The person cleaning the window was later confirmed as an associate director for the TV show Saboor was on the sets of and that he was a friend of hers.

Taking to Instagram, Aly said it was an inside joke with the assistant director and that she never made fun of the profession.

“Our back and forth commentary on each other's activities is a norm on the sets, and of course as outsiders, one wouldn't know, but at least give the other person a benefit of doubt as well before you start writing them off as being guilty,” she wrote.

The actor goes on to defend her video and says social media “warriors” were missing the context and called them out for creating this whole situation for followers, likes and engagement.

“Is this what the reporting level has come down to? Is this irresponsible, irregular, non-authentic, hearsay publishing the new 'in' thing on social?”

The actor also quoted a Quranic verse.

She further said that nowhere have we called him a window cleaner or made fun of any specific profession. “What was an inside joke with an individual, has been portrayed as an insult of the profession which was never the intention nor a fact even in the content that's still on my social media. Frankly, these are just not the values I have been brought up with,” she wrote.

Aly added, “Next time you point your finger on someone's actions or words — especially when you are looking at them in isolation and not the whole picture — think and be responsible. Don't just do it for the followers, likes, and engagement.”

North Korea's missile tests not 'breach of trust': US President Trump

US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump said Friday that North Korea's recent missile tests were not a "breach of trust."

"They're short-range and I don't consider that a breach of trust at all. And, you know, at some point I may. But at this point no," he said in an interview with Politico.

"These were short-range missiles and very standard stuff. Very standard."

Pyongyang fired two short-range missiles Thursday following an earlier drill on Saturday. The North had not launched any since November 2017, shortly before leader Kim Jong Un embarked on diplomatic overtures.

Trump, who has said that he and Kim have a good relationship, added that he might eventually lose faith in the North Korean leader.

"I mean it's possible that at some point I will, but right now not at all," he said.

Kim declared an end to the testing of nuclear weapons and long-range missiles during a rapid rapprochement last year, paving the way for his first summit with Trump in Singapore in June.

But a second summit between the two mercurial leaders in Hanoi in February broke up without a deal after they failed to agree on what Pyongyang would be willing to give up in exchange for sanctions relief.

Since then Kim has accused Washington of acting in "bad faith", and given it until the end of the year to change its approach.

Talks between Pakistan, IMF to continue for second day today

Government and the International Monetary Fund will resume their talks today
The Government of Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) will resume their talks regarding a bailout agreement on Saturday for a second day in Islamabad.

The two sides held talks in the federal capital on Friday, after which the Ministry of Finance said they had made "good progress" in their discussions. "Consultations will continue over the weekend," it added.

Sources in the Ministry of Finance had earlier informed that Pakistan and IMF were close to finalising a staff-level agreement expected to range between $6-7 billion.

Under the proposed bailout agreement, Pakistan would have no choice but to concede to the IMF’s demands to hike power tariffs and taxes and withdraw tax concessions and exemptions — which are among the conditions that the country has accepted to secure the loan.

According to the ministry sources, the government would increase the costs of electricity and gas for the consumers in two phases within this year.

New taxes amounting to Rs700 billion would be revealed in the budget for the next fiscal year, to be announced on June 11.

Budget deficit would be restricted to 4.5 per cent, whereas the revenue target for the Federal Board of Revenue would be set at around Rs5.3 trillion. Interest rate would be brought up to 12 per cent.

Under the proposed agreement, the government would not control the rate of the dollar, and subsidies in the energy sector, as well as other sectors, would be withdrawn.

Furthermore, the plan to privatise institutions incurring losses would be shared with the IMF.

The IMF and the Ministry of Finance would release a joint press statement if the agreement is finalised. If no agreement is reached, both the sides would issue separate press releases, the sources had added.

In crisis-hit Argentina, cancer researcher turns to game show for funds

In crisis-hit Argentina, cancer researcher turns to game show for funds
Amid a swirling economic crisis and protests over budget cuts for research in Argentina, one scientist has found a novel way to fundraise: winning money on a television game show.

Marina Simian, a biologist for Argentina’s National Scientific and Technical Research Council, went on the local version of the TV program “Who Wants to be a Millionaire,” saying she needed the money to support her cancer research.

Simian, the head of a nanobiology lab researching oncology treatments for breast cancer and other forms of the disease, used her intellect on the game show to win 500,000 pesos ($11,000) to pay for laboratory supplies.

