Sahiwal ‘encounter’: Swift action to be taken in light of JIT report: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed swift action against the personnel of the Counter-Terrorism Department if found guilty by a joint investigation team formed to probe Saturday’s alleged encounter in Sahiwal that left four people dead.

In a series of tweets on Sunday, the premier expressed his shock at the incident and said the state will look after the children whose parents were shot dead by the CTD.

“Still shocked at seeing the traumatized children who saw their parents shot before their eyes. Any parent would be shocked as they would think of their own children in such a traumatic situation. These children will now be fully looked after by the state as its responsibility,” he tweeted.

The prime minister, while lauding the CTD for its fight against terrorism, asserted that everyone must be accountable before the law.

“While the CTD has done a great job in fight against terrorism, everyone must be accountable before the law. As soon as JIT report comes, swift action will be taken. The govt's priority is protection of all its citizens,” he wrote.

Four people – including a husband, wife and their teenage daughter – were killed while their minor son received bullet wounds in an alleged shootout in Sahiwal on Saturday. CTD personnel said they had killed a local commander of militant organisation Daesh and three others in the operation. Eyewitnesses, however, disputed the claim and said the people in the car did not fire at officials, nor were any explosives recovered from the vehicle.

Two monks shot dead as violence flares in Thailand's deep south

Two monks shot dead as violence flares in Thailand's deep south
Gunmen in Thailand's deep south shot dead two Buddhist monks and wounded two others inside a temple, police said on Saturday, capping a week of deadly violence as the prime minister vowed to “punish” those responsible.

Black-clad assailants carrying rifles crept into Rattanaupap temple in Narathiwat province near Malaysia's border on Friday evening and started firing, local superintendent Pakdi Preechachon told AFP.

“The attack took place around 7:30pm (1230 GMT) when an unknown number of gunmen dressed in black entered the temple through a rear area via a creek,” Pakdi said.

“Two monks were shot dead at the temple while two others were wounded.”

Since 2004 clashes between rebels and the Thai state that annexed the region a century ago have killed nearly 7,000 people, mostly civilians of both faiths.

The death toll in the south dropped to a record low last year as Thailand's junta tightened its security web but violence has boiled over in recent days, raising concerns about soft targets at schools and religious institutions.

In the past, Buddhist monks have been targeted only infrequently.

But they have been told to suspend morning alms collection starting from Saturday in three southern provinces and the southern army commander has instructed security officials to step up safeguards of Islamic leaders who could also be at risk.

Junta leader and prime minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha condemned the temple shootings.

“The prime minister denounced such a brazen attack and instructed officials to investigate and find the assailants to punish them,” said government spokesman Buddhipongse Punnakanta.

Human Rights Watch, which said in a statement that at least 23 monks had been killed since the outbreak of the insurgency in 2004, called the assault “ghastly” and a war crime because gunmen went after civilians and a place of worship.

The Sheikhul Islam Office, a national representative of Muslim communities in Thailand, denounced the violence against the monks and expressed sorrow over the incident.

“There are no religions that teach people to kill innocent people, it's the work of some group of people who want to create divisiveness,” it said in a statement on Saturday.

Pictures taken in the aftermath show monks standing next to heavily armed Thai soldiers and an alms bowl inside the temple compound with bullet holes in it.

No one has claimed responsibility, but that is not unusual for the conflict.

Last week, an imam in the same province was shot dead but it was unclear if the temple attack was related.

Friday's shooting came the same day as four security officials were wounded by two separate roadside bombs and an insurgent was shot dead in a clash near a school that sent students home for the day.

Four civil defence volunteers were also killed in a drive-by shooting outside a school on January 10 in the south's Pattani province, with security forces injuring a boy as they gunned down rebels believed to be responsible.

In a rare public statement dated January 4 the main Malay-Muslim rebel group — the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) — which has command and control over most of the insurgent foot soldiers, swore to “keep fighting”.

“Siam (Thailand) can't hold out,” the BRN wrote, signing off with a warning: “Do not help and support Siam.”

Security analyst Don Pathan said the uptick in violence was connected to efforts from Thai negotiators and Malaysian facilitators across the border to “pressure the BRN ruling council to come to the table without offering possible concessions.

1000s join rally in Turkey in solidarity with detained Kurdish lawmaker

1000s join rally in Turkey in solidarity with detained Kurdish lawmaker
Thousands of people have taken part in a rally in the main Kurdish city of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey to express solidarity with a detained lawmaker from a pro-Kurdish party who launched a hunger strike in November.

Leyla Guven, a member of the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party (HDP), is protesting against the prison conditions of Abdullah Ocalan, the head of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Guven, 55, launched a hunger strike on November 8 to pressure the Turkish government into allowing lawyers and family members to visit Ocalan.

Waving flags of the HDP, the demonstrators on Saturday flashed victory signs in support of Guven, whose condition her party describes as "life threatening" as her hunger strike entered its 66th day.

"It is our duty to add our voices to that of Leyla's," HDP's co-president Pervin Buldan told the crowd.

Guven's action was supported by more than 150 prisoners across Turkey in a show of solidarity.

She was arrested in January 2018 for her opposition to Turkey's military operation against Syrian Kurdish militants of the People's Protection Units (YPG) that are considered by Ankara an offshoot of the PKK.

Ocalan has been serving a life sentence for treason in an island prison near Istanbul since his capture in 1999.

