French 'yellow vests' spark copycats and fakes abroad

French 'yellow vests' spark copycats and fakes abroad
The "yellow vest" revolt in France over the high cost of living has sparked copycat protests abroad 1 as well a swarm of fake reports.

The month-long French demonstrations, which have led to repeated rioting in Paris, have inspired protesters in a number of mostly European countries.

On December 8, some 400 people were detained in Brussels after protesters wearing high-visibility fluorescent vests briefly clashed with police.

Others reportedly blocked a highway linking Brussels to the town of Rekkem in Flanders, near the French border to protest high taxes.

On the same day in the Netherlands, "yellow vests" turned out in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and the Hague to protest the high cost of living, but they were few in number and the demonstrations were peaceful.

In Hungary, some of those protesting a new law, which increases the amount of overtime employers can require of workers, also dressed up in yellow vests on December 12 outside parliament.

And in Poland, farmers wearing the distinctive jackets on Wednesday blocked a motorway to demand government compensation for a swine flu outbreak.

In Germany, both Alice Weidel, one of the founders of the right-wing Alternative for Germany party, and the radical left-wing Die Linke party have expressed support for the French movement.

And some yellow vests were seen among a 1,000-strong crowd of right-wing demonstrators when the Pegida anti-migrant movement when it held a rally on December 1 in Berlin.

In Belgrade, a handful of opposition members of parliament also donned yellow on December 4 to protest petrol price increases.

In South Africa, where some protesters have been spotted wearing yellow vests during demonstrations against the low quality of public services, the Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) spoke out in favour of the French movement, saying it was a model for future protests.

The French movement kicked off on November 17 over higher fuel taxes, but quickly morphed into a nationwide grassroot protest against the high cost of living and the government.

President Emmanuel Macron has since offered tax and wage concessions in a bid to end the protest.

Worried governments

In Egypt, authorities fearing possible protests on the anniversary of the uprising that toppled Egypt's longtime president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, have sought to restrict the sale of yellow vests.

"We received instructions from the police around a week ago to sell yellow vests to companies only, and not to individuals," one importer said.

And a human rights lawyer, Mohamed Ramadan, was remanded in custody earlier this month over charges including the distribution and possession of leaflets and yellow vests.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, for his part, defended the jailing of an elderly rights activist over calls to protest, stressing he wanted to prevent events like France's "yellow vest" revolt.

Fake yellow news

But not every sighting of a high-visibility jacket should be seen as political.

Many social media accounts wrongly reported on Monday that German rail workers, who held a one-day strike for higher pay, wore yellow vests in solidarity with the French.

The vests are mandatory to ensure they are visible when on the railway tracks.

Other reports were pure fakes.

An internet platform, 24jours.com, published a photograph showing 300 motorcyclists in yellow vests purportedly demonstrating in the capital of the Central African Republic against "the French neo-colonial system" and against the local French-linked currency.

The picture was in fact taken in May when motorcyclists in Bangui attended a first aid training clinic.

Maldives court freezes ex-president Yameen's bank accounts

Abdulla Yameen
A court in the Maldives has frozen bank accounts owned by former President Abdulla Yameen, two sources told Al Jazeera on Friday, as part of an investigation into allegations of financial fraud.

Yameen, who suffered a decisive defeat in a presidential election in September, has also been summoned to the police headquarters on Saturday, according to officials.

He is expected to be questioned over allegations that he received 22 million rufiyaa ($1.5m) in cash as campaign funds days before the contentious vote, said Ahmed Nihan, a senior legislator from the former president's party.

Yameen's accounts at the national Bank of Maldives and the privately owned Maldives Islamic Bank were frozen over the same case, a senior official who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Al Jazeera.

Nihan confirmed the freeze on the president's accounts but declined to elaborate further.

"President Yameen told us he expects to be questioned, arrested and even jailed, but he says there is no truth to any of the claims against him," he said.

In September, the Financial Intelligence Unit, an anti-money laundering body, sent a classified letter to the police, suggesting the transactions from the former president's accounts violate Maldives' elections laws, which require candidates to set up separate accounts for and declare the source of campaign funds.

The police declined to comment on the freeze on Yameen's accounts.

But spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said the police were "investigating allegations forwarded by state institutions that former President Abdulla Yameen conducted illicit financial transactions while he was president".

'No reasons for my arrest'

Earlier this month, the 59-year-old opposition leader denied any wrongdoing while in office and told reporters there was "no reasons at all" for his arrest.

Associates of Yameen, who unsuccessfully tried to annul the results of September's election, have previously blamed his defeat to opposition candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, in the September 23 poll on "relentless accusations of theft".

Solih took office in November, vowing to end systematic corruption and investigate allegations of human rights abuses under Yameen. The new president has since set up two powerful commissions to probe such cases, saying the Maldives could not move forward without justice for past abuses.

The most serious of the allegations against Yameen include claims he oversaw the country's biggest-ever corruption scandal, in which at least $79m from tourism revenues was diverted to private accounts and cashed out.

