PTI demands Bilawal apologise for using 'insulting words' for NA speaker

Bilawal Bhutto
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers on Saturday submitted a resolution in the lower house against PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, demanding that the opposition leader apologise for his remarks criticising the National Assembly speaker.

The resolution, which bore the signatures of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, Human Rights Minsiter Shireen Mazari as well as Asad Umar and Shafqat Mehmood, stated that Bilawal had used "insulting words" for Speaker Asad Qaiser.

Bilawal, in a press talk after the budget bill was passed by the National Assembly yesterday, had accused the speaker of "running the House in a partisan manner". He had gone on to call the speaker a "worker (naukar) of the government" and criticised him for not issuing the production orders of MNAs Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir, who are currently under detention.

"Such a personalised attack on the speaker, the Custodian of the House, is an attack on the House and totally unacceptable," the resolution read. "We demand an apology on the floor of the House."

In response to the resolution against his remarks, Bilawal said: "Benazir [Bhutto] taught me to speak the truth and I will speak the truth."

"I have a lot of respect for the speaker," he said in a media talk today.

"I wrote a letter to the speaker as the chairman of the human rights committee and received a receipt saying that my letter has been received with a stamp from the National Assembly. What are you going to call him when the speaker says on national TV that he did not receive any letter?"

Bilawal had earlier said that he sent multiple letters to the speaker urging him to issue production orders of Dawar and Wazir. So far, the speaker has not issued the production orders on the advice of the law ministry.

The PPP chairperson further said that the budget had been passed without proper voting.

"How can you take such a big decision based on a voice vote?" he asked.

"Their [the government's] biggest problem is that [I] called them liars and selected. They are not bothered by the economic murder of the masses," he complained.

Money laundering main reason behind economic crisis, PM Khan

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday said that money laundering and corruption were the biggest reasons for the economic crisis faced by Pakistan.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, speaking on the floor of the National Assembly after the passage of the federal budget and the Finance Bill 2019-20, said that the Pakistani rupee has depreciated because the incumbent government inherited the largest national debt in Pakistan's history.

"The biggest reason for the fall of the Pakistani rupee is money laundering. Money was sent abroad through illicit channels because if those in power send their money outside Pakistan they will not be able to stop others," he said on the floor of the assembly.

He said that Pakistanis had $10billion stashed outside of the country.

"Things are being revealed after investigations into the Zardari group, Omni group, and fake bank accounts. Money was stolen from Pakistan and sent abroad," he said, lashing out at the leaders of the opposition parties Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

He said that, after what had been revealed following the investigation into the opposition leader's family, he had no right to speak on the depreciation of the Pakistani rupee.

"These people are ones responsible themselves. Those who are accused of looting from the people of this country, how can they come and deliver speeches on the floor of this assembly?" he remarked.

"Those accused of billions in corruption become part of the Public Accounts Committee. Can you imagine how we have torn our parliament and democracy into pieces?"

The prime minister lauded members of the government and its allies for participation in and approving the budget by majority. He especially praised the speech by Minister Murad Saeed on the floor as well as the work of Minister of State for Revenue Hammad Azhar, saying that he deserves being promoted to federal minister.

The prime minister criticised the opposition again, and in an apparent jibe at Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Fazlur Rehman, slammed the "12th man of politics who goes around gathering people to topple the government every other day".

"Can you believe that you leave behind historic debt and ask others what they did instead? All international ratings agencies look at just one thing: Is the current account in deficit?" he said. "Those who have left us in debt are blaming us. And then they try to mimic Nelson Mandela's voice and ask the why rupee is falling."

He said that the incumbent government's biggest challenge was to balance the current account. "We have managed to reduce the current account deficit by 30 percent."

Speaking further on the economic measures being by the government, Prime Minister Imran Khan promised that there would be "a complete crackdown on money laundering".

"Any kind of previous loopholes on money laundering will be closed. We are supporting overseas Pakistanis and our remittances are increasing. We are focusing on investment to bring in to Pakistan," he said, adding that different housing schemes by would be launched soon the government which would positively impact 40 directly-related industries.

"We are trying our best that the burden of these difficult times is borne by those who can bear it...those who have the money and the capability. We are trying our best that the least privileged sector gets the least burden," he said.

"We have given Rs217bn subsidy in electricity so 75 percent of consumers are not burdened. We are giving Rs5bn micro-credit for housing, which will Inshallah keep increasing.

"Another sector which we will continue to encourage will be the agriculture sector. We will bring a detailed plan for farmers. We have signed memoranda of understanding with the Chinese in CPEC for transfer of technology to improve livestock and yield," he said.

