Pride for Pakistan: Avenue named after Jinnah formally inaugurated in Brooklyn

Coney Island Avenue will now be known as Muhammad Ali Jinnah Way
Amid vociferous slogans of “Pakistan Zindabad”, a section of a busy Brooklyn avenue which was renamed after the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in December last year, was formally inaugurated at a largely-attended ceremony on Feb 9.

The decision to re-name the Coney Island Avenue, where the Pakistani community is concentrated, was taken on December 26 – Quaid’s birthday- when the New York City Council adopted a resolution to honour the founder of Pakistan.

The move was the result of years of hard work and lobbying effort by the Pakistani community, especially the Pakistani-American Youth Organization (PAYO).

As Jumaane Williams, a city council member from Brooklyn who successfully piloted the resolution, unveiled, with the help of a string, the road sign “Muhammad Ali Jinnah Way” atop a pole, multi-coloured confetti was shot up in celebration, while Pakistani-Americans, carrying Pakistan’s flags, burst into cheers and chanted slogans.

Pakistani Consul-General in New York, Naeem Iqbal Cheema, was a special guest at the event.

PAYO President Waqil Ahmad profusely thanked Williams and other city council members for their efforts in realizing their dream of having “Muhammad Ali Jinnah Way” in the area around the Coney Island Avenue, known as “little Pakistan.

“It is a gift to the Pakistani-American community here as well as to the people of Pakistan,” he added.

Williams, the city council member, said it was an honour for him to serve the Pakistani community and to inaugurate the renamed avenue.

He said he was aware of the suffering members’ Pakistani community had to endure following the 9/11 attacks.

But through resilience, the Pakistani community has now reached a point that the New York City Council bestowed a special honour on the father of their nation.

Consul General Cheema said that today’s ceremony reflected the close relations and friendship between the Pakistani community and the New York City Council.

He paid tributes to the Pakistani community, specially PAYO, for their hard work and for raising Pakistan”s prestige in the United States.

Cheema said the Council’s decision to honour the Quaid was a recognition of the great statesman, an outstanding lawyer and a revered political leader whose epic struggle resulted in the creation of Pakistan.

Dr Ijaz Ahmad, head of America-Pakistan Political Action Committee (APPAC), urged the Pakistani community members to take an active part in American politics in order to raise their profile.

YDA Punjab threatens to protest in favour of their demands

The Young Doctors Association on Sunday called for Punjab-wide protests
The Young Doctors Association (YDA) on Sunday called for Punjab-wide protests in favour of their demands.

As per details, the junior doctors of Lahore initiated token boycott of the OPDs and have called on a meeting tomorrow, to discuss strategy to gear-up their protest.

The YDA is protesting against suspension of Benaizr Bhutto Hospital’s MS Dr Tariq Masood Khan Niazi, and four of their colleagues in Sheikh Zayed Hospital.

Addressing a press conference along with the office-bearers, Punjab YDA President Dr Qasim Awan alleged that government wanted to impose failed system of KP in the province, which is not acceptable to them.

“We will not accept MTI act, will protest if demands were not met,” he continued.

The provincial health secretary had removed Dr Niazi from his post on Monday, February 4th, and had assigned the additional charge of the Medical Superintendent to Dr Samina, a BPS-20 officer.

Niazi was removed from the post under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability Act 2006 (PEEDA Act 2006) over ‘exhibiting negligence’ in his duties.

The development came weeks after Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat made headlines for allegedly threatening the medical superintendent to send him packing for disobeying his orders with regards to transferring Dr Areeba Abbasi currently posted at the emergency department of the hospital to the skin department.

CNG stations reopen after two days across Sindh

Compressed natural gas stations reopened across Sindh
Compressed natural gas (CNG) stations reopened on Sunday after being closed for two days in the metropolis.

On Thursday, the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) had suspended gas supply to all CNG stations due to a shortage of 100 million square feet of gas.

Domestic consumers had complained regarding extremely low gas pressure as the shortage became acute.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had written a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan as the gas crisis had worsened.

In his letter, the Sindh chief minister noted that the suspension of gas supply was creating difficulties for domestic and commercial consumers.

“The relevant ministry should be directed to provide Sindh with gas as per Article 158 of the Constitution,” Shah wrote to the premier.

Violence in Paris as 'yellow vests' keep marching

Yellow Vests protesters face police officers during a demonstration in Paris
Thousands of French “yellow vest” demonstrators marched on Saturday for their 13th weekend of action, with scuffles in Paris and a demonstrator’s hand mangled by a small explosive.

There was also an overnight arson attack on the Brittany residence of the National Assembly head though no immediate link was made to the actions against President Emmanuel Macron.

The “yellow vest” demonstrators, named for high-visibility car jackets, began in mid-November over fuel taxes then broadened into a more general revolt against a political class they view as out of touch with common people.

In Paris, several thousand marched on Saturday beside symbols of power such as the National Assembly and Senate.

Though mainly peaceful, some protesters threw objects at security forces, a scooter and a police van were set on fire, and some shop windows were smashed.

One participant’s hand was severely injured when he tried to pick up a so-called “sting-ball grenade” used by police to disperse crowds with teargas, a police source told Reuters.