The scheme, which involved the state-owned Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), was the subject of the 2016 Al Jazeera investigation Stealing Paradise.

Associates of the former president, in secretly filmed interviews, said they delivered some of the stolen cash to his residence in black bags.

Yameen is also accused of receiving at least $1m of the embezzled money into his private account at the Maldives Islamic Bank.

The Anti-Corruption Commission has confirmed that Yameen received that money, but said it shelved the investigation because it could not reach the person who deposited the cash.

Yameen, who rejects all allegations of corruption, blamed his former deputy, Ahmed Adeeb, for the theft from the MMPRC.

In an interview on national television in September, Yameen also blamed the central bank and commercial banks for the MMPRC scandal, saying the staff there did not raise red flags when tens of millions of dollars in public money was diverted to private accounts.

Rajapakse bows out, ending Sri Lanka power struggle

Mahinda Rajapakse
Sri Lanka's crisis looked over on Saturday as strongman Mahinda Rajapakse bowed out of a power battle that had crippled the strategically located island for seven weeks and sent it heading for a possible debt default.

Rajapakse held a multi-religious service at his home where he signed a letter backing down from the post of prime minister controversially conferred on him in October 26.

The 73-year-old ex-president made no immediate statement to reporters, but his aides said he was returning a fleet of limousines he had used since his disputed appointment.

President Maithripala Sirisena triggered the political turmoil by sacking premier Ranil Wickremesinghe and replacing him with his flamboyant former foe Rajapakse.

But Wickremesinghe refused to step down insisting that his sacking was illegal, leaving the Indian Ocean nation of 21 million people with two men claiming the premiership.

Rajapakse was then defeated in a no-confidence motion on November 14.

However, the following day, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya ruled that he would recognise neither man as prime minister, leaving Sri Lanka effectively without a government.

The country was then heading for a government shutdown as parliament failed to approve spending for 2019 and credit rating agencies downgraded its debt amid fears of default.

Rajapakse's son Namal had announced Friday that his father – who as president ended Sri Lanka's civil war in 2009 amid allegations of grave rights abuses – would throw in the towel "to ensure stability".

Rajapakse´s decision came after the Supreme Court confirmed that he could not exercise the powers of a prime minister until he proved his legitimacy, which without enough support in parliament was impossible.

In a major climbdown, Sirisena agreed on Friday to reinstate Wickremesinghe on Sunday despite previously insisting he would never reappoint him as prime minister.

There was no immediate comment from Sirisena or his office on Saturday.

But an MP from his party, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, told reporters on Friday night that the president agreed to the latest measures to avoid a government shutdown after December 31.

"If the stalemate continued, we would have ended up without a budget for 2019 and the government would not have been able to function," Abeywardena said.

On Wednesday, the legislature had voted overwhelmingly to demand the reinstatement of Wickremesinghe.

The leftist JVP, or the People's Liberation Front, insists that Sirisena should be investigated for orchestrating what they call a coup and that there should also be an impeachment process.

On Thursday Sirisena suffered a major blow when the Supreme Court ruled that he had breached the constitution on November 9 by dissolving parliament and calling early elections.

His sacking of parliament had earlier been suspended, but the legislature descended into farce on multiple occasions with MPs throwing punches, hurling projectiles and chili powder and boycotting proceedings.

Zardari should start counting his days in politics: Fawad Chaudhry

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry
Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Saturday responded to Asif Zardari’s tirade against the government, and said that the former president should start counting his days in politics.

“Zardari is counting our 100 days. He should be counting his days in politics,” Fawad said in a statement.

The minister also mocked the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman for his comments against “those with only three-year tenure making decisions”.

Zardari early today said that only parliament can take decisions for the nation, and that "individuals with three-year terms" have no right to do so.

"What right does an individual, who has a tenure of three years, to make decisions about my nation?" the PPP-co-chairman questioned, while addressing a public gathering in Hyderabad.

"Only parliament has this right and no one else."

Without naming anyone, he said they keep visiting different places, questioning, "What does you have to do [with them]?

Fawad, responding to the statements, said that the last time Zardari gave such statements, he had to make Dubai his home for three years.

He also said that Zardari is reminded of democracy whenever there is talk of accountability.

Separately, Punjab Information Minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan that the former president is trying to target judiciary, establishment and the government to save himself from accountability.

Remembering the martyrs of APS tragedy

Devastating attack on Army Public School Peshawar
Today marks the fourth anniversary of the devastating terrorist attack on Army Public School Peshawar.

On December 16, 2014, terrorists stormed the army-run school and martyred around 150 people, including more than 130 young students. The incident shook the country and resulted in the formation of a National Action Plan to stem extremism and terrorism in the country, as well as the creation of military courts to try 'hardcore' terrorists.

A special function has been arranged at APS Peshawar today to pay homage to the martyred students and teachers. Similar functions and walks are also being held in other parts of the country in the memory of the victims.

In his message on the fourth anniversary of the tragedy, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan said the sacrifices of the students of APS Peshawar would always be remembered.

He said the tragic incident showed the brutal mindset of terrorists who targeted innocent students within the educational institution, exposing their nefarious designs against humanity, education and knowledge.