Pakistan rejects US religious report, calls it ‘biased’

Foreign Office of Pakistan
Pakistan on Friday rejected a report by the US State Department on International Religious Freedom, calling it a “compendium of unsubstantiated and biased assertions.”

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office, “The report's segment on Pakistan is a compendium of unsubstantiated and biased assertions. As a matter of principle, Pakistan does not support such national reports making observations on the internal affairs of sovereign States. Pakistan, therefore, rejects these observations.”

“Pakistan is a multi-religious, multi-cultural and pluralistic society where people of different faiths are living together. Their contributions to society add to its richness and diversity. Their rights are guaranteed under the Constitution of Pakistan. These constitutional guarantees are underwritten by a vigilant judiciary that has demonstrated resolve to protect the fundamental rights — including religious freedoms — in recent high profile cases,” the FO added.

The foreign office further said Pakistan is implementing a comprehensive “National Action Plan on Human Rights” which focuses on, policy and legal reforms, access to justice, implement key human rights priorities, implementation of international and UN treaties and the implementation and monitoring mechanism for the Action Plan.

“The funds to the tune of PKR 750 Million have been allocated for implementation of the Plan,” the statement said.

The statement further said, Pakistan has always played a positive role and engaged the international community including the US. “With a view to have better and mutual understanding of the issue of religious freedoms, which are under stress around the world. Pakistan is of the view that all countries are obliged to promote religious harmony and have a duty to protect their citizens in accordance with national laws and international norms,” the statement said.

The statement added that a glaring discriminatory aspect of the report is that it has ignored the systematic persecution of minorities, particularly Muslims, in India, and especially Indian occupied Kashmir where they are subjected to alien domination and foreign occupation.

“Pakistan has often raised its own concerns internationally including with the Western governments and the US over the growing trend of Islamophobia in their own countries. At the United Nations, OIC and other platforms, Pakistan will continue to be part of global efforts to combat religious intolerance, discrimination based on religion and belief and Islamophobia,” the foreign office added.

Afghanistan's warm-up win holds no relevance: Haris Sohail

Batsman of Pakistan Cricket team Haris Sohail
Left-hand batsman stressed that the Men in Green are not taking Afghanistan lightly.

Swashbuckling batsman Haris Sohail has stressed that Pakistan’s defeat to Afghanistan in the World Cup warm-up game will have no bearing on the result of World Cup’s match between the Men in Green and Naib-led side on Saturday in Headlingly.

While speaking in a pre-match press conference, Sohail said that Pakistan team are prepared to take on Afghanistan and are not taking them lightly.

"They did beat us in a warm-up game but that was a practice game and this match will be a different one, but we need to come at full power to beat them," said Sohail.

"Afghanistan's progress at international level is very good — they have quality spinners so there is no way we could take them lightly."

Sohail, whose return to form has helped revive Pakistan's World Cup hopes, said he bore no grudges after being unceremoniously dropped earlier in the tournament.

The 30-year-old left-hander has come back strongly, posting scores of 89 and 68 in victories against South Africa and New Zealand to keep alive his side's hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

Sohail, dropped after scoring just eight when the West Indies shot Pakistan out for a paltry 105 at Nottingham, said he had accepted the decision.

"As a sportsman I believe that whatever is best for the team should happen," Sohail said on Friday. "I was confident that whenever I will get a chance I will give 100 percent."

The batsman said his partnership with century-maker Babar Azam was crucial in the win over New Zealand, who had been unbeaten coming into the match.

"We, Babar and I, are given a role and that is to build partnerships and in both the games I had good stands with Babar and I am sure that will continue," said Sohail.

The Babar-Sohail stand for the fourth wicket yielded 81 in Pakistan's impressive total of 308-7 against South Africa, while they added a match-winning 126 against New Zealand.

Pakistan's last league match will be against Bangladesh at Lord's on July 5.

They need to win both of their remaining games and hope other results go their way to reach the semi-finals.

It would be 'monumental' if US can reach deal with China: Trump

Donald Trump says it would be 'monumental' if US can reach deal with China
US President Donald Trump said Saturday he was ready for a "historic" deal with China as he kicked off a hotly awaited meeting with China's Xi Jinping, with the world watching to see if they can strike a deal over their long-running trade war.

After a first day dominated by public shows of bonhomie, all eyes at the G20 turned to a pivotal showdown between the two rivals that has huge implications for the global economy.

The meeting kicked off in a positive tone, with Trump saying: "It would be historic if we could do a fair trade deal... We are totally open to it."

For his part, Xi said that "dialogue" was better than confrontation after both sides had slapped tit-for-tat tariffs on each other's goods.

