Kashmiris across the globe observing Indian Republic Day, as Black Day

Kashmiris are observing Indian Republic Day, today, as Black Day
Kashmiris on both sides of the line of control and across the globe are observing Indian Republic Day, today, as Black Day in protest against the continued denial of their just right to self-determination.

The day will be marked with a complete strike and protests in occupied Kashmir and anti-India demonstrations and rallies in world capitals.

This year, Kashmiris are observing the black day at the time when Modi-led Indian government scrapped special status of the internationally-acknowledged disputed territory.

It has also usurped the fundamental rights of the citizens through massive deployment of its military and prolonged curfew and communication blackout, Radio Pakistan reported.

Protest rallies and demonstrations will be held across the world including Pakistan and Azad Kashmir.

Meanwhile, India’s Republic Day has brought more miseries to the already besieged people as Indian troops have intensified checking and frisking in Srinagar city and other parts of the occupied Kashmir in the name of so-called security measures.

This year, the observance of the Black Day is also aimed at registering protest against the continued lockdown of occupied Kashmir imposed by India since 5th August last year.

The Hurriyat leaders in their statements and messages said that India is not a real democratic country as it has been suppressing the Kashmiris’ voice through military might for the past over seven decades.

They said India has no right to celebrate its Republic Day in Kashmir as it occupied the territory against the will of the Kashmiri people.

Meanwhile, as the Kashmir valley remained under strict military lockdown on 174th straight day, today.

The occupation authorities have taken strict measures in the name of so-called security across the territory, especially in Srinagar.

Former cricketers furious on pitch prepared for match against bangladesh

Inzamam-ul-Haq and Rashid Latif have shown their anger on the pitch prepared for the first T20 match
Former Pakistan cricket team captains Inzamam-ul-Haq and Rashid Latif have shown their anger on the pitch prepared for the first T20 match played between Pakistan and Bangladesh at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore yesterday.

Former chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq said that curators should make a pitch suitable for T20 cricket and also follow Australian who prepared falt tracks for T20 matches.

“It was not a typical T20 pitch, fans were here to see fours and sixes. The batsmen were so uncomfortable that even 142 runs were looking like a gigantic total for Pakistan. Curators must make a better T20 pitch,” former batsman said.

“Aussies prepared great pitches for T20 where big scores were an average score, we should follow the same,” he added.

Former Wicket-keeper batsman Rashid Latif focused on a point if the pitches would be the same so the same thing will be witnessed in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

“It is very difficult to make pitches in winters and if pitches will be same in PSL, so we will witness the same. We are not saying that there must be 200+ run pitch but the average score should be around 160-170,” Rashis said.

He also said that we can not judge the performances of debutants Ahsan Ali and Haris Rauf at this pitch.

It must be noted Pakistan won the first T20I match by five wickets courtesy Shoaib Mailk’s power pack return. The second match will be played today at the same venue.

34 troops diagnosed with traumatic brain injury after Iran strike: Pentagon

Pentagon confirms 34 soldiers diagnosed with traumatic brain injury after Iran strike
The Pentagon said on Friday that 34 service members had been diagnosed with traumatic brain injury following missile strikes by Iran on a base in Iraq earlier this month.

Trump and other top officials initially said Iran’s attack had not killed or injured any U.S. service members.

Last week the U.S. military said 11 U.S. troops had been treated for concussion symptoms after the attack on the Ain al-Asad air base in western Iraq and this week said additional troops had been moved out of Iraq for potential injuries.

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman told reporters that eight service members who had been previously transported to Germany had been moved to the United States. Hoffman said the service members were transported earlier Friday and would receive treatment at either Walter Reed military hospital or their home bases.

Nine service members remain in Germany and are undergoing evaluations and treatment.

On Wednesday, Trump appeared to play down the injuries, saying he “heard that they had headaches and a couple of other things.”

Pentagon officials have said there had been no effort to minimize or delay information on concussive injuries, but its handling of the injuries following Tehran’s attack has renewed questions over the U.S. military’s policy regarding how it deals with suspected brain injuries.

Mustafa Kamal speaks out against division of Sindh in Larkana rally

Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) chief Syed Mustafa Kamal
Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) chief Syed Mustafa Kamal said that no one could divide Sindh, lashing out at the federal and Sindh government for neglecting masses.

The former Karachi mayor was speaking to a PSP rally in PPP's stronghold Larkana where he criticised those who talked about dividing Sindh into two parts.

"Sindh can never be divided," he said, saying that those who were using the "Sindh card" were doing so for their benefit. He thanked Sindhis for welcoming Mohajirs who had migrated to Pakistan at the time of partition.

"I'm not saying this [thanking Sindhis] only because I am in Larkana," he said. "I have been stating the same in front of Mohajirs as well that Sindhis welcomed us with open arms and treated us like brothers."

