin Khan told AFP the storm surge that smashed into the vast mangrove area -- which bore the brunt of the storm -- was "not as high as was feared earlier".

He said Amphan´s impact on wildlife, especially the forest´s endangered Bengal tigers, was not yet known.

- Virus, cyclone double blow -

The cyclone weakened as it moved north through Bangladesh but still unleashed heavy rain and fierce winds in Cox´s Bazar, the district which houses about one million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.

The UN said the effect in the vast camps of flimsy shacks appeared to be "fairly minimal".

The area most affected by Amphan, the first "super cyclone" to form over the Bay of Bengal since 1999, was the Satkhira district of southwest Bangladesh.

There a storm surge -- a wall of ocean water which is often one of the main killers in major weather systems -- roared inland and destroyed embankments protecting villages and shrimp farms.

"My home has gone under water. My shrimp farm is gone. I don´t know how I am going to survive," Omar Faruq, 28, told AFP.

Jessore, the district next to Satkhira and which borders West Bengal, was also hard hit with at least 12 killed.

"The coronavirus has already taken a toll on people. Now the cyclone has made them paupers," said local councillor Bhabotosh Kumar Mondal.

The last super cyclone in 1999 left nearly 10,000 dead in Odisha, eight years after a typhoon, tornadoes and flooding killed 139,000 in Bangladesh.

This time, as during a cyclone in Odisha last year, the human cost was greatly lessened thanks to the evacuations, said Rahman.

"Only several people died. The majority of them ventured out to collect fallen mangoes during the storm," he told AFP.

Natural disaster expert Nayeem Wahra, at the Disaster Forum think-tank, said the storm also lost some of its potency over the Bay of Bengal before it made landfall.

"The storm surge was not powerful or high enough to cause extensive damage to lives or properties," Wahra told AFP.

"Bangladesh was largely spared."

Packing people into shelters, however, raised the risk of coronavirus spreading, with cases still surging in India and Bangladesh.

Charity WaterAid also warned water sources could have been contaminated by the cyclone, making hand-washing and other hygiene practices to combat the spread of the coronavirus more difficult.