Even before Donald Trump sat down with his Chinese counterpart, the US president grabbed the headlines with a surprise tweet inviting Kim Jong Un to meet for a handshake at the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea.

Trump has said he expects a "productive" meeting but has also warned he is prepared to slap tariffs on all Chinese imports if no deal can be struck on the sidelines of the G20.

Trump had earlier confirmed that the leaders would discuss Chinese telecoms firm Huawei, which Washington has banned over security concerns. Beijing reportedly wants the restrictions lifted as part of any trade truce.

Experts believe the most that will be agreed is a truce and a pledge to keep talking, although markets are not ruling out a complete collapse or a surprise breakthrough given the US president's mercurial nature.

The first tete-a-tete between the leaders of the world's top two economies since the last G20 in December has cast a long shadow over this year's gathering in Osaka, where differences over climate change have also been laid bare.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency said the meeting was a "unique opportunity for the two sides to find new common ground in easing trade tensions and bring the troubled ties back onto the right track".

However, the commentary also warned the US "needs to place itself on an equal footing with China" and "accommodate China's legitimate concerns".

Economists say that a lengthy trade war could be crippling for the global economy at a time when headwinds including increased geopolitical tensions and Brexit are blowing hard.

On Friday, the European Union and the South American trade bloc Mercosur sealed a blockbuster trade deal after 20 years of talks, with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker hailing it as a "strong message" in support of "rules-based trade."

Heatwave

Trade is far from the only contentious issue on the table, with climate change proving another major sticking point.

Japan is seeking consensus between EU leaders who want strong action and an American administration committed to withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement.

But diplomatic sources said Washington was trying to win countries over to its side and Japanese officials acknowledged they faced a diplomatic uphill battle.

By Saturday morning, almost no language on climate change had been agreed and doubts lingered over whether a final statement would even see the light of day.

A diplomatic source said it had been a "difficult" night, with the American negotiator pushing a "very tough position" and a group including France standing united against watering down the climate language in the final statement.

Trump has dominated the headlines from the summit, and once again caught observers by surprise by tweeting early Saturday that he was open to meeting Kim while in South Korea this weekend.

"If Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!," he wrote.

Several experts, however, said the focus on Trump and the talks with China struck at the heart of the G20 format, created to craft a united global response to the Lehman Brothers crisis.

"With much of the fate of the global economy and the likely direction of markets hanging on the outcome of this pivotal Trump-Xi meeting, we think things will get worse before they get better," said ING Economics.

And the focus on bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit once again sparked doubts about the future of the gathering, experts said.

"The G20 was created as a forum for cooperation and the question may well be 'have we reached the point where it can no longer serve that purpose'," Thomas Bernes from the Centre for International Governance Innovation told AFP.

World Cup 2019: Sri Lanka given a target of 203 to South Africa

srilanka vs south africa
Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 203 in their group match against South Africa on Friday and face an uphill task to secure a win that would lift them level on points with England.

Sri Lanka´s victory against the tournament hosts last week revived their hopes of reaching the semi-finals after a miserable start to the competition.

With Pakistan and Bangladesh also pushing hard, Sri Lanka, just two points behind fourth-placed England, know a win against the already eliminated Proteas at Chester-le-Street is vital.

But the 1996 winners, put in to bat, were all out in the 50th over in the northeast of England after losing wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings.

Recalled seamer Dwaine Pretorius was the pick of the South African bowlers, taking 3-25 in his 10 overs while Chris Morris also finished with three wickets.

"It was a tough wicket," said Pretorius. "We just had to be disciplined and luckily that plays into my game plan.

"I think everyone backed each other well and that was probably our most disciplined performance of the tournament so far.

"The wicket looks slightly slow with a big outfield. Good cricket shots, good partnerships and running hard will be key."

Sri Lanka had a disastrous start to their innings when captain Dimuth Karunaratne was caught at slip by South Africa captain Faf du Plessis off the first ball of the match, delivered by paceman Kagiso Rabada.

Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando batted positively to take the score to 67 for one in the 10th over before Fernando (30) mistimed a shot, sending the ball steepling into the air before it was taken by Du Plessis.

Perera (30) was next to go, chopping a Pretorius delivery onto his stumps as Sri Lanka slipped to 72-3 in the 12th over.

Angelo Mathews was bowled by Morris for 11 and Kusal Mendis departed for 23.

Every recognised batsman apart from Karunaratne reached double-figures but none went on to play big innings.

A swarm of bees briefly interrupted play towards the end of the innings, forcing the players and umpires to lie flat on the ground.

South Africa are playing for pride after a disappointing tournament in which they have won just one of seven matches so far, against Afghanistan.