Lashing out at the government, Kamal advised PM Imran and his cabinet to refrain from using the Riyasat-e-Madinah name for their political purposes. He accused the federal government of making laws for only Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where the PTI was in power.

In principle, Pakistan should come off the FATF grey list: FM Qureshi

Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi
Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Friday that Pakistan "should, in principle, be taken off the grey list" as it has made considerable progress on the requirements of the the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

In February, Pakistan is looking to get off FATF's 'grey list', on which it was placed in 2018 after the body decided that the country had failed to take enough measures to curb money laundering and terror financing.

In October last year, the FATF had reviewed the measures that Islamabad had already taken to control money laundering and terror financing. However, the meeting observed that Islamabad will have to take further steps in this direction and decided to hold a review of its decision in February this year.

Speaking in Multan, Qureshi said that in the recent FATF meeting in Beijing, "Pakistan presented its point of view. We presented all of the practical steps we have taken in the past 10 months in front of the member nations. And I am delighted to say that everyone appreciated our efforts and said that the progress made in the past 10 months is more than the progress made in the last 10 years."

He said that all countries — except India — agreed that progress has been made by Pakistan.

"India, of course, disagreed. But India has never wanted for Pakistan to be taken off the grey list. In fact, it wants Pakistan to be added to the blacklist," Qureshi said.

"With this response in view, I hope that all the other FATF members, will keep the issue from getting politicised in the upcoming February meeting in France.

"Pakistan's image is being enhanced with other countries, as was evident though Prime Minister Imran's various exchanges with world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos. On the other hand, The Economist a top international publication has used the word 'intolerant' with India's name in their cover story.

"As you can see, on the international front, Pakistan's image is getting better while questions are being raised about India," the foreign minister said. He also mentioned that the United Kingdom's decision to soften its travel advisory for Pakistan is a huge step forward in making the country a tourist attraction.

"Japan had already done this [improve its advisory]. The United Nations has also termed Pakistan a family-friendly country. With these improvements, we will see Pakistan emerge as a top tourist spot in the year 2020," Qureshi said.

Some of the victims belonged to the same family, he added.

Rot am See is located about 170 kilometres (105 miles) northwest of Munich.

Balochistan Assembly speaker submits privilege motion against CM, own party lawmakers

Balochistan Assembly Speaker Abdul Quddus Bizenjo and Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan
Balochistan Assembly Speaker Abdul Quddus Bizenjo submitted a privilege motion on Friday against his party members, including Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan, provincial Finance Minister Zahoor Buledi and Senator Sarfaraz Bugti.

Bizenjo stated in the motion that the chief minister’s remarks about him were unnecessary and had hurt him. He said that almost all members of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) were unhappy with the government, calling for the formation of another one that consisted of all parties.

“Tabdeeli [change] will come in Balochistan,” he said. “A government comprising all political parties should be formed in the province.”

The speaker said that he would try to bring about a change from the party within. “The party is not finished,” he said, saying that a name for the candidate of chief minister will be finalized at the appropriate time.

“Chief Minister Jam Kamal is a nice man but he cannot take decisions,” he said. “This is the worst government in the history of Balochistan.”

He said the chief minister was a member of the party, not its owner. “How can someone who is unable to run a political party, manage the affairs of a province?” he asked.

The BAP emerged as the single largest party in Balochistan after General Elections 2018, securing 15 seats out of the 51 general constituencies where polls were contested.

It also emerged as a surprise factor in last year's FATA elections where a string of independent candidates from the tribal areas joined the party after winning elections.

UK eases travel advisory amid 'improving security situation in Pakistan'

UK eases travel advisory amid 'improving security situation in Pakistan'
The United Kingdom has eased its travel advisory for British nationals owing to the "improving security situation in Pakistan" after almost five years, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) announced on Friday.

In a statement following a "wide-ranging assessment" of Pakistan's security situation, the FCO said British nationals could now "travel by road to the North of Pakistan as well as the Kalesh and Bamboret Valleys".

In this regard, the British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Dr Christian Turner, said: "It is great credit to the hard work of the Government of Pakistan in delivering improved security over the past five years.

"I am delighted that British nationals will be able to see more of what Pakistan has to offer," Dr Turner added.

The statement also cited the long-awaited return of British Airways' flights to Pakistan back in June 2019, as well as the visit of UK Royals — Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge — to various towns and cities in the country in October 2019.

"The new travel advice for Pakistan reduces the section of the Karakoram Highway where the FCO advises against all travel to the area between Mansehra and Chilas alone (previous travel advice covered the full route from Islamabad to Gilgit). Travellers may bypass this section by taking the alternative route through the Kaghan Valley and Babusar Pass," it added.

"The FCO no longer advises against all but essential travel to the Kalesh and Bamboret Valleys.

"The FCO advises against all travel to most of Balochistan including the city of Quetta. This is except for the southern coast of Balochistan, including the city of Gwadar, where the FCO advises against all but essential travel," it noted.