Another man had blood streaming down his face in front of a line of riot police.

The Interior Ministry put the total number of protesters around France at 12,000, including 4,000 in Paris.

The police source, however, said numbers were higher, with 21,000 demonstrators taking part in rallies outside Paris.

“We’re not children, we’re adults,” said Hugues Salone, a computer engineer from Paris, among the chanting and placard-waving protesters.

“We really want to assert our choices and not the choices of the politicians who do not live up to them.”

Leaders of the “yellow vest” movement have denounced the police for injuring protesters, but have also struggled to contain violence from their own lines.
On some previous weekends, Paris has been a battleground.

Politicians from across the political spectrum condemned the arson attack on the home of Richard Ferrand, a close ally of Macron and president of parliament’s lower house.

He published pictures on Twitter of a scorched living room, saying police found materials soaked in fuel. Ferrand said criminal intent was the likely cause, though the perpetrators’ identity was unclear.

“Nothing justifies intimidations and violence towards an elected official of the Republic,” Macron tweeted in relation to the incident.

PM Imran to meet IMF Managing Director for talks on bailout in Dubai

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan will meet International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Christine Lagarde in Dubai today (Sunday) for talks on issues which have held up bailout negotiations.

Pakistan is seeking its 13th bailout since the late 1980s to deal with a current account deficit that threatens to trigger a balance of payments crisis, but talks have been delayed by difficulties in reconciling IMF reform demands with Islamabad’s fears the push is too drastic and could hurt economic growth.

The premier is in Dubai on a day-long visit, on the invitation of Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum to participate in the seventh edition of the World Government Summit.

He is accompanied by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Asad Umar, Minister for Maritime Affairs Syed Ali Haider Zaidi and Adviser to the PM on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood.

This annual gathering of heads of states/government, policymakers, business leaders and experts will provide an occasion to discuss current and future opportunities to improve governance through reform, innovation and technology.

Speaking to Reuters, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said, the talks between PM Imran and Lagarde on the sidelines of the World Government Summit will give Pakistan a chance to give their version.

“This will give us a chance to understand the IMF views and we will be able to give our version to [Lagarde],” said Chaudhry.

He added, Pakistan wants any agreed bailout package, which would be the country’s second IMF bailout since 2013, to be the nation’s last such economic rescue by the IMF.

Officials had expected talks to conclude in November but they have been delayed as Islamabad harbours concerns that the programme could derail the economy and Khan’s plans for his term in office.

Pakistan has in the meantime sought financial assistance from Middle Eastern allies such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, who have loaned it in excess of $10 billion to ease the pressure on its dwindling foreign currency reserves.

“The problem is not the (IMF) deal, the problem is the condition attached to the deal,” Chaudhry said.

“We don’t want conditions that hurt Pakistan’s growth prospects. We want a fair deal that can actually help Pakistan in the short term, without affecting our long-term economic goals.”

The IMF talks come amid a worsening macroeconomic outlook, with growth expectations slashed for the current fiscal year to about 4 per cent from 6 per cent previously forecast.

On Saturday, Pakistan also revised its growth figures for the last financial year to 5.2 percent from a previously reported 5.8 percent, after a sharp cut in the figure for large-scale manufacturing, the statistics office said.

When the original estimate was reported in April by the government of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi it was hailed as the strongest growth in 13 years.

Before the revisions to last year’s GDP figures, Pakistan’s deficit to GDP ratio, estimated at 5.8 per cent in 2017-18, was expected to hit 6.9 per cent this year, according to IMF data.

During his visit to Dubai, PM Imran will underscore Pakistan's strong interest in the knowledge economy, artificial intelligence, green development and the importance of innovation for growth.

In his keynote address at the summit, the premier will highlight his vision for a strong and prosperous Pakistan.

He will encourage investment in different sectors of Pakistan economy.

He will also meet the UAE leadership during his visit.

Forget chocolates, how about cockroaches as Valentine's gift?

Zoo officials say Madagascar hissing cockroaches (pictured above) would likely be used for the feast.
Forget chocolates, flowers or a romantic dinner. A zoo in Texas is offering singles the chance to name a cockroach after their ex and see it fed to a meerkat live on camera on Valentine’s Day.

In a campaign dubbed “Quit Bugging Me!!!” the El Paso Zoo says the roach is a perfect Valentine’s gift for those needing closure on a past relationship that didn’t make the grade.

It said a cockroach would be assigned to each nominee and the bugs would be fed to meerkats in an event streamed on the zoo’s website and Facebook page on February 14.

Zoo officials said Madagascar hissing cockroaches would likely be used for the feast.

“They do actually hiss, they are a very large species of cockroach, definitely not the largest, but it is one that we actually do breed here at the zoo for feeding purposes,” Sarah Murphy, an education specialist at the zoo, told the local ABC station.

Germany to Restrict Facebook's Data Gathering Activities

Andreas Mundt, president of Germany's Federal Cartel Office addresses a news conference presenting findings of the anti-trust watchdog's investigation into Facebook's data collection practices in Bonn, Germany, Feb. 7, 2019.
Facebook has been ordered to curb its data collection practices in Germany after a landmark ruling on Thursday that the world's largest social network abused its market dominance to gather information about users without their consent.

