Asia Cup: Bangladesh thrash Sri Lanka by 137 runs

Asia Cup: Bangladesh thrash Sri Lanka by 137 runs
Bangladesh on Saturday thrashed Sri Lanka by massive 137 runs and kicked off their campaign in the perfect motion in continent’s premier ODI competition.

Batting first, senior batsman Mushfiqur Rahim smashed a brilliant career-best hundred to steer Bangladesh to an emphatic 137-run victory over Sri Lanka in the opening Asia Cup match in Dubai on Saturday.

The former captain’s 150-ball 144 with 11 fours and four sixes lifted Bangladesh from a precarious 1-2 in the first over to 261 after they won the toss and batted in the Group B match.

Sri Lanka, who have won five Asia Cup titles, had lost half of their side for 60 in the 17th over before being bowled out for 124 in 35.2 overs, succumbing to their second-worst defeat against Bangladesh in 45 one-day internationals.

Sri Lanka’s worst defeat against Bangladesh was a 163-run loss at Dhaka earlier this year.

Dilruwan Perera (29), Upul Tharanga (27) and Suranga Lakmal (20) were the only batsmen to offer any resistance as Bangladesh bowled superbly from the start.

Mustafizur Rahman, Mehidy Hasan and skipper Mashrafe Mortaza took two wickets apiece.

But it was Rahim who gave a treat to a packed 25,000-capacity stadium, most of them Bengali expats working as labourers.

Rahim added 131 for the third wicket with Mohammad Mithun (63) to lead the recovery after recalled Sri Lankan paceman Lasith Malinga removed Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan for ducks.

Rahim bettered his previous ODI best of 117 he scored against India at Fatullah four years ago, helping his team to add 63 in the last ten overs.

Mithun hit five fours and two sixes in his 68-ball enterprising knock, his first ODI fifty.

Malinga finished with 4-23 in his first match in 13 months.

Afghanistan are the third team in the group. Pakistan meet qualifiers Hong Kong in Group A, which also features defending champions India.

Palestinian mission shuttered in Washington

Palestinian mission shuttered in Washington
The Palestinian diplomatic mission in Washington ceased operations on Thursday following a demand by the United States to shut down but expressed hope the closure would be short-lived.

State Department officials on Monday ordered the office shuttered, in a bid to pressure the Palestinians to enter peace talks with Israel.

It was the latest point of tension between the administration of President Donald Trump and the Palestinians, who cut off contact with Washington after Trump recognised the disputed city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December.

“Today is the deadline” for closure, Husam Zomlot, who headed the Palestine Liberation Organisation mission, said in a Facebook video addressed to “the great people of America.” The closure came on the 25th anniversary of the Oslo accords, the first agreements between the rival Israelis and Palestinians which promised to end decades of deadly conflict, but which are now deadlocked and tarnished by soured relations.

Zomlot on Thursday denounced the “unfortunate and vindictive” US move to close the Palestinian mission.

“It was unsurprising to us the Trump administration gave us only two choices: either we lose our relationship with the administration or we lose our rights as a nation,” he said.

“Our president, leadership and the people of Palestine opted for our rights.” Zomlot said the Palestinians were “extremely saddened by the current state of affairs.” Addressing the “millions upon millions” of Americans who remain friends of Palestine, he hoped that “may we soon return to continue to be a symbol and a reflection of the historic relationship between the Palestinian and the American people.” Prior to ordering the mission’s closure, the United States cut more than $200 million in aid to the Palestinians and cancelled its support for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

The move to not grant the mission its normal six-month renewal came after Palestinian leaders allegedly breached the arrangement by calling for Israeli officials to be prosecuted at the International Criminal Court.

ECP extends registration date for overseas Pakistanis voters
The online registration for overseas Pakistanis for upcoming by-polls has been extended by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from September 15 to September 17.

By-polls will be held on 11 National Assembly and 26 provincial assembly seats on October 14.

According to an ECP official, overseas Pakistanis can now register themselves as voters by September 17.

All registered voters can cast their votes between 8am and 6pm (Pakistan Standard Time) on polling day, the official added.

He further added a letter had been written to the secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to educate the overseas Pakistanis in the registration process and to extend all possible assistance to them.

The official added, the eligibility criteria for overseas Pakistanis to register and cast vote is to have a machine-readable passport (MRP), National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) and a valid email address.

A website has been developed by the ECP and NADRA to raise awareness and encourage them to register for i-voting with instruction in both English and Urdu, he added.