“I am not a hero. I used a strategy that was a bit creative or different to get financing for my work group,” Simian said in an interview at the National University of San Martín in Buenos Aires.

Government funding has become less reliable for science research in recession-hit Argentina amid rampant inflation and a tumbling peso. The weaker exchange rate has also sapped people’s spending power, especially buying equipment overseas in dollars, a common practice due to better availability and lower prices.

Jorge Aguado, a senior government science and technology official, told Reuters that research budgets have increased since President Mauricio Macri took office in 2015, but acknowledged the economic volatility has caused delays in doling out the funds.

He added that fewer Argentine scientists were returning to the country after doing research abroad, with just 41 last year down from 90 in 2013 - a potential brain drain.

Argentina has three Nobel prize winners for science, but researchers have long lamented a scarcity of resources for the field.

The funding hold-ups are why Simian threw her hat into the ring on Tuesday night as the nation watched on live television.

She runs a lab where she and other researchers study resistance against cancer medications. The project received funding in 2017, but Simian said the money has been coming in at a trickle and last year she only received half of what was due.

Simian, who addressed the current challenge during her appearance on the show, said she hopes her TV debut will draw more attention to the work being done by researchers.

“I cannot believe the impact this has had. I hope it will help us talk about what is happening in science and technology. In the end, that is what matters to us scientists,” Simian told Reuters.

“We love what we do. We do it with great effort, but we need the minimum conditions to work. If there are no changes in the economic direction for science, I see it becoming very complex.”

Guns N' Roses sues Colorado brewery over Guns 'N' Rosé ale

Guns N' Roses sues Colorado brewery over Guns 'N' Rosé ale
Guns N’ Roses is showing an appetite for litigation over a beer.

The rock band has sued the Colorado brewery Oskar Blues, accusing it of trademark infringement for selling an ale named Guns ‘N’ Rosé without permission.

In a complaint filed on Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, Guns N’ Roses accused Oskar Blues of intentionally trading off its goodwill, prestige and fame by selling Guns ‘N’ Rosé since early 2018, and confusing beer drinkers into thinking the band was connected with the ale.

Guns N’ Roses, whose general partners include singer Axl Rose, guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan, also objected to sales of related goods including T-shirts, stickers, buttons and bandannas, “an item uniquely associated” with the band and Rose.

The band is seeking triple damages and a halt to sales of infringing products.

Oskar Blues is part of the Canarchy Craft Brewery Collective. The brewery, its outside law firm and Canarchy did not immediately respond on Friday to requests for comment.

According to court papers, Guns N’ Roses sued after Oskar Blues abandoned both its application to trademark “Guns N Rose” and any future use of that name or the band’s name, but said it would keep selling Guns ‘N’ Rosé beer through March 2020.

Oskar Blues, based in Longmont, Colorado, has said Guns ‘N’ Rosé “bands together sticky prickly pear and floral hibiscus with a subtle hop profile.”

There have been many lawsuits challenging beer names and labels in the United States, where the explosion of craft breweries can make it tough to find unique ways to sell beer.

According to the Brewers Association, there were 7,346 U.S. craft breweries in 2018, up 93 percent from 3,814 in 2014.

The case is Guns N’ Roses v Canarchy Craft Brewery Collective LLC, U.S. District Court, Central District of California, No. 19-04052.

Novartis pitches discounts on pricey gene therapy for deadly muscle disorder

Novartis pitches discounts on pricey gene therapy for deadly muscle disorder
Novartis AG is offering price discounts in negotiations with U.S. health insurers on its gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a treatment that could cost more than a million dollars, but the gesture comes with strings attached.

The Swiss drugmaker wants insurers to commit to coverage for patients identified with the rare and often deadly disease, according to Dave Lennon, head of Novartis’ AveXis unit.

Novartis also seeks their support for widespread screening to identify newborns with SMA, and to ensure quick authorization for the gene therapy, with the aim of starting treatment within two weeks of diagnosis, he said. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is due to decide this month on approval for Novartis’ Zolgensma.

Novartis, which has made a huge bet on gene therapy for future growth, says the one-time treatment could be a cure for SMA and is pushing for a price in the range of $1.5 million to $5 million. That would make Zolgensma the most expensive new therapy to date.