Germany, where privacy concerns run deep, is in the forefront of a global backlash against Facebook, fueled by last year's Cambridge Analytica scandal in which tens of millions of Facebook profiles were harvested without their users' consent.

The country's antitrust watchdog objected in particular to how Facebook pools data on people from third-party apps — including its own WhatsApp and Instagram — and its online tracking of people who aren't even members through Facebook 'like' or 'share' buttons.

"In future, Facebook will no longer be allowed to force its users to agree to the practically unrestricted collection and assigning of non-Facebook data to their Facebook accounts," Federal Cartel Office chief Andreas Mundt said.

Facebook said it would appeal the decision, the culmination of a three-year probe, saying the regulator underestimated the competition it faced, and undermined Europe-wide privacy rules that took effect last year.

"We disagree with their conclusions and intend to appeal so that people in Germany continue to benefit fully from all our services," Facebook said in a blog post.

In its order, the cartel office said Facebook would only be allowed to assign data from WhatsApp or Instagram to its main Facebook app accounts if users consented voluntarily. Collecting data from third-party websites and assigning it to Facebook would similarly require consent.

If consent is withheld, Facebook would have to substantially restrict its collection and combining of data. It should develop proposals to do this within 12 months, subject to the outcome of appeal proceedings at the Duesseldorf Higher Regional Court that should be filed within a month.

If Facebook fails to comply, the cartel office said it could impose fines of up to 10 percent of the company's annual global revenues, which grew by 37 percent to $55.8 billion last year. Antitrust lawyer Thomas Vinje, a partner at Clifford Chance in Brussels, said the Cartel Office ruling had potentially far-reaching implications.

"This is a landmark decision," he told Reuters. "It's limited to Germany but strikes me as exportable and might have a significant impact on Facebook's business model."

Vinje said it would be tough for Facebook to persuade the court that the Cartel Office's definition of the market for social media, and its dominance, were misguided. This is a battle that many firms have fought in court and lost, he added.

Implications

German Justice Minister Katarina Barley welcomed the ruling. "Users are often unaware of this flow of data and cannot prevent it if they want to use the services," she told Reuters. "We need to be rigorous in tackling the abuse of power that comes with data."

The German antitrust regulator's powers were expanded in 2017 to include consumer protection in public-interest cases where it could argue that a company — such as Facebook — had so little competition that consumers lack any effective choice.

Facebook has an estimated 23 million daily active users in Germany, giving it a market share of 95 percent, according to the Cartel Office which considers Google+ — a rival social network that is being closed down to be its only competitor.

Facebook said the cartel office failed to recognize the extent of competition it faced from Google's YouTube or Twitter for users' attention, and also said the regulator was encroaching into areas that should be handled by data protection watchdogs.

Facebook is considering appealing on the data protection issues to the European Court of Justice, but here the Cartel Office may also have the upper hand, said Vinje, the lawyer.

"It seems to me that the Federal Cartel Office is informed by data protections, but not dependent on them, and that it has based its decision squarely on competition law," he said.

The European Commission said: "We are closely following the work of the Bundeskartellamt both in the framework of the European Competition Network and through direct contacts."

"The European legislator has made sure that there is now a regulation in place that addresses this type of conduct, namely the General Data Protection Regulation [GDPR]," it added.

As part of complying with the GDPR, Facebook said it had rebuilt the information its provides people about their privacy and the controls they have over their information, and improved the privacy 'choices' that they are offered. It would also soon launch a 'clear history' feature, it said.

Mundt also expressed concern over reports that Facebook, which counts 2.7 billion users worldwide, plans to merge the infrastructure of its Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram services.

"If I understand things correctly, this move would intensify the pooling of data," said Mundt. "It's not very hard to conclude that, putting it carefully, this could be relevant in antitrust terms. We would have to look at this very closely."

Facebook has said that discussions on such a move are at a very early stage.

IMF chief warns of high Arab public debt

Says region has yet to recover from global financial crisis and other economic dislocations over the past decade.
Public debt has rapidly increased in many Arab countries since the 2008 global financial crisis, due to persistently high budget deficits, the International Monetary Fund warned Saturday.

“Unfortunately, the region has yet to fully recover from the global financial crisis and other big economic dislocations over the past decade,” said IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde.

“Among oil importers, (economic) growth has picked up, but it is still below pre-crisis levels,” she told the Arab Fiscal Forum in Dubai.

Lagarde said public debt among Arab oil importing nations had increased from 64% to 85% of Gross Domestic Product in the decade since 2008.

Nearly half of these countries now have public debt of over 90% of GDP, she said.

Public debt among oil exporters – including the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council – rose from 13% of GDP to 33% of GDP, accelerated by the crash in oil prices around five years ago, Lagarde said.

“The oil exporters have not fully recovered from the dramatic oil price shock of 2014,” she said.

“Modest growth continues, but the outlook is highly uncertain.”

Lagarde said oil producing countries should look to renewable energy in the coming decades, in line with the Paris Agreement on climate change, which stipulates a reduction in greenhouse emissions.

The IMF last month lowered its economic growth forecasts for Saudi Arabia – the world’s top crude exporter – and the wider Middle East and North Africa region due to a renewed fall in oil prices, low output and geopolitical tensions.