Two years ago, in 2018, British nationals visited Pakistan some 484,000 times, while, as of now, 22 flights directly go to the UK every week.

Govt rejects Transparency International’s ‘biased’ report on corruption

Govt rejects Transparency International’s ‘biased’ report on corruption
The PTI government on Friday rejected the report by Transparency International, issued a day earlier, which revealed that corruption increased in Pakistan in 2019, compared to the preceding year.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Special Assistant to PM on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan said: “There is a huge question mark over the transparency of TI. It is necessary to expose the people and the data, on the basis of which this report was published, in front of the public.

According to global watchdog’s 2019 Corruption Perception Index (CPI), the government was unable to curb malpractices since the year before. In 2018’s report, Pakistan ranked 117 with a score of 33. However, in 2019, Pakistan was ranked 120th out of 180, with a score of 32 out of 100, meaning that corruption has slightly increased.

During the presser, Awan said: “It is our fault that we did not fawn over the head of TI’s Pakistan chapter and allowed him to retire after the expiry of his term.” This is contrary to what the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) did which explains why the reports during their term were so favorable, she added.

“Who will respect the findings of a report that says the most amount of corruption was done during the government of Gen Pervez Musharraf, followed by Imran Khan’s government and then by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), placing the PML-N government at the very bottom?

“The findings of the report are laugh-worthy. The clean chit given to the ‘corruption kings’ who are currently under trial in the country’s courts makes it evident that the report is not fair, fair or transparent.

The PM’s aide maintained that those who have fled the country are trying to spread ill will among the people the prime minister has chosen to lead the fight against corruption.

“Prime Minister Imran Khan is adamant about fulfilling the mandate given to him by the people. We will keep on working to provide the people with a country free of corruption.

“‘Corruption kings’ are using this report as a tool to hide their sins, but they will be disappointed. Moody’s and other international agencies have not only recognised an improvement in the country’s economic indicators but have also appreciated the efforts being taken by the government.”

In an address to a conference on quality standards of the Armed Forces, held in Tehran , General Hatami said Iran possesses all the components of power and the necessary determination to respond to any act of aggression.

He also described Iran’s recent missile attack on a US military airbase in Iraq, carried out in retaliation for the American assassination of top Iranian commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, as meeting a public demand, saying the US would have become ruder and repeated its criminal acts if such a missile attack had not taken place.

“The hard slap in the face from the (Iranian) Armed Forces in targeting the Americans’ base was given at the highest level of standards in terms of the timing, quality and accuracy of the missiles in pin-point targeting,” the minister said.

On January 8, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) launched a missile attack on Ain al-Assad airbase in Iraq’s western province of Anbar, in retaliation for the US assassination of Lt. General Soleimani.

Fifteen missiles rained down on the American base, none of which were intercepted by the US army’s radar systems.

Queen gives assent for Britain to leave EU

Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II gave her formal assent on Thursday for Britain to end its decades-long involvement in the European Union and seek a more independent but uncertain future at the end of the month.

The head of state's ceremonial approval of the withdrawal legislation allows Britain to leave its closest neighbours and trading partners after years of bickering and three delays.

Two top EU officials in Brussels are expected to sign the separation treaty on Friday and Prime Minister Boris Johnson — the pro-Brexit figurehead of Britain's seismic 2016 referendum — will put his name on it in the coming days.

“At times it felt like we would never cross the Brexit finish line, but we've done it,” Johnson said after both houses of the British parliament ratified the withdrawal bill on Wednesday.

“Now we can put the rancour and division of the past three years behind us and focus on delivering a bright, exciting future.”

The January 31 split caps a remarkable political comeback for Johnson at one of the most difficult points in Britain's post-war history.

He quit former prime minister Theresa May's government in 2018 in protest at what he viewed as her pro-European separation terms.

Johnson returned as May's successor in July last year and has since managed to negotiate his own deal with Brussels and regain the government's control of parliament in a risky early election last month.

The rest was a formality. Lawmakers barely debated the withdrawal agreement before passing it — even though critics called it worse for Britain than the one reached by May.

Johnson will celebrate his victory by issuing commemorative coins and chairing a special cabinet meeting in England's pro-Brexit north on January 31.

Johnson will now be responsible for defining the terms on which Britain trades and shares everything from data to fishing waters with the remaining 27 EU member states.

The formal talks are not expected to begin until March but the war of words is already intense.

Johnson rejects EU arguments that the end-of-year negotiations deadline is too short to reach a comprehensive deal.

The UK government is also demanding the post-Brexit right to set its own rules on politically sensitive issues such as environmental standards and workers' rights.

EU officials say this will give Britain an unfair advantage and are threatening to retaliate with tariffs and quotas that could hit the UK auto and pharmaceutical industries especially hard.

European Central Bank chief Christine Lagarde said the bloc's financial system was ready for the next stage.

“There can always be a risk somewhere,” she said in Frankfurt. “But I think in good conscience we have covered everything that we thought was necessary.” Some analysts believe Johnson is prepared to pay the price of short-term economic damage in order to deliver on pledge to “get Brexit done”.