SMA is the leading genetic cause of infant mortality, affecting one in every 10,000 live births. There are up to 500 new U.S. cases of SMA annually. About 60 percent of patients have the most severe Type 1 form of the disease, which often leads to paralysis, impaired breathing and death by their second birthday.

Insurers have balked, saying a multimillion-dollar price tag is too high for society to bear. Their argument is supported by a U.S. drug price watchdog, which concluded Zolgensma is cost effective at about $900,000.

It is unusual for drugmakers to offer discounts on a novel and potentially life-saving treatment. But getting insurers to assure quick coverage for eligible patients, rather than subjecting them to a lengthy individual review, could help Novartis as it seeks to displace Biogen Inc’s SMA therapy Spinraza. “We are very much interested in making sure that payers (support) newborn screening, that they establish fast turnaround on coverage decisions, and that they have specific policies that cover gene therapy for SMA,” Lennon told Reuters.

“As we negotiate discounts, et cetera, with payers, and the contracts with those payers, we’re trying to make sure they put those elements in place,” Lennon said.

Both Zolgensma and Spinraza have shown the best results when infants with SMA are treated within the first few weeks of life before symptoms emerge, helping preserve development of motor neurons necessary for walking and breathing. Only a small number of Zolgensma patients have been followed for up to four years, while Spinraza has been used by thousands of patients since it was approved in 2016.

Spinraza is also costly. It is administered by spinal injection every four months at a price of $750,000 for the first year and $375,000 annually thereafter. Wall Street forecasts for Zolgensma assume many families will seek the potential one-time gene therapy first, and consider Spinraza if needed later on.

“Early treatment allows payers to reap much more benefit for the patients,” Lennon said.

 ADVANCED DISCUSSIONS

Negotiations with payers are in advanced stages, but final pricing will only be set after the drug’s approval. Novartis has offered payment alternatives, such as reimbursement in installments over three to five years, or providing discounts if a patient does not see specific benefits from the therapy.

Most payers, however, are focused on a one-time payment and seek discounts to secure reimbursement, Lennon said.

Novartis expects to have agreements with insurers covering 30% of the 160 million Americans who have commercial health plans within 30 days of Zolgensma’s approval, he said.

The therapy is key to Novartis Chief Executive Vas Narasimhan’s push into treatments for rare diseases. Wall Street analysts forecast Zolgensma sales of $350 million this year, rising to $2 billion in 2024, according to Refinitiv data.

Clinical trials for both Zolgensma and Spinraza have shown that early treatment produces better results, potentially reducing the total cost of care.

“The difference is, the child walks and is pretty normal in their lifetime, versus they are very weak, on a (respiratory machine), have a feeding tube,” said Dr. Russell Butterfield, a neurologist at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. “Newborn screening is really the only way to get to that dramatically higher outcome.”

But U.S. testing for SMA in newborns is spotty. Only six U.S. states have added it to mandatory screening panels at birth. It could take until 2022 to become standard nationwide, according to patient advocacy group Cure SMA.

Novartis, as well as Biogen, is working with Cure SMA to accelerate the adoption of screening and wants to ensure that payers are supportive. Lennon did not provide details on the extent of a potential discount, but the offer could help health plans struggling with the economics of Zolgensma.

David Lassen, chief clinical officer at Prime Therapeutics, is working on Zolgensma coverage recommendations for Blue Cross Blue Shield health plans covering 15 million Americans. Lassen has urged Novartis to price Zolgensma closer to the $900,000 deemed appropriate by the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER). That was based on a calculation of the cost per year of healthy life gained.

“Anything over that is not going to achieve that price to value,” Lassen said. Prime Therapeutics estimates that its Blue Cross Blue Shield plans will identify up to 35 patients with SMA Type 1 in the next year, making the cost of therapy an important factor for them.

Small insurer SelectHealth covers nearly 1 million people in Idaho and in Utah, where statewide newborn SMA testing began in 2018. SelectHealth said it has also pushed Novartis to lower the price. “Even if we amortize it across a lifetime,” said Eric Cannon, SelectHealth’s assistant vice president of pharmacy benefits, “we will still never collect enough premium to cover the cost of that treatment.”