Lagarde welcomed both spending and revenue reforms, including the introduction of a value added-tax (VAT) and excise duty by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

But she urged more reforms, anti-corruption measures and transparency.

“The economic path ahead for the region is challenging,” she added.

UN Ramps Up Humanitarian Aid Inside Venezuela

Venezuelans return to their country through the San Antonio del Tachira, Venezuela crossing, after shopping in Cucuta, Colombia, Friday, Feb. 8, 2019.
U.N. aid agencies are ramping up humanitarian aid inside Venezuela, while refusing to weigh in on the controversial political situation dividing the country and international community.

The United Nations reports the humanitarian needs inside Venezuela are critical. It says more than half a dozen U.N. agencies have been scaling up activities to meet the urgent health, nutritional and protection needs of the population since November.

However, it says a shortage of money is hampering its operations. It notes less than half of the U.N.'s $109.5 million appeal has been met.

More than 50 metric tons of U.S. humanitarian aid is being blocked at the Colombia border by disputed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who says there is no humanitarian crisis in his country.

Jens Laerke is spokesman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. He would not comment on the U.S.-Venezuelan standoff but he tells VOA the United Nations is closely monitoring the situation on the border.

"The ideal scenario is that humanitarian aid is provided independent, independent of any political or other considerations, then the pure humanitarian and that is based on need and need alone," Laerke said.

An estimated 3 million Venezuelans have fled chronic food and medical shortages in their country since mid-2017. World Food Program Spokesman, Herve Verhoosel, says people arriving at the Colombia border reflect the depth of misery endured by people in Venezuela.

"1.2 million people just last year; 1.2 million people were coming, starving from Colombia with no money, no food, no medicine," Verhoosel said. "Then there is no question, whatever the numbers are. Yes, of course there is a crisis in the country."

Verhoosel says the U.N. helps people in need in an impartial manner, independent of politics. He says the U.N. does not take sides. He says WFP is prepositioning food in Colombia, which will be distributed to the hungry inside Venezuela as soon as it receives authorization to enter the country.

Netherlands reports dozens Brexit-related company moves from UK

More than 40 companies last year moved, or said they would move, their operations from Britain to the Netherlands in response to Brexit uncertainties, Dutch authorities reported on Saturday.
More than 40 companies last year moved, or said they would move, their operations from Britain to the Netherlands in response to Brexit uncertainties, Dutch authorities reported on Saturday.

The combined moves of 42 companies will translate into the shift of just under 2,000 jobs and of 291 million euros ($330 million) in investments, the Dutch agency for foreign investment said in a statement.

Most of the companies are British, but some are from Asia or the United States.

The Dutch government welcomed the figures, with Economy Minister Eric Wiebes saying that "due to the growing international uncertainty surrounding Brexit and changing global trade policies, the importance of a good Dutch business climate for all of us is continually increasing".

The list includes Japanese investment bank Norinchukin, media company TVT Media, financial services providers MarketAxess and Azimo, and maritime insurer UK P&I, the agency said.

Some of the companies were also looking at moving some operations elsewhere in the European Union (EU), including Germany, France and Ireland, it said.

In addition to relocations by corporates, the European Medicines Agency (EMA), an EU agency, has said that it will move from London to Amsterdam as it cannot legally remain in a non-EU country.

Britain is to leave the EU on March 29, and uncertainty about the shape of any agreement with Brussels by that date has created unease in the business community, with many British and multinational companies having already announced moves to elsewhere in the EU.

Pashto singer Shakila Naz is recording a new album after 28 years

Shakila last performed 28 years ago
Pashto singer Shakila Naz, who bid adieu to her singing career due to a shift in personal life, has resumed singing after a lapse of 28 years.

'Naway Jwand’ meaning new life is her new Pashto album’s title, which says a lot about her desire to start life anew.

Interestingly, the lyrics of the title song are written by her writer and poet husband, Farooq Firaq, who has been a driving force for almost a year to encourage her to start singing again.

Mr Firaq succeeded at last and even held a special gathering to re-launch his wife’s career as a singer. All known faces of Pashto literature, music and media were present at the launch of Shakila’s music album. It was also her first public appearance after almost 28 years.

The king of Pashto ghazal, Khiyal Mohammad, despite being on wheelchair, went on stage to show his support and welcome the singer into her new life.

Queen of folk songs Zar Sanga in her frank rustic style and attire said she was relieved that finally, amid all maddening modern music, a melodious voice reminiscent of the past musical years would be heard again.

“Long time ago when I was singing, Pakhtuns lived in peace. A lot has happened since then. This region and people have seen terrorism and pain. I have restarted my life as a singer with a song yearning for a new life of peace and filled with love,” said Shakila, who sang the song ‘Naway Jwand’ written by Farooq Firaq.

Khiyal Mohammad thought singer could never stop singing and it was only natural for them to sing but he also appreciated the poets for giving words to the singers to sing. Some famous Pashto poets like Rehmat Shah Sail, Abaseen Yousafzai, Bakhzada Danish and other singers like Karan Khan, Nazia Iqbal, Mehjabeen Qazalbash were also present in the gathering.