Haris says Pakistan cannot be complacent against Afghanistan

Haris Sohail
Pakistan’s middle-order batsman Haris Sohail said that Pakistan cannot be complacent in their World Cup match against Afghanistan on Saturday.

Sohail spoke to media at Headingley after the team’s practice session and said that players are aware of the fact that Afghanistan can be a dangerous side.

“Their spinners are very good and we know that. We have seen their videos and have planned accordingly to tackle them,” Sohail told media. The 30-year old batsman scored two consecutive half-centuries to help Pakistan win against South Africa and New Zealand and stay alive in contention.

Many feel that Haris Sohail is a different player from what he was before but Sohail says that there’s nothing changed in his natural style.

“I am playing according to the situation. The situation now is different from what situation was in the past. My role is to play at 4th or 5th position and bat according to requirement,” he said.

“I never play to secure my personal place, my only aim is to play for the team’s benefit. Even when I was dropped earlier, I thought it is in best of the team’s interest,” he added.

When asked, Haris said that he can’t be compared with likes of Misbah ul Haq, Younis Khan or Mohammad Yousuf.

The middle-order batsman further added that the team is going match by match and focused on their game only.

“We are not bothered about ifs and buts and other scenarios, our focus is on our game and we are looking forward to playing against Afghanistan first and then against Bangladesh,” he concluded.

Joint opposition to decide its candidate for next Chairman Senate: Kaira

Leader of Pakistan Peoples Party Qamar Zaman Kaira
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Qamar Zaman Kaira on Friday said that the opposition has agreed to remove the incumbent Chairman of the Senate.

The opposition’s committee will decide its joint candidate for the top office of the senate with consensus, talking to media here, Kaira said.

“The People’s Party had supported the existing chairman Senate but now the circumstances have changed,” the PPP senior leader said.

He said the stances change in the politics with changing realities and it is part of the democratic process.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Talal Chaudhry has also indicated the opposition parties intention with regard to the change in the senate.

“Senate chairman is a symbol of selection and we want to honour the vote instead of selection,” Talal Chaudhry said in a statement.

According to a media report, the joint committee of the opposition parties will likely to pass a resolution advising Senate chairman Sadiq Sanjrani to tender his resignation to avoid a no-confidence move against him in the house.

If the chairman would not resign after the resolution then the opposition parties would move a no-confidence motion against him, opposition sources said.

Sanjrani had recently held a meeting with former president Asif Ali Zardari and reportedly sought his support to avoid the no-confidence motion against him.

He was elected Senate Chairman in March previous year with the support of the PPP, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and a group of independent senators from Balochistan.

It is pertinent to mention here that the opposition parties in a recently held multi-party conference had decided to remove Sadiq Sanjrani as chairman of the senate.

‘Short war’ with Iran an illusion, beginner of war will not end it: Zarif

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says the US mistakenly thinks a potential war with Iran will be a short one, rejecting the speculation as an “illusion” and a “misconception,” and adding that the beginner of such war would not be necessarily the party that ends it.

Zarif made the remarks in a tweet on Thursday, in reaction to US President Donald Trump’s claim that any conflict between the two countries would not last very long.

“Misconceptions endanger peace @realDonaldTrump:” he said, adding, “Short war’ with Iran is an illusion.”

“Whoever begins war will not be the one ending it,” he further said, contesting the US confidence in its ability to control how such a confrontation could proceed.

Speaking to Fox Business on Wednesday about the quality of a hypothetical American war against Iran, Trump had alleged, "I'm not talking boots on the ground. I'm just saying if something would happen, it wouldn't last very long."

Zarif also pointed to a tweet posted by Trump on Tuesday, in which he had said the Islamic Republic would be met with “obliteration” if it ever attacked “anything American.”

The top Iranian diplomat pointed to the implications of such a threat, saying that the US president's menace amounted to genocide. "Obliteration"=genocide=war crime,” he wrote in his tweet.

Zarif had told CNN earlier that the US was “incapable” of acting on such threats, that Trump was “certainly wrong” in making the claim, and that Washington was not in any position to “obliterate” Iran, unless it resorted to using “prohibited weapons.”

In another part of his tweet, Iran's top diplomat noted that despite US claims that it is imposing sanctions on Iran as an alternative to war, those sanctions actually amount to a full-fledged economic war against the Islamic Republic.

“Sanctions aren't alternative to war; they ARE war,” Zarif said.

He finally reiterated an assertion repeatedly made by Iranian authorities, including himself, that Washington cannot expect dialogue as a foreseeable outcome if it was holding on to its pressures and threats against the country.

“Negotiations and threats are mutually exclusive,” he tweeted.