Turkey, along with the European Union and the United States, has declared the PKK a terrorist group and banned it. The militant group has been seeking an autonomous Kurdish region since 1984.

A shaky ceasefire between the PKK and the Turkish government collapsed in July 2015. Attacks on Turkish security forces have soared ever since.

Over the past few months, Turkish ground and air forces have been carrying out operations against PKK positions in the country as well as in northern Iraq and neighboring Syria.

More than 40,000 people have been killed during the three-decade conflict between Turkey and the autonomy-seeking militant group.

Arab League chief under fire after saying Palestine less important

Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit
The Arab League chief has got himself in hot water after saying the importance of the Palestinian cause has “reduced” even as Israel is stepping up its coercive measures in the occupied territories.

“There are more pressing matters we (Arab countries) must contend with, since the Arab world has dramatically changed," Ahmed Aboul Gheit said in a recent televised interview with a local Egyptian channel.

He also stressed that the Arab region is currently going through tougher times compared to 2010.

"Arab nations have recently seen the hardest of times,” Aboul Gheit noted, citing the crises gripping Yemen, Syria and Libya.

"We must not forget the mistakes made by Arab rulers, inflicting tragedies upon the region," he said.

Several political analysts condemned Aboul Gheit's remarks as a step towards the normalization of relations between Arab countries and the Tel Aviv regime.

Israel has full diplomatic relations with only two Arab states, Egypt and Jordan, but latest reports suggest the regime is working behind the scenes to establish formal contact with Saudi Arabia and its allies.

An Egyptian political analyst, identified as Mahmoud, told The Media Line that the Arab League chief’s “statements are a clear attempt to prepare the ground for the normalization of relations with the Zionist entity."

“He (Aboul Gheit) is not very smart because the Arab street would never accept this entity in any way,” he said, emphasizing that Arab citizens have turned away from their governments on the issue.

“The majority of Arabs see Israel as a foreign body, and feel threatened by it. While politicians have their own agendas and interests with the Zionist entity, the wider Arab nation does not and rejects it,” Mahmoud pointed out.

Jordanian political commentator Moeen al-Taher said Aboul Gheit's comments implied that he is seeking to establish formal ties with Israel and soften the Arab public opinion on the matter.

Lebanese political analyst Qasem Qaseer described the Zionist entity as "the region’s core problem" and accused the Arab League of "trying to de-prioritize" the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

“He (Aboul Gheit) said he is not trying to prioritize other issues. Nevertheless, the Zionist entity is the main issue and the reason for all other problems in the region," he said.

Qaseer referred to the Arab world's outrage over US President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem al-Quds as the Israeli “capital” in December 2017.

"When the US recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital, citizens throughout the Arab world took to the streets and loudly protested against it, which shows that the ongoing conflict between the Zionist entity and the Palestinians is the most pressing issue on the agenda,” he said.

Earlier this week, it was reported that UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and National Security Adviser Tahnoun bin Zayed had paid a not-so-secret visit to Israel with a direct flight from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv.

Magnitude 6.7 quake hits Chile, no tsunami threat: USGS

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit the coast of Chile
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit the coast of north-central Chile on Saturday evening, the U.S.

Geological Survey said, and witnesses said it rattled buildings farther south in the capital city of Santiago but left only minor damage in its wake.

The quake struck at 10:32 p.m. local time (0132 GMT) about 15.6 km (9.7 miles) south-southwest of Coquimbo, the USGS said.

The quake was 53 km (33 miles) below the surface, a relatively shallow tremor that shook homes and had some worried about a possible tsunami.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, however, quickly discarded a tsunami threat following the tremor.

A Reuters witness reported minor damage to older buildings and power outages in the nearby coastal city of La Serena, a popular beach town about 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Santiago.

“It felt very strong the tourists were very nervous, but nothing serious happened,” Camila Castillo, a receptionist at a hotel in La Serena, told Reuters.

Chilean miner Antofagasta Plc said operations were normal at its Los Pelambres copper mine following the nearby earthquake.

Chile, located on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire,” has a long history of deadly quakes, including a 8.8 magnitude quake in 2010 off the south-central coast, which also triggered a tsunami that devastated coastal towns.

But death and destruction are limited by strict construction codes especially designed to withstand earthquakes.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi
Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi in a message on Saturday expressed sympathy with the families of the victims of Mexico pipeline blast.

He also wished swift recovery for all the injured in the incident.

Expressing sympathy with the Mexican government and nation over the deadly incident, he said that Islamic Republic of Iran is standing alongside the Mexican nation and government and is ready to render any help it can.

According to Reuters, At least 66 people were killed after a pipeline ruptured by suspected fuel thieves exploded in central Mexico, authorities said on Saturday, as President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador defended the army despite its failure to clear the site before the blast.

At a news conference with Lopez Obrador, Hidalgo State Governor Omar Fayad said 66 people were killed and 76 people were injured in the explosion, which happened as local residents scrambled to fill buckets and drums from a gush of fuel from the pipeline that authorities said rose up to 23 feet (7 meters) high.

Veteran leftist Lopez Obrador launched a crackdown on fuel theft on Dec. 27 and ordered pipelines to be closed temporarily to stop illegal taps draining billions of dollars from the heavily-indebted state oil firm Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex).