Mahmood Khan said that the incident united the entire nation to eliminate terrorism from the country.

The chief minister vowed that the provincial government would always extend a helping hand to the bereaved families. A monument had been constructed in Peshawar in the memory of the martyrs, he added.

He reminded that the government and the security institutions were on the same page to launch the national action plan for total eradication of terrorists and terrorism from the country.

The minister also paid rich tributes to the parents of the martyrs for bearing the loss with patience and fortitude.

Seven-day crisis comes to an end, as gas supplies restored in Sindh

The gas crisis at Sindh’s industries and CNG fuel stations came to an end on the seventh day.
The gas crisis at Sindh’s industries and CNG fuel stations came to an end on the seventh day, Saturday, after the federal government addressed the human errors in the supplies system.

“The slowdown in oil productions at refineries due to spillover of furnace oil reservoirs and continued imports of the oil had triggered the gas crisis,” Federal Minister for Petroleum Ghulam Sarwar Khan said at a press conference at the Governor House, Sindh, on Saturday.

He said the spillover and low productions at refineries in the country had slowed down production of crude oil and gas at Sindh fields that ultimately impacted end-consumers of the utility in the province.

He said the oil and gas production at Sindh fields and as well as at refineries would normalise in a couple of days after the federal government allowed refineries to export the surplus furnace oil and banned imports. Besides, the state-owned Pakistan State Oil (PSO) and furnace oil-based power producers have also been asked to store excess refineries’ oil at their reservoirs, he said.

The gas crisis emerged following a drop in gas production by 80mmcfd in two fields of the province.

“The production gas had dropped to 1,200mmcfd from 1,280mmcfd earlier,” he said, adding, “Gas productions from the fields would normalise in a couple of days.”

CNG pumps resume operations

He said gas supplies to CNG fuel stations will resume with effect from 8pm on Saturday, while the supplies to the captive power plants at industries would resume from Monday onwards.

CNG fuel stations would be supplied gas three days a week, while, gas volumes for captive power plants would remain low at 50% during three months of winter. “Sunday would remain a gas holiday for captive power plants (in Sindh),” he said.

“We reached the amicable solution through consensus, understanding and deliberations made with the stakeholders (government, SSGC and industrial users) during the last three days,” he added. CNG station owners confirmed resuming operations after the government restored gas supply.

“There are around 650 CNG fuel stations in the province, which consume 67-70mmcfd on the days they are in operations,” a CNG dealer informed.
Energy policy

The minister said they would never restore load-shedding of gas, power and other utilities at the five zero-rated export-based industries as they remain engine of growth in exports.

“The exports have dropped, imports have surged, factories have closed down and the unemployment has gone on high side,” Khan said.

He said the government would never compromise on services being provided to export-based industries as they remain the key towards addressing major issues in the beleaguered economy.

Besides, other industries would also be provided level playing field, he said. He said the government has set priorities of taking highest power production from hydel sources, while production from alternative energy sources (wind, solar and bhagas) has been prioritised on second number in the energy mix.

Taking power production from cheaper and clean energy LNG has been set on third priority, coal on fourth and the power from the most expensive furnace oil has been set on the last priority.

'Those with three-year tenures' cannot decide for the nation: Zardari

Pakistan People's Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari
Pakistan People's Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday said only parliament can take decisions for the nation, and that "individuals with three-year terms" have no right to do so.

"What right does an individual, who has a tenure of three years, to make decisions about my nation?" the PPP-co-chairman questioned, while addressing a public gathering here.

"Only parliament has this right and no one else."

Without naming anyone, he said they keep visiting different places, questioning, "What do you have to do [with them]?

"There have been 900,000 case pending in courts, you should look into those," Zardari said.

"You have no future, why do you decide about the future of things? I say it even today that one should act remaining with legal and constitutional bounds."

He said only parliament has the right to make decisions about the nation. "It was better that transparent elections were allowed to be held and political parties could have formed a government through consensus."

Criticising the government, he said that government functionaries say 100 days were less for them and what could they do such a short period.

"We got rid of Musharraf in 100 days, we got Swat freed in 100 days," the PPP co-chairman noted, recalling his party's tenure in the centre.

He said only a party of the masses could understand their needs and problems, not the "parties that are made."

Zardari said if he could run a government in a good way then it did not imply he could also play good cricket.

"I don't know how to play cricket. I know politics and I can do that," he said. "Politics is when Musharraf reached home and said 'I don't know what happened and how it happened'."

He suggested the government to provide opportunities to local businessmen and facilitate stock exchange, adding, "Only technology and experts should be invited from abroad."

SC gives govt a month to issue NOC to General (retd) Raheel Sharif

 General (retd) Raheel Sharif
The Supreme Court has ruled the foreign employment of General (retd) Raheel Sharif shall cease with immediate effect if the federal government does not grant him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) within a month.

“Let the secretary, Ministry of Defence file a report in this regard within one month from the issuance of this judgement and in case the requisite NOC is not granted by the cabinet within such time, the foreign employment of General (retd) Raheel Sharif shall cease with immediate effect,” says the judgement issued by a three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, in the dual nationalities case.