Trump’s administration has been leading a signature policy of “maximum pressure” vis-à-vis Iran. The approach has seen Washington returning its sanctions on the Islamic Republic, ramping up its warlike rhetoric while engaging in dangerous regional military buildup.

Photo of drowned migrants a failure to tackle desperation: UN

The bodies of Salvadorian migrant Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez and his daughter Valeria are seen after they drowned in the Rio Bravo river.
A photo of a man and his young daughter who drowned on the US-Mexico border symbolizes the failure to deal with their desperation, the UN refugee agency said on Wednesday.

“UNHCR, the U.N. Refugee Agency, is deeply shocked to see the heart-breaking photo of the drowned bodies of Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez and his 23-month-old daughter Valeria from El Salvador washed up on the banks of the Rio Grande,” it said in a statement.

The photo, widely shared on social media, shows the pair face down in the reeds by the river bank. He had apparently stretched his T-shirt over her to form a makeshift baby sling, and their heads are nestled together. Her red shorts bulge with a water-logged diaper.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, said they had risked their lives because they could not get the protection they were entitled to under international law.

“The deaths of Oscar and Valeria represent a failure to address the violence and desperation pushing people to take journeys of danger for the prospect of a life in safety and dignity,” he said in the statement.

UNHCR compared it with the iconic photograph of a Syrian refugee toddler, Alan Kurdi, washed up on the shores of the Mediterranean in 2015.

Kurdi was part of a Syrian refugee wave that caused panic in Europe, prompting Turkey to effectively shut down the migrant route through Greece at the European Union’s behest.

Since then, many countries have erected barriers to migrants and some, like the European Union and the US, have pressured their neighbours to cut the numbers of people trying to make the journey.

US President Donald Trump threatened Mexico with trade tariffs until it agreed to help cut migrant numbers, amid a surge that has overwhelmed US border facilities, with immigration lawyers citing children being held for weeks without adequate food or hygiene.

The US Customs and Border Protection agency said Tuesday its acting commissioner was resigning, as House Democrats passed a $4.5-billion funding package for programs that house, feed, transport and oversee Central American families seeking asylum.

Migration experts say tightening controls simply drives migration underground and squeezes it into new routes.

Tunisia president in 'critical condition', double suicide attacks rock capital

Tunisia president in 'critical condition', double suicide attacks rock capital
Double suicide attacks shook Tunisia's capital Thursday, even as the country was plunged into uncertainty with the hospitalisation of President Beji Caid Essebsi who was said to be in "critical condition".

The violence revived fears for the stability of the North African state, which is seen as a rare democratic success story of the Arab Spring uprisings but has been hit by repeated extremist attacks.

Thursday's blasts — one on a central avenue and another against a security base — killed a police officer and wounded at least eight people including several civilians, the interior ministry said.

An AFP correspondent saw body parts strewn in the road around a police car after the first attack, which took place on Habib Bourguiba, a central avenue near the old city.

The interior ministry said one police officer died from his wounds after that blast, while another policeman and three civilians were wounded.

"It was a suicide attack," interior ministry spokesperson Sofiene Zaag told AFP.

Half an hour later, the second attack targeted a base of the national guard, judicial police, and the anti-terror branch in the capital.

"An individual blew himself up outside the back door" of the base, wounding four security personnel, Zaag said, adding that both bombers were men.

Just hours after news of the attacks broke, the presidency announced that Essebsi "was taken seriously ill and transferred to the military hospital in Tunis".

Key adviser Firas Guefrech described the 92-year-old leader as in "critical condition" and, in a later tweet, said that Essebsi was "stable", urging supporters to pray for his recovery.

Essebsi, the country's first democratically-elected president, came to power in 2014, three years after the Arab Spring uprising toppled longtime dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and sparked revolts in several Arab nations.

No immediate claim

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks.

Civil protection units and police rapidly deployed to Habib Bourguiba avenue where the interior ministry is located.

Some passersby fainted while others fled in panic as shops and offices were closed by the police. Others crowded around the scene of the attack, expressing anger at the authorities.

"It is a cowardly terrorist operation... (to) destabilise Tunisians, the economy and democratic transition," Prime Minister Youssef Chahed told reporters, noting that it happened as the tourist season was in full swing.

"These (terrorist) groups don't belong in Tunisia and our war against them is... a question of life or death," Chahed added.

Sofiene Sliti, the spokesperson for the anti-terror prosecutors, said the suicide bombers wore explosive vests. The twin attacks also came ahead of presidential and legislative elections, scheduled for October and November.

In April, Essebsi said he did not plan to stand for re-election in order to make way for someone younger.