The upside of rising jellyfish numbers? Many animals eat them

Gelatinous creatures like these moon jellyfish (Aurelia species) serve as food for a wide variety of animals.
GELATINOUS BLOBS WITH stinging tentacles may not sound like gourmet dining, but a new review of marine life shows that many species routinely snack on ocean jellies. In fact, some may depend on the calories they contain.

Jellyfish were previously thought to be a dead end for the food web due to their low nutritional content. On top of this, research has been sounding the alarm on the explosive growth of jelly populations due to climate change, overfishing, nutrient runoff, and habitat modification.

“I think a very negative perception of jellyfish came out, like ‘Watch out: they’re going to come and eat [you],’” says Jonathan Houghton, a biologist at Queen’s University in Northern Ireland.

But a review recently published in Trends in Ecology and Evolution which Houghton co-authored pulls together research showing that jellies play a more important role than thought in the oceanic food chain. And their importance may be on the rise as other food staples like some fish and krill decline in some areas.

A taste for jelly

To gather their data, Houghton and his co-authors analyzed the footage from creature cams attached to penguins and turtles, genetic studies on stomach contents, and stable isotope analysis of animal tissues. Taken together, this evidence shows that what jellies may lack in nutritional content, they make up for in availability and ease of capture. In a way, they are like the snack food of the ocean.

Houghton always knew that some animals relied on jellies for sustenance. The leatherback turtles he studies, for example, feed almost exclusively on blobs large and small. And these turtles likely time their oceanic migrations to coincide with expansive jellyfish blooms.

But an increasing amount of research now shows that a vast number of other creatures, including penguins, albatross, and tuna may turn to jellies for sustenance.

“It’s way, way more widespread in the food web than anyone ever would have thought,” Houghton says, “from crabs, to benthic microbes, to ducks.”

Jellyfish buffet

Jellies vary widely in their size and composition. Some, like the Portuguese man-of-war, aren’t even a single individual, but rather a composite of different organisms living in symbiosis. Other jellyfish species are minuscule, providing a bite-sized snack for smaller fish and sea creatures.

While some jellies prey on the larvae and eggs of fish, Houghton says the reverse is also true. Adolescent fish sometimes hang out underneath large species like compass jellies, which provide them with a degree of protection as well as a nutritious meal of nearly pure protein from eating the jellies’ “chunky gonads,” which exist in sometimes large numbers in these jellies, and can be plucked out by the sneaky fish.

“It’s like the gingerbread house hypothesis... like a house you can eat,” Houghton says, adding that sometimes whole colonies of fish will hang out around these jellies.

“There’s an awful lot in a jellyfish to eat beyond the straightforward, clear, transparent bell that everyone thinks of,” Houghton says.

Richard Brodeur, a fisheries biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, agrees that jellies are much more important in marine food webs than they’re usually given credit for. He believes part of the reason is that jellies digest rather quickly and don’t have body parts that are easily identified in stomach contents.

Brodeur is currently working on a study examining a database of Pacific fish from the Bering Sea down the coast of California. His team found that even important fisheries species eat jellies, such as chum salmon, sablefish, and some rockfish. Plus, during times of the year when other prey species aren’t around, Brodeur says creatures like herring, anchovies, seabirds, and even some mammals may have to shift their palates towards jellies to subsist.

Changing oceans, changing diets

“There’s a good chance that having more food is going to be a good thing for turtles and other things that eat gelatinous plankton,” Brodeur says. But adding jellies to one’s diet is not without its risks. For example, leatherbacks have been found munching on plastic bags they mistook for jellies. More than half of sea turtles are estimated to have consumed plastic, and just 14 pieces of plastic can result in a turtle’s death according to one study, which may limit the recovery of these already vulnerable animals.

According to Houghton, some species of penguins are also adapting to jellies as an alternative source of food. The birds traditionally rely on krill, which live on the underside of ice sheets. But this habitat has been shrinking along with the sea ice as parts of Antarctica warm. While jellies have provided a sort of ecological buffer for penguins in the absence of enough krill, Houghton adds that a pure jelly diet isn’t necessarily going to work for all species.

“You need a specific metabolism, something like a slow leatherback,” he says. For other species, jellies are more like potato chips of the ocean, and they will definitely be impacted if their traditional food supply gets entirely replaced by jellies.

The most important takeaway, for Houghton, is emphasizing the need to expand our scientific understanding of these species. That way we can see their value as well as their limitations, rather than just viewing the jellyfish as the “gelatinous horsemen of the apocalypse.”

Yemeni snipers kill 14 Saudi troops in retaliatory attack

Now, 50% of all children in Yemen have stunted growth because they do not have enough to eat. enough to eat.
Yemeni army snipers have killed 14 Saudi troops and injured two others in retaliatory operations in the kingdom’s southwestern border region of Jizan.

Video footage released on Saturday by the military media of the Yemeni army showed the moment when the Saudi-backed militants were killed and injured in the attacks that targeted several sites of the southern border front of Jizan.

The army's sniper unit, supported by fighters from allied Popular Committees, have over the past few days inflicted heavy losses on the Saudis in the Jizan front, where four Saudi soldiers were killed on Tuesday in a sniper attack.

Saudi Arabia has been incessantly pounding Yemen since March 2015 in an attempt to crush the popular Houthi Ansarullah movement and reinstate former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who is a staunch ally of the Riyadh regime.