With respect to General (retd) Sharif, the judgement said that documents were filed showing NOC from the General Headquarters (GHQ) and the Ministry of Defence, but according to Section 3 of the Act of 1966, it is in fact the federal government which can grant permission to an ex-government servant to seek or take up employment as an officer or servant of a foreign government or agency.

Regarding Lt General (retd) Ahmad Shuja Pasha, he filed a duly signed certificate, wherein it is stated he did not take up any foreign employment in UAE or elsewhere abroad after his retirement. The court asked the federal government to submit annual reports to parliament regarding the implementation of the Act of 1966 prohibiting employment of former government servants with foreign governments and agencies.

The penalty for contravention of Section 3 of the Act is provided in Section 4 “imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years or with fine which may extend to Rs50,000, or with forfeiture of property, or with any two or more of the said punishments”.

As far as the armed forces are concerned, the judgment says, “According to the secretary, Ministry of Defence, recruitment of dual nationals is not permitted therein for which there exist relevant policies of the Army, Air Force and Navy; any dual nationals are required to surrender their foreign nationality prior to enrolment for induction in the armed forces of Pakistan.”

According to him, this position is reflected in the advertisements for recruitment and presently, there are no dual nationals recruited in such forces.

However, as directed vide order dated August 1, 2018, the Ministry of Defence secretary is required to continue the exercise to ascertain whether any dual nationals have been recruited in the armed forces on the basis of misdeclaration, concealment or non-disclosure and requisite action be taken in accordance with law by the concerned authority, says the verdict.

Palestinian teenage boy killed by Israeli forces laid to rest

Young Palestinians stand facing Israeli troops after a house belonging to a Palestinian accused of killing an Israeli soldier a few months ago was blown up in Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, December 15, 2018.
Palestinians have held a funeral procession for a teenager shot dead by Israeli forces during clashes in the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinians marched through the streets of Ramallah on Saturday to attend the funeral of Mahmoud Nakhla, 18, a day after Israeli regime forces killed him during clashes in Jalazone refugee camp in Ramallah.

Several people were also injured in the clashes that erupted between Palestinians and Israeli forces during protests in Ramallah against the Israeli settlement construction and the seizure of their land.

Israeli forces also clashed with Palestinian protesters in other areas across the occupied territories. They shot and injured several protesters in the city of al-Bireh.

In the besieged Gaza Strip, 85 Palestinians, including seven medics and three journalists, were also wounded by Israeli gunfire as thousands demonstrated near the fence, separating Gaza from the occupied territories, on Friday.

Separately on Saturday, Israeli forces raided the al-Am'ari refugee camp in the south of al-Bireh and demolished the home of a Palestinian prisoner accused of killing an Israeli soldier in May. Islam Abu Hamid was arrested during a raid of the camp in June.

In reaction, the Palestinian government released a statement, holding the Tel Aviv regime responsible for the deterioration of the situation on the ground as a result of its incursions.

Palestinian government spokesman Youssef al-Mahmoud described the incursion as a "scene of collective punishment," demanding "immediate international intervention and provision of international protection for our unarmed Palestinian people."

The demolition came amid an intense search operation across the occupied territories after two soldiers were killed near Ramallah.

On Friday, the military said it had rounded up as many as 40 Palestinians, trying to hunt down the suspect.

The two Israeli troops were killed after an attacker emerged from a vehicle and shot at soldiers near the settlements of Beit El and Ofra on Thursday.

The alleged shooting came after Israeli forces killed three Palestinians in separate operations over the span of six hours.

In total, seven people were killed in the most violent day to hit the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem al-Quds in months.

US Immigrant Detentions, Accusations of Rights Violations Rise

Suspected illegal immigrants are being processed at the Tucson Sector of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection headquarters in Tucson, Ariz., Aug. 9, 2012.
A growing number of immigrants in the United States are being incarcerated in detention centers for increasingly extended periods of time, and without being afforded the legal protections given to criminals, according to a recent report issued by the American Immigration Council.

The report, entitled “The Landscape of Immigration Detention in the United States,” says the number of people imprisoned for violating U.S. immigration laws has increased “more than fivefold in the past two decades,” from an average daily detention population of less than 7,000 in 1994 to more than 44,000 in 2017.

The rise in immigration detention temporarily dipped in 2014, even though the administration of President Barack Obama increased efforts to deport immigrant criminal offenders and recent border crossers. The Migration Policy Institute attributed this temporary decline in part to improved economic conditions in Mexico and reduced post-recession job demand in the United States.

The report said that during the administration of President Donald Trump, the number of detentions has “steeply increased.” As of Oct. 20, the average daily population in detention had reached 44,631 people, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement testified to Congress. The report notes that the 2019 U.S. federal budget requests funding for 52,000 detention beds.

Claims of human rights violations

The increase in immigrant detentions has also been accompanied by a rise in claims of human rights violations, the report said.