He argues that greater flexibility will help him reach a quick post-Brexit agreement with the United States and other nations that are growing much faster than those in Europe.

US officials say they are eager to strike a deal with Johnson.

An agreement “is an absolute priority for President (Donald) Trump and we expect to complete that with them this year,” US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said ahead of his arrival in London this weekend.

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross added that Johnson would have an easier time with Washington than Brussels because “there are far fewer issues between the UK and US.” Johnson is expected to lay out his vision for the post-Brexit agreement with Brussels in a big policy address early next month.

“Once we have left the EU in just over a week's time we'll be free to start having discussions with countries around the world including the US,” Downing Street said on Wednesday.

World Court orders Myanmar to take steps to protect Rohingya

World Court orders Myanmar to take steps to protect Rohingya
The International Court of Justice on Thursday ordered Myanmar to take urgent measures to protect its Muslim Rohingya population from persecution and atrocities, and preserve evidence of alleged crimes against them.

Mostly Muslim Gambia launched a lawsuit in November at the United Nations’ highest body for disputes between states, accusing Myanmar of genocide against Rohingya in violation of a 1948 convention.

Thursday’s ruling dealt only with Gambia’s request for so-called preliminary measures, the equivalent of a restraining order for states. While the court’s final decision could take years to reach, the 17 judge panel made clear in a unanimous ruling that the court believes the Rohingya are in danger now, and steps must be taken to protect them.

The Rohingya remain “at serious risk of genocide,” presiding Judge Abdulqawi Yusuf said, reading a summary the decision. Myanmar shall “take all measures within its power to prevent all acts” prohibited under the 1948 Genocide Convention, the ruling said. Myanmar must report back within four months.

It ordered the government of Myanmar to exercise influence over its military and other armed groups to prevent “killing members of the group, causing serious bodily or mental harm to the members of the group, deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life intended to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.”

More than 730,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar after a military-led crackdown in 2017, and were forced into squalid camps across the border in Bangladesh. U.N. investigators concluded that the military campaign had been executed with “genocidal intent”.

Moments before the court in The Hague began reading its ruling, the Financial Times published an article by Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in which she said war crimes may have been committed against Rohingya Muslims but that refugees had exaggerated the abuses against them.

During a week of hearings last month, Suu Kyi, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, had asked the judges to drop the case.

The World Court’s rulings are final and without appeal, although it has no real way of enforcing them.

“The court is of the opinion that the Rohingya in Myanmar remain extremely vulnerable,” said Yusuf, the presiding judge.

“Moreover, the court is of the opinion that the steps which [Myanmar] claimed to have taken to facilitate the return of Rohingya refugees present in Bangladesh, to promote ethnic reconciliation, peace and stability in Rakhine State, and to make its military accountable for violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, do not appear sufficient.”

More than 100 Myanmar civil society groups published a statement saying they hoped international justice efforts would “bring forth the truth” and end impunity.

“Political and military policies have always been imposed with violent force and intimidation upon the people of Myanmar, systematically and institutionally, on the basis of their political and religious beliefs and ethnic identities and continue until the present,” the statement said.

“We understand very clearly that the ICJ case against Myanmar is directed toward those responsible for using political power and military might, and not to the people of Myanmar.”

Reforming a sick economy a painful process: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Thursday that reforming an economy which is "sick" is a painful process.

Speaking at the Pakistan Breakfast Meet in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday, Imran said his government had done remarkably well during its first year.

"In the first year we reduced our current account deficit by 75 per cent, which I think is a great achievement, and this is reflected in the stabilisation of the rupee, the stock market and in foreign investment.

"We are headed in the right direction, but struggle lies ahead. However, I am an optimist and I see good times ahead for Pakistan."

Commenting on the shortcomings of previous governments, the prime minister said that in the past, the country neglected its most important asset – its people.

"We need to return to making Pakistan an inclusive state [with] inclusive development. Our whole idea is to now become the second government since the 60s to spend money on industrialisation.

"We are focusing on promoting industrialisation so that we can create wealth which can then be spent on [uplifting] the bottom tier of society," he said.

Referring to his government's social welfare measure known as the Ehsaas Programme, Imran said: "We have the most ambitious poverty alleviation programme and, in very difficult times, have allocated Rs190 billion for this endeavour.

"My belief is that if we can concentrate on the bottom section of our society, facilitate investors and industrialists while making it easy for them to do business, and improve our governance system, we can release the [untapped] potential of Pakistan."

The prime minister maintained that when he read a blog by Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, he discovered that there were a lot of similarities between the challenges the two countries face.

"He [Mahathir] had said that the biggest challenge for Malaysia was an entrenched corrupt status quo, the same is with us. We are up against a corrupt status quo which ruled Pakistan for 30 years. They do not want us to succeed because the government succeeding means they will be out of power and end up in jail."