Increase in range of Palestinian rockets forced Israel to offer Gaza truce: Hamas

Increase in range of Palestinian rockets forced Israel to offer Gaza truce
Hamas says Israel scrambled to seek a ceasefire in its recent military aggression against Gaza through mediators after the Palestinian resistance increased the range of their retaliatory rockets.

In an interview with the Palestinian al-Aqsa TV channel on Wednesday, Khalil al-Hayya, a senior member of the Hamas political bureau, hailed the Gaza Joint Chamber of Military Operations — which comprises various resistance factions —for standing firmly against the enemy in the recent confrontation with the Tel Aviv regime.

He added that the regime sent representatives for talks with senior members of the Palestinian resistance front after the range of the rockets fired from Gaza towards the Israeli-occupied territories surpassed 40 kilometers.

The Gaza escalation erupted last Friday following the deaths of four Palestinians in an Israeli air raid on the coastal sliver and the regime’s live fire targeting Gaza protesters.

Israeli warplanes struck some 350 sites in Gaza, claiming the lives of 27 Palestinian people.

In response, the Palestinians fired some 700 rockets at the occupied lands between Saturday morning and early Monday morning, killing four Israelis and injuring 200 others.

Israel’s “Iron Dome” only intercepted 240 of the 690 projectiles fired from Gaza, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of the missile system.

After three days of deadly Israeli airstrikes and retaliatory Palestinian rocket attacks, the two sides reached a ceasefire agreement on Monday with the help of Egyptian and Qatari mediators.

The Hamas military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said on Monday that it had succeeded in overcoming Israel’s so-called Iron Dome missile system during the latest confrontation with the regime thanks to its new rocket-launching tactic.

The new tactic saw the Gaza-based resistance fighters overwhelm Israel’s “Iron Dome” by “firing dozens of missiles in one single burst” towards the occupied territories, it added.

However, the truce angered the Israelis living south of the occupied territories, who were most affected by the flare-up. They censured the Tel Aviv regime for failing to ensure their security.

Hayya further said, during the fresh flare-up of Gaza tensions, things went out of control due to Israel’s procrastination in implementing the ceasefire understandings and the regime’s firing at Palestinians in the anti-occupation Great March of Return protests, he added.

Hayya also stressed that Hamas would not bargain over the March of Return demonstrations, which began on March 30, 2018, with the participants demanding the right to return for the Palestinians driven out of their homeland by Israeli aggression.

He further warned that Israel’s continued blockade of the Gaza Strip could blow up the situation at any moment.

Iraqi PM says no change in Iran ties after Pompeo visit

Iraqi PM says no change in Iran ties after Pompeo visit
Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi says his country will not be part of the regime of US sanctions against Iran, and that is Baghdad’s clear and declared policy.

The premier made the remarks in a Thursday meeting with the ambassadors of the UK, Germany, and France to Baghdad.

“Iraq seeks to have relations and cooperation with all its neighbors, Arab countries, and all other states in the region and the world including the US and Iran,” he said.

“Iraq’s relations play a key role in reinforcing security and stability as well as the economic prosperity of the region and the world … and its balanced ties have positively affected its internal stability,” the Iraqi prime minister said

Abdul-Mahdi stressed that Iraq’s decision not to be part of the US’ sanctions against Iran is a pillar of this balanced policy.

Leader of the Iraq’s National Wisdom Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, also told US Assistant Secretary of State David Satterfield that the Arab country will not turn into a base for aggression against other countries.

“Iraq is trying to reinforce stability in the region and remain neutral and independent in its decisions, and thus does not allow its territory to be used for aggression against other states,” he said.

The comments came after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo scrapped a visit to Germany on Tuesday to make an unannounced trip to Iraq, pressing Iraqi leaders about what he called the increased dangers to Americans there from Iran’s forces and allies.

Pompeo said he also used the four-hour visit to Iraq to discuss "big energy deals that can disconnect them from Iranian energy."

Iraq's Electricity Minister Luay al-Khateeb said Monday his country had brushed aside US demands that Baghdad stop gas and power imports from neighboring Iran.

Khateeb did not say whether the Americans had made the demand after ending waivers for exports of crude oil from Iran this month.

US pressures on Iraq to wean itself off Iran has become a major point of conflict between Washington and Baghdad. A lightening rod in their spat is Iraq’s reliance on Iranian gas imports to generate electricity consumed daily in the country.