Moreover, he said a report will be submitted to the Parliment for further legislation regarding the pilot system.

The system has been made foolproof, he added.

On August 17, the Supreme Court (SC) had allowed Pakistanis living abroad to vote in the by-polls.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar had remarked that overseas Pakistanis would be participating in the by-election through i-voting, a system that allows voters to cast ballots from any computer connected to the internet anywhere in the world.

Given huge protocol despite requesting against it: President Alvi

Given huge protocol despite requesting against it: President Alvi
President Arif Alvi on Saturday clarified that he was given a VIP protocol from the airport to his residence in Karachi despite his request to not be given a "huge protocol".

After a video made rounds of the president being accompanied by over two dozen cars from Karachi airport, Alvi took to Twitter and said that he had only asked for two to four cars to accompany his.

"The long chain of official cars following me is despite the fact that I asked all officials present at the airport not to embarrass me with a huge protocol and that one or two cars in front and one or two cars behind may satisfy their security needs. Did not happen. We have to try harder," he tweeted.

The president's protocol also appeared to include more cars as in the video, the protocols given to Sindh chief minister and governor were also captured.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Sindh Governor Imran Ismail had gone to the airport to receive President Alvi as he returned to the metropolis for the first time since taking office.

President Alvi arrived in the city on Friday night.

The president reportedly picked up his own luggage from the conveyor belt at the airport and also queued to board the airplane rather than opting for VIP facilities.

Separately, when a Twitter user asked about the police mobiles stationed outside his house, President Alvi responded, "We should look into this too and not become a nuisance for my own neighbourhood where I have lived all my life."

"I do not begrudge security but when it becomes painful for the common man we should draw a line somewhere," he added.

Last month, Prime Minister Imran Khan had expressed his displeasure over official protocol given to him while travelling from Bani Gala to a private hotel in Islamabad.

The PM had remarked: “I was given official protocol [while coming here today] — the country cannot be run like this."

Following the premier's remarks, some of the vehicles had been sent back.

Florence kills 5, including infant, in North Carolina

Florence kills 5, including infant, in North Carolina
At least five people, including a mother and her infant, have died in North Carolina as Tropical Storm Florence slowly moved from the Tar Heel State into South Carolina, officials said Friday.

After coming ashore in North Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane, Florence was downgraded to a tropical storm Friday afternoon and trudged into South Carolina as night came.
Two people died in Wilmington after a tree fell on their house, the city's police department said.

"WPD can confirm the first two fatalities of Hurricane #Florence in Wilmington. A mother and infant were killed when a tree fell on their house," police tweeted Friday afternoon. "The father was transported to (New Hanover Regional Medical Center) with injuries."

The hospital said it has received three injured patients.

In the town of Hampstead, emergency responders going to a call for cardiac arrest Friday morning found their path blocked by downed trees. When they got to the home, the woman was deceased, Chad McEwen, assistant county manager for Pender County, said.

The fourth person who died was a man in Lenoir County who was hooking up a generator, Gov. Roy Cooper's office said. Another man in the county who was checking on his dogs outside was killed in what his family thought was a wind-related death Friday morning, emergency officials said.

Florence was inching along Friday night into Saturday, trapping people in flooded homes and promising days of destruction and human suffering.

Storm surges, punishing winds and rain are turning some towns into rushing rivers -- and the storm is expected to crawl over parts of the Carolinas into the weekend, pounding some of the same areas over and over.

Billy Sample, a resident stuck in the town of Carolina Beach, North Carolina, said Friday night: "The height of the storm didn't feel as bad as it is now. The house is shaking back and forth much more violently than when the eyewall came through."

Sample said that when he looked outside of his house, which is about 1,000 yards from the beach, he saw the rain pooling up on the street and what looked like storm surge coming up the road.

In the besieged city of New Bern, rescuers had plucked more than 200 people from rising waters by midmorning Friday, but about 150 more had to wait as conditions worsened and a storm surge reached 10 feet, officials said. That number was down to 40 later in the day.

The Gaza Health Ministry said Shadi Abdul Aziz Mahmoud Abdulal, a 12-year-old boy, was killed after Israeli forces shot him in the head east of the city of Jabalia in the besieged Gaza Strip on Friday.

Ashraf al-Qedra, the spokesman for the ministry, added that Israeli troops shot dead Muhammad Shaqora, 21, east of al-Bureij refugee camp.

The third victim was identified as Hani Ramzi Afana, 21, from Rafah.

Many injuries were also reported during the Friday's clashes. Children were among the casualties.