“There are growing reports of civil and human rights violations in detention, including substandard medical care, sexual and physical abuse, and exploitative labor practices. ICE acknowledged at least 185 deaths in detention between October 2003 and July 2018,” the report said.

“We’re talking about basic human rights and the bare minimum of legal protections that anyone in any detention should enjoy, the right to speedy trial, the right against self-incrimination, the right to a government appointed counsel, and a ban on cruel and unusual punishment,” said Kathryn Shepherd, the American Immigration Council’s national advocacy counsel.

Zero tolerance

The Trump administration has demonstrated a willingness to hold immigrants whether they cross legally or illegally in detention.

It’s “zero tolerance policy,” announced in April, mandated that anyone who entered the country illegally should be charged as a felon and incarcerated. Under U.S. law children cannot be held for more than 20 days with a felon parent, so border authorities separated children from their parents.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, cited a “crisis at the border” when announcing the policy, as a caravan of migrants, mostly from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, approached. It was reversed in June because of strong public condemnation. A federal judge subsequently ordered detained families be reunited.

Lacking accountability

Under U.S. law, immigrants may seek asylum if they can demonstrate a “credible fear of persecution or torture” if sent back to their home countries.

In the past, asylum-seekers were often allowed to return to the local community to await their day in court, but the Trump administration has increasingly moved to force them to remain in custody until their cases are resolved. However, since zero tolerance was ended, people with children are often once again released into the community.

Some asylum-seekers have been surprised to be sent to detention facilities while their cases are under review.

“I was told I was going to be taken to a jail. So at first I wanted to return back to Nigeria because I had never been to a jail before. So why would you take me to a jail? So it was like shocking for me,” said Edafe Okporo, a gay activist whose life was threatened in Nigeria. After requesting asylum he was held in detention for five months in 2017.

The American Immigration Council argues that detaining legitimate asylum-seekers is for the most part unnecessary.

“A lot of the people who are in detention facilities are not flight risks, are not dangerous to the community, and many of them have demonstrated that they have somewhere to go and that they will show up at their future hearing,” Shepherd said.

For-profit prisons

The American Immigration Council report criticizes the immigration detention process as lacking “public accountability and transparency.” Under U.S. law, immigration detention is categorized as civil and “non-punitive” rather than criminal, but at the same time immigrants are not granted the same legal protections given to citizens charged under the criminal code.

The more than 600 immigration detention facilities in the United States are essentially prisons with inmates issued uniforms, guards enforcing rigid rules, and limited communication and access to the outside world.

More than 65 percent of immigrants are held in privately run facilities that critics say are incentivized to cut back on basic care and extend detentions to increase profit margins.

This year, protests broke out at the privately run Adelanto Detention Facility in Southern California after guards were accused of using excessive force to end a hunger strike by detainees protesting what they claim was the lack of clean water, quality food and clothing at the facility.

“They sprayed me with pepper spray. The roughed me up, they hit me in my kidneys, they grabbed my arm. Also, when there wasn’t any pepper spray they made us shower in hot water, which caused unbearable pain,” said Josue Mateo Lemus Campos, an immigrant detainee who is now a plaintiff in a civil rights lawsuit against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE.)

The advocacy group Human Rights Watch also blamed the Adelanto facility for the deaths of at least three immigrants during the past eight years because of “dire health and safety conditions” at the detention center.

The budget for immigrants in detention facilities has also increased significantly. The cost to the U.S. taxpayer for holding an individual in a detention facility is more than $126 per day, and in 2017 the budget for immigrant detention centers exceeded $1.4 billion.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan on Saturday gave confidence to league spinner Yasir Shah for continuing his match-winning performance in the test series against South Africa starting from December 26.

The PM praised Shah’s ability with the red ball during their meet up in Islamabad. Khan said that Yasir’s presence is important for Pakistan as he keeps the strength to disturb batsmen with the variety of spin.

“Yasir has been brilliant with the ball in recent times,” he said.

Khan also asked the spinner about their performance in the test series against New Zealand which they lost 2-1.

Shah also discussed his bowling experience with Pakistan’s former captain saying that spin bowling always disturbs the batsman.

“Spinners always get an edge as it is difficult to play spin than fast bowling,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan will play the first test of three-match series against South Africa at SuperSports Park, South Africa on December 26.

Sarfraz led Pakistan team had traveled to South Africa on December 13 whereas Yasir Shah will join the squad on December 20.

Russian Spy’s Guilty Plea Illustrates Danger Facing US

Maria Butina walks with Alexander Torshin then a member of the Russian upper house of parliament in Moscow, Russia, Sept. 7, 2012.
Former top U.S. intelligence officials are warning the guilty plea by a former Russian graduate student and self-proclaimed gun-rights advocate should serve as a wake-up call about the Kremlin’s brazen desire and ability to interfere with the American political system.

Maria Butina, a 30-year-old native of Siberia, entered the plea Thursday in Washington, admitting she worked with a top Russian official, and two other Americans, to infiltrate U.S. conservative groups and the Republican Party for Russia’s benefit.