Continuing, the prime minister said that Pakistan's state institutions were deteriorating. "The first thing that the corrupt do is destroy state institutions because that's the only way they can make money. That is another big problem we face. But, we are slowly trying to restore them, institution by institution.

"Another problem the country faces is the accumulation of huge debts by the previous government. How do you fund health and education after you are left with a small amount [after paying your debts]?

"But the biggest challenge is perhaps the energy sector, we have this huge, huge circular debt in electricity. We have decided to get together with stakeholders [to find a solution] because we cannot put more burden on the consumers," the prime minister said.

Commenting on the lessons he learnt from his career as a cricketer, Imran said that playing sports, you learn the most difficult lessons.

"However, what I took away was to never lose your head when you are going up and to learn how to face the bad times.

"An easy comfortable life is a disaster for potential," said the prime minister, adding that when he went to the most prestigious cricket academy, the students at the institute had nothing on the boys who would play in the streets.

"You need to have the motivation and the hunger."

Giving the example of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital, Imran said that when he first envisioned the institute, people had laughed in his face.

"Out of a panel of the country's top 20 doctors, 19 told me that I will never be able to complete this hospital and the remaining one said that you cannot give such expensive treatment to the people free-of-cost.

"For 15 years people laughed at me and I was the butt of all jokes in Pakistan. But the bigger the dream, the bigger the struggle."

Angela Merkel invites PM Imran to visit Germany

Angela Merkel invites PM Imran to visit Germany
Prime Minister Imran Khan had a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on the sidelines of World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos here on Thursday.

During the meeting, Angela Merkel invited Prime Minister Imran Khan to visit Germany.

Yesterday, Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook called on Prime Minister Imran Khan at Davos, on the sidelines of WEF Annual Meeting 2020.

During the meeting, Facebook’s COO invited PM Imran Khan to visit the headquarters of US-based company.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Imran Khan has stressed the need for dialogue to defuse tensions between the United States (US) and Iran saying any conflict between the two countries would be disastrous for the entire region.

“It would be a disaster if this conflict takes place between the US and Iran. Look at Afghanistan.. it has almost been 19 years and we are still finding a solution, still trying to get peace talks and ceasefire going, and still people are dying in Afghanistan despite spending trillions of dollars,” he said in an interview to an American TV channel on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

“Does the US want another conflict,” PM Imran Khan questioned, cautioning that the conflict with Iran would be “much, much more difficult than Afghanistan.

He stressed that people should never rely on a military solution, adding when one uses the military to solve one problem, five more problems spring up.

Pakistan slips three spots on Corruption Perceptions Index

Transparency International
Pakistan was on Thursday ranked 120 out of 180 countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2019, according to a report released by Transparency International (TI), an international non-governmental organization based in Berlin.

CPI uses a scale of 0 to 100 to rank nations, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean. Pakistan's score — 32/100 — is one below its score last year and well below the CPI average of 43 for the year 2019. However, TI said that more than two-thirds of countries on its list scored below 50 on the index this year.

The Berlin-based non-profit releases the index every year, ranking 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and business people. Pakistan was ranked at the 117th place for the years 2017 and 2018.

The country had scored 33/100 on the CPI in 2018 and 32/100 in 2017. Although Pakistan's score on the index has not changed much compared to the past year, changes in the scores of other countries on the list can be one reason why Pakistan slipped in the ranking.

According to Transparency International, the CPI 2019 shows that corruption is more pervasive in countries where big money can flow freely into electoral campaigns and where governments listen only to the voices of wealthy or well-connected individuals.

"Similar to previous years, the data shows that despite some progress, a majority of countries are still failing to tackle public sector corruption effectively," the non-profit contends in the report, adding that in the last eight years, only 22 countries significantly improved their CPI scores.

"Governments must urgently address the corrupting role of big money in political party financing and the undue influence it exerts on our political systems," says Transparency International chief Delia Ferreira Rubio.

TI Managing Director Patricia Moreira also echoed the same comments. "To have any chance of ending corruption and improving peoples’ lives, we must tackle the relationship between politics and big money. All citizens must be represented in decision-making," she said.

Pakistan was ranked 120 on the CPI this year, joint with African nation Niger, but above regional partners like Afghanistan (173), Iran (146) and Bangladesh (146). Neighbour and arch-rival India was ranked at the 80th place, scoring 41/100 on the CPI, according to TI.

The top countries on the index were New Zealand and Denmark, with scores of 87 each, followed by Finland (86), Singapore (85), Sweden (85) and Switzerland (85). The bottom countries were Somalia, South Sudan and Syria, with scores of 9, 12 and 13, respectively.

In the index, Pakistan was placed in the Asia-Pacific region, which had an average CPI score of 45 after many consecutive years of an average score of 44, illustrating general stagnation across the region. The region is home to both top-performing and bottom-listed countries on the CPI.