Former PTV general manager Farmanullah Jan appreciating Shakila’s talent shared how he gave a chance to young singers like to sing on national TV. He said he would give singers full one hour to sing songs and prove their talent. He once even ordered a colour camera from Lahore studio to Peshawar to record Naz’s songs.

Shakila Naz, who was born in Mardan district, actually belonged to a traditional family of singers from Gandaf (Gadoon) in Swabi. Famous Pashto singers like Chisti Chaman Jan and Mehrunnisa from her family have already earned fame. Shakila’s sisters, including Farida Khan, Iqbal Bano and Samina Naz, were also singers. Her father, Ustad Faqir Mohammad, was a good harmonium player besides being her music teacher.

Shakila sang her first song on the national TV. The song, ‘Gul Basheray Dagha Gul Bas Dey, Nur Mashokawa Gul…' (O you with face of a flower, you need not pluck any flower anymore…) was a hit as young and pretty face Shakila appeared on TV.

In Naway Jwand album, she sang the song again but with modern musical instruments. The lyrics of other songs and music may be new but Shakila’s voice has the same old poignancy. To some it sounds intoxicating but others might think her voice to be a bit poignant. This might be the reason that despite singing the song, 'Naway Jwand' (new life), the voice sounds as old as Gul Bashray’s.

Shakila, who had been a known voice in the 1984-1991 period, had been silent for too long. She is said to have gone abroad to avoid some family issues but even then, she never died and was resurrected by the Naway Jawand song.

Other than Lebanon’s Hariri, country leaders attending the summit include Estonia’s PM Jüri Ratas and President of Rwanda Paul Kagame.

The summit will begin on Sunday, Feb. 10 and run until Tuesday, Feb. 12 in Dubai.

FIA: Supreme Court's help in collecting evidence in Asghar Khan case

Asghar Khan case
The report submitted states that the FIA had tried to "unearth the facts and bring truth to light, but the investigation has reached a dead end".

In a compliance report submitted to the Supreme Court on Saturday, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has sought the help and guidance of the apex court in collecting sufficient evidence in the case concerning the manipulation of the 1990 elections and the implementation of the Supreme Court's landmark 2012 verdict on it.

The apex court will resume hearing a case regarding the implementation of the 2012 verdict on Monday (February 11).

On Jan 11, then former chief justice (r) mian saqib nisar, after accepting the plea of the family of the late Air Marshal Asghar Khan, had ordered fixing of the matter before a bench after his retirement.

A three-member bench of the apex court, consisting of Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, will take up the case on Feb 11.

On Dec 29, 2018, the FIA had suggested to the SC that it close the implementation case since it did not have enough evidence to launch a criminal prosecution against individuals named in the judgement.

In an earlier hearing, the court had decided that it was not satisfied with the conclusions reached by the FIA and asked the agency to submit a response to Khan's family's joint reply in which they opposed the suggestion to close the case.

In its report submitted today, the FIA said they had left "no stone unturned in tracing evidence relating to the disbursement of alleged money to politicians".

They said all important witnesses, including central figure retired Brig Hamid Saeed Akhtar, had been examined.

Bank records were scrutinised while statements of the concerned bank officers were also recorded. Politicians were also interviewed, the FIA has said.

As per the FIA report, the assistance of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Ministry of Defence had also been sought. The report stated that over 190 television programmes were analysed and the defence ministry had been contacted to provide information regarding details required to find necessary evidence.

However, the investigation could not reach a logical conclusion as no Army officer gave any statement of handing over money to any private person directly.

It added that documents provided by retired Brig Hamid Saeed Akhtar showed that money was distributed in Sindh, but he had not disclosed the names of officers who actually distributed the money. Receipts of the money being received by politicians, which the brigadier had mentioned, were also not provided to the FIA.

As per the report, Brig Hamid said the receipts were sent to General Headquarters (GHQ), but when FIA asked retd Gen Asad Durrani, he denied having any information of such receipts.

The FIA added that despite the FIA writing to the defence ministry about the whereabouts of certain intelligence agency personnel, the intelligence agency team responsible for the distribution of funds in Punjab and elsewhere could not be ascertained.

Additionally, the FIA said that certain bank account details, which would complete the money trail needed for prosecution, had not been provided.

The report added that since the Army and intelligence officers were the "primary responsible" for the distribution of money to private individuals and politicians, splitting the investigation into two parts — namely the Army and civil — would create "practical difficulties" for the civilian agency during the investigation.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Saturday welcomed the resumption of the case hearings.

In a message shared on Twitter, Chaudhry added that Prime Minister Imran Khan had already given the FIA orders to act upon the apex court's orders pertaining to the case.

The information minister added that the case makes the "political character" of the PML-N "evident", adding that in a veiled swipe at the PPP.

That it was "interesting" that the political heirs of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, who had been the main target of those who engineered the 1990s election were now "sitting in PML-N's lap".

Moreover, PPP provincial minister Saeed Ghani praised the apex court for hearing the Asghar Khan reference and demanded that a TV interview of philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi should also be made part of the reference.

He alleged that the national exchequer was looted to hamper the political progress of Benazir Bhutto. “Millions of rupees were spent on the character assassination of Benazir Bhutto and her husband Asif Ali Zardari,” Ghani added.