The veteran politician served as an adviser to Habib Bourguiba, the father of Tunisia's independence from France, holding a number of key jobs under him and later under Ben Ali.

Tunisia, the cradle of the Arab Spring uprisings, has been hit by repeated extremist attacks since the 2011 overthrow of Ben Ali.

On October 29, 2018, an unemployed graduate blew herself up near police cars on Habib Bourguiba avenue, killing herself and wounding 26 people, mostly police officers, according to the interior ministry.

The Tunisian authorities said she had sworn allegiance to Daesh.

That attack was the first to rock the Tunisian capital for over three and a half years.

In March 2015, extremist gunmen killed 21 tourists and a police officer at the National Bardo Museum in Tunis.

In June that year, 30 Britons were among 38 foreign holidaymakers killed in a gun and grenade attack on a beach resort near the Tunisian city of Sousse.

And in November 2015, a suicide bombing against a bus carrying presidential guards killed 12, in an attack claimed by Daesh.

PM Khan hints at extension in June 30 deadline for Asset Declaration Scheme

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday hinted at an extension in the Asset Declaration Scheme in order to avoid inconvenience caused to citizens by the June 30 deadline.

The prime minister made the remark while interacting with members of the business community on a special PTV News telethon via video link..

Tycoon Aqeel Karim Dedhi asked the premier whether he would consider an extension in the deadline. "I think the number of people interested in the scheme could be much larger if there was some clarification on what the purpose of this is, whether people have to deposit cash by June 30, whether this deadline can be extended by a couple of months. For instance, if you could register first and make the 4 per cent penalty payment, but deposit cash in the bank later?"

Prime Minister Khan noted that although it appeared that leaving things until the last minute was a Pakistani trait, he was "considering it, because there's a lot of pressure, and lots of people are saying that there is too little time left to register".

He said he was "discussing with [Federal Board of Revenue Chairman] Shabbar Zaidi and [Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance] Abdul Hafeez Shaikh what process we can adopt that somehow makes it easier for people, so they can register and then after June 30, take advantage of [the scheme]. In the next 48 hours, we will bring a programme," he said.

Dedhi also touched upon the issue of problems in the tax machinery, which the premier conceded were absolutely correct. "If I'm the head of the government, I can appoint my man as the FBR chairman and get away with tax theft," the prime minister said, explaining how corruption spreads through the tax machinery.

"If I do it, then my ministers will also do it, so will the opposition. When the ruling elite start evading taxes, it travels right to the lowest tier," he said.

"We have to reform FBR, and I have taken responsibility for this," he asserted. "Shabbar Zaidi has brought in an external expert. Once the budget is passed, I will sit with him for FBR reforms.

"It's become an issue of survival of the country now. If we don't have tax revenue, we don't have money to run the country," he explained.

He went on to say that he would also sit with experts to formulate a mechanism that promises refunds to exporters.

"They [previous governments] have gotten us stuck in a debt trap. We will get out of it through wealth creation. We need to give the business community an opportunity to make money. That will cause our economy to start moving, and our people will have more jobs, factories will start being set up, it will lead to wealth generation and increase tax revenue, and we will also be able to return our loans," the prime minister said.

"After the 60s, our government will be the first business-friendly government which promotes industry, and that will try fully to create opportunities for investment," he said.

The biggest component of the reforms, the prime minister said, was to introduce e-governance and introduce technology into the process in order to streamline it "so that taxpayers don't need to interact in-person, they can do everything online".

"I guarantee you that we will be introducing tax reforms."

"People used to be scared about filing taxes ─ and rightly so, because there was corruption in our institutions," he said.

"I will be overlooking [this effort] because I need to gather Rs5.5 billion from the country and I won't be able to do it unless people pay taxes. In this budget, we are trying our hardest to uplift industry, the business community and exports, while also trying to end poverty."

"The debts they had taken before, we have to spend half our tax revenue just on interest payments on that," he said. "You cannot run a country on the remaining money, that's why I'm taking these steps."

"I guarantee them today, that if they become a part of the Asset Declaration Scheme and come into the tax net and become a filer ─ being a non-filer is illegal ─ no government institution will bother them."

The prime minister said it was completely unacceptable that only a small percentage of taxpayers were carrying the burden of the entire population.

"It is impossible. We need to start changing our mindset," he said, with regards to paying taxes.

"Nothing is impossible. This is my life's philosophy. And if the nation is resolved, it will not be impossible," he said. Prime Minister Khan agreed that it is "a difficult time, but it was always going to be a difficult time."

"We will come out of it stronger with amendments in our system that will elevate us."