Washington is pressing Baghdad to source them from other countries or develop its own energy self-sufficiency. Iraqi leaders say the country cannot stop Iranian gas imports without serious electricity shortages.

Russia meanwhile urged the international community to continue trade with Iran despite US sanctions, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

In a statement published on its official website, the ministry condemned US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal as well as pressure tactics by Washington on other countries to stop trade with Iran.

The ministry stressed that Iran "scrupulously" carries out its obligations under the deal and its decision to suspend it partially is a last-ditch stand.

Russia called all signatories of the deal, including Iran, to refrain from further actions to put the agreement under threat.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has lashed out at the US sanctions, saying they do not just harm Iran, but are detrimental to the entire region.

In its latest anti-Iran measure, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order to impose new sanctions on Iran to deny it of revenue from exports in the metal and mining sectors.

"Today's action targets Iran's revenue from the export of industrial metals -- 10 percent of its export economy -- and puts other nations on notice that allowing Iranian steel and other metals into your ports will no longer be tolerated," Trump said in a statement Wednesday.

"Tehran can expect further actions unless it fundamentally alters its conduct."

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom announced that its project to build nuclear power units at Iran’s Bushehr is unaffected by current tensions surrounding US sanctions against Iran.

Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachov told RIA Novosti, "Rosatom has always met and is meeting all its obligations in all of its international projects."

Russian Foreign Ministry also expressed its intention to continue cooperating with Iran, despite the US sanctions and Tehran's decision to suspend some of its obligations under the multilateral Iran nuclear agreement.

The ministry said the country would continue to construct the Bushehr nuclear power plant in the country as well as convert the former Fordow uranium enrichment facility into a stable isotope production plant

"We would like to express our readiness to continue cooperate with Tehran within the framework of JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action], as well as in other bilateral projects,” the ministry said Thursday.

Pervaiz Khattak warns Khawaja Asif in NA session

Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak
Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak warned Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Khawaja Asif in a National Assembly session on Friday, saying that the ruling party members also know how to retort in anger.

The defence minister was speaking in relation to Khawaja Asif’s behavior in the assembly on Thursday, saying that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members would respond to whatever was said in the House.

In the same vein, Khattak said that the PTI lawmakers, if pushed, can also stand to defend ‘their speaker’.

The usage of the term led to a protest from Opposition, whose members told the NA Speaker that he is the same for everyone in the assembly.

To which Asad Qaiser responded that he is the Speaker for the entire assembly.

On Thursday, PML-N leaders demanded Qaiser to resign from his post.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Khawaja Asif and others were irked over Asif not being allowed by Speaker Qaiser to speak on the floor of the House during the session. The speaker had instead permitted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's Murad Saeed to express his viewpoint.

The decision of the NA speaker prompted a protest by opposition members, who surrounded the speaker's dais.

Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament House, Abbasi said Speaker Qaiser had lost the trust of the members due to his behaviour.

FIA arrest Chinese, Pakistani couple from Islamabad Airport

The Federal Investigation Agency arrested Chinese and Pakistani couples from the Islamabad Airport
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Friday arrested Chinese and Pakistani couples from the Islamabad Airport as it continued its crackdown against human trafficking.

According to the FIA, the arrested Chinese nationals appeared as married couples and were smuggling Pakistani girls to China.

Two Chinese men and three Pakistani women were among those arrested.

The FIA further said the Chinese nationals were involved in organ trafficking.

On Thursday, the FIA busted a human smuggling cell and arrested 11 Chinese nationals and two Pakistanis from Lahore’s Johar Town.

Earlier this week, the FIA arrested fifteen Chinese nationals including a woman from Rawalpindi accused of trafficking Pakistani girls to China. The gang was led by a Chinese national Song Chuaoyang who was also arrested.

Two Pakistani girls were recovered from the accused. A Christian and two Muslims girls were earlier sent back to their parents by the FIA authorities.

On Monday, FIA busted a racket of Chinese nationals involved in trafficking Pakistani girls to China by contracting marriages.

Deputy Director FIA Jamil Ahmad Khan Mayo said authorities, as part of a crackdown against foreigners involved in illegal activities in the country, arrested eight Chinese nationals from Lahore airport and other areas on the charges of trafficking young women to China after marrying them.

According to the official, the suspects, with the assistance of Pakistani agents, contracted marriages with unsuspecting local girls and then trafficked them to China where the victims were forced into prostitution.