In 1996, Asghar Khan had filed a human rights petition in the SC, accusing Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of doling out money to a group of politicians in the 1990s.

The case was initiated by the air marshal after Benazir Bhutto's interior minister, retired general Naseerullah Babar, had claimed in the National Assembly in 1994 that the ISI had disbursed funds to "purchase" the loyalty of politicians and public figures so as to manipulate the 1990 elections, form the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI), and bring about the defeat of the PPP.

Sixteen years after the petition was filed, the SC in its judgement penned by then chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry ruled that the 1990s general elections had been "polluted" by dishing out Rs140m to a particular group of politicians only to deprive the people of being represented by their chosen representatives.

The court had, however, thrown the ball back to the then PPP government by directing it to take necessary action under the Constitution and law against former army chief, retired Gen Mirza Aslam Beg, and former director general of ISI, retired Lt Gen Asad Durrani, for their role in facilitating the group of politicians and political parties to ensure their success against their rivals in the 1990 elections.

On May 7, 2018, an SC bench had rejected Beg and Durrani's petitions to review the October 19, 2012 apex court verdict in the Asghar Khan case.

South Korean women begin to push back at unrealistic beauty standards

25-year-old Park I Seul calls herself a “natural size model”, which she defines as someone with the same kind of body you see in daily life
As she pursued her dream of becoming a fashion model, veering for years between extreme dieting and overeating, Park I Seul realized she had a problem: She was not tall and skinny, like typical runway models, nor was she big enough to be a plus-size model.

She also realized that the only way to meet South Korea’s lofty beauty standards was for her to continuously deny who she truly is.

So Park, 25, began calling herself a “natural size model” — a nearly unheard of term in South Korea — which she defines as someone with the same kind of body you see in daily life, as opposed to a difficult-to-attain ideal. She began to get work, and she started a popular YouTube channel where she introduces fashions for women who look more like her than like the women in fashion magazines.

Her newfound positive view of her body makes her part of a growing movement by South Korean women to resist what they see as extreme pressure to look a certain way.

Hundreds of young women have taken to social media with the hashtag “talcorset,” or take off the corset, to encourage others to free themselves from social stereotypes about their appearance that they feel have long bound them.

Park recently held what she called a “nondiscriminatory” fashion show in Seoul, where models varied in height and weight confidently strode across the stage. Other women have posted online photos or video clips showing themselves cutting their hair short, destroying their beauty products and going to school or work without makeup.

In South Korea, a woman weighing over 50 kilograms (110 pounds) is considered by many to be chubby, regardless of how tall she is.

Park herself is 165 centimeters (5 feet 5 inches) tall and weighs 62 kilograms (137 pounds), which she says puts her far from the minimum 170 centimeters (5 feet 7 inches) and 40 to 48 kilograms (88 to 106 pounds) weight that conventional fashion models have; she’s also nowhere near the XL and above sizes demanded for plus-size models.

“I used to think that my fat body wasn’t the real me and that living in such a body wasn’t my real life. I kept denying myself. I believed that my life would only become happy after I lost weight,” Park said. “I’ve come to think that I look good enough just the way I am.”

As more women begin to embrace feminism, there’s also a new willingness to challenge strict South Korean societal demands that force women to take extreme care of their looks, according to Sohn Hee-jeong, a researcher at the Institute of Gender Studies at Yonsei University in Seoul.

Consider, for instance, a video by Cha Ji Won, a 24-year-old YouTuber who runs a channel called “Korean Womyn.” The video, which has gotten more than 720,000 views, shows her daily routine after she stopped obsessing over her hair and wearing makeup every day and began choosing and wearing comfortable clothes. It now takes her half the time to prepare to go outside as in the past, and she says she eats whatever she wants and doesn’t think about calories.

“I hoped that by letting other women know that there is someone like me, I could remind them that they don’t have to care too much (about how they look) and spend so much money and time on their appearance,” Cha said in an interview.

The movement can also be found in schools.

An 18-year-old high school senior who wished to be identified only by her last name, Hong, because of worries about her future studies recently exposed a series of lectures at her all girls’ school that promoted a focus on women’s appearance as they entered college. The lecture titles included, “Makeup for college freshmen,” ″Fashion styling for college freshmen” and “How to make a healthy body figure.”

Hong objected to her high school recommending classes that appeared to encourage female students to “take care” of their appearance. Hong and some other students contacted journalists to complain about the lectures, prompting the school to remove the classes.

Hong said she put on makeup for the first time when she was in elementary school and was wearing full makeup by high school. She no longer wears makeup and questions why women must always be judged on how they look. However, many children are ashamed of what in Korean is called ssaeng-eol, or bare face, Hong says, and won’t go outside without makeup.

Choi Min Jeong, a former employee at a beverage company, still remembers her boss telling her that she had to work harder because she wasn’t as beautiful as a popular South Korean actress.

“Although he said it as a joke, I thought it was ridiculous that he said it when ... my job was unrelated to appearance,” Choi said.

Airline companies often demand a stricter dress code for female flight attendants, according to Kwon Su Jeong, a Seoul councilwoman who has worked for Asiana, a major South Korean airline, for 24 years. Kwon is currently on a leave of absence to work in the city council.