"While often seen as an engine of the global economy, in terms of political integrity and governance, the region performs only marginally better than the global average," the non-profit said, adding that the region hasn't recorded much progress in anti-corruption efforts.

According to Transparency International, it is imperative to prevent corruption in order to foster the integrity of political systems around the world. This will restore trust, and lead to a decrease in the perceived levels of corruption prevalent in several countries, the group said.

In line with the statement, the group also identified several key areas that governments around the globe could concentrate on reforming and thus decreasing corruption in their societies. The recommendations were part of the report the group released on Thursday.

TI said that by managing conflicts of interest, controlling political financing, strengthening electoral integrity, regulating lobbying activities, tackling preferential treatment, empowering citizens, and reinforcing checks and balances, states could fight corruption and defeat it.

India's recent steps reflect its unilateralism on Kashmir issue: FM Qureshi

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi
Prime Minister Imran has decided to start a new campaign that will highlight the issue of occupied Kashmir so that ground realities of the Indian-held territory are shown to the world, said Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Thursday.

The foreign minister was holding a press conference during which he announced that PM Imran had decided to kickstart a new campaign to denounce Indian aggression in occupied Kashmir.

India and Pakistan have been at loggerheads ever since New Delhi decided to illegally annex the occupied territory by scrapping Article 370 of the Indian constitution which recognised the valley as a special territory.

FM Qureshi said every fundamental right was being denied to the masses in occupied Kashmir and that Indian policies were reflective of its growing "unilateralism" on the issue of occupied Kashmir.

The foreign minister is addressing a press conference with federal minister Murad Saeed and the prime minister's adviser Firdous Ashiq Awan. Qureshi said that as per the Simla Agreement, India and Pakistan were supposed to hold bilateral talks on Kashmir.

"However, as you have seen, their focus is more towards unilateralism than bilateral talks," he said. "India's recent steps and the one taken on August 5 reflects their [India's] unilateralism," he added.

FM Qureshi said that Pakistan was successful in its efforts to highlight the issue of occupied Kashmir at the UN Security Council despite Indian efforts to ensure otherwise.

"Two briefings on the Kashmir issue were held [at the Security Council] and their summary was that whatever Pakistan was saying [about Indian atrocities] carries weight," he said.

The foreign minister said PM Imran had told President Trump during their meeting at Davos about the adverse effects of a confrontation between two nuclear powers. He said the prime minister had informed the US president about the "complexities" of the Kashmir issue and urged Trump and the UN to intervene for a solution.

"The prime minister was very clear, he did not mince any words," he said, referring to PM Imran's meeting with Trump in which the two global leaders discussed the Kashmir issue. "PM Imran informed him about the dangers that the world faced if two nuclear powers confronted each other."

Kashmir is far more serious problem than people and world realizes: PM
Prime Minister Imran Khan has once again called upon US President Donald Trump and the United Nations to intervene for resolution of outstanding Kashmir dispute.

In an interview with CNBC, he said Kashmir is a far more serious problem than the people and the world realizes.

He said India has been taken over by an extremist ideology which is called Hindutva or the RSS.

He said Modi is a life member of this extremist outfit.

Referring to the situation in occupied Kashmir, he said eight million people have been put under siege there since 5th August last year.

The Indian forces have picked up thousands of Kashmiri teenagers and arrested all their political leaders.

He said it is a serious situation and warned that this could potentially spill over into a conflict between the two nuclear armed countries.

When asked US- Iran tension, the Prime Minister said war is not a solution to any problem.

He warned that a conflict with Iran will be disastrous for the developing countries as it will shoot up the oil prices. He said the sensible way forward is dialogue.

The Prime Minister made it clear that Pakistan will only be partner in peace. He reminded that Pakistan suffered heavily both in terms of human and material losses in the war on terrorism.

Imran Khan said Pakistan is now a safe country and ready for business. Hailing the sacrifices rendered by security forces in the war on terrorism, he said Pakistan has disarmed the militias and rehabilitated them.

Responding to a question, the Prime Minister rejected the impression that the CPEC has made Pakistan indebted to China.

He pointed out that the Chinese loans only account for five or six per cent of Pakistan's total loan portfolio.

He said China helped Pakistan in the most difficult times by making investments and we are grateful to them.

He said the CPEC also envisages cooperation in different sectors including technology transfer in the agriculture sector.

About Pakistan's economy, the Prime Minister said the country is now on the right track and our focus is on export led growth by promoting industrialization.

Oil prices fall for third day over China virus

Oil prices fell to their lowest in seven weeks
Oil prices fell to their lowest in seven weeks on Thursday on concerns that the spread of a newly identified respiratory virus from China may lower fuel demand at the same time a report showed oil inventories in the United States rose last week.

The so-called novel coronavirus has killed 17 people because of respiratory illness since it emerged late last year in the Chinese city of Wuhan. The potential for a pandemic has stirred memories of the Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic in 2002-2003, which also started in China, and dented economic growth and led to a slump in travel.