Amnesty scheme

The government's tax amnesty scheme is aimed at whitening of undisclosed expenditures, sales and assets, including foreign assets, at nominal tax rates. It was approved by the cabinet after much deliberation and was announced earlier this month by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.

The scheme had come into effect through a presidential ordinance, which offered a period of 45 days to people for declaration of their undeclared assets, expenditures, and sales along with payment of taxes until June 30 this year.

The scheme has five main pillars — scope, default surcharge, exclusions, tax rates and conditions. It can be availed by all companies, associations of persons and individuals only to whiten their assets, expenditures and sales not declared until June 30, 2018. There is no provision for whitening undeclared incomes, either domestic and foreign.

Under the scheme, assets within the country and abroad (except for real estate) can be whitened after paying a rate of four per cent. The whitened cash assets will have to be kept in Pakistani bank accounts.

For people wanting to keep their whitened money abroad, a rate of 6pc will be charged.

For the declaration of real estate, its value will be considered 1.5 times more than the FBR-assigned value to bring it at par with the market rate, Dr Shaikh had said.

The amnesty scheme also has the facility for citizens to whiten their benami accounts and properties before the Benami Transaction (Prohibition) Act, 2017, is enforced.

The scheme was announced two days after the government reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund about a $6bn bailout to implement an “ambitious structural reform agenda” over a period of 39 months.

In a video message on May 30, the prime minister had said that the scheme was a "chance for [the people] to declare their benami properties and bank accounts" so they can become a part of the tax net.

He revealed that only 1 per cent of the population pays taxes. "1pc Pakistanis are bearing the burden of 220 million people. This is impossible," he said. "No country can serve its people if the citizens don't pay taxes."

West Indies World Cup journey comes to an end after thrashing by India

West Indies World Cup journey comes to an end after thrashing by India
West Indies' World Cup dream came to an end on Thursday after India defeated them by 125 runs at Old Trafford.

They were chasing a modest target of 269 runs set by India.

Medium-fast bowler Mohammed Shami picked three wickets in today's match, including the crucial one of Windies opener Chris Gayle and those of Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran.

Jasprit Bumrah, who bagged two wickets, starred once again, giving away just nine runs in his six-over spell. Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal picked one wicket each.

The Windies stood at 80-3 after the lapse of 20 overs.

Soon after Galye and Hope's dismissal by Shami, Sunil Ambris walked back to the pavilion as well after Pandya's ball struck on his pads.

India innings
Indian skipper Virat Kohli scored his fourth successive half-century at the World Cup to lay the foundations for India's 268 for seven against West Indies.

Kohli made 72 as he became the fastest batsman to reach 20,000 international runs in his 417th innings — India's Sachin Tendulkar and Caribbean batsman Brian Lara both required 453 international innings to reach the landmark.

Wicketkeeper-batsman M.S Dhoni and Hardik Pandya boosted the total, putting on 70 runs for the sixth wicket to punish the otherwise-disciplined bowlers in the last 10 overs.

Pandya hit 46 off 38 balls while Dhoni remained unbeaten on 56, ending the innings with a big six.

The West Indies bowlers, led by paceman Kemar Roach, had kept India in check until the latter stages, stemming the flow of runs with regular wickets after being asked to field.

Roach returned impressive figures of 3-36 in his 10 overs, including the wicket of Indian opener Rohit Sharma for 18.

West Indies captain Jason Holder and fellow quick Sheldon Cottrell took two wickets each.

Kohli, whose 82-ball knock included eight boundaries, extended his fine run of form with some eye-catching shots that charmed a partisan crowd at Old Trafford.

He played a delightful wristy flick for a boundary off Holder, only to give a simple catch to midwicket off the next ball.

Kohli, who registered his 53rd ODI fifty in his 232nd ODI match, built crucial partnerships including a 69-run second wicket stand with KL Rahul, who made 48.

Earlier, Roach struck in the sixth over to have Sharma controversially caught behind off a delivery that pitched on a good length and jagged back sharply into the right-handed batsman.

The on-field umpire gave Sharma not out but the West Indies successfully reviewed the decision, with technology appearing to indicate a spike in sound as the ball squeezed through the gap between bat and pad.

Sharma was surprised and disappointed as he walked back to the dressing room.

Roach came roaring in during his second spell to have Vijay Shankar caught behind for 14 and then sent back Kedar Jadhav with a delivery that pitched and straightened.

Jadhav was given not out but the West Indies successfully reviewed.

But Dhoni, who survived a missed stumping chance on seven off Fabian Allen, and Pandya combined to give India impetus in the closing stages.

Kohli earlier won the toss and decided to bat against West Indies in the crucial fixture, ESPN Cricinfo reported.