Her efforts, according to court documents, which included attending events hosted by the National Rifle Association gun-rights group and hosting so-called “friendship dinners,” were directed by Alexander Torshin, a deputy governor of Russia’s central bank with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

At one gathering in 2015, she even managed to ask President Donald Trump, a candidate at the time, about U.S.-Russian relations, prompting him to say he thought he would “get along very nicely” with President Putin.

“It certainly is yet more validation of the Intelligence Community Assessment,” former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told VOA via email, referring to the unclassified January 2017 report by the country’s top three intelligence agencies that concluded that Putin and the Russian government aspired to sway the election in Trump’s favor

Significance of plea

Clapper, who has been publicly critical of Trump since leaving office, said the Butina plea is most significant because it shows “the lengths to which the Russians went to meddle in the 2016 election.”

“It illustrates, as well, the astute understanding the Russians have of our political ecosystem; the fact that they singled out the NRA speaks to the death grip the NRA has on many of our politicians,” he added.

Other former intelligence officials said the details in Butina’s guilty plea put a spotlight on the Kremlin’s obsession with undermining the U.S. from within.

“The big picture takeaway is that Russia comes at the U.S. target with every option it can muster — full-fledged spies operating under some kind of cover, a corps of “Illegals” like the 10 expelled from the U.S. in 2010, and someone like Butina who is best seen as espionage ‘lite,’” said John McLaughlin, a former acting director of the CIA.

“In combination, these three techniques increase dramatically the possibility that Moscow will gain something — or someone — of intelligence value,” he warned.

Plea agreement downplayed

A Kremlin spokesman Friday called the charges against Butina “absolutely groundless and invalid.”

And Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov downplayed the significance of the plea agreement.

“As far as I understand the whole idea of this plea agreement — this practice is typical for the U.S. — is to bargain for a chance to go free as soon as possible and to get back home,” he told reporters.

Plea deal unusual

Former U.S. officials admit a plea deal in a case like this is unusual and note that if she makes good on her promise to cooperate truthfully with prosecutors, it could help unravel and expose others who were part of Butina’s network, leading perhaps to more indictments and embarrassment for some organizations.

“It basically pulls the curtain back on the Kremlin’s broader objectives, to gain influence with the Republican Party and the right in America,” said Max Bergman, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress and director of the Moscow Project, and who served in the State Department under President Barack Obama.

One of those coming under scrutiny is Paul Erickson, a U.S. political activist with extensive ties to the Republican Party who was romantically linked with Butina.

Erickson matches the description of “Person 1” in the statement offense provided by prosecutors. “Person 1” helped advise Butina on which politicians to target, according to the document.

Erickson’s lawyer, William Hurd, said in an email to the Reuters news agency, “Paul Erickson is a good American. He has done nothing to harm our country and never would.”

White House officials had no comment Friday on the Butina guilty plea.

Trump himself, while not having commented on Butina specifically, has repeatedly denied allegations he or his presidential campaign coordinated with Russia, calling the special counsel investigation by Robert Mueller a “witch hunt” and stating “NO COLLISION” on Twitter.

Russian efforts to meddle

U.S. intelligence agencies, including the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, also have not commented on the significance or impact of the Butina guilty plea, though many officials have warned Russia’s efforts to meddle in U.S. domestic politics have not stopped.

“We continue to see a pervasive message campaign by Russia to try to weaken and divide the United States,” Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told reporters from the White House briefing room in the run-up to the U.S. midterm elections this past November.

And in October, U.S. prosecutors unsealed charges against Elena Alekseevna Khusyaynova, described as the chief accountant for Russia’s multimillion-dollar information warfare operation to influence both the 2016 and 2018 elections.

While many of Khusyaynova’s social media efforts focused on conservative U.S. voters, some also targeted liberal voters and aimed to stir up anger, and even hatred, for Trump.

Officials and experts said as a result, it would be a mistake to assume there are no others like Butina out there who, rather than targeting Republicans and conservative groups, are looking to infiltrate liberal parties and organizations.

“The Russians don’t have a partisan agenda,” said the Moscow Project’s Bergman, pointing to a 2015 gala to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Russian-owned television outlet RT, during which Russia’s Putin sat at a table with former Trump adviser, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and U.S. Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein.

“Their agenda is for discord,” Bergman said.

Bangladesh's Mashrafe harbours no Imran-like ambitions

Bangladesh's Mashrafe harbours no Imran-like ambitions
He may be Bangladesh’s biggest cricket star, but Mashrafe Mortaza insists he is not another Imran Khan, Pakistan’s cricketing superhero-turned-prime minister.

Contesting a seat in the national parliament for the ruling Awami League party in the December 30 elections, Mashrafe says he just wants to do more for sports and charity.

"To be honest, the level where Imran Khan has reached, people cannot always reach there even if they want to," Mashrafe told AFP in an interview.

"My desire is to do something for sports... since I am a sportsman, my wish is limited here. I will work for my region to see if I can do something good."

Mashrafe hails from the southwestern district of Narail where his charity Narail Express -- also the fast-bowler’s nickname -- has donated ambulances to hospitals and high-yield rice seeds to farmers.