According to a new report by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, the Saudi-led war has so far claimed the lives of about 56,000 Yemenis.

The Saudi-led war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN has already said that a record 22.2 million Yemenis are in dire need of food, including 8.4 million threatened by severe hunger. According to the world body, Yemen is suffering from the most severe famine in more than 100 years.

A number of Western countries, the United States and Britain in particular, are also accused of being complicit in the ongoing aggression as they supply the regime in Riyadh with advanced weapons and military equipment as well as logistical and intelligence assistance.

A 7-year-old boy is making $22 million a year on YouTube reviewing toys

Ryan, now 7, of Ryan ToysReview.
The highest-earning YouTube star in the world is an elementary-school kid who makes millions reviewing toys.

Ryan, the 7-year-old "host" of Ryan ToysReview, a popular toy-review channel on YouTube, jumped from No. 8 to No. 1 on Forbes' annual list of YouTube stars who are making the most money.

A family-run YouTube channel, Ryan ToysReview generated about $22 million in pretax income from June 1, 2017, through June 1, 2018, according to Forbes, up from $11 million the year prior. The raw estimate of $22 million put Ryan ToysReview just ahead of controversial star Jake Paul (who banked $21.5 million).

In 2016, The Verge profiled the channel and Ryan's parents, who have shot and produced the account's frequently (nearly daily) released videos since Ryan ToysReview started in March 2015.

The account began when Ryan, then a 4-year-old fan of toy-review videos, asked his parents why he couldn't also review toys on YouTube.

Ryan ToysReview started out slowly until a July 2015 video went viral. The video featured Ryan opening and reviewing a box containing more than 100 toys from Pixar's "Cars" series. It has close to 935 million views.

The channel now tends to review new toys or kids' food products, and the videos usually feature earnest and enthusiastic commentary from Ryan with off-camera guidance from his parents.

Earlier this year, Ryan struck a deal with Walmart to sell a toy line called "Ryan's World" exclusively in over 2,500 US stores and Walmart's website, according to Reuters. Ryan's World was the first merchandise to be sold after Pocket.Watch, a children's media brand, negotiated licensing deals for several online video stars.

Ryan ToysReview has 17 million followers and has gotten a combined 26 billion views, according to Forbes.

5,000 prisoners of conscience in Bahraini regime’s detention, says rights group

In this file picture, Bahraini regime forces arrest a protester during a demonstration against the ruling Al Khalifah regime in the village of Shakhurah, west of Manama.
An independent human rights group says it has documented the arrest of more than 5,000 prisoners of conscience in addition to 200 victims of excessive use of force, murder and torture in the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom, as the ruling Al Khalifah regime presses ahead with its heavy clampdown on political dissidents and pro-democracy activists.

The head of the Bahrain Center for Dialogue and Tolerance, Sheikh Maytham al-Salman, said in a statement during a conference held in Lebanese capital Beirut that "human rights as well as civil and political situation in Bahrain have deteriorated."

Continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Bahrain is taking place amid silence from the international community, including the United Kingdom and the United States of America,” Salman added.

Salman then called on international diplomatic missions to investigate the trials of political and human rights activists in Bahrain, record the violence they face in prisons, and use diplomatic visits to examine the status of detainees.

Thousands of anti-regime protesters have held demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country in mid-February 2011.

They are demanding that the Al Khalifah regime relinquish power and allow a just system representing all Bahrainis to be established.

Manama has gone to great lengths to clamp down on any sign of dissent. On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were deployed to assist Bahrain in its crackdown.

Scores of people have lost their lives and hundreds of others sustained injuries or got arrested as a result of the Al Khalifah regime’s crackdown.

On March 5, 2017, Bahrain’s parliament approved the trial of civilians at military tribunals in a measure blasted by human rights campaigners as being tantamount to imposition of an undeclared martial law countrywide.

Bahraini monarch King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifah ratified the constitutional amendment on April 3, 2017.

Gaza: Four lion cubs die from cold weather day after birth

A Palestinian man checks the bodies of lion cubs that died at a zoo in the southern Gaza Strip
Four lion cubs died from the cold in a Gaza zoo after wind ripped protective plastic sheeting from their cage during a winter storm, the zoo's owner has said.

Two cubs were found dead on Thursday, just a day after they were born, said Fathy Joma. The two others were barely breathing and efforts to revive them with an electric heater and blankets failed.

Several children gathered on Friday to watch as the cubs were buried.

Joma said the 12-year Israeli-Egyptian blockade on the Gaza Strip has made it difficult to obtain the food and equipment necessary for the care of animals, Palestinian media agency Maan reported.

"We could not secure the necessary food supplements, medicines and antibiotics to save the lives of the cubs," Joma said. "We do not have enough money and the blockade is exacerbating the situation."

"These are African lions, they are not used to living in such cold weather and they really need special protection," he added.

The other animals in the private zoo in the southern Gaza Strip survived the storm, including the lioness, her mate and their three 14-month-old cubs, he said.

Most of the animals in the zoo were smuggled into Gaza from Egypt via underground tunnels a few years ago, before the Egyptian military destroyed the tunnels running beneath the border.

The wintry weather sweeping the region has made it especially hard for animals that lack proper care.

International animal care groups have carried out several evacuation missions in recent years to relocate animals and birds in poor condition to sanctuaries outside Gaza.