Brent crude futures LCOc1 were down $1.05, or 1.7%, to $62.16 a barrel by 0125 GMT, and earlier dropped to the lowest since Dec. 4, after falling 2.1% the previous session.

US West Texas Intermediate futures CLc1 fell 95 cents, or 1.7%, to $55.78 a barrel after earlier falling to the lowest since Dec. 3. The contract declined 2.7% on Wednesday.

More than 540 cases of the new virus have been confirmed and authorities in Wuhan have shut transportation networks and are urging residents not to leave to help prevent the contagion spreading.

“We estimate a price shock of up to $5 (a barrel) if the crisis develops into a SARS style epidemic based on historical oil price movements,” JPM Commodities Research said in a note.

The US bank maintained its forecasts for Brent to average $67 a barrel in the first quarter and $64.50 a barrel throughout 2020.

'Mere Paas Tum Ho':Young actress regrets doing Khalil-ur-Rehman’s drama

Emerging Pakistani actor Rehmat Ajmal
Emerging Pakistani actor Rehmat Ajmal, known popularly for her role in the hit drama serial Mere Paas Tum Ho, came forth on Wednesday making some startling revelations about how she feels being part of the show and it’s writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar.

Turning to Instagram, the model-turned-actor, penned an extensive note, detailing her thoughts on being part of the contentious serial penned by a writer who recurrently faces flak over his ‘misogynistic’ views.

“I understand that we as artists have a social responsibility in terms of the content we produce and the messages we put forward - & that I take that responsibility with a lot of seriousness and dignity,” she said.

“I’ve been receiving a lot of concerned, hateful and confused messages since the past few months and as much as I want to address them individually, I think I’ll just give an overview of my perspective for now,” she continued.

“I absolutely do not endorse the concepts and viewpoints of Mr. Khalil Ul Rehman. I watched Khalil ul Rehman’s interview and got to know about his problematic views on very many things WAY after the project was completed.

“I am not proud to be a part of something that is so compromising and ill-informed. However, I (like many others) was not aware of the entire story line or Mr. Khalil ul Rehman’s ideology at the time this project was shot - which was a year ago.

“My role in this project is limited so, I did not get a chance to see how it’ll come together or how it’ll eventually unroll on television and that is where I think I slipped a little. It was my first ever telecom project and I am learning - I have learnt to be cautious and more conscious with my creative choices.”

She concluded the note by saying: “Please extend new, struggling artists some leeway as we are in the process of learning - we are also trying very hard to make our own mark solely based on our merit.”

Shoaib Malik says focussed on Bangladesh series, not T20 World Cup

Shoaib Malik
The most capped player in Twenty20 international cricket doesn’t want to think about this year’s T20 World Cup because he wants to focus on performing well for Pakistan in his comeback series against Bangladesh.

The 37-year-old Shoaib Malik, who has played 111 T20s, has been recalled for the three-match series starting Friday. He last played for Pakistan against South Africa early last year. India’s Rohit Sharma (104) is the only other player with more than 100 T20 international appearances.

“My selection is for the Bangladesh series and I will try to avail whatever opportunity I get,” Malik said while speaking to reporters at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday. “World Cup is too far, and I don’t set long-term goals.

“There are lots of youngsters in the team and they should be groomed — that’s my priority. I don’t want to focus on the World Cup because it is too far.”

The selectors made a selection U-turn and recalled Malik and 39-year-old Mohammad Hafeez to take on Bangladesh after Pakistan could win only one out of their nine completed T20s last year. The heavy defeats included being swept 3-0 by a second-string Sri Lanka squad at Lahore late last year and a 2-0 loss in Australia.

Malik has scored 2,263 runs in T20 internationals at an average of 30.58 and has taken 28 wickets. He quit Test cricket in 2015 as he wanted to focus on the 50-over World Cup in 2019. He retired from ODI cricket after that.

But Malik continued to press for his national recall in the T20 squad as he performed well in the domestic leagues in Canada, the West Indies and Bangladesh.

“Whenever I do get an opportunity, I play in the leagues around the world,” Malik said. “The goal should be how to give your best shot wherever you play, so it’s another opportunity for me (to play for Pakistan) and I will try to give my best shot.”

Malik’s recent experience playing in the Bangladesh Premier League could be handy for Pakistan. He scored 455 runs in 15 matches at an average of 37.91 for eventual champions Rajshahi Royals.

Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim pulled out of the tour citing security concerns, but Malik hoped next time the wicketkeeper-batsman will come to Pakistan after getting positive feedback from his teammates.

The government will deploy heavy security around Gaddafi Stadium and team hotels, as it has for other tours since the decade-long absence of international cricket ended last year.

“Only one (Bangladesh player) is not coming because of personal reasons,” Malik said. “I just like to request him that you are not coming this time, but next time please do come and see for yourself.”

The three matches will be played at Lahore on Friday, Saturday and Monday.