They said the suspected leader of the ring is the son of a Punjab Police officer, who had fled when a raid was conducted for his arrest. The officials said the suspected ring leader has acquired interim bail until May 13.

China denies media reports
The Chinese Embassy in a statement denied media reports that Pakistan women were being forced into prostitution or sale of human organs.

“According to investigations by the Ministry of Public Security of China, there is no forced prostitution or sale of human organs for those Pakistani women who stay in China after marriage with Chinese,” the embassy said in a statement.

The statement added that a few criminals would not be allowed to undermine China’s friendship with Pakistan and hurt friendly feelings between people of the two countries.

North Korea launches more missiles, US seizes ship in mounting tensions

North Korea launches more missiles
North Korea fired what appeared to be two short-range missiles on Thursday in its second such test in less than a week, and the United States said it had seized a North Korean cargo ship as tensions again mounted between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump said “nobody is happy” at the missile launches, but still appeared to hold the door open for more talks with North Korea. South Korea said the tests were worrisome and unhelpful and likely a protest against Trump refusing to ease economic sanctions at a failed summit in Hanoi in February.

The United States has given no sign of willingness to budge on sanctions and on Thursday the US Justice Department announced the seizure of a North Korean cargo vessel it said was involved in the illicit shipping of coal.

North Korea has effectively pulled back from engagement with Washington since the Hanoi meeting between its leader Kim Jong Un and Trump collapsed without agreement on US demands for the dismantling of Pyongyang’s nuclear program and Kim’s demands for relief from punishing sanctions.

“The relationship continues ... I know they want to negotiate, they’re talking about negotiating. But I don’t think they’re ready to negotiate,” Trump told reporters.

Trump has previously held up a freeze in missile testing since 2017 as a sign of progress in his talks with North Korea after exchanges of fiery rhetoric two years ago raised fears of war. Trump stressed that the missiles fired were not of a kind that could threaten the United States.

“We’re looking at it very seriously right now. They were smaller missiles, they were short-range missiles,” he said. “Nobody’s happy about it but we’re taking a good look and we’ll see.”

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged all parties to continue talks toward denuclearization, warning that Pyongyang’s latest action “serves only to increase tensions,” UN spokesman Farhan Haq said.

Less than a week ago, Kim oversaw the test-firing of multiple rockets and a missile. It was North Korea’s first test of a ballistic missile since an intercontinental ballistic missile launch in November 2017.

The two missiles fired on Thursday went east from the northwestern area of Kusong, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said. They covered distances of 420 km (260 miles) and 270 km (168 miles) and reached an altitude of about 50 km (30 miles) before falling into the sea, they said.

South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in, who has strongly advocated engagement with North Korea, said that even if the missiles were short range, they could still violate UN resolutions barring North Korea from developing ballistic missiles.

“North Korea seemed to be discontented it could not reach a deal in Hanoi,” he told South Korean broadcaster KBS, while adding that he saw the tests as a sign that North Korea wanted to negotiate and that he planned to push for a fourth inter-Korean summit with Kim.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who earlier cut short a European trip to return to Washington for meetings on Iran, was also due to have discussions on North Korea after learning of the launches, a senior US State Department official said.

Pompeo was due to meet on Thursday with Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, who is expected to raise Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s hopes for a summit with Kim.

Analysts said it was too soon to say exactly what kind of missiles were involved in the latest launches, but the range would probably exceed that of most of the rockets North Korea fired on Saturday from its east coast into the ocean.

'Escalation tactics'

“North Korea has returned to its classic escalation tactics from before,” said Yang Uk, a senior research fellow at the Korea Defence and Security Forum. “I believe they will keep escalating by using what appear to be short-range missiles, something that will not cause the US to react right away.”

Harry Kazianis, of Washington’s Center for the National Interest think tank, said the launches could only worsen tensions.

“While this recent launch of short-range missiles does not violate Pyongyang’s promise to halt longer-range tests, North Korea has now made it clear it will not halt developing other parts of its military capabilities that threaten the region,” he said.

“Kim’s goal, beyond ensuring his weapons programs are becoming more powerful, is quite clear: to show America and its allies that if they aren’t willing to compromise on the terms of denuclearization, that Pyongyang will indeed go its own way, with missile launches once again becoming the new norm.”