UK concession on customs union can unlock Brexit talks: EU

A mural by British artist Banksy, depicting a workman chipping away at one of the stars on a European Union (EU) themed flag, is pictured in Dover, south east England on January 7, 2019.
A senior European Union official has suggested that the British government can save its divorce deal with the bloc if it reverses its position on leaving the EU’s customs union after Brexit.

EU’s Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan said on Saturday that most obstacles blocking a final Brexit deal could be overcome if British Prime Minister Theresa May rolls back on a promise of leaving the EU’s customs union.

“If Mrs May rolled back on her red line of exiting the customs union, most of the outstanding obstacles to a deal would be swept away,” said Hogan, a former Irish government minister, in an opinion for the Irish Independent newspaper.

Hogan also urged the lawmakers in the British parliament, who earlier this week rejected May’s draft Brexit deal by 230 votes, to “drop the fanciful rhetoric and start speaking the plain, unvarnished truth.”

The comments come as May has shown no sign of dropping her so-called “red line” on Brexit, including her position on the customs union and a mutual mechanism for administration of the Irish border after Brexit, which is known as the backstop.

The Telegraph newspaper said Saturday that May had remained faithful to her stances while trying to convince European leaders to make changes to the backstop so that the Brexit deal could pass the British parliament.

The report said May had spoken with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Irish leader Leo Varadkar after the Brexit defeat in the parliament.

During the discussions, the report said, May repeated her demands on the backstop, saying it should become time-limited with an option for Britain to withdraw unilaterally or there should be a commitment to a trade deal finalization before 2021 to prevent the backstop from coming into force.

There was no mention, however, that May could accept EU’s pressure for a permanent UK presence in the bloc’s customs union after Brexit.

Former British prime minister John Major also urged May on Saturday to give up her red lines on Brexit or allow the lawmakers in the House of Commons to find a way to avoid a no-deal Brexit on March 29.

Major, UK Prime Minister from 1990 to 1997, said May had no option but to give up her opposition to key issues in the negotiations if she wanted to avoid a disorderly Brexit.

“If we leave in chaos and without a deal, that seems to me to be the worst of all outcomes,” Major told BBC Radio.

Dedi Purnama, 26, had been working to repair the roof tiles on the couple’s home when his wife Ilham Cahyani, 25, asked for his password.

He refused, leading to an argument during which he hit her before she poured petrol on him and set him on fire.

Purnama died two days after the incident in the East Lombok Regency of the Indonesian Province of West Nusa Tenggara. East Lombok Police Chief Made Yogi said the initial verbal argument between the couple had escalated when he climbed down from the roof and hit his wife.

Cahyani reportedly grabbed a petrol can and poured the flammable liquid over her husband before setting him aflame using a lighter.

A witness identified as Oji told reporters he had run over to the couple’s house after spotting the flames and helped put them out.

He was rushed to the Keruak Health Centre and underwent treatment for two days for the horrific burns he sustained.

Photos show large parts of the 26-year-old’s upper body severely burnt as he lies on a mattress. Purnama died after two days hospital.

Cahyani has been arrested and reportedly remains in custody at East Lombok Regional Police Station, although it is unclear if she has been charged. The investigation is ongoing.

UNHCR Calls on Cameroon to Halt Forcible Returns of Nigerian Refugees

Nigerian refugees are seen at a gathering point before being repatriated to Nigeria, in Fotokol, Cameroon, April 19, 2017.
The UN refugee agency says it is shocked by reports that Cameroonian authorities have forcibly returned some 9,000 Nigerian refugees who fled across the border earlier in the week in search of safety from militant attacks.

The sudden mass exodus of thousands of Nigerian refugees into Cameroon followed attacks by Boko Haram militants in the small border town of Rann in Nigeria's Borno State on Monday.

The militants reportedly targeted military installations, civilian and humanitarian facilities. The United Nations reports the market and shelters housing thousands of internally displaced people in Rann were burned down by the attackers. At least 14 people are reported killed.

UN refugee spokesman, Babar Baloch, tells VOA Cameroon's expulsion of the thousands of Nigerian refugees fleeing for their lives was totally unexpected and distressing.

"It is really alarming for us to see desperate people who have just arrived in Cameroon seeking safety in this remote part and then for them to be ending up back into a situation of danger is extremely worrying," said Baloch.

Baloch says the UNHCR and its partners were making preparations to provide humanitarian aid to the newly arriving refugees when they heard the refugees were being summarily expelled.

"It is unexpected because there were no indications. We were already in touch with the Cameroonian authorities in terms of how to take care of the newly arrived refugees and then we found out reports that they may have been sent back," said Baloch.

Baloch says there are concerns for the possibly precarious situation of another 6,000 Nigerian refugees who fled to Cameroon several weeks ago.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi is appealing to Cameroon to continue its open-door policy toward those seeking refuge. He is calling for an immediate halt to any more returns. He says Cameroon must ensure compliance with its obligations under national and international law to protect refugees in fear of their lives.

Mexico Pipeline Blast Death Toll Climbs to 66

Mexico Pipeline Blast Death Toll Climbs to 66
The death toll from Friday's fuel pipeline explosion in central Mexico has climbed to 66, the governor of the country's Hidalgo state said.

Governor Omar Fayad also said Saturday at a news conference in Mexico City that at least 76 others were injured.