Turning to politics is nothing new for cricketers in South Asia, where the sport is massively popular.

But unusually, Mashrafe is still playing, captains Bangladesh in the one-day format of the game, and intends to lead the team at next year’s World Cup.

Mashrafe has already retired from Twenty20 international cricket and has not played a Test match since 2009.

He may also have been upstaged in the hearts of the nation’s cricket fans by his teammate Shakib Al Hasan, one of the world’s leading all-rounders.

But Mashrafe’s die-hard attitude off the pitch -- he has had seven operations on his knee -- and on-field expressions of patriotism could well endear him to voters.

He also won plaudits as captain, guiding the cricket minnows to their first World Cup quarter-final in 2015.

CJP orders MNA Afzal Khokhar, brother to be put on ECL

CJP orders MNA Afzal Khokhar, brother to be put on ECL
Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday ordered Punjab police and the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to set up a complaint centre to investigate claims made against PML-N MNA Afzal Khokhar and MPA Saiful Mulook Khokhar concerning alleged land grabbing by the duo.

The chief justice, while heading a two-member bench, also issued verbal orders to put the siblings' names on the Exit Control List (ECL). However, the travel restrictions were not mentioned when the court's formal order was dictated.

The orders against the Khokhar brothers were issued after the court took notice of a complaint made against them by overseas Pakistanis who had accused them of illegally occupying their land.

The apex court, after summoning Afzal and Saiful Mulook, assailed and ordered them to submit the details of all assets under their and their families' names.

"It's better that you relinquish the estate of widows and overseas Pakistanis you have seized," the top judge advised the Khokhars. "We are getting numerous complaints against you."

At one point, the judge pulled out his phone and mentioned the complaints he had been receiving.

"We have not grabbed anyone's land," Saiful Mulook responded.

"If grabbing is proved, I will not spare you," the judge warned. "Everyone knows that I do what I say. It's better therefore that you don't take the risk with your MNA-ship."

Justice Nisar asked the siblings to explain their relationship with a property dealer named Ashraf Shah. The brothers denied knowing anyone by that name.

The chief justice instructed the LDA and police to compile and furnish a report on Khokhar brothers' alleged capture of land.

The hearing was subsequently adjourned till December 22.

Govt decides to resume gas supply to CNG sector in Karachi

Govt decides to resume gas supply to CNG sector in Karachi
The government has decided to resume gas supply to the CNG sector, Federal Minister for Petroleum Ghulam Sarwar Khan announced on Saturday, almost a week since the crisis hit CNG stations in Karachi and left public transport in disarray.

While talking to reporters in Karachi, Minister announced to resume the gas supply to CNG stations from 8 pm.

“We held detailed talks with the CNG association earlier today. I am pleased to announce that we will resume gas supply to the CNG sector at 8:00PM tonight,”

Residents of Karachi, the country’s largest city and main business hub, continued to suffer on Saturday as the CNG crisis entered its seventh day, disrupting public transport and posing difficulties for commuters.

CNG is the main fuel for public transporters in Karachi.

The supply of gas to CNG stations remained suspended for the past seven days, forcing owners to shut down their CNG stations. Only a scattered number of buses, mini-buses, and rickshaws could be seen running on the roads on Saturday.

On Tuesday night, SSGC, the supplier of gas in Sindh and Balochistan, announced to halt gas supply to CNG stations and captive power plants of all general industries.

SSGC said that it was facing acute shortage of gas and low pressure in the system, which was affecting adequate supply to domestic and commercial sectors.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Imran Khan ordered that boards of directors of the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and SSGCL be dissolved owing to the prevailing gas shortfall in the country.

The premier gave directions for stricter action against the gas suppliers, as the CNG crisis continued to disrupt public transport.

A day after ordering a fact-finding committee to launch an inquiry against the managing directors of both SNGPL and SSGCL, the federal government decided to reshuffle the companies’ boards of directors over purported poor performance. On the prime minister’s instructions, the boards of directors of both the companies were dissolved.

SC orders Ahad Cheema to return money received beyond income
The Supreme Court on Saturday directed Lahore Development Authority (LDA) former director general Ahad Cheema to return funds he had accumulated beyond his stated sources of income.

The directives were made as Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar heard a case about LDA City housing scheme at the Lahore Registry of the apex court.

“First Orange Line Train was ruined and now LDA City,” the CJP asked Cheema as proceedings began.

“What was LDA’s connection to Paragon City that an agreement was made? You were the government’s chosen person. You received salary at the Bhikki Power Plant,” he added.

In response, the former LDA director general informed the court that he drew a salary of Rs1.4 million after he was appointed at the post.

“Who is this person whose salary was raised from Rs100,000 to Rs1.4 million,” the top judge inquired.

“What political favours did you do that this salary was granted? If you were such a chosen person then the chief minister would have paid you right out of his own pocket.”

CJP Nisar ordered Cheema to return the funds he had accumulated beyond his stated sources of income and warned that his property would be seized if he did not return the money.