Tensions have been running high near the fence since March 30, which marked the start of a series of protests dubbed “The Great March of Return.” Palestinian protesters demand the right to return for those driven out of their homeland.

The clashes in Gaza reached their peak on May 14, the eve of the 70th anniversary of Nakba Day, or the Day of Catastrophe, which coincided this year with Washington's relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem al-Quds.

Israeli fire has taken the lives of nearly 175 Palestinians since March 30. More than 19,000 Palestinians have also sustained injuries.

On June 13, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, sponsored by Turkey and Algeria, condemning Israel for Palestinian civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip.

Gaza has been under Israeli siege since June 2007, causing a decline in living standards as well as unprecedented unemployment and poverty.

Israel has also launched several wars on the Palestinian sliver, the last of which began in early July 2014 and ended in late August the same year. The Israeli military aggression killed nearly 2,200 Palestinians and injured over 11,100 others.

Asad Umar Not Scared Of Taking Risks, Bloomberg

Asad Umar
A borrowing binge has left the Pakistani nation in need of a bailout of more than $12 billion, he said in an interview last month.

Most analysts expect new Prime Minister Imran Khan, the former cricket legend, will soon be knocking on the door of the International Monetary Fund once again. Bloomberg reported.

Foreign-currency reserves have plunged by a third to $9.9 billion in the past year, while the nation is running twin deficits of more than 5 percent of gross domestic product on both its current account and budget. Authorities have devalued the rupee four times since December.

The move helped turn Engro into one of the nation’s biggest companies with a market value that’s now more than eight times larger. Bloomberg reported.

Dollar dips after weak U.S. data, Turkish hike supports emerging currencies

Dollar dips after weak U.S. data, Turkish hike supports emerging currencies
Emerging currencies, like the South African rand and the Mexican peso, held onto to gains having surged, as investors in emerging markets registered relief that Turkey’s central bank had hiked its policy rate to 24 percent to restore confidence in the lira.

The greenback took a hit overnight after the U.S. consumer price index (CPI), the government’s broadest inflation gauge, rose just 0.2 percent in August and less than the 0.3 percent projected by analysts in a Reuters poll.

“The dollar has sagged mainly due to the soft U.S. CPI,” said Masafumi Yamamoto, chief forex strategist at Mizuho Securities in Tokyo.

The dollar’s index against a basket of six major currencies was a shade lower at 94.491 after slipping 0.3 percent on Thursday, when it touched 94.428, its lowest since Aug. 31.

The euro inched up 0.05 percent to $1.1695 after gaining more than 0.5 percent overnight when it brushed a two-week high of $1.1701.

The ECB kept policy unchanged as expected on Thursday, staying on track to end its bond purchases this year and raise interest rates next autumn.

The Turkish lira was a shade weaker at 6.137 per dollar after ending the previous day on a gain of more than 4 percent.

The lira surged after Turkey’s central bank raised its benchmark one-week repo rate by 625 basis points to 24 percent on Thursday, in a bid to stabilise the currency, which had slumped to a record low against the dollar a month ago.

By tightening policy the central bank demonstrated an independent streak, as Turkish President Tayipp Erdogan is a self-declared enemy of high interest rates.

Following the lira’s rally, the South African rand gained 1.3 percent against the dollar on Thursday and the Mexican peso rose 1 percent.

MSCI’s emerging markets currency index bounced further away from a 16-month low reached earlier in the week.

“The rate hike by the Turkish central bank deserves praise but the key point going forward is President Erdogan’s views on the monetary tightening,” said Kota Hirayama, senior emerging market economist at SMBC Nikko Securities.

“It is naive to assume that Erdogan will continue respecting central bank independence. The Turkish central bank will lose credibility again and its rate hike will be wasted if monetary policy is disrupted by politics.”

China’s yuan was 0.2 percent weaker at 6.8520 in onshore trade after gaining more than 0.4 percent the previous day.

Data released on Friday showed China’s investment growth for August fall to a new record low, while industrial output and retail sales for the month both rose by more than expected.

The Australian dollar, seen as a proxy for China-related trades as well as a barometer of risk sentiment, was nearly flat at $0.7194.

The Aussie was headed for a gain of more than 1 percent on the week, having pulled back from a 2-1/2-year low of $0.7085 plumbed on Tuesday.

The dollar traded at 111.83 yen after climbing to 112.08 yen, its highest since Aug. 1, with rising equities dimming the Japanese currency’s safe-have allure.