Authorities initially said 20 people had been killed and at least 60 others were badly burned.

A leak and the resulting blast were caused by fuel thieves illegally tapping into the pipeline in Hidalgo state, officials said.

Video footage showed the fuel gushing into the air and people collecting the oil in buckets, garbage cans and other containers before the explosion.

"I urge the entire population not to be complicit in fuel theft," said Hidalgo Governor Fayad. "Apart from being illegal, it puts your life and those of your families at risk."

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who has launched a crackdown on oil theft, called on "the entire government" to assist the people at the site of the fuel explosion.

The government says fuel theft costs the country about $3 billion a year.

Russians Plunge Into Icy Waters to Mark Feast of Epiphany

Russian President Vladimir Putin crosses himself as he bathes in ice-cold water on Epiphany near St. Nilus Stolobensky Monastery on Lake Seliger, Svetlitsa village, Russia, Jan. 19, 2018.
Across Russia, the devout and the daring are observing the Orthodox Christian feast day of Epiphany by immersing themselves in frigid water through holes cut through the ice of lakes and rivers.

Epiphany celebrates the revelation of Jesus Christ as the incarnation of God through his baptism in the River Jordan.

Russian believers imitate the baptism by entering the water and ducking themselves three times either on the evening before Epiphany or on that Jan. 19 feast day. Many make the sign of the cross, some others hold their noses.

Some of the people who do it scurry out quickly and wrap themselves in large towels. But many seem unfazed by it all and extol the practice as strengthening both the soul and the body.

The ritual is watched by priests who have blessed the water. Emergency workers are also on hand in case anyone succumbs to the heart-racing shock of the icy immersion.

There's usually a contingent of warmly dressed onlookers, too, maybe wondering if they'll have the boldness to try it next year.

Some Orthodox pilgrims get to dunk themselves in the actual River Jordan, which is a whole lot warmer.

CTD personnel involved in Sahiwal encounter taken into custody on CM Buzdar’s order

CTD personnel involved in Sahiwal encounter taken into custody on CM Buzdar’s order
Following the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar all the officials of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) involved in Sahiwal encounter were arrested on Saturday.

Buzdar has also departed for Sahiwal on the directions of Prime Minister Imran Khan where he will meet the relatives of the deceased.

Four persons including two women were shot dead by the CTD officers in a purportedly high-speed pursuit in Qadirabad area of Sahiwal city.

CTD claimed that the ‘terrorists’ were killed in an intelligence based operation (IBO). Three other terrorists including Shahid Jabar and Abdul Rahman managed to flee during the chase near the toll plaza of Sahiwal.

CTD claimed of confiscating explosives and weapons from the car adding that officers were investigating into the matter as part of the operation in Faisalabad on January 16.

Contrarily, an eye witness has told the media that the deceased were neither equipped with any weapon nor resisted officers whereas three children were also present in the car.

The eyewitnesses further said that the children while speaking to them at a nearby petrol station claimed that the “police has killed their parents”. “Following the firing incident, the police left the children at the petrol station where they spoke to us. A few minutes later, however, CTD officials returned and took the children with them to an undisclosed location,” the eyewitnesses added.

Menawhile, contradictions in statements from law enforcement agencies have raised further doubts over alleged encounter by CTD personnel.

In his statement, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sahiwal has now clarified that CTD personnel did not face any retaliation from those sitting inside the car.

Thousands of Women Expected in US Capital for 3rd Annual March

Thousands of Women Expected in US Capital for 3rd Annual March
Thousands of women are gathering in cities in the United States and around the world Saturday for the third annual Women’s March to demand gender equality and call attention to environmental concerns and immigrant rights, among other issues.

The beginning

The first Women’s March was held in 2017, the day after Donald Trump was sworn in as president of the United States.

On Trump’s first full day in office, hundreds of thousands of women descended on Washington in a display of popular opposition to the new administration and its policies. Sister marches were held in more than 600 locations in the U.S. and across the globe in solidarity with the marchers in Washington.

Peter Newsham, Washington’s interim police chief at the time, said of the march in the U.S. capital, “The crowd stretches so far that there’s no room left to march.”

Many of the women wore knitted pink “pussycat” hats, featuring small catlike ears, to show their solidarity with the anti-Trump sentiments and as an oblique reference to vulgar comments Trump was known to have made years before he entered politics.

Moment to movement

In 2018, organizers of the Women’s March sought to build on the first rally by focusing on politics and the power of women voters. They held the second march in Nevada, a battleground state for the midterm elections later in the year. The rally touting the message “Power to the Polls” focused on voter registration, featuring activists and members of Congress as speakers.

As in 2017, sister marches were held in cities across the U.S. and thousands of women also marched in London, Paris, Sydney and other European and Australian cities.

In 2019, the organizers are bringing the march back to Washington. Hopes were high for this year’s turnout, especially after a record 102 women were elected to the House of Representatives in the midterms at the end of last year.

A growing controversy

Several prominent women’s and civil rights organization are absent from the list of partners published on the Women’s March website.

Among those that had partnered with the group in the past, but missing in 2019, are civil rights organization Southern Poverty Law Center and the political action committee Emily’s List. By late Tuesday, the Democratic National Committee had also withdrawn its name from the list of partners.

The controversy surrounds several Women’s March leaders who have been accused of holding racist and anti-Semitic views.