US President Trump to visit Pakistan soon: Qureshi

Prime Minister Imran Khan and US president Donald Trump
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Wednesday said that United States President Donald Trump had assured the Pakistani delegation at the World Economic Forum in Davos that he would soon visit Pakistan.

"US President Donald Trump has assured us that he will soon visit Pakistan," the foreign minister said in a statement issued hours after a meeting between Prime Minister Imran Khan and the US President on the sidelines of the WEF.

"I was present at the meeting between PM Imran and US President Trump. It lasted for one hour and was very productive," FM Qureshi said, adding that the meeting was conducted in a cordial manner and a full delegation from the US was present on the occasion.

"PM Imran raised all important issues before the US President, including a request to support Pakistan at the Financial Action Task Force and improving the travel advisory the US issues for Pakistan," Qureshi remarked in his statement.

FM Qureshi further noted that trade and investment had also come under discussions between the two leaders, and the premier and the US President had agreed that a trade delegation from the US would visit Pakistan soon.

The foreign minister maintained that the Kashmir issue had come under discussion during the meeting as well. "US President Trump said he was concerned about the Kashmir issue and that he would extend his help to solve the issue.

According to Qureshi, the two sides talked about the increasing tensions between the US and Iran and the impact they could have on the region. "The two leaders talked about the onoging Afghan peace talks too," he said.

After his meeting with PM Imran, US President Trump had reiterated his long-standing offer to mediate on the occupied Kashmir dispute between Pakistan and India while answering questions from journalists.

Pakistan on path to growth after tough economic period: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday addressed a special session of the World Economic Forum annual meeting, which is taking place in Davos, Switzerland.

The premier began his speech by talking about his government's tree plantation campaign, which he said was expanded across the country after seeing its success in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He said the government aims to plant 10 billion trees in the next four years to deal with the consequences of climate change.

Prime Minister Imran said forestation was crucial because not only is Pakistan vulnerable to global warming but because pollution has become a "silent killer" in cities across the country.

Recounting how militancy took root in Pakistan since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the premier said: "You cannot make your economy grow unless and until there is peace and stability."

He said his government had decided upon coming into power that, "From now onwards Pakistan will only partner another country in peace. We will not become part of any other conflict."

To further that policy, he said Pakistan has tried to ease tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia as well as Iran and the United States. In addition "it is the nearest we are to some sort of a peaceful solution in Afghanistan", the prime minister said.

Recalling that his government had inherited the "worst economic crisis" in the country's history, Prime Minister Imran said he has never had to face the kind of "public attitude" that he encountered in the last one year due to the tough economic decisions taken by the government.

"People are hurting. We have gone through this very tough period," he said, adding that the economy has now been stabilised. "This year we are looking towards economic growth."

He said Pakistan's top advantage is its youthful population but regretted that "we have neglected this young population because we did not concentrate on skill development [and] equipping them to become entrepreneurs." He noted that the government has now launched a programme for skills development and made funds available for startups.

Another advantage that Pakistan has is its "untapped" mineral wealth, Prime Minister Imran said, adding that the government's attention is now on developing these resources.

Talking about Pakistan's strategic location, the premier highlighted the trade potential among the regional countries. "The moment Pakistan and India's relationship becomes normal and trade starts between the two countries", immense opportunities for growth will emerge, he said.

Prime Minister Imran said Pakistan has not been able to fulfil its potential because of the way governance deteriorated in the country. "From now on my government's biggest challenge is how we can improve our state institutions so we can improve our governance so we can tap our potential," he told the audience.

Prime Minister Imran earlier on Wednesday said that although Pakistan and India are currently not close to engaging in an all-out conflict, international powers including the United Nations and United States "must act" to prevent tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries from reaching a point of no return.

Speaking during an interview with the International Media Council on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, the premier said he fears that India might attempt to raise tensions at the border in order to divert attention from domestic protests against two government measures that have been criticised as anti-Muslim.

"You cannot have two nuclear-armed countries even contemplating a conflict," he said, adding that it for this reason that the UN and US must take steps. He also demanded that UN observers be allowed along the Line of Control.

The prime minister recalled that he "came across a brick wall" when he reached out to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after assuming office in 2018, and the relationship deteriorated with India sending fighters jets into Pakistani territory in retaliation for the Pulwama attack in occupied Kashmir.

But "things went from bad to worse" when New Delhi unilaterally annexed occupied Kashmir in August last year, he said, terming the existing state of affairs in India a "disaster" for the people of India and occupied Kashmir.

"I just think that the path which India is going [on] is a disaster for India."

Answering a question, Prime Minister Imran said the close relationship between India and the US was "understandable" because of the former being a huge market for the latter. But he said his main concern is the "direction" in which India is going and that the sequence of events taking place in India bears "striking resemblance" to Nazi Germany.

No Pakistan-India conflict imminent but international powers 'must act': PM Imran