“They control everything, from your hairstyle to the color of your lipstick and nails to the length and shape of your earrings,” Kwon said.

Although Asiana eased a “skirts-only” rule in 2013, many flight attendants still wear them because of worries of negative performance appraisals, Kwon said. Asiana strongly denied that it makes unfair demands or puts pressure on its employees regarding attire or appearance.

Kwon said the company’s upper management wants its flight attendants to uphold an image of a graceful, beautiful Asian woman who provides sincere service to customers. Because the company cares a lot about the appearance of its female employees it puts subtle pressure on them to have cosmetic procedures, she said.

“Although the company is rigid about taking a day off because of injury at work, it is more lenient about taking time off for cosmetic procedures,” Kwon said.

The giant Chinese companies shaping the world's industries

The merger by Alstom and Siemens was vetoed by the European Union on Thursday, but concerns about the overwhelming power of vast, often state-backed Chinese companies is not limited to the rail industry.
It was fear of being dominated by a Chinese behemoth that sparked an attempt by large French and German rail companies to join forces to create a European industrial champion.

The merger by Alstom and Siemens was vetoed by the European Union on Thursday, but concerns about the overwhelming power of vast, often state-backed Chinese companies is not limited to the rail industry.

Here are some of areas in which Chinese companies control a large piece of the global market:

Rail
China's state-backed CRRC is the world's largest train manufacturer, with locomotives and wagons ordered across the globe from Boston to Philadelphia, Cambodia to Colombia, and customers including the iconic London Underground and Germany's Deutsche Bahn.

Its annual revenues of 26 billion euros ($29 billion) alone outweigh the three Western heavyweights Bombardier, Siemens and Alstom, each of which brings in around nine billion a year.

Agrichemicals
The state-owned ChemChina became one of the world's seeds and pesticide producers when it acquired Swiss pesticide giant Syngenta for $43 billion in 2017, putting it in competition with Monsanto and DowDupont.

It was the biggest overseas acquisition by a Chinese firm yet, ahead of the $15.1 billion purchase of Canada's Nexen Energy by China's state oil firm CNOOC in 2013.

ChemChina also controls Italian tyremaker Pirelli and German machinery firm KraussMaffei.

Energy
The state-run China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC) launched its locally developed Hualong One nuclear reactor in 2015 to compete with French and US models, selling to Argentina and Pakistan.

Chinese solar panel manufacturers Jinko, Trina and Solar dominate the global market.

And Chinese oil companies — CNOOC, CNPC and Sinopec — are investing heavily even as their global rivals cut spending.

Aviation
China's state-owned plane-maker Comac expects to deliver its first home-made passenger jet to a customer in 2021, as it seeks to challenge the dominance of Boeing and Airbus.

The company says it has received a thousand orders for its 168-seater C919 plane.

Food
The state-owned food giant COFCO is playing an increasing role in world grain trading after purchasing the agricultural arm of Singaporean commodities trader Noble as well as Dutch Nidera.

China's WH Group became the world's largest pork producer in 2013, when it purchased major US pork and hot dog producer Smithfield Foods Inc.

Drones
Founded by a Chinese university student in 2006, DJI has become the world's top civilian drone maker with 70 per cent of the market, outpacing its French rival Parrot.

Smartphones
Chinese smartphone makers are taking a larger slice of the global market, with Huawei at 15 per cent, Xiaomi 8.7 per cent and Oppo 8.1 per cent.

Phone sales by Huawei and Oppo surged by 30 per cent last year, defying a downward trend that hit rivals Apple and Samsung.

Home appliances
China's Haier Group is the world's leading manufacturer of home appliances with around 10 per cent of the market, ahead of rivals Whirlpool and Electrolux.

Haier even purchased the appliances arm of US giant General Electric in 2016.

Batteries
Chinese firm CATL, which supplies batteries for car titans Volkswagen, Ford and Daimler, is battling with Japan's Panasonic for the world's lithium electric car battery top spot.

Its production capacity will increase fivefold by 2020 due to a mammoth new factory in China, and the firm has announced a huge factory in Germany to supply European customers.

Freight
The state-owned Cosco Group is the world's third-biggest shipping company with 50 container ports across the globe, including Greece's Piraeus and Spain's Bilbao.

330 puppet shows will take place in the Pakistan String Puppetry Festival

330 puppet shows will take place in the Pakistan String Puppetry Festival
The ongoing second Pakistan String Puppetry Festival organised by Thespianz Theatre is taking place in 11 neighbourhoods of Karachi and will continue till July 31. This was said by Faisal Malik of the theatre group at a press conference at a hotel here on Friday.

Mr Malik said the 11 neighbourhoods (Sakhi Hasan, Gulzar-i-Hijri, Shirin Jinnah Colony, Mauripur, Pehlwan Goth, Chakiwara, Chakra Goth, Khadda Memon, Saeedabad, Ibrahim Hyderi and Paposh Nagar) of the city in which the event can be seen exist on the outskirts of Karachi and mainly has slum areas. The performances were created to convey a positive message to the people, which is to promote inter-faith harmony.