Organizers have repeatedly denied all accusations of misconduct or using inappropriate speech.

The issue resurfaced when two of the march’s organizers appeared on ABC talk show The View on Monday and refused to denounce Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who has made repeated anti-Semitic and anti-white remarks.

When asked why she had posted a photo of Farrakhan on Instagram with a caption that included the hashtag for the title “Greatest Of All Time,” Women’s March’s co-president Tamika Mallory said, “I didn’t call him the greatest of all time because of his rhetoric. I called him the greatest of all time because of what he’s done in black communities.”

Mallory’s co-president, Bob Bland, denied allegations printed in The New York Times and the Jewish magazine Tablet that members of the organization had expressed anti-Semitic beliefs at a meeting behind closed doors.

“The people that the journalist spoke to did not tell the truth, period, full stop,” Bland said. “The Women’s March unequivocally condemns anti-Semitism, bigotry, transphobia. ... We condemn any statements of hate.”

Going forward

Some marchgoers say they are not deterred.

"The controversy has certainly influenced conversations around my decision to attend or not. Though it never was going to stop me, even more so I feel it's important to attend," said Naomi Zipursky of San Francisco, who is attending the local march there Saturday.

“By not showing up, I don’t even allow the conversation to begin and only create a bigger gap.”

“The thought that I, as a Jewish woman, wouldn’t be welcome or would need to leave part of my identity at the door in order to attend the march is disheartening and frankly, alienating,” Zipursky said. “(But) I also believe that what one person may say or do doesn’t necessarily represent what an entire organization may stand for.”

A separate “March for ALL Women” is planned for Saturday in the U.S. capital, with organizers rallying those who may feel the main march is divisive and not inclusive.

Many participants don’t think the marches will ever compare to the first one.

“It’s going to be very hard to pull off the momentum of the first women’s march,” said Mary Tablante, communications officer at the Asian Americans Advancing Justice. “I am still going (this year) because I do think they are trying to improve it. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the movement.”

Despite the controversy, marches are planned in almost every U.S. state. ABC News reports some states will hold multiple marches: California plans to have more than 30 marches, New York 15, Texas, 13 and Florida 11. Michigan will host eight and Pennsylvania seven.

Marches are also planned in more than a dozen European nations, as well as in Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Israel, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia, and South Africa, among others.

People are using the viral '10-year challenge' as a stark warning about what's happening to our planet

Photo of Switzerland's Rhone Glacier in September 2018.
The new year has delivered a one-two punch of bad news about the world's oceans.

Not only did 2018 turn out to be the oceans' warmest year on record, but scientists realized that oceans are also heating up 40% faster than they'd previously thought. What's more, research has found that the Antarctic ice sheet is melting nearly six times as fast as it did in the 1980s.

So when a viral photo challenge emerged in which people on social media juxtapose pictures of themselves from 2009 and 2019, some environmentalists seized on the opportunity to highlight Earth's own "10-year challenge."

Sites like Reddit and Instagram have exploded with posts calling for greater public awareness about the effects of climate change. While the original challenge is meant to provide a visual representation of the way someone has matured or changed, the climate-change versions convey a more serious message: This is the 10-year challenge we need to focus on.

Many of the 10-year comparison photos show melting glaciers, one of the most visually dramatic effects of a warming planet.

Melting glaciers mean the North Pole and the South Pole are slowly getting makeovers (and not the good kind). In a worst-case scenario, called a "pulse," warmer water could cause the glaciers holding back Antarctica's and Greenland's ice sheets to collapse. That would send massive quantities of ice into the oceans, potentially leading to rapid sea-level rise around the world.

If a pulse were to happen, the sea level in South Florida could increase by 10 to 30 feet by 2100. But because water, like most things, expands when it warms, sea-level rise is inevitable even if the ice sheets don't melt — the oceans absorb 93% of the extra heat that greenhouse gases trap in the atmosphere.

It's one thing to talk about these threats in the abstract. But it's a different ball game when we see visual evidence.

Glaciologists think that half of Switzerland's small glaciers — and the streams they feed — will be gone within the next 25 years, according to Reuters.

This pair of images shows the retreat of Alaska's Pedersen Glacier from 1917 to 2005.

Chief Minister, Speaker Punjab fail to resolve splits
The rift between the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and its coalition partner the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) continues to intensify as Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Usman Buzdar on Saturday failed to convince Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhary Pervez Elahi over disagreements.

Reportedly, CM Buzdar met Elahi to address his grievances, however Elahi complained of matters not being resolved after a consensus was achieved amongst them.

“There has been no implementation on certain issues which were to be fixed as part of our alliance,” Elahi said in a regretful manner.

The political situation detriorated when Punjab Minister for Mines and Minerals Ammar Yasir, the lone minister of the PML-Q in the Punjab cabinet, tendered his resignation on Friday to Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Elahi, only a few days after PTI’s federal information minister Fawad Chaudhry talked about creating a forward bloc in the PML-Q.

Besides, following the meeting, Elahi revealed that his party was to be given two federal and two punjab ministries.

Responding to the speaker, Buzdar said he was not aware about the matter and it would be discussed with the Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Donald Trump, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to hold 2nd summit

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are to meet near the end of February.
United States President Donald Trump will hold a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to try to broker a deal to coax the North to give up its nuclear weapons, the White House announced.