The latest tests coincided with a visit to the South Korean capital by US special envoy for North Korea Stephen Biegun.

North Korea lashed out at the United States and South Korea this week, saying last weekend’s launches were “regular and self-defensive.” It criticized Seoul and Washington for carrying out military drills.

A North Korean media report on Wednesday had hinted at more tests, saying: “The south Korean military were astonished by the recent strike drill. It might fall into a swoon to see a strike drill involving more powerful cutting-edge weapons.”

North Korea has repeatedly denounced US-led sanctions aimed at pressing it to give up its nuclear weapons and the mood will not have been lightened by the ship seizure announced on Thursday, the first by the United States of a North Korean cargo vessel for violating sanctions.

The Justice Department said the 17,061-ton ship “Wise Honest,” one of North Korea’s largest bulk carriers, was in the possession of the United States and was currently approaching US territorial waters.

At the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Thursday, the United States also took aim at North Korea’s rights record, calling on it to dismantle camps it said held tens of thousands of political prisoners.

North Korea again denied the existence of political prisoners and camps, but said US sanctions were hampering North Koreans’ enjoyment of life.

“Such anachronistic acts are very dangerous,” its ambassador to the council, Han Tae Song, said.

Last week, the United Nations reported that North Korea had suffered its worst harvest in decades, leaving many there chronically short of food.

Washington blamed the shortages on the North Korean government and said it could meet its people’s needs if it redirected funds from its weapons programs.

Trump said at the weekend he was still confident he could reach a deal with Kim, although he and Pompeo have brushed aside Kim’s demand for Washington to show more flexibility in talks by the end of the year.

In 2017, after North Korea tested its most powerful ICBM, which it said was capable of delivering a warhead anywhere in the United States, Kim declared his nuclear force complete. He then extended an olive branch to Seoul and Washington, holding two summits with Trump and three with Moon.

Over 1,000 guns seized at luxury Los Angeles mansion

A weapons cache of more than 1,000 guns seized at luxury Los Angeles mansion
A weapons cache of more than 1,000 firearms and ammunition was seized in a raid on a multi-million dollar mansion in an upmarket neighbourhood of Los Angeles, law enforcement authorities said.

The seizure came following an anonymous tip that firearms were being sold illegally out of the home, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) said.

The house, which is mostly hidden from the street by high hedges, is located in the exclusive Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles, near the famed Playboy Mansion and less than a mile from the home of music industry power couple Jay-Z and Beyonce.

The Los Angeles Times said the home belongs to Cynthia Beck, who has three children with Gordon Getty, the son of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty.

Video footage taken by local television stations showed Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers and ATF agents inspecting enormous piles of handguns and rifles on grey tarpaulin outside the home.

Photos taken at the scene also showed boxes of ammunition stacked on a table inside the large house, which was cluttered with the weapons.

The local ABC news station said some of the guns were modern while others dated back 50 years or more. A few were even collectables that dated back to the Civil War, it said.

'Beyond comprehension'

Police said a 57-year-old man identified as Girard Damien Saenz was arrested and faces a number of firearms charges including distributing, transporting and selling assault weapons.

Saenz was released Thursday morning on $50,000 bail and it was unclear if he had a valid permit to possess the weapons.

Authorities noted that while it is not illegal to own such a large amount of weapons, it is illegal if someone is selling them without following proper state or federal regulations.

"It's just beyond comprehension that somebody can have so many weapons in a residence like this in a neighbourhood such like this," Los Angeles police lieutenant Chris Ramirez told reporters at the scene.

"I've never seen so many weapons in my career of 31 years," he added. "It's kind of astounding."

Authorities said it took some 30 law enforcement officers more than 15 hours — beginning at 4AM (0800 GMT) on Wednesday — to clear the house and remove the weapons.

"Pursuant to an anonymous tip, ATF and LAPD became aware of an individual conducting illegal firearms (transactions) outside the scope of the federal firearm license that the individual possesses," the ATF said in a statement.

"A large amount of firearms manufacturing equipment and tools have been recovered," it added. "ATF and LAPD have no reason to believe the public is in any danger."

Beck, who is said to be living in Europe, could not be reached for comment and it was unclear if she was renting the house to Saenz or if she was aware of the weapons stacked inside.

The Times said Beck and Saenz together own several properties in the Los Angeles area and an office building in San Francisco.