West Indies lost their last four matches at the tournament, their longest streak ever at a World Cup tournament. Two of those defeats have been at Old Trafford, where the team batting first has won each time.

India captain Virat Kohli after winning the toss said, "We have two wrist-spinners, and hopefully a few rough patches for them to exploit. I think shot-selection and bit more application when they are set [for the team]. Same team."

West Indies skipper Jason Holder said, "We would have liked to have batted too, but if the pitch will do anything, it will probably be first up. Two changes for us: Sunil Ambris and Fabian Allen are in, for Ashley Nurse and Evin Lewis"

Teams

India: Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli (captain),Vijay Shankar, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Mohammad Shami, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah

West Indies: Chris Gayle, Sunil Ambris, Shai Hope (wk), Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder (captain), Carlos Brathwaite, Fabian Allen, Kemar Roach, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas

Sarfaraz reveals what set Babar's winning innings apart

Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed and Babar Azam
Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed, in post-victory musings on Thursday, heaped praise on his teammates for not losing hope and delivering their very best on the field against New Zealand, especially admiring Babar Azam's innings which he said were second to none in his memory.

"I don’t remember seeing a better innings in chase than the one Babar played against New Zealand. I dare say Babar is one of the best players of this generation," he wrote in a blog for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

"He is a class apart. He is technically very correct and it's tough to get him out once he gets going. He looked in total command against a strong New Zealand bowling attack," he continued, before adding: "One of the best things about Babar’s innings was how much he valued his wicket and hardly played a risky shot."

The skipper was careful, however, to not leave Haris Sohail out among the players mentioned. He lauded the "highly mature" way the middle-order batsman had played against New Zealand the day before.

"For the second successive time, Haris batted sensibly and solidly. He took the attack to the New Zealand bowlers," he said.

Sarfaraz reminded readers that Haris's performance came despite batting on a challenging wicket.

"It should be kept in mind his clean stroke-play doesn’t mean it was a batting-friendly wicket. Contrary to this, it was an extremely difficult pitch to bat on as shown by Mitchell Santner."

The captain also praised Shaheen Shah Afridi's "outstanding" performance, saying it would be unfair not to mention him.

Speaking about the young bowler's gameplay at the beginning of the tournament, the skipper said: "He had struggled in the earlier matches, but hard work in the training sessions, backed up by a good temperament, helped him to regain his wicket-taking abilities."

"Once he starts taking wickets, we all know he can be lethal and that’s precisely what he showed on Wednesday finishing with figures of 10-3-28-3. At just 19 years of age, I have no doubts this lad will contribute regularly and consistently in Pakistan’s future successes across all three formats," said Sarfaraz.

He also acknowledged that the support shown in the last two matches by the roaring fans in the stands bolstered the team's resolve.

"The most valuable and priceless thing for this side has been the unwavering support of its fans. If Lord’s was 80 per cent green, Edgbaston was close to 100pc. It’s the much-needed support of the fans that continues to drive and motivate us to perform better," he said.

"As such, the support and appreciation from the stands and all around the globe were the additional factors that contributed to our last two wins."

Regarding the upcoming matches for Pakistan, the skipper said that the team was focused on winning one game at a time.

"Now our focus is on the next match against Afghanistan and then we will think about Bangladesh. Afghanistan is a dangerous side with quality spinners, so we will not take them lightly and will have to go at our full strength," he said.

In the end, he gave his two cents on the 1992-2019 parallels theory, saying: "There has been so much talk about similarities between the 1992 World Cup and this one. We wish these similarities only culminate on July 14 at Lord’s, but we have to keep our feet on ground and keep faith in God Almighty."a

The fake accounts case history

Information regarding the fake accounts came to the fore when an intelligence agency picked up a prominent money changer in an unrelated case. In December 2015, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) began a discreet investigation into certain bank accounts through which multi-billion rupee transactions have been made.

Investigators have so far identified 29 accounts which received payments, totalling at least Rs35 billion. The probe was initially shelved but resumed almost a year and a half later with FIA’s State Bank circle initiating a formal inquiry in January 2018. By June, the FIA had several high-profile names on its list but was unable to make headway–for several reasons.

It was at his point that the Supreme Court intervened and then chief justice Mian Saqib Nisar took suo motu notice of the ‘slow progress’ in the money-laundering case. In July, Zardari’s close aides Hussain Lawai, Taha Raza and two others were arrested. Subsequently, the first case was registered in the mega-corruption scandal.

The then chief justice ordered the formation of a joint investigation team to quicken the pace of the investigation. The JIT identified 11,500 bank accounts and 924 account holders at the start of their investigation. After the JIT report, the names of 172 individuals were placed on the no-fly list by the interior ministry.