Mr Malik said the event began on Jan 14 and will continue till July 31. During this period 330 shows will be put up. That makes it the festival with the longest duration in the country.

Dr Asma Ibrahim said the art of puppetry is 3,000 years old. When it started in Greece the ideas was to ward off bad social omens. Over the years, the art form has changed quite a bit. The cause that Malik and his team are working for should be supported because it intends to create awareness among the masses about something important. Puppetry is one medium through which we could teach our younger generation a great many subjects, and inculcate good values in them.

The other aspect that Dr Ibrahim touched upon is the need to take the festival at the ‘level of government’ because to date there is no institution which teaches this art form. It needs to be taken with seriousness.

Nauman Mehmood has written the scripts for the festival plays.

He said while writing for the event he kept one thing in mind, that is, the language should be simple so that the common man could understand what the text is trying to convey.

After the press conference, journalists were shown two performances. One was a 30-minute long play called Sinbad, and the other was a dance piece in which folk music and dances of all the four provinces of the country were highlighted.

Sumatran tiger Melati killed in fight: London Zoo

tiger Melati killed in fight
An endangered Sumatran tiger has been killed by another tiger at London Zoo. Male tiger Asim was brought to the zoo from a Danish safari park 10 days ago in the hope he would be the "perfect mate" for long-term resident Melati.

After spending time apart in the tiger enclosure to get used to the new arrangement, the two were then introduced to each other earlier.

But tensions "quickly escalated", things became "more aggressive" and Melati died in a fight, the zoo said.

A statement issued by the zoo said Asim was immediately moved to a separate paddock but despite the best efforts of the vets, 10-year-old Melati died.

It said: "Our focus right now is on caring for Asim, as we get through this difficult event."

Staff are "heartbroken by this turn of events", the zoo said.

Seven-year-old Asim was moved to London Zoo as part of the European-wide conservation breeding programme.

Heralding his arrival, the zoo described him as "a handsome, confident cat who is known for being very affectionate with the ladies in his life", adding that "we're hoping he'll be the perfect mate for our beautiful Melati".

The zoo's previous male, Jae Jae - which had fathered seven cubs previously with Melati - was moved to French zoo Le Parc des Félins, on 30 January.

In 2013, Melati gave birth to two cubs but one fell into a pool and drowned.

Melati then gave birth to three cubs in February 2014 and two more in June 2016.

The Sumatran tiger, which naturally lives in the forests and jungles of Sumatra, Indonesia, is now classified as critically endangered and is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's red list of threatened animals.

According to London Zoo, the Sumatran tiger faces threats of poaching and habitat loss.

When in captivity, they can live for about 20 years.

In the 1970s, there were estimated to be 1,000 Sumatran tigers in the wild, while today's figures say there are just 300.

No NRO for Nawaz, Zardari: Railways Minister

Federal Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed
Federal Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed has reiterated that he became a member of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on the directives of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Addressing a news conference in Lahore, Rasheed said that, “I can challenge that a speaker has no authority in PAC,” said Rasheed, adding that all these measures are meant for escaping from the country.

Naqeebullah murder case: ATC declares seven policemen proclaimed offenders

Naqeebullah Mehsud extra-judicial murder case heard today in Anti-Terrorism Court
An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) heard Naqeebullah Mehsud extra-judicial murder case on Saturday.

Former SSP Rao Anwar, DSP Qamar and other accused appeared before the court in the case hearing.

The investigation officer informed the court that the process for declaring absconding accused as proclaimed offenders has been completed.

The court on the report of investigation officer A.I.G Dr Rizwan declared the absconders in the case as proclaimed offenders.

Several police officials, wanted in the murder case, have been at large.

The court declared sub inspector Amanullah Marwat, sub inspector Mohammad Shoaib alias Shoaib Shooter, ASI Gada Hussain, head constables Mohsin Abbas and Sadaqat Hussain, constables Shams Mukhtar and Rana Riaz Ahmed as proclaimed offenders.

The ATC announced to frame charges in the case in the next hearing and adjourned the case till February 19.

An inquiry report submitted in the trial court declared the murder of Mehsud and other three people in Karachi an incident of “extra judicial killing.

“All four people including Naqeebullah were killed in a room and the weapons were kept at the scene afterwards,” adding that former Senior Superintendent Police Malir, Rao Anwar and his other accomplices were present at the time of the incident.

Anwar along with other police officials had been booked for allegedly killing four men in a fake police encounter in Shah Latif Town on Jan 13.

The murder had triggered widespread outrage when the family rejected claims that Mehsud was a member of a terrorist outfit and had any criminal record.

On July 11, 2018, the ATC granted bail to Anwar against a surety bond of Rs 1 million.

However, the Supreme Court turned down a petition by Anwar, seeking removal of his name from the Exit Control List (ECL).

A bench of the apex court headed by former chief justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar had rejected the former cop’s plea.

It is pertinent to mention here that Anwar retired from police service on Jan 1 this year.

The plea, recalling that the JIT was formed on recommendation of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), said the probe report was finalized without incorporation of Zadari and Talpur’s version and it was sent to the SC.

According to the petition, the FIA failed to submit the final challan in the court owing to its failure to find any evidence in the case.