News of a second meeting with the reclusive North Korean leader came after Trump's 90-minute meeting in the Oval Office with a North Korean envoy, Kim Yong Chol, who travelled to Washington to discuss denuclearisation talks.

Trump and Kim Jong Un are to meet near the end of February at a place to be announced later, said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

“The United States is going to continue to keep pressure and sanctions on North Korea until we see fully and verified denuclearisation,” Sanders said. “We've had very good steps and good faith from the North Koreans in releasing the hostages and other moves. And so we're going to continue those conversations and the president looks forward to the next meeting.”

In May, North Korea released three American detainees and sent them home with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo after his meeting with the North Korean leader in Pyongyang.

The second summit signals stepped-up efforts by both countries to continue talks. Trump has exchanged letters with the North Korean leader amid little tangible progress on the vague denuclearisation agreement reached at their first meeting last June in Singapore.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said “it's high time” for serious negotiations between the US and North Korea to outline a roadmap for the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula. The UN chief told a news conference at UN headquarters in New York on Friday that a roadmap would allow both sides “to know exactly what the next steps will be, and to have predictability in the way negotiations take place".

On Friday, Pompeo met with the North Korean envoy at a Washington hotel before the White House meeting, and the two had lunch together afterwards.

Trump has spoken several times of having a second summit early this year. Vietnam has been considered as a possible summit venue, along with Thailand, Hawaii and Singapore.

Since their Singapore sit-down in June, several private analysts have published reports detailing continuing North Korean development of nuclear and missile technology. A planned meeting between Pompeo and the envoy, who is North Korea's former spy chief, in New York last November was abruptly cancelled. US officials said at the time that North Korea had called off the session.

The special US envoy for North Korea negotiations, Steve Biegun, is set to travel to Sweden for further talks over the weekend.

The talks have stalled over North Korea's refusal to provide a detailed accounting of its nuclear and missile facilities that would be used by inspectors to verify any deal to dismantle them. The North also has demanded that the US end harsh economic penalties and provide security guarantees before it takes any steps beyond its initial suspension of nuclear and missile tests.

Harry Kazianis, a North Korea expert at the Center for National Interest, said any talks between the two nations are a positive development, but the hard work of negotiating an agreement has only begun.

“Both nations must now show at least some tangible benefits from their diplomatic efforts during a second summit, or risk their efforts being panned as nothing more than reality TV,” Kazianis said.

As a possible first step, Kazianis said, North Korea could agree to close its nuclear centrifuge facility at Yongbyon in exchange for some relief from US sanctions or a peace declaration ending the Korean War. The three-year war between North and South Korea ended in 1953 with an armistice, not a peace treaty.

“Such a deal allows both sides to come away with a much-needed win that can breathe new life into negotiations,” he said.

South Korea said it expects the second summit between Trump and Kim to be “a turning point in firmly establishing a permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula".

Kim expressed frustration in an annual New Year's address over the lack of progress in negotiations. But on a visit to Beijing last week, he said North Korea would pursue a second summit “to achieve results that will be welcomed by the international community”, according to China's official Xinhua News Agency.

Kim's latest trip to China, his fourth since last year, came as the North's strongest ally has encouraged negotiations with the US while at the same time arguing in favour of an immediate easing of sanctions.

The US and North Korea seemed close to war at points during 2017. The North staged a series of weapons tests that brought it closer to its nuclear goal of one day being able to target anywhere on the US mainland. The two sides then turned to insulting each other: Trump called Kim “Little Rocket Man” and North Korea said Trump was a "dotard".

Independent analysts are highly sceptical that North Korea will easily abandon a nuclear arsenal constructed in the face of deep poverty and probably seen by Kim as his only guarantee of his government's survival. But Retired Gen Vincent Brooks, former US commander of American and allied forces in South Korea, told “PBS Newshour” that he believes Kim is serious about getting rid of his nuclear weapons.

“I do. I think that the dance is going to be very important here, though, as we think about how we go from where we were to where we all want to be,” Brooks said. “First, we ought to take him (Kim) at his word. And it's not an easy thing to accept, especially given the track record of North Korea.

“But this is a new leader in North Korea ... and, indeed, there's evidence that he's serious about committing to what he said. For example, we've now gone 415 days without a strategic provocation, test or demonstration. I think that's a signal by itself that Kim Jong Un has moved in a different direction. “

AC extendes Saad brother's physical remand for 7 days
An accountability court on Saturday extended Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Saad Rafique and his brother Salman Rafique’s physical remand till January 26 in connection to the Paragon Housing scam case.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials presented the Rafique brothers before the court as their physical remand ended today.

As accountability court Judge Najmul Hassan heard the case, the NAB prosecutor requested the court that the physical remand of the PML-N leader and his brother be extended as the accountability watchdog had gained details of their bank accounts and needed time to further investigate.

Opposing NAB’s request, the counsel for the Rafique brothers said, “No headway has been made in the investigation. The brothers have nothing to do with Paragon Housing and thus their remand should not be extended.”

“There have been no irregularities in Saad Rafique’s bank account and a record of all transactions, including those pertaining to Paragon Housing, is available,” the counsel further said.

After hearing the arguments, the court reserved its judgment on NAB’s request. However, shortly after, the court accepted the accountability watchdog’s request and granted a seven-day extension in the physical remand of the Rafique brothers.

The court ordered that the PML-N leader and his brother be presented before court on January 26.