The incumbent LDA director general was also directed to provide recommendations on LDA City.

Apple To Roll Out New Snoopy, Peanuts Cartoon Series

Apple will produce a new animated series starring Snoopy and the Peanuts gang, created by the late American cartoonist Charles Schulz, for its video platform, a source close to the deal said Friday, confirming press reports.

The agreement was reached with Apple, "in a highly competitive environment" and at the expense of other candidates, with the Canadian group DHX Media, which holds 80% of the rights of Snoopy and Peanuts, said the source.

DHX bought this stake, as well as rights to Peanuts gang member Peppermint Patty, for $345 million in 2017.

The commitment is for DHX to produce a new animated series, specials and short programs around the Peanuts gang, a bunch of kids with the dog Snoopy.

The Canadian group will also create educational programs including the Peanuts gang, exclusively for Apple, around space and the conquest of space.

The agreement between Apple and DHX Media is another example of the Apple brand's ambition, given the launch, announced by several media in 2019, of its own video-on-demand service offering exclusive content.

Until now, the video content available on the iTunes platform was produced by third parties and accessible one by one, not as a subscription.

Schulz wrote and illustrated the Peanuts cartoon strip starting in 1950. The final stripran in newspapers one day after his death in February 2000, according to the Charles M. Schulz Museum.

First transgender participated in miss universe

Angela Ponce is making history since the pageant reversed a longstanding policy in 2012 that participants must be
Carrying a bold message of inclusion, transgender rights and a sharp rebuke to US President Donald Trump, Miss Spain’s Angela Ponce is blazing a trail as the first transgender contestant in Miss Universe’s 66-year history.

The willowy beauty is making history since the pageant reversed a longstanding policy in 2012 that participants must be “naturally born” women.

Explaining her broad appeal the plain-speaking 27-year-old says “who hasn’t suffered from prejudice? Who hasn’t had to deal with bullying?”

Outside the walls of Miss Universe —whose finals will be held early Monday in Thailand’s capital Bangkok —the transgender community continues to be marginalised and misunderstood, with high rates of suicide.

A leaked White House report said President Trump’s administration is considering pushing changes to the law to define gender by biological traits at birth, while trying to block transgender people from military service.

Ponce is defiant about how to respond to Trump, a former owner of Miss Universe, and others who would try to box her in by physical traits.

“I always say: having a vagina didn’t transform me into a woman. I am a woman, already before birth, because my identity is here,” she told AFP, gesturing to her head.

She also took issue with the classification of trans people by large sections of society based on prejudice and narrow assessments of gender.

“Outsiders say what I can and cannot do, what I am and what I am not,'” Ponce said.

First transgender model crowned Miss Spain, to compete in Miss Universe 2018.

“No, I’m sorry. To be a woman is your identity. It doesn’t matter if you are white, black, if you have a vagina… if you have a penis.”

Ponce, who works with a foundation in Spain helping children struggling with stigma linked to being trans, is aware of the visibility she brings to the Miss Universe platform.

Her performance has so far drawn praise, from her portrayal of a flamenco dancer during the national costume portion of the competition to her strut down the runway in a shimmery mermaid-like gown in the evening dress category.

“You can empower yourself like I have and turn something negative into your biggest strength,” she said.

“Children are born without prejudices and I think that if we talk to them about diversity from a young age.

We can create a new generation of human beings who are raised a lot better, more tolerant and respectful.”

This year’s event, which critics say is a throwback to stereotypes of the the pre #MeToo era, has largely preached a message of inclusivity.

It boasts an all-women panel of judges made up of business leaders and former Miss Universe titleholders.

But gaffes still abound — Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers got in hot water for appearing to mock the contestants from Vietnam and Cambodia on social media for not being able to speak English.

She has since posted an apology on instagram, saying she did not “intend to hurt” her fellow competitors.

Monday’s event will see last year’s winner Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa crown her successor among 94 countries in a live televised event hosted by American comic turned TV host Steve Harvey and supermodel Ashley Graham.

Shakira has been charged with tax evasion in Spain with prosecutors claiming she failed to pay more than €14.5m (£13m) between 2012 and 2014.

The popstar's representatives have denied wrongdoing.

According to the charges, the Colombian pop star allegedly listed the Bahamas as her official address for tax purposes during that period but was living in Spain with her partner, Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique.

Prosecutors claim the Hips Don't Lie singer travelled abroad only for short periods for work but spent most of the year in Spain.

They now want her to pay tax in Spain on the money she made in ventures around the world.

Prosecutor want Shakira to pay a bond of €19.4m (£17.4m), which they say is the amount she owes in tax plus 33%, in accordance with the law in Spain.

The alternative they suggest is a court freeze of her assets to the same amount.

In 2015, the star officially moved to Spain for tax purposes.

Representatives of Shakira have said the singer did not live in Spain until 2015, and has met all of her tax obligations to Spanish authorities.

A magistrate will now look at whether there is enough evidence to put the Whenever, Wherever singer on trial.

Shakira was among those named in the Paradise Paper leaks that revealed the offshore tax arrangements of several high-profile figures.
